Reviews of Black Forest Inn
Traditional German food. This place is a staple in uptown Minneapolis. Pretty tiny place so make sure you find the right time to go. Stupid warm/hot and cozy I recommend you wear shorts and a tank top even in February. Ask for Underberg after your meal;)
It was pretty busy at dinner on a Saturday evening (we had a reservation) and we weren't given beer meus initially so I was not able to order a beer because the server didn't return after we placed our orders. The food and atmosphere were terrific. Although it was full, it didn't feel crowded or too loud. Sidenote: There was an interesting bathroom with two toilets in an open space.
Had the Jagerschnitzel, it was very good. Had been craving German food for awhile.
The food was a little too vinegary for me.
The meats were dry and the potato salad tasted weird.
The atmosphere was unique just tended to be more of a bar feel than a restaurant feel.
I would go back to get more of their potato cakes.
Not sure if they still use the strapline "do German it's not funny" but it is the most authentically German thing that I've encountered in North America. Have eaten here quite a few times, & the food has always been top notch, consistently over about 20 years now I think. If you like Schnitzel, etc, you'll love this place.
After reading a few recent reviews I was a bit concerned that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered. We were seated right away in a cozy room with two fireplaces. The tap list has plenty of authentic German beers and I was happy with the two that I had. I don't know of anywhere else in the area that I can get my favorite Köstritzer schwarzbier on tap. The food was authentic and great, every bit as good as any food I've had in Germany.
Everything was as German authentic as possible. The food was delicious and filling as could be. So much homemade vs prepared from commercial. The service was excellent. Definitely worth coming back again.
They served us the first gluhwein of the season along with some sausages. My favorite was the bratwurst. We were served with some scalloped potatoes and toasted bread. The hot wine was excellent. Along with my European counterpart we were both very satisfied with a quick snack.
Food and service were great. The only downside was the beer...altho I love German beer, the beer had a taste of dirty tap lines. Your German beer should be your signature, not an afterthought. Do better.
Loved the atmosphere, food was good. Don't know what happened to rest of my pics, or comments from years back so... parking was a little hard to get. This place unique for sure.
You MUST come in today for Spargelfest! The Spargel-Artichoke dip is creamy, tangy delight! The Spargel Pierogi are heavenly with a devilish dash of a kick!! And while I adored the pear cider and cabbage rouladen, the BEST part of the meal was the Spargel-Rhubarb torte! Asparagus in a sweet, kirschtorte?! YES!!!
The food here is fine, but compared to the Hudson German restaurant or making German food at home it's just not up to par. I had thought since the restaurant was in Minneapolis it was just be the absolute best, but it was just ok. We had the Jager schnitzel, beef stroganoff, cheese and spaeztel casserole, and ham, cheese, and sauerkraut balls. When we first walked in we stood around 10 minutes waiting to find a staff member and then someone starting their shift came in and sat us. It seems that maybe they were short staffed which is common. Oh and the red cabbage has a bit too much cardamon which wasn't my cup of tea.
The foods is tasty And the price is decent. This restaurant should be Germany cuisine but seems have been localized with American taste. The apple beat highly recommended.
I loved the atmosphere of this place, as it was adorable and quant. Very peaceful and nice to be able to visit without shouting over loud music or bar noise. The food was authentic German. Attentive wait staff. If you like German, make this a destination.
Almost 35 years ago we sat in one of the booths here and planned our wedding. Came back to see it again. The decor is as I remember it, very comfortable, and very German. Great Atmosphere. The food is outstanding and they have a large selection of beers. The outdoor patio is very pleasant. Give Black Forest Inn a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Great place! Delicious food, including several things I’ve only seen in Germany. My wife and I opted to have our Sacher Torte (okay that from Vienna) and Haselnuss Torte first before our lunch and it was a great decision.
Always a gem to visit; looking forward to spending more time here once the pandemic passes. In the meantime, there is a lovely patio and an excellent selection beers.
Didn't make it in time for food - served until ten during the week and 11 Friday and Saturday. Service and atmosphere was stellar and drinks were made perfect. Totally coming back for food and making a trip just for it!
Very nice and cozy restaurant. Food tastes pretty good although I was little disappointed by the sauerkraut as it was little extra sour. The black forest cake was amazing!
Fun German pub with patio. Decent brats, beer, and interesting asparagus dishes (including pierogis and asparagus ice cream—which didn’t quite land well in flavor) during Spargelfest. Good portions, just overpriced for the very casual atmosphere and service.
I have been dining at this establishment for years. Never have I had anything bad. The food tends to be delightfully savory and the drinks top shelf. The decor alone is worth a visit. Utterly beautiful. No place else like it around!
Good place and fun atmosphere. Picture is the Viel Schnitzel
Love the history, decor and tasty beer selection. Try the beer flight. I had the Black Forest cake ..the patio is delightful. Will try food next time.
Great, friendly service. Good authentic German menu choices with some American food choices too (hamburger for my young son). And a pretty good selection of German beer along with some good local craft beers (and the usual American macro brews). I loved the ambiance, but the lighting could be a little softer.
One of a few authentic German restaurants in the Twin Cities. A lunch bratwurst with a Spaten Lager pair perfectly well together. Also the bread pudding is a perfect way to end your time at Black Forrest Inn!
Very nice German restaurant. Extensive menu. Gravy was even made to order. Enjoyed a nice evening with friends and family.
As German as it gets, always top quality food. We try to visit everytime we get to minneapolis, & it's never been a disappointment.
Pretty good German food, atmosphere is reminiscent of when I was in Germany. Service was great as well.
I've had the Hungarian goulash and the beef roulade here. They were both pretty good but I wouldn't seek them out.
The pretzels with the cheese sauce were the best part of the meal. Someone in my party got fish and chips and it was surprisingly good, I would even consider getting it again, but I probably wouldn't go to a German restaurant just for that.
Delicious German food in a quaint atmosphere. They have a sandwich section on their menu if you're not all in on a hearty German dinner too. The patio is large and secluded from the busy intersection. They have homemade liquors and interesting cocktails I need to go back and try.
A very fun Oktoberfest experience. Music, food, bier, a giant pretzel, it was all here. I enjoyed my visit very much as look forward to coming back!
I hadn’t been to the black forest restaurant in years, and it was a pleasant return. We decided to go for Father’s Day knowing that it was a favorite of one of our dads. Everyone loved their food, we shared quite a few different dishes many beers and left happy.
Good German food. The splaetzle was outstanding in the beef stroganoff! The side dishes of red cabbage were sweet but had too much cloves. Sausages were good but don't order the fish and chips. Good choices of beer.
In spite of a lack of staff, our server/bartender was efficient and cheerful. Traditional German food at a great price, beautiful decor. Our favorite restaurant when we visit Minneapolis.
Like everywhere, under staffed, but the try really hard.
I like the food, and they have a nice selection of beer.
This place was pretty good. Food was great and the portions are pretty big. Our bartender gave great drink recommendations too. The staff seemed pretty disorganized thought they were overwhelmed and there weren't that many people there when we went
Gets a good review for the atmosphere. Service was excellent. Food was just ok. I had veal, it was a bit chewy. We had potatoes pancakes for the table, they were dry and almost seemed baked instead of fried. On person commented that they tasted like they were made from instant potatoes?
Had a wonderful and delicious dinner with our family, including 2 grandchildren. The portions were generous and quickly served. So glad they made it through the difficult past 2 years.
Great German food, friendly service and beautiful patio dining at this historic south Minneapolis restaurant.
I have been to Black Forest Inn a total of five times now, because I wanted to leave as accurate a review as possible. German cuisine is not one of my favorites, and to be honest; on my list it rates right beside of Irish or Scottish cuisine. With that said, the food has always been cooked properly, and it rates among the highest quality German dishes I've had in my life. The restaurant always seems clean, and have always received nothing less than stellar service. If you enjoy German food, or want to try it for the first time, I highly recommend it.
Great patio seating with heat lamps even in the cold! Excellent food—really warms you up. Highly recommended!
Pretty good food + good selection of German beers but prices are pretty high for what you get.
It has great ambiance but I felt like the food is too expensive. My saurbraten had 2 small pieces of meat and a ton of spaetzel with not enough gravy; very stingy. It wasn't that great either, it was just okay. I got a dinner roll and a small bowl of cabbage. This was not worth $25! My husband liked the cabbage, German potato salad and the curry sausage but the bratwurst and polish sausage was just ok. Besides that, the bathroom was filthy! Floors dirty, toilets had fecal spray and urine spray on them. Counter looked like it hasn't been wiped in a week and no paper towels. What can I say, I was disappointed and I won't be back.
My favorite bar in Minneapolis. Great beer, hearty food and fantastic servers. The patio is a gorgeous spot to relax with friends.
Love this German restaurant. We had the Schitzel, Sausage Platter, Warm spiced wine & Black Forrest cake, delicious! Our server was great and attentive! Will be back again.
Great food, I had Weiner Schnitzel, good service.
Food was amazing, very friendly costumer service! The only downside was that beverages (soft drinks coke,Pepsi, etc) were too sweet
Awesome German beer selection, big menu with lots of authentic German dishes, and fun decor with paintings, taxidermy, and shields. The kitschy level was just perfect! I used to live in Germany, and this restaurant gives a solid nod to traditional restaurants there. Overall a fun, unique place to go. Only took away a star because the bathroom was a little dirty (not horrible, but definitely needed attention both in cleaning and updates) and because the service was a tad slow, but also not horribly so.
Delicious German food! Good value!
I've been walking past this restaurant for years and finally gave it a try and almost immediately ended up going back.
Very flavorful food. Decent selection of beer in large quantities. Not very vegan or vegetarian friendly.
A lot of the menu is a bit on the pricier side (20s-30s), but they still have some good options for under 20 dollars.
Fun fact, they give you a free mug if it's your birthday.
Went here as we were craving some Octoberfest-type food and this place didn't disappoint. Could have used a larger serving of red cabbage and a bit less schnitzel, but it was all great.
Excellent food with a great variety of German cuisine and beers. Great patio for eating outside and great service. Highly recommend this landmark!
Food was great. Service was a little slow since I think there was only one waiter. Took a while to get seated, but overall a good experience. Love the German food.
Large indoor dining areas, intimate corner bar, secluded outdoor shaded or sunny patio. The large stainless steel and water sculpture provides a wonderful distraction from all the inner city noise.
Great food and atmosphere. Cool patio and delicious food.
The prices are a little high..the goulash was not very good. The schnitzel was very good. Good German potato salad. The service was slow.
Not a lot in the way of vegan options, but it definitely has gotten better lately. Excellent German beer selection.
The pork sandwich isn't as good as it used to be but still worth trying it.
PHENOMENAL German style restaurant. Pricing is a little on the high end, but when you taste the food you understand why. The decor is classic and the staff was great.
We're pescetarian and we still find something to enjoy at Black Forest Inn, so carnivores rejoice! They source ingredients locally and do their own butchering and baking. The menu is quite seasonal. If they run out of a cut of meat, it's back off the menu. We usually get the giant pretzels during Oktoberfest, but we also got the onion tart and spaetzle with cheese. I don't know how they pack so much flavor into those dishes! The interior has always been really interesting, but during forced Covid reduction of services, they did a massive deep clean! (The whole saga was running on Facebook.) It's fabulous.
Delicious authentic german meal. Caution, the food is very rich! Loved the Hazlenut dessert.
Nice atmosphere. Good food. My sauerbraten was on the salty side. Both my brother and father's dish was good. Bon Apetit!
Amazing!! Not pictured, but you have to try the pretzels.
Good solid German food. Decent selection of little plates to share. Herring was a highlight. I likes the Resiling from the Mosel enough to write it down to find a bottle later.
Great restaurant- several delicious, authentic German beers to choose from, unique atmosphere, and lots of great plates. I split a large platter with a friend and we had plenty between the 2 of us. Definitely recommend going!
We found this Jewel of a restaurant. Traditional German style food, server was amazing, he was detail-oriented and checked on us several times. I would definitely recommend this place.
It was empty except for us when we visited for a midsummer lunch, which probably isn't the best time for German food anyway. But the food was good. The walls are decorated with humorous quotes about the place. The building's construction also feels old and authentic with old wood and stained glass windows.
This has consistently been one of our go-to placed for decades. Excellent authentic German food, reasonably priced and great service. If you're into beer they have a fine selection of excellent European and North American beers. And in season, very attractive outdoor dining too Finally, their own free parking just a few steps away.
Starting with the big positive, the decor is excellent and the patio was GORGEOUS! Now for the not so great...the food was decent - nothing extravagant, especially for the price. I was with a native German who was unimpressed. While the patio is incredible, the chairs were very uncomfortable. Additionally, the weight staff was a bit odd and not the most diligent. Overall, not a bad experience but likely not worth the cost of $16 - $28 a meal.
The food was kind of average. The schnitzel I had seemed like it wasn't seasoned at all and it was pretty tough. The spaetzle was kind of loose and crumbly and the gravy that came on it had kind of a store bought beef gravy taste and consistency. Seems like a decent place but the food didn't feel worth what they charged.
I've been coming here since 2013. For a while, I was a regular. The food is good. This is the best German restaurant in Minneapolis. The vibe is much closer to the vibe in Germany than that other German bar/restaurant in Minneapolis. They have a nice selection of beer and have many seasonal celebrations. They aren't quite fests but that's hard to pull off in the US. Go here for beers or a good dinner. You'll love it and love the neighborhood.
Excellent German food and a beautiful outside courtyard!
Went last night with a party of six. Had no trouble getting a seat, but things sorta went downhill from there. Slow service, distracted waitress, no ambiance whatsoever. The food was good, but it would have been nice to have the apps served before dinner, not with dinner! Also, didn't receive one of the apps we ordered, but it showed up on the check (tho' the waitress did have it removed). My wife's fish & chips were the worst looking excuse for this meal I have ever seen & the tarter sauce had no flavor. Yes, I know this is a German restaurant, but that's what she wanted. The rest of our meals were enjoyable.
This place seems to be resting on it's almost 50 year history. And with so many good eateries in the immediate area on Eat Street, I would think Black Forest could take their game up a notch. Loose the salmon colored tables, improve the decor, brighten the place up, have more appropriate background music (come on, this is a German restaurant, so why the piped in 60/70s rock Muzak?).
3 stars may be too much, maybe 2 1/2.
Good service and cozy atmosphere! Fair portions at high price. Bf and I tried the Ribs and Kraut along with the Reuben Sandwich. He enjoyed the ribs. The mashed potatoes that came with his entree were the tastiest. Menu describes the Reuben being the best in town... it was pretty good, not great though. Overall, the sandwich was dry and salty. Homemade bread was over toasted, unfortunately. Homemade fries and thousand island dressing were good. Maybe next time, I’ll try a beer with sliders.
We ate on the patio, real vines with grapes growing! Delicious food. I love the inside too-like being in Germany! I felt the food was healthy, as well as good!
Very authentic German food, high quality beer and food selection. We tried the Pork Schnitzel which was wonderful. The atmosphere here was comfortable and had some nice decorations. Service was great and we got our food very quickly.
Amazing and wonderful German food. Staff is warm and kind, food is excellent, and the beer is perfect. The Ham and Sauerkraut Balls are a great start to dinner, as is the Potato Pancake. The Sauerbraten, the Paprika Schnitzel, and (of course) their Bratwurst Dinner are all excellent. Try the Chicken Curry Sausage as an alternative to the brats. My wife and I always argue over which dessert is best - the Black Forest Torte or the Sacher Torte.
But go and enjoy some amazing German food. You won't be sorry.
Excellent German food. We all ordered different foods and we all loved what we had.
Restrooms should be remodeled. Other than that loved the place. Great patio.
I liked the decor. Food was fine. Fries were a little sad. Service was good. We sat inside. There was an outside area that looked nice, too. Nice place for drinking, less so for dining. Arguably like Germany itself.
Sat at the bar, waiting for my order. Had an excellent conversation. Mostly of the neighborhood, then and now. With the bartender. Their outside patio is, absolutely something to be experienced. Very very nice!!!
German food is definitely a comfort food. We liked all of our four different meals with several different beers and spiced wine. The wait staff was very helpful. We had a pleasant time.
I used to come here years ago when I lived in the neighborhood, and absolutely adored the place. Came here recently with some family, and sadly it seemed something was amiss. The menu and food has not changed (which is a good thing) but the rest of the experience was strange and disappointing.
My wife and I got there before the other guests, and were promptly served some beverages. The rest of the party showed up a couple of minutes later, and then it took 20 minutes for anyone to come back around. A male server then comes by and asks how my wife and I got our beers in a slightly accusatory tone. I told him the other server took our order when we came in .... He just looked at us puzzled walked off into the kitchen without asking if the other guests wanted anything. 10 minutes later after no one had come by, we ended up have to go and ask the original server if anyone was going to stop by, which she then did immediately.
It was sort of busy, but didn't explain the very bizarre vibe from the staff. I know everyone can have an off night, but it was just very confusing. Food was the same as it was 15 years ago which is why it gets a 4, but at that price with that service I might try and try a different German spot next time.
I love the atmosphere. Lots of beautiful artwork. The food is slightly different and nostalgic of my German grandma. There are lots of fun events during the year. Their baked goods are especially good. The beer selection is very good aswell if you aren't into hoppy stuff that is popular everywhere else. They also have parking which is rare for the area.
We went with some out of town friends for dinner. The food was good. He loved his beer (dark, German). There were many amusing signs to read while waiting for my children to come out of the restroom. The patio looked lovely. And there is off street parking available behind the restaurant off of Nicollet.
This restaurant serves the most delicious and authentic German food I've ever had. It's a little pricey, but well worth it. It's a great place to go for a special occasion.
Fantastic food with a rotating seasonal menu, in addition to an extensive list of mainstays. Rotating taps, tons of imported beers, wine, and ciders. Easily the best patio on Eat Street. Attentive service with genuine recommendations rounds out the experience. Worth the wait, if there is one!
; We've made reservations and showed up on time while the other half showed up late. Our waiter was very patient and understanding with all the questions and decision delays. The food was good. We had tried plenty of different dishes, veal, lentil soup, pate, a giant rabbit leg (lol, okay maybe over-exaggerated) - all was delicious! Apparently the bone marrow dish is a very popular dishes and goes out of stock quickly. We had beer flights, which was great to try if you aren't sure what beer you'd like. Parking kind of sucks, but we got lucky with street parking right in front of the restaurant entrance. There's a nearby parking lot for customers as well.
Make sure to tip your waiter/waitress well, regardless, but more especially if your party is a bit complicated to deal with lol bless his soul for his kindness
If you are looking for true, authentic, Bavarian cuisine this is the spot! The mastermind in the back is a true artist. Worthy of a quick stop after work, dinner with the family, or even catering which is what we are doing now!
This place has been around for over 50 years and is still family owned. Their space is perfect and their courtyard patio is gorgeous. I often enjoy my visits and bring my mother here for Mother's Day and her birthday. They do great little events year round. I highly recommend the sauerbraten.
I needed a place to host an unknown number of guests for a post-memorial service lunch. Gina and the Black Forest came through for me with a warm, inviting room and great food and service. We comfortably fit 40+ people in the side dining room with a buffet. Highlights: lentil salad, onion tart, brussel sprouts, and they made a delicious chicken paprika for us, I wish it was on the menu. I cannot imagine a better experience from planning to settling the bill. Thank you Gina.
Really enjoyed my first visit to this Twin Cities institution. The food I tried was far better than I expected. I liked the dark wood look of the interior and found the space very comfortable. The beer selection isn't huge, but is good.
I came to this Restaurant for lunch during my German Field Trip. I came to this resturants for the first time and it was exceptional. The Restaurant has a cozy environment with public tables. The food they serve is authentic. As a South-West Asian American, I am usually around bold and spicy food, so I expected to not taste as good. But as a open minded individual, I truly enjoyed the food. During my time here, I had the spaetzel and cheese casserole. It was really creamy, cheesy, and warm. Also, I had the sauerkraut and red cabbage. The sauerkraut was really moist and the perfect amount of sourness. The red cabbage was my favorite for its sweet and sour combination. I had an exceptional time here and I will come back again. Thank you for the experience.
I read the previous reviews and visited for the first time during the 50th anniversary weekend on the recommendation of a co-worker who says this is his favorite restaurant.
We visited during Sunday lunch. The staff was attentive, the restaurant was clean, the food was delicious and authentic. My dining partner thought the Black Forest torte cake was dry; I thought it was fine combined with cream cheese and cherry filling and whipped cream. I'm not a fan of soggy cake. We enjoyed the German beer flight which gave us a nice sampling of the available brew; all of them were good regardless if you like your beer light or dark.
Whatever problems the restaurant may have had in the recent months, they seemed to correct them for their anniversary weekend. We enjoyed our experience and will return in the future.
I've been going to this German restaurant for years. The german beer selection is limited but ok, the menu has not changed since forever, I like the Stroganoff (which is a Russian plate but serve with spaetzles) Goulash and the Sausage sampler. The service depend on the server, I had bad luck with new servers (they forgot to bring bread and butter, they forgot my order) the older ones know me and I know them. The bar is cozy and have some tables behind the bar which sometimes is a good place to eat with a friend. The restrooms have been remodeled and now are unisex.
Amazing food and amazing waitstaff! Made my brother-in-law's birthday dinner a great success!
Visiting family and friends in Minneapolis and decided to give Black Forest Inn a chance during their Oktoberfest season. Overall atmosphere was good. Cute outdoor area. Be cautious when drinking beer outside, there were wasps flying around our drinks which was slightly unsettling. German beer choice was average and prices were fair.
Authentic German cuisine served in an old world decor and atmosphere. Strong recommendations for the rouladen, fried cabbage and spaetzle, but there are so many wonderful dishes on the menu. Great selection of German beers on tap, too. Prosit!
We have been going to the Black Forest Inn for over 30 years. Yes, we have German on both sides of the family. I am big on atmosphere, and I always feel like I have stepped into another time and place. The decor makes me feel like I am in a quaint and charming German village. It's like visiting an old friend. Now about the food. The four of us had hasenfeffer, beef roulades, goulash, red cabbage, spaetzel, German potato salad, whole grain rolls, and great tap beer. Everything was great. The service was helpful and attentive. The evening meal was quite fun and well worth stopping at this restaurant.
Great authentic food made on-site by the owners, excellent selection of beers and friendly staff.
They have some tasty German food and beer. There are a few different seating areas, all with their own charm: a standard dining room area, cozier dining nook area, bar and pub area and secluded outdoor patio for nice days. There is a parking lot around the block that is free, too. Sometimes, they hold events in the building next door to the patio.
Good beer sampler, good weizen.
The place reminds me of my grandma's house, and I don't mean that in a disparaging way; rather it's cozy and authentic. Same goes for the food - authentic. Great place to go if you're craving a real German dish
Excelent the Server was amazing and very kind 10/10🥰😍
Edit:
Great traditional german food and beer. If you are in the mood then this is the place!
The pate is great and the veal wiener schnitzel is worth the trip alone. Miss Germany? Eat here.
I first visited Black Forest Inn over 30 years ago. I remember it being cozy and comfortable with great German food. The food is still delicious, but the ambiance is sad. The tables were set with cloths that were more Italian and the napkins were paper, water glasses were plastic. The lighting was VERY bright and could not be dimmed. What used to be fine german dining has become more cafe.
Excellent brat & potato salad. The ambiance in and out seems a bit worn down - but the great food makes up for that!
Excellent food..( potato salad as good as great grandma's recipe..), good service..fun & interesting decor..now on my A list
Had a lunch for 10 people on a Saturday. Not busy. Good service and not rushed. Much of the food was dry however. Some was almost inedible. Good beer though. Free coffee cup if it is your birthday.
The food was great. Slightly on the expensive side but worth it. The service however was less than satisfactory. And i know it wasn't busy. 3 tables total. It was hard to get our servers attention, he was over at the bar. And after waiting 20 minutes he finally came over and asked if we needed a box and the check. Great place for take out.
This was my favorite Minneapolis restaurant when I lived here (1990s) and I still love it. The food and service are very good, but most of all I love dining outside on their patio. The geschnitzles mit spaetzel were as good as I remembered. I still don't like red cabbage, but that's not this restaurant's fault.
Love the old school German menu and great beer selection. The chef's are very helpful with menu description. Awesome bartenders, willing to let you try a sample of beer!
the meal was excellent, had Jaeger Schnitzel, mushroom sauce, red cabbage and spaetzle and glass of German beer. As good as i had in Germany in June, schnitzel was cooked perfectly (very tender) and also there were lots of customers which added enjoyment to the atmosphere, like in a German Gasthaus.
My experience was exceptional!
I decided to call Black Forest during the pandemic for take out food. They have constantly been a favorite of mine for almost 50 years. Everything was ready for me including their upbeat attitude. It made my day and the food was almost priceless!

Needs new tables and chairs for sure. Food like fish and chips, onion rings needs different breading. Ambience was dated and drab. Dirty vents and floors, needs TLC then maybe German restaurants will strive to do better. Needs new chef and upbeat staff.!
Really great beer prices and authentic German food. They have a large beer garden as well. I would not recommend this place if you are in a rush but if you have some time definitely stop by for some great potato salad and large beer steins!
The wait staff are incredibly friendly. Also, this place has a nice cozy vibe to it. The inside is nice and intimate. Great beers on tap too! Very affordable too! Defenitely coming back.
Lovely night on the patio with a cider and a lentil/spatzel salad. Topped off with Black Forest cake! We had a wonderful server- warm and friendly, engaging with us and other tables...
Cozy place, authentic German food and drink. The menu and ambiance changes with the seasons, so if you've only gone in the winter, go during the spring or summer and sit out on their delightful patio.
This is fairly authentic, including the a la carte menu (for example, salad is not included.) My favorite when I lived in Germany was Rahm Schnitzel, which is Schnitzel with cream sauce. Here they call it Jaeger Schnitzel. The spaetzle is fantastic. I really enjoyed the Black Forest cake for dessert. They source from local places and use family recipes. Oktoberfest is fun, as are other celebrations.
We love the Black Forest Inn. We have frequently enjoyed the bar and restaurant over the years. The garden is wonderful with its trickling fountain in the summertime. We lived in Germany for many years, and it's a real nostalgia trip coming here. The staff are all as nice as can be - (unless they've only just encountered one of the mean ones below! )
Not as good as expected. Kind of seemed like it was too good to be true. They charge a LOT for what I’m not convinced is good quality food. Had the Ruben and was disappointed with the dressing tasting like Miracle Whip (yuck!). It wasn’t good and the mixers were from concentrate. Not a place I’d come to the cities to go back for.
I love the Black Forest Inn, partially nostalgia, i had lot of dates there as a younger man, partially for the beer, which has always been good, and partially because the quality of the food has been consistently good for so long. The menu doesn't change much or often, but there are several great choices. The bar is cozy in the winter and the patio airy and pretty in the spring and summer. The Black Forest is an institution of Minneapolis and like visiting an old friend.
Great German beer selection! The best German restaurant on Nicollet Ave
I lived in the area for 13 years and now I am moving. Black Forrest is what I am going to miss the most. With so much on Eat Street it has remained my favorite restaurant in Minneapolis.
This place has a fun and family friendly ambiance, and really delicious dishes. Very nostalgic if you enjoy German style food!
It may take longer if you have a large group.
German. Comfort food. Minneapolis. - 3 phrases you don't expect but what you should expect is traditional German food and tasty dishes to boot. Try the bratwurst plate for a bit of German home cooking and finish off with some great desserts. Spaetzel is a staple and theirs has been on the Food Network.
Didn't like that they "cleaned" the table next to us by flipping the used table cloth upside down. Kept 3 stars because parking is abundant, service was fast, and portions were big. Flavor was ok.
Wonderfully authentic, traditional German dishes that are to die for! The goulash was incredible! Huge portions too! Quaint and cozy, and very friendly staff!
Absolutely love this place! Food and beer is fantastic, always had great service here. Where else can you find such iconic decor!?
Fun atmosphere with a great (though simple) menu selection. The schnitzel was excellent, and the portions were good for the price. Great drink selection as well.
Wait a minute! I guess I do like German potato salad and warm sauerkraut. I didn't know they tasted good until eating here. Nice patio too.
Half reuben is a sizeable delicious treat!
Fantastic food, schnitzel is a little different than schnitzel from Wien but still damn good. Hot potato salad caught me off guard but was still asking what other customers were eating on the way out in preparation for return trip...
Great food, awesome atmosphere...
Loved our food, and the atmosphere was great too! We sat out on the covered patio area, and I had the Wiener Schnitzel... it was excellent! I definitely recommend this place for a unique option!
This is a perfectly fine German restaurant. The dishes range from average to good, and they have a reasonable beer selection. It's a great idea for hosting large groups, too.
Wonderful food and a cozy atmosphere. This is not a pretentious place, but it is home, typically quiet, and the German menu has some rare finds for MPLS. Try the ham balls appetizer!
Between the excellent food, drinks, and unparalleled service, the Black Forest Inn is well-worth your time. Whether you're a Minneapolis local or just a visitor looking to challenge their palate with a new kind of cuisine (that is, German), look no further then this delightful restaurant on 26th East Street. As a Wisconsinite passionate about great beer AND brats, I think I can back these statements up by virtue of where I'm from.
We visited during a busy dinner hour. The six of us had a variety of brats, schnitzels, ghoulash (sp?), and other dishes. All of us were immensely satisfied with the entrees, complimentary bread, and beer we ordered. All of us are from Wisconsin.
As far as the negative reviews go, just remember, people have their off days. It's normal and human and the negative reviews should not be indicative of what you should expect at Black Forest Inn.
Our server, Colin, was one of the best I've ever had. He had quick witted quips that got our table laughing, innate knowledge of dishes/combinations, and the ability to efficiently juggle a multitude of tables at once during the evening rush. As a former server who knows the hardships of the job, I was colored with various shades of IMPRESSED, ADMIRATION, and AWE STRUCK
Don't miss out on this dining experience!
I have been here many times. I would highly recommend it if you like German food, or at least German beer. The Christmas Market is a fun experience if your need help picking a time to go.
I attended a cooking class at the Black Forest Inn to learn how to make Rouladen. There were about 19 people in the class, which was a few too many for the space we had. The class wasn't hands on for most of us, but we enjoyed a little gluehwein while we watched Chef Christ slice the beef for rouladen. Then class members assembled the rouladen, rolled them up, and into the over they went. We watched a nut strudel as it was being prepared and we also watched while rotkohl was prepared. Afterwards, we all enjoyed a fantastic dinner of salad, spaetzle, rotkohl (red cabbage), rouladen, topped off with spaetzle, coffee, and their special gin. It was a fun time and a great dinner! Getting lessons from the owner and his family was a lot of fun and we felt that we were really getting the 'special treatment'. Great place for an authentic German dinner.
Best Servers, very polite, not super busy, and the food is so good. They have a good atmosphere and vibe in this place.
I think with the right wait staff the experience could be a lot of fun. Felt rushed, food arrived 5 minutes after ordered, fresh? In and out in 35 minutes for a not so inexpensive meal.
Darling decor, delicious entrees, though was not as impressed with the sauerkraut-swiss-corned beef appetizers as I'd hoped I would be. Awesome strolling accordion player! Love this place!! :)
Food was great we both enjoyed it. Waitress was ok a little slow for how many were there but did ok. The only actual complaint I have is parking. The lot was full and the restaurant was nearly empty (had just opened that morning).
Good food, exceptional beer, a famous patio, and a bar area that is always frothing with a quirky conversation. Kill the keg night is always around my birthday and that's when I am sure to be at this lovely establishment.
Einfaches Essen und Trinken. Don't know if this is a definite tribute to Schwarzwald food, but I do enjoy the decor and German beers. Food I've tried is nothing to write home about, but as someone who speaks the Deutsch and has lived a little abroad, I can appreciate the authentic touches. If I ever want to show someone what Spaetzel or Scnitzel should taste like, I take them here.
Definitely better than Gasthof's in Nordeast!
Another Minnesota classic. A veritable Gibraltar, buffeted but unmoved by changing styles and restaurant trends. Likely a similar, if not exactly the same, menu as it was when I was a young lad, Black Forest is German comfort food and traditional classics. Your various schnitzels, krauts, strudels, and sausages are all well represented. Love their spaetzle. A fine selection of German beer. Ein prosit der gemütlichkeit!
The service was absolutely wonderful. I love German food, and they certainly didn't disappoint us. We had rotkohl und stroganoff und schnitzel and were happy.
Decorations 4.5. Servise 4.5. Food is just ok, compare to Bavarian, no similarities. I wood say 2.5 for food, don't know maybe because it's an original 60 year old menu? Pressure valve on the radiator was wisteling all the time, dripping water on the wooden original floor where ants found their food source.
cake was good. If I stop by there next time only for beer and desert.
I went in the middle of the day for lunch and it was good. It wasn't anything special but it was good, I ate the Weiner schnitzel. I would recommend going there, the atmosphere is awesome!
Excellent food. Seated in a quiet corner, but was not forgotten. Their mulled wine was delicious and very festive. All around a great experience.
Really nice beer garden out the back. The food and service was great. My schnitzel however, was somewhat tiny compared to the norm 😅 …
Great outdoor seating section, great brats, fair amount of classic german on the lunch menu but to really have a good selection, you need to go during the dinner hours. Where else are you going to get Hasenpfeffer?
Wonderful Food And GREAT Beer! It Is Very Cozy And Very Welcoming. If You're Looking For A Nice, Family-Friendly Restaurant With A Fun Atmosphere, Check Out This Very Authentic German Restaurant/Biergarten!
PROST!!
This was a really nice place with authentic german cuisine. The wursts were quite good and the outdoor patio was quite nice and fairly quiet for being in the city. Come here for a good authentic german experience.
If you want a lot of hearty food that tastes good, the Black Forrest Inn is a great place to go. On First and Nicollet with parking behind the restaurant on Nicollet. The parking lot isn't big, so if it is busy, you'll need to find street parking. Be prepared to with share a meal or bring some home because the portions are quite large. Try the pate under the appetizers. Delicious.
If you're looking for some authentic German food and beer, look no further. Oktoberfest was loads of fun, and even on non-oktoberfest days you'll still get a fun atmosphere and great food.
I ordered take out.
I’ve definitely had better potato pancakes BUT THAT ROULADEN!! Tasted just as good as my grandmothers from Germany. I’ll be back!
Cozy atmosphere, food is hearty but a bit bland.
The Black Forest is a traditional German Bistro with delicious food and drink at an attractive price. A relaxed atmosphere decor and a friendly staff make for a very pleasant lunch or dinner.
Awesome German food. The wheat (weiss) beer) Took me back to my time I spent in Germany. A great experience
I've been a patron of this restaurant for over 35 years and I love it. The food is wonderful and the staff is very attentive and friendly. Their Ruben sandwiches are to die for!
I was so glad the rumors were true! The food was fantastic!!! Our server was very nice. Excellent selection of jazz.
The food 😋! This is very authentic German food! It is probably the best in Town …
Very good and authentic German food. Great atmosphere. Wonderful staff. If you're looking for the real deal, this is it.
The French fries and marzapan were great! Everything else we had (spetzle with cheese, sausage combo, and the Ruben sandwich) were all okay.
Love the atmosphere of the place. Lots of woodwork. Patio seating available. Excellent German food. Love the German style beers.
The restaurant was very nice and the food was great. Not as traditional of a German restaurant as I was hoping for, that's why I only gave it a three. But it was a great restaurant.
It is a great place to eat various Euopean food not just for German. I personally like to eat Hungarian Goulash (like a stew).
Old European atmosphere. I literally feel that I sit in some Munich or even Prague restaurant. Try any meat, sausages, goulash (gravy) based dish.
Great authentic German food. Definitely go for the sausage platter and wash it down with a craft beer. Get the patio if you can.
Great German restaurant with excellent Fair, their spatzle is excellent, two thumbs up
The waiters were a little awkward but friendly, the patio was in slight disrepair, but the food was really good! I agree with others that it's a little overpriced too.
My band was pleasantly surprised at how great their banquet room worked for our show. We already booked again for December at the end of this year!
Never had German food before my recent first visit to this venerable Minneapolis institute, and I'm converted. Love the food, the service and the atmosphere.
Used to love this place 20 years ago. Went for lunch and it seems to be getting run down. Not busy at all at noon. The food was unremarkable.
My favorite restaurant in the Cities for the food, ambiance, history, and staff. Shared the BFI experience with my sister and sister-in-law today.
Tasty German food and generous portions in a relaxing atmosphere.
Had the Hungarian Goulash...could have had more spice without overwhelming it. The veal shank is a good choice tho. Nice outdoor patio.
Very authentic German food and beer coupled with a great atmosphere. Check out the patio when the weather's nice!
One of favorite German restaurants in here😊 …
Delicious authentic German food. Not the greatest German restaurant in Minneapolis, but nevertheless they are very good.
German comfort food at its best. I haven't been here since I was in college - 30 years ago. I felt like I was home the instant I walked in the door.
Delicious German food, pleasant atmosphere, and good service. Possibly some of the best black forest cherry cake I've had.
Delightful evening on their patio. Great food. Excellent service
Great patio and cocktails! Have not tried food yet but menu looks very good! Will be back!
Great German food and decor! Waitress very knowledgeable and friendly. Suggestion of having German music playing instead of what was playing.
Authentic German food in downtown Minneapolis. Awesome atmosphere both inside and out. If the weather is nice, eat outside on the patio.
It looks like it's closed on the outside, but it looks very nice indoors. Very well established restaurant and very very good food. 4/5 because they could definitely repaint the outside.
Food was ok, but there are far better German restaurants in the area. Beer and menu selection is quite limited.
Friendly sercice, great food, nice atmosphere
These guys have a nice patio and newly renovated interior. I also like their beer selection...
We came right when they opened but our food came quickly and the cheesy spatzel was amazing! If you like cheese you'll love cheesy spatzel.
Food was good, staff was nice. Would go again if friends were looking to eat some German cuisine.
Always great food. Small selection of German beer, but always good choice to come.
Great Bavarian locale. Cool Wagnerian decor w/ tasty food and a reasonable German and Austrian beer selection. Ausgezeichnet!
If you want good German food this is the only place to go in the MN area
This palace is so amazing but the prices are high
Food was amazing and authentic! The wait was a bit long for it being slow at lunchtime, but our waitress was very nice and the food was definitely worth the wait!
I never rate ANYTHING five stars. The food was beyond good!!! You must go there!!!! Speechless.
Delicious food every time. The patio is comfortable and attractive. Definitely worth a visit
Tasty food, great service, and reasonable prices.
Fun venue! Had a concert in their room across the courtyard. Knowledge staff and very friendly made our visit wonderful.
Love going here. Excellent German food and beer selection. Make sure not to miss Oktoberfest!
Sauerbraten, Spaetzel, beers, roladen, weiner schnitzel, sauerkraut, dinners or lunches, quaint interior. All of this makes for a perfect German fix not to be missed.
Great authentic German comfort food. Fast friendly service. A Minneapolis institution for many decades.
Great food with a 'wunderbar' atmosphere. Plenty of beers to pair with your snitzel or saurbraten, which is the best in town.
Great food and atmosphere. Also have a number of good German beers on tap as well
Was there late, food was ok. I've eaten here before and it was great. Try it at the dinner hour, not 9pm.
Wonderful ambience, great blend of traditional and modern. The food is not fancy, but it is always flavorful and wholesome.
Great atmosphere. Saurbraten was good. Authentic German. Fish was bland. Service good
Super good German good and great service. We had a bigger party and they were able to accommodate us no problem.
Great food with a fun atmosphere. Go hungry as it are going to get good portions of hearty food that will stick with you ... But not as long as the good memories.
fantastic food. They follow Covid 19 rules, so be prepared to eat on patio.
Prepare for onions mixed into the burger patty. It's great if you like them but a ride surprise of you don't...
Lovvvvvve the food, the help is hilarious and Erica, Gina and the family! The best!!!
We loved our food. Service was great. Recommend the Apple strudel for dessert.
We always have a retro good time at the Forest.
I only ate here once but if your looking for something different go here. Has a bar also.. very nice people
authentic german food. delicious. fast service. excellent on tap german beer selection.
Old standby place for me. Friendly, great deutsche cuisine and great maibock on tap!
Atmosphere seemed very authentic. Very good service. Very reasonabley priced. Food pretty good. I would say average quality
The food exceeded my expectations
My father has been a chef here for 33 years. It's amazing and different I love this restaurant..
Love this place little pricey but worth the money I picture a old German grandma in the back cooking home recipe's in the back so so good
Wonderful food. Good beer. Great place to sit and enjoy a meal.
Awesome German food ¡ eating at the patio is wonderful. Don't forget to try their coffee¡
My father in law said the potato salad tasted JUST like how his great grandma used to make it - talk about authentic!
Great venue and they were so accommodating for a large group. Bridget D was so sweet and she seemed to be genuine. .
Great food, great atmosphere. The easier was even able to get us dinner before dinner hours.
Awesome place for some authentic German food and beer! One of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis!
The setting and service we're fine, but compared to prior visits, the Weinerschnitzel was overcooked and disappointing - not what I expected.
Such a great time here. Wonderful food, staff, and service every time. Don't miss it.
Food pretty good, desert good also. Didn't have beer. Old building, not good part of town. Looks run down.
Wow! As you'd expect from a place that has Goethe's 'Mailied' w
Painted on front! They COULD fix, update (men's bathroom, ahem) but don't let that bother you!
Love the German cuisine and the service. Nice place to go for lunch in the spring or summer out back in the garten!
I love German Food. And this place is straight outta the Fatherland!!! I’d give it 10 stars if I could.
Excellent service and great flavors and fresh tasting food, clean restaurant. Their spanokopita (sp) was delicious.
Great German food and German feel decor ... Lunch time was a bit slow at the door waiting time with no one there. The black Forest cake was to die for
Great service, great traditional German food, beer selection is good and easy parking
Best part of the Black Forest Inn is the patio which never changes. The food is good and uniquely German.
Great service and delicious food (and beer)!
Great service. Good food. Patio has become really shabby. I wouldn't bring guests.
The Black Forest Inn has a lovely outdoor patio for summertime dining, in fact, it's one of the best in the Twin Cities.
Great service, excellent food with warm & friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

The food was great. Patio was great. Came back the next day to sit in the bar area.
Excellent food and atmosphere, the goulash is terrific. Authenticity of the food was a major plus too.
Beautiful beer garden and old style European bar. Great prices for good imported beers.
Not terrible. They have great "Minnesota" food. Very much a Scandinavian place.
Haven't been in 15 years it was great as always
Fantastic food and service! I have been here many times and never had a bad experience.
Potatoe pancakes hit the spot! Bird group meeting was super fun and in such a great location.
The place reminded me of a small restaurant in Europe. Went there for beer and desserts. Good service.
If you like old school German comfort food this is the place to go. An icon on eat street.
Sat at bar. Great German beer. Spaetzlale. Red cabbage. Just a nice, easygoing place.
This is a nice place to get a German culture experience in Minneapolis. The decor fits and the food fits the bill.
Service great, not a real fan of German food but liked the spatzel
Excellent service and delicious food. My partner and I will definitely be back!

Best outdoor dining in Minneapolis, second only to WA Frost in Twin Cities.
So many tasty German beers! And a delicious Sidecar too!
Authentic German cuisine.
Awesome atmosphere and excellent German beers on tap
AUTHENTIC German food well done! Big menu.
The patio is a great spot for a date. But be warned, its very traditional and the prices are high.
One of our family favorites for over 20 years, never disappoints.
Good is predictably delicious and enough to take some home!
Beautiful place, but I wasn't wowed by the food for the price
Food was great and the outdoor dining was very nice.
Here's the move: eat anywhere else on Eat St. Then come here after for some cheap wine and patio vibes. Classic.
Excellent food. Lighting is a bit dim in the corners, but is worth it.
Good was good and price too. Just a little crowded due to a birthday group.
This place is soOO cute. Very authentic. Their crutons are outta this world. I recommend this place to everyone!
The food is excellent, and the servers are super fast and friendly.

Tasty German food with attentive wait staff.
Has really true german food, highly ask for the sausages... it's true and really beef and pork!!!
