In town for a conference and can't find anything to eat around the hotel. I googled restaurants around the hotel and found this place. Come here and give it a try. Don't let the outside appearance of the restaurant fool you. The host and waitress are amicable. The setting and atmosphere are perfect. The food is excellent, but my steak lacks flavor. I took a star away for the taste.

A wonderful supper club dining experience at Axel's. We fish fried on Friday 8 July and really enjoyed the well-prepared walleye and shrimp platter. The portions were spot-on and appreciated by us hungry travelers...Service was top notch. Well done Axel's! We highly recommend and will be back next time we're in the Mendota, MN area!

What an amazing Gem!! So lucky to have this beautiful restaurant to go to. Beautiful old school setting and atmosphere. We love the Art hanging on the walls. The food is delicious. My Steak was cooked perfect and was mouth watering delicious. I also had a Wedge Salad, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and yummy Risotto with fresh Parmesan Cheese on top. Atmosphere is very nice, the servers were very friendly and quick and the food was very good. Their menu is not quite accurate on every item though. For example, the fish tacos were listed as pan fried, which I questioned to make sure they were not cooked with flour coating since I have a gluten allergy. When they arrived they were batter fried and I could not eat them. They did take them off the bill and get me something else but if it could be accurately described on the menu it wouldn't create these problems for diners or the wait staff.

Loved this place! Stopped in on our way through for a beer.... had a couple appetizers and we were very impressed with the food, wait staff and atmosphere. Well grounded establishment. A bartender had a little extra brandy Alexander that she shared with us!!! What a bonus. Thank you! We will be back for sure.... and for a full dining experience!

I was slightly disappointed with our overall experience. We had several people in our party have the herb crusted prime rib and it was overwhelming disappointing. Half of it was fat and the flavor was lacking. The asparagus was hardly cooked and was hard to eat. I will say the mussels, risotto, and popovers were excellent. The service was pretty slow. It made it difficult for us to order our 2nd drinks because our server never returned to us after ordering our meals. The atmosphere was really nice and cozy.

Perfect holiday ambience with outstanding food. Walleye and coconut shrimp so delicious. Popovers, salads all tasty. Our server, C., was very friendly, attentive and coordinated our dinner perfectly. Thumbs up to all the staff and the kitchen.

Although it was pretty dark and cold inside (it is currently below 0⁰ outside), Axel's has a very nice atmosphere/vibe. Most of the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There was one person (appeared to be either an owner or manager) who did not seem to be in a good mood). Half of our group had been before, and the other half were first timers (my first time). The Popovers were the highlight of the food. I ordered the Sirloin as the Supper Club with my sides being Green Beans and what should have been the loaded baked potato. My potato did not come loaded and was just plain. How does that happen when on the menu it is listed as loaded? I was fine with eating it plain. The issue was that it was under cooked and hard. The Green Beans were good. The sirloin was massively disappointing. I ordered it Medium Rare, and it was Well done. I cut it in half to see if the middle was better, but it was hardly any different. I should have said something right away, but by the time I was done with the Potato & Green Beans, most of the other's plates were being cleared. I thought I would have a discussion with the waitress about it when she would come around to me, but when she asked if I wanted it boxed up or not I was caught off guard that she didn't pick up that something must have been an issue, and I ended up saying she could take it away. I made the mistake that I didn't let the staff know that the steak did not taste well. When I go to a place with a limited menu like Axel's, and especially one with higher prices, I think the establishment will really focus on each item to make it well and so I am disappointed with how bad this steak was. My waitress was very nice, so that was a positive. I hope this was a rare instance the main entree just didn't turn out well, but I don't think I want to pay that much to gamble on the steak again.

Food was just alright. A little bland for my taste but I see they cater to the older clientele. My halibut was over cooked and asparagus had no flavor what so ever just grilled (I think). The risotto was very tasty though.

Great little restaurant and super nice General Manager that we use to see at one of our other restaurants of choice. Even though, we only visit this local about once a month, they remember who you are and what you like to drink. Thanks again for the great service each and every time we dine in....

Average. Would expect higher quality for the price. Filet was okay and asparagus was cold and large with no flavor. Again, if it was Apple Bee pricing sure, not bad. However it isn't and thus at 30-40 plates one would expect higher quality than Apple Bees. Atmosphere was cozy and warm.

Axel's is always an excellent choice. They have never let us down. You can always count on great service, choice cuts, and fresh fixings. My wife says the pop-overs are reason enough to go to Axel's. Oh, and don't forget to save room for desert!

Here's the deal with Axel's. I mean I get it, it's a supper club type steak joint that's a classy but not classy enough to keep it from having a booth at the State Fair. Nice but not too nice. Good food but not amazing food. What you expect. FOOD WISE the PRIME RIB is seasoned exceptionally well and is served beautifully. The POPOVERS always but the entire table in a good mood. STEAKS are nicely prepared. Most SEAFOOD is fine, though the one huge fish stew dish gets raves. AU GRATIN is a miss for me, just chunks of potatoes with melted cheese. Desserts were mixed, we liked the bailey's cake best. Super fun with family. Great for kids because everyone can draw on table. All in all not bad at all.

Atmosphere is worth going to alone. The drinks were amazing. I got the prime rib which was cooked great but didn't have much for seasoning or taste. The brussel sprouts were delish. I had a friend go there and loves the walleye. 🍒 on top was that they had grasshopper drinks! Like a good ol supper club. We'll be back.

We had a delightful lunch out on the back patio. Very peaceful under the trees away from the street. They a nice lunch time offer where you can pick - soup, salad, and appetizer. I opted for the chicken wild rice soup, beet with feta salad, and the bull bites. A nice lunch on the patio. Our server was fabulous!!!

Out for a belated Birthday meal with my friend. The popovers were wonderful. I had Filet mignon with Asparagus. PERFECT!. Attentive servers. Moderately expensive, but worth it! A good place for special events.

Great waitstaff, and the food was tasty! We reserved an early 5:15 time slot for dinner and although it wasn't busy when we arrived, it quickly filled up. Our dinner service ended up being two hours, which included getting appetizers but not dessert. We don't mind a long dinner service, but we didn't expect it to be quite so long. Other than the long dinner service, we really enjoyed the atmosphere, attentive service, and good food!

Incredible steak and very helpful staff. I had questions about which cut would be the best rare and they brought out someone from the back to answer all my questions. The wine paring they suggested as well was awesome! One of the best steaks I’ve had in the Twin Cities! Great service was an added bonus!

Great location in a quaint area of Mendota. Modern super club vibe. We prefer a table in the bar area, but the dining room is nice and a bit quieter. Food selection is standard fare, meat, seafood and sandwiches but good quality. Everyone enjoyed their meals including the signature walleye dinner. This place has a good vibe and fun atmosphere.

Overall average experience for airport food. The mixed vegetables (onion, bell pepper, mushroom, and zucchini) were a tad undercooked but decent barring they arrived cool. The roast beef sandwich had barely any horseradish so definately ask for some more on the side if that is your preference. The roast beef was very nice with a good meat to fat ratio. Prices are high but is an airport, so not unreasonable.

This used to be one of our favorite places. We were excited to return upon their reopening from the covid shutdown, but perhaps it was too soon. Service was slow. Our entrees took a long time to arrive (they seemed short staffed, so perhaps understandable). A really abbreviated menu during pandemic. Some of our favorites are gone (CRAB CAKES!!! Ribs). Drinks were excellent. Everyone in our group (other than me) had walleye and all said it was ok/good. My soup was ok. Popovers were barely warm. Salmon was extremely bland. “Loaded” baked potato comes bare and dry (not even butter) with a tiny cup of “topping” on the side. Not nearly enough. Cheesecake crust had funky, burned flavor. A really disappointing meal. Will be a long time before I return.

We LOVE Axel's! Been enjoying their food for years. Only one complaint - the amazing butternut squash raviolis are off the menu now so we are less inclined to order these days. Bring the Ravioli back! :) Also, love the Popovers. Fun, classy, vintage touch. Whenever we have Axel's with company they adore the popovers.

Fantastic service for our group of 10. Gotta say though, the food is not as good as in the past. The famous popovers were burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. One person got a baked potato so cold it wouldn't soften the butter. Couple guys mentioned that the beer was not cold. The veggie of the day was broccoli and we were served asparagus without the wait person even asking if that was ok. Desserts were good. We have had a few friends visit there recently and have told us similar tales about the quality. I hope they can pick their game up a little and get back to their usual excellence.

So happy this restaurant is back open. Great food. Great staff. Even the customers are friendly and talk with each other. It is a great place to bike to from both east and west ends of town. Got to check it out. They even have a Friday happy hour. Who does that any more.

Stopped in for lunch for the first time in about ten years because I thought about the Onion Rings and how delicious they are. Should have known better after looking around and the average customer age in here was 65. I am not poking fun at the elderly at all but our taste buds are not the same. The popovers are cool and different and the two different butters it comes with are great. The onion rings are still amazing! I got the trio of: Caesar salad, French Onion Soup and Walleye Fingers. The Caesar salad was utterly forgettable, it didn't taste like it was dressed at all. The French Onion soup suffered from the same lack of taste, it did look really good and was presented well. The walleye fingers were pretty good and the tartar sauce served with them was great. My wife ordered a Reuben with fries. She really liked it, but I thought it was bland and the meat had a weird taste to it. The fries were good. Service was phenomenal and it is in a cool spot.

Went in with my mom and grandma for dinner. Food was good, came out hot and had good flavor, drinks were a bit sweet for our tastes (but still really good!) Highlight was our server, Jordan. He was very upbeat, personable, polite, and had a good sense of humor. He definitely acted like he was happy to be there and cared about the quality of our experience. With all of the difficulties with covid regulations my grandma hasn't been able to go out much, and she really enjoyed it!

Things I liked: The wait staff are friendly and willing to modify the dish to your requirements. I ordered the 9oz sirloin and requested a side of asparagus with no butter or oil. They were happy to comply. Things I thought were unfortunately lacking: One of the party members received their food later than the rest. Also, the portion sizes are far too big. I would rather the portions and the cost be brought down.

The service was wonderful very nice server. My food was not up to par. The prime rib was actually very tough and I had to send back the garlic mashed potatoes because they were cold. Their popovers which they're known for also were cold and you could tell they weren't fresh from the oven because they were very soft.

I can't say enough nice things about this place. We had my Mom's celebration of life lunch here. The ambiance was just what my Mom would have enjoyed. Everyone was so nice, we had a group of about 15 and were in a room to ourselves. The food was excellent. They went out of their way to make our day special. Our server was amazing. She dealt with restricted diets and was very patient with our large group. She made our day. Thank you so much for making our visit a fun one.

After reading all of the reviews on here I was a little weary on how my dining experience might have gone at Axel's. I came here with my parents to celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. The atmosphere is a little dark and the artwork is eccentric. If you're a guy, check out the artwork in front of the urinal lol. To start, we ordered some Pinot Noir and a Blue Moon with some waters. About 15 minutes in we also got their popovers which were fresh baked and warm still (which I appreciated!). I had already perused the menu before coming but decided on the Axels Burger cooked medium. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this burger was! For $15 you get a half pound char-grilled, fresh angus beef burger with applewood bacon, brie and caramelized onions. The combination of melted brie and sautéed onions was divine. The burger was so good that it didn't even need any condiments. The patty was cooked about medium-well, had a perfect pink center, and a crispy exterior. It also came with a hearty portion of french fries. My dad ordered the same burger as me but with a side salad and my mom ordered the a la carte Norwegian Salmon which was a grilled fillet of buttery, cold water salmon finished with herb-garlic butter. The fish looked good and had no fishy scent like some of the other Yelp reviewers have pointed out. They both really liked their entrees which is a win in my book. I will say that while we were waiting for the bill, a waiter walked by with what I presume to be the Axels Walleye and it had a putrid fishy odor that definitely didn't smell fresh! I hope whomever got the dish sent it back to the kitchen as it had clearly gone bad. The odor lingered in the dining room for quite a while but thankfully we got our check and were soon out the door. All in all, a good restaurant to come to on a date night or to celebrate an anniversary. Nothing about the menu was groundbreaking but the burger was perfect.

It was our first time here, and we were meeting a group for dinner. I already knew I wanted seafood for dinner, so I was ready. I ordered mussels for an appetizer (delicious), then came the popovers (oh my), and for the main course I ordered cioppino (sp). The dinner was amazing! The only issue I had was that the restaurant purposely set out extra tables and seats in every inch of space they could find to get more customers. It was obvious. I'm not a fan of loud and crowded restaurants, but I made an exception tonight. Service was good although a little slow because they were overwhelmed. This was Management's issue, not the servers. Overall, I plan on coming back. Make reservations well in advance and be ready to walk a little because of limited parking spaces.

We hosted some business associates from Chicago here on a Saturday night, and the service during dinner was excellent, The seafood entrees we ordered were also exceptional. After dinner however, it became clear through the waitress's body language that she wanted us to leave, so she could close the side room we were placed in. We had hoped to have an after dinner drink as the main restaurant was still quite lively at 9pm. The manager and hostess kindly waved us out the door instead of offering us a different table or asking some patrons at the bar to move to accommodate a group of five. It seemed a bit rude after we had already dropped over $300.

From most of the pics I saw of this place it looked like an upper scale type of eatery, ie, bussing casual to almost formal dress. We were wearing shorts and sport Ts and nice Ts. We seemed to fit right in. The atmosphere seemed to be casual and laid back. Service was great and food was great 👍

We celebrated our 9th Anniversary there this weekend. Amazing food. Top service. We had Michelle as a server she was perfect!! Definitely come back and highly recommend. FYI big chocolate cake is to die for.

I have been here at least a dozen times and never had a bad experience, but my last visit was a disaster. Half of the food brought out was either over cooked, under cooked or cold in the middle. The manager and wait staff were amazing in correcting all the issues. In my conversation with the manager she did inform me there were new people in the kitchen. Would gladly return due to their efforts and my previous experiences.

Secomd visit. Went on Valentine's Day and as expected to was exceptionally busy. They had gotten behind but they apologized, kept everyone informed and worked to get caught up. I had the salmon, my companion had the chicken. The chicken was excellent. The salmon was a little over cooked and didn't have any flavor except for that of salmon. I'm being a bit picky however and it was generally good. The sides and the dessert were excellent. The server was very friendly, prompt and attentive, despite how clearly busy she was. The atmosphere here was slightly loud, but we were able to easily carry on a conversation. Prices were very reasonable to the portions. I would for sure visit here again.

Seafood risotto was barely warm, as were all other dishes served to party of four. It was too thick and absent advertised crab. Prime rib was not flavorful, garlic mashed potatoes were paste. Cocktails were good and so were salads. Menu geared towards the early bird specials crowd. Items were priced about $3 to $5 too much.

For those of us who been around awhile, this is the old Parker house. The ambiance is more open now which makes having a quiet dinner tougher to do. The wait staff was great, checking in on food quality and drinks. I sampled the seafood chowder. It was a bit thick, but i was there at the very tail end of dinner time. Wife had a steak that was done to perfection. We enjoyed our time there.

Went here for date night with my husband. We had the mussels & split a surf & turf dinner. The mussels are amazing! ❤️ We had Jill as our waitress & she provided excellent service! The absolute high light of our night though was the maitre d, Doc who came to see how everything was and let us know he was going off shift but thanked us for coming ❤️ With food & service as wonderful as this we will absolutely be coming back.

Well, the waite staff was the best, I'd have my hair pulled out due to the crowd but Greta kept her cool and stayed on task. Reservations are a must on a busy night like Fridays. Our homemade popovers were the size of half of a boxing glove. Served with 2 different butters ... regular and cinnamon. We both had Chicken Penne which was tossed with a green pesto sauce along with a spicy kick added and it was delicious and enough for another meal. First experience here was excellent all around. That was over a year ago. Tonight was completely different, very poor waitress, waiting on a glass of water for 20 mins is pretty pathetic. Prime rib was warm, slightly above room temp. Flavor was a 4.5 out of 10. Just not worth what is charged. Like I said, two experiences, one was excellent and worth every penny, tonight Applebee's would have been better easily. I know it's hard for restaurants to mimic perfection in food so I was happy to pay but the waitress was a joke. So it's a gamble for a pick. If you don't mind risking 50 bucks a plate on food, then try it. But otherwise not worth the money.

I haven't been here in over a decade since I moved out of MN. It used to be one of our absolute favorite restaurants. Boy has it gone downhill. Want a table at 6:30pm on a Friday night? No problem, Axels has space to spare. It used to be THE restaurant to go to back in day day. Now, the median age in this establishment is at least 65. I guess all the customers came to dinner at 4? Food was overpriced for the meh we got. An overdone steak and the least spicy spicy chicken penne I've ever eaten. I hate writing a review like this as this place used to be amazing, but this will likely have been the last time we'll go there.

I wished that I had found this Axel's sooner! I really like the motif with a mix of booths and tables. The Walley Fingers appetizers are the best as well as the Bull Tips! Popovers come with the meal. Who offers Popovers these days? Axel's does! The sandwiches are of larger portions, salads are very tasty, burgers are of a good cut of meat too. The Carrot Cake and Creme Brulee are simply the best! The service as always been above average. Of the nearly a dozen times that I've been here, I've enjoyed my visit. Will I be back for more? Oh yes!!

We’ve had some amazing meals at this classic steakhouse. You may too. This location is much different than some of the other Axels locations. This one mixes a mean drink, offers fresh popovers and serves a great steak, but the prices are high, the decor is dated and the ventilation needs improvement. We loved the Sunday 1/2 priced apps and wines by the bottle, but that ended. $16 for a butterfly shrimp app is pretty stout and a $100 dinner should be flawless and a lot less crowded, imho. I hope that they update and bring back some value for those to whom money IS important. Several service errors have brought this review down another star. Incorrect orders and steak doneness shouldn’t be considered common at this price level. Maybe we’ve had some bad luck, but the managers were always kind in correcting the errors. Waiting for news of improvement to bring us back to our once-favorite restaurant.

On Monday, August 3rd I hosted a funeral luncheon for my family of 20 following my husband's burial at Resurrection Cemetery. The lunch was fine and everyone was pleased. The total cost was $265.00 plus a tip of $50.00. I was told if I signed up I would receive reward cards in the mail, for every $100.00 spent. All I had to do was show my driver's license fill out the form and I would be signed up. I did that and never received the cards. Two weeks later I talked with a manager and was told there was no record of me having signed up but that we would see that the cards were sent out immediately. Again I did not received them and again I called and was told cards are never mailed but that if I gave my e-mail address I would get them the next day so that I could print them. I was also told I would receive a credit of $300 hence three cards. Well, no e-mail was received and I can't help but wonder if this is some kind of scam to get all my information.

My wife and I celebrated our 1st anniversary at Axel's. I had the Country Club Filet Steak 8oz ($36) and my wife had the Spicy Chicken Pasta. I thought is was perhaps the best steak I have had in recent memory and my wife said she enjoyed her dish very much. We liked how it Axel's took something ordinary like going out for dinner and turned it into an "experience". Between the popovers, soup/salad, potato dish and the entre, it made us feel like we were getting served a four course meal when it was just a normal dinner. The kicker of the whole night was when they gave us their "Death by Chocolate" for celebrating our anniversary at Axel's! I would recommend this place in a heartbeat.
