Well I walked right in and sat right down. You seat yourself. And it ain't nothing fancy but the food is really good. My cousin told me about this place and if you sneeze too hard you'll pass it up on Charlotte street. I always thought it was a liquor store, cause that's what's in front. (they own that too) Nothing but old fashioned service and food. And everyone knows each other. I never got the servers name but she was nice and you don't see many restaurants that serve 3 sides with a meat! Well here's one! Thanks y'all, I'll be back! P. S. The 3rd Generation owner (70 years they been in business), introduced himself when I went to the counter to check out. He was very nice and he gave me a lunch menu if o wanted to call in ahead of time and pick it up.

We really enjoyed the breakfast. We shared the Western omelet, a half order of biscuits and gravy, a side pancake, home fries and grits. The omelet had a good flavor with lots of meat and cheese. The meats were a little dry. The gravy had a nice sausage flavor. I prefer a large fluffy biscuit. These were rather small, but had a good flavor. The grits were perfect. All and all, it was a very good breakfast

I'm not sure how to review this place. My food was kind of warm. My husband's food was cold, except his potatoes. The food was good, especially the meatloaf (very cold), parley new potatoes and the turnips (served hot). The cornbread muffins were noticeably old. I would try the place again and hope for hotter food. The waitress seemed to be tired of working with the general public, she had zero facial expressions our entire visit, but did her job and that's all you can ask for nowadays.. All in all, the food was good, didn't make me sick, was served fast (which I believe it's all premade and served later anyway). I'd probably? try again. It's just a confusing review, just like how I felt when I left the restaurant. Update: I went yesterday, had the best meal. The turnips were still so delicious. White beans were melt in your mouth amazing. Both meals were piping hot and served fast. The waitress was so kind and fast with our orders. Lemon icebox was beautiful and tasty. Will definitely keep returning.

Food is always excellent home cooking with vegetables fresh from local farmers gardens. Run by the grandson of the original owner, this place dates back to WWII. Prices are good and servings are quite adequate! The banana pudding is like my grandma used to make...especially when it comes hot out of the oven! I have been eating here since I was old enough to walk...and that's been a few years! Lol

Classic diner meat and three. Barbeque was bland but the roast beef tasted great. Corn bread was decent, green beans were okay, turnip greens were good, yams and marshmallows got 2 thumbs up. Some of the servers seemed new and awkward but ours was great, she seemed experienced and could anticipate our needs.

Wendell's reminds me of the old Nashville, and you feel like you went back in a time machine here. I got the meat and three with country fried steak, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans. The country fried steak was delicious and so were the mashed potatoes. The creamed corn was also pretty good along with the green beans.

Wendell’s we love ya! A Sylvan Park treasure, it’s been around since the 1950’s off 53rd and Charlotte. More than just a meat and three; you can get breakfast ALL day! My sister and I have been devotees and recently took my husband. We all ordered breakfast around 11am on a Sat. He said it was the best breakfast he’s ever had! And the bacon!!! We like the booths, the servers are quick, there’s always fresh home grown vegetables near the register. The bill for the three of us with drinks was only about $30! Inexpensive and good. What’s not to love.

This is more about atmosphere than dining, but it is one of those places you want to go back to again and again. The counter and tables look like they go back 60 years. And the walls are adorned with photos of a who's who that have been through Nashville during that time. Food is the standard meat and potatoes with lots of sides. Cornbread was rather dry though. Prices are about what you would expect for a diner cafe. And service was attentive

I'm afraid of tourist discovering this place but everyone should experience Nashville from the 1970s. It's hands down the best meat n 3 in old Nashville and worth the wait. The only proper Banana Pudding as well. They are currently explanding so make sure you get in there before they remodel to get the original experience. A+++

Jiminy-hoody-goo! Ol whipper schnapper's delight! Wendell's is a reliable, homey establishment with warm servers and hospitable service. I usually get two pancakes, four sausage patties, and four over medium eggs and made a sandwich out of it! I eat with a fork and knife, of course. But its bomb. 10/10 would go there with my friends any time!! Only thing missing is chocolate chips in the pancakes...

The food here is phenomenal. I definitely love that it’s home cooked food, you know soul food, southern food; all the good fixens!! It’s worth every penny. The prices are reasonable and i will keep coming when I’m in Nashville. The waitresses, some a great some..not so much. But that don’t matter really the food makes up for it. Amazing.. WOW!! We came in on a thursday in the middle of lunch.. We was greeted immediatly, as soon as we sat down we got drinks, didnt take 10 minuets to get our food & dessert was to drool for.. Nashville is famous for our "meat and three" restaurants, and Wendell Smith's Restaurant sets the standard of excellence in this restaurant category. For those not familiar with a "meat and three, " it is a restaurant that serves a choice of one meat (such as roast beef, fried chicken, sliced ham, etc), and three vegetables (cream corn, turnip greens, squash, green beans, etc). Although there is an assumption that meat and threes have fresh, home-cooked vegetable, this is unfortunately not the case at many of today's meat and threes. However, after having lunch recently at Wendell Smith's, I am happy to report they are carrying on the tradition of home-cooked offerings. I took two family members for lunch, and everyone was more than pleased with their food, and surprisingly, we were all too full for dessert. And if you like turnip greens, their's are perfectly cooked and seasoned,, and some of the best I've enjoyed in a long time. And do yourself a favor and order the creamed corn. You can thank me later⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I always go here for breakfast every morning because the restaurant is very clean, cups are clean, silverware is clean, bathrooms are clean, plates are clean, floors are clean. I always order a sausage egg and cheese sandwich with extra done home fries. Lori is usually my server and she is great! Sooooo good!! Very impressed! We stopped by on a Wednesday and ALL my food was fresh and not out of a can...fresh fried corn, fresh squash, fresh turnip greens, really good white beans and the best fried chicken around wow! I will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes. The meat and three items change a bit daily and they also have a set menu for breakfast lunch and dinner. Yum 😋

Throw back Thursday. Friends bought my lunch! Made me remember all the times my dad had me grab lunch for us when I worked a summer job for him back in the late 70s and early 80s. The food was great then and it still is today. Employees are friendly and fast. Great that some things stay the same.

1st off the sides were great. I had ham(not the good kind), pork chops not seasoned well, pinto beans were good but plain corn bread was cold. Everything was not warmed (didn't want to complain so I ate it) but again the sides were good. Why 3 stars? The two creepy cooks were hiding behind the wall winking waving and doing the "what's up with u girl" head nods and winks while I was eating lunch with my husband. It was rude, creepy, and disrespectful. The food wasn't good enough to deal with the unsolicited attention. Spent $75 total for 6 meals + banana pudding (why did the wafers taste like eww idk cake or old).

One of our favorite places to go for a meat and 3 lunch. Sis comes once a year for knee replacement check up so this is our next stop after her appointment. Wednesday, her appt day, is always fried chicken day. It's always yummy.

Food is always great but the 1 star loss is because the cornbread muffins are always dry, and never warm enough to even melt the butter. Only other issue for me and its probably just my personal tastes..but most of the veggies have red pepper flakes in them and I can't order them as I can't tolerate any form of pepper spices, and frankly not all vegetables need red pepper to make them taste better.. I just wish so many of them didn't have it as that limits my options.. and the fried chicken is also too spicy (for me). I know a lot of people like that but plenty of us don't as well.. Service is always top notch and food is always good.

I have been to Nashville many times but never knew about this meat and three resturant and let me tell you, I've definitely missed out. After doing my research for a meat and three diner, I decided on Wendell Smiths for it's reviews and location. This was a surprise for my wife and daughter but they know when we travel that I always look for non-chain food establishment. We all three were promptly seated and after scanning the very adequate selections, we decided on the fried chicken. I got mashed potatoes and gravy, fried corn, turnip greens and cornbread and it was all delicious. I grew up on this type of home cooking and let me tell you, this was done right. We were definitely full and happy when we left Wendells and you will be too. We will DEFINITELY be back when in the Nashville area.

I love to find a meat n 3 because we do not have them in my hometown. The taste of the food was good, the temperature of all vegetables was luke warm. The waitress, Amanda, was not attentive and very short in everything said. She left our bill to pay when she left the food and did not come back to ask us if we were interested in dessert. The waitress was awesome. The food was seasoned really well but the turnip greens could have been cooked a little longer, and the stems could have been cut prior to cooking, tough to chew. Most important the food was luke warm should be hot when brought to the table. But the food was really tasty. Will go back but I will make sure that my food is hot even if they have to put my plate in the microwave.

The mashed potatoes were good but absolutely nothing else. I have always been a supporter of Wendell Smith but I won't be going back. My granddaughter didn't eat any of her food.

Nice Dive. Food was very good, and the service was good, especially for the time period with Covid-19. Menu is just good old fashioned southern comfort food. Reminds you of your Moms or Grandmas cooking...excellent. Only negative is the decor could use some updating, and the floor felt kinda sticky...but I had no qualms about eating the food, and both my wife and I thought it was well worth the $$, which wasn't much.

This is a meat and three sides country cooking place. I did not want any of the entrees on the day's menu and ordered beef stew with cornbread. The 2 corn muffins were great. Crispy and hot and fresh. The beef stew was also very good. It was so good that I ate all of the broth after all the beef and vegetables. I ordered a side of macaroni and cheese but I should have just eaten the stew. It was too much. I ordered pecan pie for dessert and it was okay. When I went to the cash register , I realized I had neglected to bring my wallet. I told the cashier my mistake and asked her what I should do. She had me write my name and phone number on the check. I told her I lived close by and I would come right back. I did that and thanked her for trusting me. Wendell Smith's is always pleasant. It is not fancy but good quality.

I LOVE this restaurant. I eat here 3 or more times a month, even tho it's a thirty minute drive from my house. The vegetables are to die for, everything is freshly made and the staff are amazing. Favorite dishes are turnip greens, whipped potatoes, white beans or black eyed peas and cornbread, and sweet corn. And sweet tea, of course! Lots of parking, great value, open seating, offers quick to go orders.

This place is kind of known as a Nashville meat-n-three legend, sort of like Arnold's or the now closed Mack's and Pie Wagon. Some local musicians use their outside sign for album artwork, such as Marty Stuart and Lee Ann Rimes. And considering I could walk there from work, it is surprising I have only been there maybe half a dozen times, I just usually brown bag my lunch. I did go there with a group of friends for lunch a couple of weeks ago and it was good. Pretty busy too. The inside doesn't look like it has been updated since they opened, and there is plenty of tar staining on the ceiling from the days when smoking was allowed inside. Their daily special the day I went was four meat choices and maybe 12-15 vegetables. They also have a regular menu you can order from, and I believe they serve breakfast all day. Pretty good stuff....

Went there yesterday for breakfast. Never been before. I had 2 huge pancakes scrambled eggs and turkey sausage along with sweet tea to drink. The pancakes were great along with the turkey sausage links. The tea was sweetened just right. The only thing that I didn't like was that it seemed like everything was priced separately. They didn't offer any combos that would include like pancakes eggs sausage and a drink for 1 price. That would be nice.

My favourite meat & 3 restaurant in Nashville and I've eaten regularly at most of them! The interior is not the Ritz but the consistently DELICIOUS food makes up for it! The staff is friendly & efficient and the prices are really fair. (Yes, a Senior Discount!) The customers are mostly locals (thank God the tourists haven't discovered it!) We were visiting Nashville for vacation and wanted to eat at a locally owned restaurant for breakfast. We picked Wendell Smith's. It's nothing fancy and it's evident it's been a staple of the community for many years. The food was excellent. The bacon made to perfection, biscuits were so soft and fluffy, sausage gravy was spot on and breakfast potatoes with a little ketchup and hot sauce hit the spot. Quaint little diner.

My favorite. I go here often. Their breakfast is one of the bests around - can always get a seat and try to sit in the middle so you can see all the celebrities on the wall. This place ive passed a million and one times and never thought nothing of it. Just seemed like another hole in the wall restaurant that were a dine a dozen... But that all changed. Said what the heck ill give it a shot. Im hungry, so is the wife and little one. And from then on i realized i had made a stupid mistake of not coming here sooner! Hattie B's and Bobbys dairy were my to go spots which are across the street from wendell smiths.... not anymore. The place was comfortable with many different faces, genders, and ages all gathering to come to this "hole in the wall" the people were exceptionally friendly and took hospitality to another level, especially our waitress Katosha Who was sweeter than the banana pudding with whipped cream with a sweet tea and order of the marshmallow yams. Just her alone made the experience worthwhile and ensured i will be back again. Then there was the food. For the low price youd think youd get subpar. Again... WRONG. it was very delicious. Flavorful and it will be my job to make sure i try everything on the menu. I did get to try the mac and cheese, and turnips and stuffed pepper. And i recommend fully. The decor was old school and felt warm. Definitely didnt make me uncomfortable to eat there. In all to sum it up. Definitely make sure you stop here. It's now one of my top Nashville spots to eat. And hopefully it will be yours too!!

Wendell's is a liquor store I frequent, not on a regular basis. There is a female cashier, who has such a negative attitude that I choose to patronize elsewhere. Upon trying to make small talk with her, it was papable she didn't want to engage about Thanksgiving. However, on Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving I stopped in on my way home. Crayton, happily assisted me, not only once but twice; when I returned on Sunday after Thanksgiving. Crayton even helped carry 1/2 case of wine to my vehicle. Oh man, great work lunch! I nearly never choose these types of places when I'm looking for food, but I'll never complain when asked to go to one. The menu, per usual, looks like a run down of weekly meals from my childhood, and everything always sounds great. Wendell's is a charming little place, with 1960s diner architecture, and a bustling, sunny feel. You'd think it's hard for anything to stand out with this simple type of country-food menu, but they pulled it off. It's the simple things. To begin with, the iced tea was just . . . perfect. There's no other word. Sweet, but not too sweet, not watery, not over-brewed, and with a small slice of lemon for aroma. If I were to ever use iced tea in a high-end cocktail, this is the tea I would be searching for. The veggies were also great. I quite seriously believe I've never had better turnip greens. They were rich and well-flavored with pork trimmings, but not at all greasy, as is often the case with this dish. Neither were they undercooked and bitter. I've really never had better. Also, I'm usually they guy who takes one bite of cornbread and never goes back to it. Usually because either it's sweet (who thinks that's ok?? It's not cake, people!), or because it's dry and tasteless. Wendell's again hits it out of the park with their cornbread muffins. Even with the faux butter spread on the table, I ate more than one - and that's high praise. Oddly enough, the roasted pork I had wasn't so incredible. It's not terribly surprising, considering they don't bill themselves as a barbecue place. But when you called it "pit-roasted" I expect a little woodsy flavor, right? Not like true barbecue, but shouldn't it have been close to a fire at some point? Anyhow, it was good enough, not dry, and came with a very nice tangy barbecue sauce. My colleagues' meals went equally well. I got great remarks on the liver & onions, and the roast beef, so I probably just chose the wrong meat. The great thing is, even with a mediocre meat choice, the meal was still great, and well worth their moderate price. Service was familiar and friendly, and done with the professionalism of people who have been in the business for time untold. I've never seen a more efficient lunch service anywhere. Experience has taught them well, and they have lots of tricks up their sleeves to keep the people happy, full, and on time to get back to work. The little personalized tip pouches behind the register, for example - keeps you from having to return to the table to deposit your tips! Their experience shows, and they expertly serve dozens at a time on a busy lunch with ease. Unfortunately, I'll probably not be back often, as I don't get to that side of town much at all. But if chance happens that I need some turnip greens or blackberry cobbler anywhere west of downtown in the future, I'll know directly where to go.
