Reviews of Owamni by The Sioux Chef

Wow! I’m absolutely floored by our breathtaking experience at Owamni - By The Sioux Chef! My partner and I have been looking forward to this night for months, and it exceeded our expectations! We were treated to a unique and delightful winter tasting menu comprised of mouthwatering dishes that made the most unexpected flavor/texture pairings so enticing.
I chose garden and field, crab and corn dumplings, walleye 3 ways, and the ice cream sandwich. I also ordered a mocktail. We were also given a complimentary mix at the start of the meal that reminded us of elevated granola but included some very tasty and crunch crickets. We loved it.
Everything tasted exquisite, but the garden and field and walleye stood out the most to me. The garden and field sounds like it would be a salad, but it was actually more of a salad jelly. Hard to describe because it’s so delicious and unique, so let me just say- it was one of the most inventive and whimsical dishes I’ve ever tried. It was smoky, chewy, and crunchy with a medley of flavors that created a glorious symphony. It sounds dramatic- but what can I say- I was enraptured. The walleye 3 ways included smoked walleye, pickled walleye, and walleye cake. Each preparation was so tasty, and it was really fun to try each one.
The corn and crab dumplings were also delicious. I especially enjoyed the layer of beans under the dumplings. The seafood broth was tasty and not overly fishy- delicate and subtle.
The ice cream sandwich was the one dish I wasn’t fully sold on. It was quite good but nothing too unique or exciting. I’m a huge dessert fan, so perhaps my expectations were too high in that regard.
Overall, it was such an incredible dining experience all around. The staff was warm and welcoming. The space was well-designed and unpretentious. I’ve never been to an indigenous restaurant, and I feel grateful to have had this opportunity. We’re already planning a summer visit…

I would highly recommend Owamni! We ate family-style and tried the cedar + maple baked beans, roast sweet potato, wild rice, three sisters fritter (entree), and sunbutter bar (dessert).
We appreciated the many vegan and vegetarian options. Everything was tasty, but we agreed that our favorite items were the sweet potato and three sister fritters. Our least favorite choice was the baked beans. Every dish had a beautiful presentation and nuanced flavors.
The view from the tables was stunning, overlooking the Mississippi. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. We appreciated the opportunity to experience and to support local indigenous cuisine.

Such a unique dining experience! Getting a reservation was tough but definitely worth the wait. There was a song and dance performance that began just as our reservation did. Lovely to be surrounded by so much culture, and pride for that culture. Definitely one of the more thought out restaurants I have ever been to. Looking forward to trying all the seasonal menus!
Pics are of: Smother Trout Spread, Duck Sausage, Sweet Potato, Sunbutter Bar, Iced Blueberry Tea, and the Rhubarb drink.

Our experience at Owamni was amazing! We were able to be seated right away on the patio as patio seating was first come first serve. The only drawback of patio seating is they do not serve the specials on the patio.
The food was outstanding. I definitely recommend ordering a few dishes and sharing. Each dish we ordered had a unique flavour, and all the flavours worked so well together. There is a wine and beer list but also a great selection of teas to choose from. I ordered the back country iced tea and it was a perfect accompaniment to our meal. I look forward to coming back to try other menu items!

We were lucky enough to get a 4:15pm reservation at this extremely popular restaurant and it more than lived up to the hype. Not only were the dishes yummy but they were also beautiful with edibles flowers, fruit, and petals. They had interesting non-alcoholic drink options, also beer and wine. Our server with his New Zealand accent was funny, attentive, and smart! Highly recommend!

The food was amazing. The atmosphere was even better. Really enjoyed the trout and bean dip and three sisters corn sandwich. The sweet potatoes were amazing as well. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the sunflower bar. The food was fresh. Would recommend trying once.

I enjoyed the overall experience. I was a single walk in and was.luxky enough to be sat almost immediately at the bar. The restaurant was booked completely and I saw at least one walk in party turned away.
I had heard of the restaurant in Sioux Falls and had been planning on making a trip to Minneapolis to give the food a try.
I was not disappointed in the least. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the new dishes that I experienced.
I would like to be able to buy the cricket seed appetizer as a daily snack. It was such a delightful mix of salty, crunchy and sweet with just a kick of spice. The game tartar was well balanced and each ingredient just added to the depth of flavor of the dish.
The Bison Tenderloin was remarkably tender and cooked to a perfect rare. The sweet potato onion hash was a great accompaniment to the dish.
Finally the wild rice sorbet for dessert. I will be honest and say it was not to my liking, but was still a refreshing end to a wonderful meal.
The staff was courteous and prompt. I will definitely return to try more of the dishes on the menu.

Fantastic food and service. Lovely outdoor dining patio with view of the river and skyline. Absolutely would recommend. The bison tacos were my favorite but honestly everything was very delicious. They're regularly booked so we got lucky with walking in right around when they open for dinner.

Had a really enjoyable dinner and it was a very unique and delicious experience. The menu is fascinating and we wanted to try everything. For two people we ordered 5 dishes + split a desert and that was a perfect amount for us. We will absolutely come back!

Now I know why the restaurant was awarded for the best new restaurant. Their food is amazing. The duck sausage and the green sauce when you eat separately, it doesn’t stand out much but the combination between the two just elevated the dish. Cedar maple bison has that sweetness and the smoky taste. Elk sandwich is my favorite, it has a perfect combination with all the flavors: sweet, savory and a little bit of spicy. Our drink is good and it’s non alcoholic. Overall it’s worth the money and I would come back to try other dishes from the Sioux chef
