Reviews of Sidewalk Kitchen
see images for their recent menu.
I ordered their combination veg options and a veg fried rice. they were good. Food is decent. Quantity was reasonable too. It could be a challenge if you want to customize your dishes since there might be a language problem. They charge extra for hot oil I feel that is silly for the price. Almost every other Chinese restaurant gives it for free.
Overall experience was decent.
No real complaints—solid authentic Hong Kong style cuisine. The pork belly was a bit too salty for my taste but it’s not really worth complaining about. Pricing was a little on the steeper end and it seems like tips were mandatory which is…a little rude? Language barriers can occur as well so be ware. Other than that, it’s great food, and I can see myself coming back. The salt and pepper wings especially were fantastic. Very juicy and tender, which is surprisingly rare at Chinese places where they tend to be almost a bit drier. The appetizer was solid as well. The free water they give is very lackluster though.
Extremely authentic Cantonese food here! This is by far the best authentic Chinese restaurant I’ve tried during traveling to Minnesota. I highly recommend for you all if you would like to try Chinese foods!
Sidewalk Kitchen always amazes me with new dishes. In the last two weeks I have eaten the eel rice and tripe/brisket pot. Both dishes were so good. This is my favorite HK/Cantonese style restaurant in the Twin Cities.
Food was spectacular and price isn’t too bad at all. I ordered few dishes most them were cooked to perfection! The sizzling intestine was probably the best version of its kind. I wouldn’t go for spicy stew because it’s not Cantonese original per se. If you stick with the Cantonese dishes, you will love every single of them.
They do have the Fantastic food Hong-Kong' Style kitchen we love it very much!of course they're having a super Services 👌 at the place
My friend referred me to this authentic Chinese restaurant when I visit Minnesota. I ordered golden shrimp 🦐 , it is so tasty 😋! You must try it! Another one is szechuan poached beef, it is the best option out of other places. My son likes the seafood with white sauce a lot too. I also ordered tea with milk and lemon ice tea in an authentic-hong-kong style. Definitely recommend 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hometown taste😭😭😭😭😭😭so happy to find this place, best Cantonese restaurant in Mid-West! …
A little pricey but very authentic. To be honest I wanted it to be burn my face off spicy but it wasn't. Spice level was very Minnesota friendly. Lots and lots of choices for sure. I'll have to try Hong Kong Noodle next door next time!
I have ordered Honey BBQ pork, General Tsao chicken and chicken wings as an appetizer. My chicken wings came at the end. I think appetizers should come first and then entrees. Wings were not tasty at all, so dry, no sauce. Food wasn’t delicious as I expected. Didn’t beat Shuang Cheng in Dinkytown. Staff were too loud and restaurant was empty when we get there.
Very authentic Cantonese food! This is by far the best authentic Chinese restaurant I’ve tried! I didn’t get a picture of the rice with char siu, but that one is very tasty too!
I love this place! They have a good selection on their menu and a Chinese only chalkboard menu that they can read off for you. I love that they also serve ovaltine and lots of dishes with rice. Bathroom is clean and nice too.
Fantastic food and wonderful people. They were kind enough to make the sizzling tofu vegetarian for me--and it was the best dish I've tried in a long time.
This is an excellent place near the University of Minnesota with free parking. The customer service was fantastic. The serving time was great. The inside temperature of the restaurant was great. They have a large number of options for a variety of diets and spice tolerance. Looking around, everyone seemed to enjoy their food.
I ordered the lemon juice chicken, sesame chicken, and the curry tofu and vegetables on rice. The portions compared with price, especially for the deal lunch options were outstanding for this type of restaurant in this location. I took leftovers from a $10 meal.
We came here for lunch. The service was super fast (it was during a blizzard so it wasn't very busy). The food was great. We each got a lunch special; Moo goo gai pan with lo mein (pictured), General Tso's chicken and Sesame chicken. Every entree was so good! The noodles were delicious and I was not expecting the soup, which was also yummy on a cold day. Lunch specials were $8 (plus an extra $1if you want fried rice or lo mein rather than white rice) so we got a ton of food for a great price. It was 2 meals for me. I can't wait to come back!
This is the most authentic feeling of eating at a traditional Hong Kong sidewalk restaurant I have had in the US since returning from HK. The staff was welcoming, the food delicious, and the prices quite fair. 5-stars; would recommend.
Love love love the flavors! They open on Christmas Eve and the dishes are super delicious.
Totally would come back for more:)
😋 …
Very good food from a new restaurant. They have a really cool neon sign outside that draws you in. The Staff was very friendly. The food came out almost instantly. I would definitely come back again and recommend to my friends.
Awesome new restaurant and the best Chinese in Campus. Friendly and delicious. I ordered the grilled Beef short ribs today is the BEST!!! Great value, Great service at campus area. You must eat here!!!
I regularly go to all three cantonese-style restaurants on these two blocks and they are all good in various ways. I would always go to Sidewalk for their roasted meat items and the very Hong Kong - specific items, such as the Cantonese style lo mein, beef briskets, hot pots, for example. Their roasted items are very well seasoned and marinated. The portion is also very generous. For $40 of food it can probably last for 4-5 meals for me, with a bit of rice cooked at home and veggies. The food quality is very consistent and is fresh and well prepared.
Ordered the seafood fried noodles. Was a pretty simple dish, presentation was humble. The leeks worked well, and the shrimp was delicious/went perfectly with the sauce. But the squid tentacles felt overcooked, and the sauce, however good it was, wasn't well dispersed through noodles. Super great crisp on the noodles. Left with a clean plate, but nothing really stood out in the dish that would draw me back in a hurry.
Great food, can only speak for delivery/pick-up. Highly recommend the chow fun beef XO sauce, the salted fish and chicken fried rice, and eggplant. Cantonese-style foods restaurant, staff seem friendly. Price is a bit on the expensive side but you get a lot for your money. Parking is a bit tricky considering you’re in the University area, you may have to find street parking or park at a nearby lot as I don’t believe the restaurant itself has its own lot.
I'm from Hong Kong and moved to the Twin Cities a few years ago. It has been hard missing all my favorite foods! I tried so many Chinese restaurants but finally Sidewalk Kitchen is what I have been looking for! It tastes like home!!! THANK YOU!!! My favorite is the white pepper pork stomach pot, but the best part is, they have lots of delicious options for the non-Asian Minnesotan family members too!
We always stop by Sidewalk Kitchen whenever we are in the U of M area. Their dishes are very delicious and servers are attentive and friendly. Some of our favorite dishes are Sizzling Egg Tofu, Special Ma La Chicken Pot and Homemade Fish Ball with Curry Sauce pot. My son always gets his favorite - Sliced Beef with Scrambled Eggs over Rice. Love their HK Style Milk Tea and Lemon Tea as well. So happy there is an authentic Chinese / Cantonese restaurant in town!
Insane menu and outstanding dishes. Probably aimed at vert hungry students...I could not finish my super tasty bowl of noodle soup. Very good deal for, what tasted like, homemade food. Very recommended!
Double and triple check your take out order before you leave. They WILL “forget” some items on your order. Way to ruin Chinese New Year after tipping them extra for take out. Not going back.

Edit: wow, the business actually reached out to me and apologized. On top of that, was very patient and explained the situation to me, and promised giving the missing item for free the next time. Honestly, this is the first time a business reaches out and wants to make things right. I'm very impressed!
Great food and service, very authentic HK-style cuisine (I am originally from HK). Highly recommend milk tea, lemon tea, beef triple/brisket with special broths.
Good restaurant for quality food, Hong Kong style.
Very delicious and authentic Chinese food! Try the lamb pot.
Just as good, if not better, than Chinese food in SF Bay Area. Cumin lamb very good, although expensive. Portions very large.
Really good and authentic cantonese food.
The foods are authentic, delicious and excellent quality. Services are very good as well. Lunch special is affordable and large portion. Love this place and the food.
Great food, Great atmosphere. We got the last table and i knew it would be good and authentic when we were the only Caucasians.
I ordered the Wonton in Chili Oil and Shanghai Steamed Pork Bun, they are delicious. If you like spicy and wonton, must give it a try, you will fall in love with it. The Shanghai Steamed Pork Bun is not as authentic as the one in China, but this is so far the best I have eaten in Minnesota.
The best Chinese restaurant I’ve gone to so far in Minneapolis. Ive been many times and have tried many different dishes and all are tasteful and filling. The plates aren’t loaded down with vegetables and the prices are the same compared to most standard Chinese restaurants. All the workers there are very friendly and consistent. The ambience of the restaurant is perfect, with an open kitchen and lovely decor. I hope this place flourishes for years to come.
We had the most fabulous experience here, the dining room, while smaller, was packed and we were lucky to get in. The menu spoke for itself as being one of the largest menus I’ve ever seen filled with delicious sounding items that I have never tried. After perusing the menu we finally decided on steamed dumplings as an appetizer (which are my favorite) which were absolutely delicious, the sauce that came with it was the highlight even though we could not figure out what it was. I settled on the beef and broccoli dinner special and got heaps of white rice with my huge portion of food and two cream cheese puffs for under $10. I had to take most of it home. My partner got the sweet and sour chicken dinner special with lo mein and cream cheese puffs with an equally large portion. We had to say that this was one of the most authentic places we’ve found and we will be returning because of the amazing food! 10/10 would recommend!
Amazing service and incredible food. I would highly recommend the sesame chicken meal. It was incredibly cheap for the amount of food we got. I would compare the price to a traditional fast food Chinese place, so about 8-10 dollars a plate. But there are also higher end dishes I'm the 30-40 dollar range. I am truly impressed and will be returning!!
Best Authentic Hong Kong style food around!!! Highly recommend!!!!!
The foods here is great! We were looking for a dinner on Sunday evening, we chose Sidewalk Kitchen from the reviews on yelp. Wound the service to be excellent knowledgeable and friendly. We ordered appetizers for Citrus Spare Ribs and Thai Style Chicken Wings , all were brought out in a timely manner and very tasty.
Service: All the servers were very friendly and attentive. They came over and checked in to make sure we were enjoying our food.
Food: Wonton noodle soup and Roast Duck was tasty!
Want to try more different foods here soon! Strongly recommend!
I love this place. This restaurant has quickly become the go-to place for both my wife and me. It has a traditional Cantonese taste with a modern spin. We highly recommend the sizzling egg tofu and the house special stir fry!
Just had the lunch special, nothing fancy. It was cooked very well, veggies we're crisp and everything had a rich flavor. Would recommend. The pallette was definitely MN-friendly even though I ordered a "spicy dish" (could be a pro or con) depending on your point of view.
Fantastic food. Lo Mein and Fun are 💯💯💯 and the pork steamed buns are worth the wait. Be sure to try the HK milk tea or lemon tea
Best authentic Hong Kong style / Cantonese Chinese food in the Twin Cities. They even have a real Chinese BBQ oven they shipped from overseas so they have excellent roasted duck and BBQ pork. The best beef chow fun and Singapore noodles.
Very authentic chinese food! I recommend it more than Hong Kong Noodle!
This is a great Cantonese cuisine at the University. Services was great and the food is very delicious!
Excellent customer service, a restaurant full of very hard workers! The food was really good and would suggest getting the fried custard— not overly sweet and a good consistency
Food was good, selection was varied but price us out if line, even before Ukrainian war.
Most authentic Chinese food I’ve ever had. Not sugary and Americanized like most places where I live.
Excellent authentic Cantonese cuisine with generous portions at reasonable prices. Also has quite good Szechuan favorites as well.
Super friendly and polite staff and owner.
I am a big fan of wonton soup noodle and this place did not disappoint. The soup is tasty like how they make it in Hong Kong. The wonton is alright, but it did not take away from the overall experience.
On a side note, the fried custard was super tasty.
Very impressed with their Hong Kong style setup and the authentic Cantonese dishes offered. One of the few restaurants in the US to offer “Deep Fried Milk Pudding” appetizer. Must try!
Overall attentive & better service than most. Outstanding unique menu that combines the best of homestyle and street food variants of popular asian-chinese cuisine compared to other cookie-cutter canto-chinese restaurants in the area. Well curated menu that offers dishes that celebrates variety in flavors & texture & mouthfeel. A true gem.
New Chinese Restaurant introduced by my friend. One of my favorite Chinese Restaurant in the Twin Cities. The foods are so delicious. Compared nearby Chinese restaurants, this place is the best. The service are very friendly and happy.
Clean place!!!! Probably the best one in Campus area.
Great service and really good Kung Pao chicken.
One of the better Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities. Parking spaces are very limited.
Very good wontons for a really good price! Best wintons I've ever had :). Bit of a wait for them, but its worth it 👌 …
Always love the chicken dishes. Many of the appetizers are great, too. One of the best Chinese places in Stadium Village.
Great choices, don't get the chicken though-- almost always ends up overcooked.
Great meal deals! Love the choice of cream cheese wontons over the eggroll as well. Portions are good size and the sharables are some great options as well.
Our goto Chinese place in the Twin Cities! Love their beef chow fun!
Legit hongkong and guangdong food. Very close to authentic. top 3 chinese restaurant in minnesota. but their food is pricier than average price of chinese food.
We will definitely come back for more.
Amazing place to eat. The service here is very efficient, fast, and kind. Have been here many times and it's always good to come back.
Great food - great customer service - clean place
Great food and service!
Authentic dishes, huge menu, great service, fast. Try it, you'll like it!
Best Chinese food I've tasted in the area. Makes food properly spicy when asked. Black pepper pork recommended
Fairly nicely done Chinese food.
Given the portion and price, this is not a bad place to have some Cantonese food. But the quality and authenticity is questionable.
The quality of this place is unlike any other I've seen. The food is very tasty and abundant. 5 stars!
Quite authentic Cantonese cuisine! Very tasty and can't wait to try more dishes.
chicken lo mein, white rice, fried and steamed dumplings and everything was amazing!
Excellent place for cheap non generic Asian food on campus. Lunch specials are awesome!
The Vietnamese half of this place is quite awesome for lunch. Both regarding price, quantity and quality.
A very good place to eat authentic Chinese food, and their food is not greasy and a lot of varieties.
Interesting dishes but menu is too large. Simplify and focus on quality for a few dishes.
Authentic HK / Cantonese cuisine ... close to home & heart (or stomach) / explore the nonAmerican Chinese fare and you'll be very pleasantly surprised
This place is amazing! it makes me feel like i'm back at home with GOOD home cook meals.
Always good food and lunch specials are a great price.
Authentic, excellent cuisine
Very good food, fair price. But the noise is a little too loud in the restaurant.
Very authentic Hong Kong food, good quality and selection
The food was amazing and the service was fast as lightning.
The newly coming out Pork feets are tasty! So are the clam pot!
What a great place I've never been there but it seems wonderful. Very large menu.
Would rate 5 stars if not that expensive ($50 for 3 dishes)
This place is really good I go like every week there service is fast very kind and food really tasty
Chinese food very good !I'll be back!
Delicious food and very nice staff! And very fast!
Great food, especially mongolian beef!
The meal was delicious & their service was fast
Great food! Awesome owner.
Good service + Well cooked food.
Always like their new dishes on the blackboard
Good quality of food. Little pricy.
This is a hidden gem! Authentic Chinese food
Best Asian food in a long time
Lunch specials are a good deal

Grear tso's at a grear price!
Fantastic place to eat.
Love it
It was very good
Solid takeout
delicious food
Exquisite.
1st let me tell you that why i give them 4 stars, their service 2 waitresses were really nice n patient n listed what i requested about gluten free like no soy sauce n oyster sauce n salt only, cuz one of family has allergic to gluten. but the foods we ordered were not good quality like Cantonese style sweet sour pork were really lots of fat in the dish n i meant literally 80% were fat n we couldn't eat it, of course i didn't request to give us new one, we understand that during pandemic years everyone has hard time, but that doesn't mean that they can do business like this n give customers bad quality foods, so i dont recommend this Cantonese style sweet sour pork to anyone at all. do not order this sweet sour pork otherwise you will be end up eating ton of fat n its bad for our health. also curry beef brisket was really salty to us too, 3rd the garlic favor pea tip was not tender at all too that night. yeah the seafood pot was only had 3 shrimps in there too, if you have more than 4 people then its not enough shrimps for everyone lol. parking was not that easy too at downtown Minneapolis as always. i dont think i will go back there til they improve their foods quality, please do not destroy your own business . Thanks. steam white chicken was not bad. i asked add spicy to curry beef brisket, they didn't put spicy instead add more salt in there lol.
(Translation) I ordered 3 servings and it was okay, but I don’t know what to say about the white-cut chicken. The texture of the meat is not very good, it’s not tender, it seems very soft
(Original)
点了3份都还行,就是白切鸡不知道怎么说,肉质口感不是很好,不是嫩的,好像很绵
(Translation) Light and delicious~ Full of Hong Kong feeling
(Original)
清淡好吃~ 滿香港的感覺
(Translation) There are many dishes in the food stall that taste very good. I personally recommend curry beef brisket, cowboy bones, and chicken pot.

大排档有好多菜品味道都很好,个人推荐咖喱牛腩,牛仔骨,鸡锅
