Reviews of Lao Sze Chuan
Very friendly staff. The food came quickly and was delicious. I definitely recommend going with a group so you can order a variety of dishes to share. You should be prepared for some spice. If you don’t like spice I would suggest let them know and they could suggest some dishes as they have so many. Don’t forget to get those sesame balls for dessert (so good!).
Great food here although the Dan Dan noodles are pretty salty. However, the price is not cheap. Especially not sure about the difference between the mandatory service fee and tip when they charge my credit card.
Love this place! Terrific variety (the menu is huge) and the flavors are wonderful. Even a really simple dish like the cold Szechuan noodles is just perfect — spicy, tangy and just slightly sweet. That’s probably one of my favorite restaurant dishes in the Twin Cities. Ambiance is a bit nicer since a recent remodel but pretty basic. Service was helpful and pleasant.
i got the spicy beef noodle soup and it’s very good! the best szechuan beef i’ve had in Minneapolis, and I’ve tried many places. the broth is more oily and chili than what you may expect from a taiwanese beef soup, but i prefer more of a mala broth which is why this stood out to me. also, the beef is incredibly tender and you get so much in one bowl. the noodles were good, i would prefer a bit more chewiness, but it doesn’t affect the overall quality of this specific dish. i’ve ordered other things from here, the green beans, dumplings, beef dish, beef rice noodles, cucumber salad, and everything was pretty good! but i’m a noodle soup fan and that was certainly the highlight and reason i’ll become a regular here. Also, our waiter was super sweet and friendly. he gave my mom extra guava candies after overhearing how much she loved them.
Best Chinese food on campus! The crab rangoon, sesame and orange chicken were all amazing. 10/10 recommend!
I rarely have nothing bad to say, this food is awesome. Fresh. The crab Rangoon are the best I’ve ever had, no sauce needed. House special hot and sour sour was also awesome, and the main courses… just try it. Seems like it may be a family owned restaurant and the people are so friendly. Will be eating there again 🥰 …
When I was little, my parents would take me to restaurants that tried to perfectly replicate foods of their childhood. My grandpa was from Sichuan until he had to flee to Taiwan during the Cultural Revolution.
This restaurant’s dishes so perfectly captured my childhood experience of food.
I ordered the spicy wonton soup, spicy green bean jelly, the Tea Roasted Duck, pickled vegetable and chili lamb & fish soup, pork mushu, and sweet and sour pork ribs. The wontons, mung bean jelly, tea roasted duck, and pickled soup were the dishes that reminded me of childhood the most! Amazing job to the chef! The mushu was amazing according to my friend! They’re real pancakes and NOT tortillas!
Amazing job to this place! It’s pretty pricey, but the feeling the food gives me when I eat it is priceless.
Shout out to Booker! He helped carried all my bags to the car for two blocks! It was only his second day there. Good job, guys!!!!! Definitely will try more again!!
13 buck lunch specials are too good to pass up. Had a big portion of extremely good general tso's with fried rice and a drink. I was gonna take some leftovers to go but I ate it all. Just the right amount of spice. I ate here a month or two back and got a plate of their szechuan style chicken with peppers- the place is legit. Crazy to me that it isn't busy all the time- it deserves it!
Just ok. I've had Lao Sze Chuan in Chicago and it was quite a bit better. Dried chili chicken had the right flavors, but the chicken pieces were all super small and many were grisly. For Sichuan cuisine in the Twin Cities, go with Grand Szechuan. This country style chicken is the equivalent of Lao's dried chili chicken, but better as are the other dishes.
Best Chinese restaurant in the twin cities!!
We often go here for lunch. Service is so bad. We have disappointed fist time. Sadly, I can only assume they continue the good work into dinner as we have never been there for dinner.
In all the times we have gone at lunch time we have found the service prompt, the food prety good, and the prices very reasonable.
Well worth a try if you are close.
Great food and really friendly service!
Delicious food as usual and it's been consistent ! Our favorite spicy restaurant.
The most authentic Sichuan food in town!!! Incredible! You’re got to try their eggplant and fish dishes! I’ve got to go back there with friends. You won’t be disappointed
This place serves some really delicious chinese cuisine. The noodles and Ramen are very delicious with a wide range of options. The pan fried noodles is a must try.
Their Dan Dan Noodles are FIRE -- so good! Excellent food.
This was my first visit here. It took me by surprise as the customer service was superb!!! We had a party of 8 people and enjoyed a small private room with delicious warm tea and round table. The food was better than what I've expected and wasn't as greasy as I thought. I had their szechuan chicken? And it was delicious! Overall, it was a great place to dine. The only opportunity is their bathroom, it could be more stall.
No skimping on fresh food.
Great Food, great variety and spice level, spicy but also full of flavor. Sticky rice is on point, staff is friendly. Service was a tad slow but you could tell everything was cooked fresh so well worth a small wait.
Mind blowing authentic Chinese food. Just loved it. Traveled 100 miles to have this.
This is a great little find! The food was very tasty!
By far the single most quintessential Chinese dining experience in Minneapolis. This place is among the top of the list when introducing guests and friends to delicious Minnesotan food. The food isn't greasy unlike many "fast-food" Chinese joints, and isn't layered with a film of starchy sauces. The meat dishes are varied in texture. The "Taste of Szechuan Chicken" is juicy and sweet, with a sizzling and crunchy texture. The "Eggplant with Garlic sauce" is a zesty and sweet vegetarian dish. The portions are generous, and seating is plentiful. You'll rarely find a long wait. The dishes range between $10-$17, but you'll be sure to go home with leftovers. Trust me - these aren't the leftovers you forget about in the fridge. 5/5 A Must
We order take out from here every chance we get! The chairman mao pork and the diced chicken with peppers are our all time favorite!
it’s really good and great for the price but there’s only one guy serving here by himself and i feel so bad. he’s served the tables, sets the tables and brings out fod to several people all by himself each time i’ve come. it’s great and we always tip him, i just hope they hire more people to help, he seems so stressed out and over worked
Ordered the sesame chicken for delivery through uber eats. Always risky ordering from places you haven't before because theres really no way to see what the portions are like. They certainly did not let me down, an entire plastic takeout container of chicken, with one of the traditional Chinese takeout boxes of rice on the side. Kept me fed for my entire 12 hour shift at work! Was delicious too! Would highly recommend!
Well worth the price, even though there are cheaper Asian restaurants near-by. Service isn't always great, but not bad either. Huge amount of menu options, and some of the best chicken dishes I've ever had.
Visit 1. Group dinner; They have rooms which you can reserve for group dinners, so you get little privacy from day to day bustle. But they can't seat more than 8-10 people comfortably. good options on the menu and food was 4star.
Visit 2. Lunch combo takeaway; less variety, food was 3 stars. Edible, somewhat tasty, but not something you'll crave. What I liked was, for a mid day office meal, perfect place. There was line for the combo meal, yet I was in and out in 3 minutes! And the quantity!!!! Wow! Wayy better than panda express at the U, for a similar price!
It's the most authentic Sze Chuan resteraunt in twin cities. The green peppercorn series is such a treat :) Saseme balls is also very yummy.
6/1/2017: Little Szechuan is very good in all aspects. They have a team of people covering the no frills dining room with everybody pitching in to provide a very nice experience. I ordered fried won tons which were just okay but the Szechuan spicy beef (see pix) was far better than I expected. They present it in a giant bowl served with a little white rice which isn't enough for the huge amount of spicy beef but they offered more. Everything about Little Szechuan is outstanding except the won tons and the parking which isn't their fault.
Hands down the best sit-down Chinese place I've been to. Food tasted amazing. Service was even better.
Probably my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. Every time I eat here it's almost an out of body experience. It's so damn good. Every birthday it's my spot. The food is so good I gorge myself and feel like a beached whale for a day or two. I was broken hearted when there other location in St Paul changed their menu, but these guys are staying true to the old school. God bless them!!!
The main dishes were great. Some of the best Chinese I've ever had. Ordered a round of cream cheese wontons first though and they were horrible. Appeared to be packaged, not made in house. We went during a down time so I can't comment much, but the staff did a good job.
This is easily the best Szechuan restaurant in the Twin Cities. The food is consistently hot, fresh, and spicy.
Really good lunch special deal here. 3 items + rice/noodles etc... for like 9 bucks... The price has increased since opening.. so I don't come here as often. The food is really authentic and rich though.
I love this place. It gets quite busy during lunch, so either come early, or after 1pm. The lunch special starts from 11 and runs til 2pm.
Little Szechuan may have gotten a new name, but it's just as good as ever. The dish that was called Szechuan beef on the old menu is now Boiled beef in spicy sauce. Which I guess is informative, I've always wondered how they got the meat so tender
Complimentary appetizer and great food with good service. Definitely worth a try!
Menu is overwhelmingly large and it's difficult to choose an item... But waiting staff will give good recommendations.
Originally recommended to us by a Chinese co-worker. Best food EVER! Try the tofu/peanut appetizer, the Szechuan fries, the scallion lamb (my 11 year old grandson's favorite), and the corn pizza. And anything else that looks good (it will be good!).
Amazing food. We ordered a bunch to take home as well because authentic Chinese food is rare near me. Would highly recommend! Check out some of the photos I posted. Mouth-watering.
The service was good, food was decent but keep in mind this location now caters to college students. The food isn't as good as it used to be when it was just one location in Saint Paul. Back then, Little Szechuan had the offered the most authentic Szechuan dishes, similar to many I found while working in China.
Friendly staff except one lady who seemed to be yelling and told us the kitchen is closed and if you need more food, let us know now. May be she just had a bad day or something. We had rice, shrimp, tilapia and chicken. The chicken came with a lot of dry red chilli peppers compared to the actual pieces of chicken! The food was delicious but very hot as in spicy hot!! But overall, it was cheap as you get a giant bowl of food for $15.
Fish soup was really good
Surprisingly not bad, the dishes were plentiful albeit quite salty. Rice was mediocre, a little starchy and sticky
Food was really good and tasty. Great value for money. Good to go with a big group because they have private dining rooms to fit large group(10-12). Service was not up to the mark. The server messed up with the order and started taking away plates before we were done.
Once rated in the Top-50 of Chinese restaurants in the Nation, this somewhat popular restaurant offers a wide-variety of authentic Szechuan dishes coupled with the American Chinese classics (e.g. fried egg rolls, General Tso's Chicken, fried rice, etc.) but does so in a rather un-oblivious way. At moments, you believe the only answer to your hunger is cheap lunch combo they offer but take the time to peruse the many options they have. Their menu is large, the staff is hit-or-miss, and the food is HOT. I don't think I would have it any other way.
Excellent! Came here with a large group, got a lot of different dishes to share, everything was awesome. The only slight issue was that they couldn't split the bill for all of us, but we figured it out. Recommended!
It used to be a good place. But recently the food size become noticeably smaller than before. Taste is still good. I would still go there but not as frequently as half a year ago.
Love all the chicken dishes here
Always busy but great food! Family eats here and we always order 3-4 dishes and share. The portions are great, food is always fresh and hot, and the service is quick and prompt.
We, vegetarian group of five, ordered half their tofu menu. everything was very tasty. Best Chinese food I have had in twin cities.
The staff is really arrogant and does not offer help. They also charge extra for any kind of other small service. The food is really good though and I almost feel like the staff has made the restaurant go downhill. It used to be my favorite place and now I don't go there until there is a party.
Little Szechuan is not your usual Chinese restaurant. While they serve the usual staples you find at Chinese restaurants, you miss so much if you don't opt for their more authentic cuisine. Their food is incredible, and I am sorely disappointed that their nearer West End location has closed
Big fan of this place even though they never have my pan fried thick rice noodles lol.
Food is good and staff are nice and friendly. I ordered rabbit and it was super spicy. They have lunch specials which you can get 3 different things for less than $10. The portion is huge and enough for 2 people.
The lunch special here is great value! Food is at the perfect level of spicy (high). Clean restaurant. Doesn't take amex.
Very large portions, some of the best Chinese ive had. I went twice the week I was visiting.
The food was amazing - extremely flavorful and the service to boot was pretty great.
Went there on Christmas Day and boy were we glad that they were open - overall definitely a place I would return to.
PS The Szechuan chicken is a flavor explosion - definitely get that!
Stir fried side pork is too salty.
Mapo tofu doesn't come with a meat.
First time I went I got food poisoning, but second time was good! Mongolian beef was very tasty and I liked the pan fried potstickers too
If you want real Sichuan food, this the place to go in Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Besides the good food, the service and decoration are very nice. I definitely recommend it.
Good portions, and good food if you like spice. The staff is friendly!
Excellent meals, very tasty. Service was great and fast.
Wonderful 👍🤗
Very good chinese food. I get the kung pao chicken, and it was delicious. Very authentic
Our research group enjoys going here for lunch and eating family style. The tables in the back are great for large groups, and the food is of great quality for a good price.
Pretty good, although there are better chinese places in the area. The lunch special is an excellent deal though, a good number of tasty options, tons of food, and a great price.
really astonishingly excellent. everything we ordered was really good at minimum and excellent at best. highly recommended
This is another Chinese restaurant that we have visited during our short trip to Minnesota, I had fried rabbit meat for the first time and found it to be very tasty but quite bony.
This is absolutely one of the dankest restaurants I've ever been too. Their lunch special blew my mind, my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Minnesota.
They upped the lunch price to $10 so you have to get a bunch of items(disadvantage when you go in and all the items they have for the day don't look so good) they used to have options where you can get just 1-2 items and pay less but now that that's gone idk if I can go back for a cheap and filling lunch when there are so many competitive Chinese food options literally within a block.
Couple's beef is my all time favorite. It's sauce is so good with rice. Lunch special is great deal. So cheap for so much food.
The food wasn’t too expensive and it was quick, but the quality just wasn’t there.
Eddie was very good, just attentive enough, and the food was superb. Cucumber salad and orange beef were very well prepared. So happy!
The takeout option is great if you need to grab something quick but filling. The vegetable fried rice and vegetable lo mein are good value for the money.
I got lost in the probably hundred-item menu. Big portions and some dishes that aren't typical of an American Chinese restaurant, but nothing that made me likely to return.
Nice and spicy! Their mapo tofu is really good and I look forward to going back to try their hot pot!
Good food, good service :)
The best Chinese food I had so far
Usually I hate Chinese food.. apart from in Little Szechuan! Would recommend the spicy tofu.
Great authentic Chinese food. Some of the best I’ve ever had (even in China).
Very authentic food. Love the family room, it is so convenient with kids. Should try their fish with diced green chillies
Delicious food with great vegetarian options. Amazing staff. Always appreciate them being open on the holidays.
The service is excellent and the food is amazing!! We will definitely be returning!!
Love the Cold bean jelly and Schezuan spicy tofu and ma la tofu. This is one of the best Szechuan food I have eaten. I crave this food and would eat here everyday if possible.
one of the few quality authentic Chinese restaurants in Twin Cities
A little bit expensive but the food, especially kung pao beef, tastes excellent.
Always enjoy good Chinese food.
New favorite! Huge portions and great taste! Love the General tso's tofu is amazing!
Extremely good all around. Very authentic
Best authentic Chinese food in the state.
Did to-go order, fast n delicious
Very good food and service. Generous portions and very delicious meals. Highly recommend
very good taste and portion size, loved it
Delicious food! Lot of spicy options for vegeterian, seafood...
Great Chinese food. Spicy szechun style dishes are delicious. Highly recommended.
Feels a little expensive when looking at the menu, but the portion size is very large, very splittable and good for sharing!
This is my favorite restaurant on campus. Their mapo tofu is so good and service is great!
The food is really delicious here. Great tofu options for vegetarians
It was Ok. Good place for quick lunch.
The food quality seems to get worse every time we go. Seems like they are in need of getting the original Chinese chefs back again.
I've been taking my students here for years. This is most authentic chinese restaurant I've been too outside of Chinatown in SF. Yes, for people who are used to 'american chinese' restaurants all over the country the menu items might be weird but just about every dish I have tried is excellent. The menu has a Szechwan tilt, which means thee are lots of chili and other peppers - but you can get non spicy things as well. This place is a real find - I'll continue to go back
Great food!! Wonderful service!
Good amount of food for the price came pretty fast too 😊 ill look forward to getting more in the future …
Really good, authentic food!
Great food especially if you like it spicey, big portions and friendly staff.
Some of the best Szechuan I've eaten in USA. I always return when visiting Minneapolis
Yummy, the food is very good.
I like the lunch special. I can eat what I like! I like noodles and fried rice with some protein on side!
We absolutely love the authentic Szechuan food. Highly recommended.
Haven't eaten here since the name change.
The stir fried jalapeno with pork was fantastic! 👍 …
Favorite Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities
Always have wonderful time there. Fabulous food, nice service too.
It's not very Chinese. It's a little bit American-chinese style. But food is delicious.
Great place to eat, good food, pleasant staff. Would go again.
The best shrimp fried rice I’ve ever had🥰 …
Amazing food, private rooms for big parties with crazy children!
Great food!
If you like traditional Chinese food with rice, this is the place to go
Great service. spicy fried tofu is delicious.
Delicious! Tofu is fried crispy outside, pillowy inside.
I went shortly after opening because of the hype around the St Paul location. It was a very disappointing experience.
Lunch Special is awesome! Lots of food for the price
Great spicy dishes!
Amazing, authentic Chinese food
Good food, quick service, no fortune cookies
Good customer service but food wasn't worth the money
Love this place!
Authentic Chinese food, just too much MSG, ok service.
Good sichuan food
Lunch combo plate has lots of options. Also give lots of food for me to finish.
Best chinese food I've ever had!
Best Chinese food around this area hands down.
Taste was good. Quantity was definitely a lot.
Food was excellent and service was what I expect.
