Reviews of Modern Times

I love Modern Times! The building and the way it's decorated is so fun- very warm and inviting! The staff is consistently kind, and are usually wearing outfits with so much personality. And the food! Not only do they have meat/veg/vegan iterations of I believe the whole menu, they are all delicious and hearty. I love all their salsas and various sauces. Get a cinnamon roll and any of their coffee drinks while there!

Some of the best vegan food in the Twin Cities. There are so many awesome options to choose from. The pictured vegan breakfast burrito is my favorite, and I also love the vegan spicy avocado burger. Super duper highly recommended! 🌱

Modern Times is a classic Minneapolis cafe. I’m obsessed with their fresh food, huge portions, creative dishes, general vibe, and progressive politics. Everyone who works there is always friendly, and I love how anyone can find something they’ll like on the menu - vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free etc. It’s an inclusive and cool space with incredible food. Highly recommend.

The 4 stars are mainly for the food. Our group ordered 4 dishes and all of them were amazing! I especially liked the cabbage salsa.
However, the waitstaff was extremely short and rude. When we stood in line to place our order, there were a lot of customizations available to choose from and the person behind the register behaved as if we were inconveniencing her by ordering. After having waited for 50 minutes for our food, when we asked how much longer it would be, the waitress responded with a shrug and 'I don't know that' and did not bother following up or checking. I understand that they were swamped at peak time but that does not excuse the behavior.
The excellent food was the only redeeming factor of the whole experience.

Wow, absolutely amazing! I think this is my favorite vegan food I’ve had in a not exclusively vegan restaurant. Wonderful vibes, great service, and absolutely flavorful food. I’m excited to go back and try more of their menu items!
Jennifer Brindley
Absolutely adored everything we got! South side hash with tortillas and an avocado. French toast. The Reuben. All class A winners!!! Incredible flavors. I wish we lived here!
Daniel Gerland
Excellent place for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. I especially enjoyed the specialty coffee options and the unique variety on the menu. They even offered an all vegan menu. There are many gluten-free menu items as well.it can get pretty busy but it is well worth it

I have never felt the urge to give a place more than five stars like I feel for this place. I honestly did not know what to expect when I googled vegan restaurant but the fact that they were able to cater so many of my dietary restrictions especially the gluten-free with so many options! I have never felt so at home. I almost wish I could take the entire restaurant back home with me $23 for my meal and had left overs BEYOND DELISH Oh I do also want to point out I am not a breakfast person for the same reason I always struggle to find a place where I can eat that’s gluten-free and has other options outside of eggs which I also don’t eat.
Hash browns 100/10 SOO CRISPY AND CRUNCHY GUYS!!
Tofu-CRISPY AND CRUNCHY IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU IT CANT BE DONE… they’re lying.
Kale- delish 9/10 because eveythjng else was just like a yumgasm
Ginger lemonade -100/100 lol
I will come back and bring cash YALL FOR TIP!!
Katherine Larson
Breakfast with bacon (!) well prepared and delicious. They have vegan options as well. Heard about this place for a while and glad I finally made it . Reasonable prices. My party of 4 all had satisfying breakfasts and the lunch menu was tempting.
LO
I absolutely love the food and staff here. They provide a giant selection of gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options- it’s absolutely a crowd pleaser. This place gets busy, so the earlier you arrive - the better chance you won’t be on a wait. Menu items to try: chakra khan, wild rice blueberry pancakes, carnitas hash, and good morning healing earth bowl. Make sure to tell the staff their amazing before you leave this establishment.

Really cool place with really good food and really long wait times. I placed a carry-out order for 2 sandwiches and was surprised/annoyed that they said it would be 45 minutes. It was more like 70 minutes. While I waited in the place for ~40 minutes, not one of the several people who were seated while I was there had gotten their food yet by the time I left. This was Sunday between 11 and 2 so maybe this is their rush period, but it’s NOT a quick place—don’t wait until you’re hungry to order. Our two sandwiches and fries were REALLY good, which is why it still gets 5 stars. The staff themselves weren’t bad or rude, it was just a very slow process. It’s a great grungy and original local diner where you can come as you are and all types are welcome. We will definitely be back if we can budget the requisite time.
Rowan
my favorite cafe in Minneapolis! best vegan breakfast hands down. the staff is awesome. I love the lemon Serrano hot sauce they have, I wish I could buy it
jennifer ej
Got a very delicious veggie bowl with tofu, the tahini sauce added such a great flavor! My kid loved their vegetarian basic kid. New favorite spot!
James Mackenzie
I absolutely love the vibes and the foods. So good. The endless coffee is no joke they don't dilute like a classic diner.
Roy's Reels
Amazing hashbrown rancheros, with an okay breakfast burrito. I felt the burrito was a lil lackluster, the flavors felt one track, but they were good. The rancheros were phenomenal, exactly what i wanted. The homemade sauces were also incredible.
Also got a cinnamon roll, which was very mediocre.
Roxanne De
Great service, amazing food, good times
Chase Clendenen
Let me start by saying this is one of our top places to go for an awesome breakfast in Minneapolis. Our last visit I got the daily special of "Lamb of God" which was phenomenal! We have yet to have a bad experience eating at the restaurant other than the fact that it can get quite busy on the weekend and you might end up having to wait a little bit to get a seat. The number of tables is limiting, but understandable since it's not a huge space to begin with.
But to get to the brass tacks, I love the variety and quality of ingredients that they use to create their dishes. They have a wide variety of vegan substitute options for those looking for a great eggless breakfast. On top of all of their stellar food performance is superb coffee! I generally always grab an endless dip coffee cup everytime we visit, but we've certainly stopped by more than once to pickup some of their special coffee beverages (shot out to the "Dirty Dancing" beverage if you like horchata)
Jane Natoli
The fact that I never went here when I lived in Minneapolis is unconscionable. Don’t make my mistake! Meals to please all dietary restrictions that will fill you up. It’s a breakfast that I think about every time I’m getting ready to come back and visit, don’t take it for granted!

I wanted to catch the bus near the cafe and missed it. So I went into Modern Times and ordered two delicious corn tacos with chicken. They were really very good. The staff was very helpful and friendly and my server wore a wonderful dress, looking very nice for work. I was so surprised when I got the bill, how affordable it is and as a no tipping establishment they charge only a very modest service fee, I feel this cafe goes above and beyond to provide affordable delicious food and great service. This is my third visit and every time is great.
Megan Leys
Amazing food, drinks, service and wonderful place to hang outside. Highly recommend! Also have great vegan and vegetarian options.
Adriane Gilbert
Stopped for lunch with my family. Everyone loved their sandwiches, burgers and burritos. It’s so nice to be able to order a vegetarian reuben. The quality and service was top notch!
Emily Barry
This was one of the best brunches I've had in a long time. I ordered the polenta rancheros with avocado and it was magnificent. The polenta was nicely crisp and it was smothered in a perfectly spicy red sauce with delicious cabbage salsa on the side. Highly recommend. I also ordered the house made chai and it was easily the best I've had. Modern Times is definitely worth a visit.
Caleb Melendez-Apple
This place is just so darn lovely. Everyone that works here is so flipping sweet and they have the best vegan breakfast burrito, donuts, and coffee! Hooray for this place
Conal Garrity
With all the old favorites a distant memory (Triple Rock, Grumpy's DT, Seward Cafe, Birchwood Cafe, Uptown, etc al) this place is a gem! Staff is phenomenal. Did I mention great food here too?
Hilary Callahan
Delicious and comfortable. Be sure to ask about and order the unique baked goods. We tried the matcha donut.
Grace
Always phenomenal for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Very acommodating to those who may be gluten intolerant, lactose intolerant, vegetarian, and/or vegan.
The garlic kale with tahini sauce and roasted beets make my day every time.
Please, for the love of all that is good, try their specials at least thrice! (Always perfect.)
Lola Baby T.V.
I had the Cabbie sandwich for lunch it was ok. Well I'm sure many will enjoy their food, it's fresh, made to order and good for you. Not sure if it's worth $8.50 but anyway it's a nice cozy spot, that play's loud music, un-sure of the type of music. Has many veggy options, very nice for veggie lovers. I'm big on taste and favor i enjoy good seasonings, pepper, salt, etc. But Modern Times food was good natural and fresh but it was not seasoned not even salt on the eggs. My receipt asked for a tip of 20% or more I'm not leaving a tip for a pick up or take out order.
christina marie Johnson
Absolutely adore the modern vegan. Options for Meehan, vegetarian, and carnivores! Yum! Diner vibe and great food!
Paul Clausen
This diner has a variety of carnivore, vegetarian and vegan options. A good neighborhood place for breakfast or lunch.
Rachelle Then
It’s a breakfast/brunch institution. Get the Good Morning Healing Earth, with curried tofu! It hasn’t failed me. Or if you’re particularly ravenous, the breakfast burrito is awesome!
Patrick Garcia
First time coming to Modern Times and I will be going back. I had the elote impossible burger and it was delicious. I had their café con miel (iced honey cinnamon latte) to go with my lunch and I would highly suggest it.
Kevin Symanietz
Good food, good service, hip environment. The coffee is great! I had the vegan pancakes with veggie sausage and crispy hash browns. All really delicious.
Adam B
Their entire vegan menu is can't miss. I get something new every time and have never been disappointed
John B
First time here. Friendly staff, amazing coffee, and good food. Quaint little neighbor cafe. I'll definitely be back
Pres CarlJohn
Some of the friendliest & helpful servers I've ever had wait on us. Tips are included so it works... Living wage workers are happier.
And the food (vegan, vegetarian, & carnivore) was great!
Kalia Montgomery Montez
I went for a late brunch on a Sunday afternoon and it was jam packed! The wait time was 45 mins- 1 hr. The restaurant was filled to standing room in their waiting area too. SO WORTH IT!! They got us coffees while we waited and we were able to sit I'm their merch room and chat prior to being seated. The servers were all friendly and communicated well with long wait times. I got their French toast and a half order of hash and it was AMAZING!!! 11/10 would recommend and will absolutely be making this a regular brunch spot.
Amy Morton
This is incredibly good

Truly a hidden gem. Huge portions, amazing local ingredients and great options for vegetarians and vegans without compromising anything!
Miss B. G. GOTMS
MY FAVORITE OF ALL FAVORITES!
MONDAY, TUESDAY & FRIDAY ARE GOTTA GO'S THE DONUTS ARE A TREAT. THE WHOLE PLACE IS A TREAT😋
Sarah
I dig it!
Every dish is capable of being veganized, which is sweet. Good, messy, comfort food. The only way it could be better is if there was even just one vegan option that was soy-free.
That said, their specials are always amazing, as is their beverage menu.
Kashi Maya Tamang
I like this place. They always have good vegan options and nice roomy seating. There is always a slight bit of a wait but it’s never an issue because it’s worth it. They are good at respecting mask use and covid safety in the waiting room. Cute bathroom and nice staff.
Philip B
Excellent staff, amazing food, and a laid back atmosphere. However, not being able to put an additional tip on top of the service charge via credit card is a form a wage theft which is really disappointing. I hope the owners of compensating the staff through their wages for this change but I doubt it.
Cynthia Wesley
I was visiting from Philly and a gentleman in the area recommended Modern Times. It was great. The staff were attentive, friendly and cool. The food was fresh and delicious. Would recommend.
Saadullah Bashir
Great place for breakfast. Nearly everything is/can be made vegan/vegetarian. Too many delicious items to list. The drinks and sweet treats are a must try. If you're ever in Minneapolis, and looking for a place to get vegan/vegetarian breakfast/lunch, do stop by. Highly recommended!
Kelly Zelna
Delicious food with friendly and attentive service! A++ will visit again.
Linnea Halsten
Really yummy food and friendly from vegans to meat eaters! You can get everything from a delicious salad with yummy tempe to a huge burger and garlic fries here. Love checking out their weekly specials. Employees are always nice and food is consistently delicious. I highly recommend their cabbage salsa and garlic fries!
Michael Freeman
I have gotten a different plate every time and after my 7th time here I just have to say WOW how is it possible to make this so awesome for so little and so LOCAL!
Missy Isles
Super yummy! We found this in City Pages Best of the Twin Cities for best Brunch. My husband got a burger and fries (oh, those fries!), and I got the southwest bowl. Both were super good and made us both remark that we'd like to return. Had to wait a while for our food, but there was a line of people and it was a lovely Sunday morning, perfect for brunch time. Definitely worth a stop!
jesse james johnson
Don't miss those vegan donuts on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. But if you find yourself here on another day of the week you're still going to be happy with the grub you order. With sandwiches like the Johnathan Rickman or the Southside bowl you're going to enjoy your meal.
Jay Cox
Wonderful vegan options, large portions, funky atmosphere. Nearly all of the menu items can be customized to suit vegan/vegetarian diets. The staff was friendly and helpful. Wish the napkins were better and the music was less loud (went early). Super delicious and highly recommended!
Rosa Garcia
Best food/price/ppl. Be nice to them! ;)
Lindsey
Modern Times is the literal best spot in town. Featuring a home-grown menu with lots of TLC and high-quality options for every dietary preference. Unique, rustic menu with the very best vegan breakfast in town!! Love their specialty drinks too.
Amber Orvis
Best vegan breakfast in Minneapolis! Get the Vegan Southside Hash, you will not be disappointed. Service is always great and the atmosphere is so fun!
Lori Brooks
Don't settle for a mediocre brunch...save your money for this place! The polenta poblano bowl was a treat: crispy polenta cubes with beans, a tangy but not over powering sauce & (for me) a medium fried egg on top. Creamy, tangy, crunchy...hit all the right brunch notes. Meals have enough layers of flavor & textures to please vegans, vegetarians & carnivores. Bacon was also great, btw! Got a little pricey but that's because everything looked good....and actually was very good! Fresh & lightly pickled veggies beat the typical overly cheesy & fatty brunch menus out there!
J Sage
Place is so cool. Wait staff has great style, food was really really good, awesome music too
Cleo Pupillo
Everyone I know loves Modern Times, and somehow it still seems underrated to me. I could talk about how every menu has multiple options to accommodate meat eaters, vegetarians, gluten free folks, and vegans alike- but what’s really incredible is the amount of love they put into every part of the menu. Everything is made from scratch and EVERYTHING tastes good.
Billie JL
Absolutely amazing food and wonderful staff. Be prepared to wait in line at busy times.
Crystal Wolfe
Really amazing food, and has vegan options for almost EVERYTHING on their menu. The waitress was really busy, but still managed to stay completely calm, and keep everyone's drinks filled, take orders in a timely manner, and bring food out hot! I was extremely impressed with her! Bill was a lot cheaper than what I was expecting, we got the same type of stuff you'd get at Denny's, and it was $10-$15 cheaper than Denny's for 2 people. We will be back!!!
Nicole Krings
I love this place. Good morning healing earth plate with curried tofu and corn tortillas with a side of hash browns and side of garlic kale- definitely the way to go. I very much appreciate the consistency of the food. It comes out as the same delicious plate of food every time! The staff is so sweet. I’m glad to have Modern Times in my neighborhood. Only change I’d love to see is that you stay open until 8-9pm 😉
Meghan McAndrews
It can be difficult to find places that my meat-and-potatoes loving husband and veggie-loving me can agree on, especially for breakfast or brunch. Modern Times has something for us both, from Croque Monsieur and fries (him) to the Good Morning Healing Earth with tofu (me). I love checking out their coffee specials too as they are often (always?) delish. Don't sleep on their jam either, idk what it is, but it's not to be missed.
Jeff E
Little different check-in then I am used to, but it works for them. First time here and I have to say I really liked it. Service was good a d the roasted jalapeño burger was fantastic.
Aaron Berg
Fantastic small dinner with unique offerings. They were able to cater to any dietary needs with really great vegan and vegetarian options. There will probably be a short wait for a table but they have a large waiting room with peace coffee.
Madisen Hyatt
Love this place for breakfast! They have great vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore selections; great for the whole crew! Have been going there for years! Staff are very eclectic so if that's not your thing you may not enjoy the atmosphere. Have waits on the weekend so be prepared for that, kind of a small-ish space. Serving staff don't stop by the table often which is fine if you never need something. Overall great spot for brunch, hangover cure, etc!
Y ManCas
The atmosphere is very chill, servers are very nice and the food is amazing! I LOVE that they use ingredients from local farms and free range eggs. There is an option for everyone but they focus on vegetarian and vegan food. Which is hard to find in other restaurants.
Nancy Barry
Stopped here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Food was FANTASTIC, coffee was great, and our server was very friendly and helpful.
Lara Hammer
Everything is perfect here. Art, food, service, amazing. Couldn't recommend more. Their menu has everything available as vegan to carnivore, and everything in between. The coffee bar is full service, from press pot to lattes, all the flavors. The food is made from scratch and organic, but is affordable and the portions are hearty, delicious, and healthy. They know how to make veggies taste good. There are kids toys (a friend and I had brunch, brought our two three year olds, and they were happily playing magna tiles together and coloring until food came.) Get there early to get a table, otherwise be prepared to wait. It's a popular neighborhood spot.
Michelle Carlson
Every foodie should eat here! Wonderful unusual tea and coffee options. The chicken tortilla soup was the best I’ve ever had.
JJ Jackson
Menu nice, service really good, food was good wish they would have checked in after dropping off, burger was a little to pink in half of it, for ordering well done. Great flavors on the bowl and burger with combos mixed together.
Jaime Scharffbillig
This is my first time trying Modern Times and I’ve wanted to for awhile. It was definitely worth the wait! I tried making tempeh before and it didn’t turn out good so it turned me off of it but have there tempeh burger turned me into a lover of it! Also the garlic fries are amazing as well. Plus coffee so good you don’t need creamer which is what I look for in my coffee. Next time I’m going to try other stuff on the menu and bring my partner!
Bill
Very good food, great menu with choices for everyone. Excellent coffee. There sour dough and rye bread are super tasty, I'm going to guess there other breads are also good but those are the only two I every order.
Everything they sell is of the highest quality, most of it being locally sourced. I also enjoy the great people watching here. This is the go to place for kids to bring their parents to show them they are eating well!
MICHELE PUFAHL
My first time at Modern Times was on a busy Sunday. They take care of their patrons who have to wait by providing a cozy nook with coffee you can help yourself to while you wait. The wait was well worth it since the food was delicious. Not your typical Sunday brunch fare. Delicious options for vegans, vegetarians, carnivores and everything in between.
Nathan Lucero
This place was recommended to me by a friend, The food and coffee was delicious. Lots of Veg and Vegan options. The waitresses were very attentive and the food came pretty quick. I had the burrito special, and the ingredients were really fresh. The sauce was good too.
One thing I should note: I absentmindedly left the key to my bike lock at home, so I couldn't lock my bike outside to go in and eat. The staff was very kind to let me sit at one of the tables outside so I could keep an eye on my unlocked bike. I really appreciate that. I was very hungry and was worried that I might not be able to eat while keeping my bike secure. Thank you!
Caycee Bregel
Great vegan options. It can be hard to find vegan breakfast, but this cafe is very inclusive. I had the southside hash as a recommendation from the server, and it was beyond good. I would definitely be back just for that, but the service was great and everything was prepared quickly. Highly recommend!
Maggie Hill-Kipling
Always love food from here. Vegan, vegetarian, meaty, and gluten free options are all important in our family! And now, in the Age of Rona, we are so grateful to be able to pick up food in such a covid-safe manner. Appreciate all they do! ❤️❤️❤️
Anil Maddimsetti
Been here for breakfast, had a little wait but it was worth it. You get to have coffee while you wait, so the time passes quick.
The people are friendly and the food is really nice, their multi grain bread toast and hash-browns are a must try, the coffee also has a unique flavor.
Be prepared for a 15-20 min wait and you will enjoy your weekend breakfast
Jordan Hogness
I have been extremely pleased every time I have come here. Portions are generous and prices seem about right. The food has always been delicious and creative. I typically go with the special. Though I am a carnist and order meat in one fashion or another, they have a wide variety of vegan options. I have always ever been on weekend mornings — be aware that at such times you will generally face a not insubstantial wait.
Aaron Meyerowitz
Delicious and healthy choices. Great for vegans and carnivores. Most vegan donuts and muffins are so-so but theirs were great.
Spectra Myers
I'm a lifelong vegetarian and I've never had kale so good. I ordered the eggs, biscuits and gravy w/ kale and it was all incredible. To go system worked well. Will order again soon!
Logan Elizabeth
Love how many veggie & vegan options their are, and how easy it is to make something on the menu vegan. Delicious food; and the outdoor patio is spacious enough to feel comfortable.
Angi Stevens
Great vegan options, great food, great service! More vegan donuts though please! 🍩🍩🍩 …
Gradylee Shapiro- Zimmer
This is my favorite breakfast spot in the Twin Cities. If I could, I would eat here every day. I used to only order the Beet Up but have expanded my reach to include other delights such as the South Side Hash. If you happen in during lunch time don’t dismay, the burger and garlicky fries are totally worth it. I feel great about spending my money here and even when the wait is long the staff and kind and accommodating and there is delicious coffee!!
BeesBulletsAndRecycling CanEyeVent
Eye am a happy regular here. They REALLY made my day when eye made my online order just to realize eye needed to pick up my clothing from my tailors. Eye went into panic mode almost immediately, calling them 5 times. No answer. Eye desperately didn't want to pick up a cold, dry vegan biscuit & gravey breakfast. So eye sent an email not knowing what else to do. They wrote me back, told me no problem and had my food made FRESH an hour AFTER eye ordered it. LOVE THEM!
Thomas Frakes
Love this spot! Every item on this inclusive menu is worth trying. Fresh inputs and a hip edge make the brunch menu more than just comfort food. The specials are consistently awesome. Staff & atmosphere are wonderful and one of a kind. Leave feeling healthy, happy and satiated every time. Great neighborhood asset.
Sam
Food was good but unlikely to be back. They offer food made with great local, organic, or even vegan (if that's your thing) ingredients but the service, atmosphere, and care of the building are so/so. Walking in the place was dingy, seemed dirty and run down, and just overall was not a place it felt worth being in (with some less than family friendly art on the walls too), our waitress was rude and not around much, and overall just not a place I want to return to. Wish the food was at a better place.
Kyle Caldwell
Amazing food! Just stopped in and had a California Burger... it was amazing, I would recommend!
Rachel Sporer
One of my favorite places to eat breakfast in Minneapolis! I have tried something different every time and been so pleased. The Cabbie sandwich is one of the best breakfast sandwiches. The vegan and vegetarian options are delicious and abundant. The food is so high quality and satisfying.
Brad Enderle
Fantastic vegan breakfast, tons of flavor and local restaurant that treats employees well. Great service, food, experience.
River Newell-Cline
Amazingly delicious and made with love. Options for all diets so super easy for a group of people with different eating styles to get together. Great vibe, one of my new favorite spots. And if you dont love the xeroxed menus you aren't punk enough.
Mason
Best fresh donuts in town. Honestly everything they make here is sublime. I recommend the Deadwood wrap with a chai tea. Very COVID safe. Love what this place represents for South Minneapolis.
Shaleen Meyer
One of my favorite breakfast places ever. Lots of awesome choices, but what stands out is the unique vegetarian options. Many items can be requested vegan or vegetarian, but you can sub tofu or tvp etc., instead of just leaving out meat.
Jamie Schwesnedl
A colorful, cozy neighborhood spot with fantastic food and awesome staff. Great Mexican-influenced diner menu with lots of organic and local ingredients and plenty of options for vegans, meat eaters, gluten free, etc. Best burgers around, and usually some cool art on the walls. My all-time favorite restaurant.
Jack Moore
The food is absolutely incredible. Immaculate vibes inside with super unique art. And the employees are fantastic as well!
Maddy Newman
the Jonathan Richman sandwich is to die for! The service is always great and the food is consistently awesome! We’ve never had to wait more than 20 minutes for a table, and it’s worth the wait. Didn’t get out of bed before 12? That’s okay! They have breakfast options available until they close!
Perfect for my egg-loving partner and vegans, like myself.
James Biehl
"Post-Modern Times" seems more like it!
But really the food isn't so - just the vibe. But Hey, Nothing is original in the world, anyways... C'est la vie...
Nathan Sterner
Modern Times is excellent! Food is delicious and I love all the vegetarian and vegan options. I went here for the first time this week, went back again a couple days later, and heading there today for lunch.
NewbieBagel Face
I found a long silver blond hair in my bacon. I order a take out breakfast. The pancake is really good. During 1 pm i order California with fries. I kinda dislike the fries. I like my fries crunchy soft not hard and most part burnt.
Bennie Rosas
Amazing little gem with high quality food for all diets. The garlic kale side dish was top notch. I could eat that all day. The poached eggs atop my seasonal croque madame were the most perfectly poached eggs I've ever encountered, and I used to be a breakfast cook.
Bret Asmussen
Awesome food. Everything always tastes very fresh. We order from here for our whole office orders quite often because everyone seems to find something on the menu they can eat and everyone raves about what the get.
Chelsea Kaminski
Soooo much yes. The whole vibe the atmosphere was so lovely. The staff so friendly and seemed so happy to serve you. I got the chai pancake special yum it was so good. Not to mention all the options vegan gluten free carnivore. Yum 💕 glad we chose to stop. …
Greg Wilson
Awesome vegan and vegetarian dishes. Their sourdough is great and the vegan doughnuts are some of the best I've had. Super light and fluffy.
Catherine Menzel
Tons of tasty healthy meal options. Pretty grungy- but I like that.
Brook Anderson
Modern times is a great place to grab coffee or a meal! Such a nice staff and great meals to boot! Highly recommend 10/10
Jon Smith
Enjoyed my visit. Eclectic best describes it for me.
Megan Wika
You may have to wait a bit for weekend brunch during the winter, but this is my all time favorite brunch spot. The food is unbelievably good. I would eat the wild rice pancakes every day if I could. The service is no frills but prompt and friendly. I go here every chance I get
Matthew Galloway
Incredibly delicious, healthy, and unique breakfast and lunch food! I love all the dishes with roasted beets and tahini. You might need to wait if you arrive after 1030am on a Saturday or Sunday, but the friendly staff will bring you coffee and menus while you wait on the bench outside.
Scott Tobias
Incredible place. Incredibly friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious and almost everything on the menu can be veganised. I got the biscuits and gravy which was sooo good. Nice large portion as well so I have some for my lunch today as well.
Shelly Tregillis
Menu has something for everybody, whether vegetarian, vegan or carnivore. Staff is relaxed and friendly. They forgot my companion's food order so he ended up having to wait after my food arrived. That was annoying, and it would have been nice, since they screwed up, if they would have at least offered some kind of discount. They didn't seem too concerned about it.
Emi Lyman
Hands down the best breakfast in the Twin Cities! Everything I've ever ordered has been fantastic. Even when it's busy they get you seated fairly quickly. Great vegan, vegetarian and meaty options.
Frank Ruiz
My Air B&B host recommended this place as "the best breakfast spot in town" and all I can say is that it was EXCELLENT!!! I'm not sure if the best in town because I only spent a couple of days in Minneapolis but it sure was very good. Breakfast plates are big portions and coffee is good, unlimited refills, the servers are really nice and attentive. If you go when it's got be prepared to break a sweat since the place has only one window a/c unit and it doesn't feel like it works well. To me it wasn't a big deal because the food was so good. Not expensive at all. Breakfast and coffee for about $9
Nickia Jensen
Amazing food! So flavorful and great vegan options! Though the weekend mornings are really busy with long wait sometimes, it's totally worth it. Polenta Rancheros, Migas, and garlic kale my favorite menu options.
CUP
I love going to Modern Times. They have great vegan and vegetarian options. The coffee is inexpensive and the waiters are always super great. Sometimes this place is busy but I guess that makes sense because its super delicious.
kenzie black
Not long of a wait to be seated, the staff were all awesome the food was delicious. Price points very reasonable for the amount of food and with tip came to just about 30$
Anja Sodin
Awesome as usual. All beef is grass fed. Veggies are organic..I think! Gluten free bread is high quality teff type bread. Atmosphere is comfy and welcoming. My favorite breakfast is roast turkey (side) and 2 sunny side up eggs.
Scott
Great food, servers were pretty cool. They should check their dishwasher because all the silverware seemed like it wasn’t getting clean. The host must have hated her life. In all my years in restaurants, I’ve only run into a handful of people that seemed so disgruntled and negative. She might want to try exercise, meditation or finding a new career.
Jordan Thomas
A nice variety of vegetarian and vegan brunch options. The vegan French toast I had today was delicious. Don't expect a quick bite though. I'd say the line for a table averages about 45 minutes on the weekend.
Kiersten Carlson
This is the best place. If you haven't been here, go. Best staff in town. Food is delicious and consistent. They cater to all different dietary restrictions, everyone in your party will be happy with their meal, no question.
daniel kessler
Really love this place, from the run down decor with exposed wiring to the amazing coffee. They don't give a damn about the way the place looks (although it is clean), they just care about putting out great food. Many vegetarian and vegan options.
Jeremy Kelley
I was told to try this place by a friend while i visited Minneapolis. The food did not let me down. An eclectic original menu with great vegan and vegetarian options. However i was let down by the attitude of a couple of the staff. I expressed how pleased i was with the sandwich i ordered and how good the "mayonnaise" was on my Vegan sandwich and asked if she knew how they made the in-house mayo. I thought I tasted a hint of butter and also wanted to make sure there were no eggs in it. 99% of the time I'm completely wrong but i wanted to nonchalantly ask anyway to ease my mind. My waitresses response was "I dont know Im not the cook" and walked off. That in my many responses to "thank you" as they served me different items as i had lunch was just being ignored. So if you are coming in for the food then you will not be disappointed. If you are looking for good and enjoyable service then try somewhere else.
Jesse Carroll
Great place for a vegetarian or even vegan breakfast. It's nice to have so many options. On weekday mornings if you get there soon after they open it's almost never crowded, so it makes for a nice chill breakfast.
Jillian Stearns
There's so many options to include all types of dietary restrictions, I would be surprised if someone couldn't find something for themselves. The staff is so great to talk to even when it gets super busy on a Saturday morning :) they're set up for to go ordering is great too!
Courtney Alexander
Really cool cafe. I liked that there were decent options for vegan, vegetarian, and carnivore dietary preferences, where often places will offer only one thing for one of those categories. The food was tasty and relatively quick. It was $12 for a cup of all-you-can-drink coffee, sandwich and a side salad. I would definitely go back.
David T
Increasing Returns!
I started coming to Modern Times several years ago. My visits increase year over year.
Creative short menu
Excellent service and attention
Quality distinctive ingredients
Unique style
I'm a carnivore and my partner is a herbivore. We can always agree on MT
Patrick Murphy
Easily the best restaurant in Minneapolis, and it isn't even close. If running a restaurant was basketball, everyone is playing high school JV, and Modern Times is Hakeem Olajuwan in his prime. Fabulous! Awesome food, great people, amazing community members.
Josh Sayotovich
Fantastic vegetarian and vegan breakfasts. Several dishes have a touch of heat from roasted peppers. Big portions and hearty veggies mean you'll be full for hours.
Anna G
Really rad vegan options here. I got the Hashbrown Rancheros with tofu, so delicious. Plus vegan pancakes?? I'm all about it. It is a little small, so be prepared to wait depending on the time you go. Prices are solid considering the quality of ingredients. Our server was very kind and there when we needed her. Highly recommend if you're looking for some plant based (and not) fare in the TC!
Brett Butler
Another completely underappreciated gem of South Minneapolis. Very reasonable food and coffee prices. If you drop in for lunch you will be impressed by the phenomenal flavors.
Elizabeth Marty
I love this place so much! They have so many vegetarian and vegan options it’s great. The tempeh thai burger is one of my favs ❤️ ; their coffee is excellent as well. Also I love the vintage feel to the decor in the inside.
Kari
Was looking for something within walking distance to our rental and found this gem. Wasn't sure when I read the menu if it was really my cup of tea. My breakfast was heavenly! Roasted veggies, eggs and cheese. (Chakra Khan it's named, I think) If I'm ever back in Minneapolis I will go out of my way to visit again. Service was great, food was fresh and delicious, the atmosphere has a lot of character. It's not a cheap meal, but hearty and worth every penny.
John Smet
The breakfast burrito was incredible, and my girlfriend won't stop talking about how good the huevos verde was. Got there right at open and got our food quickly, but the place filled up fast. Servings were huge. Will definitely stop back next time I'm in town.
Patrick Kelly
I went here on a Tuesday morning (3/8/16) and had a whole Hashbrown Ranchero with eggs and chorizo. Delicious! Everything was very good and one server (perfectly attentive) capably handled the whole room. Maybe half full. This place can get very crowded but I think it's worth the wait.
The sausage patty is Italian, not breakfast sausage. It's quite good, just not what I was expecting.
PJ Farrell
Great for dietary requirements from carnivore to vegan to gluten-free. This is where neighborhood eats so don't expect the fancy to be brought out. This is just plain old good cooking with interesting and simple twists at fair prices. Service is always excellent.
Patrick Fuentes
This place makes me want to be a better person.
It has all of the authenticity that Hard Times used to have.
The food is real, honest, well-sourced; and it's basically free compared to other restaurants that are this well thought out.
Every time I go here, I think I'm being aspirational; and I leave totally satisfied.
The service is so-so, but it's not that kind of place. This is a place that you go to be a part of something bigger.
Kevin Riste
This is the best vegan food I've had in the entire Twin Cities. We had the Johnathan Richman (veggie sausage breakfast sandwich) and the Yucca Sofritas (a special similar to huevos rancheros). The Yucca was great, and the Johnathan Richman is the best vegan meal I've ever had. It was crunchy, savory, incredibly well seasoned, and the hash browns we ordered as a side were perfect. I will be coming back here many times, and so should you.
Chris Huff-Hanson
Funky, avant South Minneapolis diner. They just keep getting better. The menu is traditional diner fare fused with healthy local organic/Mexican. The specials are inspired and worth the extra price. Great kids menu coloring project.
Jbombjr 421
I ordered vegan pancakes it took a while for them to come out and the waitresses all seem like they are in a terrible mood it also took a very long time for our food to come out. The hot Apple cider is very good and the pancakes were awesome
Thomas E. Johnson
Always have had excellent food here but have never had great customer service. It's usually not a huge deal, for example not getting refills on coffee or something. But today my party of 3 had JUST finished our meals and had paid our tab -- just sitting and conversing with some friends I hadn't seen in awhile -- and we were asked to leave so someone else could have the table. I mean, maybe if we had been there for a half hour after paying, but it was really rude because I had just paid the tab and our conversation was interrupted just to tell us to leave. Not impressed.
Stephanie Spanish Gonzales
My partner is pretty plain as far as food goes. It was their first time and they didn't want to order anything. They offered to make something not on the menu and they loved it! It made me happy that they where happy.
Joshua Draves-Kellerman
Very delicious, loved the Al Pastor Hash that was on special. Great service as well!
Isabel Fajardo
My favorite brunch spot! Great menu with tons of options for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. Fabulous coffee bar. A little spendy, but the value is well worth it!
Daniel Rice
Always good food, an always friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Small place, but that just makes it cozier. Five ❤️s.
Jim Spindler
I don't have the opportunities to get here as often as I'd like, unfortunately. When I do dine here, though, I am always very pleased with their offerings and service. Nutritious, farm-to-fork, scratch food creatively designed and served up by efficient, friendly, super-conscientious staff. This place helps make Minneapolis a great city and enhances the Powderhorn Park neighborhood.
Nicholas Bruer
Great food, and you can actually trust when they say something is vegan, gluten free, etc. Service is what you would expect from a vegan place at the edge of uptown...there is usually a wait but, usually, it isn't too long. If nothing else they have good coffee and tea while you wait.
BlakLight 88
Food is awesome.I wish they served pancakes and French toast in weekend past 12pm. Nonetheless, garlic kale is my favorite so far. Vegetarian going vegan
Shannon Fern
Amazing place!! The food was incredible and so was the staff, this is my new favorite place to eat.
Alexander Schwartz
The decore is simple and hipster in this cozy cafe off of Chicago Avenue. The menu is resplendent with vegan and vegetarian options. When there we ordered the Yucca Plate which was the special. It was out of this world! The mojo sauce that came with the meal was delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful with menu choices. I would recommend going here for a quick lunch or early dinner.
Veridian
Found this place on a random whim before jaunting to TC. Am I glad for that too! I was excited to see all the menu. It's as if they made a menu for vegans, and substituted in meat products "Carnivore by request". My fiance and I ate here for breakfast.
I ordered the Jonathon Richmond (sandwich), a Pancake w/ wildrice and a Coffee. She had A Pancake w/ ginger cashews, hashbrowns, and in-house seitan. Fantastic all around!!
Michelle McCulley
We ordered 15 meals for our office. The food AMAZING & they made it so easy to order. Everyone I spoke to was so very helpful!! I will definitely be ordering from them again! Delicious!!!!
Anna Simons
I might just need to make a habit of eating here. The lovely servers have always been very kind, and consistent with never allowing me to see the bottom of my coffee cup (guess that's why they call it bottomless😜). And with such a welcoming, chill vibe to the cafe it's wonderful for any occasion. …
Kathryn wagner
First time here, food was fabulous!! So exciting to find restaurants that serves good/well seasoned, healthy vegan food. Hot sauces are awesome too. I will be back for sure.
Drew Belstock
I love breakfast here every time. If there's a wait (there will be) grab some coffee from the waiting area in the back. Vegan, vegi and meat dishes are equally emphasized.
Jamie Potter
The food and coffee are excellent here, really great options for vegan and GF!!
Justin Gastreich
Very awesome vegan breakfast. We tried the south side hash with tvp chorizo and curried tofu. Wow!! Hashbrowns were perfect and everything else was bomb. Coffee was great too.
Ashley Annett
One of my favorite breakfast spots. Both myself as a vegetarian and my boyfriend, a meat-eater, love it.
Cory Jackson
You can't explain this place--it must be experienced. My wife and I were just started to explore the vegan lifestyle and we found this for breakfast. I've never tasted blends of spices and vegetables like this! Can't wait to go back again.
Emily Utne
Best place for vegan breakfast! My fav is the Evergreen with lots of garlicky kale! Everything here is delicious! Quality ingredients and flavorful and the best atmosphere! ❤❤❤
Anne Maurer
So good! Great selection of food and it was quality. The staff were also very friendly. Met a couple here who travels around the world and upon return this was their first stop, speaking volumes. !
Melanie Hallstein
Wow! Amazing service, great food, great prices, and a fun, welcoming environment. Thanks for all the vegan options! You guys rock and I will definitely be back!
Malia Lakatos
My favorite place on mpls for vegan brunch! They have options for everyone and I have never been disappointed. Can be a long wait on weekends but it is definitely worth it!
jude g
PMany great vegetarian options and delicious, gluten free available. Nice selection of foods, like breakfast for lunch, salads, sandwiches, burgers. No frills atmosphere, but cute in its own way.
Alicia Doberstein
A true no-frill gem located in South Minneapolis teeming with both classic and creative dishes using ingredients your body needs. They don’t serve libations, but that doesn’t even matter. Everything I have ordered from here is top. Can not recommend enough.
Paul Busch
I almost feel badd about saying how great this place is, since I know millions of other people Have probably said the same thing. It's got a great South Minneapolis Down-to-Earth hippie vibe, with fantastic and creative food. If it's not Hip, then nobody should care about hip.
lizzy hallas
Interesting, wholesome meals and a cute little vibe
Daniel Josefchak
Delicious breakfast and amazing coffee at a cool location. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.
Tyghe Vallard
The food was great. It was so flavorful and balanced. I had one of the hashes which usually end up being overpowered by the taste of cheese, but not here. You get a great mixture of delight.
Zachary Smith
Definitely coming back; quite the deal.
The Cabbie is a great combo of spicy and creamy, and the satin has a nice smoky flavor like sausage.
The fried tofu on the Jonathan Richman is extra crispy.
Bridget Jordan
Hash brown rancheros are amazing. Staff is vigilant about dietary needs. On weekends get there right at 9 to get a table! Don't linger and be ready to order, there is usually a wait.
Papyrus Apollo
My food and the service were ok. It's a place that's very easily crowded. It has a very mixed aesthetic; The outside is very Yuppie the soon as you get inside you realize how Punk it is. The reason why I give it 4 stars it's because of how cramped it is, though.
Bobby King
Great locally grown food in a laid back environment. Excellent hamburgers. Great service. You should like or not be bothered by tattoos and nose rings.
David Lickness
Walked in sat right down ordered and enjoyed a tasty meal oh by way they have wounderful coffee yum!
Ryan Petrie
Great place within the neighborhood to hang out with excellent coffee and food. The wait area is nice with self service coffee and water. The staff is great and friendly. Highly recommended
Kellen Bongartz
Great food! Vegan friendly! Meat friendly!
Lanie Hei
Very decent greasy spoon restaurant and friendly waitstaff. The prices were the same as a place not in that category, though. I also have a pet peeve with those plastic cups..it reminds me of a dining hall. My boyfriend felt the portion size was a bit small for his meal; he got the croquet, but it was only one half of the sandwich.
Kaela Rustad
This is the best place for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Everything is amazing and they can accommodate any dietary restrictions.
Kayla Mason
Best vegan breakfast ever!! They do all kinds of food though (meat, vegetarian, vegan), so it's a great place to go with anyone!
b. Satchell
That's a very tasty vegan burrito. I highly suggest the deadwood. Really love the COVID precautions they have taken. Thanks for being rad, safe, and tasty!
Tyler Brewton
So many great options. Great service.
Laura S.

Cindy Ivy
They offer so many vegan options and their vegan donuts are amazing!
joseph maher
Always love coming here. Great food, amazing vegan options and a laid back, welcoming atmosphere. Thank you!
Kelsey Stern
A very welcoming atmosphere, great service, and amazing food and coffee. It's a little bit of a wait, especially on the weekends, but they have a side room to wait in, which is nice.
Maddie Segal
Sooo many awesome vegan options! And very pleasant waitstaff! Looks crappy outside but you should definitely walk in the door.
Santiago g
Love it!, their menu is simple but yet full of variety, you do not need to be vegetarian to go there, they have an option for everything. I you are visiting town this would be an experience for you.
Harnam Chana
Our favorite go to brunch place. Lots of vegetarian options. Food is amazing especially when you add their house sauce.
Ebbin Martin
Amazing as always. I had a half order of South side hash and a bacon pancake and both were great. Good strong coffee also
Danny Beyrer
Brunch options for everyone. Most of our group ordered some variation of the "Good Morning Healing Earth" and loved it. Very relaxed atmosphere.
David Blake
Excellent food and coffee. A chill crowd, and the music is loud. I hesitate to say it's family friendly, so maybe bring children at your own risk.
Will
A bit rundown, but food is amazing, and tons of vegan stuff. It is all at least vegetarian too, so don’t go here expecting bacon or sausage.
Ricky DeMello
Delicious food sold at a reasonable price but busy place that only accepts walk-ins so go in smaller groups of 2 to 4. Pictured is a Croque Madame that was definitely worth the half an hour wait and the $15.
Claudia Jennings
Always delicious food. Great for something stick to your gut greasy or something lighter like rice and veg with a great sauce. Usually lots of nearby free parking.
Hailey Foeller

Gail B
Really nice, staff is very hard working, food is overall good. Personally not a fan of the hash browns... A bit overdone for me.
Ben Bowe
Cool place. Very interesting. Came here for breakfast it was really good except my tortillas were put in the slaw juice so they were all soggy nothing good about a soggy slaw tortilla
Alex Dexheimer
Great place for vegan brunch options. Reasonably priced and a nice atmosphere. Coffee isn't bad either.
Austin Wells
Bell was broken on the door so it took waitress a long time to come out and seat us. Food was a but pricey for what you get. Was tasty though.
Mohamad Khouli
Delicious food, great selection, and very friendly staff!
josh king
Good food. Funky is a great way to sum this place up... I like to bring my square brethren here to help open their minds about food and people... Gotta love powderhorn

They have a space on the menu that details where all their food comes from, in case you were interested. Their tea is really yummy too.
Lloyd Hilsgen
Always good food, with almost every item having a vegan/vegetarian option
Myriah Jo Hansen
The food was amazing but the service was slow, the line was long (they have a waiting room so it was fine), and the bathrooms were dirty. I would come back for the food but no other reason.
Nick Coughlin
Good breakfast options for vegans. I'd give another star if they provided Silk creamer for coffee!
