Reviews of Hi-Lo Diner
Waz Waz
Delicious food, very kind and welcoming staff.
Was the first time at Hi-Lo, got the Disco Fries and spicy cheese curds to share then ordered some chicken wild rice for a light lunch. The server, host and all the employees were very kind and sweet to us.
The food was absolutely delicious. Their halal (beef) gravy was very delicious on top of their seasoned fries and the cheese curds had a light tempura batter that didn't sit in your stomach heavy.
They have really delicious coffee and fresh orange juice that was perfect!
Only thing that I wasn't a fan of is how low their tables are to the bench. Just feels a little uncomfortable for the legs but other than that, no complaints at all.
Rasikanand Harvind
Interesting and delicious food! We tried their Gary Cooper and Notorious P.I.G Hi Tops. Both did not disappoint. I didn't think that combination of flavors would work, but it does! Retro diner vibes. Seating is limited and somewhat hard to get. Service is pretty quick, but food took about 15-20 minutes to arrive when I went last. Can't miss this place from the road. Was not hard to find street parking when I went around noon on the weekend.

What a fun little spot! We had heard about this place but our first time visiting did not disappoint. There are no reservations so it's first come first serve. The inside is a tiny little retro well diner. Counter seating and little booths make it so fun!
It took 20 minutes to get seated on a Sunday at 12:30 PM for two. The service was always super friendly and relatively fast considering how busy they were.
The donut was made to order and oozing with goodness. It was pretty fluffy so you ended up with a pretty breast consistency. My husband and I both devoured our entrées and we appreciated that the portions weren't completely overwhelming.
We will certainly be back again!

Tonight I shared the most decadent and delightful meal with my friend to celebrate landing a new job. I went all out- milkshake, pancake, eggs, hash browns, veggie sausage, and a biscuit. What a feast! Everything was to die for. The pancake was sweet and fluffy. The veggie sausage appeared to be house-made, and the texture and flavor were spot-on. The milkshake was absolutely incredible, and I’m pretty sure the whipped cream was made fresh. The service was friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is that of an old-school retro diner. It’s fun to go when the sun is setting and to feel the energy shift as the night grows dark and the neon lights continue to glow. Love the Hi-Lo!

I have wanted to go here for a while and it was worth the wait! I got a delicious breakfast burrito and my wife enjoyed the hash stuffed hash! Everything looked great on the menu and the staff was very friendly. We will be coming back!
Andrea Hannem
Love Hi-Lo dinner. Order a Bloody Mary spicy comes with a high life pony. The breakfast burrito is stellar with smothered sauce. If you order a dish with toast make sure to ask for the house jam. It will not disappoint.
MARUVELAN D
The restaurant itself is quite memorable. It is modeled after a classic vintage diner, complete with neon and a seated bar. The space is small but surprisingly spacious inside, with plenty of seating for what seemed like the perfect churn of visitors, never a line to be seen but also few empty booths. The dishes themselves were fantastic. The burger was cooked as ordered and quite juicy, the cheese curds were fried to perfection and carried a slight kick in their aftertaste, and the Benedict was a perfect combination of capers, sauce, salmon, and onions.
Overall, this is definitely a worthy visit for a fun meal.
Jen Danilowski
As part of a trip to the city, friends and I stopped into the Hi-Lo to take advantage of the Hi-Top, a satisfying combination of donut covered in savory or sweet offerings.
As someone who is plant-based, the kitchen generously created a new Hi-Top for me with the beyond burger as a substitute. It was "beyond" excellent. Thank you again for an amazing meal.
Faisal Masood
Visited hi-lo diner and enjoyed their breakfast menu. Hash stufded hash with veg option was really amazing and different experience. Their coffee was hot and good.
Due to weekend it was crowded and took 15 min to get the table. It was worth the wait.
Food: 5/5
Quality: 5/5
Service: 4.5/5
Overall place: 4/5

Brunch date with my little family, sister, & her boyfriend. Yummy food, & all the staff were friendly, even though the place was packed. They were professional and greeted us all welcomely! Always so blessed with yummy food & amazing people!
Courtney Barnwell
I’ve been here a bunch of times and it’s such a great spot. A fun concept and really fast service. The drinks are better than the food but still worth coming in. We love the cocktails and the Oreo milkshake!
Jorge Aranzeta
Saw this on the best ever food review show and I had to try their version of chicken and waffles .... it's the best I have ever had.... and not overly decadent. It was probably the best thing I had on my last trip to Minnesota. The service was great too, the girls were very nice to us.
Kimara Bonitto Realtor-HomeSmart
This is my second time eating at this restaurant. Today the food was awesome as the last time ! Love the wild rice soup! When I come back visiting Minnesota, for sure I will come back for another round.
Jaxin Jaxin
Friendly, helpful staff... I ordered the following.... 1 biscust, 1 french toast slice, bacon, and one egg over hard. The food was ok... The biscuit wasnt the best, the egg was cooked perfectly, the french toast was decent, but I hate undercooked chewy bacon... So not giving them much praise...
Kari Kingbird
Longfellow's Hi-Lo Diner does not disappoint, Sunday bloody was potent and pointed well with their own house hash, short order eggs, bacon and saturated sourdough hits the spot! Pride of the eat side 💜
Julius Niskey
Great place for the early morning breakfast. Servers are great and the restaurant takes me back to the days of eating in Philly and Jersey growing up. You see where the old cigarette machine once stood or was it by the door and the table jukeboxes at each table. The food is pretty good here. Definitely my goto breakfast joint when running into St. Paul.
Dana H.
A fun retro diner with delicious shakes! Very accommodating when dealing with our son's numerous food allergies. Highly recommend stopping in!
Dreki Ku
Great ambiance it feels like going back in time. The food is perfectly executed and the staff is friendly and very helpful. Prices are just about right and portions are more that enough. It is a jewel hidden in Minneapolis.
Steven
This is a hidden gem in Minneapolis. I went cause I had a hankering for chicken and waffles. I didn't get chicken and waffles but I got something more. I got the Gary Cooper (think donuts, gravy, maple syrup and a chicken tender with a sprinkling of green onions). The food was fast, hot and delicious. I suggest you go if you're in the area.
Peter Yang
Beautiful day out to dine outside the diner, food presentation and taste was very good, but the Bloody Mary mix was so-so. Will go back and try other entrees. I had the Fried Chicken on the donut, Gary Cooper.
RaNetta Penland
I’ve been coming here for a couple years now and love the food! My favorite is the Tex Amex Burrito and the French Toast!! It’s so amazing. The staff here is amazing!
Marin has always been amazing!
Tried the wings today and they were pretty good! If you are in Minnesota make sure to stop here.
Jordon Fiske
Great food with a fun atmosphere. First time getting breakfast and will be back to try more items from the menu . The eggs Benedict was very good.
Alexzandra Lukaszczyk
Absolutely love this place! Food was generous, reasonably priced, and most importantly, damn good. We went for brunch and even though I'm not a dessert person, I made room for their fantastic pie.
Rachel Newquist
Nice diner with an interesting menu. Hi top dishes are served on a large donut. Fried chicken strip with maple bourbon syrup and country gravy was delicious. PIG is pulled pork that has a slightly spicy sauce somewhere between BBQ and adovada. Ice cream cocktails! Not far from a great view along the Mississippi.
Bill Wehling
If I could give it ten stars I would! Fantastic food and friendly staff. One hint…get the milkshake after your meal. They are huge and you need some room for your food!
Joanne Larose
If I could give this more stars, I would. Food was delicious! Their buttermilk fried chicken on a donut was fantastic. Their cocktails were also very good. Got the Dean's sidecar and the Joan Collins. It's the type of place you definitely want to come back to and work your way through the rest of the food and cocktail menu.
andrea ortiz
Has a parking lot but not too large, however there's street parking available. Friendly staff. Big breakfast portions.
Cpt Weeoo
We ordered the Hi-Tops NOTORIOUS P.I.G and the THE MINNEAPPLE BLISS. The look and taste was amazing. A little expensive, but a nice Sunday treat!
Michelle Fate
We were across the street at Laviticus piercing/tattoos and saw the cute looking Dinner, the best discovered restaurant! It was even better than we hoped. Everything was delicious specially the Bailey's coffee , Breakfast sandwich with bacon and lots of it, the best Pancakes!! The fried chicken sandwich was awesome, chicken wild rice soup!! I saw chocolate malts in the tall glass with the big tin full of the leftovers. Hidden treasure for sure!
Jordan Elenz
An awesome classic diner experience. Delicious food at reasonable prices. I got the Hi-Lo 'Gary Cooper' with a side of chorizo patties and my girlfriend got the crispy chicken sandwich.
The Hi-Lo was better than expected (I was expecting a 3 inch donut but got about a 6-7 inch one) and honestly didn't need to get the chorizo patties, but they were still good. The chicken was great and the gravy was savory. The maple bourbon syrup was especially scrumptious.
Chicken sandwich was spiced and fried wonderfully and the pickles and slaw paired very nicely with it.
We saw pies on the menu and if we had room we would have gotten some but maybe next time.
Definitely worth a trip out to experience

This place is fantastic. The ambiance, the food, the staff, everything.
It's very lively at Hi-Lo, and the servers are on top of refills, hot food comes out hot, and cold comes out cold. Tables are turned over quickly, sparkling clean and ready for their next customers.
The food... the food. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled delish. My date had the french toast, and I had the Gary Cooper. Perfection in both. Props to all the hardworking cooks doing glob's work.
I loved the vibe, I loved the food, I loved it all. Five stars.
Melanie
Great diner atmosphere and friendly server: everyone I went with had a great time!
I ordered the fish and chips. The fries and sauces were delicious. Unfortunately, the fried fish tasted over cooked and dry. The breading on the outside of the fish felt like doughy wonder bread - there was no crunch - it had a chewy stringy texture.
I will be back to try their drinks and other meals. I'm looking forward to trying one of their burgers!
Linda Sullivan
The food was good. Had a vanilla malt that was excellent as well as the chicken wild rice soup. The Cuban sandwich was tasty, the pork was a little dry. The wait staff didn't bring extra napkins, we had a little one under one, no spoon or straw. Had to ask, I just assume you'd bring a spoon and straw. After all soup and malt, oh did get long spoon with malt.
Graham Boone
The glazed donut is ridiculously good (I would plan to share it though, unless you enjoy a sugar coma). Otherwise, simple but delicious diner food in a cute old diner building. No complaints. Definitely going back.
Wafer H
Foods are delicious! Love the traditional diner atmosphere!e
Ed Kim
All around great place. Good food, and a killer drinks selection. Friendly staff and great atmosphere!
Tim Berneche
The architecture drew us in, a classic streamline moderne diner beautifully detailed. Our server told us the building was built in the 60s and relocated from Pennsylvania in two parts and added on to a former Taco Bell kitchen. While diners are considered greasy spoons, not the case here. I had the Tennessee (Nashville Hot) Crispy Chicken sandwich with Cole slaw, both very good. Server was very friendly and offered recommendations when asked. For dessert we had the Hand in the Jar pie, a peanut butter pie that was excellent. Overall a really nice experience in a charming neighborhood.

I have been wanting to visit Hi-Lo Diner for a long time, after hearing positive remarks from friends and reading reviews.
I was finally able to make a trip to the dinner tonight with several friends, and was not disappointed.
The restaurant itself is quite memorable. It is modeled after a classic vintage diner, complete with neon and a seated bar. The space is small but surprisingly spacious inside, with plenty of seating for what seemed like the perfect churn of visitors, never a line to be seen but also few empty booths.
The menu is both comfortable and unique, with many staples mixed in to an assortment of creative options (such as the Hi-Top, a donut with savory toppings 🤔).
We ordered the spicy cheese curds to share, a burger, and the Lox and Dam Benedict. Our server was polite, attentive, and quick with service.
I would recommend a night visit for the ambiance and lighting, but it would also be fun in the daylight. 🙂

I’ve only ordered from a food delivery service but the food is so amazing, I had to write a review! Always consistent and fresh. Many customizable options for vegetarian, good portions, and that donut...so good! I need to find time to come eat here in person!
Tamara Wanstall
I went in to the restaurant with my kids excited to get a milkshake. The place seemed very over the top for a small diner. The lady who greeted us was very high strung and had no desire to be nice. It felt like we were a burden walking in, I guess my mask wasn't good enough so she gave me one of the free masks. Another issue was where to sit, she was impatient and a little rude trying to find a place for us to sit. Anyway, I got the Buffalo cheese curds (too hot) the dry rub wings (very good) and my kids got 4 milkshakes and I got 2 alcoholic beverages from their specialty cocktail menu. Nothing was worth raving about. Our bill was 89 dollars. I will not go back.
Young Ali
One of my favorites!! They never fail me, delicious taste, kind servers timely service! And what better to top it off with the energy of the atmosphere! Will definitely continue coming here as always!
Allye Spencer
If you go here, PLEASE ask for Megan. That girl brought alllll the vibes and energy, with stories to match. My friend and I went for some hungover brunch and Megan made it feel like she was a friend just catching up with us. So cool. Also I’ve never had bad food at Hi-Lo, but even if I had, id come back to be served by Megan again.
Laura Rath
My husband and were back at Hi-Lo for brunch the others day and it is still the best. I had the pancakes 🥞 for the 1st time!!! OMG hands down them best I have ever had. My husband tryed it too. He say it is now a requirement to order pancakes when we come here.
Sooo good
Stephanie Weiss
After move dinner at Hi-Lo - great choice! Sat on the large outdoor patio as the weather was perfect for it (and the temp inside the diner was freezing). I had the Cuban sandwich with side of chicken wild rice soup - both were fantastic!!
Jose Cuellar
I came to Minneapolis to visit a friend and her husband. They recommended this place. To be honest this was my favorite food place on my trip. I had a hi-top on their recommendation and was amazing. I got the Gary Cooper. It was a freshly baked donut, no glaze, with three pieces of fried chicken, topped with gravy and maple syrup. Sounds a little weird but probably one of the best things to shove in my mouth. I couldn't recommend this place more. I want to try the other hi-tops dishes next time I go out there. The wait wasn't long even with them having a bunch of people waiting and the service was great. Totally 5/5 stars!
Carolina Margaria
Been to Hi-Lo several times now and the food is truly great. It's a great fusion of high quality ingredients used to make diner dive food with a fresh spin. The atmosphere is clearly foodie/hipster/trendy but manages to mock itself for it at the same time, the end result is a fun quirky place to hang out and eat great food.
Highly recommend any of their cocktails, the hash, and pretty much anything else on the menu. My only complaint is french fries are my life and I wish their fries were crispier.
Mike Otten
Loved it. Heavy food, but delicious.
Dressed up like a million dollar trouper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper)
Had the Gary Cooper. Beefed up Chicken and Waffles with a donut instead. Yum. Everything we had was great and we will definitely be back. Tried the fried chicken sandwich, macaronni and cheese and rib donut, burger, MN roll, and much more. Fun place too and great wait staff!
Cal P
The atmosphere is neat with the old renovated dining car. Smaller space, but doesn’t feel like it’s cramped. It was completely full when we were there but it was comfortable. We waited about 5 minutes to get a table.
The Gary Cooper was delicious. The chicken was breaded nicely and had great flavor when combined with the sweetness of the donut. It was steamy and fresh. The cheese, meat, and pickle in the Bloody Mary was good. The burrito was good -bursting with flavor.
The only gripe would be the service. Our waitress was really odd. Ordered a Bloody Mary and asked for a couple extra olives, who would have thought they’d charge us $2 for two extra olives? Never been charged anywhere else. When she dropped off the bill, every minute she’d come by and ask if we were “all set?” And tried to grab the bill back. Talk about trying to push people out or something?
Daniel Isaac
My friend and I were starving after hiking it out by the Mississippi one Sunday, so we picked out the best rated place in the area. And Hi-Lo did not disappoint.
From the get go, the staff were super friendly and service was quick. We got some amazing buffalo cheese curds with just the right amount of spice, followed by scrumptious fried chicken on their signature donut. To end it all we got their famous dessert hand on the cookie jar, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone with a fondness for peanut butter.
Definitely going to come back again soon!
Mary Casto
Such a cool diner. The atmosphere was really fun and it was quite war which was nice because it was such a cold day. Tex-mex was not as expected, but good.
Brian Rude
A destination for cocktails!
A group of friends and I recently went to the Hi-Lo Diner for lunch. What a great place!!
First of all, they have a beautiful deck to sit on during the warmer months. The sun was intense but the staff had no problem grabbing an umbrella for our table.
The cocktails were amazing. I had the Hi-Loma which they have on tap. Really refreshing on a hot day with just a hint of heat on the finish.
The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because the food was good but not a destination in itself. Worth munching on if you’re there but not making a special trip for.
Thuan Vo
I had to go there a few times before it grew on me. Bloody Mary is REALLY good. Food is also good. If you go during rush hour expect to wait outside and then wait at least 20-30 min for your food. Service is really nice and funny too.
Autumn May
Every possible box checked. So impressed with every detail (other diners often disappoint by being cute but with terrible food) and LOVE that they've preserved its history & kept it from being destroyed.
Truly delicious burger & the spicy cheese cursa blew my mind.
Brandon
I was really excited to try this place because I've heard and read great things about it. We ordered the Gary Cooper and also a Biddy Board. Let. Me. Just. Say... Stop what you're doing and go here to try these out for yourself because words are not going to fully describe the flavor of these. Such amazing food and absolutely love the atmosphere! Felt like a Time Warp, walking in the front doors.
Tonya
Awesome place with super nice gals working there! Have yet to try the famous Hi-Lo donut thing but I'm saving that for next time. Food was great and they have a lot of neat looking cocktails (and some on tap!). I recommend!
Tommy Van Wylen
This place was really tasty and the old school vibe makes it a fun environment. The hi-tops are HEAVY though so make sure you don’t have to walk after eating one. Their Bloody Mary is a good addition to brunch as well.
Lori Rentsch
Three of us had a weekday brunch here recently and the guys liked their Breakfast Burrito and Huevos Rancheros just fine, but my Gary Cooper Hi-Top is not something I could recommend. Bland boring gravy should never be put on top of chicken fingers. If it doesn't add to the flavor, it sure as heck shouldn't take away from the texture. I would definitely order differently if we were to go back. This old-timey diner has other good things going for it, including a real parking lot. (albeit a small one)
Eric Severson
Neat dining experience in a classic diner built in the 1950's, complete with era music and ambiance. The prices are quite high,$13.50 for a burger and $6 for a beer( yes they serve alchohol)and the menu quite small, but the food was excellent. If you ever are wondering what pulled pork or fried chicken covered in syrup on a deep fried doughnut tastes like, this is the place. They do have a good size mixed drink menu(again, higher priced),but the drinks are quite unique. There is also outdoor seating if you don't want the diner experience.
Quynh Nguyen
Liked: the staff are amazing and attentive, the diner interior is all shiny and lovingly restored, the Hi top dishes are quirky and fun, the cocktails intriguing
Dislikes: that the shiny interior reflects a ton of sound on all sides to the tune of 64 dB when the restaurant is full, the bloody Mary has a funky aftertaste
Recommendations: sit outside if the weather is fair and the diner is full. The soundscape inside is intolerable at times. Give the cocktails a try, I've been delighted by all except the bloody Mary. Have a savory hi top if you like sweet and savory the way I do.
Marianne Ellen Spevak
Best date night ever! Adam, my partner in crime, talks about this place all the time. We went together for the first time a few weeks ago and had an incredible experience! We sat at the bar and got the best service in the city. Delicious cocktails, irresistible food, uniquely beautiful restaurant and a style on their own level.
casey carlson
Hi-Lo is probably my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities. I've been coming here regularly since they first opened and there hasn't been a time iv'e walked out of there full and satisfied. Their Hi-tops are creative and delicious, their breakfasts are delectable and their wings are incredible. The banana cream pie is worth my drive from St. Paul by itself. Each time I go, I try to have something different, and recently have really enjoyed their Ice Cream Cocktails. My only complaint is that there can be a long wait during brunch on the weekends. No fault of the restaurant itself, but it's something to be prepared for during the winter months when the tiny entry is already packed with people, and you're left waiting outside in the cold. However, my wait has never been longer than 45 minutes, and the Dogwood coffee across the street is a good spot to pick up coffee if you get too cold. But any time of year, Hi Lo has always been worth the wait.
Henry Nieberg
An absolute institution and must go-to for the Twin Cities. The atmosphere is really fun to be in. The color of the seats, the metal bars, and the rounded corners really make this feel retro but also modern. Fish and chips are incredibly good, with the perfect amount of fried goodness and creaminess. The peanut butter pie is also definitely worth purchasing. My favorite dish is by far the Gary Cooper.
Catie
I am updating from my last review below.
Once again, this place is soooo yummy. Wait times are long, but the food is worth it.
Big complaint was our waitress on Sunday during lunch. She was so incredibly rude and keep walking away from the table before we were done talking to her. She put the bill literally inches away from my face to drop it off. Customer service needs to be improved as this is just as important as the food. Maybe more staff for a busy weekend?
Oh, my goodness. This place is tasty!! The donut, chicken, and gravy was sooooooo good. Everyone was getting a bloody Mary, I bet they are good too. Next time!!
Elizabeth Baur
A must-try in the cities, we just can’t keep ourselves away from Hi-Lo. To be fair, we have at times been frustrated with the wait- there is usually always a wait unless you go at fairly odd times, we haven’t always received great service, I absolutely HATE their take on the Reuben, and they’ve raised the prices a few times, for example the milkshake costs and arm and a leg... although it’s good enough that you can see how they get by with those prices. However, the atmosphere is fun for a date or hosting out of town guests, the hi tops are the perfect brunch entree, and the unique specials will lure you back in over and over again.
Melisa Samuelson-Strand
This is my new favorite place.
The Hi tops are amazing any way you have them. I had the Notorious P.I.G and it is one of the tastiest things I've ever put in my mouth.
My boyfriend had the Pastrami Silo, which was equally delicious. The coleslaw was some of the best we've had.
For dessert we had Hunka Hunka Fool's Gold Love. The peanut butter whipped cream on the side was heavenly, but it was blueberry sauce that really took this Hi top over the top!
We also enjoyed a cocktail flight, which was a great way to try out each cocktail before deciding on the full priced version.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. We can't wait to come back and try more menu items!
Joanne Grebner
Atmosphere was fun ...like eating on a train. Food was unique. Most items, although savory we're on donuts. The soups were terrific.
Brian Shipe
Great food and excellent service. I always suggest people to go here who are from out of town and looking for something good & unique
Jerome T Evans
We scored a spot on the back patio on Sunday afternoon. There was a short wait because they didn't want to stack their servers with too many tables all at once. It isn't a fancy place but seems well kept. The food was delicious. Someone at our table got a side doughnut and insists that I recommend it to others.
Rohan Abraham
Pretty tasty food with some tasty coffee to top it off. Diner had a nice vibe. I was pretty pleased with the tex mex burrito. Waiter was nice but the greeter had a weird vibe. She told me to put on a mask so I did and then she offered me a mask which I thought was weird. I'm not for disposable masks to fill up landfills. Also there was a sign blocking most of the window next to me which made the diner feel a little claustrophobic.
Demetrius Winegarden
Absolutely wonderful service and food. Guacamole is made to order. Malts are like actual, hardy malts. Highly recommend the Black Bottom Banana Creme Pie: definitely the best banana creme pie I’ve ever had. Beautiful space and ambiance.
Pete Boisclair
Went here with one of my best friends, and we have never been here before. Our server, Jack was super nice and friendly and answered all of our questions well. The food was SO delicious, we couldn’t stop taking photos of it all to send to friends to make them jealous! The menu is affordable and the atmosphere is very clean and gives you a feel for a vintage, authentic diner experience. Fast service too! Definitely recommend this place!
SUSHIL MANANDHAR
Tried something new and I got rewarded. This savory donut bun with pulled pork was delish. 😋
Stephanie Serres
Thanks for servings my friends from Canada and Australia! They were so excited to eat at an "authentic" American diner. Everything was great. My only critique is the Mediterranean bowl was a bit disappointing but that is what I get for ordering something Mediterranean at an American diner. Haha.
Vincent Esposito
One of the best breakfast burritos I’ve ever bad. No cost to sub vegan chorizo, really big portion.
Bridgette Thrasher
Fantastic! Exceeded all expectations. There were diverse food choices, definitely something for everyone here. I had the Gary Cooper which was a chicken and waffles type meal. It was excellent, not too sweet, the chicken was perfectly fried and the sausage gravy had a little spice to it. Service was great. We had a group of eight people and they were very accommodating. Can't wait to come back!
Jesse Olson
Love Hi Lo! Shoot! they even hooked up the fam with free kids meals when we skied in last week. Yum Yum😊😍😍 …
Dani Morrison
As small as this restaurant is it still managed to feel larger than it was. The only negative was the lack of many everyday items on the menu so you kind of have to read the whole menu and descriptions to know what you want. (Btw i do not believe they have any restrooms)
Andrea Kiepe
Good food, good service and GREAT cocktails. Both the Joan Crawford and French 75 were delicious. Staff allowed me to zzuszh up the green salad so that it was enough for a meal and it was delightful. Love the patio!
Mr Robberts (robb86)
We were in to for MSRA Back to the 50's classic car show and found this diner online. It is a blast from the past, decor is awesome. The service was top notch and the food tasted as great as it looked. We'll definitely be back if we come next year for the car show.

We were in town to visit the university and remembered that a beloved diner from Gibsonia, near Pittsburgh, was moved to Minneapolis. We had to stop. The diner was as we remembered. The menu was new of course, but had a lot of favorites from diner's past. We opted for a traditional breakfast (Fodero). It was delicious. The breakfast potatoes were extra tasty. The Hi-Lo owner personally came out to greet us! Our waitress was very pleasant. We will definitely stop again when we go back to visit Minneapolis!
Brett Herbers
A great brunch spot! Hard to get seating here at times on the weekends, but it is worth the wait.
Christopher Birkholm
This place provides a true diner experience. It has the traditional counter seating, vinyl booths, breakfast all day favorites and shakes you could die for. They also have a small outdoor patio and a full bar. The food is amazing here at decent prices with great staff. A true staple of the Longfellow neighborhood this is one of the few places you can order French Toast with a Manhattan and be impressed with the quality of both. (The breakfast burrito is also very very good)
Brian Abbott
The hi- lo diner was a great find. This place is mentioned in many books on Minneapolis, and it is well worth the stop. Excellent service, good food and a very sophisticated bar menu. The Alexander Hamilton ice cream drink delicious and the seabreeze summer cocktail refreshing.
Tony Tran
This place is amazing. The food taste great and the staff is supper friendly. update: went again and the menu has changed. this place won’t disappoint. i got the breakfast *fodero*
Sam Herrera
highly instagrammable diner that ISN’T a trap. the food tasted DELICIOUS, was reasonably priced, and came in generous servings. would definitely come back if i were back in the area 💘 …
Alison English
I had a Beyond Beef burger and fries and it was delicious. They serve crinkle fries.
I tried a doughnut for dessert and I don't think it was that good. It was dense, dry, and I had to use a butter knife to cut it. Maybe it was microwaved or something.
The coffee was delicious and the server was attentive.
I'll come back.
Nikki Bufkin
Great service and fantastic food, well worth your time and money. I had the creme brulee and lavender french toast and my companion had eggs Benedict, both were delicious.
Chris Rodriguez
We go pretty much every week due to great service and tasty food. Love it
AL BERRY
The Gary Cooper may be LITERALLY the best thing I've ever eaten! Every time we're in the Twin Cities we make it a point to go to the Hi-Lo Diner for breakfast. Probably my favorite place to eat in The Cities!
Michael Rowley
I was surprised with the very good food. It was like a fine diner. I will come back.
Maria Day
BLT and interesting happy shakes. Nice vibe and friendly service.
McKenzie Brickl
Holy buckets their donuts are huge! We had chicken and gravy, shredded pork and raspberry filled. Way too much food for 4 people. Raspberry filled was delightful. Chicken was over cooked. The pork was good but SPICY! Would definitely return, if only for the novelty.
Gregory Schlee
Wonderful menu! All day breakfast and something for everyone. Service was excellent and friendly. The breakfast burrito and the lox and dam Benedict were great!
Mike Kurfess
Great breakfast in a cozy old time diner setting. Great breakfasts, I had the Gary cooper and the chicken and donut was amazing. It’s really rich but had good balance and a unique and delicious dish. I can’t wait to return and try the rest of the menu and explore other places in the neighborhood.
Steve Jed
Friendly staff, great coffee. Food was delicious! I was not disappointed with the huevos rancheros, until someone else sitting at the counter ordered the biscuts and gravy... that also looked delicious! I guess I'll have to come back again!! Great gem in the neighborhood.
Shoumit Karnik
Great place for brunch. Donuts and drinks are good. Gary Cooper was amazing
Rick Mischka
Great atmosphere, awesome drinks, really good food... You have to try the donuts (made fresh in house). Definitely with a trip.
Truman Gerholdt
I’m from out of town and was looking for a cool dinner to eat. This place was just what I wanted! They make their own fresh pastries. The breakfasts are a fairly large size of good tasting food. Perfect place to brunch after a long night out. They have a good brunch cocktail list, too. Hit this place up if you’re wanting a good diner visit experience.
Nancy R
Their cornbeef hash is amazing. Salty and savory. Adult milkshakes are their specialty...Get the Alexander Hamilton. It's nice, sweet, and boozy. UPDATE: dropped rating to a 3 star from 5 today. Ordered a couple of eggs, hashbrowns, and hollidase sauce and it was out right awful. Hollidase didn't taste like it should...tasted like butter. Everything but the hashbrowns we're dripping in grease. Eggs were cold, sausage lacked seasoning, bacon was cold, and I've felt sick the last three hours since. Coffee tasted burnt. Won't be going back for breakfast for a very very long time...
Kari Dorsher
Best Huevos Rancheros ever! Great pancakes, thick bacon, crispy hash browns and good food. Busy but got seated very quickly. Will come back again and try more of the menu!
S h e i l a C r u z
Everything is tasty. If you decide to get the burrito, make sure you ask for the enchilada sauce either on the side or inside the burrito.
Jerry Smith
If you enjoy the ambience of a real train diner, this one was dismantled, packed up and moved to Minneapolis. The service and food reflect the heart that undertook this endeavor.
Liz Erickson Monson
Great vibe and good service, but very bland food. The only flavor in the hi-tops (dish with a donut base) was sweet. Not worth the hype.
Virgo Monkey
Yummy. The food was good and the staff friendly. Make a reservation if you don't want to wait. Worth the wait though.
Tina Henrikson
Fun retro atmosphere, great service, fantastic food. Pancakes are huge, and chicken wild rice soup is phenomenal.
Elizabeth Shafto
I LOVE Hi-Lo Diner!! The staff is friendly and helpful, even though they are often running a mile an minute. The hi-tops are a must!! I usually get the "Gary Cooper" or the "Notorious P.I.G.". Hi-Lo is one of my favorite places to take friends and family when they are in town. My only wish is that they would add fresh squeezed orange juice to their menu (pretty please!!). If you haven't been to Hi-Lo, you are truly missing out on an amazing breakfast experience.
Nahom Abegaze
It took a little longer than expected to get our table...so, our hostess hooked-up this delicious donut tower called "Bliss"
I immediately forgot how long we waited 😁 …
Chris Frogge
Classic greasy spoon diner with beer, wine, and some spirits. Good food and average service. Prices seemed a bit on the high side but still reasonable.
Ethan Shook
My wife and I came in and sat at the counter. The service was great, although we were warned the kitchen would be a little slow. I got a 1919 Root Beer on tap and my wife got a Coke.
We shared the cheese fries which were delicious, as was my pastrami sandwich and her Gary Cooper (pictured). Great atmosphere and great experience!
Sarah Hamel
This place was okay. Nothing special. I thought their prices were extremely high already. And then they added two different service charges that said this was not a tip. So then my meal ended up being an extra 25-30% of the already expensive meal.
Laura Cina
Got the Velvet Elvis! Bacon, peanut butter and bananas 🍌❤ and the Notorious P.I.G! The pork is so good
tim picking
Great little diner in St. Paul. Lunch on the back patio was delightful with a beer and their signature fare the Hi Top.
Missy Blank
The cocktails were delicious and so was our food. Our waitress was very sweet and made sure we had what we needed. My friends and I had a great time here :)
S M
I was thoroughly impressed with the food and service at Hi-Lo!
I had they're pulled pork with beans and an egg breakfast meal that came on top of a donut. It sounded a little weird in the description but if it was highlighted in the menu I knew I couldn't pass it up. I'm very glad I ordered this because the doughnut was so warm, light and fluffy it added a great experience to the other items without any of the sweetness I was expecting. I can't wait to visit the Twin Cities again and try a few more items here!
Ty Bayles
6 stars if I could! Neat little diner with BIG taste. I highly suggest the Minneapple Bliss high top. Seriously one of the best breakfast dishes I've ever had. Ever.
Alexander Cameron
This an amazing spot for an authentic '50s American diner experience. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and courteous. The food is absolutely incredible and will fill you up very quickly. I cannot recommend Hi-Lo enough and encourage everyone to visit! There is something there for everyone!
Kanisha M.M
OMG this place is even better than expected, I LOVED IT! I went with my friends for breakfast and... Wao, IN LOVE, attention 10, food 100!
Ryan Horstman
Good cocktails in a fun atmosphere. A family-friendly menu with some twists. I just wish the Gary Cooper came with more chicken cuz it was way more bread than I could handle.
kristin hoechst
Just visiting the area, searched for a place to eat, this place popped up. I am so glad it did! Great food and great service! Best Creamy chicken wild rice soup I've tried! Everything thing we had was fantastic.
Grayden Snyder
Awesome vibes and even better food. The combination of pulled pork and donut was mindblowing!
Brian Dougherty
Delightful brunch options. 1st time here and certainly wont be my last. The place wasnt too busy during our visit at about 1pm. Had the Gary cooper, which rocked! The eggs had an interesting taste to them.
Jon Ordaz
It’s got thousands of good reviews for a reason man. Their hi tops are an interesting concept and what first caught my eye; at first it seems like a doughnut made into a crazy breakfast sandwich concoction but in actuality the texture and taste is more similar to that of a biscuit. The portion is very reasonable and the menu is full of heavy hitters so expect to be satisfied.
shakita rimson
The food was like no other place I've experienced before and the music and people were great as well!
Sonja Freeman
The food here is so excellent! There is usually a wait but it's worth it. I love everything I've had, and the lox & hi-tops are my favorites!
Michael Minino
Very small diner, but 100% worth the wait. Food was so delicious I got a stomach ache from eating too fast.
Carolyn Gratzke Brown
Excellent place! Love the menu and service is great. Craft cocktails are fabuloustaste even better during half price happy hour!
Justin Magee
We are staying at the great wolf lodge. I am from Iowa. I was looking for something a bit different and local that wasn't some chain restaurant yet had a decent variety of meals to pick from. This place does not disappoint! Variety, decent prices, portions and great flavor. My compliments to this establishment and it's staff. Service was great as well. They were a bit busy and the waitress was nice enough to bring us a complimentary donut while we were waiting. Made my 5 yr old son extremely happy. This place is definitely on my list anytime I visit the twin cities. Keep up the great work!
ale p
I love love love this place, diner look to it with delicious comfort food! The hi-tops its what you should always go for! Oh and the twist to the diner look would be an excellent cocktail bar! Delicious! Johnny and Daniel definitely know what they are doing behind the bar!
Henry May
Worth a trip just to sample one of their signature items, the Hi-Top. It's classic fry bread with various toppings to please any palate. Sit inside at booths or counter or enjoy the patio. Nice selection of tap beers.
Pradnya Chavan
Seems to be pretty popular amongst localites. I tried their Mediterranean bowl. It was tasty and unusual option for a diner. I am glad they had it..
Ellena Le
This place is like a dream come true! The food here is amazing and delicious, the place is so beautiful with the lights and the 50s vibe. I'm surprised this place isn't more popular! The service is also so sweet and kind, and always makes sure our time there is good. I love going here with my friends now and i definitely would recommend it to to others too!
Pros Vegetarian Options, Service, Food, Decor
Cons ??? Maybe the virgin Bloody Mary
James Palka
Funky, lively atmosphere. Varied menu. Great staff.
David Rhone
Good food. Noisy place filled with yuppies. Different menu than usual. Well trained staff.
Tarja Anchor
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the service. Really cool original sixties diner. Peter shared some information about the conservation of the dinner and served us in very pleasant manner, food came fast and was delicious. We’ll be back ;)
William Brandow
For historic hole-in-the-wall diners, this place is super clean. I also had what probably amounts to the best cup of diner coffee I've ever had (I think they serve Peace coffee?). I'm always on the search for a good brunch place, and this diner didn't disappoint.
Richard Webb
Food & service were great - ambiance & decor is out of this world. Loved it
Luke
Delicious comfort food. The Gary Cooper is artery cloggingly amazing and the Biddy Boards are the best French toast I have ever had in my life.
Grason Cheydleur
Really enjoyed my visit here. Nice patio area and friendly service. I had a summer salad which was simple but very tasty.
Allison Coyle
I love this place! They have something for everyone it's hard for me to get anything besides their cornbeef hash. First time I went I shared the Minneapolis Bliss hi top, and it was absolutely amazing, definitely hard to top. Until, I went back and had this Venue Pie Trap, which is doughnut hot fudge sunde. This thing is worth ruining your diet for, so good. Needless to say I can't wait to go back.
James B
A lot of good options for food and beverages. The Mediterranean Grain bowl was surprisingly excellent, one of the best in Minneapolis
Noah Bertilson
"Really good" - my girlfriend
Loved the Gary Oldman (chicken and gravy on a glazeless donut, more or less), the bolero breakfast, and the glazed donut. Fabulous flavors all around. Would recommend.
It wasn't completely obvious from the outside, but if there are people waiting, that doesn't mean they can't seat you right away. I assume those waiting outside were waiting on to-go orders, but maybe we did skip the line.
Ethan Schmitz
Hi Top with chicken and gravy was the most unique combo I've had in a long time. Definitely worth the stop. They have great drinks too!
Dani Ferreira
Returning customer all the way from Florida, this place is fantastic, the food is so delicious, a well thought out menu! Iconic diner,a must stop by!!
Todd Gardner
Fun diner spot, combine 50's vibe with modern foodie culture. Nice cocktails and creative breakfast dishes. Always busy.
Hue Eryigit
Great service and very friendly staff. Food was absolutely fantastic! The diner is very cosy and we had a great time here. Highly recommended!
VANESSA Lenzmeier
This is a unique setting for a restaurant. I enjoyed it very much. The service was great, the servers were friendly and the food was delicious. The prices are high. Breakfast range roughly between $13 and $17 a meal. However, I do think it's worth it if you are looking for some unique meals in a cool setting. You are going to pay a little bit more for food at a non-chain restaurant.
Jason Holle
Fun, cozy diner. Food is so good! Can't wait to return and try something else. Everything on the menu sounded good.
David Shaw
A real diner brought from out east. Great breakfast and burgers plus bar service featuring boozy shakes if you want.
Danielle Olson
My grandmother and I visited here for a Sunday brunch after church. Obviously this is a busy time for any diner, and the business was fine by us. However, I was a bit concerned with cleanliness. Our waiter forgot silverware at first, and when we requested some he handed us our forks and knives with his bare hands touching the part our mouths should eat off. Water refills were a bit iffy, as we weren’t sure who’s was who’s and how he kept them straight when he refilled them. Everyone was super nice and the wait was not bad for how stuffed the place was, but I would like to see the hygiene and cleanliness improved.
Nicole Johnson
The atmosphere was awesome! The service and the food was wonderful! We ordered salmon Benedict, French toast, a Bloody Mary and a coffee. Everything tasted great!! Very flavorful😀😀will definitely come back again! ( they also have an outdoor patio! ) …
Will Downs
Nice staff good food. Would come again. Really hot guy sitting across from me rn
Greg Floyd
Very laid back, a bit too much maybe. The food was great but the menu is very limited, so don't bring your picky eaters. Price point is on the cheaper end, around $10-$15 per person
Joe
Food was good. Elijah was great. Nice little spot :)
Katherine LaFleur
A+ service with fantastic food! Everyone in our group was more than pleased with the meals they choose; we'll be back for sure!
Kristin
It's a fun place to visit. The milkshakes my kids ordered were really good. The food was also really good. We all ordered something different. Our order took awhile to get to our table. Not busy at the time. (Maybe there was only one cook.) I ordered a Bloody Mary and that was really good. Other than than the food taking awhile, it was a great time.
Nick Koons
Good food. It’s a small place so expect a wait during peak hours. There’s a couple things to do nearby to kill time. Good and drinks were good. The vegan Huevos Rancheros were good, but they don’t have vegan egg, so not quite huevos. I would like to see one more unique vegan option on the menu, but otherwise the food was very good. Seating inside is tight due to the size, so get comfy with your friends. Otherwise happy with the experience and love the vibe.
DeMarco Davidson
Great food, great service. Everything was seasoned perfectly!
Anika Logan
Hot chocolate. Amazing 💙 French toast and fruits. And Adrian was very nice (hope I didn’t spell the name wrong) 🙃 Me and my friend will definitely be back …
jordan sorenson
Do yourself a favor and get anything on the menu. Good and atmosphere isnon point. Cute little tiki hut covered outdoor patio.
Gary Cohen
This is one of our favorite breakfast places. There is something for everyone. Family, couples or eating at the counter solo. Great destination if you are biking the river.
Alexa Pulliam
Food is pricey but the atmosphere is cool, the people are nice, and the pie is good. If you're used to Minneapolis pricing then 10/10 would recommend. If you're not used to Minneapolis pricing, you've been warned.
D.S. Holmstrom
I wish this combination of excellent food and prompt, kind, attentive service was in every airport. I really do
Courtney Moody
The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and the cocktails are unquie and delicious!! I felt so comfortable and they took great care of me as a team! Teamwork so important in any restaurant, I'm glad they all work great together 🙂 I will definitely be back when I'm in town and will always take friends and family when I have them with!
Curtis Albrecht
Hi-Lo Dinner is a great place for traditional comfort food and some twists thrown in to keep you guessing. I most recently ordered a Gary Cooper: fried chicken on top of their unique donuts - very tasty. Unfortunately, given the omicron variant, Hi-Lo is entirely "to-go" so any food items that are supposed to be crispy/crunchy is less so.
Fan Jiang
The Venus Pie Trap is totally worth ordering. Not overly sweet and hits the spot. I finished 3/4 of it at the diner. It doesn't look very big, but it heavy.
Daniel Acevedo
This place is awesome. The first thing I notices was the 50's diner ambience. Next thing I noticed was the awesome music over the house speakers. The food was delicious and had a nice presentation. If I'm in the area again, I will visit.
Matthew Cruz
The server was friendly, the atmosphere is fun, and the food was amazing! You won't find the Hi-Tops anywhere else! 😄 Go check them out …
Jordan Babcock
Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, full of happy people, and simple-great food. Prices seem good for a city- $7-$17, french toast to dinner!
Alexandra Crawford
No better place to get a donut or a bloody mary. I suggest both as they are amazing
LiberatedGentleman
I love the classic dining. Experience and the ability to eat in a 1950 syles building/restaurant
Stacey Johnson
For a diner the prices are a little steep but the one saving grace is the food is so good
Douglas Dorson
The service was great and my Joan Collins cocktail. The food was just ok. And a table of 12 or 14 were seated next to us and behind us was the noisy 12 year olds. Very annoying but that can't be helped the food on the other hand was nothing to return to
Bnel
Gary cooper taste good and well balanced, I wish the chicken have a little bit more seasoning but overall it’s great. The waitresses were very kind. A++
Matt Solomon
The food and coffee was delicious. My server Amira was awesome as well. Highly recommend.
Alison Guthrie
A definite must! The atmosphere is super cool, clean and welcoming. Aris is a gracious server! The food is out of this world delicious and unique.
blaise finnegan
Can't pass up the Gary cooper at this place. Amazing fried dough, fried chicken, gravy, and syrup. Amazing breakfast or brunch item!
C. John Hildebrand
We had a great server but the food was slow coming out and then lukewarm. Unfortunately, the huevos rancheros was also disappointing tastewise. Thankfully the shake was good. Hope the food is better next time.
Ella Renner
Cute retro style restaurant, very busy on the weekends!!! (Not sure if they take reservations though?) Amazing food!
Rebecca Berkowitz
I had the Tex Mex breakfast burrito and the taste was excellent the ingredients were fresh and it was a large sized burrito. The male who took out order was excellent and very on point service.
Troy Bagley
We stopped here recently, and I had to say that all the entrees just looked so good. Even though it was hard to decide, I ordered the biscuit and gravy with some french toast to go with it. It seemed my eyes were bigger than my stomach. But at least I had an extra meal for lunch the next day. From when we walked to when we left the servers were just really friendly, and made sure we were enjoying our meal. So worth going back to again sometime soon.
Jason Olinghouse
Great roadside style diner with an elevated twist. Inventive food and cocktail creations await at this standalone gem. Lovely little patio which is road side but shaded by several old growth trees that provide great shade on a sunny day. Road noise was minimal at 1:00 in the afternoon. Service was fast and quite friendly.
Morgan Shryock (morgzey)
Really cool atmosphere, friendly staff, and amazing food! Good place if you want that neighborhood diner feel.
Kelly Van Eschen
Love the Hi-Lo! Great breakfast / brunch offerings with food and cocktails. The lavender french toast was delicious and make sure you grab a slice of the banana cream pie!! Nice patio or indoor diner ambiance.
Matthew Erickson
Retro diner with fun food and drinks. For more detailed food reviews check out fancydinner.club and follow us on Instagram @fancydinnerclub
Tim Perisic
This place in awesome. I don't think there's a bad choice on the menu. Chicken sandwich with the absolute best fries ever is my favorite.
If you're in the area and hungry, this is a must try!
Brian Bandelin
Great ambiance. I had the biscuits and gravy, which was bland. Good service though and the menu variety was very appealing. I would return.
Nico Samuelson
I’ve never eaten here, but it sounds really good!
Danni Petersen
Great food, friendly staff! The ice cream cocktails are delicious!
Tyler Ash
Pretty dang good. Had the Hi-Lo donut with the fried chicken , delicious
Geoff Edwards
Great food and friendly service. Pancakes are a meal unto themselves.
Erick
Sweet retro diner vibe with amazing customer service and friendly staff. I went with the classic Benedict but got to sneak a taste from the fried chicken hi-top (fried chicken on top of a donut), their speciality breakfast item. Too sweet for me but I can see how it's a crowd pleaser!
Albert Danielson
Fun, retro aesthetic. Food is typical diner fare, although definitely better than the typical diner. Can get pretty busy and crowded, but otherwise a pleasant experience.
Dustin Milbrath
Amazing comfort food! Bring your appetite!
Lame Bears
Our server Laura was amazing. Working in a kitchen myself i understand the frustrating when it comes to handing out orders. She was very welcoming, provided service with a smile and a great attitude. Since the kitchen didn't have glaze made up and my fiance's order was already out and eaten she was gracious enough to take the cinnamon roll off. Will definitely be coming back just for the service from LAURA!
Drew LittleMountain
There's not enough time in a day to enjoy all the goodness on their menu!
Jayden Jones
Wonderful food, lovely staff, and all at a really great price! Would definitely recommend if you're into classic American food and decor.
Fòòdi .
Man dis the best one to come for breakfast the toast breads are the most delicious one I've ever tasted.
kira lewis
We’ve been let down before. Driving across the country will show you some very different diner experiences. We knew as soon as we sat down that Hi-lo was something else. Between an excellent eggs Benedict and a superb Bloody Mary this diner made me feel some type of way.
Tristan Teitler
Coming from the East Coast, I live and die by the Diner. I’ve been here twice so far and it’s definitely the best Diner I’ve been to in MN. If the food stays so consistently delicious, I’ll probably buy a shirt soon!
cairo shetka
Good selection and it's all been decent in my experience. The buffalo cheese curds are fantastic
Kerry Schmidt
Indoor and outdoor seating, comfy booths, full bar with a great selection of drinks, great food! We had The Commercial and the Cuban. Fries were so good! Next time I'm trying the fried chicken and a malt!
Jennifer Weinberg
Such a fun place! In addition to being super-hip and cool, the service was above and beyond... When there was a delay in the kitchen [we were there at their busiest time] they even brought us a free doughnut and comped our drinks! Delicious food too!
Shelby Manson
Just bring back the disco fries and meatloaf! Country gravy and bbq are not proper replacements. We miss the diner but have no reason to come back yet. Service is amazing and drinks are great
Oliver Jonelis
Diner standbys with a flair. The inside is decorated in classic diner motif, while outside seating is comfortable and fun. Lighting strung over outside seats makes for a great late night meal. Friendly and attentive staff. Every meal we saw delivered looked better than the last one.
E
The food is sooo delicious! Every bite was a religious experience. The eggs were an afterthought I didn't need.
Arnold Rossa
Great service, delicious dish. The style is a vibe
David Tran
Very cute diner ambiance. I had the Gary Cooper. I found the fried chicken to be quite delicious with its panko breading but the combination with a large donut was just a bit too sweet and too heavy for me.
Heather Bullinger
Great food, giant portions, large menu, and great service!
Samantha Ann
Everything I've eaten here is delicious! The food is definitely made with love🥰
The cocktails are pricey but well worth it, staff is attentive and friendly(Also kid friendly as well) I would recommend stopping in if you haven't already Cheers! …
Anna
REALLY cute diner car breakfast spot! Outdoor patio is nice too with a bit of a tropical feel.
Food and drinks are a little pricey, but very good (although I think the hasbrowns are a little underwhelming)
There's usually a wait on the weekends but the surrounding neighborhood is good for walking around while you wait.
Jessica Florac
Great atmosphere, food, and cocktails. Service is good, but expect a wait (especially during the weekend brunch hours). Order one of their signature hi-tops, preferably the Gary Cooper, and thank me later. You also can’t go wrong with the hash stuffed hash.
If you’re looking for dinner, Hi-Lo won’t disappoint. Make sure you try one of their cocktails, too!
We recently ordered takeout during the COVID-19 pandemic and were very impressed. Can’t wait to be back when the stay-at-home order is lifted.
Rick Thompson
All I have to say is start with the spicy cheese curds and it doesn't matter what else you get but that doesn't take away from the rest of the menu 👌 …
Bobby Long
Good Food, Good Service, Very Cool Environment, Moderate Prices.
Stephanie Martin
Really excellent experience and even better food. From the outside you expect typical greasy spoon fare but it's much better than that, plus they have vegan and vegetarian options that go beyond a veggie burger.
Karlie D.
Service was great! Food was well thought out and interesting. The drinks won the show, try a sloshy or 3. This place is legit!
Xis Lee
Overall food is ok. My husband had the Gary Cooper and I tortilla with beans and mex sausage. We both felt that it was lacking flavors. To be honest #Sonnybestfoodreview came there so we had to try it!
Stephen Conway
Based on reviews here, I should give Hi-Lo
another try. I’m a big diner fan and went to Hi-Lo twice in its early months. My wife and I found the food, including diner standbys such as meatloaf, nearly inedible, so maybe they needed to iron out the early wrinkles. I’ll give it another try. Thanks
Taejana Schalesky
My boyfriend and I have gone here a couple times when visiting the area. We're both vegetarian, and they have great options for us. It tastes amazing! The restaurant itself is so cute. The last time we were there, we had Ryan as our server and he was so nice and helpful!
Debra Allen Norum
A diner with good comfort food! Got to sit under the tiki umbrella outside and enjoy a wonderful Cuban Sandwich with a cup of wild rice soup. Sooo good! Out waiter was very sweet, attentive and not pushy. It's our 4th time here and never disappointed.
Lydia Stark
this place is so charming. the service was really great and the food was even better. yum
Jessica Elliott
Great service. Fast and friendly. The food was delicious - great eggs benedict! The atmosphere of inside was really nice as well. Will certainly be coming back!
Rebecca Goldsberry (Becky)
I ate here and had the Eggs Benedict with ham and hash browns. It was SOOOO good. I even overate a little bit because I didn't want to atop, it was that good.
The eggs were cooked perfectly and they looked beautiful. The hash browns were obviously made fresh, and were not like typical diner hash browns. They we're both crispy and soft, and all together delicious.
I sat at the bar, since I was a solo diner. The service was great and my server was just attentive enough, without ignoring me, and letting me eat and read my book.
The diner itself is small, and has a cute, eclectic atmosphere. They also serve cocktails and wine.
Anne Chatelaine
Went with my cousin, she had a grilled cheese and a mint oreo malt, I had one of my favorite summer time sandwiches, a BLT! with fries. Ranch on the side. Oh, my cousin also had a side salad. To drink, I had some Iced Tea! As a side note we had put in some time planting flowers along the sidewalk, so my meal HIT THE SPOT! LOVED THE 70'S, 80'S TYPE OF MUSIC PLAYING AS WELL.
Morgan Chapin
Get the donut to go - you won’t be disappointed!
Corrina McCarron
I've been to Hi-Lo 3 times, twice for breakfast, once around 3pm. The food is really good. Large portions. Good variety. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Good atmosphere. Friendly staff. My only complaint is that it took a pretty long time to get my food when I went there at 3pm. The restaurant was not busy so I'm not sure why.
Kassandra DeBoer
Fantastic food as always and wonderful attentive service. Great outdoor seating too!
Felicia Gavin
Thank you so much Tara( Hi Low F-12 Airport), for allowing me to taking a meeting in your closes section. Your were very understanding and went above and beyond to help with a last minute requested and providing a great breakfast. I tried to follow the company website but found it hard to post review. I truly hope my comments get back to you .... Great Customer service.!!!
Kevin Chun
Excellent service. Delicious food. Hope to go back
Camille Thomas
Great food.
Toby Martin-Kohls
I had a high expectations for this place. Did not live up to them but the food is still good and the feel for a diner is excellent. Hard to find parking around Lake Street sometimes so you might have to walk a block or two during busy hours but not too bad.
Paul Economon
Have made the place a delightful experience with the best Crispy Chicken Sandwich and fries in Minnesota!
The staff are the friendliest in all the midwest.
Summer Singer
I love the music here, last time I went they were playing The Doors. Morning cocktails and super delicious food keep me coming back here when I am in town. I had the biscuits and gravy, which I thought were a little weirdly sweet tasting, but besides that no complaints. Grilled cheese is also a favorite of mine here.
Awesome fun and young atmosphere here.
Megan England
The food and service overall is absolutely fantastic. Their prices are moderate, think upscale Perkins, the drinks can be pricey but that's a given. They also mark their menus with gluten free or vegetarian, which is beyond helpful. It can be a tad difficult to find parking, but well worth it.

I heard a lot of hype about this place, but my visit was pretty lack-luster.
My friend pointed out that there was a gassy odor when we walked in. Not sure what that was about. Food took a while to come out and our waitress wasn’t too friendly either.
The food was pretty good though. Interesting take on hash browns, maybe a bit too crunchy for my liking but still good. Big sausage links, and good toast.
I’d try it again but I definitely wasn’t very impressed with my first visit.

Absolutely LOVE Hi-Lo. The atmosphere is so fun. I'm a big fan of diners to begin with, but this one is just lovely. My husband and I went there for breakfast and had the Gary Cooper, as well as the stuffed hash. I thought they were both excellent, but would HIGHLY recommend the Gary Cooper. I never thought that I would enjoy a glazed donut mixed with chicken gravy so much. :)
Patrick Plank
Food could use some flavor. Server was excellent. A bit noisy too.

Fun place. coffee was good, waitstaff good about coming around to refill. Not a huge breakfast selection. The chicken and biscuit was chix tenders over a donut, glaze maple sugar and all. Was tasty but not much protein.
Other diners friendly, chatty, etc. Our waitress was good natured to our humor.
We'll return but I want to try all the diners around town.
Sara Kelly
Great brunch. And great cocktails and dinner. No matter the time of day, this place is a great choice.
Nellie
This is one of my favorite places of all time... and you can tell it's other peoples', too, since there is always a wait. The food is a mix of diner and high end dishes, with interesting twists on classic breakfast foods. My favorite is the breakfast burrito, but there is something for everyone. A good place for vegetarians, and I'm not quite sure but I think there would be plenty of options for vegans. A great place!

The look & vibe was classic "diner" which is nice. Our server was friendly and attentive. I had the MacRib which is one of their "hi tops" using fried pastry dough which is very good. As good and unique as it was, it was out-shined by the basic hi-lo burger my wife ordered. That burger was pretty much the best burger we've ever had; everything about it was great (seasoning, cooked, bun, toppings, sauce). The drinks looked good but we just enjoyed our ice water. I recommend this place and I recommend you not pass up their basic hi lo burger.
David Mattson
The hi tops are amazing and even my girlfriend who usually doesn’t venture to far outside the normal offerings loves getting their savory hi tops. The burgers are probably one of the most underrated items on the menu, they are up there with some of the better burgers in the city. Can’t beat the great atmosphere either. A truly unique restaurant that always hits the comfort food spot.
Cole Carter
The food here is greesy American with a little twist. Gravy fries are awesome. Cheese curds were to die for. All the single portions were enough for two! The atmosphere is warm and upbeat. Our server was over qualified for this restaurant, she was amazing.

You tend to get what you expect with pie. The passion fruit pie was a wonderful surprise. Exploding tender pastry crust, cream cheese, passion fruit custard topped with whipped cream with cardamom and toasted coconut. Holy sh*t good. The chocolate bottom banana cream pie was excellent(same crust). Hand in the Jar is a chocolate peanut butter custard and it's deadly. Good coffee, cute, tiny little booth for two, great decor. I've been before for the pulled pork donut for dinner which was awesome. Fun place.

I hear all of the hype too. I just don't think Hi-Lo is worth it. The food isn't that great. The prices are too high. The seating is too limited. Yes, the old diner car feel is cool. I also think that some of the Hi Tops are pretty good. And, probably the best part is their cocktail drinks. They do a good job there.
All considered, I don't like going to a place that I have to wait forever, be squished in my seat, overpay for my meal, and get food I don't really love. That is why I think it is a good novelty experience to go back in time but it is not a place I repeatedly visit.
Bekah Johnson
They went above and beyond for my confusing/annoying delivery order on my birthday. This kind of care and service is hard to come by. And I chose this place for my bday meal, y'all. Excellent.
**Also, while my girlfriend was getting off the phone with them, she accidentally told the person working that she loved them.***

Went to Hi-Lo for breakfast today was very excited from all of the new reviews and my wife and I had not been there in awhile. Service was fantastic! Not impressed by the rest of our experience. It has not been well maintained since it opened, It used to be so clean when we first went. Chairs were filthy none of the chrome was cleaned, floors looked like they've never been mopped or waxed. Window sill was dirty there were planters with dirt out of them just sitting there at the front entrance. All that could have been looked past had the food been better. Poached eggs were not runny but solid on my eggs Benedict, the English muffin was not toasted and the hollandaise sauce was very watery without much flavor. Bloody Marys were very bland with just a lemon, lime and 2 olives nothing fancy about the hi-lo house bloody...... So I would not be so picky for a $30 breakfast but for $55 with one bloody Mary each the food and drinks should have been much better. My wife said that her meal was good, she had high-top pulled pork.

Great place to eat. Staff was nice and helpful

Our family's current favorite spot for breakfast fare. Love the old-timey, restored dinermakes for a fun/unique atmosphere. As for the food, the hash stuffed hash is outstanding and the huevos rancheros makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The rest of my family loves the hi-tops, they always look really delicious but I've yet to try one for myself. If you're extra hungry and a fan of poutine, do yourself a favor and get an order of disco fries; they're darn good.
Tim Wolfe
Three stars strictly for the service, in fairness my waitress was very good. Zero stars for the food. I had the Gary Cooper with a side of bacon. The food was very bland, no flavor whatsoever. The chicken was tough, you couldn’t cut it with a fork and barely with a regular knife. I was disappointed in the bacon. For $4.50 as a side, you should expect better quality bacon.
Epsilon Peters
Cool shiny diner with great food and drinks.
Tracey Fredrick
I have been here for breakfast and lunch and have had two wildly different experiences. Breakfast was fantastic. The food was great and the service was exceptional. Came in for lunch the other day and the experience was quite different. Expect a wait at lunch time (which I am fine with, it is a small place after all). The food we ordered was bland and messy and our server was mediocre at best. Waited nearly 50 minutes to get our food and about another 20 after we were finished for our server to notice we were done.
Final verdict: would definitely come back for breakfast, probably not for lunch or dinner.
Daniel Randolph
This is a very cool looking place. The service was fair. The staff was pleasant but not very prompt and did not take any effort to describe rhe unique menu. The food was just ok. Seems like they are trying to hard to be unique and not hard enough to just taste really good. The pancakes were the best part of our dinner. We also had a few cocktails that were similar to the food, fine but nothing to rave about.
It's not super expensive either.
All in all, our meal was fine but not enough to make us want to come back.
Gloria Love
The service was amazing, the food was so delicious. I ordered the Beyond Burger with a side salad with lemon pepper dressing and it was so good! I was literally trying to control my taste buds with this meal. Glad to know there's still good food around the neighborhood I grew up in.😊😊😊😊😊 …
Kiya A.
The food was very good, but the booths are very close together that being my only complaint. The staff were very kind and attentive.
Amanda Boese
Super fun wait staff and delicious food! The hi-tops are delicious, especially the savory ones (don't mistake it for food piled on a glazed donut, it's not). The diner vibe is really neat, but seating is quite limited, so expect to wait if you're trying to get in during peak times.
SerpentVX
Side menu is where it's at. Get a pancake and some sausage links and you're set. The donut things are fun every once in a blue moon but sometimes they have things like bone-in ribs in the middle so am I supposed to eat each thing separately or what's the deal here?
Walt Cygan
We had a Saturday morning breakfast at the Hi-Lo. Everything was very good with a couple of exceptions. The bacon was outstanding. Thick-cut and crisp, just like I like it. On the other hand, the toast was just OK, and there was no jam offered with it. The service was very good. The atmosphere is very comfortable. Overall, it was a breakfast that was very close to excellent.
Scott Straw
We came as a large group; inside seating worked OK but we ended up switching to the patio. Both were nice. Everyone ordered something different, and each was pleased with the flavor and presentation. My wife is gluten free; she ordered the pastrami sandwich without bread; I sampled, and would recommend it (my choice next time!)
Justin Dybedahl
This place was really interesting. The food was great and after reading the menu, some of the stuff makes you wonder how it could ever work and taste good. The most whackiest thing I saw on the menu was the hi-tops. They are made on top of a giant donut. I ordered the country fried steak hi-top which was one of the specials for that day. It sounded like it wouldn't work but in the end, it was actually quite good. The donut was sweet and was an interesting choice for a dish like this. The sweetness of the donut actually played really well with the richness and saltiness of the gravy and steak. In the end I was happy I decided to order it. My wife got the corn beef hash which was superb. The chicken fingers looked amazing too. We also ordered one of the Venus fly traps for dessert. It was amazing. The staff was super friendly and we're always by to check on us. Overall I was surprised by this place and would definitely come back.
Teresa Roberts
Enjoyable experience. Good food good service, cool ambiance
Dino Dan
I had high expectations for this place, I dont know if that's what did it for me. I ordered a texmex burrito and one of their donut things, a hitop. The burrito had great ingredients and was pretty great with the textures. It was very bland though and I was quite sad. It looked beautiful and seemed like It would be great but just missed. The notorious P.I.G. was okay. The donut was huge and tasted pretty good, but the pork was also bland. Their service is great and the cheese curds they serve are pretty amazing. It is a niche place, its diner theme is amazing but I feel like I came on a bad day or something. I will be going back to see if this was a fluke or not. There is big talk about the donut dishes they make.
Emily
Super fun vibe! This place makes you want to watch Grease and sing "you're the one that I want". I love their alcohol selection and how they're prepared all cute. Keeps this old school Diner chic! The food is good, the menu is vast which allows for many types of people to enjoy the food. Loved the donut idea- mixing sweet and savory. The only thing I didn't care for was their mashed potatoes. Other than that, I really liked this place!
Amy Jarrell
Excellent service. The food options are a little outside of what I would normally like, but they make it taste really good anyway. Prices are reasonable. It's a little tight seating, which is understandable, but mildly uncomfortable. I do wish there were a couple more "normal" things on the menu. But I would never turn them down as an option.
Arlyn Huber
Got us seated quickly and had amazing food with great service! Denver omelet was best omelet I’ve had in a long time , hash browns were perfectly browned and coffee was strong.
Cameron Bolender
Tasty and inventive menu! Classic diner dishes, offered alongside creative interpretations of the theme. The outcome is awesome food and great service! Personal and unrushed, while keeping a brisk pace. The booths are comfy too. A special place all around.
Oren Shapiro
Chicken and gravy hi top was amazing. But would recommend the pulled pork instead for a less sweet-centered meal.
Tim Olson
Hi-Lo is the best, good drinks, good specials, amazing food!
John Hamm
Food was delicious. Service qmwas quick and cheerful. The diner has normal diner food plus Midwest classics and some unique items as well. I had a chicken item on top of their signature donut type item. Covered in maple syrup. Can't go wrong there. I would've liked more chicken, but the food was quite good for everyone in my party
Jason J. Ross
I will return to try the standard menu. I got to try this place for the first time after a concert. Atmosphere is hip, and retro as you'd expect. Our food was great, and not room temperature as others have said. The portions on the late night happy hour menu were disappointing, and not very cheap. Service was on part with a diner, not great but not bad in any way.
Margie Bodas
What a fun and tasty experience! Great service. Fun menu. Excellent food. . .and plenty of it. Loved the french toast and the potato chip eggs! Definitely would go back there. And would love to try the drinks on their menu, too!
Via Travelers
Salmon eggs Benedict is superb! Super cute place.
Sarah Olson
Delicious food and drinks. service was excellent.
Adam Rollin
This very clean and refurbished 1950s-era diner attracts a crowd! The menu has surprisingly complex and tasty creations, and employees are warm and helpful. Despite the small size, it doesn't feel crowded.
I got The Commercial, a brisket on two flaky croissants with mashed potatoes and a special white sauce. I'll certainly go back to try breakfast and dessert, Portions are so large that I didn't dare try them out today!
Rich Hefferan
Service was wonderful. Prices were very reasonable. The food was decent, but not great. The air conditioning was not keeping up with the crowd that showed up. It was very uncomfortable at 7:30 AM at 78 degrees outside. The classic ambiance is great, but upgrade your a/c. All that chrome loses its charm when a little sun makes it an oven in the dining area, which just shouldn't happen with that mild of an outside temp.
J May
Excellent service. Nice patio. Indoor seating is tight for luxury-sized people. VERY LOUD indoors, outdoors is fine - the building blocks the sound from Lake St. Fun food options, including gourmet donuts. Mixed drinks are fun and tasty
Allen Blaylock
Old diner from out west refurbished and brought to Minneapolis. Very cool look and feel. Came just for deserts but food choices looked good. Waitress was friendly. Sat at the bar which was fun. Milkshake was delicious and served in a glass with almost an extra double in the mixer tin provided as extra.
Michael Schmidt
This was our first visit to Hi-Lo and it was a mind numbing experience. Mind numbing in the sense that whoever came up with ideas for their meals had to have been seriously high in the 60's with extreme munchies. Their speciality is a large fried donut topped with whatever happened to be on hand. The Gary Cooper, for example: two pieces of buttermilk fried chicken with gravy. My wife thought her pancakes - about the size of a frisbee-- were the best she has ever eaten. My Hash Stuffed Hash (hash browns, corned beef hash topped with two eggs) was a little crispy for my liking.
The portion sizes are huge. You have to promise yourself this the first and last meal of the day. Coffee flowed freely.
It was busy when we got there but we were seated right away and service was fast. Despite it being busy, we didn't feel rushed.
Overall is five stars because I can't give it four and a half. The half deduction is for the guilt I felt after eating there and being so far away from the gym.
Robbie St. Louis
The food tastes great, and is well put together. The atmosphere is chill and feels like a diner should. Service, I believe may depend on which server you are assigned though. Our's was mediocre at best. The wait times on food were a little ridiculous, and a better server would have been better prepared to communicate delays and times to us. The prices seem a little high for me, but I am not from the area. That being said, they still receive a strong 4 out of 5 for excellent atmosphere, taste, and presentation. Recommendations for improving kitchen times and some hospitality training for serving staff.
Cassandra Corona
Food was great . Portions could’ve been a little bit more bigger. But I really love it. I am a very picky eater
justin holl
Excellent diner food in a genuine retro diner! The food is superbly executed and includes many diner staples as well as fresh and unique variations on the like. Full liquor bar makes your favorite cocktails and they serve beer in a bottle or from a tap. The staff is friendly and professional. They are known for their pie (never had) but they also make a great glazed donut (had that). Try the hash stuffed hash. Vegetarian options are available!
Teal Walters
A cute, traditional diner in a train car like building. If that is what you are looking for, you'll love the atmosphere... definitely a casual spot.
Our waitress was friendly and honest about gluten contamination when I asked. There are gluten free items on the menu. However, those with Celiac should be cautious about cross contamination. I ended up ordering eggs, hashbrowns, and sausage. I just asked to have the chef use a fresh cooking utensil and cook away from other foods on the grill top.
Food was yummy and tastes like a traditional American breakfast.
Mark Kivimaki
The Hi-Lo is a gem. I visited for brunch and had a great experience. Service was quick even though the restaurant was busy. The Hi-Tops are definitely the specialty of the restaurant - they are delicious and creative combinations of foods. The cold brew coffee was also amazing.
Jerica Massey
The food was only beat in quality by the service we received from Allie. Absolutely recommend making a stop here if you are even just passing through.
Lauren Parrett
This was a nice little diner. The coffee was really good. It comes from a local place. The server was very nice and attentive. The food was delicious. I had the potato chip frittata with the top the tater sour cream on the side. I added bacon to mine because it comes meatless (and that made it a tad bit pricey). My friend ordered the Huevos Rancheros. The presentation of both meals was great, and the food was well cooked. I'd definitely go back. I would have given 5 stars but the floors and corners of the diner could use a deep cleaning.
Athelgra Williams
Great service and food. One of the hidden gems of Minneapolis.
Jared
The breakfast hash was recommended by the server and I tell you, best hash I've had! The hollandaise was to die for! The coffee, made in house, was also very good. Light/medium roast! Friendly atmosphere, a little loud, but so much fun and great food! 10/10 would go here again!
eric scott
Great dinner experience with diverse menu
Del O'Loughlin
My wife surprised me and took me to breakfast here. I loved the Gary Cooper Hi Top! I have had other fried chicken breakfast dishes before, but none as perfectly balanced between savory and sweet like this, and it was super filling. My wife had the Lox & Dam Benedict, and it was really great as well. I look forward to going back again soon!
Kevin Kuerbs
This place was awesome. Went on a weekday night to avoid the crowds. I have read through the reviews, and most people don't seem very much the "diner" style crowd. Diners of this vintage were never designed to be intimate, they were designed to eat and go. So if a quiet meal in a boring atmosphere is your thing, go somewhere else. Hi-Lo is fun,hip and a great twist on an old fashioned diner. The food was great, our server was great. Would definetly be back.
Elisa Song
We got a table in 5 minutes on a Friday at around 1pm. The servers were very friendly and polite. Food overall was pretty good. The toppings were delicious but the donut they used was dry and technically just donut bread.. No icing or glaze. The "donuts" added no flavour at all the everything else and thus bland out the dish a little.
RIB MAC AND GRILLED CHEESE on a donut was delicious (just the toppings). The rib was slightly chewy but the mac and cheese and the grilled cheese were good.
FRIED CHICKEN FINGERS AND GRAVY on a donut was the best dish. The syrup helped with the blandness and the dryness of the donut. Would definitely recommend this one.
PULLED PORK WITH BEAN AND CORN SALSA AND EGG on a donut was really dry and had no flavour. The pulled pork had hardly any sauce and the corn salsa didn't really go with the dish. The egg worked out nicely but I found myself reaching for any kind of sauce or my drink to moisten my mouth. Overall a dry and kind of lacked in flavour.
The concept of their menu is amazing and looking at the other reviews (and listening to my brother's past experience) I think it might have just been an off day for them. It's unfortunate though that we were only visiting and won't be able to give them another try. The staff were very friendly though and the STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKE and BLOODY MARY were good though, so that makes up for the food a little.
Tanya Artz
I didn't know what to expect here, but we needed a spot to have lunch on Lake Street, and chose Hi-Lo because of the reviews. Great atmosphere and very interesting food choices ranging from standard bar fare to the unique - their Hi-Top meals. Since we might not return we tried one. I had the Mac Rib and my husband tried the Curry. Both were excellent but very rich. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I might have had a little caloric remorse later in the day. Would definitely recommend though, before or after a 3 mile run!
Danny Burr
The food is delicious! I've never had a bad meal here. The Hi-tops are the star of the show, with savory and sweet wrapped up together. You can't go wrong with this place.
Tends to be really busy around weekend brunch times, but all other times of day are more moderate. Eat here!
Andy Thomson
Classic diner that makes you feel like you stopped in from a cross-country road trip even though it's just across town. The twist is that the food isn't crummy or greasy at all. The Hi Top and the rest of the menu is innovative and delicious. The drinks are as good as they come in the Twin Cities as well!
Darcie Vandegrift
Thoughtful casual food in a fascinating location. Menu included creative takes on breakfast favorites - think salmon Benedict and lavender French toast and some affordable “don’t mess with tradition” options like pancakes. Prices were $14-20 each with no alcohol (cocktails looked yummy, but not at Saturday lunch out with the teenager; tables all around had beautiful Bloody Marys). Pancakes and a couple of other items for less. Place was full but we were seated quickly. Located in an architecturally significant renovated mid-20th Century diner. Crowd included friends out together, families with babies, and all ages. A good time.
David Casas
My 1st visit. Definitely adding to the favorites. Great service, atmosphere, and food. Don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the experience. Had the salmon eggs Benedict, a piece of French toast, and the gin slushy. Home rum.
Cole Cameron
Honestly probably the best diner I've ever visited. Upbeat retro vibe with artery-clogging manna that'll flood your gut with endorphins for hours. About $20 per person with a generous tip, which I hope you'll be leaving considering the service.
Jason Grady
There, in house hand made donut concoction, made with hand breaded chicken, smothered in sausage gravy, is absolutely to die for it's amazing!!
Greg Kondrasuk
First time visit today for breakfast. We had their two of their Hi-Tops and a side order of hash browns. The coffee and hash browns were good both but not great, but we both really enjoyed our Hi-Tops--one Quack of Dawn and one Minneapolis Bliss. I was afraid the Bliss would be terribly sweet, but it wasn't. Just right. Service was also excellent.
Perla Razo
Was a great place to stop and eat with my pals after a day of exploring the cities (st.paul and Minneapolis). We all felt satisfied with our meals(three of us got the the same meal and the other two got a different meal)! The couple of us that got their rootbeer felt it was one of the best tasting rootbeer we've ever had. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable and made you feel like you where in an old cozy diner. The workers where also nice and quick with our meals. They also had an option of teas just in case you wanted a nice warm beverage to warm your soul. The diner was also nice and clean and well kept. They also have an indoor and an outdoor area so if eating outside with the breeze if more of your deal you'll like it here!
Marc Radinzel
Hi Lo does a great job keeping food approachable but delicious. Think delicious comfort food with fresh ingredients and a full bar. Everything I've had here has been wonderful. This place can get very busy especially weekend brunch times. Worth the wait.
Cali Newby
Hi-Lo is one of my favorite go-to’s in the Minneapolis area. Love the atmosphere and the food is amazing! I usually switch it up but a safe go-to for me is the crispy chicken sandwich. Had lunch there today and noticed that the breading on the chicken has changed, to be honest I’ve gotta say it bummed me out! Loved the flavor of the sandwich before, this herbal breading just throws me off and doesn’t tie the whole sandwich together very well. Regardless, I love Hi-Lo and will be back :)
Anika Grejtak
Creative and unique menu with a home-cooked feel. I love the environment and staff; always friendly and welcoming. They also offer specials to night nurses. I went in at 8am once in scrubs and was offered drink specials because of it! Very cool hangout to either grab a drink or a bite to eat, or both!
Dustin Hoffmeister
Known for their hi-tops, which is basically a giant donut with a variety of sweet and savory topping combos. The rest of the menu features brunch, burgers and some entrees. Everything we've had has been delicious, and the patio is also great!
Tiffany Tandberg
Food was ok. The wings were overcooked and dry. My burger was delicious! Service was slower than usual but that was fine with us, we weren't in a hurry.
Heidi Nelson
Unusual AND great tasting food.... got to try ones of their Hi-lo's, or the Mediterranean salad. They have a gin and tonic with cucumber, ginger and "flowers" we ALL love. They rotate in craft beers from local breweries too
Inside it's a cute retro dinner all new and shiny, but we love the patio with umbrellas.
I don't live close but we make the trip to impress out of town visitors and for celebrating special events. Everyone who has gone has raved about it!
Andrew Koch
Favorite late-night old school experience. You feel like you should be ordering a classic hamburger and a milkshake. But the menu is SO much more than that. I'm talking about sandwiches with a homemade donut as the base. (Read: Hell yes.) Breakfast all day (the Egg Sandwich is amazing) and a la carte options like pancakes and hash browns. It's a small place, but that's why it's so charming and fun (and there's a fire pit on the patio). ...Highly recommended. And let's be honest, there's a high chance you'll see me here.
Jessica Connors
Amazing!!!! Always interesting finds on the menu and food is always prepared and served with carte. Presentation and taste are great! I have not had anything I would not eat again, a hole in the wall, local diner with bursting flavor and nice assortment of options. Staff are always friendly and very attentive. I would rate a 10 star but that's not an option. Highly recommend. It does get very busy bit eith the wait, you wrong regret it.
Stephen Smith
Upscale diner food. Great service and very little plastic in to-go orders :)
yōkai
clean place food is good just service is little slow
Donald Ohman
Solid diner atmosphere, decent fries, and appropriate music selections. The burger was great. My partner ordered a salad that was missing three of the listed ingredients and the server was a little defensive, didn't seem to care a whole lot. She was also clearly treating other customers similarly. Not fun to see. I feel like this place is "meh," no one really seemed to care about details or really good service except perhaps the person who made my burger. Kudos to the cook! Wouldn't go again.
George Daniel
Here’s what you need to know. Hi-Lo is in an old diner car, one that’s actually kept up pretty well, that delivers a timeless yet authentic diner atmosphere. The food is ridiculous. I had one of the Hi-Tops with an egg added on top. The foundation was a donut without the hole. On top were several incredibly well-seasoned and -fried chicken tenders, a subtle maple syrup, a hearty-not-heavy gravy, and a perfectly sunnied egg. The coffee was hot and strong. The waitstaff was polite and helpful. We were sat immediately. Priced very affordably. I’m going to go ahead and say something bold: best diner in Minneapolis.
Sheena Curry
Hi-Lo is just lovely. It is a very small, so there is almost always a (well worth it) wait. Without fail, I get the breakfast sandwich with sausage, on a biscuit. It is delightful. They also have these boozy ice cream drinks which are incredibly tasty. The menu hosts traditional offerings with a twist, such as the potato chip omelet. A must-try if you are in the area!
Dave Valen
Good food, fast friendly service. Very noisy.
John Sanford
Amazing place with an interesting menu and exciting cocktail menu also. Very family friendly and busy on a Friday night . Outdoor patio and indoor counter, booths were all filled. Service was prompt and staff erer very helpful and knowledgeable . I had fish and chips very tasty !
Kezia Germ
The perfect brunch spot! I greatly enjoyed the Hi-Tops, which I would lovingly describe as ambiguous pastries. So delicious, great service, and fun diner atmosphere. Plus they had parking! Score!
Beth Bergmans
Had the Gary Cooper breakfast. Crispy fried chicken on a home made donut. Yum. And great Peace coffee to boot.
Yen Dang
A very sophisticated yet humble diner. Everything is so good and made fresh. Big portions so it's a bang for your buck. Lots of vegetarian options as well. I believe someone like Elvis would eat here. Its that type of food. Dont hesitate to come here to eat some warm pancakes as well as make use of the liquor license. ^_^
J EB
This is definitely worth a visit! They have a good variety on the menu and I spend much time contemplating what I want. But... I always get the Hash - probably the most popular dish for a reason. The staff have always been great and the coffee is perfect.
randy huff
So much fun especially for a date night.
Food was great and the mint oreo malts were perfection.
Staff made us feel welcome during the entire time we were there.
Adele ate here and she was not wrong in liking this place.
Rick Jefferson
I had the breakfast sandwich on a biscuit. It was one of the best biscuits I've ever had. I could've just eaten it alone and would've been totally satisfied. Highly recommend!
Sarah Schuler
This place has such interesting food combinations! I love the Hi tops, a doughnut base with an interesting topping. I got the Minneapple Bliss. It was a doughnut covered in apples, caramel, pecans, and topped with whipped cream! It was a little too sweet for me for breakfast, but it was still so delicious! Others in my group got the Notorious P.I.G. with pulled pork, egg, and salsa. It looked fantastic. Great atmosphere and service was good! I will be coming back to try some of their other menu items soon!
Sarah Nelson
Super retro atmosphere with amazing and creative food! You can do the typical diner food or amazing concoctions! Drinks are also real dang good. They have really nice outdoor seating for summer months too!
John Duke
We had a nice meal on the wood deck with upscale diner food. Service was great and staff was very friendly. A decent selection of craft beers. Be sure to read the history of the diner on the menu!
Kathy Vaughan
Got 4 breakfasts and a salad between 4 of us. Wow! So great to have a new place offering really delicious food. Service was terrific (fun server), menu straight forward, Bloody Mary a new contender. Can't wait to try lunch.
Keith Ford
Attractive new diner style restaurant
This new restaurant is a renovated "diner car" style eatery and is attracting crowds. Still, you can get in on lunch hour with only a small wait. It's very attractive with lots of gleaming chrome. There's outdoor seating in back.
The menu is a cut above a diner menu (plus there's cocktails, wine and beer) I have only eaten there once (but we're going back). My crispy chicken was a dry chicken breast but a very good brioche style bun and a very good cole slaw topping was excellent, but I wouldn't bother with it again. Another really liked the flavor of her plain hamburger; another enjoyed his scrambled eggs. The hit at the table though was the Hash Stuffed Hash - hash browned potatoes with peppers, sliced corned beef and caramelized onions, 2 eggs and hollandaise sauce. It looked and was terrific , according to the lucky man that ordered it. Two who had the coffee thought it was terrific (Peace Coffee, Twin Cities blend).
The price was reasonable and the service excellent. Small parking lot with lots more on street parking.
Kameron Boike
Some of the best food around

I had the Tex Mex burrito. If you love spicy food in the morning this is perfect for you. I live the aluminum decor around the place too, it really gives it a nice 50s look. I don't know if this is just a norm for diners of if it's because it's near a seedy part of town, but they sell alcohol here. I can't help but wonder if it's to attract poorer people. But I'm not complaining, my food was good, and so was the coffee.

Love this place!! Have been here several times and have always been pleased with the food and service. I'll start with the hi-tops. Where can you go wrong with food served on top of a pillowy donut-fry bread hybrid?! It adds a perfectly sweet but not too sweet accent to all of the hi-top varieties. I've tried the Gary Cooper (fried chicken and gravy - this is what Adele had when she was here), the Minneapple Bliss (basically apple pie) and one of their weekly specials which was a S'mores hi-top. The sweeter ones are definitely best as a dessert but the savory flavors make a decadent, filling main course.
They have new specials every week and they're always very creative and fun! They also have great, thin pancakes and several syrups that are delicious. And their pie is excellent, the lemon meringue especially. If it is during peak meal times they're probably busy, but it isn't usually too long a wait and it is WELL WORTH IT! The size of the restaurant doesn't lend itself well to large groups, but in the summer you can sit out on their patio which may be more accomodating. Hi-Lo is super unique and we always try to take visitors here.

The food was delicious and of higher quality than a typical diner. Staff was very friendly and attentive. They also serve alcohol. I can personally recommend the Gary Coop'er, Notorious P.I.G., and the Tex Mex. They have table seating both indoors and outdoors as well as seating at the counter.

Generous portions and great food. Great service in a historic diner

Disgustingly delicious. Lived in Minneapolis for a few years and refused to go to HiLo because I knew I’d love it. Went on my last week there and was happy to see I made the right decision. Solid diner experience with higher quality food than I had expected.
I recommend visiting, but limit yourself on how often you come back.

Sat down, ordered food and appetizers. Food came way before the appetizer. We ordered two orders of cheese curds and only got one. My Hi-Lo burger came without their special sauce (which makes all the difference), by the time I realized this we’d finished most of it. Not once were we asked if everything was okay (even though others were asked) nor did we get water refills till we requested (while other tables did). In the beginning we thought maybe cause it’s a bit busy but even when it slowed down. The food is good that’s why I’m giving it a 3 stars but the service (including messing up orders) was unforetunaatly bad.

Surprisingly good little diner, prices are a bit high but they have great vegetarian options and treats. Worth checking out

Great food and service. Unique venue

Food took forever and then somehow beans were in short supply so our last meal came about 10 minutes after the rest of the food. Service was good but the kitchen was slipping, we'll give them another chance since they comped the late food. And it was pretty tasty once we got it.

I had the Notorious PIG and it was the best pulled pork I had in a while. I was hesitant about the donut part but it worked great. Everything everyone else got looked delicious, I would highly recommend this place for it's food. The service was a slow but the food made up for it.

The wait time was pretty long, but there was plenty of space and seating for the wait. The menu was fun and a little novel. The employees had a lot of positive energy and seemed to like their jobs. The food was delicious, and I would definitely recommend.

Hi-Lo Diner gives off all the classic vibes! Food was delicious!
The Buffalo cheese curbs have a good kick to them so be beware if you don’t like spice.
The chicken sandwich was off the wall!

; Cool little hip joint with good food. I'd say my favorite thing to eat there is the buffalo cheese curds. Has a little kick of spice. They have interesting food combo. I've order the Mac & Cheese Rib; not what I expect when it came out, but interesting. It was mac & cheese and ribs on top of a donut. There's off-street parking and a parking lot.

Wonderful place and will go back! Waiter was super friendly and recommended the Gary Cooper to my date! I tried a bite and it was terrific. The lemon meringue pie was super awesome with cream and egg whites! Coming back for breakfast!

Fun spot for all day breakfast, modern twisted diner dinners, and a very good cocktail. If you wanna spice things up a bit try the boozy ice cream. My wife couldn't get enough of those. It really is an old diner, so head in for some good food and enjoy the vibe.
Rosanna Hudgins
Had the fish and chips, they were ok. The fries were better, the spicy seasoning was delicious. I was really disappointed with the egg cream, nowhere near the quality I had in New York, very bland. I give points for the ambiance-really cool!

This is one of those diners that has two different atmospheres to it. If you're the kind of person who enjoys the late night bar kind of experience best to go in the evening/night.
If you enjoy a quieter setting where you can talk with the people you're with, best to go in the morning/day.
Either way, this place has some pretty adequate entrees. Nothing to write home about and they lack diversity in their choices. Though they do make a nice malt.

This place is straight up vibin' man! My hubs and I stopped here on a late Saturday night for some drinks and some apps. I had the Fender Bender signature cocktail and it was amazing. Literally been craving it since we left. Such a cool atmosphere.. definitely a fun experience!
Samantha Mursan
I love Hi-Lo! The staff is great! The food is delicious and the cocktails are tasty. Is a must go for breakfast, brunch, lunch or a cocktail.

The old style dinner brings back the food and music of the mid 1900s. With their friendly staff and the great menu items they keep ya in the mood for anyting you are craving. I had the lox and dam eggs Benedict and they were great with the smoked salmon and capers. A place that has root beer on tap is good in my book.

The best service ever hands up. We had Denver omelets and hash browns. Very good. Very clean.
Christian Bakken
Great classic diner food with a twist! The Notorious P.I.G is amazing. Prices are more than reasonable for the food. Cool old 50's diner atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely a must go diner if your in the area.

Really good diner and restaurant. Excellent atmosphere. Great service. Broad accessible menu - good options for all food types. Have gone for breakfast and dinner. I will frequent this place. I'm thankful that the owners made the choices they did.

Servers sporting way too many tattoos and piercings and they dress very shoddily for a the level of restaurant they claim to be. Food is fair but the menu features no "diner" food. Also, constant loud banging while bartender crushes ice with a meat tenderizer for overpriced drinks. We couldn't talk over the noise! Better, cheaper and more diner-like food at Perkins.
Cassie Mil
Been to HiLo 3 times, where the best choices are pie, donuts, and boozy milkshakes. Burrito, hash, and breakfast sandwiches were all dry and disappointing. It is certainly loud so don’t bring anyone who is hard of hearing. Wait staff are terrific.
Jeff Grizzell
This place is phenomenal!!! Seriously, some of the best brunch and cocktails that I've had in a long time. Everyone who works here is super friendly too. The fried chicken sandwich and corned beef hash were amazing.
Sue Falldin
It was such a lovely day we had lunch out on the deck. 3 of us ordered something different, all were good choices. I had the fried chicken sandwich, really good. The waitress was very friendly.
Christina Newby Fiebich
Have to enjoy one of their signature "donut" desserts! Their spicy cheese curds are a big hit, too. Tip: Order them with a side of sour cream for the kids so it's not too hot and still allows you to enjoy the flavor.
Rachael Rinehart
New-age diner with retro charm. Check out their selection of signature Hi-Tops: a glazed donut-like base topped with sweet or savory items like ribs, mac and cheese, coleslaw, apples, fried chicken, and much more! Menu rotates seasonally so come back often to try new concoctions. Also, GET A COCKTAIL! The best and most creative selection around!
Rip Pie
The service and food is good.
The space is cute and quaint, we sat inside but the outdoor seating is nice.
Parking isn’t terrible if you manage to find a spot in the lot attached to it. Otherwise there’s street parking.
It was a great spot to take an out-of-town guest to.

Oh, this is epic. Diner food tranformed. Your mouth will never be the same. And your pocket book won't feel too much different!
I almost don't want to review this place because then you'll start coming here and make it famous and expensive. I will have to wait outside for 20 minutes to get one of the hi-tops in my mouth.
Oh the hi-top how do i love thee...
A sinfully delicious thing, where an entree hooked up with a dessert, and the product of their conjugal visit in the kitchen is something worth writing home about. Honestly, this place should sell postcards.
If you are looking for regular US diner grub, however, this is not your place. Still, you will get good classic formica and chrome atmosphere, but not all the trappings of the schlocky greaser 1950s. Instead, it's fun, bright, and just effing delicious. Have a cocktail or craft brew while you wait.
Infinite Rebel
The food was excellent along with the atmosphere, and it was like a blast from the past with a twist of today's food market. So good. I can never say if its 5 stars because I've never been to a five star restaurant, can't lie. 😂 we called the bartender a soda jerk cause he prepared for us a chocolate soda. 😊 its the technical term! But the food. The ones with the doughnuts. So good. Fully recommend going here and I can't wait to come back! 😊 I went over a week ago and I don't remember the names of the items. Sorry guys. You just gotta go. 😂

Wonderful old fashioned diner makes you feel you've gone back in time. We went for breakfast and their Hi-Tops are some of the best breakfast items around. Very sweet, more like dessert but delicious. French Toast is great too.
Patrick Keifert
Very friendly, competent, and efficient wait staff serve great comfort food with the Diner's own take. Loved the meat loaf with cherries. Greeted by a great guy who made us feel very welcome.
Alison
Nothing fantastic to write home about on the food. For the price I would rather head down a few blocks to BDP. It's fine but I would not be willing to wait more than 20 minutes for a table to eat here.
The drinks, however, are fantastic. The 21A is really great and so is the Santa Ana Winds.
I will definitely be back for cocktails, not so much for the food.
Drinks - 4 stars
Food - 2 stars

Staff is great, food is great, prices are on or with most hipster-type diners around the TC 🤷🏻♀️ their French toast is bomb. Great beer list. Good happy hr. No complaints. …
Nathan Genetzky
Good: Great food. Awesome drinks. Friendly staff. Bad: A bit overpriced on the drinks for the size they are. Suggest: They should add a mimosa pitcher to their menu.
Baramee Chindavong
Cute and cozy little diner. Great service. Good cocktails. Boozy milkshakes. Good food. Definitely try a Hi-Top...fried dough with stuff on top (not just sweet, but plenty of savory.
Elissa Schufman
Great food, but definitely under-staffed for how busy it was (Sunday brunch). Servers were polite and did a great job despite being swamped! Our group had the chicken sandwich (bomb!), one of the crazy donut-thingys (also bomb), and the smoked salmon benedict (like the only breakfast thing sans potatoes). We did have beverage we ordered not arrive, but we weren't charged either.
JT Pinther
I had the Lox and Dam Benedict, and it was So Good. I was very impressed. I don’t think I would have changed a single thing about my meal. The coffee was strong in the best way possible. I saw multiple things on the menu I would enjoy stuffing my face with. But it will be really hard to stray from that lox Benedict. 🤗 …
