Reviews of Gardens of Salonica
Yum best Greek food we’ve ever had. My husband and I are both vegetarian and they had many options for us. We tried the fava, yigandes, ambelomades, and two dessert. Everything was fresh, flavorful and excellent. Truly the best and most authentic greek food out there. Thank you!
Gardens of Salonica has a pretty large menu compared to most Mediterranean restaurants I've been to. The lunch menu had a decent array but I'd like to go back for their dinner, which I assume has more entrees to choose from. It was hard for us to decide what to order, everything was great though.
Simon was amazing waiting on my mother and I, had the lamb gyro w/fries with wine, was a lot of food! I also had espresso drink where he told me my fortune based on how the coffee grounds fell onto my plate, and he was spot on!! We ended with a desert, ice cream scoops and boughatsa’s(Al-a-mode style!)and they were both very rich and tasted beautiful, Anna the owner was there and schooled us on what Ouzo was(Oots-oh)lol she seems very nice too! Highly recommend this place, feel like I should have paid more! Bravo Gardens of Salonica! BRAVO!
Simply breathtaking with the character of the outside of the building is just the beginning. The food is simply to die for. Also the wait staff is phenomenal when it comes to paring their wine with the food that they have on the menu. Simply top notch!
Wonderful place to have REAL Greek food. Great staff! Great food and drinks. Authentic Greek.
We attended the traveling wine dinner #8 at the restaurant last night. Anna & her team put a lot of love into the menu and wine selections. Loved that she sourced everything possible locally and the salmon from Lake Superior baked in seaweed was AMAZING! I'm looking forward to attending again in September. Lovely crowd, lovely crew, lovely restaurant. Thanks to all of the servers and the sommelier for making this worth every penny!
From the lamb, to the mushrooms, this food is worthy of Zeus, Apollo, Hera, Athena and the rest of the immortal gods.
Seriously though I highly recommend this restaurant, I have eaten here several times and it is one of the things I look for to when I travel to Minnesota. The Lemonade is a must try as well.
Let's be real: We all hate the new "Dining Out After COVID" experience. Attendance & ambience are sad, menus are limited, ingredients & freshness aren't always as reliable as before due to unknown inventory needs...
But I walked out of Salonica happy this evening.
It was our first time there (ever) & there was NONE of the typical COVID-disappointment. Everything on the menu was available (even additional Specials!), and both the wine & food were delicious.
I'm Greek -- and I have a personal mission to order Pastitsio at every new Greek restaurant I visit, just for comparison. The bar is set by the Pastitsio - and Salonica's was one the best I've had. No lie.
Best Greek restaurant I've ever been to. The soup was delicious and they have these turnover things that are stuffed with spinach and feta that are to die for. Anna, the owner, buys high quality food, and understands the importance of grass fed and organic food.
My new favorite Greek restaurant. Every time we come we find a new favorite and Anna invites us to try something new. Today she brought us stuffed squash blossoms which were divine and full of flavor!
Amazing food! We had Anna cater our daughter’s 1st birthday party and everyone was raving about the food and wanted to know where to get it! Would highly recommend for your next party, authentic and delicious!
We we're excited and enticed by the reviews and claims of authenticity. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and professional. The cold octopus appetizer was great! I also ordered Saganaki but it was flavorless and slightly burnt. Worse though was the owner who served it and when I said "opa" upon the lighting, proceeded to shame and scold me stating "real Greeks don't do that" and only "Chicago Greeks do". Perhaps she needs to learn the concept of φιλοξενία (hospitality) that "real" Greeks are usually famous for.
Food always excellent. Very quiet, and has a rustic atmosphere.
Got takeout here recently and would highly recommend it! We got the turkey gyro, feta dip, pita, & lamb shanks, which were all delicious. For dessert we had baklava and the chocolate brownie one - YUM. It was all great. We will definitely be back soon!
I adore this place. Excellent wine choices from organic , sustainable vineyards. Excellently sourced food cooked to perfection. Lovely interior. Unpretentious. Homemade ice cherry ice cream from owner's backyard cherries.
Food is the best most authentic Greek food anywhere. Staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. Dining in is only on Friday and Saturday nights for now. Take-out is available all the time.
Good food, atmosphere was pretty plain.
Wonderful experience! It was my first time there. First I was very impressed by the wait staff and how attentive and personable they were. I had the Greek wine and went off the servers suggestion. It was the best wine I've had and just how he described it. Then the food was incredible. Different from anywhere else and truly delicious.
I think this is the second review I've written in my life. I felt the total experience was just that GOOD!
Gardens of Salonica has always been my favorite Greek restaurant. And, it still is. Such a great place to go for a relaxed and exquisitely delicious dinner with people you enjoy. Their take-out menu during these covid times is fabulous!
My favorites are skordalia, all of the vegetarian dishes, anything with lamb, including to-die-for lamb ribs that they are serving right now, the desserts. And, of course, anything the owner Anna recommends is also my favorite.
Called for a pick up order and the woman who answered was quite rude. She didn’t care that my sandwich was previously packed badly and was not accommodating to a simple request to care. Wild, considering it is a $15 sandwich. Food is delicious but I don’t care for the attitude.
I gave this place the benefit of the doubt after reading the bad reviews below. The place was not bad, but not great. I found it rather odd that no one entered the restaurant for dinner on a Thursday night. My friend and I were the only table in the entire restaurant for two hours between 5-7pm.
Anyway, let me review the food. The haloumi was excellent, a perfect appetizer. As for the entrees, the mousakas was flavorful. The only issue I had with it was that it was cold in the middle after waiting 45 minutes. Thinking about it, it was most likely made ahead of time and then refrigerated. We also got their pork and plum special, that was disappointing. There were more plums on the plate than pork, and for $24 that’s a shame. The flavor was fine but again, it was $24 for plums and rice. Also, if you dine here you should expect slower service. So I’m giving this restaurant 3 out of 5 stars.
Just had lunch from Gardens of Salonica and feel like I just had a tiny vacation!
The food was fresh, reasonably portioned, and TASTY! The flavors were spot on and filled me with the nostalgia for trips long ago.
I have already have plans to be back, thank you!
Stopped by recently and had wonderful service here. We were able to try the beers and the teas that were new to us and enjoy those as well as delicious food. I suggest giving this location a stop because the art inside is beautiful and the location is in a great area along with the delicious food options and new things to try.
This was a great little place! My boyfriend and I went here during date night and the food was pretty good. Nothing absolutely blew me out of the water, but it was tasty. The service from staff could be a bit better. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and our waiter was going dead slow. If you want food quickly, this might not be the place for you. Other than that, I’d try it again if I was in the area.
Our company gets lunch catering from here every couple months or so. The food is delicious. It usually comes with ingredients to build your own gyro/salad stuff. Dining in for lunch or Dinner is also a great time. The servers are very accommodating and polite.
Had my daughters Rehearsal Dinner here a few weeks ago.....
The food and staff are amazing...we had a group of 40 people and they provided us with such Great Service. The appetizers and servings for our meals was the BEST Greek food I have experienced. The feelings were felt by many in our group
This is a delightful Greek place, with lots of options. The lamb is great, the gyro is very good, as are the many appetizersthe saganaki is the best. There are vegetarian options too. The wine is cheap but tastes okay (try the mavrodaphne). The dining rooms have lots of sunlight, which is uncommon in Minnesota.
Sadly, there are some issues. I have dined there many times. The service is always slow. The staff work hard, but the owners are too frugal to hire the correct number of waiters. They also have blended the waiter role with the bus-boy role, which unhelpfully makes it hard to know whom to ask for what. Making a reservation usually requires sending an email or making a call the night before, instead of using an app or a website.
Nonetheless, these flaws are minor, so I give 4 stars.
One of my favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities! They have wondrous and plenty options for vegans! Everything tastes fresh and flavorful, and textures are always great too. Pita with spreads, Greek fries with red wine vinegar (oh my god!), eggplant, bean and olive dishes I can't pronounce the name of, always in the most fantastic sauces or seasoning. The atmosphere has lots of natural light, plants, pretty tables and chairs. Seating is quite adequate and easy to talk with whoever you're with. Music sets the mood but isn't too loud. Usually cheap street parking in front or nearby. It is easy to spend too much money here! But everything is worth the money. The dishes always leave me feeling healthy and full but not heavy.
Wonderful resteraunt with great service. The dishes are varied and we'll thought-out. As well as some of the predictable gyro sandwiches and familiar pan-northeast Mediterranean items, there are some less typical, and often more subtle, Greek dishes. A great place for lunch or date night.
Amazing takeout! Called and ordered to-go and everything was incredible! Hands down best Spanakopita (feta pie) in Minnesota! The gyros, dips and dessert were all fantastic. Will definitely be ordering again soon.
Absolutely incredible food and service, can't wait to return to try the rest of the menu. Ask about the specials and don't be afraid to ask questions as the staff if happy to inform you about the authenticity of the menu! There is free parking after hours and on Saturday in the Wells Fargo lot, metered parking available anytime.
This is the best Greek restaurant in Minneapolis. Really authentic Mediterranean. Everything from the food, to the wine, to the pace. Perfect place to come for a relaxed meal.
This is also the only restaurant I’ve seen with a diverse selection of Greek wines.
Great place for Greek cuisine. I love the pita variety platter and gyros sandwiches but they have a lot of choices beyond that. Good selection of beverages too. Been going there for many years.
So excited that I found them on Door Dash. Talama!!!!!! I have only seen it in one other Greek restaurant and theirs is delicious. I have very high standards after working for a highly acclaimed fine dining Greek Seafood Restaurant in Atlanta, and this is pretty damn close. Can't wait to try EVERYTHING.
I haven’t actually eaten at Gardens of Salonica, but they catered an event I was at and the food was DIVINE. Lots of delicious vegetarian options! One of the desserts — a pastry with chocolate and hazelnuts — was honestly one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten. So flaky, not overly sweet, and just decadent.
The best Greek restaurant in the Twin Cities. I've been to It's Greek to Me, Christos, etc. But Gardens surpasses them all. The reason is twofold. First of all Anna (the owner) is a true food artist and doesn't just serve up the usual Greek standards (although you can get those too) but has magnificent specials (off menu) that show her creative side. For example, if you ever get a chance to try the leg of lamb served in lemon-egg sauce and nettles, do it! It's phenomenal. The other reason this place is so great is that Anna uses only the highest quality ingredients. She doesn't cut any corners, and tries to by local when she can. Also there are plenty of vegetarian options for those interested.
I've been going to this restaurant for over 15 years and my friend since it opened. The atmosphere is less formal so if you are looking for white table cloth don't waste your time. The food is always fabulous except for one time I asked about the skordalia, it just didn't seem the same. BTW.....this was about a year ago....Well, the owner had not made it for that day. They brought out a new batch, which they usually like to let sit to gather flavor, and presto....the same fabulous dish. So, I'd rather none of you go and ruin this wonderful place by showing up and making it too busy since I frequent it very often. However, if you enjoy great food, a bit eclectic eating arrangements, and wonderful engaging people this is a solid place to try out. All those St. Paul/Mpls magazine rewards they have displayed were given for a reason.
I love it every time I go.....almost weekly. Please don't tell anyone about it if you like it.
Delicious food. The salads are excellent. Fresh and refreshing. Be prepared to request service. It is good. You need to advocate for yourself. I think it is a bit too eropean for Minnesota. Still go if you have no place to be within a hour and a half.
Amazing food! I ate here with a friend and we shared two appetizers and each had an entree. I asked about the desserts and the waiter gave me one to-go on the house. The service was friendly, helpful, and prompt. Wish I lived in the Twin Cities so I could eat here more often.
Good food, plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered a vegetarian combo plate with skordalia (so good!), something I've forgotten three weeks later, and cooked greens - IDK if it was an error or intentional, but the cooked greens seemed to be straight out of the cooler. They had definitely not been heated before they were served. I was too busy chatting it up to inquire about it.
The food at Gardens of Salonica was excellent! Everything from the warm pita bread starter to the baklava sundae was delicious. My husband had the gyros (loved it and the fries) and I had the yigandes (giant lima beans) and I would never have thought that a plate of beans could taste SO good. The service was quick. We had no trouble getting seated and were served within minutes of arriving. We will be back and we'll come hungry. We definitely recommend it!
Amazing food. I crave the octopodi and tyro appetizers, served with their unique and delicious take on pita bread. It's a beautiful space too. Nice for a date, but not a formal setting. Sometimes service can take a while - just don't go if you are in a rush.
Exquisitely prepared dishes and reasonably priced! Come any day and you find the regular specialties as well as items prepared just for that day. Last night I had the the lamb gyro (one of the day's specialties -- seasoned lamb chunks with a mustard sauce, onions, tomatoes) with a wild mushroom saganaki for appetizer, and lemon filled bougasta for dessert. This was a memorable meal, indeed, and what we have come to expect from Gardens. It's also why we've been coming back for 20+ years!
The food is exemplary, every aspect of it is consistently on point and though the price reflects that, it is by no means overpriced. Service is commendable and the specials should definitely be considered. The environment is a bit strange and the aesthetics seem a little awkward, still, it manages to be comfortable and even charming in its own unique way.
Excellent restaurant. Everything tastes ultra-fresh. We sampled (and loved) several appetizers: fava beans, a sort of hummus with a much lighter taste, the beets, and eggplant. Also tried the spinach pie -- the best I've ever had-- as the spinach was fresh, full and zesty. Most spinach pies I've had are compressed, the phyllo dough and spinach flattened.
Food was good, and portions were ok. The manager(?) made the rounds to greet diners, which was nice and also was on hand to personally serve a local vip unknown to me. The experience was very nice. Would give 4* if not for prices, which felt a bit steep. Wish i could give 3.5* which i believe is the more appropriate score.
Outstanding food and Outstanding service!! We will be back!!!
AUTHENTIC Greek Food!
Visiting the Gardens of Salonica for the first time took us right back to an authentic Greek setting. Simon, our server was exceptional. He not only knew every item on the menu but made personal suggestions for someone like me with some minor dietary needs. Make no doubt about it; everything is authentic from ever item on the menu to the traditional rustic Greek décor. You can visit Greece without leaving Minneapolis!
Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. Cute atmosphere. Great service. Food is amazing. I like the appetizer sampler thing. Really good Greek wives
My wife and I drive in to Gardens of Salonica about once a month some times twice a month. "It's about 25 miles". We do this because we really enjoy their roasted beets and a great Greek salad.
However last night I was a little disappointed, I had one little crumb of feta on my salad and one Kalamata olive plus the size of the salad was very small. I also had a gyro sandwich that I typically get, however this time it was the size of a hotdog. Very small, Very disappointed . It seems as thou the portion size has dropped dramatically. Its to bad the prices have not. I think it's time to find a new Greek restaurant?
The food is heavenly and as a vegetarian I couldn't be happier with the choices on hand. The prices are a tad high but I guess you get what you pay for. The staff are little perfunctory in their manner but were otherwise efficient. Would return for the food despite the lukewarm service.
Wow! Family and I ate there last night. Really great food (I had Skordalia and fish, we all shared an appetizer plate ...). Service was great. Prices reasonable. I can’t wait to go back.
A truly authentic Greek restaurant with a fair amount of variety including many vegan and vegetarian options. The weekend specials are consistently incredible. My favorite dish is the Mousakas!
Nice clean place, our waiter was very kind and considerate of our dietary restrictions. Lots of vegan options! The food is a bit pricy, but everything was very good.
This has been my favorite Greek restaurant for 25 years. Their homemade food is just as good, if not even better, than it was when the first opened. Skordalia, Tyro, leek lemon soup, I could go on and on... go there. Try everything!
We were here for a grooms dinner. Staff and food were amazing. I didn't know quail was so good! Also I recommend the Greek beer Mythos. It is quite good. A pilsner or a lager I believe.
Their appetizers of tyro, skordalia, and anginares are a great choise to start off meal with that comes with freashly made pitas. I feel bad that i never have tried any of the other entrees but their gyros are the best. Perfect combination of meat, fresh veggies, and tzatziki.
This is a close to Greece as you will get....unless you are in Santorini. The restaurant is charming, the food is delicious. It has a traditional Greek feel family feel, carrying all the Greek staples. The dolmades and lemon sauce are superb!
I LOVED! their food, great service too. Only thing is that it took us some time to get our food or water to the table. Still highly recommended if you like greek/Mediterranean food.
Vegan and vegetarian friendly. Good classic Greek dishes from an appropriately sized menu. Skip on dessert here, there are better options in the neighborhood.
The BEST Greek Resteraunt! Everything on the menu is outstanding as well as the owners and staff.
Have been going there since I was little and love the freshness and colorfulness of the foods there! Such an authentic atmosphere, as well. It's the best greek restaurant I know of!
I had the regular gyros and they were pretty good. Small restaurant with laid back atmosphere was great for us to visit with friends.
The boss saved my life with her strong sense of intuition and empathy. She also knows a lot about wine pairings and how to build community through gastronomy.
We had a large group and the waitstaff worked together to serve us together and were very attentive. The food, as always, was fabulous!
Blown away by how good the food was. Authentic and nutritious with lots of vegan options. Try the steamed lemonade!
Over the past 25 years, our family has catered a 90th birthday party as well as a post-funeral luncheon from here. Excellent food and service all around.
Service was good, food was good, atmosphere was just ok. The lamb riblets were very tender and tasty. But it did not feel very Greek at all.
Traditional Greek food in the heart of Scandinavia Minneapolis. The lamb shank is really good. Has a cinnamon flavor
This is our favorite Greek restaurant in the Twin Cities. While the Gyros are delicious, what you really must try are the specials of the day - each one is a masterpiece!
Lamb was tender and flavorful. Best piece of lamb I've ever had.
Service was fast, polite, and willing to accommodate in any way. Go. Go now.
A tasteful atmosphere with a phenomenal menu. A must visit when I am in town. Fantastic wine pairings as well!
We always love the food. We had a chance to sample a new dessert today that had a wonderful cherry compote on top. Yum!
This has been a particular favorite place of mine for years. A small quaint dining experience with an artistic atmosphere. The dishes are light and satisfies the pallette.
The food was pretty good overall. The service was horrendous though-very slow, which completely took away from the experience as they were not busy at all.
Second time we have been but not as good as the first. The gyro meat was dried out and the chicken in the souvlaki was chewy
Organic, delicious and original Greek recipes by chef Anna. Family friendly despite longer wait times on occasion.
Wonderful food and service!
Food was great. Service very poor.
Waited 30 minutes to order drinks and food
No refills
Appetizer forgotten
Waited 30 minutes for the check
No apology for slow service
Food was great though
Super delicious food is well worth the slow service + this place is full of sculpture. Much better ambiance in the bar section, beer + wine only
Great food and really nice inside. Fries are absolutely phenomenal
Food is great. Staff pleasant if a little overworked. Gyro's were fantastic as well as the saganaki.
Love some of their dishes. Would definitely recommend their gyro and moussaka!
Gyro heads will freak. Okay it's not THAT good but I wanted to say it. Really though it's reasonably priced and the food is guuuuud.
The wine list is unusual and delicious and the food is hands down the best Greek I've ever had!!!
The food here is excellent and quite unique, even amongst the many Mediterranean restaurants in the area.
Great food, very accommodating, follows CDC, would recommend and can't wait to go back!
Excellent food and very attentive service. They really need to move into the current century with a computerized ticketing system, though.
Wonderful food, lovely ambiance and fabulous service!! This is one of our favorite restaurants and always a treat to visit!
I've been there several times, and the food is always fabulous. Try the specials!
The food here is so delicious. I hadn't been here in years, but I will definitely be going back more often.
One of our favorite places. Always delicious! Happy to be one of the first people in during these crazy times.
Amazing authentic Greek food.... simply the best ... we LOVE it here!!!
One of our favorite Greek restaurants in Minneapolis. Love the spreads, and my favorite is the octopus.
Love this place, the absolute best Greek food in the US.
I love this spot! Delicious menu, homey charm, and always order a combination plate of appetizers.
Excellent homemade Greek food and fantastic service. Highly recommend their monthly symposiums!
Great Greek food with a fun atmosphere. We love eating here
I was working here and the owner brought out the first gyro I ever had. It was amazing!
Best gyros anywhere! Make sure you get vinegar to dip your fries 👍 …
Foods are amazing. Place is a bit small. Hard to have large group outings here
I've always had a great time here, and the food is authentic and delicious.
Good Greek food, unique and modernized while still traditional.

Food was okay, nice waitress, you have to fix your furnace! Freezing in there.
Good Mediterranean! Very authentic feta. Food was fantastic.
The service was a little slow, hence not 5 stars, but the food is really great here.
Truly amazing food, if you are a celiac you will not be disapointed.
Excellent food and service. People in the restaurant all felt like family.
