Reviews of Kyatchi
Shannon Mahedy
First of all- the pressed salmon sushi was out of this world! A friend of mine has been RAVING about the pressed sushi for the past 2 years, so my expectations were high. It totally exceeded my expectations- zesty, buttery, and the perfect balance of textures. We also ordered barley tea, gyoza, a red snapper roll, and a yellow tail roll. The yellow tail roll was exceptional. The red snapper was good, but the flavor wasn’t my favorite (personal preference). The gyoza was delightful too. The barley tea was a great addition to the meal and was the perfect warming element on a chilly night. We were satisfied by the amount of food we ordered, but I would recommend ordering a couple of additional rolls if you’re really trying to be pleasantly full after the meal. Overall, great experience. We will be returning soon- probably for happy hour!

My wife and I went there for happy hour sushi and we felt like this was great value!
We got a negihama roll, Kara-age, and the summer roll.
The negihama roll was ok, but nothing special.
The kara-age was absolutely delicious. The chicken was deliciously browned and with the Mayo dressing was absolutely phenomenal.
The summer roll was delicious. Lemony, creamy, with delicious fish. It was the most delicious sushi roll I’ve ever had.

So, I was craving some authentic Japanese food and after a quick Google search, I found Kyatchi. Now, needless to say, I know that truly authentic Japanese food is a rarity here in the U.S. All you really ever get is sushi and ramen! But, the menu seemed promising to me at the time.
I had never seen OSHIZUSHI (Kyatchi's famous pressed sushi) before, so I ordered the:
SAKE OSHIZUSHI * (GF) $22
"our famous pressed sushi with salmon, slice of lemon and tobiko"
^^ This was really flavorful and had the thinnest lemon slice I've even seen! The lemon really enhanced the flavor of the salmon. However, for the price, I was honestly expecting a bigger serving size to potentially share with my partner... but, it was an extremely small sushi roll.
I also ordered one of the KUSHIMOMO (SKEWERS). I chose the SHISHITO
(Japanese sweet chili pepper) in a yakitori sauce, which the waitress recommended. It was really good! And reasonably priced at $4.25.
The last thing I ordered was a Ume (pickled plum) Shiso Maki Roll for $8.75. It was very interesting, especially to my particular palate, and I'm so glad I gave it a try! I'm not sure if I'd order it again, but it was definitely worth the try. However, the price seemed a bit steep since this roll ONLY had the pickled plum, rice and Shiso leaf. Unfortunately, I don't know if those items are pricey, but it just "seemed" high to me. Usually, vegetarian Maki Rolls are closer to $5.
My partner ordered a bowl of Ramen for $15 (which is a very standard price, in my opinion) and he really enjoyed it. The broth was flavorful and not too salty like some I've had before. The pork belly was also really, really delicious!
The only thing I didn't like about the restaurant was that they played hardcore EDM (that I would love at a music festival or dance club) which I just did NOT think suited the environment at all. It really made me feel rushed and a bit anxious considering I was really in the mood for a relaxing, authentic dinner.
Other than that, my partner and I enjoyed ourselves. I wouldn't order the pressed sushi again due to the price/quantity, but everything else was reasonable enough. Kyatchi isn't my favorite Japanese restaurant but I do like that they have more than just ramen and sushi on their menu.

My friends and I enjoyed the outdoor season because the inside was incredibly noisy! The menu was very expansive, which we all appreciate, and our food was nicely portioned and excellent!

I went with my partner for a New Years Eve celebratory dinner and all the staff was friendly and very helpful. We were torn between the Berkshire pork gyoza and the fried chicken Kara-age for an appetizer, and ended up very pleased with the gyoza. The three rolls we ordered: yellow tail with green onion, red snapper with shiso, and the pressed salmon were all amazing but the pressed salmon roll -Sake Oshizushi- was truly stunning. It is one of the best food experiences I've ever had and I cannot wait to find an excuse to declare sushi night again soon

It's winter, and despite sitting in the table right in front of the door we were quite comfortable thanks to the curtain they have set up. Street parking wasn't hard on this early Thursday dinner out with my 14yo who wanted ramen.
We were fortunate to arrive during happy hour and the veggie trio (pictured) was fantastic. I enjoyed a few other dishes as well as the nigori sake. The seabass oshizushi (pressed sushi, pictured) really stood out as a unique but traditional item I haven't seen yet at other local sushi places. My kid reports the ramen as 10/10, mentioning the melt-in-your-mouth pork it contained. The broth was richly flavored (roasty almost?) but light, not the super-thick tonkotsu you might find elsewhere.
No credit card tipping (extra percentage added in menu prices) left me feeling like it was a great value, but wished I could have tipped my server more for his very friendly service.

Very interesting Japanese Fusion spot. We dined on the chicken meatball and pork belly skewers, the flying squid, the Ramen, the scallop maki roll, and the artic char specialty roll.
Loved the decor and atmosphere. The server was super friendly and attentive.
Food all came out great (appropriate temp, excellent presentation, fresh).
Onto the food. The chicken meatball and pork belly skewers were great. Great balance of savory and umami. The char from the grill also played well with the flying squid. The squid is not wasted as you get and entire squid minus the waste parts. The tentacles were a bit chewy, but the body n fin were tender and tasty. My only critique would be the mayo they utilize as sauce for the squid would be better subbed for a sauce of some sort.
I had the sushi rolls. They were both tasty and I could definately recommend both. The artic char roll has a distinct bite of lemon and was a truly fun combo of textures and flavors. The scallop maki were tasy as well, but were needing that dip in soy and maybe a sprinkle of wasabi for kick.
My fiancé had the ramen. She didnt enjoy the broth or how chewy the pork was, it was solid ramen otherwise. It just wasnt anywhere near the best in uptown/midtown area.
Overall Kyatchi exceeded multiple expectations and was a delightful experience.

We ordered a yellowtail roll, sockeye roll, king salmon sashimi, and a picked plum roll. It was all great tasting. Having the fish rolls and then having the pickled plum roll was a great combo which really worked well together. We each had a bowl of rice to eat the sashimi with, the sashimi was well cut and great tasting. We had hot sake to drink with our meal which was incredible. We were very impressed with the different tastes and the help we received from our waiter.

Fabulous place to get some really good Japanese food. We went during happy hour and the beer and food options were aplenty. I love Japanese style curry and the order, despite being meatless, exceeded all expectations. The kar-age, battered-fried chicken, dipped in the Mayo is always a treat. Maybe next time I’ll order two helpings of karage and add some to the curry. My brother ordered the sub and his only complaint was that the bun wasn’t toasted. It was soft, chewy and tasted good, but was missing that toasted crunch. Last let, don’t skip on the desserts because that miso caramel is amazing. It’s got a deep rich Carmel flavor that is amped up with the miso. It’s slightly salty too. The cheese cake itself is almost fluffy and they typical cheesecake taste isn’t noticeable. The chocolate ganache cheese cake is a nice contrast from the Carmel one with dark chocolate notes with a pinch of salt. I kept alternating between eating a bite of each. Overall a wonderful discovery and would gladly go again.

Hip casual upscale little sushi joint. I was very impressed with the happy hour food and drinks where you can grab dinner and drinks for around $40. Will be there again for the 4-6pm happy hour.

We were a group of 4 people, all vegetarians. We made a reservation in advance and were promptly seated on arrival.
We ordered a tofu kara-age and shishito peppers skewers to start with. Both were very tasty. We then ordered caterpillar rolls, kanpyo and ume shiso rolls. Everything was super tasty and I thought fairly priced too. For mains we had two kitsune to share among the 4 of us.
Our check came out to 100 usd approximately for 4 people which I thought was reasonable for the delicious food and the fantastic service.
I will be sure to come here again if I ever want to have Japanese cuisine. To have so many options as a vegetarian was truly great.

Kyatchi should definitely be on the must try list! The place is cozy but not cramped (perfect for date night!), and there's comfortable outdoor seating during the warmer months. They don't take reservations and it was quite busy when we visited on a Thursday after 7 PM, but it was worth the wait for an outdoor table. Our server ran her tail off yet was relaxed and engaging with every table visit. The outside seating is out front on Nicollet Ave and the intersection is relatively vibrant, adding to the buzz of the summer evening.
This place specializes in sustainable sushi and you won't find the typical types of sushi rolls you see everywhere else. It's for true sushi lovers. Sashimi and nigiri dominate the menu and there's not a California roll in sight! They even have vegetarian sushi rolls which I've not seen before. We ordered their pressed sushi, which is square in shape and nori (seaweed) free. It was delicious! We also ordered a noodle dish with scallops and it didn't disappoint. It's important to note that this is a non tipping establishment. There's a 19% service charge in order to provide employees with a livable wage and it's worked into the menu pricing. Love the concept and wish other restaurants would convert. We will definitely visit again!

Came here for the first time on our anniversary. The food was delicious! I had one of the hot dogs, and we shared a few sushi rolls. Service was fantastic. Highly recommend!
William First
Wow, wow, wow! Every bit the experience we were expecting and more. Food checked all the boxes for quality, presentation, variety (including a respectable number of vegan friendly options), and taste! Service was exceptional, Max was so welcoming and made us feel very special, even recommending a new cocktail that absolutely lived up to the hype. We will return next time we are in The Cities!

I am so glad to have Kyatchi open again for indoor dining! Their creative arrangements and flavor combinations make it a must dine at sushi restaurant. Their main sushi chef uses original techniques straight out of Japan that impostors would wish to emulate.
Tricky Sounds
This is the best restaurant on earth! Every time you sit down is an absolute blessing of flavor, ambience, class, and professionalism. Staff is top notch, food is even better. Never had anything less than an A+ experience.
Kate Rusciano
Fantastic staff, delicious food, cozy environment—had a blast and will be back! Loved the shiitake skewer and the ramen was delicious!! They kindly modified a veggie roll for me and it was so good.
Jeff Storms
After living in Japan you get spoiled with real Japanese food. This place hits the spot pretty darn well, with a few fun twists. I wish there was Okinomiyaki, and steamed buns but otherwise there is a great variety. Highly suggest visiting! I will certainly be back.
Douglas Keillor
Went for my birthday. Shared rolls and apps. The pork and the fish sandwiches were very good.
Robert Schuldt
Very good sushi and a lively environment. You won’t find Philly rolls or the like here. The fish looks good and the sushi is fantastic. Really enjoyed the miso soup. Come during happy hours between 4-6 for some specials that are worth while such as $5 Sake.
Chase Nelson
Kyatchi is a place I describe as sushi and hotdogs when I explain it to people. They also offer some noodle dishes and skewered meat. We started off with Gyuhire, one of the skewers. For entrees we chose Kaisen Yakisoba and Kitsune, both noodle dishes. Everything was pretty good, but I'd recommend going during happy hour when it's cheaper.
Sara Bauer
Ordered a bunch of rolls with my best friend for a birthday outing. Everything tasted AMAZING and was super-fresh. I might go so far as to say it was the best sushi I've ever had. Not the largest selection of rolls I've ever seen, but there's still something for everyone, including vegan options.
Adam Parker Goldberg
Responsibly sourced, sustainable, scrumptious food, wicked awesome service, totally worth flexing the “ish” of “veganish” for the fish or bask in the selection of vegan options!
Amanda Moore
So delicious and great happy hour prices! Vegan items clearly marked on the menu.
Breda Day
Loved this place. The food was so delicious. Extremely fresh and very well prepared. The service was excellent. Highly recommend.
Sheila Crawford
The people who work here are super friendly and helpful. The beer is good, but pricey. We did not get any food, bit we did notice that they have a unique menu.
Jake Eisenwinter
Delicious! So many gluten free options. Some of the best sushi I've had in MN.
Alyssa Zuck
My husband and I came here from out of town and now I'm so sad that we can't go here every weekend. Our order:
Yakisoba dog - just get it. Honestly, it might seem weird, but it was insane. 10 out of 10
Ramen - the bowl is huge and the broth is amazing. The pork was juicy. 10 out of 10
Hotate Yuzu - our first time having scallops in sushi. Was super fresh and light. 9 out of 10
Ume Shiso - my husband thought I was crazy ordering a pickled plum sushi, but it was his favorite of the night. Absolutely incredible 10 out of 10
Sake Oshizushi - you can't come here and not get pressed sushi. The full lemon slice on top just tops it off. Another 10 out of 10
Shishito Skewers - the perfect amount of char and spice! 10 out of 10
I ordered all this at the beginning and our waiter spaced out our dishes perfectly! He was an absolute gem and so attentive. I could not have asked for a better dining experience! I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
Molly Kapping
I had to try one of their hot dogs. I got the one with the Japanese soba noodles. It was so good!!! When you hear Japanese hot dog, you're not sure what to think. But these were delicious! I also tried their homemade ginger ale, which had a very nice balance of sweet and spice. Our server was very good, and had great recommendations. I can't want to come back and try more items!
Ou Chung
Sushi was great. They were fresh and very tasty.
But, ramen was definitely the worst Japanese Ramen I ever had. It was very watery and not even seasoned right.
Recommend artic char and salmon.
Via Travelers
The best. We come every week for ramen and other goodies. The bartenders are friendly and the king salmon nagiri is to die for.
Sierra Cumberland
Food, drinks, and service were all fantastic! We tried a variety of menu items and I'd reorder any of them at a future visit. Definitely worth the visit!
Alex Kelly
First time and we loved it.
Picked up some take out and ended up staying for the happy hour!
Gonzo treated us very well🍣

If you like sushi or seafood this is the best place to go in Minneapolis. The sushi is very simple, but so packed with flavor and not dressed up with extra sauces. Everything they served is traceable and sustainably source and you can tell in the quality and flavor. Kyle our waiter was amazing and made an already great experience impeccable. I will definitely be back with more people and highly recommend everyone give it a try.
Dionne Sims
The sushi is phenomenal and the ramen is too! Honestly some of the best Japanese food in Minneapolis, and the atmosphere is always laid-back and enjoyable.

I visited my new favorite sushi restaurant, Kyatchi again on Saturday, and as usual received impeccable service from each employee (Roy is a wonderful bartender) and out-of this world food. Each time I visit, I'm greeted warmly and with familiarity. It always feels good to be remembered by name, and I'm thrilled to have developed a relationship with their incredibly talented sushi chef Danny (he is the BEST). Upon requesting a chef's platter (trust in him, and you'll have zero regrets), we were treated to the finest nigiri and roll I've seen and tasted yet. Danny was kind enough to personally serve the platter to us, and I know his hand-selected cuts must have been the best in the restaurant that day.
I have to say that genuinely, this was the best sushi I've ever had (I'm no stranger to this delicacy and I had felt this way the last few times I've been in). The art in which the flavors are combined with perfect balance, the care to describe each piece along with the best order in which to eat them for optimal palate experience, and the time that was taken during a busy night to talk to my girlfriend and I left yet another incredibly memorable impression.
We were enjoying our food so much, and were so floored by the incredible flavors, that we couldn't help but talk about how amazing it tasted. We were so vocal about it, that our neighbors sitting at the bar decided immediately to order one of the Nigiri cuts we had been served. Needless to say, they agreed with our opinion!
If you haven't yet experienced this gem in South Mpls, I highly encourage you to treat yourself - I guarantee you'll be back!
Alona McCreary
Tasty sushi, interesting menu, and a phenomenal happy hour! Staff were delightful and happy to turn down the volume on the music a bit for a hard of hearing guest.
Zach Massa
Pretty exciting little spot. We were treated to the Chef's table when some one bailed on their reservation. Now I don't believe everyone would enjoy sitting back in the kitchen but it was a lot fun to watch all the excitement. The only disappointment was seeing the noodles for ramen coming pre-made out of a small plastic bag. The ramen was a little under whelming but everything else was delicious. I would highly recommend you be a little adventurous when you come here.
Padraic McGuire
We loved your St Paul shop. Pity it's closed.
I won't go into Mpls given the highly unstable conditions in the city. When the Clowncil & Prosecutors grow up, maybe then. :-(
Laura Carlson
This place is a gem. After living in cities with incredible sushi scenes, I was not expecting to find this spot in Minneapolis.
Found this place when I was laid up during the first wave of the pandemic and shut downs, and the delivery from here kept me in high spirits. Never missed. Food was well worth the money and consistent (apologies to the restaurant for using a delivery service). Now that I can visit in person, it’s become a once a month thing for me. I find myself craving the food and the experience given by the incredibly friendly staff. Faith has been my server twice and has been nothing short of a delight. Love how happy the staff is… 20 year hospitality veteran here, and restaurants can be draining to be in when you can see the staff over worked, with no connection to each other just trying to make it through. That has never been my experience here. Everyone is incredibly happy to sing songs together, chat, communicate what’s needed and help each other… it’s lovely. Get all the fish things, happy hour is a steal. Remember it’s quirky, casual and sustainable…. And like nothing else in Minneapolis.
Brenda Baker
Tried combination of things. Ramen which was delicious and traditional tonkatsu was delicious! both were very like meals we've had in Japan many times. I also tried a hot dog which was very unique and delicious . Appetizers and dessert made the meal complete. Service was fast friendly I would definitely recommend it
Lexie Opp
Best sushi in the twin cities. Service is always excellent, plus they have a lot of great dishes other than sushi. Ooo, and very tasty cocktails.
Maggie Poeske
One of our favorite neighborhood spots. The sushi quality is some of the best in the city and we love the ramen too. There is a great early & late night happy hour and the drink list is thoughtfully curated.
Patricia Bistrican
I want to start off by saying that our server Max was one of the best servers that I’ve encountered. Super helpful right from the start and extremely knowledgeable about the restaurant and it’s history. I was heartbroken when I found out that I couldn’t tip Max since the restaurant only accepted cash and I had none. Now that I got that off my chest, let’s talk food. My husband’s friend recommended this restaurant from the get-go. The first thing to take note of is the parking. To try and find an open spot here is like trying to find Waldo, horrible. After five minutes of searching, we found one decently close. The restaurant was pretty busy when we walked in and there was no host to greet us. We proceeded to the bar and met Max. We asked him for a seating outside and he happily obliged. It was happy hour so I decided to order a Whiskey Pineapple which tasted like pure pineapple juice 10/10 recommend! I ordered the Suzuki Pressed Sushi which both my husband and I rated as 11/10 and gobbled up in 2 minutes. My husband ordered the Iwana Specialty Roll which he rated a 3/10 due to it being too lemony and sweet which I concurred. Since Kyatchi is known for their hot dogs, we decided to split the Yakisoba Dog. The hot dog itself was slightly burnt which bothered my husband and he rated it a 7/10. I didn’t care for the burnt parts and I thought it was pretty good for a Japanese hot dog so I’d rate it a 9/10. The last food item that we could not leave without was dessert. Max told us about their special that was not on the menu, the plum pudding. It certainly lived up to the hype and we both rated it a 20/10 + a chef’s kiss 💋. Overall, we had a great experience and Max enhanced it! Next time, we will just order pressed sushi and lots of plum pudding. Sincerely, an Iowan tourist.
Nadia Janis
I like the space and waiters! The sushi itself is good, but not the best I’ve ever had. The drinks are yummy.
kevin sheehy
To tip or not to tip… The happy hour food was just ok. There was no tip line on the bill. They just add something like 18% to the check without saying anything. When I enquired they brought me a handout about the service fee. Owners need to up front about all these various posted or not posted. “fees” we’re all paying. And are employees getting a fare wage and medical or not? Etc etc…
MishaMPLS
Huge asset to the neighborhood. I usually get a variety of Nigiri while my partner usually goes with the fish of the day. A good beer selection with great Sake choices makes this a fantastic date or just Wednesday evening out.
John Carroll
I've now been to Kyatchi a number of times and find it not only to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in the twin cities but also one of the more unique eating spots you can come by. Whether dining on your own at the sushi bar, on a date with a special someone, or out on the town with your family, this place is a must if you're craving Japanese.
From their sustainable seafood, to the unique pressed-sushi, to their hand-crafted Ramen with pork belly, you really can't go wrong: everything is made with a passion for excellent food and with the highest quality of ingredients. You can taste the care each chef demonstrates in their cooking in each and every bite.
For me, one of the most surprising aspects of my visits is that even though I love love love sushi (and their sushi is amazing), it is rarely sushi that I crave when I am there. My advice would be to get a few things to share so you can experience items throughout the menu. The chicken kara-age is an absolute must: perfectly crispy, marinated chicken with a perfect touch of citrus and a mayo sauce that will make you smile (also, the Tofu Kara-age is also amazing if you're not into eating birds). Looking for something really unique? Try the Agedashi Tofu and be wowed by the super soft tofu and dashi broth. The Ramen is delicious and a must for the Ramen fan in you. I also can't not talk about the Hot Dogs. This place has a "Japanese Baseball Theme" and with it comes the hot dogs, all unique, all thoughtfully put together, each one delicious. I also really enjoy the Ika Shogayaki, translated to "not your grandma's calamari" (JUST KIDDING, that's not what it means but it should be!). This squid has been marinated to perfection in soy and ginger to give it the perfect flavors, and then grilled. It's fantastic and a must for you seafood lovers out there. Finish your meal off with some donut holes (you'll want to drink the caramel glaze, it's so good (nice one, Ben DeCamp)) or with the new black sesame seed panna cotta (incredibly unique and tasty, and something I would never order unless I was told. So good!).
I could go on and on about the donburi rice bowls, the pressed sushi, and sushi rolls. But you should totally hit this spot up for yourselves. They also have a great happy hour with a nice beer and sake selection.
One more thing to note: You get the feeling that EVERYBODY likes working here. The service has always been excellent for me, the chefs have come out and said hello, the line cooks and other servers always seem to be having the most fun, and I believe they raised the wages to support their employees. It creates a fun and inviting culture that makes you want to be apart of the team, and definitely helps you decide to come back for more.

K the lil lady was super appreciated with her most appreciated smiles!

I haven't eaten here, just gone to the bar. The staff is friendly. The decorations & menu look authentic to me & are influenced by the founder.
Davis Myers
Ordered some onigiri to go and was very impressed. Polite and knowledgeable staff made me feel comfortable both on the phone and in person when I picked up. The food was delicious, exactly as I hoped it would be.
Brian Kennedy
Great sushi and deep fry. Just nev5seems to be enough. Order plenty!
Doug Butler
Some of the best Sushi in the Twin Cities. Their late night happy hour is awesome. The staff is always friendly and helpful. One time a takeout order was messed up and the owner reached out to make sure everything was taken care of.
Len Sorstokke
Excellent food and service. (Cash tips only but there is already 19% added on prices but not obvious on the bill.)
Kathy Maxwell
This place was great. First, the sake flights are very well priced and have a nice variety of types to try. Second, the pressed sushi here was amazing. I have never had it before and the way it showcases the rice results in a delicious bite. I didn't get to try the hot dogs, but I will definitely be back to do so! This is not a place you go to get tempura rolls or other American fusion sushi, it is where you go to eat simply prepared but deliciously tasty sushi.
Schwanz Werner
I ate here for the first time the other night and loved it! It was very traditional with a twist! The staff were nice and helpful.
The food was great! We started with the tofu starter it was AMAZING! I’d get like 4 orders of that for a main course! I ended up getting the Ramen as a main course and it was simple but expertly made.
The only downfall of the restaurant was the noise level. It was loud enough to be noticeable, but you were still able to talk to people just fine.
I will definitely be back soon!!
Brian Sweet
We were looking for somewhere to get shishito peppers, since another of our favorite places stopped carrying them. They were delicious, as was the pork belly skewer. Would defunitely go again.
David Bergstrom
Fantastic! Three of us each ordered different entrees, and we were each delighted! Fresh, delicious, and unique foods! Good service, clean facility, and good prices!
C
Really great Sushi and traditional Japanese dishes! Prices are a little steep, but they definitely focus on quality over quantity which is fine, just be aware of that.
Abby Olker
I had never really liked sushi before, but this places was great! Their food is great quality and delicious which makes it an awesome place to bring people with no experience with sushi. They also have great happy hour deals, but because of that the restaurant can get a little crowded.
Shawn Walker
One of the best meals I've had in Minneapolis, and that's saying a lot! Fantastic sushi, wonderful drinks, and the hit dog was every bit as amazing as we'd heard. The service was also phenomenal, and the ambience was lovely, in a Japanese baseball sort of way. We'll definitely be back to explore the menu further!
Hoa Vo
Have an awesome sushi party for my birthday at this cozy and friendly place. The ingredients were fresh, well-chosen, and prepared. The staff was professional in taking orders and thoughtful in serving the courses. My best experience of sushi in the Twin Cities so far. Highly recommended.
Dan Farrell
The atmosphere was nice and upscale, with very nice chopsticks. The fish was good; it was expensive but not outrageously so. The grilled squid is very tasty. They don't feature the standard "fancy" rolls on the menu - i know they aren't super authentic. They did a great job catering to the 2 year old. A few beers on tap were a nice change for a sushi place. While there was something missing I couldn't quite put my finger on, I couldn't justify knocking it down a star.
Laura Chemler
This was one of our favorite casual date night spots to go pre-pandemic, and now it's one of our special treats to get take-out from. Their curry is delicious, sushi is so flavorful and fresh, drinks are amazing, but our favorite is their hotdogs. We always have to get at least one hotdog, and we always forget how filling they are and end up so happily stuffed after. Highly recommend giving them a try and exploring their whole menu.
Daniel Pi
The ambience and decor are cozy and sleek, the wait staff super attentive and nice. Never felt like I was waiting too long.
Their house sake was pretty good, a bit sweet.
They don't have a lot of variety for ramen, but their main one is pretty good, although a bit too salty.
However their sushi is definitely the stronger focus here.
Overall, a bit pricey but you do get quality here. Great for a more casual yet upscale modern vibe.
Karina G.
This place has not only delicious food, but fantastic, bright, fun, attentive staff to guide your through your delectable journey.
A few friends had recommended this place to me for excellent sushi, but I was a touch hesitant because their menu isn't as long as some other sushi places. I went with friends anyway, and lo and behold, I found my new favorite Uptown spot, and one of my favorite Japanese places in the Cities.
We ordered many things between everyone, so I got to taste a lot... and every single thing was fresh and delicious, from the sushi and sushi specials to the appetizers and main dishes. The ramen was the only thing I was slightly less impressed with, but the Cities is rather spoiled with Zen Box on Washington. It was still tasty, just not as mind-blowing as the rest of the food.
We got to sit at the chef's table in the back and watch our food be prepared, and that was really cool. We even exchanged some banter with the chefs, and got to talk about the food. If you have a group and you can snag it, I highly recommend it sitting there.
I am picky about which places I give five stars to, but Kyatchi definitely makes the cut. Fantastic food, trendy uptown vibes, and very fun, attentive staff. Try it.

I absolutely LOVE coming here for the yakisoba dog, nice intimate setting. You’re able to see the chefs cooking the food. Definitely recommend!
Lisa L.
Sustainable sushi with a diverse menu? Yes please. We loved the Hamachi Tataki and the Nezuko roll special. Yum! Can’t wait to come back.
Jillian Lenser
We went for the first time during happy hour and the food was so amazing we got more from of the main menu. Staff was so friendly and it was a great atmosphere. A quick lunch turned into a memorable dining experience!
Gillian Tarr
Most things we had were excellent. The sushi was delicious and was remarkable for how fresh it tasted. The agedashi tofu was nice and crisp on the outside with a very flavorful broth. The miso soup was somewhat saltier than we're used to, but that's a small thing. Service was friendly and quick.
Rachel Sporer
The sushi has been absolutely delicious every time, and i have enjoyed kitchen items as well. It isnt a quick place, however, so be prepared to wait. Even a take out order takes awhile but I think the quality of the simple rolls is so worth it. I also enjoy the cocktails.
I waited longer than quoted for my last pickup order (i understand, things happen and although i was slightly annoyed i would never hold one incident against a place) and the bar tender gave me a coupon for some sake to make it right. Thats what I call good service!
Mark Kivimaki
The server was very helpful, helping me figure out what sounded good on the menu and recommending the oshizushi which I tried for the first time. The food itself was delicious and the tea was a highlight. The decor in the restaurant is unique and creative. I sat at the sushi bar and it was fascinating to watch the chefs working. Overall a fantastic experience.
Paul Cheema
This place has amazing sushi. It was very traditional and not loaded with sauces or hot sauce etc to make it taste better. We went here randomly after selecting a sushi place from google reviews and it didn’t disappoint. The place is small so I’m not sure how it would be during busy times to get a table but we didn’t have to wait as it was fairly quite. I would eat here again.
Amy Friedman
The staff and management here are fantastic, the food is consistently great quality, and everything is sustainably sourced! My husband and I lived in Japan for a short time and are so grateful to have this restaurant in the community!
Mari Marks
Amazing Japanese style hot dogs. The best salmon sushi I've ever had. Great sake, and this was my first sake experience. Unique atmosphere. Great service. Expensive but worth it. Try the miso caramel cheesecake
fitguymike
Went with someone with food allergies. Staff went out of their way to accommodate and make sure food was safe for our friend. Sushi was fresh and everything was tasty.
Mika Ichikawa
SO delicious! Kyatchi always uses the freshest ingredients and they have the best staff <3
Joe Rongish
Excellent sushi and drinks. Service was perfect.
Noah Jeffrey
Delicious sushi, great tap beer selection, and super friendly staff make this place a must for Japanese fare in the Twin Cities. And happy hour from 4-6 PM every day! In short, highly recommended.
Bridget Lee
I have been to Kyatchi a handful of times now and every time is absolutely fantastic! The hosts and servers are always courteous, the food is delicious and so well done.
I truly appreciate their dedication to using responsibly raised/caught fish so they are the only sushi restaurant I'll go to in the Twin Cities area!
I also like that they have really good non-sushi items. The salmon skin salad is a must try!
Josephine Walker
They give you chopsticks right off the bat! No silverware at all. That's how I knew it was real. The service was great and very friendly and the food was amazing! The sushi you should definitely try is the one with pickled plum in it. That was an amazing mouth journey. Wonderful atmosphere as well!
Hanna Gilsvik
This place is our absolute favorite. Great happy hour and fresh, delicious ingredients in everything. Loving the new cocktail menu they rolled out as well! Have been many, many times and always a fantastic experience. Not only is the food great but the servers and bartenders are all genuine and passionate folks.
Bergit
This place is incredible. I am very new to sushi and the staff made me feel so comfortable despite my feeling like such a novice. They provided very helpful and genuine recommendations. I've visited twice and have enjoyed every dish I've tried. The cauliflower appetizer is delicious!
Marcellus Wallace
The sushi is very well made, and I applaud their sustainable efforts. To use human meat for sashimi is not only sustainable and inventive, but actually very delicious! It's nice to see a restaurant committed to solving the problem of overfishing, not only passively, but actively getting to the root of the problem.
Bernie Crump
I ordered the chirashi sushi. A bit heavy handed by Japanese standards, but very good. Kyatchi has a funky vibe with an upbeat staff. It features all the unique foods you’d expect to find at a baseball game in Japan. Good sake selection too!
Adam Hertzberg
Best ramen I've ever had!
Isaac M
This is my favorite place for sushi in the Twin Cities! It’s exterior wouldn’t necessarily lead you believe that, but it’s true. However, the sushi is more authentic. Rather than the Americanized rolls which often hide the fish flavor with sauces and other ingredients, Kyatchi’s definitely taste like the fish you’re eating. It’s not a great fit for someone who isn’t already a fan of sushi, but if you are, this is a great place to try - especially if you enjoy the more authentic taste. Reservations are a good idea - particularly for weekend dinners. You might be seated quickly, but it’s not a huge place, so if you’re on a schedule plan ahead.
Christopher Nicolai
Wow! Explosions of flavors in all kinds of creative dishes!
The service was not exceptional, but they may have just been hit with a rush. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because they were very nice.
Overall, this place is worth going to for the food, though. Will definitely be back!
Caupolican Nuñez
I see so many reviews with 5 stars that I am wondering if either this people had never had sushi before or I was in a different restaurant in an alternate dimesion.
I been to many sushi restaurants and this place was nothing special, their sushi was just ok, not horrible, not great, just average. however what was not ok was their prices. This place is way overpriced for the quality of the food they serve. Good thing they sell hot dogs because after two attempts at the sushi, I gave up and just ordered one.
The atmosphere was nice, the place is small and accessible, feels very warm and inviting, the location is good and the service was ok. Only reason I am not giving the place a single 🌟.
Maybe being hip and not great food is all it takes to get 5 stars today. 🤷🏾♂️
Nicole Bauer
Absolutely fantastic food. The service is great and they give you hot towels - something pretty much all other sushi places have stopped doing. It's small and comfortable without seeming too quaint. Also, the house sake options are hot, cold, and negori. All three are tasty, but the cold and having a negori option (and both being palatable) is almost unheard of.
I came here twice in two days because I loved it so much.
Oscar Zegarra
I would not recommend getting the ramen here. It took forever to make. Once I got it, I was very disappointed. The hard-boiled eggs was cold inside; meaning that it likely came from the fridge. The pork belly did not taste fresh either. I would recommend sticking to their Happy hour menu which has tasty bites (get the chicken) and good drink deals.
Chrissy Bevins
It was a very small and Quaint restaurant. The staff and service were perfect. We were looking for a good bowl of ramen that had a kids menu which is why we chose this establishment. Everything was pretty tasty, we loved all of the appetizers that we ate but the ramen is definitely lacking true Ramen qualities. Would go back to try some appetizers and maybe one of their sushi rolls in the future all though they aren't the typical sushi rolls that you would find elsewhere.
Ian
Absolutely great experience! Excellent regular and veggie ramens. Amazing sushi. Had hamachi nigiri and it was excellent. Really get ramen though, the veggie was amazing! My dad loved his regular ramen. He ordered what he thought was ramen but wasn’t. Tre was awesome and didn’t hesitate to get my dad regular ramen. Great Japanese beers and sake. All around excellent, you won’t regret it.
Dan Trewartha
We've been a couple times now and its definitely going to become a regular spot for us. I love the idea of good ballgame street food and sushi and I appreciate that they're conscious of where they source their fish. The staff is nice and helpful, and the food is delicious.. We've had a wide variety of sushi, the yakisoba dog, gyoza, and a couple other small plates, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. Cheers!
Edit: Well, this is officially our favorite spot in town. The best sushi around, I crave it very often. The staff is always top notch, good beers, apps and entrees. We've taken family many times and it's a good way to introduce some of them to Japanese food. If they don't like sushi, you can always get a rice bowl or a bomb hot dog.
Martin Hernandez
Excellent. Food was great, we had no reservation but they were able to accommodate us. No long wait for service. One server spilled soy sauce on the table, wiped it up efficiently and then kindly gave us two pieces of sushi on the house for any trouble that may have caused us ... which was no trouble at all. No wonder the place was packed on a chilly Minnesota evening. Great food and great service. What else does one need?
C J
They do not use spicy mayo. They focus on the fish. Great sushi and atmosphere. Favorite sushi spot.
They also feature hotdogs, soups and other great food! Their beef skewers are on point.
Its not the biggest joint, so there may be a wait during peak hours. Totally worth the wait, however.
Alexis Sheid Kleeberger
When we walked up with our 2 young kids I was skeptical because of how nice the place was, but I was pleasantly surprised. The wait staff were so accommodating and thoughtful. The food was fantastic and I was really impressed by the kids menu. Granted it was a Sunday early evening and not busy and I had to leave when my little one couldn't sit any longer, it really couldn't have gone better. We would definitely come back (hopefully for date night.)
Mary Johnson
We dined there on a Sunday evening, it was busy and the noise level was deafening.
We asked if they could turn down the volume on the music but didn’t help much so we opted to sit outside on the sidewalk in front of a bus stop on a busy street where it was much quieter.
The service was very friendly and our food came promptly.
I had the tonkatsu, delicious and such a generous portion that I brought some home. My husband had ramen which was also very good.
We probably won’t return because of the high noise level, maybe take out because great food.
Quianah Rains
Delicious, an uptown must try place I love showing friends. Some of the best ramen in the area as far as I know, top notch sushi and amazing authentic Japanese and fusion dishes. The yakisoba dog is so addictive I end up getting one every time.
Jessica Troup
The food and service was amazing! The atmosphere is inviting.
Ray Dehler
Had an awesome time, happy hour sake is killer, $5 glass for a good nigori is great. We got hot dogs per a suggestion from a friend. The hot dogs by themselves plain on a bun would be fantastic honestly. The house dog is delicious, the peppers were especially awesome. The avocado egg dog is nice and creamy cut with the slightly crisp hot dog. The really special dog is the Yakisoba dog, it's really a treat. I'd order all of them again however, can't wait to go back!
Jerry Vang
The food was mediocre. The Sashimi was okay but did not look as fresh as I hoped for--especially for the price paid. The Tonkatsu was bland and dry. Ramen had little flavor but the cheese cake had too much sweet. I say overall, the food is so-so. Our waitress was friendly, though.
Christine
Delicious food, and great service. However, I was disappointed with the amount of food received for the sashimi platter. For the price, I was expecting a bit more food. However, I have no other complaints and thought the place was great. Definitely check out the Sake flights if you're visiting for the first time!
Justin Wiertzema
Kyatchi is one of my favorite places to take my friends and family. It has a wide array of foods to choose from that should please most anyone. The food is excellent, but if I had to choose my two other favorite things, it would be the atmosphere and the workers. I have yet to have a bad experience and everyone who has been our waiter/waitress has been an absolute joy. Thanks Kyatchi and see you soon!
Christopher Klapperich
The value for your money is simply unbeatable. Prices are so low during happy hour vs the quality - comparable to more expensive restauraunts. quality higher than crave or Benihanas with a better sake selection than many sushi restaurants. Fresh, high quality fish. Food came out quickly and service was friendly but not overbearing. Presentation was neat and clean but not ostentatious. Ordered king salmon nigiri , negihama rolls, albacore Arctic char and sea bass nigiri,Fish and avacoado salmon rolls. Fish was flavorful and smooth. Slight but not unpleasant "Fishy" taste on the char and salmon but can't be avoided this far from the sea, still very good. Ordered prawn nigiri, creamy and pungent , very strong - then they served a 2nd course consisting of the head!
Rice was sticky and soft, not gummy. Music was too loud but I always say that. Went at 11pm during happy hour. Atmosphere was nice aside from music, muted colors and dim lights are nice.
Sake was very reasonable vs other restaurants. Only 5 for a glass of mokokawa nigori, rest of sake menu very reasonably priced.
I will likely have to adjust my other sushi reviews down by a star.
Jasdeep Singh
Great experience. From hot green tea to butternut squash soup to chef's sashimi and and a couple of rolls , everything was made delicious. Our server Hope was very accommodating as well. Certainly will visit again in the near future.
Nichole Downing
The restaurant is stylish and inviting. The staff were all incredibly friendly and attentive both to me and my eight-year-old daughter. They do have a kid's menu too, if yours aren't adventurous. Everything I ate was amazing and you could tell it was really fresh and well-prepared. My new favorite sushi place in Minneapolis!
Tim Ewest
Authentic Japanese, super.awesome hot dogs, and quality appraisers.
Jason Tautges
Our server was extremely familiar with all aspects of the menu. We took his recommendation and ordered a huge variety for the four of us to share. They even split the Ramen for us! The food all tasted very fresh was perfectly prepared. It was our first visit and we will be back soon. I read in a previous review that someone was mad because they spent $20 and were still hungry. This is unfair because it is not possible to be full off of $20 worth of sustainable sushi, not in America anyway. If you want to be full for cheap, order the Ramen or go hit a drive-thru for a bacon cheeseburger.
sarah em
It was spendy, but i enjoyed the sushi! If you want something authentic then come here.. We also ordered the hotdogs as well, which was interesting. The sake smelled and taste good. Bathroom is clean & staff were friendly. Took a while to find parking. But its all good. All in all 4/5
Tiffany Rupp
What a great little find. Skip the other sushi places and come straight here. It is amazing. The sushi chef knows what he is doing. We had the Iwana roll first and it is an explosion of flavor with some unique ingredients. The Yakisoba dog is great but very filling. The Ramen is great for those who don't like sushi. Oh and if you are a fan of miso give theirs a try. You can definitely tell it's made with care and not salt heavy like many other restaurants.
Nick Kirby
Went with my wife because she wanted ramen. Excellent food (I had a hot dog, which seemed weird at the time but it was delicious). Our server was sort of new, but she was very engaging and super chipper. We are moving near here in a couple of weeks, and will be certain to return.
Shane Paustian
Really enjoyed dinner here. My wife and I enjoyed dinner with a few friends. Not being from the area we didn't know what to expect. Our server Aby and everyone here were very helpful, kind and attentive. Aby was very patient with us and really helped make us feel comfortable. The food here is delicious. We had ramen and yakissoba, both were flavorful and cooked to perfection, and split a yakissoba dog to try, also delicious. Long story short give this place a try it's worth it.
Victoria Frost
This place was phenomenal. I am a huge sashimi addict. The cuts here were impeccable, the fish was absolutely fresh, and they serve it with wonderful soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi (some places aren't that great for sides). Staff was amazing, saki was amazing. New favorite spot. Shout out to Dani, the sushi chef, and his creation the "danimal" roll, definitely one of the best I've ever had.
bethany kelly
Can't say enough good stuff about Kyatchi! I haven't found another Japanese place with food that brings me back to Japan the way this place does (only exception would be UN's Dramen). The sushi is always so fresh and amazing, love the flying squid app and the momo skewer and chirashi bowl. Good happy hour specials too. Get some beer from Hitachino Nest or my partner assures me they gave the best sake selection in town!
Heather Wines
Usually I love this place, the food and service are fantastic, but today it was hard to enjoy my birthday dinner while 4 loud, messy kids were staring at me eating and the oblivious dad was just sitting there. At some point I guess it became a kids/family restaurant, which kind of ruins the mood when you want to have a nice dinner. So come for the food, and the service, but the atmosphere is lacking if it's filled with toddlers.
Brandon Schewe
Usually we absolutely love Kyatchi, the food, drinks, and service! Tonight was a disappointment, we came in for late night happy hour to get drinks and food after a night at the Orpheum. The food was outstanding like usual but the service was not there. We we're definitely more of a bother than anything, the bartender made it clear he was not happy with us choosing to dine and drink with him. Never asked how our food was or even really interacted with us (we we're sitting at the bar!), only came back to us when my drink was empty and by that time we we're ready to get the check. Needless to say this was not a good experience for us and like I said before we usually LOVE everything about Kyatchi.
John Barber
The pressed salmon and lemon sushi is a perfect balance of all that is good in this world. Rainbows literally shot out of my eyes when I took my first bite. The decor is really nice, comfortable and a bit whimsical to the Japanese love of baseball. The beef skewers are huge and delicious. The staff is very friendly and will stear you around this amazing menu. The menu has so much to offer from sushi to ramen to hot dogs. Who would not love this place?????
Brian Bergstrom
Nice place! Super friendly and nice lady server. Food was flavorful and complex. Had the seaweed salad, roasted cauliflower, and a bunch more. Some of the flavors were a bit overpowering for us, but you could tell they were fresh and made with care! Plus, it was packed at 1pm on a sunday.
Not sure if I would go back or not since we live 40 minutes away.
Anthony Giudice
The sushi was very good. The hot dogs are an unexpected delight and the art on the walls was absolutely awesome. Come for the food. Get the tonkatsu! Or the pressed fish sushi. They are both great. Ummm... Oh the green tea was very green and the beef was beefy.
Chai Chen
Great vibe! Love the latest trend of Japanese Street Food. Must try the skewers. Sushi is very fresh. For $25, you can get 5 different chef's choice sashimi with a bowl of rice! Next time, we'll give the hot dogs and ramen a try.
Linnea
My favorite sushi in the Twin Cities! Hot sake, tasty hotdogs, awesome daily happy hour, friendly and welcoming staff, specifically Roy and Ella have always been a pleasure! Do yourself a favor and go to this all-around amazing restaurant! :)
Amelia Anderson
First time at Kyatchi and it was sooo good! Daisy was our server and she was so helpful in navigating the menu and gave us extra time being newbies. Thank you for a fabulous time and delicious food! We will be back time and time again! Happy hour is also awesome!!!
Grace Chryssomallis
AMAZING!! Was practically drooling over this menu when we were looking for a place to eat, and it definitely delivered. Unique and delicious selection of sake, and the ramen was incredible. Can't wait to go back!
Ben
When I first opened the door, I felt I had stepped into a restaurant in Japan, especially the aroma! We had a 15 minute wait for a party of 6 on a Saturday around 8. My family all ordered something different so we could try something different. The great dishes were the Kara age, Ramen, Chirashi, Yakisoba and Mochi Cake. The ok ones were Tonkatsu and Vegetable Ramen. The Agedashi Tofu was really good as well. The proper way to eat it is to out the daikon radish and ginger into the sauce, mix then pour over the tofu. The dishes were delicious and very authentic! I'm half Japanese and have visited Japan numerous times. My Japanese mom approved as well. Highly recommended! The only negative is that portion sizes are a little small. Good happy hour deals also. I'll be back!
August Jennings
This is the spot, food is off the charts, service is top notch, drinks, decorations, atmosphere, kyatchi has it going on. I love the tonkatsu sandwich for happy hour. The mix of influence and the backstory is always a treat to explain to people. As far as sushi goes I would recommend the yellowtail roll, the shrimp head nagiri and tamago nagiri. All of the hot dogs are fun and tasty but the soba noodles or the avacado and egg hot dogs are my favorite. You can't really go wrong here, everything often leaves me happy and satisfied.
Alex Golimbievsky
Authentic, eclectic and straight up divine. Phenomenal dishes, great happy hour menu and outstanding service (looking at you, Daisy). This place hits all the right spots, making it an instant favorite. High notes? Try the kara-age (fried tofu), chirashi (sashimi plate) and pork ramen.
Richard Tavarez
Friendly staff, great responsibly sourced food, and easy to get to location.
Menu is fresh and has lots of options; Even hot dogs!
The atmosphere is great for conversation and nicely lit. Lighting Creates a cozy atmosphere.
Definitely coming back.
Elizabeth Olsson
It's a cozy place, you can sit at a table or the bar, but it doesnt have a "bar and grill" vibe. The servers are very kind and knowledgeable. The food was a little more expensive than I was expecting, we spent about $20 per person excluding tip. However the food was delicious, this might be a place to go on a special occasion rather than a quick supper based on the price.
Nicholaus Larson
Relaxing music, amazing atmosphere. Great staff and the best sushi in the metro. The best suggestion I can offer is to hit this place during happy hour (4pm-6pm and 10pm-midnight.) for some awesome deals on food and drink.
Andrew Loo
Would recommend making a reservation as they have minimal availability on the weekends. Service was great and I loved the kinoko (mushroom) hot dog. There was a nice bite to the hot dog and a good amount of mushrooms on top. We also got the yakisoba dog which was a little too salty but still good.
Phillip Nguyen
My wife and I went here for the first time trying to get our ramen fix on Tuesday night...( everywhere else closes at 10) one of the best ramen in twin cities that open till 12. Ramen was Packed with flavor, charred charsiu, and eggs were on point. We sat at the bar and our bartender was awesome. ( gentleman with the hat). Highly recommend ramen lovers to give this a shot. Peace out.
Benjamin Rattle
The food here is delicious. They have a lot of variety as well: ramen, kebobs, sushi and nigiri/sashimi, and even hot dogs (I'll try them one day). Always have had a great time here and our server yesterday, Kyle, was very charismatic. He helped us out with ordering drinks and food. For some of us that don't usually like sushi, he found some good options that just might change their minds.
Claire Tenscher
I expected more, it is my fault for ordering ramen at a general Japanese restaurant. The noodles weren't fresh and the veggies were unappetizing. The broth flavor was fine but it didn't have that wonderfully fattiness I've come to expect from great ramen. The appetizers were alright - we had the fried tofu and a triple veggie combo. I liked the fresh lemon squeezed onto the tofu but the mayonnaise dipping sauce did not work for me. I would go again to try the tofu but in I think this restaurant is more for the fan of 'low brow,' for lack of a better word, Japanese food. See: hotdogs on the menu, mayonnaise dipping sauce on or with many of the items.. And, don't order the ramen, my friend's dish was apparently quite good.
Anne LaFrinier-Ritchie
I've been to both the St Paul and Minneapolis locations and LOVE THEM. I've had sushi in some big cities (Chicago, LA) and the quality of Kyatchi matches or exceeds any other place I've been. LOVE the ebi mayo. Will definitely go back again as I am able!
Austin Velishek
After spending time in Asia and just eating lots of Asian food in general, this is seriously some of the BEST food I've ever had! We split a bowl of ramen and sashimi. I couldn't help but exclaim how great it was. The ramen had the very best broth you'll ever taste. Along with the atmosphere and lovely service, you won't be disappointed!
Noah Levine
It might feel pricey here, but it's a no-tip establishment, so you're paying the same at the end.
Abigail Mannelin
Went to Kyatchi to celebrate my partner’s birthday. Felt the same way I do every time (with visits often years apart.) The service was good, the space is nice, the food is just ok. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but I think it just isn’t flavorful enough?
Ariel Snow
CELIAC SAFE!!!!! I am celiac and was diagnosed a few years back. Since ive been exposed badly a few times my sensitivity has gotten worse. Because of this I can detect ANY gluten in a dish. Sadly I am rarely able to go out and eat in fear of exposure. I saw this place online and gave it a shot. The food was AMAZING, presentation is fantastic, very cozy comfortable dinning area, the waitress provided great service and quick! I had NO REACTION TO THE SUSHI! finally! a place I can actually eat out at!!!!!! My boyfriend had a ramen dish and was in complete heaven, I've never seen him so happy to eat food lol Try this place out when you are in the area, it is delightful and our new favorite.
Joshua LaMere
The sushi here makes up for the too-hip crowd. Had the late night happy hour sushi, & I was incredibly pleased with my order. Low lights, cool interior, great neighborhood. Nighthawks is right across the street as well as Five Watt Coffee.
Justin Emil
This is a chef run restaurant. Not everything is perfect bit they try real hard to impress. All the bad reviews were made by people who don't understand that fact. Spicy mayo doesn't belong in sushi lady. My only complaint T is a bit pick at best and that is that I find their sushi rice to be overcooked bit like I said. Not picky. It is on par with the top restaurants in the city when it comes to rice but as I stated earlier most of the idiots in this town only care about spicy mayo. Put the Laab on the menu please!
Danae Bye
Talk about yum! Love the happy hour and normal hours. Great food and a unique list of drinks. I haven’t tried many things because I get stopped by the ramen every time and say how can I stray??
Patrick Thomas
I love this place, I've always had great food and service. I love experiencing the different sake and sushi as well as Japanese cultural takes on American classics - hotdogs, for example. Super fun.
David Thomas-Jensen
Nice neo sushi/bar. They got the whole spectrum of Japanese food and clean simple delicious sushi. Tried it for the high marks on Yelp. And it's location in regards to a meeting. It was good. They have interesting cold saki flights which I would have tried if I wasn't craving hot. (It was very cold out) I would claim it as a favorite sushi spot. I would claim it as a satifactory ad clean sushi spot with an intimacy and elegance of atmosphere worthy of a date.
If you live in the city and your date wants sushi or Teppenyaki, this would be a good spot to bit.
Cayli Caruso
Amazing food and drinks. We will definitely be returning soon. Happy hour is great value. Fun ambiance and fantastic service

Great food. Happy hour is great

I was very excited to go try Kyatchi after reading about it on Eater. Hai Hai and Martina were in the same post. They are both marvelous so I figured this should be the same. I was a bit disappointed. The hot dog was ok, but award winning... I wouldn't agree. I'd say get one at the ball park or even Can Can Wonderland. The ramen was supposed to have pork belly. There were two tiny bites and that was all. Then came the chicken meatballs. They were good, but served with a load of rice that wasn't worth eating once the meatballs were gone. I also got a small salmon sushi roll. It was fine. As for a beverage, the lemonade was very sweet and sour. It was very tasty. The bad... the server was basically not there. I should have called my order in. After two items he dropped off the check. Ummm I wasn't done ordering. Then once I was ready to go he needed to be flagged down. He then apologized for not being around much. He said they were short 2 servers. Maybe he should have started off by explaining this?
I really wanted dessert, but this was such an ordeal that I waited to eat dessert once I got home. I didn't have more time to waste.
Kendra Strode
Kyachi is a fantastic place to get food food that doesn’t require going into downtown. The sushi is wonderful and the wait staff are friendly and helpful. We love the mix of beer, sake, sushi, ramen and hot dogs! While there may be places where you can find better versions of the individual elements Kyachi is a great and accessible mix. Definitely a local favorite.
Leah Kann
We shared some sushi and a hot dog. At first I was hesitant to get a hot dog, but the one with the soba noodles on it was delicious! The sushi was also amazing!
Anna
We come here a lot because the food is delicious and the happy hour prices are great. Kyatchi is our go-to restaurant because it’s the one place that everyone in our family is consistently happy to go to. I also love how the staff have started to recognize us. Also the service is always really excellent.
Christopher Popov
High quality cuisine. The price is very fair when you hit up happy hour.
Brian McLean
Outstanding Japanese plates and made to order sushi! I dream about Kyatchi!
Great environment in downtown St Paul right next to CHS field. Stop in before or after a game.
Owner has been working everytime I've been there and strikes up interesting conversations. They hold true to the expectations of and are respectful to there predecessor in that location, Tanpopo.
Highly recommend.
Alix Magner
Happy hour at Kyatchi is a delight. Kure-Aga, seaweed salad, salmon avocado rolls and the combo for the kids. Great prices and very high quality. Family favorite. It can be a little loud on the weekends.
Dee Dredge
Absolutely delicious food! Love this little place!
Andrew Meggs
This place is so cool! A super trendy Japanese restaurant in south Minneapolis, Kyatchi offers a wide variety of food, ranging from the regular stuff like delicious sushi and ramen, to more off the wall stuff like Japanese hotdogs. The service was excellent, and the decor was super funky and I was digging it. Would recommend.
Draco K
An absolute joy. They know Sake. They know food. They know just being good people. Kyle is an amazing, knowledgable, conversational server who has excellent reccomendations. Dani is sushi chef that cuts with precision and is easy-going and his sushi roll, the Danimal, is a must try. The owner has developed the restaurant with a nod to Japan and its traditions, and a beautiful but relaxing environment. This is my sixth time there and there isn't anything I've disliked on the menu. Go ahead, come here and treat yo self.
Jennifer Davis
Imagine having rollerbladed 10 miles at dusk and the hunger is insatiable. All I want is ramen, I can't think of any other food. This late night craving hits and all my regular spots are closed and i'm fading fast ... what's a girl to do but try the place open until midnight. We pull up after 10pm and this place is poppin. Patio seating - full, indoors - a few open seats. All good signs. And I was not disappointed. The ramen (even though I took it to-go in poor form) was rich, satisfying and HOT - just like I like it. Kudos Kyatchi.
Adam Morrison
Small sushi spot with an energetic atmosphere. Great happy hour program. Impressive tap selection given the limited space. Sushi tasted very fresh. Would come back for sure
shane Burgess
I really enjoy sushi, kyatchi has sushi. It would be better for a group where some people like sushi and some don’t, as the non sushi items were more inspiring. Surprisingly the hot dogs are very good!
Terry West
Love it love it love it! I am going to try to go to this restaurant every time I go to the Twin Cities. I went here for the first time, with my daughter this week, while in MPLS for a couple days. So glad we picked Kyatchi.
The food and the service were absolutely perfect. The seaweed salad was so delicious. I like that their meat is from ethical sources too. Looking forward to my next trip to the cities so I can revisit Kyatchi!!!
Kenny Hubbell
My wife and I are big ramen people and have found ourselves coming back here over a dozen times. I’ve never gotten anything but the regular ramen because it’s just so good. The pork belly is the best I’ve had out of any of the other ramen places in town, and I always get an extra egg. It also helps that they’re super nice and accommodating. I highly recommend giving this place a try.
Tera Thomas
Food and service was amazing. Will be back!
Tarah Knox
Loved everything. The food. Our server. The atmosphere.
Peter Centner
High quality fish and great service. 4 stars because it was a little pricey for the specific cuts of fish and the portion sizes of the Maki compared to other comparable TC sushi restaurants.
Jess Bergman Tank
The happy hour Chirashi is my favorite thing ever. Get it . The rest of the happy hour is great as well and it is daily. Staff is extremely knowledgeable about gluten containing items and have available soy sauce and other gf extras .
John Jameson
Considering I'm deathly allergic to fish, they were very accommodating and I still ate so many rolls! The veggie rolls were amazing and kept ordering them non stop! Will defently be back!
victor saldivar
Came here with a friend for dinner and was thoroughly impressed with my veggie ramen. I was a little upset we weren't brought our towels, like other authentic Japanese restaurants, but it was still well worth the visit.
Katie Bosch
Gave Kyatchi another shot last night (we had eaten there some time ago when it first opened and just hadn't been back since). This time around it was INCREDIBLE! The menu has been refined, and while still authentic, it's quite unique to other Japanese restaurants. My husband and I tried most of the items the bartender recommended (Gyoza, the grilled squid, the yakisoba hotdog, (and of course had to pepper in some sashimi). We went back for a second reound of the gyoza. Mike gave stellar service. We will keep this one in our neighborhood rotation now, for sure.
Melissa Cole
The sushi, ramen, and curry were good, but nothing spectacular. We felt like the sushi plates were a tad small for the price. Overall an enjoyable place!
William Owen
Nom nom nom nom nom it is awesome to have good sushi so close to my neighborhood. This place is a little gem. The staff are super friendly and attentive. You must try the scallop sushi and sashimi. The sushi options are limited because of their dedication to freshness and sustainability. I recommed ordering the omakasa (chef's choice) and then after that just start ordering extras till you feel completely full (should only take a minute). Also, one of my favorites is the mackarel sashimi.
Novy O'Connell
I liked that it was sustainable. I wouldn't recommend the tofu dish.
Orrin Dabney
It used to be difficult finding a ramen shop anywhere that could come close to even the worst ramen in Japan. That, thankfully, has changed!
With the new excitement around ramen and Japanese foods, we're finally at the point where folks who've never had Japanese ramen can begin to experience it without leaving the country.
Kyatchi's expression on the classic dish is something to try. The broth is vibrant with depth, the noodles texture and thickness match the soup perfectly.
Once the bowl had been placed in front of you, it's very difficult not to just dive in mouth first.
I think the chyasyu (pork belly in ramen) needs some work, but other than that one gripe, I can't think of any other reason why you shouldn't go.
Try it, you won't miss the few dollars.
N S
Literally the best sushi I’ve ever had. Flavors unlike any other sushi restaurant in the Twin Cities area. Drinks to match. Can’t wait to tell everyone to come here.
Aaron Godin
I've been coming to Kyatchi for about two years now, and it is easily one of my most beloved spots in Minneapolis. I've come here with family, friends, and everything in between and always have an amazing meal. The staff are so relaxed and helpful. Love this place, and craving it this very second!
Julie L
Great food and service. Everything is labeled for GF and other dietary needs. Smaller portions, so plan to order a few plates to share!
Nathan Lafferty
Excellent fish, excellent service. I was super skeptical about the hot dogs but WOW — do recommend.
Be warned, portion sizes are very “Japanese” — small.
Erin Christey
Great take-out on a night we needed to stay in. Perfect ramen (OMG that pork belly chunk). Savory, slightly spicy sauce on the chicken wings. Staff was VERY friendly with the takeout order. AND they use ALL compostable containers!!! 🌟 …
Sam Campbell
One of the best restaurants we've ever been to! Our waiter was super nice and provided his culinary and historical knowledge on several dishes. Everything was amazing and worth the price!
Rebecca Koch
The sashimi was fine, but the miso soup was incredibly lacking in body... It tasted like they used weak dashi and white miso. Seriously subpar. Also, the tamagoyaki roll was as dry as bread. No, I wish I was kidding. It felt like it'd been put in a warm place for too long, instead of being made fresh. You can make better miso soup and tamagoyaki at home.
Robert Hooper
I think I've had almost everything on the menu, definitely my go to sushi spot.
Kyle is the best server I've had in the twin cities as well.
Great experience.
Melissa Annen
Had dinner and drinks, wonderful. Staff was quick and friendly. It was clean and had a cool atmosphere.
Judy
Reminds me of Tapas style when it comes to portions but the quality and taste behind eat bite is fabulous.
We ordered the Tontoro, Scallops, Tataki roll, Yakisoba hot dog, and pressed Sake Sushi.
If there was one thing to warn you, it's warm in there. I'm not sure if their A/C was down or if they don't have A/C but be ready.
Heidi Schermerhorn Nordine
Reasonably priced sushi and such with very friendly--even encouraging--staff. A good place to wander through the menu, dabbling into a dish or two and ordering more as you fancy!
Kyle Boldt
Best seafood in town, unmatched quality sushi, amazing service, superb sake selection. It is a can't miss for any sushi enthusiast. I will be back again and again
[A-za-z]*
Good food, delish desert, pleasant atmosphere and late hours. Just what I needed.
Cole Sarar
We just stopped for drinks on the patio! Lovely.
Lucas Havens
Where else can you get sushi and hot dogs? The Yakisoba Dog is where it’s at. Happy Hour deals are also stellar. Show up early or make a reservation.
Josh Disher
Great neighborhood Japanese food. From skewers to sushi to Japanese hotdogs. Its a great little local spot. Good beer selection too. Food until midnight too!
Vas Littlecrow Wojtanowicz
This place is absolutely amazing. My husband had the flying squid and several different kinds of rules. This had to have been the most tender squid. I have ever eaten in my life.
Howard Sturrup
I think I may have tried something I could have made easily at home some roasted vegetables with quinoa I was not impressed . My friends burger looked far more satisfying many of the salads sounded good may try those next time .
Jon Reek
Simple. Elegant. Delicious. Recommended for people who prefer sushi that emphasizes the fish, as opposed to burying it under a million ingredients.
Shericka Dyer
It was my first time there. I stopped in for a glass of wine. I didn't get to eat but I plan on going back to try a few items. The bartender was very nice. I will definitely visit again soon.
Emma Engberg
Pretty brilliant menu that gives respect to Japanese food and sushi, and a unique and great experience. Best quality sushi in the whole twin cities.
Andrei Semenov
Good Sushi, reasonable prices and located right on eat street. I haven't had anything here except for Sushi/Sashimi but what I've had has been very good if not a little bit pricey.
Chris Dunlap
Not your typical Sushi bar, but don't let that deter you. The options and service were excellent. The Pork belly is a must-try.
Emily Davey
The service was impeccable, very delicious food and a lot of variety. My only complaint would be that it is expensive for the little portion sizes.
Get the beef skewers with sauce! So delicious!
Nick Lanners
Everything here looked great. The dim lighting, lack of TV and hardly noticeable background music were all excellent too. Fun Japanese small bites and fun, high quality hot dogs.
Aaron Vail
My wife and I came here for one of our earliest dates and we're just talking about how much we enjoyed it. We had a variation of a hot dog that blew us out of the water. We went to see a choir group in St. Paul after that and as they say, the rest was history. We'll be back for some reminiscing soon!
Shelby Sanborn
Incredible traditional Japanese and Japanese inspired food. The uni from Japan was the best I've ever had.
David Johnson
Sushi + Hotdogs= Bliss. Amazing sushi and amazing hotdogs. A true restaurant of the future. Great service, good wine list, and very nice happy hour.
Robert Ilijason
Pretty good Japanese place with a wide variety of food. The staff is helpful and the place is clean. But the food is unfortunately only ok. Well prepared, but too salty.

Amazing sushi always. And great special menu items. Last time I visited, they had a beef heart tartare that was to die for.
Joel Hobart
Outstanding sushi. Interesting and well curated taplist. There is a parking lot adjacent to the building, but it's small, so plan on street parking if you're driving.
Elizabeth Leming
Great menu and food. Place is small and loud. You'll need a reservation, but don't plan on an intimate dinner here.
Bring your kids, and friends and appetite
Alanna Ebertz
Went out for a last minute dinner and it was fantastic! Our server, Ella, was just perfect and the food was just as amazing as always!
Teresa Schneider
Great food, but was disappointed when our appetizers and entrees (4 of them) all arrived at the same! If you order multiple courses here make sure to have your server space them out. Date night was over in 45 minutes.
Janell Moskonas
Enjoyed our visit. Staff was helpful and kind. Had great beer selection on tap. Had a lovely late lunch for 4 of us and everything was delicious.
Brant Egertson
We celebrated a birthday with a large group. The staff was great and our service was very accommodating. It took 20 min beyond our reservation to be seated however.
Ian McClintock
The ramen is delicious, the staff are nice, and in Mondays you can get a bowl of ramen and a beer for $13 with the Lucky 13 special. Which is a good deal.
Simon Anderson
The best sushi place I've ever been anywhere, not just in MN. Sustainably sourced also. Check out their happy hours!
Adriana V Jeffrey.

Had a really nice experience here. Good variety of food choices, The skewers are really good. Can be a little more on the expensive side, but it's I think it's justified with the quality.
