Reviews of Carmelo's Spaghetti Room
This is a local gem! Service is always friendly and the food is delicious. It is small, but that’s part of its charm. Definitely call ahead to make a reservation just to make sure you can snag a table for the night. And save room for dessert!
You must try the Caesar salad, the croutons are incredible! Their freshly made bread is also delicious. One of the best bruschettas I've had. Great service, great atmosphere and yummy food. Definitely worth trying.
My family loves Carmelo's! Kind, friendly staff, straight forward menu with a good wine selection. The bread you get with your salad is excellent! Recently remodeled (end of pandemic), the room feels cozy and authentic. The bathroom is downstairs, which can be tricky depending on how much wine you've had... :) We'll come back again and again!
Food and atmosphere were amazing. It was an intimate restaurant with authentic Italian food. We enjoyed our experience very much. The people filling our waters and clearing the tables were friendly and attentive. My only complaint was that in the hour and half we were in the restaurant, our server maybe came by twice to check on us.
Absolutely wonderful! The BEST pasta I've ever had and their alfredo sauce is divine! The atmosphere was calm and relaxing and the service was top notch. Absolutely no complaints! I will be returning very often!
This is the best little, quaint Italian restaurant! The atmosphere was wonderful, the service great, the food was awesome! We had bruschetta and the artichoke dip. Both were delicious. The balsamic was tangy. Homemade bread with salad so good! All entrees we had were wonderful. Portions good, all needed boxes for leftovers. The flourless chocolate cake and teramasu irresistible! Highly, highly recommend. Make reservations and enjoy!
This was hands down the best meal I’ve ever had. We got bruschetta to start which was delicious. Our entrees came out shortly after finishing our appetizer. We upgraded our salads and received Cesar salad. I loved that the dressing isn’t super heavy but still was very flavorful. The bread was perfection. Our pasta dishes were also very flavorful and cooked perfectly. We finished off with 3 pieces of cake. Tiramisu, coconut crème, and chocolate cake I believe. I wasn’t able to pick a favorite since they were all amazing. Thanks again!!
Have known about this place for a while and decided to have dinner there. Wow, great good, great service, and the owner/chef actually greeted people during the night. Service(Shelley) made you feel like family. Really impressed, I can see why this place is a hidden gem in the neighborhood.
This place knows how to make amazing food. It has a great little space for dine in (for a date approved) and affordable. I get the fettuccine Alfredo and chicken parm to go all the time. Always consistent and my go to for st paul pasta!
First time visit but won't be the last. Had the leek soup, bruschetta, Bolognese, ravioli and tiramisu. Awesome! Shelli and staff were great! Wonderful atmosphere and I loved sitting at the little table by the window
The food and service is always wonderful. The food is tasty. I have never had anything that wasn't worth every penny. The servings are generous.
We love Carmelo's. It's our go to place for a relaxing, romantic dinner. Carmelo's is a must go to if you love classic Italian food. Amazing!
Great food, lovely atmosphere. Service was well-timed and attentive for the most part. Artichoke dip was especially good! Will come again.
It was an interesting experience. When we first arrived a few minutes early for our reservation they refused to seat us until our exact reservation time, even though there were 4 open tables that never filled.
We ordered drinks and appetizers which were great! Part way though we ordered dinner and after 30 minutes of waiting we were told our food would be right out. Then 15 minutes later we were told the same thing. After another 15-20 minutes the waitress asked if we had received our food yet. We finally got our food after waiting over an hour. They did give us free dessert and bread because they forgot our food multiple times. The food and wait staff here are great and I think we were just in on an off night for them.
Went there and loved the experience. If your in a rush just get food to go. The wine list was a good selection and tells you what to pair with certain meals. :) I will be back and the bread was really good.
Delicious Amatriciana and super cute atmosphere. Reasonably priced for portion size. Will definitely be back.
This is a St. Paul institution. Incredible from scratch Italian cuisine and a welcoming and gracious staff. Carmelo's dining room is warm and inviting. Buy the bottle of wine for the value. If you don't finish it, they will cork it and you can take it home.
Nice little upscale restaurant. Everything was delicious, but the bread they brought to our table stole the show. It was by far the best bread I have ever had. It was light, fluffy, and baked to perfection.
Great local business with excellent food & service. Busy nights, make a reservation and enjoy!
Upper level dining and atmosphere with impeccable service. Great for special occasions. Make a reservation.
We have eaten at Carmelo's for years. They are always extra careful with our dietary restrictions. My partner is allergic to tomatoes and peppers, and I'm a vegetarian. I ordered the Carmelo ravioli, and they made it for me with the spinach & cheese ravioli instead of ravioli filled with meat. My partner got garlic shrimp. We usually get Ceasars salad with our dinners. It's worth the upcharge if you like that better than a regular dinner salad. We love the bread that comes with the meals, too.
I live in New Orleans and am up in St Paul helping my son move in. We ate out at several places during my stay here and this was BY FAR my favorite. The caesar salad was delicious and the bread… the bread was fantastic! I had eggplant parm(which was the night’s special) and my son had chicken parm. Both meals were perfect. I can’t wait to come back to visit my son and, of course, eat here again!! Thank you.
Super cute spot with really good food. We started with the bruschetta which was good, then for entrees had the amatriciana and rosemary chicken - highly recommend both dishes. We'll be back!
Was there last night for a private party. Food was delicious, staff was great! It was my first time there, but 2 of my sisters highly recommend this place. I do now too.
Delightful little spot with real 5 star food, service and atmosphere.
In my opinion, if an Italian restaurant can't make an awesome plate of spaghetti and meatballs, it's not worth trying anything else on the menu. Well, this is just about the best spaghetti you're going to find anywhere. Homemade noodles, meatballs which hold together well but are still a little bouncy, and sauce so good I'm tempted to request it as a cup of soup. Great job, Carmelo's!
Excellent food. Well executed dishes that are unique and tasty. I have had a couple different things and everything has tasted amazing. Their bread is delicious! Take out is quick and easy. Definitely recommend!
Amidst Covid-19 restrictions, this restaurant does all of the proper things and with amazing execution! First and foremost, friendly and professional service. Not hurried, timing was great! Courses came out at the right time and were fantastic. Our dishes look just like the pictures and tasted great. Not too spendy either!
My advice, skip a chain restaurant some night, visit Carmelo's and experience a real restaurant.
Great atmosphere and the flavor was spot on. Veal was a little chewy and would liked to have seen some more capers but, the sauce was great and service tops. Asked my Italian friend if she approved before going, which she did, and will bring her here when she visits again.
Really great food, and despite being short staffed the service was great. Relaxed but beautiful environment, great wine selection. Tiramisu is sincerely the BEST I have EVER had.
Their Chicken Piccata is the best! Also amazing fresh bread baked in house. Nice selection of moderately priced wine by the glass. I’ve never had their desserts I’m always too full after dinner but have heard they are good.
Eating at Carmelo's was a fabulous experience. I had my graduation dinner here, and the food was incredible and so was the service. It was delicious and adventurous, but there was plenty on the menu for my grandparents and little brother to feel comfortable too. The service was impeccable, they really made us feel like family. I recommend Carmelo's to all my friends.
It's an Italian hidden gem. Super clean, great staff, best bread ever and authentic cuisine. I would give it 10 stars if I could
Went to Carmelo's for our daughters 21st birthday. Always a great spot to go for special occasions. Nice intimate restaurant. Not loud, like other places. Food is always great. A fav of our family is chicken Carmelo and chicken parmesan. Wine was great too. Although I think they should do a few more gluten free options.
They opened at 5pm and it was quite and very friendly romantic classic Italian family run business. I ordered their signature appetizer and entree. Both were presented nicely and tasted delicious. Portions were generous!
Very nice first time experience. Had the shrimp and garlic and the only thing that could have made it better for me would have been more garlic and shrimp with the tails removed! My friend loved the added scallops. The fresh bread was delicious. I will definitely be back. Oh and did I say I really liked the big bold red blend!
All the soups and bread are homemade and delicious! My favorite entrees are the Chicken Milanese, spaghetti and meatballs, and ravioli Carmelo. It packs up and travels well, so is great for takeout or delivery.
Only suggestion, offer desserts for delivery if possible!
If you love butternut squash please order the butternut squash ravioli. It’s so delicious and a total fall comfort food. I’ve tried ordering it from all the Italian restaurants in this area and they can’t compare with Carmelos.
This is an "old school" Italian restaurant. It reminds me of restaurants that were EVERYWHERE in the 60s and 70s: the neighborhood Italian restaurant. The food is good (not "great"), the service is GREAT, the atmosphere is cozy. I don't mean to condemn with faint praise. My pasta is always PERFECTLY cooked. The food is hot and comforting. You can get a reservation most days. You'll go home well fed.
I love Carmelo's and have been dining here for 20+ years. Mark and Shelli do an amazing job and the food is always superb. In the age of Covid I have been trying to support neighborhood establishments. Alas, my child is a picky eater and preferred Chipotle this evening, however I just couldn't. So she ordered from Chipotle and I ordered from Carmelo's. Food arrived at the same time, but hers cost a third more and got considerably less. I got an entree - perfectly prepared Chicken Parm, AND side salad AND spaghetti with red sauce AND their famous ciabatta bread (not one slice, not two, not three, but half a damn loaf and it was still warm - YUM!!!). I can't say enough about this place except that I can't wait to dine in again. Fantastic value, and amazing food!!!
I have always been a huge fan of this place. Sadly the last visit lasted only a few minutes! We made reservations a day ahead and yet when it came time to be seated they sat is at the "end" of another families table! I asked why we couldn't have the tables and booths that were empty. The hostess responded with, " those are spoken for someone else". I felt a little insulted! We decided if we weren't good enough for a better table, then we were not good enough to be patrons there!!!
Food was great. Super soft garlic bread. Great artichoke dip. Perfect pasta and sauce. Large portions. Tiramisu was perfect. Great ambiance. A little loud. Service was superb. Great bottle of wine and great coffee too. The perfect date night with my honey.
CONSISTENTLY DELICIOUS. For some reason I feel obligated to counter the negative reviews. I've been here a dozen times, always had great service, never have been overcharged for anything, and think the food is very tasty. It's also great on 1/2 price wine night.
Granted, the decor and space is a little outdated. But it is a family run business - I'd much rather go here than support some chain.
This is a hidden neighborhood gem. A family run small business that gets it all right--excellent appetizer (try the aroncini or whatever the name for risotto balls is), and any of the classic pastas. Even the bread and butter is great. We had been in MN for a family need. We were in the cities for the night before our flight back to Florida. We came across Carmelo's while we were looking for a place to have dinner.
Great food great environment. I thought service was a little slow since there was only 1 server so if you're in a rush it's not ideal. But otherwise they're friendly and food taste fresh and authentic. Love it and will come back later
Noodles could have been cooked longer. Tasted good
Recently discovered this hidden gem. The food was amazing, the service great (our server was Shelly), the atmosphere cozy. The prices were great as well (and if you go on a week night the wine is 1/2 off!).
I started my meal with the house salad with peppercorn dressing. The dressing was so good. They also give you homemade garlic bread that is so soft. For my entree I ordered the seafood cannelloni (seafood mixture of crab, shrimp, scallops, ricotta, fresh basil & sun dried tomatoes wrapped in a pasta sheet. topped with a portabella mushroom cream sauce). It was delicious. The sauce was amazing, the seafood not at all fishy. The only complaint would be that the sauce got a little salty towards the end, but that is somewhat common with white sauces.
My companion ordered the Chicken Carmelo (lightly breaded, baked & topped with fresh crab, parmesan & a lemon cream sauce served over angel hair & garnished with roasted vegetables) which was absolutely amazing! The veggies were so crisp, the chicken was tender, the lemon very refreshing. If I went again I would order this dish, hands down!
Classic Italian restaurant. White table cloths, candles, dimmed lighting and set the stage for a romantic dinning experience. The wait staff is friendly but discreet keeping an eye on their dinners so that all is well. The food, O my! the food! is made from scratch with excellent ingredients! Treat yourself and one you love to an evening at Carmelo's Ristorante.
That was such a wonderful and delicious meal! Best bread, great seafood, spaghetti and personal service. We will definitely be back! Thank you!!!
A white table cloth & candlelit coursed Italian ristorante with gentle, mellow flavored. I liked the atmosphere and wine list but the food we had tonight needed more flavor...and salt. I did looking forward to bread with a flavored oil dip but they had pre-packaged butter bars instead, although the bread was super fluffy, soft and delicious with the butter. The calamari was a little too soft and not crispy enough and didn't taste salted at all... but perhaps the lemon aioli is supposed to make up for it? A slight disappointment, however, overall, the foods would be good for those who are severely watching their salt intake. Service was good, friendly and attentive.
*Shrimp Garlic Aglio Olio, Shrimp Macalester & Calamari appetizer.
*Drinks: a mixed white comprised of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, voigner and moscato: less dry with a hint of sweetness but with a nice, lingering taste. I normally don't like any sweet white but this one was tasty. And hubby's italian beer: light.
Some of these people that write negative reviews crack me up. One of these clowns wrote a 1 star review because Carmelo's closed before 9pm as the business hours state. Here's an idea, call before you come. If it is getting close to closing time you'll know if you should make the trip or if you'll have to go somewhere else. The employees have lives too. Relax a little bit, you'll be much happier. Another joker was critical of the atmosphere, said it was "creepy" - this jabroni needs to find something better to do with their time. I feel bad for you and how unhappy you must be. The last review I find amusing is the dummy that said they went on a busy night without a reservation and had to wait longer than the estimated 15 minutes they were told. You can't be serious. How is it possible that you have survived this long being as clueless as you are?? Next time, make a reservation. You expect the staff to kick people out or rush them as they eat their meals because you were stupid enough to show up without a reservation during a busy time?? I wish we could review people that hide behind their keyboards and write negative reviews over nonsense - most of you are a joke. Anyway, on to my review. I LOVE THIS PLACE!! First time attending was this evening (1/11/19) with my fiancé, friend, and my soon to be in-laws. I loved every bite of everything I ate. Bruschetta: delicious. Tomato basil soup: delicious. Salad w/creamy peppercorn: delicious. Artichoke dip: delicious. Chicken Carmelo: delicious. I can't wait to go back and try something else!! There is one problem, the Chicken Carmelo was so good it will be hard for me to try a different menu item!! We went at 7:30 on a Friday night and it was busy, but our service was A1 and the food was phenomenal. I dig the small space vibe and loved the food. Nicely done, Carmelo's!!
Romantic atmosphere, delicious food, and fantastic service.
Shared the Bistecca Pomabora w/ hubby and we both walked away delighted! Tender, delicious perfection! I can't wait to return to this area so we can visit again. Our server was outstanding too. Authentic!
Lovely, personable & welcoming restaurant. The food was plentiful and delicious. The seafood Canneloni was the best I've ever had; the rolls of pasta were STUFFED and the sauce was worth the effort. Although we had the shrimp & crab stuffed mushrooms as a starter, after getting the sauce on the main course, I wished they offerred the sauce in a bowl with their with their warm bread to sop it up with. A meal by itself. As much as I love Ciattis in Roseville, this little gem will catch more of my attention.
We enjoyed Carmelo’s before Covid and decided to order take out as a treat tonight. Food was as good as usual although we missed the service and white tablecloths in the restaurant!
Don’t miss the Arancini, Scallop and Crab Fettuccine and authentic Arrabiata. Top your dinner off with the Flourless Chocolate cake. Mmmm!
Omg soooooo good!!! We had the Arancini for an appetizer which was delicious! I had the Shrimp Macalaster for my entree which was amazing -- the shrimp were huge! For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake and tiramisu which were both great. All around great food and attentive service, I cant wait to go back!
The food was excellent and the servers were amazing.
I will be back.
Great Date Night spot! Good old fashion 4-course Italian dinner, the quaint and cozy atmosphere will make you forget about the cold and order more wine. Service is always the best (thanks again Shelli!) Try the Arancini and Shrimp Macalester, and save room for the Tiramisu! They can fill up fast so I absolutely recommend calling ahead and making a reservation.
Very cozy authentic Italian food in a comfortable atmosphere. The service is not the fastest but this is not the kind of restaurant you go to looking to get in and out in a hurry. Would be a perfect location for a date. The parking situation is a little dicey and may require a walk off a couple blocks. The price is very reasonable for the quality of food you'll be getting. I highly recommend thier baked ravioli appatizer as well as those entree size ravioli plates. Thier bread is also VERY tasty. Top it off with a good selection of wines and you've got one of those small hidden gem restaurants that you'll get to feel like a pro when you introduce a new friend.
Although they do not have gluten free alternatives for pasta, they do have two items that are naturally gluten free - the veal picatta and the salmon. They were very good but had no gluten free pasta with them. For dessert was a flour free chocolate torte which was also very good.
We were recently in Northern MN for a family need. Before returning to Florida, where we live, we spent the night in a motel close to the airport for our morning flight.
My brother, sister-in-law, husband and I stopped in at Carmello's for dinner. We, at first, sat in a booth which was tight and uncomfortable...we moved to a table which was better. The server brought us bread and butter...we really did expect bread and oil in an Italian food restaurant.
Tom had Chicken Carmelo which was "quite good". My brother, sister-in-law and I all had ravioli that was on the dry side. Tom had 2 beers, the other 3 of us split a bottle of zinfandel. Our bill was $123.64 before we added the tip...a wee bit pricey for what we had!
The service can't be beat, the food was amazing and the ambiance is top tier!!! I love the renovations 🤗 …
I love Carmelo's. The delicious food and awesome service have made this place my go-to for special occasions. If you like anchovies, try the real caesar salad with extra anchovies on top. They're very salty and oh-so perfect with the crisp romaine and creamy dressing. And for an appetizer, try the arancini (fried risotto balls) with marinara. You won't be disappointed.
I have been looking for a great classic Italian restaurant since moving here from St. Louis. This totally fit the bill and was hands down the most delicious pasta I have had since leaving Missouri. Will be returning soon and often!
Unbelievably delicious! We had 2 appetizers one of which was the most amazing artichoke dip I've ever had. For the entree I got pasta primavera with 2 different sauces and I can't even begin to do it justice with words. It was the perfect blend of pasta, sauce and a medley of vegetables. Everyone in my party was beyond impressed with their food. Even my 10 year old son, who is the pickiest eater on earth, said his speghetti and meatballs was like eating a piece of heaven. Ha! We were visiting friends in St. Paul this weekend (we are from southern Wi) and we will certainly be visiting these friends more often now that we know about this hidden treasure!!!
I am a frequent visitor of this restaurant and would highly recommend it. The ambiance is great, staff is great, pricing isn't bad and the quality of the food has never disappointed. I recommend the chicken Carmello and the Toasted Head Chardonnay, a couple of my favorite items!
Outstanding service and unique and delicious food that satisfied even the most picky eaters. Great wine and not too expensive meals. Perfect for a family or a date. You'll want to go back and try something new.
Small Italian restaurant that will steal your heart. Great atmosphere and staff! The food was wonderful. Had a glass of chianti and the homemade ravioli 😊❤ I will definitely be going again soon …
Awkward pickup experience but absolutely amazing food!
We Love Carmelo’s. Hardest working wait staff, with amazing customer service skills. Quiet, lovely place with Fantastic Food. We are sure lucky Carmelo’s is on the neighborhood. Thank You!!
Some of the best Italian comfort food in the city!! The bread is amazing and the tiramisu is a must try!! Thank you to the amazing staff for always taking such good care of your customers!!
We love dining at Carmelo's! This neighborhood gem features delicious homemade family recipes and warm, sincere service. The arancini (risotto balls), Shrimp Macalester, and veal parmesan are not to be missed!
This is a very nice neighborhood restaurant. Food is very nice, reasonably priced. The servers are friendly and not pushy. Good vibe is a plus! Highly recommend!
Great neighborhood, freshly cooked Italian restaurant
The cozy old authentic food perfectly executed dishes. Friendly wait staff family owned feel. Will return again and again!
The food, service, and wine are outstanding! Shelli is fantastic! She makes you feel like you are at home. Oh, and the bread!! Amazing!
Fantastic place to eat, always has great food service, and wine. Chicken Carmelo is a must try entrée. Would highly recommend for a date night.
Best kept secret in town. Impress your date, friends or family and take them here for a quality Italian meal with doting service, decent wine list and great food.

A real Saint Paul treasure
Had a dinner with girlfriend and both set of parents. Small intimate atmosphere with great tasting food and excellent service.
Amazing place, with fantastic food and the best service.
Wonderful food and service. Will be back many times for special occasions or just for fun. Can't recommend enough!
Love this restaurant. Sad that they took the wonderful chocolate coffee off the menu. Still a lovely, cozy place...needs parking though.
This is a tough call between 4 and 5 stars. One of our go-to Italian places. It is rarely busy, food is delicious. Very cozy.
Stopped in at 8:25 pm this eve to a half full restaurant with some tables yet to get their food. A server asked us to wait, and after a few minutes we were told that the restaurant had closed at 8:15. Maybe don’t advertise that you are open until 9...
The food is excellent ! The staff is very friendly. Try the Arincini.
Mark, is the owner/ chef amazing food. The atmosphere is great and The service is second to none. Great neighborhood place.
Good food and good place to work. I would not come here to drink fine wine all night without purchasing a meal as to it is not a bar.
Blown away by the quality of this spot. Top 3 Italian I've had in MN.
Sweet family place, good wine list, fabulous, authentic Italian food. Outstanding tiramisu!
Amazing food even the calamari was bomb at home. Love!
Great food and great service. Support independent restaurants!
Very cozy. Amazing food and good customer service. It's rare to find these days but it's def a winner!
The food here was just okay and a bit over priced. I wouldn’t go back again. The service was lovely!
Overall a good experience. They seemed understaffed. The food was good.
Cozy restaurant with great Italian fair and a good selection of wine pairing. Will be returning

Great atmosphere, good food and good service.
Wonderful Italian food, nice ambiance, attentive service
Awesome little Italian place tucked away in an unexpected location. Really good food and close to campuses.
Cook is not the chef that made the menu.. No love .. No attention to detail.. There are better options...
Great food, terrific staff. One of our St. Paul favorites!
Loved the pasta! Excellent calamari. Great curbside service!

(Translation) What a surprise! Four years living in this neighborhood and it was our first time in this restaurant. The salad is very fresh, the homemade bread is delicious. As a main course we ordered the Carmelo's ravioli and the steak. Great options! Also accompanied by a bottle of red wine. The staff was very friendly. One of our new favorite restaurants.

¡Vaya sorpresa!
