Reviews of Maxie's
Josh O
They have $1 oysters for Happy Hour daily! We got two kinds - Opus and Acadian Pearl. We are not too knowledgeable about the different oysters, but they were both so good and full of flavor. Was tempted to order more, but we’ll come back!
BBQ St. Louis Spare Ribs (half rack)
Hickory smoked, tangy KC-style sauce, Cajun fries, BBQ beans, fresh corn & arugula salad.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken
Bell & Evans chicken, mashed potatoes with chicken gravy, maple-braised collard greens, orange-honey butter biscuit.
Corn bread was delicious too!
Queen LaSho Eds
The atmosphere was nice, the staff was great and the food was mediocre. A couple of items I did not care for were the greens, the gumbo had mini shrimp which I was unlucky to even get one. The cornbread was cold. Shrimp and Grits and pinto beans over rice.
Service was great and pleasant.

This will always be in rotation for us. Closest thing to New Orleans style oysters in town. Great atmosphere and great food. Highly recommend the Tofu “Wings” for my vegetarian friends!

We'd been wanting to get in to Maxie's, so in order to get a reservation with only a day's notice, we decided to take an early dinner (4:15pm).
Upon arriving we were seated immediately. The restaurant had just opened, but the dinner traffic had already started, and by the time we left shortly after 5 the joint was already packed.
We ordered two drinks, a Hurricane and a Maxie's French Kiss. Both were perfect.
Quickly following the drinks was some complimentary cornbread for the table. Sweeter than most cornbread I've had, and very crumbly, but delicious.
Next up were the entrees (we skipped appetizers KNOWING we were having dessert (s).
Andrea Dexter ordered the 4 piece fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes, maple braised collard greens and homemade flakey biscuit. In her words "every portion of this meal was perfect. They have a hot vinegar at the table...make sure you use it on the chicken."
I had the Frogmore Stew, a mix of shrimp, ocean fish, mussels, and chicken chorizo with corn and onion in a light broth with toasted bread. If ANYTHING needed changing, it might be the chicken chorizo, but with that said...I didn't leave any on my plate.
Dessert posed a challenge: what to choose?
We opted not to choose, and instead to order one dessert for the table, and one to go.
First up was the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding. ANOTHER flawless victory for Maxie's. Perfect texture, great taste, not too sweet, and with some salted nuts to balance it all out.
Second Dessert was had hours later, and was the original reason we had chosen Maxie's as a destination. The Peanut Butter Pie comes highly recommended, and we can see why. Most peanut butter dessert, in general, are far too peanut butter forward. This dessert, however, perfectly balances chocolate, a delicate peanut butter cream, salted candied nuts, and a crisp crust to deliver an incredible bite.
Service throughout the evening was flawless, and we could have thrown a dart at the menu and gotten something else that sounded amazing. We look forward to going back very soon, and kick ourselves for not going sooner.
Straight to the top of our favorite spots

I love this restaurant! All the food is amazing! I try new things each time and now half the menu is my favorite. They also have the best Friday Fish Fry in town. Three large delicious pieces of fish with waffle fries, can’t get any better. No need for ketchup, use the tarter sauce for your fries! Don’t forget to go early, great happy hour deals.

I travel a LOT for work and this is the best food I’ve had in a long time. Every item was perfectly cooked, Drink was delicious. the waiter gave every single table speedy and charming service. So so so good
Julia Janocha
Outstanding service and great food! Came here for dinner and ended up sitting at the bar instead of waiting for a table. The drink menu is extensive with plenty of cocktails, wine, and beer options. Ordered the jambalaya which was very good but not what I was expecting. I incorrectly thought it was closer to a stew and not a rice dish. When I explained this to the server he offered to take it back which was unexpected but much appreciated. Tried the gumbo instead, which is a stew, and it was excellent. Great flavors, not too spicy or too mild. Corn bread is light and subtly sweet. Took home the pumpkin mousse dessert, I would go back for that alone! Can't wait to stop by again and try the oysters and shrimp!

I definitely recommend dinning here. I absolutely do not enjoy oysters but the Fried Oysters at Maxie’s are my favorite!!! Great food, cocktails & live music 👍 …

Just wanted to let you know what a great experience we has tonight! I had reservations and was seated immediately. Server was knowledgeable ,prompt and friendly. Started the meal off with oysters that were so delicious. My dinner companion had brisket and I had the pecan crusted trout and a side of grits. The fish was done perfectly and the portions were more than ample! I couldn't even finish and had to get a take away container. Thank you for a memorable evening looking forward to coming back soon

I was seriously impressed. Went for an early dinner on Saturday with my family. Our waiter was awesome and seemed to really enjoy his job which set us up for a fantastic meal.
I had the fried chicken. The breading was phenomenal. It had a touch of honey and was really sweet. As good as it was, after talking to our waiter I’m honestly excited to back and try their Nashville hot chicken next time.
My wife had the BBQ shrimp with mac n cheese side. She really enjoyed both of them, having spent time in New Orleans she had been looking for good seafood and said she finally found.
My son got a burger and actually ate most of it, so it must have been good.
We absolutely will be back and will recommend.

Food was delicious and service was great! Shared pork cheek dinner was fabulous as well as the oysters and BBQ shrimp! Top it off with some Hurricane drinks!! Great time!
Kerry Anderson
Dinner with friend. Our waiter was very awesome. Food was delightful as well. Would definitely recommend a try if your in Milwaukee.
Jay Adams
First time visiting Milwaukee so we were looking for something good to eat. I can say we picked the perfect spot. The food was amazing. Our server was just a little slow with everything. I think he was overwhelmed working multiple tables at one time. Other than that my first experience was great. If im ever back in Milwaukee, I will definitely return. Keep up the great work. Oh also the young lady work the front desk was very polite and she greeted me immediately upon entering the restaurant.
Kathy
It was busy for a Wednesday, but luckily we had reservations. We had a glass of wine at the bar and were soon seated. Our appetizers (2), we had fried green tomatoes with remoulade and oysters on the half shell.(kinds). Both apps were Fantastic! Then for dinner. Tom ordered tender pork cheeks...which used to be my fave...until I had the Pinewood Stew! PHENOMENAL. Great smoky flavor and incredible flavor. Great staff attention as well. Go!! Enjoy!
Christi Koch
Love, live this place. Food is amazing! They have great specials that change weekly. Their gumbo, fried green tomatoes and cornbread are so good. They have great choices for main dishes from shrimp and grits to catfish to a po' boy. They also have some fantastic desserts, like my fave banana coconut chocolate cream pie.
They also have two sister restaurants Blue's Egg and Story Hill BKC that both have a fantastic menu too.

This visit to Maxie’s was our first but it DEFINITELY will not be our last. First, and foremost, I recommend that you make reservations; we did and it was worth it. The food is AMAZINGLY well seasoned, generously portioned, and easily shareable. The customer service was remarkably consistent across the team of servers who serviced our table.
We experienced high quality customer service from the main waiter/server (Clay), to beverage service (Isaiah), to food service (Luke). I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Milwaukee area. Moreover, the food was delicious and the jalapeño margarita was on point!
(Clay is a rock star server and I wish I could clone him or hire him to coach in other venues!)
Holly Parker
Delicious as always! Only thing I would say is once our food was boxed and we were given the check no one came to our table again. We were still talking and would have been nice if our waters were at least refilled. I would have even ordered another drink.
Valerie Dingman
The perfect environment for trying oysters for the first time. They always have two types of oysters. They have a great happy hour drinks and oysters. Food is fenomenal. You get sooo much delicious yummy food on your plates every time. Great dessert options too, it's always changing so you get a chance to try different things. Definitely recommend the jalapeno margarita for sure!
Alexander Brian
Service was prompt however, it was at the bar. The food was good. It’s like a Cajun Kentucky fusion. The brisket was excellent. The bartender was quick efficient and gave good recommendations overall a great spot for a quick bite and a little culture.
Rochelle Petty
Maxie was a very I treating resturant. Definitely a creative menu and not your average type of dishes. It took pieces of New Orleans and put their own twist to it.
I went on $1 Oyster night and happy hour. The oysters were fresh. The service was Awesome. The food was a hit and miss o some dishes. My table was a party of 5 and we picked a bunch of dishes to share. The portions were big but some dishes lacked the taste of the south. Even with that being the case, I would definitely go back again.
The restuarant was clean and everyone had masks on. And they even have dividers up in between each party. We all felt safe.
Ross Tessmer
We went here the other night and I had some of the best ribs of my life! We tried the tofu wings, absolutely delicious. The cocktails were perfect and everything was awesome! Now that we live down the street, expect us to be here a bunch!
Tom Mullen
One of favorites in the Milwaukee and Toss area! Maxie's has the best Cajun creole New Orleans style food! We always enjoy the gumbo, jambalaya and shrimp and grits!
We stopped in for dinner Monday, fabulous $1 oysters until 6pm, happy hour drinks were $1 off. Our table ordered fried green tomatoes and their special wings for an appy, so much mouth watering goodness! For dinner shrimp and grits with Andouille added, living large here for sure! For dessert the coconut banana cream pie was loaded with bananas and chocolate...heavenly!
Amanda Thatiz
Third time here and I have to get fried chicken everytime. The gumbo is also good.I love how they change up the menu here and there. But one thing for sure the fried chicken never leaves.
Callie Bartosh
Was a cute place. The food was good. We ate at the bar as there was a 1 he wait and for some reason they didnt have the outside open on a Friday night. The bartender was very friendly.
patsy gill
My first visit at Maxie's truly exceeded my expectations. Our server was awesome and the food was delicious. The southern cuisine experience and hospitality is a whole vibe.
mike krukowski
We popped in a little late for a snack and a few drinks and to talk real estate. The first bartender was a bit rude and we could tell he just wanted to get out of there and was annoyed that some late night folks like us just meandered in. We have been here before and were a little bit surprised but, the other bartender, who we later learned was the owner's son, really took over and provided exceptional service and recommended some amazing cajun dishes and nice bourbon! We had so much fun with this guy wish I could remember his name!!
Bre Harris
The service was AMAZING from the moment we walked in until the moment we exited. Our waitress Mary was awesome! She didn't miss a beat in making sure our party of 4 was taken care of the entire time we were there. Some of the other waiters even stopped by to pick up plates we were done with in-between Mary helping other tables (teamwork 💪🏾). The food 🤤 OMG it was amazing! Been vegetarian since 2018 and their Cajun options were sooooo good! I had the tofu hot wings and vegetarian jambalaya and tried some of my friends fried green tomatoes.
I would absolutely recommend!
Bruce Lawson
What a great time we had here. We came to celebrate my birthday and I loved it.
Beer. Nice variety. Glad to see that they support local brews. Riverwest Stein and Spotted Cow taps. I think there are 3 or 4 "NOLa" area beers on tap. A couple of other Wisconsin brews as well (I think).
Food. They had a NOLa based menu to celebrate "Lundi Gras" so while I enjoyed my chicken thighs, grits and greens, I don't know if it's on the regular menu.
Service. Kelly rocked the night. Crazy busy in there and she had a great smile and did her job extremely well. That was our first time there and she was super cool and patient with us. Thanks.
Edit. You lose a star. No hush puppies??
Edit two: I take that back. Fantastic corn bread!
Jack L. Moon
Food is amazing and the shortcuts are always delicious! Service can be a bit show, but very friendly. Definitely one of my favorite places to celebrate!
Lawrence Sanders
I like this place. Had the Jumbolya. Excellent. Huge portion. Enough for lunch tomorrow. Not overseasoned but had a nice kick that did not drown out the shrimp sausage or red rice flavors. Roomy establishment with bar. Upstairs and downstairs. I will go back gladly.
Michael Bellante
Found ourselves at Maxie's on Friday (9/25) where we experienced great service from start to finish. Maxie's decor has a cool, southern-fried vibe inside and out. The food was excellent: fresh corn bread and soft butter, fresh oysters on the half shell, Friday Night Fish Fry (in my top 5 fish fries of all time), Frogmore Stew (outstanding). The beer list was small but adequately interesting. Maxie's is one of our favorites and we'll be back again and again.
Rick Quirk
Always a great meal at Maxies, consistent quality, creative choices and helpful staff. Our favorite Milwaukee restaurant. Best collard greens ever!
Lilly Lueck
Two different friends named this place when asked for dinner recommendations, and I was not disappointed. A quick glance at the online menu, and I had to be there.
We came during happy hour and tried oysters for the first time ($1 oysters during happy hour)! They are surprisingly less disgusting than I thought they would be. The staff was helpful and explain how to eat them as we were clueless.
Next came the cornbread and they were NOT stingy with the cornbread. Completely enamored with the food so far, we realized we hadn't even ordered our main course yet!
We ordered the catfish dinner and the BBQ sandwich. The catfish was perfectly cooked with a crunchy cornbreading. The BBQ was tender and flavorful. Absolutely amazing all around.
nick may
Good food, good service, nice interior. Not the fanciest place for a date night but they deliver on the NOLA vibe. Parking can be a little rough.
Stacy K (Wanderingcontessa)
We recently dined at Maxie's with some friends whom we are travelling to New Orleans with in Oct. The guys enjoyed raw oysters in the half shell at the bar. Neither of the guys had ever tried raw oysters and said they were quite good. The decor of the restaurant is very inviting with a country feel. We had chicken fried chicken, crab cakes, ribs and pork cheeks. All of our food was delicious. Service was excellent. We will be back!
Dan Lamas
Great happy hours for southern comfort food and drinks!
Chloe O
I only give 4 stars because it's not quite a complete replica of New Orleans cuisine. However the food itself is very delicious indeed. We had the BBQ shrimp, red beans and rice, brisket and Frogmore stew. The red beans and rice and stew were spot on. The brisket was a little dry without sauce. The BBQ shrimp had great flavor, but was not the traditional served in NOLA. The atmosphere was great for social gatherings, friends and family (maybe not infants and small children). It's not too noisy but close quarters and friendly. Specials and happy hour 4-6pm. Full cocktail menu and some fun NA drinks as well. Great servers and service, fun and knowledgeable.
Cassandra McCormick
Always amazing in all aspects of the dining experience! Incredible, fresh ingredients combined in the most delectable recipes!
Randy Sincoular
Great place for some creative, southern style food. Excellent service and very tasty food. We tried the Maxies Hot Chicken and the Chicken Fried Odekirk Farms Red Deer special. The complimentary corn bread hit the spot.
Christina
Loved this place! So to start you get fresh made, moist, warm cornbread while you wait with butter. The sweet Memphis bbq ribs were amazing. Let me say, they are very generous with the portion sizes so you will not be disappointed. The mac and cheese is super deliciously melt in your mouth cheesy and the breadcrumbs are the icing on top of the awesome cake. The brisket is smoked for 14 hours and it falls apart with no pressure needed. The waitress was very nice and attentive.Absolutely delicious and deserves the ratings and stars given.

My husband and I go to Maxie's for dinner every Valentine's tonight was the 9th year. I love this restaurant the food and the staff are always wonderful.
Jacek Laskowski
Enjoyed entrées (crabcake, oysters, cojun popcorn), corn bread and seafood as the main course. They offer a hot green tea from Rishi! A waiter did a great job introducing us to all the different beverages and later the menu itself. I think he spent a lot of time on it on his own and then was very kind to answer our questions. I think I'd not go there again. Once seems just right.
Steph Rhone
A few of us southerners have been in Milwaukee working and have looked as well as visited quite a few restaurants that were supposed to be southern cooking. I have to say this was the best yet! The food and our waiter were fantastic! Even the sweet tea! Maxie's you nailed it! Thank you!
Justin Crediblegames
Best southern food with excellent service and friendly staff! Jamie was a great server and was extra attentive to our needs, the hickory smoked wings were the best I've ever had and they stash an awesome gumbo! Highly recommend his restaurant!
Laura Martinez
Vegan options available! The tofu "chicken wings" are a must, not only for the vegan community but for everyone out there. They are delicious. They also have amazing drinks like the Jalapeño Tequila. Loved it!
Kon Gruffey
Heard about this place from going to games at Amfam. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, jambalaya, and brisket. The server was really great!!
Thomas Brunhart
I've been to Nawlins on many occasions and live in Milwaukee. It is with great joy that I give this review to this remarkable Cajun Restaurant...Maxies could go head to head with ANY fining dining place in New Orleans!!!
We enjoy sitting at the upstairs bar. It feels very cozy and watching the great bartenders do their thing is really impressive...all the while...as busy as it was, they were cheerful through out the night.
If you enjoy Blackened Catfish...accompanied with cornbread, coleslaw, and honey butter...you will be MORE than happy. The Beef Brisket can be cut with a butter knife.
Get there early because the place fills fast!
Tracy Tooke
The staff was very nice and attentive. they made sure we didn't get low on our water or are mojitos. the waiter also informed us of the daily specials. The meal came out nice and hot
Savannah Salm
My husband and I love Maxie’s! If you enjoy oysters, then I recommend coming during happy hour to take advantage of their oyster deal. I also highly recommend making a reservation (rather than walking in without one). They tends to get pretty busy.
All meals are served with delicious cornbread and butter. If you are considering an appetizer, then I recommend the BBQ shrimp - it will not disappoint. As far as entrees go, the BBQ Tofu Plate is great. The tofu has a smoky flavor and it goes well with the creole.
Sarah Maxwell
Absolutely loved Maxie's. It is admittedly pricey, but definitely worth it. Loved the atmosphere and decor. Great oysters, and my boyfriend and I both really enjoyed our entrees (no leftovers!) Good service, too. We will definitely be going back.
tom awen
Excellent cuisine. I tried the NOLA side of menu with the classic Shrimp & grits. Absolutely delicious. Had crab and corn chowder, grilled oysters as appetizers. Excellent wait staff, great atmosphere and the specialty key lime pie for mardi gras was out of this world! A definite come back for this fine restaurant
Amber Perry
Great vibe. Loved the southern hospitality. Food was Great. We will be back. The place is way bigger than we thought it would be. Great Louisiana decor too.
John Christenson
Went there with another couple. All of us had the Gumbo. It was delicious. Bonus was oyster were $1 each for happy hiur!
Jason Smith
Milwaukee restaurant with a southern spin. Fried catfish was great. 3$ Abita beers make anybody happy!
Shelly Fink
Great atmosphere, nice bar with a big selection. The mixed drink I got was delicious! Food was expensive and quite spicy. They don't have ranch, only some sauce with Tabasco in it. I hear the fried chicken is amazing, but they ran out before they took our order. I will try it again sometime though
Amanda McFarland
Great place! The bartenders were great and the food was delicious. Between the three of us we had the fried catfish po'boy, pork cheeks, and the burger. We also had the cornbread and it all was amazing!
Ben Farrell
This is the only place that I ever want to eat at every time we come back to Wisconsin. The food, drinks, happy hour, service...it is all incredible! Went in last night for my daughter's birthday and had a dozen oysters, fried green tomatoes, chicken wings, corn bread, 2 kid's meals and my wife and I split an entree. Even with us having 4 beers and the kids having 2 bottled sodas, it was only $90! You just can't beat this place for great southern food, without actually going to the south.
Nicole Bailey
Just had the red deer dinner with mashed potatoes and veggies. It was quite fantastic. The good home cooked meal I've been looking for. Key lime pie was to die for, as the pastries always are. I often come for oysters during happy hour since it's such a deal but tonight really showed me that Maxie's does it right.
Angie Harris
Great spot for some New Orleans fare! Daily happy hour from 4-6. House specials are always unique and delicious 😋
GinaG1234
What a fantastic experience!!!! The front door staff - very friendly. Sat upstairs in the corner which was cozy. Spacing was phenomenal - felt very safe. Our waitress upstairs on Friday night was amazing. I had the fish and fries which were delicious. The coleslaw had a different flavor but enjoyable. The portions are huge. Enough to take food home. The cornbread was so fluffy and sweet and just as good the next day. The restaurant is wonderful. Kudos to the manager!!! The only issue I have is that I didn’t order the French kiss drink. It looks and sounds soooooo good! I know what I’m ordering first the next time I go which will be soon. Keep up the superb service!
Shyam Patel
Great atmosphere and wide variety of drinks. Nashville Hot Chicken Nuggets are super Juicy and very tasty. I liked it so much. Service are super fast and staff are very friendly. My team had a great time hope to comeback again very soon.
David Andersen
Food was good. We really enjoyed the happy hour $1.00 oysters on the half shell. They were especially yummy!! Definitely going to have to go back there for happy hour!! We did eat her, I had the jambalaya and Patty had the begun crusted rainbow trout. The trout was delicious but I was a little disappointed with the jambalaya. All in all though good food and nice staff.
Jean-Yves Schneider
Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable with drinks and provided great recommendations for our food. Majority of the food is locally sourced and made fresh in their kitchen. Anything smoked or braised is always a good choice. Awesome happy hour and great daily specials (especially Wednesday for whiskey and wine).
Greta S.
Great service, apologetic that food was taking longer than anticipated. We were in no rush. Food was good. I had the Mac with fried chicken- Mac tasted a little bland, but very cheesy.
Lecia lemberger
French kiss drink(alcohol), fried green tomatoes, Cesar salad and corn bread.
Jose Contreras
The food was delicious. The waitress took her time explaining the menu and she very polite and continued to check on our need.
Steve Fischer
Love stopping here, gives me a taste of New Orleans ! Menu does not change much but it is a fun place to grab a drink and a bite to eat.
Jere Foley
Oyster special at happy hour was the reason I pulled off the highway. The jambalaya blew me away. Others as my table crowed about the pulled pork, the catfish, and the ribs. Get there early if you don’t want to wait, but definitely get there!
Sandi Kirchen
My 1st time at Maxie's! I made a reservation on July 6th for 5 PM on July 20th . Arrived at 4:30, and the hostess said there was no record of my reservation even though I showed her my Gmail confirmation. She did not even apologize, she said it must have been the app's fault. I didn't even use an app to make a reservation, I used maxie's website. She said she could seat us outside but my friend did not want to sit outside. I made my way over to the bar and sat down down. The bartender, Sam, was very friendly. I explained to him what happened and he got the manager . I told the manager that the hostess did a terrible job smoothing the situation over. We ordered food and sat at the bar. They ended up buying us a piece of key lime pie in the end. We left the restaurant at 6 PM and there were about 8 empty tables. I was very off put by the entire situation and not sure that I'll return. The drinks should have been on the house automatically. If the entire restaurant was full, I would have understood but there were way too many empty tables. So my question is, do they ever leave tables for walk- ins on a week night? Super disappointed in my treatment.
Alexandra Alvarez
Wow. This place was incredible. The food was scrumptious, the atmosphere was chill and the service was great. I loved the Southern and Creole vibes and I felt like I was in New Orleans! Definitely recommend.
Bill P
I ate so much it hurt. Maxie's has the best fried green tomatoes in town. This Black Shoe restaurant is only open for dinner, and when they are open, they're quite busy. Reasonably so, this tosa area double decker restaurant serves southern style cuisine that is sure to please.
Emily Anderson
I haven't been here in probably 5+ years. I originally intended to use their catering service for a party because the online set up and ease to order was very simple - but life happens and that couldn't occur. So we went with some friends for a nice dinner with no reservation on a Tuesday and we were lucky to get a seat! Not pictured but delicious: Fried green tomatoes, grilled oysters, catfish poboy, the pork cheeks (!!)
Michelle Pankow
Food was awesome. Spicy margaritas were so good too. The bartender upstairs with the southern accent made dinner even more enjoyable. We always love a great personality that meshes with ours. Overall a great first time experience. Will definitely be back again.
Rodgers Henson
Excellent food,,,the you waiter hostess everyone was so friendly and helpful...plus never complain about the service of food always top notch
Forrest Nation
Food is ALWAYS tasty - service team is pleasant - and the corn bread is a must have when you go...nice this is that’s it’s free! 🎉
They have a small outdoor space so hard to get a table outside when it’s busy. …
Mike Zirbes
A nice dining experience. Happy Hour is nice, drinks could be bigger.
Myha Le
Dinner consisted of amazing cornbread, tasty corn and arugula salad, and then just an average brisket and okay fries. The main course was really a disappointment.
Jennifer Radtke
I love the cozy ambiance. Staff treated us like family. App of peel and eat shrimp (if you don’t like old bay seasoning, you can order without), fluffy cornbread is included with your meal, we had the fish fry and the brisket. Both were so much food we had a more than half to take home. A “side” of Mac n cheese is an entire dinner plate! The best thing was the maple collard greens. Even if you do t eat veggies, this savory side will please anyone. We skipped dessert because we were so extremely full (and I have an egg allergy anyway). Definitely make reservations! Also, carpool if a larger party as parking is limited and mainly on the street.
Carlos Diaz
I wasn’t big on oysters until I tried the grilled ones here. Anyone that comes here should definitely try them.
Kevin
Went for happy hour $1 oysters. They were delicious and I'm not even a big fan of oysters. Drinks were great too. Had ribs as well which were very good. Service was good too! Will definitely be going back.
Mary Darnieder
Special of the night. Jumbo shrimp stuffed with blue crab, New Orleans dirty rice and greens. Delicious, as always.
Foreboding Owl (Zay)
I have been a few times. Like 4 to 6. Everything has been wonderful. I definitely recommend the shrimp and grits with the sausage. Jambalaya is good too. Make a great hurricane also. Will definitely go again.
Dean Gustin
Every time I eat here the food seems to get better, it is to die for , just keep in mind you will need a reservation as they are always hopping, they also have quite the selection of bourbon
Josh Mei
Best southern food in Milwaukee
DD La'rac
Pleasant atmosphere.. Kind & respectful waiters.. Good service.. Good food and clean environment
Brian Leggero
TREMENDOUS! Great food service and atmosphere! Felt like I was back on da bayou! I had the Frogmore stew in picture. No frog in it. Great cornbread and butter.
MD 4258
You know that meal that you didn't know you needed? Maxies last night's pick up order was exactly what the dr ordered. Shrimp & grits, yellow grits, fried catfish po boy.. Everything was sooooo good. Even the tofu wings we ordered (just to try out) were so so good. I'm not a foodie but all of this was the flavor bomb I needed to shake me out of the covid doldrums. Will be back, directly! Yum yum.
Carey Lee
The staff were extremely helpful in explaining the menu and helping with choices. The food was tasty. Definitely going to return.
Tim F
I go there for the shrimp and grits. My wife loves the brisket and Mac n cheese. I've tried other things on the menu and everything has been excellent. They have oysters too. If you want to try them but a little worried, they have an oyster shooter. It's basically a shot of bloody Mary with an oyster in it. Great for a first timer to oysters, and its only one shot so it's over quick if you don't like it. Lol, but I thought it was very good.
Madeline Stadel
Amazing food and recipes, service is slow and forgetful. Nice environment, but it was a very meh experience.
Thays primaveraart
So good, food and attention especial. My cocktail hurricane was wonderful. 100%recomended , ah free parking.
Jing Hong
The Buttermilk fried chicken is super tasty!
Diamond Cole
The wait is long but the food makes up for everything! Nothing like Southern comfort food.
Waffle1295
Great food, I loved the atmosphere of the establishment. I will definitely be coming back!
Lisa Robinzine
My husband and I are from Chicago and wanted some soul/creole food. We had a wonderful experience from the time we arrived until we left. The food was great, our server was amazing. We had fried green tomatoes, oysters, fried catfish., and collard greens. Everything was delicious. Oh the drinks were awesome!
Joanna Humphreys
Great Happy Hours deals. Good family restaurant. Amazing food.
Erric Dillon
Very very place to gather and eat or just you and your partner. Chris is awesome.
Nicholas Averill
Went for the Mardis Gras party which was my first time here. Had some amazing food which included shrimp po’boy, crab dip, “corn dogs” and gumbo. Live music, was provided by Extra Crispy Brass Band, was fun and up beat good drinks for the holiday $5 hurricanes plenty of great beer on tap. Sylvia was our server for the event out in the tent and was amazing and quick for anything we needed. Head chef Jake stopped by to see how we were doing and bought a round of drinks.
Jon Tout
Excellent service and great southern choices on the menu. We had oysters as an appetizer then the vegetarian jambalaya while my wife had the fried chicken. We enjoyed it so much we saved nothing for leftovers and look forward to trying something new from the menu next time.
Patrick and Michelle O'Connor
Fabulous food! We had breakfast it it was so delicious, but what really made our visit exceptional was our waiter, Jovaz. He was so personable, fun and he made a recommendation for us…. Bomb potatoes! So good! Thanks Jovaz for starting our day off right!
Sean Kearney
The meal was amazing. All four of us had the fish fry plus Mac n cheese, red beans and rice, and grits. Server and bartender were attentive.
kathryn gunderson
The service was nice. Everyone was friendly. We had Nashville hot nuggets for an appetizer & I had Jambalaya & my boyfriend had the Creole catfish. Everything was excellent! Highly recommend. Oh and they have complementary corn bread!
Dennis H
Good Southern menu items. Busy place even on week night.
Trevor Jon
Great atmosphere, great whiskey selection, very good food.
Megan “Aloeverra” Waters
My husband and I went for an anniversary dinner. We made a table reservation in the morning for our dinner time. The guests who had our table previously hadn't left yet and the hostess and manager were very apologetic. They had open tables outside that they offered which was perfect. The place was incredibly busy but every person working was kind and professional despite the pressure they were under.
The server really sold the specials they had that day and they were so delicious. We also did the flatbread appetizer and I got a mojito. Everything was fresh. The service took awhile but it was well worth it and totally understandable.
John Grech
Favorite place for New Orleans/southern comfort food. Great staff as well. The ribs are amazing and thee oysters are fresh.
Matt Bramm
Amazing food. One of my favorite southern cuisine locations in the Milwaukee area.
The Nashville chicken nuggets appetizer is my favorite and almost enough for a meal by itself.
The BBQ brisket was delicious and the 4pc Buttermilk Chicken meal is enough for two people. Very tasty and the right touch of a country meal.
Can't wait to go again 😁
Brad Gray
Ordered curbside pickup everything was in the bag. The food tasted fresh and delicious.
Kristine Kohnert-Rosalez
Great food. Love the ambiance. Servers are spot on and knowledgeable about the menu. The Louisiana style food was spot on. We will be back
Sarah Sterling
Superb service and excellent food as always. Maxie's never disappoints! Was pleased to learn they are now carrying Death's Door vodka and gin!
Kyle McHugh
Place has a great ambience and awesome people. They were A bit slow at the bar with service and it wasn't busy. Unfortunately when we were having the oysters we did have a worm in one. We were quite grossed out at that point. They did comp us which was nice but I have to say that was a massive turn off.
kittie
the food was great and tasted authentic. the handsome bartender made a delicious tequila sunrise. my waitress was clearly having a tough night but she didn't show it at all and tried really hard to ensure we had a good night, even heating our cornbread.
the only thing I didn't like was my date 😅
I'll definitely telling people and coming back.
Brian Pritzl
Been here twice and will definitely be back. The southern cuisine is authentic and excellent. Great wine selection and an oyster bar (if you are into that). Service always great.
Matt Hud
Great food and dessert.
Diane Larsen
Was there business meeting good food my favorite ribs and macaroni and cheese...need reservations place always crowded....no elevator to get upstairs....great desserts...
Richard Kober
This spot is hands down my favorite place in Milwaukee. Period. Amazing happy hour specials, top class service, amazing oysters, appetizers and dinners. I have yet to find anything I don't like about this place. This has become my goto for every Wednesday happy hour and I'm considering stopping in on Mondays as well.
The bartenders are amazing - great recommendations in addition to attentive service.
1/2 price bottles of wine on Wednesdays is an unbeatable special, especially when combined with dollar oysters during happy hour.
The grilled oysters are absurd. So good they should be illegal.
It can get pretty busy so get in early or you may have to wait for a table. It's worth it either way.
Cameron N
What a cute place with delicious food! I loved the pecan-crusted trout, the fried green tomatoes, and the cornbread. Definitely will be back to try more on the menu!
Neil Panosian
This place has excellent food and our server, Nicole, could not have been better. That being said, after being open for only 1 hour they had already run out of fried chicken and the dessert we wanted. A little pricey, but you do get unique and tasty food
Jessie Still
It was the first time me and my husband had been out to dinner in over a year. Not only did they redo the dining room to make it Covid safe, but they also managed to make it look part of the decor, very secluded but also inviting. Our server Ben, was most attentive and the meal and drinks were amazing. All in all, it was a perfect night out.
Elise Hallock
Went for an early dinner and had grilled and raw oysters and fried green tomatoes in the patio area. Staff was great, the place was very busy, the food was excellent. Would definitely repeated. Especially those grilled oysters.
Samuel Hartman
Came for a monday-gras dinner, the building was nice, the food was great, and the service was excellent. Live music was playing southern music. All around a top notch experience!
Ian Addison
Run by Black Shoe Hospitality so you already know it's good. Don't even need to talk about the food, I'm sure it's all good. Upstairs is cool, very well segmented so you have some personal space. I recommend the oyster shot ;)
Marion Sodnik
The service was excellent. Cocktails were terrific! Salmon and beef dish was excellent! Fried chicken tasted good, but a little cold. I'm sure if we mentioned it it would have been addressed. Meals are great at all three restaurants in this group.; Story Hill, Blues Egg, etc. Haven't been to Shorewood yet, it will be on the list!
Keeliram
Maxie's Fish Fry was delicious, more than enough for dinner. It was a busy Friday evening but a spot opened up at the bar before our table did. Bartenders were awesome and checked back often enough without hovering. Great staff.
Phil Ridarelli
Fresh oysters were phenomenal. They grate fresh horseradish for the cocktail sauce. Grilled oysters, not so much. Greasy, served with soft white bread. Staff was kinda surly, but I suppose that’s kinda the charm. Entrees were average. Nice atmosphere. (I shoulda got the fried chicken. I hear it’s great.)
Tracey Norman
The food was amazing the staff was friendly and the over all experience was great. We were also with amazing friends. We will come back
Felecia Lemberger
Drink french kiss, fried green tomatoes, corn bread and Cesar salad
Janice Lynch
Very nice place! The service was TOP NOTCH, the room was spacious and comfortable! The food came out fast and piping hot! I think everything was super fresh and everyone in our party walked away with a full belly. I am kind of particular about my BBQ, and I was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, but everyone else loved it, so if you have a chance - definitely visit this place!
Nae _ Say
I had a great experience at Maxies. The food was great and served in large portions. The waitress was nice and we were seated quickly. I tried a little bit of everything. From oysters, corn bread, crab crown chowder, Mac and cheese, greens, red beans and rice, crab cakes, French fries, and the hurricane to wash it all down. And overall very good and authentic tasting! The food is flavored well and soulful.
Austin LeMaster
Highly recommend it. Really nice place with a cozy environment and cool decorations. The staff was great and had good drink recommendations. The food was fantastic. Their west coast breaded oysters were delicious and the baby back ribs were great. Everyone in my group really liked the macaroni side as well.
Patti Orzel
We ate at the bar. The bartender was super nice and attentive. My significant other and I like to share an entree. Good thing because the portion size of our St. Louis ribs was huge, but delicious. The bar tender divided the portion for us. We will definitely be back!
Christopher Ramos
I gave it 3-stars for a few reasons. First service seemed rushed and forced. I made it a point to ask if it was a busy night and our waiter said it was actually a slow period. So asking for items such as napkins for two people and a few other items came scarcely or not at all the first round. Two people should get more than three napkins. Our order was wrong. Order the four piece chicken and I received two chicken breasts my guest received two thighs. The cook put the wrong piece on our plates and our waiter didn't catch it as well.
Food quality: I had four piece chicken mashed potatoes with gravy cornbread and greens. The seasoning was not there. Very bland chicken, gravy was a blend of sage and poultry seasoning. Very thick and very dark. The tastes and flavors did not mess well. Wasn't a great experience and definitely not southern style cuisine. First and last trip.
Chris Olson
Chanterelle mushroom flatbread with peach BBQ sauce & oysters. Outstanding food and service!!
Kirstin McMillen
The food was decent, but the service was a notch lower than how the food is priced. Food and drink were spilled as they were delivered to the table and never cleaned up, the server was unable to answer questions about the wine list (which had some errors on it), champagne was served in wine glasses...just little things that aren't a huge deal but add up. Overall the food was good and the service friendly but a little *too* understated for the price point.
Cullen Grover
Maxie's was an incredibly solid experience. Despite arriving early (4:45) on Sunday, we had a 30 minute wait. We were able to grab some happy hour deals on drinks and oysters at the bar to make the wait pass quickly. The menu marks vegetarian and vegan dishes, but our our server was also able to walk us through a variety of gluten-free options for my wife. Our server was attentive and we received our food quickly. Overall, we were very happy with our dinner.
Eric Paddock
Love this place! Have been here 3 times and tried a number of things on the menu. The corn bread is delicious, as is the trout. Just recently I went for my girlfriend's birthday dinner. I had the crab cakes, which are perfect - crispy on the outside and moist and flavorful on the inside. The mac and cheese and coleslaw are amazing too. My girlfriend's mom had a skate fish pasta dish and her dad had the baby back ribs -everything was outstanding. Service is great! Highly recommend!
Timothy Vertz
I was very disappointed with the jambalaya. Very watery and lacked any depth of flavor other than some heat from peppers. Big portion so I took half home put a little butter and flour in a pan added a little stock and bam delicious. Wait staff was wonderful. Cocktail delicious and no skimping on the alcohol. I'm going back to try something else it's a nice place.
Tim Anderson
Omg amazing. Such a great meal and so many bourbon choices. I had the fried chicken meal and the chicken was succulent, the greens were the best I ever had. Friend had the vegan jambalaya and it was amazing. Fresh shocked oysters were delicious. Was not disappointed by anything. Service was terrific.
Carlea Jussila
Hands down one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. The drinks are great, cornbread is delicious, you HAVE to get the corn and crab chowder if you go, hot chicken is amazing and the brisket is delicious also. The brisket does come with sauce already on which my husband didn’t love (he likes to sauce it himself) but it was still delicious. 10/10 recommend. Oh also their bread pudding is to die for. Eat it there instead of taking it home, it’s best fresh!
Kristin Ziegler
Always great oysters, shrimp, wings, drinks, cornbread, Mac n cheese, ribs, fish fry, bartenders, GREAT EVERYTHING
E
Great spot to hit up before a Brewers game.
anisha dsilva
Oysters, oysters and gumbo! Delicious southern fare with an efficient staff.
Andres Osuna
Oysters 1 dll each every day, 4 pm to 6 pm!
Kathie G
I love Maxies, and have ordered take out from them since this pandemic started. It's been good other than now. I ordered the beef brisket for 2 for $36 and it was very disappointing. The quantity was definitely not for two and the quality was not great either. Several pieces were all fat. Overall we received a small plate of brisket enough for 1 of us. I'll still patronize but the brisket will never be ordered again. The visit before was the fish fry which was good except the godawful fries. Cold, hard and unseasoned. I'd rather eat the fatty brisket than those fries.
James Henkel
This was an excellent dinner! The service was excellent, and the blackened catfish was superb, especially paired with collared greens, cornbread and apple butter. I even liked the fried tomatoes as an appetizer. The mojitos were authentic and excellent. The only problem is that I lived this long in Milwaukee before experiencing Maxie's!
Travis Urban
Decent BBQ and other foods at a high price point. I had a half rack of St Louis style ribs with the beans, collard greens and corn/arugula salad for sides (Review of these below). I will likely be back at some point but it won’t be rushed. There are much better options at more reasonable prices here in MKE.
The ribs had good flavor but were not very meaty for the cut. They didn’t even char the sauce on the grill at all from what I could tell...but how could I with the obnoxious amount of sauce they pool on top of the uncut ribs. The Memphis sauce was good and packed a little bit of a punch.
The maple greens were fantastic and probably my favorite part of the meal.
The beans were quite tasty but lacked texture considering the fact that other ingredients were present - Either they had been held too long or they were overcooked from what I could tell. They would have been perfect if the supplemental ingredients were recognizable from a texture standpoint.
The corn and arugula salad was good and seemed to hit all marks I could imagine them going for but I wouldn’t get it again because of my own preferences.
The cornbread that was given to share before the meal had good flavor but was quite dry. I think offering some maple syrup or honey in addition to the butter would be a nice touch.
Overall, I enjoyed my meal but the price was far too high considering the quality of the food.
Jessica m
The black shoe hospitality restaurants are always wonderful! I always enjoy maxies. But my experience tonight is worth mentioning. My friend, and i went in for a couple drinks and Andrea was such a wonderful bartender! She was so nice, personable, and, attentive. She explained every drink for us, let us smell certain bitters and went above and beyond to modify, and make sure we loved our cocktails. We had a great time, and really enjoyed interacting with her.
J YZ
Having heard great things, I had high expectations. Overall, I left a bit disappointed.
Staff was friendly. Prices were about what I expected. Place was cozy - a bit loud for my taste.
The beef brisket I had tasted pretty darn good. But my grumble is the portions. My meal arrived on a larger oval plate and was 80% covered with french fries (which were very bland). I think perhaps this style of food is largely about sides and fillers (fries, corn, rice, etc) so maybe it's not unusual.. But for me, it just didn't feel well balanced. Had I not forced down the fries (after applying liberal amounts of condiments) I certainly would have been left still hungry after the $24+ plate.
Overall, I don't think I'd go back any time soon.
Jeff Renaud
One of my favorite spots for a date night or a nice dinner. Maxie's has great options for everyone and always have interesting specials. The BBQ shrimp appetizer is unbelievable
Latrice Renée
Very Nice atmosphere. The food was just OK for me. I ordered the Catfish Po-Boy and I've had better. The Collards were pretty good and the Grits were just OK also. I guess my expectations were a little high and I felt slightly disappointed. On a positive note the staff and patrons were very nice and sociable. I went with a co-worker after work and it was a nice spot to relax and mingle.
J Shoots
I have been here about a dozen times now. I have never had a bad experience. The one time my food order was messed up at our table they remedied and then some. The happy hour of eat and peel shrimp and oysters is one of the best happy hour deals in the city as far as food goes. They also have a good bourbon selection at semi reasonable prices. The menu consists of higher end comfort food with daily specials that fortunately sometime make it to the main menu and for good reason. Every server and bartender is as knowledgeable as any fine dining restaurant about the food. My recommendation is come in for fried chicken night and get it Nashville hot style.
Josie Simonson
Food and service are always amazing. They also now have measures in place to make you feel comfortable going out during a pandemic as well too.
Can't beat their fresh oysters ($1 during happy hour! 🤯)
ROB EVANS
Food was good server was great.
Chef I don't know about, ordered lightly blacken why did I get it burnt
Sent it back and got it back the same way. So the Chef stopped them from getting 5*****. Still I will be back🤗
TeaParty Madness
Went here for Valentine's day dinner. Had a table right away. I ordered the crab smothered sole which was one of the specials. The flavor from the seafood was decent & cooked well but overall a bit bland. Disappointed in the sauce and especially the spinach. Guess I expected to be more impressed for the price. My boyfriend ordered the pork cheeks and felt similar. Food was good enough but not worth the money we spent. Also, our waiter was helpful when he was there but felt like we spent a lot of time waiting for him when it wasn't that crowded.
vanessa mixson
Loved it! Food was great and the cute waiter made me feel special as I am sure he did for all the customers but I could have sworn all that attention I was getting was solely experience by moi. Keep up the good work cute guy waiter. I will definitely be coming back and looking for the same or better experience. Get ready to turn flips cute guy waiter. Tall (well to me sitting down), Dark hair and the cutest smile.

We came here for my friend’s birthday — she was aware that’s what we were celebrating 😉
Our server, Christian, was very friendly and thorough when reviewing the menu with us. We were promptly served with their delicious and fluffy cornbread (with orange lemon butter 👌).
We placed our orders and chatted away. There were some changes made to my friend’s order that wasn’t done but it was correctly immediate.
For birthdays, they serve red velvet cake (which happened to be her fave kind of cake also).
The food was amazing and the service was quick and friendly. Definitely has that Louisiana flare Milwaukee needs. Highly recommend!
Emily Wirth
Ordered take out fish fry and it's easily the BEST I've ever had! Chicken Po'boy was also fresh on great bread and my husband is still talking about the beans + rice.
Customer service was amazing, curb side pick up was smooth and we're already planning our next meal!
P Thomas
Generous portions, nice atmosphere, good service, prices are fine considering portion size. I love that quality fresh food is purchased locally. My burger was cooked just right when most restaurants overcook. I have been to Maxie's several times spread over some years; my only issue is that with the palate of a southern girl, I found some of the food to be very under seasoned for southern cuisine. Even the burger which was otherwise perfect was somewhat bland for my taste.
roswellian
I'm in love with the gorgeous decor and warmth in this place! The service was great. My usual cocktail has ginger beer which they were out of so I ordered a specialty drink off the menu (which was delicious). Once the food had arrived, my server let me know that they ran out to grab some ginger beer if I wanted to order my usual later (which of course I did). The complimentary cornbread was a nice touch. My salmon special was delicious and generous and the plate of jambalaya for my date was massive! It was my first time here, but I'll be back!

Fun place to stop by on a quick trip to Milwaukee. We were looking for a BBQ place, and Maxie's does that, but also is into Cajun cuisine. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and recommended the corn salad and the mac and cheese, and both were tasty. We went in between lunch and dinner time, so it was fairly quite, but it look like the place can get pretty packed. The food came in a timely fashion, and definitely satisfied our craving. We had the peel n eat ship, which come cold (surprise to me); and they were good, but expensive for the quantity we got. The other dish we ordered was the ribs, and those were cooked well and tasted great. They also came with a side of beans, which were very flavorful.
Ron
Great cajun food! love coming here for something different. All 4 dinners were excellent! Shrimp and grits yummy flavor, catfish, gumbo, Frog stew, all fish no frog😉. fried green tomatoes and Bloody Marys for appetizer. plus wings with special BBQ rub and breading, different then all the same and tasty! …
Alyssa L
A little pricier than your average Tosa restaurant but well worth it! The service is amazing and the food is consistently good! My boyfriend and I like to walk there and have a few too many Kentucky Bourbon barrel ales. The corn bread they serve before your meal really helps soak everything in. 😉😅 …
Matt Locher
The food here is so good. Cool atmosphere too. But we just keep coming back for the food.
Holly Snyder
What an awesome eatery! Came here yesterday for a birthday dinner and the whole group couldn't stop talking about the great staff, atmosphere and food! Good portions, too- we were served so quickly and efficiently! We had a blast and will definitely be back. :)
Lindsay Ann H
One of my favorite Milwaukee restaurants. Great happy hour and on Sundays kids meals are $2. Pair that with $1 oysters from 4-6 and drink specials it makes it an affordable night out for great great food. Never know what to order because everything is so great and the specials are great too.
Jeanette
Once you can get a seat (they generally have a wait list), the service is good as is the food. I had the shrimp and grits, they were delicious and the wait time for getting the food after the order was placed was only like 5 minutes. I also had a mojito, it wasn't to my liking at all.
Eric Smith
If your reading reviews of this place just go. It's a bit pricey but worth it. Fresh oysters, a huge whiskey selection, the cornbread is superb. That's about as far into the menu as I got. Though the bbq smells outstanding. Im going back in a week to try some.
John Rusch
The food is really good, and there are some really great daily specials. The ribs and mac & cheese are very well prepared and delicious, and I loved every bite. Service was a tad slow, but I was there for a laid back evening so I didn't mind.
Mike Gavin
Crab and corn chowder is pretty good. Also had the shrimp and grits with sausage. Nice sized portions.
Sara Smiley-Robbins
Delicious food. Exactly what it promised to be. Great service! The server took my allergies into consideration and suggested adjustments and separated items to accommodate me. The brisket was tender and perfect. The cocktails were on point. Pork cheeks are a must for everyone to try!
Paul Ludwikowski
I don't give 5 star reviews because I don't believe there is a perfect restaurant. That being said, I cannot recommend Maxie's more highly. All the items I have tried have been great. $1 raw oysters during happy hour, an extensive bourbon and rye menu, and a menu that is not really missing any of the classic Southern dishes. I have never had anything to complain about food wise, the prices are not cheap, but definitely in line with what you would pay for similar dishes at other restaurants. As a bourbon affiaciando I think the drinks could be a couple of dollars cheaper.
Sarah Leipold
Amazing. Everytime. It's a bit pricier than your average Milwaukee dinner spot, but the portions are huge and the food is well worth the price. Most dinners come with two sides and ALL of the sides are delicious. Favorite Milwaukee restaurant, hands down. Last time I went, I made reservations for 19 for a surprise anniversary shindig and the staff was so accommodating.
Candace Carter
It was good and I'd go back to try a different dish. I got the BBQ tofu which was just a seasoned block of tofu (I thought it would be something else and should have asked) but it was still flavorful. I loved the veggies and mashed potatoes that came with it and the lemonade was good.
Scott Davis
Excited to try Maxie's after hearing such good things. Three words: believe the hype. Started with crab cake appetizer. So good I ordered the meal. My wife had the seafood stew- very flavorful, a lot of seafood! Our guest had the braised pork cheeks. Simply wonderful. Great cornbread- light and sweet with a delicious whipped butter. Strong beer list, plus whiskeys or maybe bourbon. Sorry, beer is my speed. Finished with key lime pie, and a cup of Valentine's coffee. We will be back - want to try the fried chicken.
Rage Thomas
Dollar oysters every night... What is better?
Jenny Oliva
Excellent food. Great service. Nice atmosphere.
Dan Rehbein
Been here twice this year (once was on fat Tuesday). That day was crazy busy, but we got a table in about 45 min. and the food was great. Both times the meal was awesome and the service awesome too.
Maybe there are better southern/Cajun places to eat, but certainly not here in Milwaukee. We really enjoy Maxie's.
Dan McFarland
I have been here 4 times over the past 2 years and havent had any bad thoughts. Food is good, staff is always friendly. My only lack of a 5th star is the price versus portion size. However id you get there for happy hour 4 to 6pm oysters are a $1 each. So that helps. I have still never spent less than $40 for a meal and that doesn't include any alcohol.
zak z-kow
Wonderful food and wonderful service. Everytime I've gone here the bartenders and servers are always extremely polite. The oysters on the half shell are so fresh and different everyday. They have 3 different kinds every day and they are great, I cannot recommend these enough. Maxis is a great place to go and eat out. They have $1 oysters from 4 to 6. They open at 4.
Abigail B
Wonderful place! Actually divine food and drinks, a fantastic waiter (Mike) and beautiful atmosphere. The prices are a bit higher but I guarantee it is actually worth it. Great food and explanation of techniques or history of the methods of preparation. Awesome. 10/10 will visit again and again
Jeffrey Lemmermann
Unique dishes and old favorites make up their menu. Their chicken Tuesday special is phenomenal in flavor and price...enough to share (but tasty enough not to.) Daily soup selection is excellent and if you are into oysters, they have a fine selection. Unique decor and a great staff round out the experience perfectly.
Sharon J. Gray
I've posted before about how there are restaurants that have risen to the challenge of making their food manage to taste amazing even after the 20-30 minute commute to bring it home. Maxie's is one of those places. Everything we ordered was fresh, and still the appropriate temperature by the time we got home. Glad to eat here before the COVID-19 weirdness, still glad to eat there, and will continue to do so once we are lucky enough to be able to dine in once again!
Nicole Krakow
Fantastic attentive service and delicious food!
Brittnie Peck
Food was phenomenal and plentiful. We had the Cajun popcorn (fried crawfish), it was mouthwateringly good and fresh tasting. Split the fried chicken and had an order of mac n cheese and collard greens (spectacular). Took home enough food for an entire other meal for two. Corn bread With honey butter is a real treat. Nothing about this meal was disappointing. Server was also super nice and helpful. Authentic Southern food and Southern sized portions. 10/10 would recommend and can't wait do visit again.
Daniel Hill
I truly enjoyed it. I'm from Cleveland OH and I wish I could get back there again. I forget the female bartenders name but, she was outstanding!! The prices were fair the atmosphere was wonderful.. I just wish it was an little bigger. S lit if people left because it had a 2 hour wait. But God bless 🙏. And thank you for s pleasant evening .
Patti Stolpa
Friendly staff. Good quality food. Baked oysters were delicious. Seafood was fresh.
Expect bar pricing to be high.
$5 For bottle of High Life up to $10 for others. Soda was flat in my Captain + coke.
Ann Rawlinson
One of my favorites in MKE. The food is delicious, the service is top notch. Great Bourbon collection, the wine list is pretty decent too. Maxie's does get crowded...so get there early for a super happy hour! Kid friendly too!
Elizabeth Gallagher
Was great! My dress matched the upstairs carpeting, to which other customers noticed. All great things take time- so be prepared to wait and don't complain because we are all hungry. The food is the bomb. The parking is difficult, but nothing that can't be figured out.

If you want exceptional food delivering a southerly and new Orleans flavor. This!!! is place to satisfy your taste buds to a voyage of happiness.
That goes right down to the sweet treats following your meal.
Compliment your order w one of many well composed drinks, allowing for a wonderful date night, special occasion Or just a nice evening for a change.
You'll be pleased by the bars mixology skills. Promise you that.
I've eaten here more than a few occasios and they've never dissatisfied my relationship w Cajun Cuisine.
From the portion to the plating they don't skimp on making your night one to remember.
That's what a restaurant should do ( a seated experience of tastes and generous service and a chance to meet new faces.)
Keep an open mind and never try to order the same item twice. You'll be glad you tried something new.
This is a great place for adventurous foodies.
You'll be happy to have savored all their delicious options offered.
Susan Conley
Food was exceptional in quality, taste and presentation. You won't be disappointed! Sat at the bar, there are plexiglass dividers every two chairs and staff all wore masks for those concerned about proximity to others.
Colleen O'Malley-Campbell
Love the staff, atmosphere and food!! Fried green tomatoes are amazing as is the cornbread, shrimp &grits, key lime pie... Happy hour has good specials. Expect a crowd!
Richard G.
Jambalaya was a little watery and sausage very plain. Shrimp had tails on with some shell in Jambalaya. Chicken was great and service was very good. Not bad, but not wowed for first time.
Rebecca Vinz
Not only was the food delicious, but what was most impressive was the service. Having been in the service industry myself for a decade plus, these are the things that impress me. I wish I remembered the servers name, but he was truly amazing, as was all of the staff that catered to us. Thank you so much for a fantastic dinner.
Ted Labby
Great food and a great atmosphere. Our server described menu items with great adjectives, as well as being very knowledgable about cooking herself. Talking about everything from rendering fats for gravy, to pickled greens to add a bit of acidity to the plate. I got a special that wasn't on the menu, Hot Chicken. Wonderfully breaded and fried, then rolled in a cayenne oil, topped with pickled greens, and some fries on the side. Complimentary cornbread as well. It's a popular spot. Even on a Wednesday night, it was packed within an hour of opening. So reservations, or showing up before the doors open, is a great idea.
Louis Victor
I would have to say my food was amazing, I ordered the four piece chicken combo that came with mashed potatoes and turkey fried greens. The chicken was nice and succulent but a little fresh from my taste, the fried turkey greens were beyond amazing a little sweet but it goes perfect with the flavor, the mashed potatoes with chicken gravy are to die for. But I’m giving them three stars because of my wife’s food. Which would have to be subpar at best, my wife ordered the pork riblets with the NC pulled pork combo. First the pulled pork was amazing but the rest of the meal was beyond horrible, the ribs were overcooked and burnt(sauce was great). Now let’s start with the worst fries ever on planet earth, a red beans and rice that complement the fries. I was so disappointed seeing that we have been wanting to try the place for sometime now. But we will be going back, IM IN LOVE WITH THE GREENS.
David Mattern
Oh yes, what a find! 5 stars damn good! We had the buttermilk fried chicken 🍗 and the Frogmore Stew!👌 Both outstanding!✅ Like southern food in Wisconsin? You must visit! …
Mike Spanjar
We attended "Derby Day," celebrating the Kentucky Derby. Maxie's put together a special menu for the occasion. Selections mostly contained shellfish and pork, neither of which my wife and I eat. Leat you wonder why we went, it was selected by friends who joined us and none of us knew about the special menu. In fact, my wife checked out the menu online and it was the regular menu. Nevertheless, I am not basing my review on any of this as it wouldn't be fair. My wife and I ordered beef po' boys. The sandwiches contained stewed meat and a heap of onion strings. It was so oily, I had to stop after half. I felt my heart would stop if I had another bite. My wife didn't finish either. Friends had oysters and loved them. We shared a slice of key lime pie, which was amazing.
Amit Nayak
We went to the restaurant in the evening after a great time with bowling. I was using google map and found bit difficulty in locating the building and finding a proper parking place. After couple of turns in that area i was able to figure out the restaurant. Could not find any dedicated parking and had to park on the street like several others.
We went inside the restaurant and the ambiance was really great. We were greeted by the crew members and they guided us to our table of 6 people since it was pre-booked.
The food had great taste and have wide options for people with sea-food and nonveg. They have very limited Vegan options. I tried tofu and it was good. The quantity served in 1 plate is good for 2 people.

Good lord is this a good restaurant. I live in the American South, so I was skeptical that a restaurant in the greater Milwaukee metropolitan area could pull off quality southern comfort food and/or Cajun fare. My skepticism was met by a friendly staff, an incredibly diverse & deep whiskey selection and some of the best food I've ever eaten. Sometimes I keep quiet about restaurants like this since I don't want to contribute to crowding, but I live 1,000 miles away, so I can crow about it all I want. So, if you're ever in Wisconsin, go here and eat all of the food. All of it.
Pam
The fresh oysters were great!! I went to Maxie's with my friend from Long Island who knows fresh seafood. He was impressed by the freshness of the oysters and the peel-n-eat shrimp. We also had the blackened catfish and the frogmore stew and they were both fabulous. The atmosphere was relaxed even though it was crowded. Our server, Sylvia was so friendly and helpful. We had such a great experience that we went back a few days later. While they didn't have the peel-n-eat shrimp because the plane didn't come in on time, we had the jambalaya and the barbeque beef brisket with a side of mac-n- cheese to share. Everything was very good and Carter did a good job even though they were packed on a Monday night. We will definitely go back to Maxie's!!

Food is great.... staff delightful... atmosphere relaxing
Raquel Bialek
The food is good, the wait, service, and atmosphere are lacking. We have now been there twice. The first time they wouldn't seat us until the whole party was there. Then when we did get seated it took about 10-15 min just for drinks. The wait for the food was at least 45 min. We maybe saw our waitress at total of 4 times the whole time we were there, and considering it was a good 2 hours of us being there that is a joke. The food was good but overpriced. We tried again on Friday, calling 30min ahead to get a table, for 4. We got there and they said it would be another 30 min! We stayed for about 5 and left.
Ted Chisholm
Delicious. Wait time was a bit long and there should be more waiting space by the door. But this minor issue was overshadowed by outstanding food and great meal service. The shrimp were fantastic and the catfish entree was absolutely superb.
Peggi Ann
Collard Greens, grits and fried tomatoes. Fabulous felt like a good old fashioned Southern kitchen. The peach cobbler is a must. Best ever.
Cassandra Linklater
This place was amazing! Excellent service. Food was delicious. Pricing very reasonable. Portions generous. We ate every bite and left happy.
Sarah Busch
They made my boyfriend's birthday very special. We declined dessert because we were stuffed so they packed up a piece of cake for him after he blew out a candle! We had great service and the food was tender, juicy, and flavorful!
Kevin Smith
Came here for dinner on Sunday and sat at the bar. I had 12 Welfleets to start and a Kentucky Sidecar. The oysters were perfect and delicious, and the cocktail was well made. Jambalaya for an entree, it was perfectly spicy and plenty of shrimp, chicken and sausage. I am a big guy who likes to eat, and the portion was too big for even me. Friendly servers and excellent service.

My mixed love affair with Maxie's keeps me from giving them 5 stars. But there's a lot to love.
Pros: lovely, relaxed and quirky atmosphere. The upstairs dining room is really neat with the doors hanging. Consistent menu with fresh and new ideas offered all the time.
Cons: Can be BUSY, and the bar is quite small with no where else to accommodate waiting guests. I've had the occasional "miss" with some of their dishes, but it's to be expected with a place like this.
All in all, GREAT date spot for a cozy conversation and upscale southern comfort food.
Cynthia Jackson
Everything was good about the place even the greeters at the front door and the food was good and they made sure that everything was wonderful for you even when I couldn't finish all my food and they gave me a to go containers and topped off some food.
Shelby Stielow
A week ago was my first time being here,it was a treat for my birthday.
Service was A+, waiter was very sweet and communicative to my 2 boys, gave helpful suggestions to my fiance and I, and the food was all very tasty and "comfort foody", which is EXACTLY what I love. Really want to go back already and try more off the menu!
James
So good! This restaurant group really knows what they're doing. I grew up around the corner and remember when that building was a convenience store, an Irish deli and then nothing. What a beautiful addition to the neighborhood. It's nice to see this historic space repurposed into something truly unique. Our server was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and oysters ($1 dollar oysters happy hour?!). I feel like I've gotten so desensitized by the terrible, rude service in NY that I was taken aback by someone who actually seemed to want to be there. The food was incredible, southern done right- portion wise as well as flavor. We ordered 18 oysters, 2 cocktails, two entrees and dessert all gor $74. Unreal.
Jessica Kuhl
The food is always delicious! But what happened to your service? The last three times I've been here it's gotten significantly worse. Last night it wasn't even busy and our waiter stopped at the table twice, three times if you include giving our bill. Our meal came before we got our drinks or cornbread. And we had to ask the food runners to grab them for us. Seriously disappointed. I used to suggest this place to everyone, now I just warn them about the poor service.
Ashley Elizabeth
This was the first time I actually ever tried oysters. Needless to say, I now like oysters. Drinks were great, staff was awesome. Gets a little busy here though. Worth the wait if you have one.
M Frost
Went on a Tuesday, there were 2 of us and though there were many open tables we were sat right next to the bar area where the servers get water and punch in orders; so not great.
I wanted the fried chicken special and asked if I could substitute a wing for a drumstick and the server said no because it was a special. If it had been totally busy I can understand, but again, the dining room was wide open, I highly doubt everybody was ordering the special.
I got the chicken fried chicken instead and while it was good the 1 piece of relatively small chicken was overshadowed by the mountain of mashed potatoes it came with.
My daughter got the chicken po' boy with fries, the fries were over seasoned and again the small piece of chicken was dwarfed by the huge piece of bread it came on.
I feel the quality of the food and service from Maxie's has unfortunately declined in recent months.
Brandon Combs
Maxie's is a treat. The food is affordable, yet does not feel cheap. They have some great specials, and the staff is very helpful with menu. The food is fantastic, and the portions of the entrees are generous. I typically leave with a take home box for lunch the next day. Don't skip out on this place.
Luke Miller
I had my first visit to Maxie's tonight and it was amazing. The food was exceptional and the cocktails and beer selection were very well made. Our service was great, the only problem I had with our waiter was the number of amazing choices that he gave us to choose from for our meal.
lisa burgos
Everything was amazing.
We bellies up at the upstairs bar.
Ordered a dozen $1 oysters, $21 less than normal price
$1 off fried green tomatoes
$ any drink, we my husband and i each had a bloody mary. The bloodys had a peel-and-eat shrimp.
Asparagus soup
Thursday special: rack and mac- rack of ribs, sauce on the side, and hot chicken mac.
Complimentary cornbread and sweet butter.
The food was So.Good. Every single thing. Erik and cant remember he last time we had a meal this fricking delicious.
Also we had incredible service. Chad was our bartender/ took our order. He made us feel at home and took really good care of us!! The servers were also great, we had 2, i dont know their names.
We are in the service industry, and we give everyone tonight 5 stars. The food- 5 stars.
Thank you all for this awesome experience, even on the back end- those we have not met.
You are doing something really right.
I pretty much never write reviews.

The food was excellent quality, and the portions were extremely large! The place was packed on a Tuesday night, which tells you it's good food. They also did a great job with the southern spice flavors.
Gary Johnson
Great food, raw bar, drinks and service. Authentic gumbo, complimentary sweet cornbread s big winner. Crowded and noisy but us a positive energy sort of way. Food is made with knowledge and love.
Ewok Purtwee
I just love this place! Had the Hot Chicken last night. Haven't had it in a about a year, but it was just as I had remembered! Delicious! Staff is on point. All work as a team toward good service. They always have an impressive oyster selection also, and I can't help but have a few each visit!
Dan ''Spiffy'' Neuman
My wife wanted "the best crab cakes in Milwaukee". This place kept coming up, and while crab cakes are more of an east coast thing, we both love cajun/creole food so it seemed like the perfect place to try.
Atmosphere is interesting. Black ceiling, chandeliers, blood red walls. Friendly staff. Theme seems to be various on cajun staples with some other soul food thrown in.
We started with drinks. I got a hurricane, and my wife got the Maxie 75. They were strong, which they better be for $8 for small glasses. But delicious.
I tried the seafood gumbo. It was good, but not memorable. Needed lots of hot sauce.
For appetizers I had wings and my wife had crawfish bites. The crawfish bites tasted fresh but were a bit chewier than normal. They came with a remoulade that was a bit more mustardy than we are used to. The wings were very interesting. Extremely think breading, and then a sweet, almost Nashville style sauce. I really liked them but wanted to save room for other things so I ate two and took the rest home. Unfortunately they did not keep AT ALL-- by the time we got home the breading had turned to mush. No clue how they could ever sell these for takeout.
My wife got the crabcakes, and while they were strangely burnt looking, they were exactly what she wanted. They came with red beans & rice, which she added sausage to. I got shrimp and grits, and it was pretty standard for good cajun shrimp and grits. I would definitely get them again.
I also got an order of cajun BBQ shrimp to go, as I love cajun BBQ shrimp. They werent bad, but they were nothing like the BBQ shrimp of New Orleans. I was disappointed.
For dessert, my wife got caramel apple cheesecake and I got pumpkin pecan bread pudding. I'm not wild about pumpkin stuff besides pie, but the bread pudding was AMAZING. My wife ate a few bites of the cheesecake and gave me the rest. It was good, but she makes better.
Our total came to $150, which is not unreasonable, but it wasnt a cheap date.

If you are in the mood for Southern Comfort food add this restaurant to your list. Enjoyed the corn bread basket. Cajun fries are unique and very good. Staff was friendly and courteous. Unisex bathrooms.
Sarah Pittner
The most delicious cocktails! And the fried green tomatoes and oysters are amazing as well. Make sure to book a reservation in advance.
Patrick Radlinski
Overall experience was great!
Best pork cheeks around!
Rib selection was a little off for overall region but that was the beat cajun food I've had in a long time!
If you are looking for some great food, stop by Maxies! Cant wait to go back !
Joel Hansen
So the food here was delicious, but I cannot tell you how turned off I was to find out that the (normal, machine) ice in my whiskey was charged two dollars? Not that big of a deal I suppose, but the meal was already expensive.
Robert Mc Mullen
Great, wonderful, perfect and, Delicious! I would bring anyone to this restaurant any day. It is good to bring tourists of Milwaukee to. I would bring a bunch of friends here, heck, I already have. Food is really good. Price 20 - 25$ / p.p.
Brian Christman
Always good food. The spicy fried chicken dinner was great, but the chicken was a bit greasy. I know it sounds odd to call fried chicken greasy, but there was a small puddle of oil on my plate. Nonetheless, everything was tasty and I will be back
Adam M.
The food is amazing! My only 2 dislikes are that I wish the prices were a bit lower (even of only by $2 or something) & that when they bring you the complementary cornbread that it was warm without having to ask for it. Past those points, you won't be disappointed with Maxie's
natasha gregory
Greens are to die for... pulled pork another favorite. Stay away from the rice and beans they are missing something... ordered carry out and my fries were super cold and looked old. Cornbread is AMAZING but they can keep the side of orange butter didn’t go well together... Fried Chicken was fresh and the skin (my fav) was so crunchy... originally came a cross this place looking for oysters... but because of the virus no fresh seafood anywhere
Selendra Barefield
Ordered the gumbo to go. It was decent, flavorful.
Kimberly Pollman
Ben was the best server!!! Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is still on tap. Fried green tomatoes were great. Cornbread and orange honey butter hit the spot. The fish fry has changed to haddock but it is as good as ever! Left overs for fish tacos for two days. I should have taken a piece of Coca-Cola Cake home for later. Can't wait to come back for Brisket with mac'n'cheese. Say 'Hi' to Mary D if she is working.
Andy Saputo
Food was amazing. Staff is really friendly and the owner is very kind and attentive. If you're looking for great Southern food in Milwaukee, this is THE place.
Marilyn Hartmann
Excellent Southern food, great wait staff. Prices are average & they have daily specials. I would recommend making reservations as it was middle of the week & they were packed. Parking is across the street from the restaurant. Helps to know that.
Amy Mueller
Food is delicious and portions are generous. Prices are mid-range and there is an extensive drink menu (beer, wine, and cocktails). Check the wait time before going or put your name on the list online. Good spot with good food!
William Banks
Outstanding food, phenomenal service, and an overall welcoming environment. If you find yourself in (or near) Milwaukee, do yourself a favor a check this place out. Maxie’s is doing food service at a very high level and I dig it!!!
Kimberly Lowe
Some of the best Louisiana food I've had in a long time. Great New Orleans cocktail list. It's a little pricey but well worth it.
Brian Barrett
A great place to go and get some good southern comfort food. I've been there three times during my short stay in Milwaukee, and it is definitely a good place to try out. The parking is a bit tough, and there was a bit of a wait, but that was going during peak dinner hours on the weekend with a party of 4 or more.
If you're in the area, and you're in the mood for some southern comfort food, I'd recommend checking this place out.
Todd Hollfelder
Disappointing! Maxie's advertises itself as American Southern cuisine but misses the mark. Yes, there is unlimited corn bread on the table but I find those Jiffy mixes at the grocery store more appetizing. The oysters weren't Southern.. they were imported from Maine... and had this sandy, dirty taste that real Louisiana oysters don't. I found Maxie's to be more of a seafood restaurant... but they do have some nice vegan/vegetarian dishes. Note the difference between vegan/vegetarian dishes vs. options. Maxie's doesn't just throw some greens on a plate, they have real meal selections. I had a fantastic grapefruit salad with nuts and blackened chicken strips... however, I counted 3 small segments of fruit in the entire thing. Guess I was lucky though. My other guests only had two each. For $17, my salad with chicken and $21, for the same salad with shrimp, I don't think a little more grapefruit would break the bank. My suggestion is, go to Maxie's for drinks and appetizers, then head someplace else for your meal.
Dave Stauffacher
Historically this place has been great. Took my wife out to celebrate a special occasion, and the service was terrible. We had to flag people down to get a water glass refilled and we waited more than 15 minutes for our waiter to run our card to settle the bill. The food was a bit off - it didn't taste nearly as fresh as it has in the past. Comparing this most recent visit to past visits, it feels like something at Maxie's has changed. It didn't have the same energy that it used to have.
Brooke Smeltzer
We ordered oysters, a seafood stew, and duck. All were delicious! All staff was friendly. Stimulating yet relaxed environment.
I loved my time there!
Kali Behlmer
Why did I wait so long to come here?? My new favorite restaurant for a date or special occasion. I get the beef brisket and mac&cheese every time because it's INCREDIBLE and the leftovers give me two more dinners at home. Don't even bother with the other bbq places in town. Maxie's is it!!!
Steve
Awesome BBQ and southern food. There were also a lot of options for seafood! They give you a big basket of cornbread with your meal. The service was fast and friendly. There is a parking lot but it is across the street.
Tonja Stokes
Ladies night at Maxie's! This was my first time eating here. I must say Maxie's has exceeded my expectations! Hands down, the food is Excellent! Five Stars Plus! Matt was our waiter and he provided excellent service. Very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. Made several recommendations for us. The quaiilty of the food was awesome. Everything was plated so beautiful. The food was amazing! Absolutely delicious. WOW we were very impressed. I order the Pecan-Crusted Rushing Waters Trout Filets. OMG it was fabulous. I will most definitely order again. I Highly recommend this restaurant. You will leave 100% satisfied!!
Elle
The food was delicious, with large portions. Service was great. There were a generous selection of cocktails. I'm already planning to take my family when they visit. An upscale atmosphere with downhome cooking.
Derek Schreiber
Best place to get a great variety of southern brewery beers. Abita is my favorite brewery and they always have the brews outside of the basics. The food is amazing as always and the service is top notch. If you plan on coming on a weekend or late weeknight, make sure you have time to wait as the place is always hopping. Tip: if you don't mind eating at the bar, the upstairs bar is more available and has great seating and service is faster. I will always come here for a good taste of the south. Best in Milwaukee.
Benjamin Sharples
If you're looking for Cajun food in Wisconsin, Maxie's is by far your best option. Their creativity and quality are consistently fantastic, and their prices are reasonable. It's definitely worth at least one visit.
Stuart Loe
Everything is top notch at Maxie's. From the mojitos to the delicious and moist smoked meats. Mac n cheese is legit
Andy Stanislaw
Love this place. Food is always fantastic, and the drink menu is always on point. Generally try to order one of the specials... but to this point have liked everything off the normal menu as well. Gumbo is perfect, chicken friend chicken, and ribs are fantastic!
Ian Carroll
Always love going to Maxie's. The food is amazing, even my southern wife says it's the best comfort food she's ever had and she's been to Louisiana quite a few times! The oyster happy hour alone is a great reason to go to Maxie's. The entire staff is all very skilled and friendly and the bartenders especially are great. If you're looking for a good comfort food spot in MKE Maxie's is your place
Michael Mooney
Had an incredible meal last night at this gem of a Milwaukee restaurant. Was greeted by friendly staff and ordered fresh oysters on the half shell flown in today. Very tasty, hit the spot. Tried the arugala salad which was unique and memorable! I was impressed how an arugala salad can be so savory. It was served with a buttermilk dressing that added a level of freshness. I followed this up with frogmore stew, what a treat! The broth was tasty, the shrimp mussels and whitefish were cooked to perfection and the andouille sausage was the perfect compliment. I soaked it up with toasted french bread. Saw desserts but didn't have an appetite for more tonight. Will be back to try their BBQ and desserts! Great service and worth a wait if need be. The place has a positive buzz you feel and it makes you smile and want to eat.
Dawn Schaefer
Fabulous food, no matter what you order. Their cornbread, brought to the table in lieu of bread, is worth the trip itself. I had fried catfish; the cornbread batter was crusp without a hint of grease, the fish underneath moist and flavorful.
Be sure to get there early. Very early. We we're there at 4:45; by the time we left at 6:15, the place was packed, the noise level almost unbearable, like being stopped at a long traffic light behind a Harley with illegal pipes.
Raven Jaxsnerdymommy
My friend took me here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. Most of the time, I take something home, but I finished off that plate and was completely satisfied. My mojito was perfect and the ambiance was perfect for either a date night or just dinner with friends.
Max Day
Best meal I've had in a long time. Everything was delicious from the cornbread, to the fresh oysters, and then my entrée the frogmore stew. My wife had the grilled trout and a lovely salad. Everything was soooo good. A little expensive but worth it, not over priced. And our server was very informative and attentive. Love this place!
Linzi Sorum
Great happy hour, best mojito in town. Love the unique menu options. One of our favorite places to get a quick drink & appetizer or stay for dinner. There's a bar area on both levels so waiting for your table during peak times goes quick thanks to the atmosphere.
Antonio Sosa
Best southern food! Cajun Mahi mahi was espectacular
Danielle Jahn
Happy Hour!! Super fresh oysters (fresh seafood flown in five days a week) at $1 each at happy hour. Chicken fried chicken was awesome, corn and crab chowder as well.
Byron Cooper
The food and service was great. This was my first time going and I wasn't let down. everything had a good flavor and they give you so much food for a good price.
K
Our server was outstanding. His name was Nicholas. He knew a lot of details re: the menu items and was very welcoming & fun. It was really busy yet we never noticed because he was still attentive to us and kept us informed. Honestly, he's a fantastic server and I hope that this review will be seen by his employer at Maxie's because I think Nicholas/Nick deserves to be recognized for going above and beyond. And you can just tell that's his personality. He helped make the special night for my sister's and I go off without a hitch.
I'd recommend Maxie's to anyone who's looking to go eat somewhere with great service, food, drinks, decor, and ambiance. Maxie's is a really unique & special place. I'll definitely try to get back there to try more food & drink items.
*The only reason I didn't give Maxie's a 5 star rating is because our table was right by the entrance. And everytime a person used the door, I could feel it. I was actually cold. So maybe trying to make a more efficient barrier would help. But that's just my opinion.
Samantha Lobo
The fried chicken special on Tuesday is nuts. You should definitely share it - too much food for one person. Pay the upcharge to get it done Nashville style. Can't wait to have it again!

I can no longer give this place 5 stars as I had in the past. It’s true they are still good, but the last 2 trips here where awful. Apparently if your not dressed decent you get terrible service. Second they used to do really well with their “boards” but the last 2 preserved boards I had where borderline disgusting. It would appear they have reached the point where a restaurant thinks they can do anything and it will be acceptable. Not so.

Amazing food, great portion sizes, extremely friendly and welcoming wait staff... What else could you want? We went for my daughter's birthday and I've been dreaming about what I want next time i go since then. AWESOME!

So I came here with my son while.visiting Milwaukee and was not disappointed. The gumbo, hot chicken nuggets, pork confit, frogmore stew and jambalaya was all unbelievable. On top of that the grits were so damn good I had to finish those first. This place is totally the best.
Igor
friendly and prompt service. the catfish Po'boys are delicious but very messy. fries could use a bit more seasoning. overall very good
Neil Zielinski
If you live in MKE and haven't eaten here, you owe it to yourself to do so. If you're really enjoying your evening, don't expect your tab to be shy of $50/person. Get the oysters, get a full entree and have plenty of mixed drinks to truly soak in how great everything in this restaurant is.
Joanne Watt
Appetizer - Cajun popcorn with remoulade - delicious. Gumbo - amazing. Hubby had pecan-crusted trout and cleaned his plate. I had shrimp and grits - incredibly tasty sauce. We went early and had great service.
Jo Walston
Waitstaff was great. Bartenders were great. Highlights: Maxie's margarita, Tasso gravy (Odd, but very tasty. Cumin, in gravy?), grits (spectacular!). My only complaint is that the sweetness level on the cornbread, which is served cold and slimy, is totally out of control, and the butter served with it is also grossly oversweet. My east Texas grandma (God rest her soul) would've lost her mind over this. If you must make the cornbread this sweet, at least serve it warm, with regular butter.
Gretchen Dziadosz
the platonic ideal of pulled pork! same with the beef brisket. everything is good here, but some things are spectacular. we had a large party and had to wait. we enjoyed the very well-made cocktails in the lounge upstairs. when it took longer than anticipated, the owner comped our appetizers. great food and great service. we shall return.
Ty “Jadore26” Butler
The ranch cheeseburger was mediocre. The The fries were overcooked. The cornbread was good. The mojito was jumpin. The wings were FIRE!!! Service was great. Hubby and I will give them another shot.
Karie Valona
Service was amazing, food was incredible, atmosphere was great, truly an awesome time, will be back!
Jamie Jensen
They raised the prices and removed the chicken fried chicken. 😞 It used to be great but now it's only good. The service and staff are still amazing though.
Jonathan Fletcher
Atmosphere and staff were amazing!!!! The food was much to be desired. If you think this food is authentic southern food, please visit the south!!! The food is not very good and disappointing!!! Please don't put red beans and rice on your menu if your not gonna put any effort in it!
Michael
Fish fry was good! Crab and corn chowder was excellent. It was very busy and the fish was 86'ed by 8pm. Meaning sold out. We also are the mussels, which were very good. A little pricey, but worth it.
Christopher J
Another great Milwaukee foodie place. We were 15 or 16 people. High maintenance table, lots of apps and drinks. Service rocked and the food is authentic. Killer ribs, and creative twists on old school southern.
Schoen Sevedge
We went there tonight for our 41st anniversary and absolutely fell in love with this restaurant. Our server Robert was excellent he took great care of us. The food was excellent we will be back. Kudos to you!
Jim Knapinski
Good eats, looking for Cajun food with some decent heat. Looks to be always busy so make a reservation.
Tony Gradecki
I can't say a bad thing about this place! Phenomenal food, great beer selection, happy hour oysters. Need I say more?!
If visiting during typical dinner hours, book your place in line on Yelp.

Great service and consistent good eats.
All our meals were awesome And the NOLA oysters were my fav appetizer.
Kelli M
Waiter was nice and helped me with some gluten free options. I asked about a couple of items but they couldnt make them into gf items. I ordered a shrimp BBQ appetizer and he did come back and tell me it wasnt 100% gluten free, which was nice. I ended up getting the fried green tomatoes which were okay. I wish they would just put a GF menu together so I didn't have to ask a ton of questions. It would make it easier for me and the waiter. I asked about dessert but they didnt have anything other than ice cream. They did tell me that if I called the day before I came they could probably prepare something in advance which was really nice.
Todd
Very enjoyable dinner with friends! It was busy on Friday night, so don’t expect to walk in during the busy times.
The oysters were great!
vanessa hossman
Maxies has GREAT FOOD!! Service was fantastic! We ate the bar. I had crabcakes and my husband had the chicken w Tasso gravy. Chizkwn was excellent as usual. Crabcakes were too mushy although they use very little filler. Salads are SO incredibly tasty!
Monica Yang
OMG!!! This place is to die for! If you haven't been, you have to go. We ordered a lot of different types of food and it was fabulous. I was looking for seafood and I got it. The raw oysters to the main dish was so good!!! We will definitely be coming back sooner rather than later!!!!
Xo Xo
I am so glad I came across this restaurant. It is seriously so much more than just your average, run of the mill restaurants, which are so similar when it comes to their options and choices for the food dishes offered on their menu. And that just becomes very boring!! But Maxie's was uniquely delicious!! 😋 …
Junior Rivera
Great Southern food, their cornbread is out of this world and they have happy hour $1.00 oysters
Shandra Zidar
My absolute favorite restaurant in Milwaukee! Always great service, we usually get Christian who always does an amazing job! Oysters & the Hot Chicken are my favorites! Definitely recommend!!!
ronnieco23
Great atmosphere. Fabulous food. Great cocktails. Staff is friendly, knowlegable and attentive. Bar staff knows how to make awesone drinks. Biiiiig portions, bring your appetite or take some home for lunch the next day. Gets pretty busy call ahead or download their app to check wait times. 2 bars and dining areas 1 is upstairs. They do rent out areas for private parties.
Nate Huitt
Delicious southern style food and drinks! I highly recommend the ribs and mac special, the amount of food you get is crazy! I had three meals out of it. Always great staff as well.
Lisa Pepelea
What a great meal! And probably the best hurricane I've ever had to drink too. I just wish I'd had room to try the banana chocolate coconut cream pie for dessert...it sounds soooooooo good but I was sooooooooo stuffed. I finished the crabcake platter to my surprise and my husband finished the half slab of ribs plus beans fries and salad. Have to wait until next time to try the pie. Carter provided excellent service so I hope we sit at his table again. Thanks Maxie's!
kathy roethle
We had one of the specials tonite with the flounder. Our server, Cory, highly recommended it. Well, we were not disappointed. Cory was very professional, friendly and very attentive. Would definitely go back.
Michele Braze
Always great! We have to go back for dessert. Amazing Flatbread pizza appetizer, best cornbread, mac n cheese, brisket, ribs, chicken. Oh so good.
Monique Hill
Food was delicious! Staff was great!! Only getting 4 star because I would have liked to see more food options.
Dave Shapiro
Maxie’s is an excellent place to go for some uncommon food in the Milwaukee area. It is conveniently located just off the freeway. Maxie’s offers fresh shrimp and oyster (flown in 5 days a week). It is Southern style cooking and the ingredients are locally sourced. There are specials depending on the day of the week and there is a fully stocked bar. They specialize in Southern style BBQ, Creole and Cajun flavors. It is handicapped accessible and there is outdoor seating (weather permitting). Maxie’s is a supper club and is probably not for kids.
S Baker
Excellent food (Frogmore Stew) and drink (Maxie's Manhattan), great service and a fun atmosphere, all at very reasonable prices. We will definitely go again.
Rachelle Berginz
I do consider myself somewhat of a foodie and Maxies did not disappoint. The food was amazing, nice portion size and pricing. What really got my attention was the amazing service. Never have a been to a restaurant where not only was our waitress right on top of things, but it seemed as though the entire staff always had an eye on all the tables. Drinks got refilled, table was wiped down several times, clean plates were given. I don't mean to get away from the wonderful food but I was shocked. I have been to a lot of restaurants all over WI and some other states and never encountered such attentive staff. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Oysters, gumbo and the portabella po' boy with cajun fries were delicious! Happy hour from 4pm-6pm I believe Mon thru Fri and I dined on a Tues night. Very tasty virgin bloody mary. I could go on and on and on.....
Please give it a try if you'd love a wonderful dining experience with delicious cajun food!

They dont accept reservations but call ahead to get on the wait list and it cuts down your want time when you get there. The pork confit flat bread was delicious and the home corn bread is great. If you like a lot of rice you will like the Jambalaya. Overall, the food is great the atmosphere is cool come by and check out Maxie's!!!
Luke Zepnick
Deluxe southern Cajun eats in a cool, contemporary space. Maxie's has perfected the down-home feel in both their menu and their atmosphere. This is one of the top places I recommend when people are visiting Milwaukee, because it always delivers on quality and value! If you're like me, you'll enjoy a few oysters, maybe some gumbo, and definitely a po-boy sandwich that will keep you coming back time and time again.
Keith Gliesman
Come here every time I'm in town great spot! Expensive.
Nickolaus Triantafelo
Went they're for the Mardi Gras menu was not disappointed. The Gumbo The Cajun popcorn and the andouille sausage corn dogs are were great. Excellent service too.
Joseph Ziegler
Service was great, $23 for fries and dried out brisket covered in a basic bbq sauce will not make me return. Almost like beef jerky- not impressed. The $8 macaroni and cheese was flavorful.
Spencer W. Liebel
Everything we ordered was excellent. The food was prepared just as it is in the south and cajun country. The service was great and the restaurant was immaculate. I'm excited to go back.

As a person from atlanta, it's difficult to find quality southern food in Milwaukee. As one of the few restaurants here, maxies covers a variety of styles from st Louis to Memphis and others. While I admit it doesn't quite reach the best I've ever had, it's still very, very good. The Mac and cheese and Cajun fries are a must with whatever inevitably great entre you choose. The ambiance is fun, busy yet lightly lit. Speaking of busy, I'm not kidding. Expect a significant wait, or use the nowait app to get in line. The service is always great, and I think anyone craving a taste of the South would appreciate it. Don't miss out on their other events, which include drink pairings to various unique dishes--the true mission of maxies really shines in these activities.

Four of us decided to try Maxie's while we were in town for business. We each had something different (jambalaya, shrimp and grits, trout, and chicken) and each loved what we had. Huge portions, so you won't go away hungry. The motif upstairs was also fun and interesting.
Jeffrey Vanderburgh
Every time I go to Maxie's I have a great time with great servers well crafted drinks and killer food. There is not a bad dish on the menu. They are one of my favorites in the Milwaukee area.
Ryan Cridelich
My wife and I went here for the first time. The southern style food and menu selections were amazing! We'll definitely be back
Thomas Monahan
Fantastic Creole Food. Love the ambiance... reminds me of New Orleans....

You want Cajun? You want great service? You want specialty off menu preparations? This is the place! Erica ROCKS the waitress role, Peter is a friendly and attentive manager working the floor. Crawfish etouffee is absolutely amazing. Be sure and try their homemade Fresno pepper hot sauce. HINT - big discounts on fresh and delicious oysters during happy hour. A great selection!!!!
elizabeth geesaman
We went there during their Mardi Gras menu. In my opinion the Crawfish Étouffeé was the star of the evening and should have a regular place on the menu.
Aaron Patterson
It was just okay overall. The ribs were very good. Mac n cheese was bland and not warm/hot. The shrimp were nothing special. Also, over priced for the quality of food.
Elle Marie
Everything was amazing. Oysters are only $1 each on Wednesdays! That plus half priced bottles of wine make for an excellent treat in the middle of the week.
Janese Brodkowski
We love Maxies always amazing service! The wings are def one of our favs it's a must get! You cant go wrong w anything on the menu. White cheddar grits are fire🔥🔥🔥 …
Julianna Whaley
Great southern style food! A little on the pricey side but well worth it! Such a relaxed atmosphere and even have an upstairs bar and lounge area.
Jason Powell
Excellent southern fare cuisine and excellent work staff. Would definitely go there again. Bring and appetite though as the dish sizes are generous.
Rhonda Prestegard
A really great spot to eat. I had the chicken fried chicken. It was lightly breaded with a mildly spicy, crispy breading, sitting atop amazing mashed potatoes and gravy. Service was excellent

(Review from 4/1/15)
I love food. I travel places, and my main focus is trying the food. When I go to Las Vegas, I'm there for the FOOD. This is why I love New Orleans so much. The food there was a dream-come-true for me. And if you want to taste some spot-on authentic southern/New Orleans style food, Maxie's has it!
I just took my girlfriend to Maxie's for our 2 year anniversary on the suggestion from a co-worker (great recommendation). As soon as we tasted our appetizer or New Orleans BBQ Shrimp, I was taken back to Louisiana immediately. The flavors in the sauce and the freshness of the shrimp was just as it was back when I was on Bourbon Street in 2005.
For our entrees, I chose the Frogmore Stew which had shrimp, ocean fish, andouille sausage, seasoned broth with corn, and crawfish. I overheard our server at the table behind us talking about how they might not have mussels in right now as they have been overly small this time of season. My stew was supposed to have mussels, but I was surprised to see the crawfish as a welcome replacement! My girlfriend picked one of the daily specials, Grilled Marlin. Neither of us have had the opportunity to try marlin before, so that really got our attention. It was absolutely delicious!
Dessert was Maxie's March Madness parfait special, which was red velvet cake layers with cream and chocolate chips in a hurricane glass with a side of their homemade vanilla icecream.
Overall, we had an incredible anniversary dinner that I am extremely grateful for! Our server was very attentive and really helped to make the experience enjoyable. The decor reminded me of many of the buildings I went through down in New Orleans. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu!

Atmosphere was inviting, waiter (son of the chef) was amazing, engaging, fun & helpful when ordering.
Taylor Rusniak
Had the half rack of Memphis ribs. Sweet sauce & tasty. Definitely recommend going during happy hour for $1 fresh oysters.
John Fassl
Great food! Baked and Fresh oysters are terrific. Waitstaff is friendly and helpful.
Covid19 precautions are maintained.
Peter Tonn
Great service and delicious food!! Definitely will be back.
Teresa Klockow
Usually have great service, this visit we sat at the bar for drinks and appetizers. Service was fair. Ordered ousters and had to ask for them when our other food came out. Bartender was preoccupied by talking to friends at the bar.
Alissa Smith
The service at Maxi's is top notch! Our server, who usually bartends was so knowledgeable about the food and spirits menu, I was amazed. I would give Maxi's 5 stars, but the food was just good, not great.
Marie Bruskiewicz
Great food and add assume service. Bar tender and waiter going over and beyond. Highly recommend, we will return. We drive 50 minutes to enjoy this great food.
Lauren Ramsey
An absolute treat. Oysters just $1 during happy hour. Excellent staff and service. Fresh and creative daily specials and fun cocktails.

A unique selection of food in the Milwaukee area. I'm a big fan of their Mac and cheese as well as the fried green tomatoes or okra.
Service is good, but its often crowded and I find that the dining area is always too loud. Uncomfortably loud.
adrienne scholfield
6 pieces of shrimp in my spicy shrimp creole dish. The rest was tomatoes and spaghetti noodles...for $20. 😑 This was disappointing. …
Nick Lange
One of my favorite places to go to get collard greens, outside of my grandma's house! The food is awesome and really good cocktail menu.
Dabey Dabey
Food was excellent as always. Waited left a little to be desired. Not very attentive. Took too long to get drinks. Never even asked if we wanted a dessert.
Kyle Gross
This place was great! The food was amazing and service was excellent. If you have a craving for southern food this is the spot to go. Have fun and enjoy your dinner.
Catie O'Donnell

James Barber

Here on business and wanted something different. Maxie's gave me what I wanted. Being from Georgia, the Frogmore Stew and "Shrimp and Grits" caught my eye. Friendly place, great service from Aaron and the food was excellent. If you've never had either of these dishes, give them a try. Its a casual place where you'll feel right at home. I'll be back!.
Jason Atchison
Did curbside pickup for my wife's birthday. She was super excited! Pickup was super quick and easy. I also grabbed the Togo hurricane kit which was a huge hit!

Had the jambalaya with chicken and sausage at Bistille Days and last I brought me back to my first nite in New Orleans. Can’t believe this place has been in my city and I didn’t know. Will be making reservations very soon.
Tiffany Allen
Nice place for parties good food good service
Timothy Maas
I truly love this place! The service was great! The food, especially the collard greens, was amazing. Atmosphere was perfect! Thanks for the memorable Birthday!
Brian Maguire
This place is awesome. I'm not a "foodie" and I'm not even a big seafood guy, but this place is most excellent. I usually stick to the fried chicken po' boy or the fish po' boy, but I recently had the brisket and it was scrumtrulescent. The service is always excellent, I have never been disappointed in Maxie's. Worth every dollar.
gat 2asp
The food is awesome great decore. The have a lot for specials. Staff is super nice. A great place to take a date. Mine went smashing good. Thanks Maxie's.
ryan burwell
Always a nice place for dinner. Not many o other places where you can get raw oysters and peel and eat shrimp. We almost always leave with extra food since the appetizers and corn bread are a must. Also, great happy hour if you can get there before 6.
Michele Gilhouse
Great happy hour specials on food, staff was pleasant, entrees were delicious.
Pierre Dorsey
Fantastic dining experience. Waiters , servers and hostess were very knowledgeable about all the menu items my fiancee and I wanted to try. Definitely worth the money.
Nolan Karklus
The food is great and the service is pretty good too. The employees work very efficiently and they are good at giving recommendations for menu items.
John Odea
ALWAYS great food and service..
B Paul
Our waiter, John was professional and fantastic. The food all around was delicious. Part of the party was from the south and felt like he was back home. Thank you for a great Fathers Day.
Arn Stanczyk
I have not been impressed with this restaurant, despite my and my wife's love of Cajun /N.O. style food. We last were at Maxie's several years prior to or visit yesterday. Again, same findings...ok service but food was overpriced and underwhelming.
M Wilcox
I LOVE their food!!

Ok..... just ok.... maybe if I try it again and get a different entree. Shrimp n grits not so good... scallops however were ok.... just ok. 75$ later I left there and went to eat else where.... the tyme infused peach drink is wonderful.
Vincent Charles
Rib special was alright. The sauce was quite spicy and the mac and cheese was average.
Otherwise well priced, clean, friendly and a nice vibe!
Ricky Scampini
Happy Hour prices are great! I love the oysters there and make sure you get their baked Mac & Cheese! One of my favorite Milwaukee restaurants!
Kyle Kasprzak
Maxie's is consistently serving delicious food in a vibrant and entertaining environment.
You'll be satisfied with anything on the menu but you'll absolutely love the Mac & Cheese. It puts Mac & Cheese only shops to shame.
David McKeith
Great food and service. Decor is nice for this type of restaurant. Upstairs is very loud and hard to talk. This would be very hard to correct. Wish they had the oysters offered as a full meal.
Barb Hannes
First time there. Food was great. I had Cajun popcorn with the soup of the day-barley mushroom. Will be returning to try other dishes.
Alex Burbey
The service was amazing and the food even more so. If you like southern food this is the place to go. Also their whiskey selection is huge.
Daigham Bowers

Jennifer Brindley
Always delicious every single time. Great vegan options and amazing service. Outdoor dining here is my favorite when it’s nice out. ❤️
Martin Asao
Best chicken fried chicken place in WI. Good selection of beverages and fun menu options. Thursday's 1/2 rack and mac night is worth the visit just for the unique off the menu mac and cheese options.
Steven Pedersen
Awesome service . Food was so fresh and made to perfection.
