Reviews of Smith & Porter | Restaurant + Bar
I was hoping to find a great place for dinner while visiting the city with a family member, and Smith & Porter did not disappoint! The staff, from the hostesses to the waitstaff, was friendly and attentive. Max, our waiter, was fantastic, never letting our water glasses go unfilled or our requests unacknowledged. The drinks were great, particularly the Garden Spritz. The corn chowder was deliciously smokey and the truffle mac & cheese was divine. The pork chop was slightly on the tough side, but had great flavor and was complimented by some amazing mashed potatoes. The atmosphere is wonderful, giving the place a refined feel. My dinner partner and I would both gladly return!
Definitely a must dine 🍽
The Food, Service and the Warm Room on a cold Minneapolis night... on point. Kudos to the Smith & Porter team!
A girlfriend and I had dinner here last night and it was the most amazing experience!! Our server John was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with menu selections when asked. My steak was so tender and flavorful I had to thank Chef Jason personally! Beautiful restaurant in a nice area by the Stone Arch Bridge. I will definitely go back to this restaurant next time I am in Minneapolis.
Amazing restaurant! So glad they opened back up. Once I saw they were open, I booked a reservation immediately. John was awesome as well - definitely ask for him to be your server! Going back on Friday. Cute neighborhood place with class
Happy hour was one of the best in town! Food was great. Highly recommend the Cauliflower Bites and the Lollipop Buffalo Chicken. Fish options looked good, will try them next time!
This could be a great place - not tonight. We had a party of 7 for my daughter's birthday. The place was almost empty and the service poor. Ordered bottle of Chardonnay and got Cabernet Sauvignon ??? They recovered from this quickly.. Pop Overs were cold. Meals were slow in coming and cool to luke warm - not hot !!! Diner salad arrived when half finished with our main course !!! The complementary birthday brownie was excellent.
They just reopened and it is such a wonderful place.Very friendly staff , pretty nice ambiance, very well designed menu and very good food . We had a couple of cocktails as well and enjoyed them very much. So happy to have them back in the neighborhood. We will be back
Cocktails, cauliflower appetizer, sea bass and dessert were amazing. Not discovered yet so easy to get in. Bonus!
Our server, John, was very good! Attentive, but never interrupted us. That is skill! All the employees and manager made sure everything was top notch. It was!
Ribeye and red snapper… amazing!!! Great staff, very friendly and amazing food. Caidyn and Maren were amazing, they will treat you right at the bar.
Cozy place, a good add to the neighborhood. The food is decent, good portion and with good service. Keep it up chef Matt.
Good happy hour, great food, excellent comp popovers, and wonderful service. Glad they are open again!
Nice place but at this price point, they need to get experienced bartenders that know how to make cocktails
I have eaten here twice, food was great both times and everyone in our party was happy with their food. Will go back!
Food was OK, but nothing special.
The pulled pork sandwich was spicy but bland. However, the deserts are pretty good.
Nice spot for Sunday brunch! Food was delicious and the bottomless mimosas were tasty.
If you are looking for a good and safe place for dinner with great service, this place is Great. The food was pretty good and at a decent price point for this type of restaurant. The service was excellent. A few different choices on the menu will keep things good for multiple visits. The entrance is through a apartment building entrance, but you can walk right in and they will take care of you. They did a very good job with cocktails so if you are in the mood for a few drinks, this place is good for that.
Restaurant is conveniently located two blocks from my home. Service was fantastic however, the burger we ordered was overcooked the first time. Server did offer to make a new burger. Excellent happy hour menu!
There atmosphere is quiet & the place is clean & new still. Last night was my second visit & I won't return. The food should be $12-18 meal for the flavor, the wait staff & the problems. The food lacks depth & flavor for an independent &/or high end place. My husband's burger was good but I didn't come here for burgers. The 1st time I went they were out of the beer, side & main that I wanted! I got a tiny portion of overcooked flavorless shrimp served at room temp. The menu changed & I tried on Saturday night this time. Eventually we asked the bar tender to seat us as there was no host. All food was served warm this time but all lacked depth again. All three sides covered in the same sprouts - not impressive presentation. The potato patacones were a favorite. Again every sauce needed more tweaking, not good enough for the prices. They don't even have butter available from/in the kitchen... How is that possible? Or the waitress just refused?
Great dinner celebrated our 3rd year! Would love to come for my birthday!
Very cool vibes and great reasonable prices. I live within walking distance and been here twice and both times the staff were amazing with great menu recommendations. In my opinion, it’s a great place for breakfast with many menu items to choose from and you get a lot for your money. This place gets a lot of hotel guest traffic during big events as it’s near many hotels. From simple coffee to great brunches, or just a quick bite can be found here. Both times I’ve gone here it’s in the cold season but in the summer, they have a great patio with fascinating seating outdoors. Check out this place for yourself and you won’t be disappointed.
Amazing food and service. This place is a great addition to the neighborhood. I suggest going for the salmon and the scallops. Both were great. Wine selection was nice with great pricing too. Server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Happy Hour every day too. I will be back.
We had a party of five on a Saturday at 8pm for a friend and my joint birthdays. Service was excellent. The design and decor is beautiful. The food was delicious. And they have a great wine selection. Great for special occasions!
Happy hour is decently priced. The place was not busy because it's off the beaten path. Older crowd. Chips and dip, mini cheeseburgers and spinach dip croquettes were all very good.
The food was very good. I recommend the smoked walleye tots for an appetizer. There are only 5 tots, but they are really good! Only get the grits and scallops if you love the taste of bacon. They are so rich that you might want some extra bread or something to cut it.
Mixed experience here. What we liked: location, casual/warm setting, Happy Hour options, the Merlot we selected, and the mushroom and caramelized onion bisque. What didn't meet expectations: server's demeanor, both 8oz petite filets were end cuts and overcooked, mashed potatoes were watery not creamy. Had we not been on a schedule to make our show, the entrees would have been sent back to the kitchen. I'd return for a pre-show Happy Hour, and perhaps attempt a burger, but I wouldn't return for the more expensive entrees.
This is such a nice place to have in the neighborhood. Great food, friendly staff, and comfy outdoor seating area. We were so excited to come here again now that restaurants are opening back up for dine-in. The staff seemed super diligent and careful about covid concerns. We’ll be back soon!
Food was outstanding. Exceeded expectations. Please try it out.
Prompt and attentive service. Ordered a few things all were hits! Must try the walleye tots! Dry rub wings great texture and a little kick in the seasoning. Scallops cooked perfectly. Give it a try you will not regret it.
We went there for mpls restaurant week. The dishes are good with the price ($30). Especially full size dessert was way out of the expectation. Good experience, however, more expensive than we expected because it was originally written on the restaurant week website with a price of $25...
The salmon appetizer and scallops were amazing. Great happy hour and service. Definitely an older crowd of people- at least around happy hour. I will definitely be back!
My huevos rancheros had sprouts on it for some odd reason and cost $15 for eggs & salsa with black beans served on a large uncooked flour tortilla. Drinks were good. Waiter was great.
We ate outside for dinner - not too crowded or loud. Our burgers were delicious! Great service and the chef Celic even came out to see how everyone's food tasted. Will be back!
What an interesting place. It’s part of and owned by a company that houses the 55+ community. Our waiter was amazing and the brunch food was incredible. The Eggs Benedict they do is sooo good.
I have been excited to dine at Smith & Porter. I was not let down! I had the filet and he had the halibut, both cooked to perfection! The polenta was so creamy and smooth, with a bit of tang and bite from the sauteed mushrooms and red pepper. The flourless chocolate torte with hot fudge and Izzy's vanilla ice cream was decadent. I even took one home to the kids! As for the service...Unparalleled. Friendly and attentive, yet not intrusive. Smith & Porter is an amazing addition to the Mill City neighborhood. Next Up...Porter Cafe!
A hidden gem. We loved everything we ordered. From the charcuterie board to dessert. Fresh, local and creative dishes. Just lovely. Great bar as well.
Waiting at the host station for 15 minutes with reservations was a bit obnoxious, bit the Lamb Ribs were something to check out. The sweet potatoes were the start of my show with Bjorn as the leading actor!
I have been to Smith and Porter 5 times in the last month, every meal has been excellent, staff is friendly and down to earth.
Love this Place, and Amanda behind the bar knows how pour a drink.
Good was great, the waitress was wonderful, but the reservation system was blamed for the host not reading notes from open table because it is too hard to be responsible for the request of customers on the system.
I enjoy the atmosphere and they make really great sangria - their appitizers are always pretty average tasting, and the prices are too high for the quality and portions.
As always the food and service were both great. I had the burger and it was very good and our waitress was johnny on the spot anytime we needed anything.
Very comfortable place to have dinner. Entree choices are good and a good selection. Drinks were reasonable as well as the menu prices.
Would recommend.
Surprisingly good food and we'll thought out menu. Reduced menu during covid-19, but didn't disappoint.
This is a stylish, well put together place. Everything from the menu to the decor is well-thought-out. The happy hour is pretty decent too
Love Smith & Porter! Excited to hear they are open again. A wonderful experience each time. Good food. Good service. Easy parking.
Our experience at Smith & Porter on a weeknight was fabulous. The service was great, the food was very good. This is one of our new favorite restaurants!
A birthday celebration for me! Delicious steak, cheese platter and creme brulee for dessert. Awesome wait person.
Wonderful Brunch- Egg White Omlette and S&P Toad in the hole with a pancake between wife and I. Service was excellent and great atmosphere next to fireplace on a cold MN day.
Service was good and friendly. Food was inventive and the priced reasonably. Happy with the experience, but not a knockout.
The food was awesome, Anthony was our server & he made the experience even greater! We would come back & ask for him any day.
Fantastic food. My friend said her scallops were in the top 5 best she's EVER had.
Awesome new restaurant! The food was great and the service was excellent. Already making plans to go back.
Great upscale restaurant. Basically everything you would expect. Server and person who checked us in were very helpful and polite.
Great food and service, highly recommend the steam bun appetizer. Food was cooked to perfection.

A variety of offerings uniformly well prepared. I enjoyed the Korean BBQ lamb ribs.

Need better staff
My experience dining at Smith & Porter has been a positive one. The team they have built is very friendly, kind, and accommodating. The atmosphere is pleasant, simple, and welcoming. My favorite menu items include the Club sandwich on the lunch menu (available gluten free!), the Juicy Lucy Sliders on the bar menu, and of course the tenderloin on the dinner menu. I have dinned in as a group or on a solo mission, each time has been to my satisfactory. If you are looking for a hidden gem, S&P could be a suitable option for a date night as well. As a local in the neighborhood, I hope S&P finds the success they are searching for. Additionally, I wish the team at Smith & Porter all the best! Salud!
