Cash-only dive bar that serves the Juicy Lucy, stuffed burger with cheese inside. Pictures of well-known visits by popular figures are found on the wall. The service was fast, friendly and attentive. As a first timer, I thought the cheese was a bit runny/ watery? Otherwise it was a fairly cool lunch experience for me.

Got there around 7:30 pm on Sunday night, it was about a 5 minute wait for a party of 5. We all ordered Jucy Lucy’s, 3 orders of fries and 2 beers (Castle Danger Cream Ale and Grain Belt Premium). The Juicy Lucy was one of the best in Minneapolis (had 5-8 Club, Crooked Pint, Nooks and Blue Door) because the grilled onion, pickles and cheese inside just all worked together really well!

Still has popular as ever. From arriving (line was to the interior door) to table was about 10 min, and this was around 2pm on Friday. The 1 sever was rocking the whole section like a true professional. Food took about 20-25min but the place was busy. Matt’s didn’t disappoint and the burgers were worth the wait, perfectly cooked with that sexy seasoning and cold beer.

Jucy Lucy was good... but not somewhere I'd visit during subsequent trips to the Twin Cities, as it fell short of my expectations given it's notoriety. Had a Dive Bar atmosphere but friendly staff made the visit enjoyable. Our waitress (I think Claire?) was the best part. Also - skip the fries... there are a ton in an order, but they weren't very good.

Best Juicy Lucy in all the land. They have a very small food menu and they are experts at everything on it. Their Juicy Lucy is always well cooked with juices and flavors locked inside. The bar is small so there can be a wait to get a table. Worth it. Their pop is served in cans which is unique. Very friendly wait staff.

We had the pleasure of being served by the same waitress Renee! She remembered my wife & I and that made us feel invited & welcomed! We even bought Shirts for our entire family company in support of this family friendly iconic gem! The Juicy Lucy is something worth traveling the globe for! We definitely will be flying back for another visit! Our family would love to add Matt’s Bar & Grill to the list of iconic family friendly establishments we support with our Free Custom Tables! No matter the case, this place has our families support & promotion for life!!

The "Juicy Lucy" is the main attraction at Matt's: a burger with cheese 'baked' in-between two beef patties. The meat was well seasoned and the cheese oozes out of the meat as soon as you take your first bite. If you are a burger purist and no frills meat cheese and a bun are your thing, the Juicy Lucy might be right up your palette. I did like this burger, but I need the crunch of lettuce and pickles, onions fighting for their right to include their soury and tart flavor, sweet tomatoes that are juicy in their own right. When I bite into a burger, I need the crunch and cool, the ballet of ingredients dancing on my palette working together to satisfy the soul, not just soft and juicy meat. Matt's burgers are a reminder of what good burgers were, but like everything else in this world, burgers got an upgrade--one that Juicy Lucy missed.

Finally we were able to visit one of the iconic places of the city here in Minneapolis and see why it's very famous."Juicy Lucy" is delicious very good and not expensive. It's very crowded but it is worth the wait. Great service. Don't forget to bring cash!!

Took a big bite only to find that the burger didn't like that very much and spit at me in a delicious cheesy fashion. Would I have it again? YES. Will I make the same mistake of taking a huge bite? This is a great place for even better food. The service is quick, the place feels very family like, and cozy. First time ever, no line to sit down. Small simple menu. Top 3 places in Minneapolis hands down. Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, the lack of being able to pay with a card, which severely limits the times I go and visit to about 2-3 times a year instead of 12-15 times.

SO GOOD. We are from out of town and had to come back a second time in one weekend before we left. The Juicy Lucy’s are a DELICACY so amazing tasting and do not leave you feeling greasy or bad, whole fam felt good and healthy after, not the usual feeling after eating a burger, especially one that has cheese oozing out!! So delicious and the staff was SO KIND ! Going to come back every time we’re in MN. On the weekend it was a tad busy but it is very worth it to wait. Highly recommend.

I went for the Classic Juicy Lucy, and was very good. Things that can be improve are that they only accept Cash, no ice on the drink, no plates, etc. I get the concept of minimalism but in a business I dont think is a good idea. But the Burger was delicious.

Man, this was a great lunch. There was about a 5-10 minute wait when we got there which was nothing because later in the week we drove by and the line wrapped outside! Service was great. Food was delish! It’s cash only. Get the onions on your burger for Pete’s sake! Juicy Lucy lover all the way!

AND 🍟 French Fries for the table The “Home of the ‘ORIGINAL’ Jucy Lucy” — I am not making any statements, just quotin’ here (In case we have any 5-8 Club advocates, which is the other establishment claiming the fame of the original stuffed patty🤔). You could argue all day over who came first; I prefer to just enjoy it. But not too soon!!! Or the cheese will burn ya 🔥😄 Despite a first-bite dairy-scare, this was some great ground beef. Smaller than I expected… but when you claim to have invented such a renowned phenomena of flavor, you don’t touch that recipe. And you won’t complain when cheese starts leaking out. ALL OVER. It was the compact, rich, cheesy burger bomb of local legend that Matt’s promises all foodies who seek to sneak their burger’s cheese out of sight 😁 The fries were fantastic as well! Thin, crispy, and hotter than a car door in the Minnesota summer sun—certainly enough for 2-3 💯 Matt’s is cozy and an absolute classic, but also first-come first-savor; its no ballroom. I’d suggest heading over right before 5pm, which was perfect timing on the Friday we went. Well worth it to stop by for the “Original!”

The place smelled like a dirty bathroom (even though the restrooms were in the basement) which made it challenging to enjoy the ambiance and food. Service was just meh... Took a bit for our waitress to notice us, after seating us, then walking by us 2-3 times. Warm tap water (guess you had to ask for ice?), coke in a can, a juice glass of wine yet the beer was a cold pint! The Juicy Lucy burger with onions & pickles was very good. Fries were just meh. I can say I was there. Would not go out of my way to go again.

A tiny "cash only" establishment. I went there just for the Juicy Lucy burger. And it was awesome. I was there on a Saturday night..line up at the door. Be proud to wait for your food. It is served fresh and super hot. Make sure you get the basket of fries and start with that first cause the cheese in the juicy Lucy is super hot.

Fantastic place. Small town bar with great food! Juicy Lucys are an experience to be had!!! Word of warning, the cheese in the burger is HOT! The trick is to bite a small hole on top and let the cheese drain out if necessary. Also, another couple of important notes: Lines form right at open and the place is cash only.

Visiting and wanted to try the famous Jucy Lucy and oh boy did that make me wet... I mean first bite in and the Juce started oozing down my fingers I had to quickly slurp it up to prevent it from drizzling down my shirt... It's definitely one of the juiciest and most luscious burger I've ever had in my life and I'm one satisfied customer! ;)

For how packed it was we were seated relatively quickly, which was nice. Their Juicy Lucys are on point--topped with only pickles and sautéed onions, and oh so good. Their shoestring fries are also delicious. I'm not sure what they do to their onions, whether they add some sort of seasoning or if it's simply the natural seasoning imparted on them by the grill, but they have a bit of a French onion-y kind of flavor. The menu is short and to the point, prices include tax. Just a heads up, they only accept cash or local checks as payment, no credit/debit cards.

Cash only restaurant. Came here for the Jucy Lucy burger and didn’t expect much but omg the burgers were amazing and perfectly portioned tho burn ur mouth if u are not careful. The fries were delicious but a little too much lol We had Iron Horse root beer with it. I hate root beer but this one was actually good! Highly recommend

Nice little cozy hole in the wall with good burgers and fries. The staff was very friendly and I chatted with them a bit. Much better than going downtown (Hells Kitchen) and paying an outrageous price for a not so good copycat burger and getting a snobby attitude. Will definitely be back when in town.

Juicy Lucy, was thinking of a 🍔. Decided I should make a run. As usual Matt's quiet one minute and busy the next. The cook was handling the grill. Something like 30 burgers 🍔 at a time. BB on the screens and every one just relaxing. 15 minutes there and 16 minutes back. Sat at the bar waiting. Those servers were pleasant and working hard. Thanks ladies!!!

CASH ONLY, the do have an ATM inside the restaurant. Jucy Lucy was tasty as can be. Their French fries are to die for! The full order of fries is enough for 2-3 people. Prices are fair.

I feel this place is a piece of food history. Totally legit!!! We have reading about the original Jucy Lucy for years, and this experience was just what we wanted and expected. Small dive bar that can pump out some food. It was a busy Saturday, and felt they could have used another staff member or two for efficiency. Otherwise, I'm glad I don't live closer or would weight 400 lbs.

I'd never had a Juicy Lucy, but baby was it juicy! I was expecting the burger itself to be super greasy, but it wasn't at all, just stuffed with cheesy gooey goodness. Fries are shoestring, not too salted, and best when eaten hot!

First time in Minneapolis and found this spot by the reviews. Matts did NOT disappoint! The line was out the door when we pulled up and we waited in line behind 4 parties but 10 mins maybe. The service was SUPER fast, courteous, and welcoming. The food was nothing short of the best Jucy Lucy I’ve ever had! This place has awards dripping from the walls for a reason! 🏆🏆🏆🏆

With a little wait time around 5pm on Sunday, since I am doing dine in, it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Good portion of burger size, the cheese just melt right into your mouth; their French fries just like the McDonald’s, but highly recommend getting a full size if you are planning to share, as for reference, one full size of fries can fed between 2- 3 people. For the beer lover, they also offer drafts options as well. I can see why even Obama and Dave chappelle came for their famous jucy Lucy. But just remember, they only accept CASH(and they do have an atm inside).

My son and I visited Matt's Bar and had a classic Jucy Lucy. WOW! Loved it. Best one I've had ever. Watched the cook cranking out Jucy Lucys on a tiny grill like they've done for decades. The burger was perfect; normally I add ketchup to burgers but this didn't need anything. Expect a little bit of a wait because it's always busy and they cook to order.

We came for the juicy Lucy. What’s a “juicy Lucy”? It’s two thinly smashed burgers with cheese, onions, and pickles prepped on a grill and put in a hamburger bun. It was great. On the expensive side, but we were visiting from out of state. The place is small and understaffed so plan on waiting. It's worth it.

Use your phone to access the menu and pay at the bar. Not a ton of seating so our midweek early dinner got us in before the rush. Free street parking! It's an iconic place to hit up and test out what has been a historical treasure and local feud!

My family and I were there because we wanted to try out their famous Jucy Lucy burgers, however, they were not as tasty as I thought they'd be. Nothing special. The full order of fries was enough for us (2 adult, one teenager and 2 kids). The place was packed and there was like a 25 minute wait for a table, then another 15 minutes before the nice and proactive waitress came to take our order. She was the only one working, yet was patient and had a smile on her face!

Maybe I was hungry but the Jucy Lucy lives up to the hype! Went on a Friday afternoon and the place was packed but I was able to quickly get a seat at the bar. I suggest keeping onions on as they add another layer to the overall flavor. I ordered a half order of fries but it was WAY too much for one person. A Minneapolis institution that I must eat at every time I visit the twin cities. Sometimes there's a big line, sometimes there isn't but either way it's worth it. If you aren't ordering the jucy lucy I'm not sure why you're here. It's cash only but there is an atm inside and down the street at the gas station. Just don't bite into your jucy lucy right away or you'll regret it!

Matt’s is a cool dive bar experience, especially after a Vikings game. The Juicy Lucy burger was pretty good, and the full fries portion was big enough for two people. The fries were our favorite part of the meal, but everything was a la carte. The bar is cash or local check ONLY! This almost made us skip the experience. Worth going at least once, in my opinion.

Awesome burger, perfectly crafted. It took about an hour and 20 minutes total to get a seat and get our food, as they were super busy. But it is for good reason. And they have someone cooking constantly, like it's non-stop burgers. They just are too busy because everyone wants the Jucy Lucy.

We just barely squeezed it in our schedule, but I'm glad we did. Someone needs to bring this magic to Oregon. Ordered a Fulton Lonely Blonde on tap, excellent beer. Enjoyed the vibe of Matt's. Doesn't come off as a tourist spot yet has a unique spirit that has attracted many. Cash only, as so many great burger joints are. The Jucy Lucy is incredible. How they get the cheese so liquidy without burning you is amazing. Grilled onions and pickles are all that adorn the Jucy Lucy, but that helps the cheese be the star of the show. It's definitely a juicy burger, greasy meaty and cheesy. Overall, it kinda comes off like a McDonald's cheeseburger that had its meat and cheese transformed by a drunk wizard. Excellent stuff. People sensitive to textures/grease might want to be careful as it's greasy and juicy and it's a lot going on in your mouth. Shoestring fries were tasty, maybe just a hair overcooked. Definitely find your way to Matt's Bar for the original Jucy Lucy.

Went to the 5-8 club, and split a Juicy Lucy with my hubby, then we went to Matt's bar and again ordered a Jucy Lucy. Matt's Bar is hand's down the winner! Better taste, much more flavor and cheese. Huge serving of fries! Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Will be going back again soon! Yummy!

Tagged along with my non-vegan gf and native MN friend. They attest the Juicy Lucy’s are the best. Fries were delicious. Got there right after the lunch rush and that’s probably the best time to go if you want to sit and not wait for a long while to sit. Either way it’s a must stop location if you’re local or from out of town. Staff was friendly and very busy; handling everything from hostessing, taking orders, bussing tables and anything in between. I was pleased with the visit.

Best burger I’ve had to date! Couldn’t wait to dig in, so I didn’t get additional photos (sorry) Fries were cooked perfectly with a nice crisp and not overly greasy. Great tip from a local customer, half basket of fries is plenty to share with the burgers. Dive bar feel and atmosphere. Love the photos on the walls. Still very authentic and tied to its roots while still being very popular. Cash only so be ready. They do have an atm on site. Busy even between typical lunch and dinner hours, so plan accordingly. The staff is incredible, and so positive while dealing with a nonstop rush of people. Truly great humans. No issues with parking on the street and plenty of room parallel parking (based on Chicago standards hahah) Will definitely stop by again if we are in town or passing by!

I had to try Matt's to see if their Juicy Lucy was better than the other guys.... and It definitely was! It had that feeling of age and no frills simplicity that a true original would definitely have! The meat was cooked on a flat top with the perfect charged edges and seasoning. Best jucy Lucy in town. Cash only 💵. You’re entire party should be present before waiting in line. There is often a line, and one server taking care of the entire place, but the burger is worth it! Get the grilled onions and pickle with it and a basket of fries serves 3-4 adults. Bring your patience but it’s totally worth it. Atm on site if needed. Great tap bier selection including Foggy Geezer! Love this place!

I can confidently say that the Juicy Lucy was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. It comes with fried onions and pickles and that’s really all you honestly need. Everything is a la carte but we got an order of fries to share and that was a big enough size that we had some left over. The fries were also amazing and seasoned to perfection. The menu is pretty small and they don’t have condiments like ranch or lemon for drinks but I didn’t really care because what they do have is so amazing. They also sell wine by the bottle which we also got. Really the only reason I didn’t give them 5 stars is because they are a cash only restaurant which is a hassle, it’s almost 2023 come on. But overall I definitely want to come back here.

Nice bar. I found it online as recommended by many people and to try the Jucy Lucy burger. The way they server it was ok but there was no any kind of cheese or melted cheese. Also they accept cash only which was weird for me. But over all was good to have a drink in nice place.

Where's the cheese? We all got the Jucy Lucy and none of us had more than a hint of cheese. For an $11 burger, which is supposed to have an oozing amount of molten cheese, this was a big miss. The tiny, almost thimble sized, paper cup of mayo was a $1. I know prices have gone up for everyone on everything, but this seems unreasonable. That said, the burger was definitely tasty with nice crispy edges and the fries were good. I know some people complain about the service and rudeness here, but they are churning and burning at a crazy rate. Because of it's popularity, you need to plan on eating and running, no lingering with a beer. If you want to cross this off your bucket list, go ahead, but maybe save your money and just get the cheeseburger. Or skip it all together and go someplace with a great burger where you don't have to be rushed. It's akin to waiting in line for an hour to get a coffee at the original Starbuck's, once is definitely enough and maybe not worth it.

Fist time visiting was excited to see what all the hype was about and to see if they really do have the BEST Juicy Lucy. FIRST before you come here just know that it is CASH ONLY! The place is a bit small for the notoriety it has but it’s a “dive bar” so that’s that. Also, they only serve wine and beer, no hard alcohol. Tax included in Menu price. Server was helpful and informative. When it comes down to these Juicy Lucy’s, Matt’s can hold the claim of original lucy’s but when it comes down to the BEST Lucy’s, I would say the 5-8 club is by far the better contender. The onions on the burger were just sooooo similar to White Castle’s sliders it made me think that’s what I was eating. I can say the cheese oozes out beautifully. Burger was overall good. The French fry portion is great to split between two people. When I was paying, I just couldn’t help but notice how the grill looked...🤢...flipping new burgers on top of old onion and burger residue shouldn’t be a thing(maybe if it was more space and a actual kitchen it’d be different). As well as letting people in with NO MASK just their jackets to cover their face definitely made me realize it probably was my first and last time dining here. It’s not all that it’s hyped up to be. I think like a lot of other reviews that a lot of people come here for the nostalgia.

GO HERE. Go here now. You best be reading this review while standing in line at Matt's Bar right this minute. Easily top 5 burger I've ever had. For the prices, probably top 3 ever. Imagine a tiny dive bar. This is it. The epitome of a dive bar but not dirty and grungy. Just small and loud. Expect to wait in line. We went on this past Sunday night (12/29) and waited for about 20 minutes. Normally it is much longer. And do note, it is a standing line only. But as you'll read in countless reviews - it is WELL WORTH THE WAIT. Do yourselves a favor and wait in line for their Jucy Lucy, a basket of fries (half order is plenty for 2 people) and a few beers.

Not a pretty place, but it is a pretty amazing burger! It's an old corner restaurant, but they make a mean burger. It will be a wait while they cook the "Jucy Lucy" but it is worth the wait. The cheese is on the inside of the burger. I've had inside Cheese burgers before but this one was the best. You can get it with onions and I recommend it. They are diced real small so the don't affect the build of the burger but they really add to the flavor. This burger is super juicy and so delicious. As I said before, this place looks like a hole in the ground......but I've learned, some of the best places do!

Made the trip to Minneappolis just so we could try these Juicy Lucy's and they did not disappoint. Be sure to get there early if you want to sit down and eat in house. We got there 10 minutes after opening and there was a line out the door right after we sat down. The staff was super friendly and didnt rush us when we were deciding what drinks we wanted. We were in Minneapolis for one night and I was trying to find the best place to eat. When I read about the Jucy Lucy, I knew this place was the place to come. We got there around 5 on a Friday. It was fairly crowded with a handful of empty tables. The menu is small. Everyone comes for one thing: the Jucy Lucy. It's a burger with cheese cooked in the middle of it. It comes with grilled onions and pickles. This burger was incredible. The cheese melts into a liquid so if you aren't careful it will explode and burn you. The liquid cheese is perfect. I could have had three burgers. We also got fries which were huge and also delicious. Considering they're really only making one thing, I was surprised how long it took to get our food. It was very slow. It also took forever for someone to acknowledge us and seat us when we got there. It's cash only (maybe checks too, but who does that?). They have an ATM there if you don't have any cash. It was definitely all worth the wait. If you're in Minneapolis, come here for a Jucy Lucy.

I’ve been craving a jucy lucy for so long and wanted to come here again so bad! We know they have maybe the best one ever, but didn’t have a very good experience today, December 30th. We ordered 5 Jucy Lucys, all with onions and 1 with picles. We confirmed our order with the waitress several times before and it seemed we were good to go. But she still got it wrong. The waitress brought 6 burgers (one extra), all with picles and one with very little cheese. When we mentioned we had ordered without picles, she said that she brought what we ordered and that’s the way their burgers come. Then she said she could take them back to have the pickles removed. But well, we could do that ourselves. We also mentioned the extra burger, which she got and threw in the trash promptly. All of this without even saying sorry or even trying to be nice. Very robotic attitude. It seems it was more important to keep saying that we were wrong than trying to be accommodating. We waited almost an hour and a half with a baby because we really like the food, but left with a bittersweet taste.

Came here for the Jucy Lucy and they didn't disappoint. We had to wait in line for a while but....dare I say it...it was worth it. They dont use plates and there's no ice so just a heads up. They serve the soda right out of the can, although I just had 2 beers. Fry baskets are huge so unless you are extremely hungry, go for the half serving of fries. There were only 3 people working, but they were rocking it. Plus, Obama's been here...so duh I recommend.

This is a cash-only establishment and the home of the Jucy Lucy. Yes, that is their spelling. This is a small bar, right on the corner but it’s a bit of a wait and once seated it is crowded. The grill is visible as you wait to be seated, small area. The food was delicious. We ordered a full basket of fries and was enough for six of us to share. The Jucy Lucy comes with pickles and onions with the hot melted cheese inside the burger....caution, it is very hot at first bite. The soft drinks are per can and it’s a bar so they offer pitchers of beer for a good price. Service was good and we all enjoyed it.

A must try, am I right?! The food and drink menu is small but mighty. Only beer and wine is served here, no hard liquor. The famous Jucy Lucy is 8.75, comes with pickles, and you're asked if you want raw or fried onions. Mayo, extra cheese, lettuce is extra. No tomatoes served here. 1 full order of fries could feed 4 people generously but be prepared to eat some extra as they are addicting! The burgers take some time to cook as the grill is fairly small. The food was great and the staff was super friendly.

Excellent little place with a very well seasoned flat top. Juicy Lucy burgers are the big draw and they're excellent but be careful of the molten cheese geyser that can happen if you bite at the wrong angle. The regular cheese burger is low key the best burger though. The sauteed onions are also a must have topping.

CASH ONLY!!! The fight goes on re the original Juicy Lucy. I've had a few over trips to the city. Honestly, this is by far the most salty. It was hard to really assess it on any other notes because the salt was overwhelming. It was juicy. The fries were cooked well. The parking is street parking. The entrance isn't really accessible. The restrooms are down a narrow staircase and are gender-specific. One thing I will say, this place was PACKED at like 2pm on a Wednesday so it can't be all bad!

Matts’ Bar as visited by an out-of-towner Upon entering the joint, the smell of grilled onions and seared flesh punches one in the nose. And it is marvelous. The grill station is limited to a single flat top no larger than 36” and a single 40lb fryer. Which is all that’s needed, as the menu is limited to the classics: burger, cheeseburger, Double burger, double cheeseburger, and the Jucy Lucy, each with or without fried onions, and baskets of fries. There’s a grilled cheese sandwich, and a chicken sandwich for sale as well. Bags of chips were also available. The first bite sold this burger with zero questions as a combination of melted cheese and beef juice explode, creating an imminent need for wet wipes as the amount of “beard food” went instantly from 0-11. The fried onions, as of course we ordered ours “with,” offered both a textural and flavorful contrast to the cheese-laden beef patties. My son, a budding food enthusiast, squees in delight. We nod and grunt at each other as I begin the ritual of mopping the cheese from my beard. This is easily a contender for one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Which is saying a lot, considering I’ve cooked a few thousand in my lifetime. Let’s not skip the fries, folks. Pure potato goodness. No weird coating. No stupid preseason. Just potatoes, oil, salt. Done The pricing is super affordable also, with the highest priced item coming in at $8.75. Also, taxes are included in the menu prices. Dinner for 3, which was two Jucy Lucy burgers, a basket of fries, two soda pops and a beer, only rang up to $35. Not bad for a full belly and greasy grin! Overall, I would definitely recommend making Matt’s a regular spot. Despite the many and varied words from food network hosts, online bloggers, and magazine writers, Matt’s easily beats out the 5-8 club any time. 10/10 would eat here again.

The place is super out of the way from everything ( which Ik can’t be helped but still), the place didn’t have charger outlets ( phone was close to dying and would’ve enjoyed the experience more if they had this simple thing), and it’s the year 2020 and they still don’t take debit cards ( had to use their sketchy atm machine bc I don’t carry cash). But overall it’s a food institution worth checking out one time.

Matt's is known as the original home of the "Jucy Lucy", and I can't imagine a better one for my first experience in Minneapolis. I went thinking it was just a novelty and am glad to say I was wrong. The burger was legitimately delicious, the fries were great, and the people were very sweet and hospitable. Know going in that it's cash only, that there may be a long line/wait if you're not there by the time it opens, and that you better be careful with that first bite!

Don't forget to bring cash!! We finally we were able to make a visit one of the most iconic burger places of the city in MLPS and see why it's very famous. The "Juicy Lucy" is a delicious cheeseburger, I got mine with onions (they grill them) we got some fries and it was all so perfect. The waiter had our table filled with our drinks and was polite. They made time for all my questions I had about the burgers and fries. They are great at what they do, and I highly recommend them a visit to this place. We had come at the perfect time and we got our table with no wait time and our food was out quick, as we sat there eating it started filling up. We stayed around for 30 minutes or so and by the time we got up to pay and leave it had gotten so full with a bunch of small groups of people standing around just waiting for a place to seat. I think the best time would be starting around opening time and if not prepare to wait, but its very worth it. the line had started to gain outside the building and I can tell you why, BEST Cheeseburgers EVER!!!!.

Often imitated, never duplicated. Still the best Juicy Lucy ever, and I'll die on that hill. Obviously, they were the original creators and it shows. Forget the cash-only, small booth, soda in a can, no ice, funny little stairwell to the bathroom in the basement. Friendly staff and even friendlier food to my tummy. Service was very quick, we probably waited for 5-10 mins for food. The lady warned us that the Lucy was hot so we were cautious. Unfortunately, I’ve never eaten a burger with cheese on the inside so I wasn’t prepared for what was about to happen. I took a small bite into the burger as it was still sizzling in my hands. I bit in and the warm, inviting juices sent sparks flying into my taste buds. Don’t bite into the burger too hard at first because the cheese will ooze out and it’s hot and gets everywhere. My boyfriend got it all over his pants and it was a mess. The half fries are definitely big enough for two people. The photo of Obama on the wall next to me was also a huge plus. He was grinning widely and after enjoying his Lucy. I think if the former president of the United States approves of Matt’s bar, then I do as well. I probably wouldn’t have eaten here if there was a picture of trump on the wall. 10/10 would return on my next adventure to Minneapolis.

Amazing Jucy Lucy Burger (they spell it that way on purpose), so delicious! This little bar has a great feel. When we walked in their was a line for a table of about 12 people, despite that we were sat within 10-15min. Their is 1 cook, 1 bartender and 1 server - they are quick and having a beer while you wait for your food makes it go pretty fast. The burger is worth any wait, eat it carefully the inside is very hot. It is full of a melted cheese, not your normal melted cheese it is much creamer and if you like onions make sure to have it with onions. I am a big burger fan and this one was awesome!

The space is very small and there is usually a line of people waiting to be seated that ends out the door. There is one server and I believe one cook. Food is ok. The juicy Lucy is a staple and well known around the area as one of the best. The cheese was a little bland for me and the beef quality was bubba burger at best. The line is normally pretty long so plan for a while. Took me 35min to get my burger to go, not even counting dine in. That’s why I took away another star. Other than that this place is ok. Have to visit once at least. Heads up it’s cash only. They have an ATM on site though for those who can’t plan ahead.

This was on my bucket list for quite a while, to go to the home of the original "Jucy Lucy" (I believe that is the preferred local spelling). The sandwich was just what I expected, two patties with melted cheese in the middle. However, Matt's is more than their iconic burger. It is a dive in the best sense of the word. A restaurant/bar with it's very own personality. The room was loud and crowded. Our waitress exibited the acceptable amount of surlyness. The cook dutifully ignored my compliments. Everything was PERFECT.

Went for lunch. Sign in with name and phone number for some reason even if you get seated right away. Good short selection of draft beers. Soda by the can. Ordered right away. I'm from Chicago and if you're looking to just try a Jucy Lucy like me, this is a decent one to try. I'm not a fan of it, I'd rather get the Parlour burger (which is the best burger in MN), but it's still a good burger - it's just weird to have molten lava cheese spilling out of your burger after you bite. Fries are okay - can easily share a full order with probably 4 people. It seems to always be packed and cramped, so go here as early as you can. Service is okay - pretty good for 3-4 people running the whole place. I don't get why MN people love Jucy Lucy's so much, but I recommend getting a burger somewhere else, otherwise if you're dying to try a Jucy Lucy, this is a decent place to go. Take out might be a better option. Oh and it's cash only.

After hearing about the Juicy Lucy for years, maybe my expectations were too high. The burgers were very good but I'd never wait in line or drive 25 miles to get one again. The fries are also just ok. One order of fries is enough for four people. Why? Service was good. They don't take cards, didn't have any ice for drinks and don't give you a plate. I guess this is supposed to be part of their charm but I just thought it was a little weird, especially since they charge as much as other restaurants that actually have plates and ice.

Matts is always super good. The original jucy lucy, not the knockoffs you see everywhere else. the difference that Matts brings to the table is that its molten, Its iconic, and Its a flavor you dont achieve at home. Every other juicy lucy you can make at home, (I'm looking at you at 5.8 club). Atmosphere is way outdated, yes you may have to wait, but when you dig in to some steaming hot shoestring fries with a pitcher or cold beer, the wait is satisfying. Well coming from Chicago, IL This burger called the "Jucy Lucy" was delicious. It took more than 40 minutes which is why it was a hard decision to not give them 3 stars. Beware that this place is Cash only when you come and the "Jucy Lucy" (Purposely misspelled) is almost $8 a burger. For those with a hearty appetite I suggest you order 2 unless you order the Fries. Also to eat this burger style. Either wait for it to cool down or take little bites around the burger. DO NOT bite deep as it is covered in hot cheese and it will dribble on you fingers and clothing when hot. They are are in Competition with another place called a 5-8 Club restaurant that has there version of Juicy Lucy which "Juicy" is spelled correctly. I have not tried their version and this is my last week living in St Paul/Minneapolis and going back to Chicago,IL. SO far burgers are the best here IMO than in Chi-town. Also less expensive. Only drawback is service is slow compared to fast service in Chicago,IL. Also be ready to wait in line outside in this place as this is what tourist and natives come here for. I am not surprise because back in Chicago we had a hole in the wall place called "Hot Dougs" that operated like this before it closed. This is a must try either living here or having time to pass by on vacation. I recommend it.

As a New Yorker I appreciated the no nonsense and straight to the point style of service. They're too busy to sit there and chit chat and my mission was to eat. That being said, not having ice for your soft drinks, very bland and basic fries, and a very limited menu make this place somewhere I wouldn't go every day for lunch if I was a local. This place is a one trick pony that hits the nail on the head every time. PS - Also who the hell operates as a cash only restaurant anymore...?

Because of the legacy that is the Juicy Lucy Which is good, the waiter is carrying the weight of the restaurant on her back and your beer is about 5 bucks for a bottle. Overall good but I wouldn't go out of my way. Expected more from the burger but the cheese or what looks like cheese, pours out and you don't get much in the actual burger. For a $10 burger I would expect to be able to eat all of it, including the cheese considering that's what it is famous for. But if you want a pretty cool place to escape being stabbed or shot this is a good place. Paying kinda sucks. Super crowded so it makes paying difficult.

Best juicy Lucy in the city for sure. Beats out 5-8 by a long shot. They are so much juicier and the cheese more explosive. And the diced onions are better imo. There is pretty much always a long wait, but the wait is well worth it. I wish they wouldnt turn off their phone so we could order take out, but its probably for the best or people there would never get their food and as there is only one line so it would create problems for everyone. Their only rival for best juicy lucy is the nook, but they are all the way out in st paul and this is the more classic of the two.

Great food and low prices served in a classic neighborhood bar. I have frequented Matt’s for many years. If you go to Matt’s you may have to wait for a table, but it is worth the wait. I usually have the Juicy Lucy with grilled onions, 1/2 order of fries (a half order is more than enough for two people) and a Grain Belt Premium... what’s more Minnesotan than that? The Juicy Lucy at Matt’s is the gold standard by which others are measured. The other Juicy Lucys never measure up. In fact, Matt’s is so awesome that when coworkers visit the Twin Cities on business I usually recommend they visit Matt’s. My colleagues who’ve visited Matt’s have all loved the Juicy Lucy and I bet you will too!

I really want to love this place. Maybe if I was coming to drink first and eat second, I’d have a different mind set. We came solely for the Juicy Lucy. We also got an order of fries. The fries were so mediocre, not worth it. The juicy Lucy was actually very good. It tastes pretty good. I don’t know if I’d go out of my way for it again. We waited around 15 minutes to order once seated and then another 40 minutes for our food. I’d give the whole experience a solid, Meh.

While this place is cash-only, quite small and cramped inside, and lacks any outdoor seating, it's all worth the Juicy Lucy. I'd recommend calling ahead to order some burgers as takeout. The baskets of fries are large and each serve probably 3-4 people, although the fries aren't anything special. What IS special is the Juicy Lucy's molten cheese innards exploding all over your face as you bite into this glorious burger. If you want anything other than that, just go somewhere else. This isn't the place for variety or dietary restrictions. Just enjoy the hot fats as they please your palate.

I will say if you're super hungry and don't feel like waiting don't go during peak times which are dinner hours, especially on weekends. It's a small place so its easily packed. First off... Don't expect to kneel and weep thanking the food Gods after experiencing the Jucy Lucy (as I expected)... You'll be a bit disappointed. It's a stuffed cheese burger at a bar. It's good, don't get me wrong. But the burger itself isn't all that special. It's the place. I mean It's not exactly a Kobe burger prepared by chef Morimoto. It's just good and cheesy! The fries are awesome, crisp and hot because they have little choice but to serve them to you almost instantly (hardly any room to stage the food orders behind this tiny crowded bar) It's just the quintessential American dive bar with good food. It comes complete with a surly, sweaty short order cook... A smart-alec bartender and a sweet little fiery waitress who covers her section (which is the whole bar) with speed and a smile! It was the promise of the Jucy Lucy that brought me on my pilgrimage...But it's the people, the service and the atmosphere that will bring me back.

The juicy Lucy burger was awesome, the fries were basic and the chicken sandwich was pretty salty and basic as well. I'm new to Minneapolis but I've had the different variations and twists on a Lucy. But this Juicy Lucy is fantastic. They do not over do it with bizarre flavors and they have excellent tasting beef patties. The fries come in easy to share portions and the burgers make for a great Instagram moment. I'd say on an empty stomach you might need one and half burgers to get full. So maybe stack up on fries or gorge yourself on a couple of these guys. ALSO CASH ONLY WHEN I WENT. THERE IS AN ATM.

Cash only. Remeber that lol. Anyone visiting the twin cities has to try Matt's at least once. Its good, not great. Obviously the juicy lucy is the thing to get. Always done to medium. They warn you to be carfeful while biting into it since there's a chance you'll have hot cheese spray on you. Everything else on the menu is meh. There is always a line that snakes outside. It has routinely taken me an hour to get in. Summer or winter, rain or snow, there is always a line. Because of the constant crowd, service isn't great. Waiters routinely forget to refill your water. Burgers can take 20 minutes or more to arrive. But I guess its part of the experience. Also, cash only lol. I'd probably rate this 4 stars if it wasn't a Minneapolis classic.

I Like Matt's, it doesn't seem to change, and that good. If you want a burger, fries, and something to drink with it, this is a good spot to try. If you been there before, you'll appreciate that some good places keep on going. It's small and last night there was a wait, but since I was with friends, that wasn't a problem. If you are alone you can probably sit on a stool at the bar, and watch the fry cook - they should charge for the show.

After living here for years and having all the imitations we decided to go to the home of the Jucy Lucy at Matt's. Busy, loud with a wait, the dive atmosphere was as expected. And the burger itself was tasty, but was smaller than expected. Great french fries and the beer was cold. Worth a visit to say you've been there. Hint - try to go for a late lunch or early dinner during the week. Less of a wait.

This place is great! Best little dive bar in town, with the tastiest, most authentic Juicy Lucy burgers you can get! In normal times, expect to wait in line for a table, and dress for the weather, as the line often extends outside, but it's worth the wait. They have made some changes due to COVID, and you can pick up your order outside. I'm not sure if they're doing any indoor service at the moment.

The food is always delicious and well worth the usually long wait. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the clientele is usually respectful of the fact that the restaurant is pretty small and that others are waiting to be seated. All prices include tax, and Matt's Bar is a cash-and-local-check only establishment. There is an ATM for use onsite near the stairs to go down to the bathrooms (the bathrooms are not handicapped-accessible.) In the past couple of years their prices have gone up considerably. For instance, a can of soda is $1.75, which seems exorbitant. Also they did away with their on-tap Angry Orchard, which is unfortunate. In spite of both of these negative factors, Matt's Bar is worth the stop.
