Reviews of On the Bayou
We came here tonight to celebrate our 7 year anniversary. I fell in love On the Bayou. The food was beyond delicious! The best Shrimp and Grits and Seafood Gumbo I've ever had. The service was excellent! The owner came to check on us and everything. It was an awesome experience.
We ordered to go and it was great!! 👌🏼 The food had great flavor!! We had the fried Catfish and shrimp dinner and the fried Catfish and grits dinner. We plan to order again or go inside to eat!
Absolutely delicious food! Hospitality from the was awesome! Friends and I came from Toronto, Canada for a convention and decided to visit "On the Bayou" for food and was amazed by the quality and taste.
The Catfish and grits was delicious and was cooked perfectly. We also had the Seafood gumbo which was just amazing as well as the restaurant special Seafood poutine with crawfish and scallops.
If you're in the Milwaukee area please pay "On The Bayou" for a genuine taste and experience of Creole/Cajun food
I plan to go to New Orleans this fall so I went to the Taste Of New Orleans at the full entertainment venue at On The Bayou. If New Orleans cuisine is half as good as On The Bayou I am in for an amazing trip. The food is tasty filling and a proud representation of New Orleans. The Cuisine Tasting Menu featured Shrimp 🦐 and Grits. The grits were slightly firm the way I like it with a great combo of spices (with me you can never go wrong with shrimp or grits). I also had the Cajun Cocktail Shrimp, Crawfish Etouffee, Bourbon St. Steak Kebobs, Deep Fried Steak Kebobs, Deep Fried Salmon Bites, Blackened Catfish (deboned), Mardi Gras Veggie Wings (all veggie including squash). What an amazing experience. I love station-style dining. Even the pre-music brought me back to the times of the Commadors, Keith Sweat and other R&B legends. The highlight of the evening was Chris Crain and Mels Spears. They are chemistry at it's finest. I heard they are on YouTube and 98.3 FM. It is so nice that I had an uplifting evening and cannot wait to come back to On The Bayou. Be safe and I will see you there.
Came here 12/23 for our Anniversary & my 25th bday . Absolutely loved it! Food was amazing , as well as the drinks! The vibe of the restaurant is very calming , nice music .. and set up , and of course customer service was outstanding! Definitely will be back!!!
The atmosphere is so calming and welcoming. Everyone there treated me as family and I’m so excited of the things that they have planned for the restaurant and I will be back and bringing others. The seafood gumbo was so savory the consistency in the brew was amazing the shrimp were large and clean I was more than satisfied. I also enjoyed their Hurricane and a tequila sunrise and I was buzzed and satisfied! I can’t wait to come and experience more from On the bayou!
I had the pleasure to share my birthday dinner with some great friends and the wonderful, caring staff at On the Bayou. Even though it was not on the menu Janice and Greg were more than willing to accommodate my request for a Creole style crawfish boil for me and my guests.
In terms of the food, there was nothing that didn't exceed my expectations. We had the poutine as an appetizer which stacked up well against other poutines I've had. The cheese on the poutine was fried with corn and we enjoyed those cheese-corn bites so much we ordered another, separate order of just them. Dare I say I enjoyed them more than standard Wisconsin cheese curds? The main crawfish dish came out hot and delicious. Compared to other crawfish I've had these were slightly less fresh, but cooked better - to perfection. Its safe to say the chef knew exactly what they were doing. Obviously it is a lot more difficult to get super fresh crawfish in Milwaukee than say, New Orleans so I really can't take that away from the kitchen staff, especially since it was off menu.
As far as drinks go, the wait staff greeted us with a Louisiana Hurricane (we had little say in the matter, lol). The drink was too sweet for my taste, but I feel as though that is authentic as this was a southern-style diner. Sweet tea, anyone? Nonetheless, I finished the drink. Once Walter (our waiter) found out it was my birthday he brought me a nice pour of whiskey, and I nursed that throughout the rest of the meal.
Ambiance in the restaurant was set really nicely. Murals of Bourbon Street were set inside actual windows from New Orleans complete with faux balconies that gave the dining room a very Mardi Gras feel. The group could feel the care that the owners put into the place.
Upon getting ready to leave I'm pretty sure the entire restaurant staff came out to say goodbye. It was the most genuine display of Southern hospitality I've ever experienced. From when we stood up to leave until when we finally left I'd say it was about 30 minutes. They walked us out the door and continued chatting with us on the sidewalk, I really felt like they enjoyed having us there.
The price was fair. Split 6 ways the drinks, appetizers, and food came to ~$50 per person. It was the highlight of the night dining at On the Bayou, I can't wait to go back!
Great cajun food. Especially impressed by their vegetarian options, which are wider and more interesting than you'd expect for such a meat and seafood based cuisine. Traditional options are also good - great flavor on the shrimp and grits and the jambalaya. Service can be slow but it's always friendly and knowledgeable.
Hands down one of the most inviting restaurants that I have attended. It's so beautiful clean and comfortable you don't want to leave The icing on the cake is the food is amazing
There catfish and shrimp are very good. They just need to have some set hours, it seem like the dinning area opens / close whenever .
Had a great time and they were willing to accommodate me and my Frat Brothers even though they were short staffed. Also we were having our annual Founders week dinner and always pick a black owned establishment. They didn't disappoint to bad. My only complaint was the cost of Entree and appetizers, didn't get a bang for my buck. Some of us went somewhere for wings while others like myself are grabbing a late snack. Other than that I will be back to support.
Fantastic place!!! Beautiful wonderful people!!! Splendorously delectable savory foods!!!! Yummy desserts!!! In the most comfy homelike atmosphere and toss in this amazing band and their beautiful music!!! Wow!!! Just GO THERE!!! Go NOW!!! GO!!!
Absolutely delicious food and great drinks! Friendly service - it took some time to get served seemed to be due to short staffing but the owner was very attentive between the event in the back room and the diners in the front.
Definitely coming back.
A must try!
Fun place in a part of Milwaukee we don’t visit often enough. Would highly recommend the okra and go the gumbo a try.
I Truly had a Great Time, the food and entertainment was Wonderful, 1st Sunday Jazz and Buffet I will be back next month 😊👍
We would like to express how much we enjoyed our time visiting your establishment. Some of the children have never had a fine dining experience and most were not familiar with the proper ways to behave. Our time with you was amazing the food was great and the lessons the children learned were something they will take with them throughout life. Thank you for your hospitality and the chance to expose our children to some of the finer things in life. LaTanya Cosey - UGLY
Great experience! The owner was also the waitress, very friendly. The fried chicken was fantastic and the shrimp po boy was big and delicious
Excellent seafood and warm atmosphere. Great for kids. We found a new favorite gem in Milwaukee :)
The food was ok catfish was good but I feel like the food was over priced. But it was all you can eat food could of been a better selection of foods mac and cheese was dried out and the chicken was cooked way to hard. Workers was nice. One worker never changed there gloves while serving people's drinks and picking up dirty plates.
It took a long time to get our food, but it was worth the wait! The food was delicious and a very generous serving!
My wife and I ate here last night(a Friday). We arrived at 6pm, and were seated by little Tony, one of the owners sons. There was only one other table seated, with another couple there. Little Tony was the highlight of the night, as he worked very hard to make sure we were enjoying our food and our time there. He obviously takes great pride in the restaurant.
First, the pluses: Our shrimp and grits were excellently cooked. The dirty rice was good also. The prices are reasonable. The restaurant remodel from Robert Irvine's crew made it feel like being in New Orleans.
The restaurant is very clean, and the tables and chairs were in good shape.
Now, the bad: It took almost 15 minutes to get our drinks, and mine arrived about 5 minutes before my wife's did. It took about 35 minutes to get our dinner. It arrived in two deliveries, also. Now remember, there are only two couples seated in the restaurant during this time. A third couple was seated shortly before we left.
About 5 minutes after we were seated, the gentleman behind the host desk came over and sat down in the table next to us. He spent the next 10-15 minutes complaining to someone who had worked on his car, and had done a bad job, in a loud voice. Both couples could clearly hear the whole conversation. He spoke so loudly we couldn't have a conversation during that time.
Right after he hung up, another employee came through a door carrying a vacuum. Couldn't see where he was vacuuming, but the vacuum was loud enough my wife and I couldn't converse yet again. That went on for about 10 minutes.
While we had high hopes that this restaurant would meet our expectations, it didn't. If our experience is typical for dining there, it's no wonder there were only 3 tables with people at prime time on a Friday night.
I have to be honest, the food was great but the service was just awful. We had a group of five and we met there at 5pm. We sat down and our waitress finally dropped by our table to ask what we would like somewhere around 5:30. We got our drinks about 20 minutes later and our appetizer took about 30 minutes. We finally received our first plate at 6:30 and that was it for about 15 minutes. Our plates trickled in one at a time with 10 to 15 minutes in between each one and unfortunately one member of our party never received their food. Our waitress waited until the other four were all finished eating to speak with our last member about their order but they told her to just forget it and to just take it off of the bill. We received the bill around 8pm and the dish was still on and there was a tip INCLUDED. Now, we'd be a lot more lenient if the place was packed, however, we were the only people in the restaurant. The only reason I'm giving it any more than no star at all was because of the quality of the food that made it to the table. I surely hope if you decide to visit you get better service than we did. We will not be coming back.
Love this fried catfish and shrimp, will most definitely will be going back.
My chicken dinner was very good. The only negative was they didn't have any macaroni. The waitress Marquetta was very nice.
During our visit to Milwaukee, we got the chance to enjoy On the Bayou's cuisine and atmosphere. First off, if you want authentic New Orleans food in Milwaukee, this is certainly the place to go. Not only did we love the food, but the atmosphere was amazing and truly made us feel like we were in the French Quarter. We had the lovely privilege of meeting Chef Greg and Janice, the owners of On the Bayou. They were very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcomed with a true feeling of Southern hospitality. We highly recommend this restaurant!
Food, service, and hospitality were 10/10. Charles was great at making sure we got everything we needed. Catfish and Gumbo had so much flavor and love. Will be going back soon!
I ordered takeout from here and had such a great experience. When I arrived at the restaurant, they were just finishing up putting together my order and asked me to wait by the kitchen window. While I did every single person working in the kitchen greeted me, introduced themselves and told me how much I was going to love the food. The chef also introduced himself, was super friendly, and even made a few recommendations for what I should order next time. The vibe was that everyone was just genuinely happy to be feeding me this delicious food, and it was so awesome.
I ordered the small crab boil with a side of okra and peach cobbler. Everything was insanely delicious. The sauce on the crab boil was to die for, and everything was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The portion was really generous, I didn't count but there were plenty of crab legs, sausage, potatoes and corn to go around. Already can't wait to eat this food again.
When I say delicious! Believe me! This place may look almost like "a hole in the wall", but the ambience and food are amazing Cajun cuisine. Enjoy a live band every 3rd Friday.
Visited on Saturday for the wine tasting and music event and I was impressed. The food was very good and the staff was helpful. I met the owners and they took time to talk and welcome me to their establishment. Overall, we had a great time and will be back. Thanks guys, it was a pleasure.
This was my first time dining at On The Bayou. I'd received mixed reviews before I decided to try them out for myself. The customer service was superior we received a very warm greeting and were immediately seated. There were no other guests dining when we arrived, so we figured we'd be able to get our food fast. The food ended up taking about an hour and a half to be served no exaggerating!!! The waitress was very attentive throughout the waiting period. She made sure our drinks were refilled, which leads me to another con the fountain drinks we're horrible we must have tried 3 or 4 different coke products which were all flat. The sweet tea was okay had to settle on lemonade which was pretty good. The gumbo is what I went for and it was okay could have had more seasoning. The jumbo shrimp and fries we're excellent. The other sides ordered were dirty rice thumbs down and the macaroni and cheese was pretty good. Overall I'll rate them a 3 🌟 for now and I'll give them another try in the future. Maybe in the spring because it was extremely too cold in there no heat in the middle of winter!
Great atmosphere and even better food. I would definitely recommend. Bring the whole family it is definitely a vibe.
This place has a very warm and inviting atmosphere. I happened to stumble upon a karaoke night but the service was great and so was the gumbo. Would definitely come here again
A buddy and I visited On the Bayou for the first time this evening. We'll be back! The restaurant is not in the greatest neighborhood, but what a nice place! The server was warm and friendly, and the chef -- who is from Louisiana -- came out to chat with us. My friend and I both had the gumbo, which was obviously homemade. Lots of chicken and shrimp and veggies over rice in a big bowl, all covered by a rich, brown roux. It was like eating at a friend's house (if the friend was a great cook). A couple of beers to wash it down, and we left very satisfied. Excellent food at a fair price! Cajun/creole options in Milwaukee are very limited. On the Bayou is as good as Maxie's without the hectic crowds.
I really wanted to like this place. Food was excellent we had the gumbo. But the service was uneven at best. No one really seemed to be in charge of the floor. A water divide the tonic with lime and when it came back it had a lemon in it. I said I requested a lime and they said we don't have limes. I can understand not having Ginger beer which I did order, But no limes? Food was great but the music was a little loud for the space.
Visited this place when it was "The Big Easy". Great place as far as decor. Seating not very large but they have an overflow area if needed. They had a Mothers Day Buffet that was excellent. Menu featured shrimp, Prime rib, ham fish etc. Promoted as a brunch most food was represent except eggs. All in all staff was pleasant and professional. Had an enjoyable experience.
The food was Delicious I will be back soon in nice people
We stopped in for lunch today and yes, the food takes a little time but it’s clearly fresh and cooked well and definitely worth the wait. More importantly, it’s truly authentic NOLA food. We split the shrimp po boy, grits and jambalaya. Everything was excellent and seasoned just like I remember from the three years I lived in New Orleans. It’s been hard to find places in Wisconsin that are really authentic and Bayou really impressed me. I’ll definitely be back
Dope experience!!! Extraordinary food and extraordinary customer service!! The owner is super personable and the waitress Dee was EVERYTHING!!!
I love On The Bayou! The food is amazing and service excellent! On The Bayou recently hosted my wedding party for a private dinner July 18th 2019. We were completely impressed with the room layout and ambiance created for us. The food was simply amazing! We got to choose from their extensive menu two meats, four sides, salad and bread for our guest. Our meal was set up in a buffet style which our guest got to eat as much as they wanted until the food was gone. And believe me all the food was gone by the end of the night. The service by the host, cooks and servers was supreme. And the price was amazing. Owners Janice and Greg took a personal interest in ensuring our day was perfect. We choose to use them for our wedding because of our pervious experience with their quality and service; and we were greatly pleased with our experience. We can not thank them enough for the care that went into our wedding dinner. We highly recommend them for any event our occasion❤️🙏🏾
It's clean, loved the jazz music, nice atmosphere. Food was great. I will be back. Ordered the crab rolls. They were excellent. The southern fried chicken was delicious. That chicken sandwich was huge and delicious also. Prices were reasonable. You must try their food.
The food was great! Ordered a seafood sampler and had enough food to feed my husband and I and still have left overs. The food was fresh and made to order.Server/owner was friendly and knowledgeable. I was surprised to see we were the only people dining in. But then realized they are only open fri-mon and the hours for those days are all over the place. Consistent hours would give this place the extra star.considering the food was good, prices were reasonable, and the proximity to downtown is convenient. This place is a gem. Just needs to be uncovered.
Delicious. The Cajun fish is amazing! We ordered both the seafood and chicken/sausage gumbo. Our favorite was the seafood- it comes with crab legs and hearty shrimp. The chicken comes with several whole wings. Definitely go for the peach cobbler, too.
Went for the First Sunday Jazz Buffet. Delicious food and excellent service. Great music, too. Highly recommend.
The food was amazing the catfish and grits was on fire an don't forget about the tarter sauce the best in Milwaukee!!!
The food was excellent! I will be back
Food is soooo good. Low key. It's a vibe👌The live bands and comedy. And that pink drink😂Baebaee don't do it, you gonna be messed up. Prices are ok. For what it's worth. I guess u can say its worth it. But yes, I found me a new spot. Go check it out... It's nice. …
Atomsphere was clean, bright but cold. Food was average okra was above average but bland. Red beans and rice needed salt. Shrimp n grits flavorful but watery. Pricing moderate. Support staff was very welcoming but good took an hour to be served. Support this business just going thru growing pains.
Food is ok. I went for a party recently and the food (jambalaya, bow tie pasta, grilled veggies and more) was pretty under seasoned. The baked chicken was great, however! The backroom for the party was set up nicely and the decor was wonderful! Staff was very attentive and polite. So food=just ok. Service and set up for parties=great!
Our 1st time here. We'll be back again with friends. The food was amazing. Thr portion size was worth the money. Black Owned by a great family. I love it here. Live music and the ambiance is just right. Go support this restaurant!
Had my food delivered through GrubHub. The delivery was a little slow but it was well worth it, the Gumbo was on point! It came with crab legs, jumbo shrimp and all kind of goodness. Look forward to trying their other food.
We saw you on TMJ 4 and ordered the small crab boil, Cajun fries and peach cobbler tonight for dinner. The most AMAZING dinner we have had in a long time. Will definitely be customers for life!
Excellent food, very friendly service, amazing jazz band was playing (No Seat Belts) apparently they perform every other Sunday...I most DIFFINATELY be back!!
We used this place for my grandfather's repast. They didn't make enough food, and the food that they did make didn't taste good. 😔 …
This place made me feel at home I'm from Nola an I heard about this restaurant yes I had to check it out I'm glad I did the food was delicious an them crab claws was on point the staff was nice an the prices was reasonable an the decorations on wall was nice to I'll definitely b back loved it ♥️♥️
When combine excellent food, service and prices, you get On The Bayou!
👍🏿👍🏿
Food was excellent, had to wait very long for the food to come out, my cousin food never came, they ran out of Shrimp from a main entrae they serve. The salad was good, and the customer service was good. Way to long from order to receive your food.
Cajun at it's best. Chef worked in New Orleans for double digit years. Cozy and accommodating. They cater, so you can ask for large pans of things you like for your parties.
The place is awesome, It makes me feel like I’m in the south, great food and even better service. Oh and the drinks are on point also.
My new favorite spot the fish is so good. The staff is awesome. Nice decor I can't wait to go back and they have an all you can eat.
We held a retirement celebration there and the staff was efficient and helpful, the food was delicious, the establishment was up to par and inviting..
They serve a good gumbo and fish dinner, one of my reasons for going.

I came for an event in their meeting room. Well catered. Never ran out of food. Great staff. Looking forward to holding my event here one day
I went there to listen to a live band and it was great music and good food. Thank You! The band that was there on May 1st was really good.
Delicious comfort food. The catfish is amazing ! WARNING: once you've had the food here you will have cravings for more and will have to come back !! Great place.
Good food, reasonably priced items, and the restaurant is way comfortable to be in. Will go again.
Food was AMAZING! Worth the wait, staff is super nice, super accommodating. We will be back. Comfort food, like being home ❤❤
Food was very good . Prices are slightly higher , but i didn’t mind supporting in spite of it . If management tightens up , i could see this place lasting for quite some time . Again food was excellence , service just wasn’t quite up to par in my opinion.
The food was so good yea it took awhile to get but the atmosphere was so relaxing and enjoyable as well it didn't matter and the food was well worth the wait will definitely be back!!!
The grits and shrimps were good the cornbread muffins was a little dry but overall very friendly place to eat
The food is absolutely delicious. No better authentic Cajun food in this entire city. I go out of my way to eat here. Great for business meetings.
