Reviews of Jefe Urban Cocina
Lydia Venjohn
Yummy authentic Mexican food! I ordered a red sangria (wow!!) and the sampler appetizer first which was fun to try all the different salsas and dips. Then for the entree I ordered the shrimp tacos– mouth watering. The vibe inside was a little more romantic/moody than I was expecting with dark lighting and more of a candle lit experience. Although I didn’t come here with my significant other, I still enjoyed visiting here with a friend! It was not overly crowded and service was pretty quick which was nice. Would come again!

Jefe Urban Cocina offers tasty food in a large indoor and outdoor patio space. We arrived at 6:00PM without a reservation (in a party of 7) and were able to be seated with a minimal wait. I tried the Jefe Margarita, which was not that flavorful or substantial for its $13 price tag. For dinner, I ordered the Barbacoa tacos. The dinner comes with two tacos that are very tasty and also have a spicy kick. Would definitely recommend although you may want to try some appetizers to fill you up a bit.

Beautiful restaurant. Food was ok, everything was a little one note. I like spicy food but everything seemed to be a little heavy on that end. The cocktails however were very good, would definitely come back for some ceviche and margaritas to sit on the patio over looking the river. Nice spot.

Food was good. Tried the Camarones, the corn salsa was delicious. Also tried the enchilada, I really liked the crispy version, although the pork stuffing was a little dry for my liking. The place was super busy on this Friday evening, so had a little bit of wait for the food. Staff were were great, and great environment with patio seating. Overall good experience.

A great patio and great location! A fun spot to stop for a good Mexican meal. We sat on the patio and watched the many interesting people and dogs walk by. Very good drinks and beer selection. A few tasty dessert options as well. A very cool seating area inside for cooler weather.

The patio is a great place to enjoy drinks and dinner! The bar and inside has an awesome urban industrial feel to it and the drinks are tasty! The food was good with some unique dishes that we enjoyed trying!
Javier Barberena
Nice location along the river. The restaurant is big and it has outdoor seating. The service is great. The food is tasty and priced reasonable. There is street parking, but it could be hard to find a parking spot during busy time.
L
2.5 rounded up to 3. The tacos were really dry (both meat and taco). It felt more like a bar than a taco Mexican food joint so just probably won’t be returning.

Love the flavors of this place! Incredible dishes and delightful staff. The cocktails were wonderful as well. My mom is from out of town and when she comes to visit, she insists that we come here at least twice per her visit. Sometimes two nights in a row. Food was really good they must have a really good Chef 👨🍳

Extraordinary food coupled with a brash and vintage atmosphere made the evening a delight. You’ll be struck by the friendliness of the staff and by the age of the space. It’s been relatively untouched so that Jefe doesn’t seem to overrun their footprint. It’s a humble and relaxed corner for exactly what you’d expect; good food, good drink, and an atmosphere that isn’t too loud, showy, or dishonest. It’s honest and doesn’t ask for too much attention. That’s what makes the experience worth your time and tastebuds.

Love the atmosphere here. The food is great. Not many vegetarian entrée options but the few they have are delicious. The drinks are well made, unique, super tasty & strong. We have a great time every time we go. Also great for small & larger parties.

Jefe has always had great food and service. Unfortunately my most recent visit did not have the best service. My party observed the waiter talking in the back and not being attentive to the fact that we’ve been waiting 25+ minutes to order our entree. I asked the hostess/supervisor for help with getting him to take our order. He passed by us to give another table something with no communication and eventually took our order. My table was interested in ordering more drinks and desserts but we were never followed up on after our entree order. Not the best service experience.
Robby Dube
Excellent location, spacious outdoor seating and good food. The portions are a bit smaller as are the margaritas (but the pours are generous).
Darlene Huff
This is our first time to Jefe and I hope not our last. Our food was amazing from appetizers to the Ahi Tuna special to the steak special. But the best was Chef Charlie coming to check in and our server Iris was so kind and attentive. Great place for a special event or date night too.
Scott Stillman
A perfect meal, from beginning to end. Everyone on the staff was very friendly and accommodating. There were good choices for a vegetarian. The food and drinks were extraordinary and flavorful. it was just an ideal experience, thanks!

Nice spot to go at night with a group of friends or a date night. The menu is very limited and pricey, for the portion size. The server was nice and accommodating, but I was disappointed with his recommendation for the ceviche dish. The tequila flights were the best deal for alcohol, 4 shots of tequila for like $20 or something. Would definitely return in the future for a night cap/ late night snack. Not a place for me to visit if I’m very hungry.
Maple Sota
The food isn't authentic Mexican, but wasn't bad either. New take on Mexican dishes. However, I do recommend the mango salsa. Unusual take on Enchiladas. More like flautas with rice and small portion of pinto beans instead of refried beans with three slices of radishes on top. Just plain weird. 😂😆😅 …

Ok, so I turned, ugh, 40 yesterday, and our meal at Jefe really ramped up my spirits. Folks, they have mezcal!!! + tajin rim = best margarita I've had outside New Mexico. Awesome sauces and salsas; we got the Jefe Sampler to start and loved mixing and matching and adding them to our meals. The sikil p'ak and mango habanero were our faves. Mahi mahi and birria were quite good (pro tip: get a side of mango habanero for the mahi), and the ambiance of the place is next level. Great service too. Really glad this place exists, and can't wait to go back.

Dinner Atmosphere was amazing!! Very cozy, candles everywhere! Food was very delicious (Duck tostadas, steak fajitas, shrimp tacos). We loved the homemade sangria! Liquor was a little too strong for our taste(mojito, jefe Margarita). Price was a little high, but definitely worth going on a date night, or close friends dinner.

Such a charming place to eat! We sat on their patio, complete with a view of the river and the brick road. The ambiance is wonderful and the service was super kind! We ordered ceviche, shrimp tacos, and some yuca fries (highly recommend!). Everything was very delicious, fresh, and made very well. Definitely check it out for either a light meal or a full dinner.
Sushma Ambekar
Easily one of the best Mexican places I have been to! The food was slightly expensive, but totally worth it. I had the Enchilada with no meat and it was perfect. The overall ambience of the place is romantic and beautiful. It was a great dining experience. The service was fast and they were very polite. The flan is a must try.

Came here on a Friday night. It was busy but the service didn’t suffer. I was impressed with server’s punctuality. The food tasted great but was a tad expensive even during happy hour. The menu has a good selection of contemporary Mexican food. Full bar was nice. The patio is in an great setting close to the banks of the Mississippi.
Stefanie Henjum
The food and drinks were delicious. It was also a really nice ambiance and great to be able to have conversations without having to yell.
George Gonnella
Update: just went again 2 days after reopening. The tacos were stunning. Bartender made good drinks but surprisingly unfriendly for having been shutdown so long. Pictured are the pulled pork..
Really legitimate and authentic mexican food. Shrimp taco was amazing as was the brisket taco. Good service, although just a tad to dark inside..
John Daniel
We had an amazing dinner here last weekend. The service was great and the atmosphere was incredible. Our compliments to the chef because the food was outstanding as well.
Kim De Moraes
The restaurant is situated in a fairly new St. Anthony's area/district. We wanted a seat on the patio and were lucky enough to get one after a 15 minute or so wait. Originally it was going to be a minimum of a 40 minute wait. The restaurant is decorated beautifully and has dim lighting, however plenty of natural night is let in. Everything on the menu looked delicious. I chose the carnitas tacos. They were amazing and would order them again. We saw more of the food runner than our server and had to ask for our drinks to be refilled on more than 1 occasion. I understand they were busy, however, he should have paid a little less attention to the table full of women and more of the other parties of 2 and 3 such as ours. Overall, enjoyed the restaurant and would return.
kate gergova
Everything about that place is good. Creative ambiance inside, relaxing atmosphere outside, good food and good beer. The tortilla was feeshly made, waiter was attentive and overall, there is a sense of peace and tranquility. All while it is vibrant and brimming with smiles and attentive conversations where people are involved, often leaning slightly into the direction of the other person. Charmingly cozy yet stylish. Prices are reasonable too.
SAKSHI GOPAL
Really nice place to spend a dinner afternoon / evening ... On the patio, watching life move by.
The food is good, typically Mexican and so are the drinks.
Good vibe, would have loved some music...
The server was great. Really good recommendations.
Had the Jefe Margarita, a tecate beer with a shot of tequila, the shrimp Diabla, the grilled corn and an Indeed IPA.
All good. Really good....

I had been wanting to try the food and drinks here ever since I seen the patio while shooting photography down the street earlier this summer. When I finally got the chance to go back and try it recently, it didn’t disappoint. Everything from the appetizers to the drinks & meal itself were uniquely prepared and flavored. Most of all, It was all quite tasty! The chips (tostadas) come out round which you break into smaller sizes and dip into the various salsas they have. I HIGHLY recommend getting the salsa flight of (6) flavors as they are all equally unique. Our table couldn’t get enough of this appetizer. I had the (Elotes) corn on the cob with melted cheeses & seasoning for my meal. It was nothing short of amazing. Which is pretty significant because well, it’s corn on the cob. I even shared it with the others at the table who also raved about it. We all had various drinks which everyone enjoyed throughly. The various sangrias and Smokey Paloma were nothing short of delicious. The restaurant atmosphere is great, the decor & overall ambience phenomenal. The only way our trip could have been better is if you could have seen the water from the patio. Unfortunately the brush and buildings across the cobblestone road make it impossible to get a view like that. Also a word of advice, this place is huge and seems to always have a full house so I recommend calling ahead. And the parking is atrocious. Take an Uber if you can.
Patrick Broderick
We got the Chorizo Tacos, which were good, but as you can see in the picture, I am less than half way through them! There were 2! For $10! Good thing we ordered a side and appetizer too otherwise we would have had to whip something up at home because we're starving. Service was fine. The place is pretty and the view (of the Mississippi) is fantastic but $60 for a couple of drinks, (literally ONLY) a couple of tacos and an appetizer is..pretty excessive.
Shane Oborn
Absolutely amazing experience here. From the amazing Tortas to the friendly staff to the custom design and art. We were blown away that we hadn't heard of Jefe until now. Can't wait to go back!
Andrea Evans
My son and I pre-,gopher-gamed at Jefe and it worked out well! The atmosphere is charming, romantic and subdued with the candlelight which is a perfect break from the stress of today. Pair that with the intoxicating smell of corn tortillas, a river view, geat service and fabulous Mexican food and you have a a real winner!
Anna Hendricks
Absolutely incredible meal! Very knowledgeable about gluten free options. The best part of our meal was the absolutely incredible service from our amazing waitress, Iris. She was so friendly and made our experience so much fun!
Dave Burton
Nice place by the river to enjoy a cocktail or tequila flight - you need to ask for the menu to get the list. The food was good - especially my wife's ahi tuna ceviche, my smoked pork torta was nicely constructed with good flavors but the bread was kind of a let-down. It tasted like a big hot dog bun. I would have preferred something with a little more chew and flavor
Maggie Adams
Absolutely amazing tacos - best I've ever had. I get the shrimp tacos and sub for chicken tinga - I'm weird, I know but wow is it ever amazing. Mango habanera sauce is outstanding as well. The crema did taste a bit yogurt-e if I had anything to critique but other than that DAMN this place is good. Cute spot too!
Tata Jones
Stopped by to have a Drink. Great place architecture in side is very interesting. Service was good. Only gave it 3 stars because we didn't have food
Bill Lynch
Our party of 8 had a very enjoyable evening at Jefe. Fantastic service from Bailey, solid drinks and great food. All in their cool setting on Main street. All together a great evening!
kendra Bremer
The waitress and waiters seriously know their stuff here!! Very well trained and friendly - food was amazing too. Their flight of salsas was fun to try - all so good! Got to enjoy the patio while eating my carnitas and margarita. Looking forward to going again
Laura Hupp
Great food and drinks. Service was pretty slow. We came in on the first nice Saturday of spring, so of course the patios everywhere were packed. We settled for seats at the bar here. We got our drinks ordered fairly quickly. It took a little while to get them, but they were quite good! Our food is what really took a long time. While we were waiting to eat, various people came to the bar to get drinks and it seemed like they struggled to get the attention of the bartenders. The food was pretty tasty when it arrived. Overall I'd chalk up the slow service to the sudden appearance of warm weather. I'll be back again to see how it goes.
Update: I have since been back multiple times. When the place isn't overflowing with people the service is pretty good. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I've had almost everything on the menu and it is all delicious. And you can't beat it during patio weather! I'll be counting down the days until the snow melts and the sun shines again.
Ben Allen
Only there for happy hour and only dabbled I’m happy hour offerings, but I was super happy with my chicken tinga and carnitas tacos. Also had one of the best margaritas in the twin cities. Potent, but not overpowering and far from watered down.
Judy DeCora
Good tortillas which is the base of a lot of latino dishes. Food spiced real good, not overly spicy.
Todd Miller
Twice there inside a month. Excellent service the first time, mediocre the second. Super tasty pizza with remarkable views of the river and skyline.
RKFilms
A moody, romantic, candle lit dining experience with friendly staff, quick service and delicious authentic food. Only complaint was that the portions were pretty small, not the typical overflowing plates you see at other Mexican places. I was barely full after an appetizer, entree, and dessert. They were also a little short on wait staff when I went and so only had bar seats open, but the service was great regardless and the flavors hit on every dish
Stephen
I went here for me and my girlfriend's first date two years ago, and we came back for our anniversary at the end of October to celebrate. I contacted Jefe in advance to make a reservation, and Joan went above and beyond to coordinate with me via email, I was able to sit at the exact same table as we did on our first date, and we got a dessert on the house. Made for a very special night. The food was fantastic as always, I highly recommend the enchilada dish and the salsa sampler. Thanks again, I'll be back soon!
Laurie Prince
Great, warm, old wood interior. Very large restaurant and bar. Happy hour margaritas were tasty, as was the guacamole, but the guac was expensive...around $12. 4 stars because of that.
Lauren Aust
Best items on the menu are the Yucca Fritas and Chicken Tinga and Carnitas tacos. Service is a bit slow but the food is delicious.
Glenn Gibson
Great patio, great location. The food was good, the drinks were a bit light on what you want in a good drink if you know what I mean.
Kendra Yankey
Love the vibe and the chicken tinga tacos and corn are full of flavor! And love the tequila flights. The service was great.
Gus Anchondo
Great place to grab a bite any time. Small bites and good drinks. A bit too much salt but overall really good place and patio.
Kaarina Tungseth
Amazing! Good food and excellent drinks. Get the queso fresco and yuca fritas!
Mary Nicol
Attended a wedding reception here last night (downstairs in the Hall of Kings). The setting was beautiful, the staff people were very courteous and efficient, and the food was exceptional!
Kristen L. Matulis
Jefe is a great spot. They have a nice patio, and the indoor space has a lovely aesthetic as well. The margaritas are 10/10. The staff were always really nice when I visited (I came a few times when I lived in Minneapolis-St. Paul). Plus, you're right on the river, so perfect walkability after you have your meal! :-)
george w
Absolutely fabulous service, food, and price. There was a 10 to 15 minute wait for our party of 3. Once we were seated and placed our orders, appetizers and food arrived quickly. Would definitely recommend for Cuban food.
Laura Heilman
The enchiladas were great! The cocktails were also delicious. It was a very dark moody atmosphere and not too loud that we couldn't hear each other. Will definitely be going back.
Bri Vigliotti
Jefe is easily one of my favorite spots in the Twin Cities. First off, the overall dark, romantic ambiance of the place is fantastic and the patio is great too. The service is awesome and quick. The cocktails (particularly all of their Mezcal drinks) are phenomenal! The chipotle and mango salsas are some of the best. And the FOOD! The flavors are so potent and delicious! Their carnitas enchiladas are so tasty! This is a great spot for a date or a small get-together! Mad love for this place, the staff & the chefs! Oh and their music playlists are always perfection. Love y’all!
micaela castro
I was recommended this place by a lot of people from Minneapolis but I honestly thought the food was pretty bad. I’m from Houston, Texas where we have AMAZING Mexican food options so I think my standards are a little higher. The patio was nice :)
Anita Larson
Great date night place. Food and drinks are excellent and tapas is always fun.
Bambi
We were actually planning on going to another resteraunt and saw this place. It had a Beautiful patio so we decided to stop. The food was great and our waitress as well. Between me and a friend, we got the chips and salsa, chicken tacos and steak fajita. All of them tasted great but the tacos were the best. It was the perfect amount of food to feel satisfied but not stuffed.
Jocelyn McQuirter
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Worth booking a reservation for the patio views.
Tasty drinks. The strawberry margarita was right sized. Agree with other reviews on the food - so so and uneventful. 2 drinks, 1 app, and 1 entree and you can expect around $60 for the bill.
Jeff Hurst
New favorite Mexican restaurant!!! Empanadas, oxtail quesadilla, Torta, tacos, all excellent. Best elote I've ever had. Definitely a fan and will be back!
Sarah Coulombe
Cannot recommend this place enough! The mango salsa is the best I've ever had, and the barbacoa tacos are so good! And the elote is just as flavorful! Everything has a decent spice level, which I'm a fan of!
The service here is fantastic, the waitress and man at the front desk were a great help! If you had to pick between this and something else, I recommend this place!
Kendra Charles
Great food, service was slow. Awesome patio space right on the river.
Urvashi Desai
Absolutely loved the tacos! The ambience was beautiful-dark with yellow lamps and candles.
I had a cocktail with prosecco - it was sweet with grapefruit flavour and i enjoyed it.
The tacos pictured are vegan chorizo tacos. I would recommend it ! We also got chips and salsa. They gave three different salsa dips. I loved the mango habenero salsa.
Would definitely go again!
Bryan Murphy
We stopped here for dinner before a show at the Guthrie. We didn't have reservations so just took some stools at the bar. Several staff behind the bar all worked together to serve us seamlessly. The standard Jefe margarita was fair. The flavor was a little flat. Chips and guac was amazing. The taco selection was fantastic...and the tinge was by far the best flavor. Atmosphere Jefe was really nice!
Katie Mauger
Great spot for a date on a special occasion! The food is a little pricey (but worth it) and it's quite dark inside. Other than that, everything was perfect. Wait staff were knowledgeable and friendly, the food is delicious, and the drinks are excellent.
Connor McDonald
From someone that doesn’t typically reviews regardless of a good or bad experience, this is necessary. As a person that lives close by and frequents this restaurant I have to give praise to the staff. We arrived on a Friday night without a reservation and were immediately accommodated by Alex that they would get a table for us. Not a minute later we were seated and completely taken care of by Robin, our server. Management should be extremely proud of these employees and the attention to detail they have for their regulars as it is so appreciated and cannot go unnoticed. The food always keeps us coming back but these individuals truly make all the difference.
Kevin K
Great food, service and atmosphere! The cocktails are fantastic and the food was quite delicious and authentic! It was my gfs birthday and our server went above and beyond to make her feel special! We were very happy with our experience here and will be returning very soon
Melissa Evamois
Seriously awesome food. The fried Yucca was amazing.
Service was friendly and drinks were strong.
Jeffery Newville
We came here for dinner and sat on the patio. It's a great area to be outside, and I love their deck seating. We tried the chips and salsa trio, we all agreed the habanero-mango salsa was the best. We also tried a few types of tacos and all shared. My favorite was the camarones tacos. They were so flavorful and delicious. The smokey paloma was a little bland, but the mezcal negroni was fantastic!
Jeremy Kocke
Need a break from a long week? This is the spot! Excellent staff, great ambiance, and delicious food.
The food is so fresh and flavorful. You should definitely try the Yuca Frita and the enchiladas were Amazing!
Lots of beautiful craft cocktails being served and the staff really provided great service.
Carl Luoma
Great Mexican restaurant serving quality food at reasonable price. I was quite impressed with the tacos and empanadas. Given the location and decor of this place I expected either small tacos with only a little meat or for them to be more expensive. I left well satisfied and without feeling like I spent too much. The beer selection was not awesome, but good enough with a few local beers available. Our server was always nearby to refill drinks or chips despite how busy they seemed to be. We'll definitely be back again.
Daniel Opare-Addo
Great outdoor bar and food. The food was very good. Service was good.
Natalie L
Fun cocktails menu and great outdoor seating!
K Smith
The setting of this restaurant is very pleasant. It overlooks the river and is a hip area of the Minneapolis riverfront. We went for happy hour and were pleased to sit outside on their large patio overlooking the river and skyline. Their happy hour deals are great and their food and drinks are divine. I haven't experience their food menu, but intend to visit again soon to experience it. I would highly recommend, a ravishing and unique place.
Renarchia Wright
I had the fish tacos and let me tell you, it was so delicious! I actually paired it with the habanero mango salsa for a little more kick and it was so good! I literally inhaled those things. Will definitely be coming back for those tacos! Great staff. Great service. Great food.
Tyler Baars
One of our favorite restaurants in the cities! The ambiance is amazing and the food is always spot on. Though it may be a bit pricey, you pay for the whole experience and it's worth it in my opinion. Chicken tinga tacos are a must and if they have the tostones - they are as well! Also, it is definitely evident they are constantly cleaning and disinfecting which I also appreciated. So glad they've reopened - thank you!
Taylor Dewitz
The waiter was polite and knew his menu, but the cocktails and margaritas were bland. The food was great, but pricey. I paid $12 for 2 fancy taco's, or I could walk to the rusty taco to get 4 taco's for the same price. It could use some more light, since I could barely read the menu because the lighting was poor. That said, it also gets credit for being a better environment for engaging with friends over some drinks.
Roxx Ann
Love the new management and the staff. Atmosphere always been chill. Roof top nice. Food is good too.
Phil Gran
Excellent cocktails, better than average Mexican food. Get a table on the patio obviously (because Main street). Some portions are smallish, like tapas, which makes me wish there was more variety in the plates that are available for sharing. But you really can't go wrong with this place for casual food/drinks in a beautiful setting.
Adam Yarish
Intimate atmosphere, quality cocktails, great menu, and killer salsas. The mango salsa is a must
Melanie Holmes
This is a great stop for happy hour, especially during the summer. Their margaritas & sangria are both super tasty! I also like the tacos & tostada salsa sampler! Disclaimer: i've never eaten from the dinner menu here, but it looks tasty too!
Susan Opare-Addo
Great atmosphere and good tacos. Service was also good.
Krista Thoman
Jefe is on a beautiful spot with a nice view. Happy hour is good with a decent selection of beverages and cheaper eats, but the specialty meats are what we'd recommend. Both the shrimp diablo and the short ribs were delicious; the flavors worked very well. We can't wait to come back!
Mark Bednarchuk
Beautiful place, candle light mostly, awesome food. Great for Two or a group of ten. Great staff! Awesome food. Limited drink choices due to they have authentic booze in line with the restaurant theme. Awesome food. Prices are on the higher end but surprisingly the drinks were not rediculous. Did I say the food was AWESOME? Our group of six all agreed, the food was awesome.....
Corey Harris
Went here for my son's 12th birthday. He wanted Mexican food and we didn't want the standard stuff available from the local chains. ToroLoro. This place is amazing! Upscale ambience with reasonable prices and the food was amazing. Really cool atmosphere with top notch service. Really wish I knew our server's name as she did a great job taking care of us. This is my new favorite go to for tacos and the like. Good beer list too. Highly recommend! Also, my wife is vegan and there were many great options for her to choose from including Hebervorus Butcher Chirizo Tacos which she said were great. Not many good options for us out there to all get what we want. We now have one more.
Shivii William
Love this place. Great food options and service.. quality of food was so fresh
Ashley Knuth
One of the most privileged places I have been to in the cities.
The food was good. It didn't blow me away and they didn't offer anything memorable.
The drinks we're pricey, which I don't mind if they are innovative or unique but these were very basic.
The view is great and it was a nice night.
The clientele was so beige I was embarrassed that I brought an out of town guests to a place with no diversity. And worst the amount of bridge and tunnel (or the tc equivalent) woman there on happy hour was obnoxious. Drunk woman trying to pee together when there are only single stalls is pretty funny but also irritating.
Sarah Valentine
Kelsey was our waitress tonight. She was amazing!! It was a super busy holiday evening and she never made us feel less than awesome. We didn't have reservations and hoped for an outside table, which we got. Kelsey got our drink order in right away and helped us get our food order in before the kitchen closed. She was personable and friendly. Thank you Jefe for hiring great staff!
Simon (SimeTime)
Elegant and relaxed bar atmosphere. Great eats at okay prices. On St. Anthony Main, beautiful view of the river and downtown. Decent beer selection, but you are better off drinking cocktails here. I have been here a number of times and will return again.
Caitlin O'Connell
The food was good but the decor is problematic. Serving Mexican food with large portraits of Conquistadors is...again...problematic.
Andrea Koczur
Wonderful ambiance. Neat place to eat. Food was great. Too cold doors were open
Sarah
What a gem!
I would describe Jefe as Latin-inspired cuisine. My partner and I arrived with ten minutes left to happy hour, which was just enough time for him to order one of each of the HH tacos at $3 each. We also ordered the guacamole, fried yucca, tap beer, Jefe margarita, and canned beer + shot (the last two were also HH specials). Somehow our server made a mistake putting in our order so that we ended up with two extra tacos on the house.
My dude, a taco aficionado, thought each of the three different tacos was delicious. We received two chicken tinga, two carnitas, and one vegan chorizo taco. I only tried the vegan chorizo, and thought it was yummy as well. (I wonder if they get the vegan chorizo from The Herbivorous Butcher? It tastes a lot like theirs).
The guacamole was absolutely delicious in flavor, although my dude didn't love the ultra-smooth rather than chunky texture of it. The yucca was also absolutely delicious, perfectly crispy on the outside but soft and starchy on the inside. The margarita had me feeling tipsy after one serving. The beer list had decent variety and tap options for a Mexican restaurant.
Last but no less important, service was great! Our server was friendly, attentive, and prompt. The food and drinks all came out in a reasonable time.
Less than ten tables filled + a few folks seated at the bar on a Thursday evening. The crowd was mostly folks like me on a date as well as a few 20-something friends meeting up.
Ariana Song
A true hidden gem in St. Anthony! Slightly more upscale Mexican food with high quality and tender meat. The waitstaff were also lovely.
The only potential downside is how extremely dim the place is - 2 candles per table and no overhead lighting.
Colin Fahey
The salsa sampler appetizer was a real stand out, with enough to sample for 4 people easily. Be sure to ask for more chips though, inexplicably they offer only a few but will get more (an adequate amount) on request. There was a lot of variety in the salsas so everyone could find a favorite, though all were good. Entrees were delicious, and surprisingly filling, so be sure to take a walk around the river afterwards if weather permits!
Jeff H
The food was excellent, service and atmosphere were very good. It was too hot that day so we opted to sit inside, but the would have liked to be on the patio. The two cocktails that I had were real good but my wife gave me a taste of her margarita, and that was quite possibly the worst tasting margarita that I have had.
Kathy Maxwell
Really good happy hour. I got a delicious margaritas and a variety of tacos, the mushroom one was awesome! The decor is also super fun and they have a party overlooking the locks.
Joe Roberts
Friendly service and solid food. The camarones tacos were well cooked and seasoned. The oxtail quesadillas needed a little less cheese to allow the meat to shine but that's being picky. Overall a really solid dining experience!
Mike Larkin
Our initial reservation was lost for a party of 7. Once we brought it to their attention, they remedied things very quickly. Had great service, the tacos were great. Would highly recommend the Oxtail Quesadilla as an app. Overall great experience
Mpls Girl
WATCH OUT FOR WASPS! While eating on their patio on a beautiful evening, I was stung by a wasp. The wasp was hanging out around my water glass and thought it left, when it came back and stung me my on my leg. Anyway, the food was great (tacos and elote) though the only thing that I could think about was the wasp.
Wendy Fink
Great experience. We went with a group of 8, and we reserved are table ahead of time. When we came they had everything ready. We were there before 6:00 so we got in on the HH specials. Yummy drinks and the food was amazing!! We all got something different and everything was good and super reasonable. Great atmosphere and our server was wonderful too
Madelyn Shafer
Great happy hour margaritas and unique choices of wine, Spanish grapes consistent with the restaurant theme. Great tacos. Staff seem relatively unhappy (hostess and waitresses).
Michael Parris
This place is amazing. The drinks are awesome the food is incredible the atmosphere is excellent. Service was on point staff was very knowledgeable about food and drinks. Sometimes they have live performances which are also excellent. Can get a little crowded but worth the wait. Definitely try the oxtail quesadillas.
Brian Wene
03/26/2019 The energy within Jefe is rich. The service & servers themselves are nice & conversational. I ordered carnitas tamales & started with delicious tostadas. Highly recommended to make your Minneapolis adventure one for thethe memory books. Check out!
Angi
Very cool location right on st Anthony main. Food was great! Not the most authentic tasting, but the ain't plantains and tres leches were just right. I really love the interior. Nice atmosphere. I'd go back for happy hour and small plates
Jeanene Valentine
This is the best Mexican food I've had since moving to Minneapolis. Being a native Californian, and half Latin, that's huge! Incredible ambience. Great service. You gotta check it out and order a blackberry margarita.
Micah Small
There are many times when I dine out and for some reason or another I cannot justify giving a five star rating. After having dined here repeatedly, this place is easily the most well rounded and well thought out place in Minneapolis. Both the cocktail menu and food menu have something for everyone. The authenticity of the food is evident in every bite. The cocktails are purely divine and should be savored. Music is always on point. Cozy- Ness level is a 10 of 10. The view of the skyline and Mississippi make it a destination spot during summer. Perfection has never tasted this good.
Megan Glidden
Jefe is one of the best places for tacos in the Twin Cities! Every time I come here, I get a fantastic experience, delicious food, and awesome drinks. The servers and bartenders have been very accommodating and the food is unreal. Try the oxtail quesadillas and literally any taco on the menu. It's my go to spot whenever friends are in from out of town. The inside is so cute and cozy, and their patio is to die for.
Daniel Brinkman
This place is incredible. good cocktails, amazing food. service was 5 star. Will definitely be telling my friends about this place.
Fenix Marlo
This place is cozy during the evening especially as fall is here. The vegan chorizo with avocado and a side of plantains and the carnitas tacos are my favorites. The primo margarita with taijin is life. Thomas is an excellent server ☺️ we always leave satisfied.
Krista Meyers
Fantastic flavor! The mix of flavors in the appetizers, tacos, and entrees we've tried have been very good. The drinks are good but pretty expensive.
Jandeen Boone
I met a friend for happy hour at Jefe and we had a wonderful time! We were fortunate to get a table outside so we were able to enjoy the wonderful weather while sipping our tasty margaritas! The happy hour specials at Jefe are terrific; the house margarita is half price and the tacos are $3! We also enjoyed the tostadas and salsas as well as the guacamole (way too much food for 2 people!). Our server was attentive without hovering. If you're looking for a nice outdoor spot with great drinks and food, Jefe is your place! I can't wait to go back!
S B
Elote and the passion fruit margarita!! So amazing!
Denise Randall
Delicious FOOD and wonderful atmosphere! Definitely a VIBE💖 …
Benjamin Urness
Meh, the Margarita's we're good, make sure you ask the price of the guacamole. Our waitress asked if we'd like some right when we say down, of course we we... Who wouldn't. Once we got our bill we discovered a small dish (we had a lot of chips left but no guac) was $14! Menu says guac is Market Price. Not cool.
Melissa Steele
Very tasty food! The guac is hard to beat. I wasn't super impressed by the service. Our server just seemed grouchy but everyone has bad days. Overall it was good and I love the patio 😊 …
Hans Loven
Quite good. High quality, interesting dishes and drinks. Loved the horchata--a unique and refreshing, non-alcoholic drink. They also have a great space down on St Anthony Main. During warmer weather they can open up large doors across the facade, which greatly improves on the already-pleasant interior. The patio, of course, is even better. I took them down 1 star based on the outrageous salinity of one of our dishes--it was really gross.... Took the remainder of my Horchata to wash out the salt.
Sylvia Hamilton
All eight of us at our table enjoyed our food. We all agreed we'd go back. I had the enchilada and it was fantastic..
Heather Horgen
Great food and drinks, great service and atmosphere. They have six different homemade salsas which are always amazing. They have great happy hour deals too. It's a great place to relax and enjoy an evening!
Dan Cannon
Hands down best atmosphere of any restaurant in Minneapolis. I absolutely love the bar lights and the authentic Spanish ambiance. I lived in Spain for a while and this brings me back every time. Great tacos and other food items.
Manju Parikh
Nice Tequila (good selection). Had the roasted corn as appetizer. My husband ordered soapes with shrimp. Delicious. Good service. Nice place to relax on a weekday evening.
Derick Hildebrandt
I was lucky enough to visit Jefe on a day that was nice enough to draw people to the patio. Because of this my group had the entire interior of the restaurant to ourselves and it was fantastic! For starters I ordered their Tostadas with Housemade Salsa & an order of Guacamole. Both were fantastic and worth checking out. For my main dish I ordered their Oxtail Quesadilla, another dish that was well worth ordering.
Ben s
Wow. Coworker happy hour and we sampled about half of the appetizers. Every one was delicious, surprising and prompted discussion about the texture or flavor complexity. Can't wait to go back.
Katey Wade
Delicious margaritas and huge tacos for Happy Hour. They have a vegan chorizo which was sooo gooood. The chips and guac are $14, which is highway robbery. So don't be like me and get 2 margaritas and then spend way too much money on smashed avocado. Get there early to snag a seat on the patio.
Addie Wales
We tried a variety of appetizers and meats and tacos and everything was super flavorful! The yucca fries are the best I’ve ever had in the Twin Cities, beating Hola Arepa, Chimborazo and Brasa.
Morgan Atchison
This is one of our favorite restaurants in the twin cities. The staff are very genuine and truly care about your experience. You are walking distance from many other great places and it is right along the river, so a perfect view of the city!
caitlin blanton
Fun funky atmosphere with a great feeling about the whole place. The drinks and food are delicious, I liked the variety of meats and options for the tacos. Friendly staff and fast service!
Ricardo Del Valle Ortega
Day 2 at Jefe Urban Hacienda
This is the first time I can actually say this felt like fine dining for Mexican food.
Great balance of flavors.
Charlie Gibbs and Josh Dorrian
Phenomenal Chefs
#comfortfood #fine #dining
Dara Gruber
Best margs in the twin cities! Great fresh mix in options. Lighting is a bit dim and be prepared to spend some time here. This is not a quick eats type of place. But the food is delicious. I recommend the stuffed poblano!
august johnston
(Pronounced "Hef-ay")
Well that was unexpectedly great! They have a nice outside deck on Main St. It's a really nice space thats quite inviting. They've only just opened much to my surprise. They ran a tight ship for being so new. It's not cheap, but not over the top either. We spent $60 (including tip) on 3 drinks and 2 apps, plus $1 for the meter (parking). The beer selection wasn't huge, but sufficient (only one IPA on tap - $7). My wife had a custom cocktail that she loved ($12). The wild mushroom taco's were pretty dang good (Gourmet style but the lights were a bit dark so I had a hard time seeing the food very well) . We found it while driving around looking for a place to get a drink and snacks, and because it was a nice surprise, I gave it an extra star. Otherwise I would give it a 4 stars... but only because it was a bit too dark, and because i'm a little cheap. I'm sure I'll be back.
A great addition to the neighborhood.
Andrew, the manager (and our bar tender, we sat at the bar), was very nice and professional to the T. Cheers!
phillip valentine
Location and outdoor seating is phenomenal...food is a take on Mexican street food...its good but its not the street tacos I had in Mexico City and is on the higher end of the price range for me. I'd go there again for the drinks and atmosphere
Mandy Griffin
I wish I had found this place sooner! Great happy hour with delicious sangria and tacos. Nice patio, good staff. Can't wait to go back again. Yum.
Amando Komoda
They have tacos. And other food, but mainly the tacos.
Meow Barambio
The cocktail COCINA HOT TODDY is AMAZING!
Morgan Roddy
We stopped here for a quick bite before a movie at St. Anthony Main Theater and it was a quick bite indeed! I ordered carnitas tacos and a beer for my wife and I and the tacos came out right when the beer did. The corn tortilla is thick and sturdy and the pork had great flavor (still not actually carnitas, though, as many other Twin Cities call pork dishes incorrectly). Overall nice place, spendy of course because of location, but I'd come back for sure!
Stacie Zaffke
Good food, reasonably priced. The salsa/tostada appetizer is a bit weird and pricey. Drinks and tacos were very good. Fun atmosphere, slow service
Tim Rose
Excellent food, outdoor seating, wonderful service and accommodation. Cocktails were top shelf.
Visit these guys soon.
laura cloud
Much variety for fish and chicken dishes. Atmosphere is lively, staff are accommodating without being intrusive; menu is a quick read; fair beverage selection; spacious booths and plenty of outdoor seating.
Nika Corwin
Food was good and drinks were great. They just had opened the week I went so the service was a little slow, however the food and drinks made up for it. Plus it was the first few weeks of them being open. Haven't been back since but will definitely
Jonathan Leland
Really cool environment to hangout, get some drinks and have some awesome food. The Chicken Street Bowl and the Sopes were our groups favorite. The only reminder is that these are small plates, so we ended up getting a couple more entrees than we thought.
Maryann Bartos
Great food, drink and service
Mezcal Negroni...a smokey bitter.
Jose Gonzalez
Nice atmosphere beautiful interior for drinks piña de fuego is the best
Ali
Great atmosphere!! Very comfy, plus has an outdoor patio overlooking Saint Anthony Main area. I only had a beer here, but I hear the food is quite good as well.
Sophie Burch
One of the best places for happy hour in the cities. Great tacos and drinks. Slightly pricey when going here for a meal, but I'll happily come back for the happy hour prices.
Elise Rogers
Special shout out to Johan (sorry if that is spelled incorrectly)! You are such a thoughtful, hospital human. Thank you for helping us find a table in tricky times and for being so considerate of everyone around you! Can't say I've had this good of customer service in YEARS. Cheers to you!
Lisa B
Great food and atmosphere. The menu was limited and we ended spending a lot to have enough to eat. But it was all really good and the service was fine.
Terri Bailey
Great food, good service and cool vibes but the drinks are extremely over priced! Like $16 for a 6 oz margarita!?!
Angie R
Met some friends here and had a lovely time. Great drinks, great apps, and tasty chicken tinga tacos!
Laura Bosacker
The cocktails are delicious and I loved the food. The patio seating is beautiful on a nice evening.
Ricky DeMello
The chips, salsa, and service were very good! The market price for the avocado was $4 so take that as you will. Good avocado too.
Eli
Nice patio seating. Sat inside and went with a large group to celebrate a birthday. Waitress was very nice and accommodating for the large group. Food was good.
Kelsey Gavin
Food was tasty but a bit unnecessarily "fancy". Happy hour menu is much more reasonable. The building is absolutely beautiful inside and out.
Ashley Montgomery
Great cocktails and good food. Good vibes!
Patrick Kelly
Very well done upscale Mexican. Great outdoor space.
Christian Heinrich
We're not big Mexican eaters, but going there with family turned out to be a very tasty surprise. Great food and wonderful service, which makes well up for the fact that one cannot see downtown from the porch.
Stacy Welle
The chips and salsa were awesome! The tacos were all good and we weren't the biggest fan of the mushroom enchiladas.
Marsai Richardson
Great HH, menu and atmosphere. I typically don't drink Margaritas but Jefe's are the bomb! Definitely will continue going again.
Pedro Tanure
They serve really tasty food at very reasonable price. For example, I ordered a Chile Relleno and enjoyed it a lot. The place is gorgeous both inside and outside.
Milan Koppen
The tamales were 1st class, best I have ever had. They have Mezcal flights which I gladly ordered. Excellent service, no wait! Highly recommended!
Abby Cole
Celebrated son's birthday!!
Brandon Schumann
The wait was short and the cocktails, food, and service were excellent. The cocktails and food we're flavorful with a nuanced and enjoyable complexity.
AirJourdan FPV
Enjoy the environment. Would love to see frozen margs and more home style Mexican dishes like pozole, sopes, and gordita de chicharron. Maybe even some salsa for the spice addicts. Will be back.
Manuel Baez
Great food, fast service and the price amazing.
Nicole Westphal
Nice atmosphere, attentive wait staff, food is descent, not amazing but drinks were good. 1 Drink, dinner and tip was about 40$ for one person so middle-high range for cost id say.
Dipendra Mahaseth
I came here on Saturday night for dinner with friends . Kelsey was awesome! I appreciate good food ! Food was fabulous! I loved how lights and articheture looked inside. Definitely coming back here.
Jonathan Johnson
Best margarita in Minneapolis! Had the mezcal margarita last night, nice and smoky. Bartenders are awesome, can’t wait to go back!
Morgan Ehlers
No food this time. I've had their food in the past and it was great from what I remember. Just drinks tonight. The staff was friendly and genuine. I had the Mr. Tambourine Man and it was refreshing.
Hussein Diab
The atmosphere is really nice but we didn't enjoy the food. The plates were small and if you are hungry then you're out of luck.
beausandland
Just okay. Not great, not horrible. Nothing special about it. If you want really good authentic Mexican food I’d advise trying somewhere else
Jodi Irwin
The ambiance was really nice. The staff acted as though they couldn't wait for us to leave. Even set up a barricade between the patio and bathrooms as closing time approached.
James Wendell
Great interior ambience, incredible setting (uncertain about how they will fair in the winter), good food for decent menu...portions could be bigger, but you can always satisfy your hunger with tostadas. ;)
Spencer Grimes
Delicious food, especially the vegan chorizo. Very cool astetic and vibe. A little expensive but if you're feeling ritzy love it up!
Jonathon Lacher
Like many of the places on St Anthony Main, the location is neat, and that's about it. Jefe is generally over-priced for what you get, and I would describe the taste of the food and service as "average" and "passable".
Dennis Kroll
Very good feel to the place. Great service and appetizers.
Mr. T
Great place! We sat outside and had dinner and drinks and loved all of it. We will be back.
Jeannine Marie Photography
Hall of Kings (the private event room at Jefe) is amazing! I photographed an event here recently and loved photographing the unique space! Plus the food is really good, too!
Allie Danielson
I love some good tacos. Plus $5 margarita on HH. Very cool location. Love sitting on the patio in the summer.
Beth D
Decent tacos. Slow service and over priced for quality.
Devin Batkiewicz
Great happy hour drinks! Their salsas, which look amazing, and all pretty unpalatable. Avoid those and I think you'll be pretty happy here.
Denise M.
Amazing food, house made salsas and tostadas, oxtail quesadilla is to die for, gluten free options, and excellent margaritas.... Fantastic service too!
Carolyn
Their shrimp taco is amazing and so is the chips and guacamole.. best chips ever! However it’s kinda overpriced and the tacos are tiny.
Roxanne Lostroscio
Loved this place inside and out! Particularly in my mouth & tummy! Yum! Best Summer Mescal & Barbacoa Tacos ever!
Shauna O'Brien
Absolute perfection in every way...the food, ambiance, service, location are all outstanding. One of my favorite spots in the city. I hesitate to tell you this because I'm selfish and want Jefe to myself. ;)
Katy Bonello
Great location, fun food and good drink selection!
Flower Krutina
Food was great and was happy with the mezcal. In the spring/summer, the outdoor seating is the best!
Paul Haller
Location is nice, and the service was good. Not a great beer selection, but most people go here for the margaritas.
Josh Sandelin
Great space and environment. Amazing tacos, guac, chips, margs. Staff is very helpful and accommodating.
Vicki Erickson
Great happy hour. Fantastic service. Fun vibe. Patio outdoors is excellent for summer. Highly recommend. Will be back for dinner and brunch.
Brian Evans
Good food and drinks with a great deck for people watching. Friendly service too. A little pricey, so only four stars.
Andrew Meggs
A decent spot for trendy Mexican. The duck tamale was kinda disappointing, but the pork on plantains was DANK. The atmosphere is nice too, and the staff was really kind and gracious.
Craig Poucher
Other than the dim lighting, the restaurant was great. Great happy hour. Good food, margaritas, and atmosphere. Sean was a greater server.
Steve Johnson
Hanger steak was solid. Very top notch guacamole by the kicker is a spicy margarita with muddled jalepenos.
Katia
The best Mexican food in town. Tres Leches cake is a must, but it's not available in winter, as we found out today:-(
Cisco Ramirez
Food was amazing as well as the service! Great atmosphere and a phenomenal mural painted on the wall when you walk in!
Mark Carlson
Great place for a party! Excellent staff, warm, casual environment. No hassle tunnel-attached parking ramp. Good time!
Peter Farley
Probably the best happy hour deals in Minneapolis. On top of that, a great deck outside just steps from the cobblestone Main Street and from the Mississippi River.
noelle Alex Fru
Great food! Little $$ but well worth. Leave time for street parking. Try the shrimp tacos or chili releno!!!
Matthew Gress
Veggie person or not. The wild mushroom tacos are great and atill 7 bucks at a para-downtown location! OK I want more after writing this.
Jon McDonald
Mezcal! Went on Valentine's Day and it was great. Spanish guitar, view of the city, and great food. Probably nicer in the Summer too.
