Reviews of Mader's Restaurant
Daily Driver
Warm and inviting atmosphere and decor. Lots of seating for all preferences. Beer, wine, and cocktail list is good. Overall good food selection on the menu with good authentic German choices. Ruladen was perfectly cooked and had a wonderful blend of flavors. The oxtail soup was great. The salad is cut quite large, which may not appeal to picky eaters. Service was prompt and friendly, and they had a nice and simple dessert menu.

An absolutely amazing piece of Milwaukee’s German heritage. The building itself is a spectacular landmark, and the food and service are outstanding. Our waiter, Miles, was a delight! So helpful and friendly. Every item we ordered was perfectly prepared and so flavorful. We will definitely be returning here again on our next trip to Wisconsin!

One of the best meals I've ever had. We had a 6pm dinner reservation for a group of 8. Including 2 toddlers. I ordered a cup of ox soup, had a heferweiss beer, and shared a tour of Germany with others in my party. All solid choices. If it's your first time here and you have a big enough dinner party, I'd recommend the tour of Germany. Plenty of good meats and sides for 3 people or more.
The waitress was very friendly and helpful. She did a great job accommodating all our orders and requests.

This is a historic building, very antique and smells ancient. Very positive vibe in restaurant. I ordered food and on wait time they served with house pretzel bread with butter which was amazing. Veggie spaetzle is so delicious tho am full I over ate it 😂😂💗💗 the creamy texture, veggies, the caramelised onions and the spaetzle everything tasted so perfect. Spicy chicken sandwich was scrumptious and the fries were fresh and could eat all of them. Must try German restaurant in town 😍❤️🔥🔥🔥

Such a great spot! Valet & all of the staff were extremely accommodating and kind. Food was delicious! The pretzels, latkes, soup and apple dessert were a few of our favorites. My parents have been coming here for years whenever we are in town- never disappoints
Christopher Paquette
Totally lived up to expectations! Great atmosphere. Food is top notch. Duck Liver Dumpling soup is a must. The Weiner Schnitzel was perfect. I ordered it Holstien Style (eggs, capers, anchovies) Strange as that combination sounds, it works and tasted amazing.

Fun quirky place in a great location. My mother especially enjoyed it. Food looked great and they had an excellent drink menu. The music was a bit repetitive (perhaps they can add more variety that still fits in with their theme?) And some of the employees clothing seemed a bit out of place. Maybe they were going to an anime convention after work in their hot pink maid outfits?

First time going and I enjoyed it. The food wasn't as good as I was expecting. The brussel sprout appetizer was very good with great flavors. I ordered the Veal Schnitzel with spaetzle, red cabbage and sauerkraut for dinner. The spaetzle and Veal were a bit dry and left something to be desired for flavor. The sauerkraut and the red cabbage were very well done. Extremely tasty. The real selling point of Maders though was the decor and atmosphere. Beautiful German touches throughout. Would go again.

I think Mader is more of an institution than it is a fine restaurant. They've been doing the same thing for so long that it turns into a mill where they crank out dishes. Our sampler plates were OK, but not even close to special. The dumpling were so dense I couldn't eat mine. The meats were kind of bland although the sauerbraten was good (but could have used more gravy). We certainly did enjoy the ambiance, the beer and the service. It's a one and done for me.

GERMAN X'MAS BREAKFAST BUFFET 🎄in Milwaukee at @madersrestaurant
Came here after seeing my friends in The Nutcracker 💂 @milwaukeeballet the previous night. Sat at 1pm, pretty packed but not too busy. (You'll need to call and book 1-2 months ahead)
There are two floors with two buffets which is quite impressive. The same food but the bottom floor has sausage. We sat in the far back on the top floor, easy enough for the baby!
Favorites dishes:
🍖 Roasted honey ham (great balance of sweet, salt & very tender)
🐔 Roasted Cornish hen (super tender)
🐟 Whole salmon (pretty fresh)
🍖 Beef (parts that were more medium rare & fatty. Most of it was overcooked as you can see in the video)
🥧 Pecan pie (crispy pecan pieces + sweet pie filling & good crust)
Others items I loved:
🧀 Mac & cheese (large curly noodles)
🌭 German sausage (cut up, wish it was fried for crispiness)
🍈honeydew melon & pineapple (super ripe & sweet)
🐟herring fillet (likely from a can and marinated in liquid but so good!)
🍲 Mushroom soup (a bit oily but nice and fresh, lots of mushroom, not too much cream)
🥧Apple strudel
A bit much for $60 for a buffet without seafood and not including drinks. But still pretty yummy, I think I ate two or three meals worth
Can't wait to try their dinner menu, including pork shank, Reuben rolls, stroganoff, large pretzels etc.

Very warm & welcoming atmosphere. Went for a very special wedding anniversary. Everything requested was honored (Note: made sure to have a 2nd option in the event that primary option was unavailable).
Our waitress was top notch & the food (including desserts (not pictured)) melted in our mouths.
Huge shoutout to Kristen Mader for continuing her family's legacy into its 4th generation (now into its 122nd year) & continuing to maintain/preserve such a unique piece of German heritage & culture for well over a century.
Steven Painter
Excellent experience. The food was fantastic. I had the Rhine Sampler with the veal weiner schnitzel and it was tender and tasty. The spaetzle was cooked to perfection, and the beef stroganoff was wonderful as well. The food seemed a bit over salted, but not too much that it bothered me. The server was friendly and always timely. If you are on a tight budget, probably not the place for you though. A meal for 2 with an appetizer and drinks will probably run you over $100. If you are looking to splurge, Mader's is a fantastic restaurant!
Jaime Soto
Ate and drank alot. The staff was fantastic. Our service was awesome. Food superb. Must go back in a few months just for the atmosphere alone, and schnitzel.
John Froembling
Our family has an amazing time at Mader's! The food was delicious and plentiful. The pretzel appatizer is highly recommended. Also, save room for strudel! The best part of the whole experience was Ty, our server. She was absolutely THE best! Thanks for a wonderful experience Ty and Mader's!!
Erich
Great experience every time I go. Staff is always very friendly and the pork shank is delicious. Great atmosphere for a good German restaurant. Unfortunately they were out of the baked onion soup when we went
Richard Mack Jr
German food you are sure to love. Great staff and deep history. So many famous people have enjoyed this place for over 100 years and so will you. Feel the history.
Scott McCord
4.5 lol
Should be a 5.0
We, my family loved this place!
Excellent food, service and all around! Omg! You must try this authentic German restaurant!
RJ Davis
After a slow start everything was superb! The liver dumpling soup was delicious. The first taste catches you off guard and then every bite after that gets better. Went with a sampler plate and was delighted. The beer was fantastic.
AM Lee
Cool decor, real German feel. Bar area great to eat in. Wiener schnitzel was very good. German potato salad and kraut were fair. Strudel was ok, bottom was over cooked. Beir was excellent. The prices were on the high side too. Wish the bartender was faster, she was lackadaisical. If you can afford it, decent stop.
Jack R
Great Service! Dined I’m on a busy night but still got fast service. I decided to order a Wiener Schnitzel (Vienna Schnitzel) for my dinner (Specialty option). I had never had schnitzel before this and I was blown away by how well it was done! Great spätzle that came with it. I liked it so much I made some at home! I have one, small, problem. There isn’t many options on the menu. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s not a quality restaurant. It means I wish there was MORE quality options to choose. I also ordered the Black Forest cake for dessert and was blown away by the cherries, same with the frosting and cake. I STRONGLY recommend going here. Even on busy days.
Daniel Swanson
This is a Wisconsin institution. The history runs deep and the list of famous guests is very impressive. The ambience is charmingly old world . I had a glass of dry riesling and my wife had the specialty old fashioned. We both had a cup of home made french onion soup that was excellent. I had the weinerscnitzel and my wife had the bavarian sampler. We both prounounced our meals as delicious.
Peter Groset
Absolutely my favorite German restaurant in all of Milwaukee! From the second you walk inside you feel like you've been transported across the world to an authentic old German restaurant. Every dish I've tried has been amazing! I've included a picture of my last dinner, Duck Chambord.
Kelly Werner
Charming landmark restaurant. Can't beat the atmosphere and holiday decorations. Cheese spread appetizer just ok. Surprisingly bland. Had the weisswurst appetizer for my main with side of red cabbage- that was delicious! Friends had onion soup and Reuben rolls said they were good. Can't beat free valet parking also. The gentleman was lovely and offered to let us keep the car there while we walked to our show.
Michael Diaz
We visited on a Sunday, so unfortunately brunch buffet was being served, so I didn't get to have the pork shank I was hoping for. What we had was very good. The buffet had a lot of choices, but too many American standards... I would have liked to have seen more traditional German options, but what was there was very good. The decor alone is worth the visit.
C. Fontana
First time back in 10 years, and it's just as amazing as I remember it! The quality of the various meats here is beyond amazing and the amazing service lacks nothing! Save room for the strudel!
Art Wagoner
Mixed review. The atmosphere was very nice. The Beef and Mushroom Strudel and the Reinischer Saurbraten were both excellent. The Saurbraten was as good as I have had anywhere, including Germany. (My apologies to my German mother-in-law.) The Weiner Schnitzel was good, but woefully undersized (approximately 2" x 3") compared to our expectation. Service was very good for a while, but then the server disappeared while glasses remained empty. The worst part of the experience was that three members of our group received their Schnitzel and nearly 20 minutes later the rest of us received our meals and they received their saurcraut and cabbage. They had already eaten the Schnitzel before the rest of the meal arrived. I also noticed that most of the tables around us had pretzel bread while we had none. The bread pudding was good and the Black Forest Torte was outstanding.
Linda Orillion
Mader's Restaurant graciously gave us a table without their usual reservation❤ From the pretzel with cheese sauce and mustard with a delicious old fashioned, to the Wiener Schnitzel with Spätzle, the food was amazing. I definitely would recommend a reservation but as we delightfully found, a walk about to choose where to eat on the fly, proved perfect!
Ziva Gunther
This place was amazing. The food was excellent. You absolutely must try the old fashioned. Atmosphere was so cool. And I appreciated the free valet parking, especially downtown.

I enjoyed the pork shank and the veal snitzel. Service was good. The food took longer than expected to come to the table but it was hot when it arrived.
K Ott
Attended the Thanksgiving buffet. It was wonderful. All kinds of traditional Thanksgiving fare was there for the consuming, all the food was hot, fresh, and really, really good.
Don't let the price catch you off guard. The buffet is about 50 bucks per person.
Andy Saputo
Delicious food, friendly staff, amazing ambience. Highly recommend this place for authentic German food.
Robert
Absolutely amazing restaurant. The food was fantastic, the decor is authentic, and their famous clientele is fascinating. I made sure to go here on my roadtrip since we don't have places like this in New York. Well worth it!!
Kristine Nelson
Celebrated our mothers 86th bday with lunch at Mader’s and we had a great experience and service! Cocktails, Reuben rolls, beer cheese dip/pretzel crostinis and German sampler plates! Mom even got an Apple strudel dessert!!! Love the old world decor and history of the many celebrities that have dined.
Ratnashree Biswas
Delicious food! Extravagant quantity. I had the butter chicken schnitzel. Highly recommended.
Alfred Collins
Easy check in progress restaurant is amazing has a lot of old world art and armor in restaurant has delicious food went there Saturday didn't leave empty pretzels corn beef and sauerkaurt is a great start staff is very nice and management is extremely nice and caring for staff and guest would recommend

This place lives up to the hype. Food came out quickly and was delicious! The serving sizes were also enormous you can definitely get two meals out of the entree.
Bob Card
Excellent food, and a fun atmosphere. We started with a charcuterie plate and Reuben bites.
The Punisher
Wonderful service and amazing authentic german restaurant. Food is great and fun take drinking into of the Boot shaped glasses. Valet Parking is available. Early Sunday morning you can ONLY get the breakfast buffet. Around noon you can order off the menu.
Jeff Heskin
This place is great! Fantastic German food and beer. Authentic atmosphere (and this is coming from someone who has been to Bavaria, Germany). Reasonable prices, Great service. We couldn't have enjoyed our experience any more than we did; it was perfect.
Mark Mandelbaum
Established 1903 and still serving classic German dishes and beer. Very happy to find this place doing. Very worth the visit!
Kelsi Haber
We had a wonderful time at Mader's! My husband's whole family is born and raised in Germany and he was very impressed with the quality and accuracy of the food. We had lunch and ordered so many delicious dishes. Our favorite was the spaeztle mac and cheese. It was a unique dish that was German inspired. There was a huge group that came in with us so we did have to wait a bit for our food, but the wait staff continually checked on us, apologized, always had our drinks filled, and even gave us some free salads because of the wait. It's a lot of fun too to see all the celebrities that have been there and we got to sit at Bob Hope's table. We can't wait to go again!
Rich Ross
We love Maders. This visit was definitely not the same as past visits. Service was really slow. I would not mention this if they had been busy. Only about 4-5 tables were occupied. Maders is definitely a must try if you like German cuisine.
Kim k
I have been coming here for years and different owners over the time . I have and still enjoy the food. My whole family enjoy the food. You don't have to worry about parking because they do valet parking.
Mary Goluszka
Mader’s is a wonderful escape in Milwaukee. When you walk in the door, you are greeted very warmly. The decor takes you to a Bavarian style lodge. The food and the service are simply outstanding. We have been coming here for 50 years, and have never been disappointed. It’s no wonder so many famous people have eaten here. I cannot wait to go back!
Devon Smith
Stepping into Mader's is like stepping back in time 100 years. The walls are adorned with wood engravings and stained glass depicting Arthurian adventures. Servers wear traditional German attire. The menu contains all the German favorites along with some more modern additions. The staff is friendly and attentive.
Russ Licht
Wow! This place brought back memories of my German grandparents. They would have loved it. Authentic food in old wood paneled surroundings. Great staff. Very friendly, and this building is the oldest restaurant in Milwaukee still standing and serving.
Walk around a little to see German arts and fine wood works. Enjoy the atmosphere.
Ted Wachholz
Whether or not you like German food, Mader's should be on your itinerary whenever you are in Milwaukee. We only had a few appetizers and a couple of Spotted Cow beers, so we left wishing that we could stay and try some more of their food selections. Their menu has all of the great German entrees, with plenty of variety for everyone's taste buds.
Niloofar Hubrich
We had an amazing experience at this restaurant and are so happy that we took a friend’s recommendation and did not let the negative reviews sway our decision. Th host was very friendly and while he was seating us gave us a brief history of the restaurant. It is still owed by the same family and all the art inside are authentic and highly insured. The waiter was warm and friendly and dressed in the traditional lederhosen and made some great suggestions AND gave a bit more history of the restaurant. The food all came out freshly made and super hot. Everything was delicious and worth a trip here. There is a hall of fame to see photos of all the celebrities and ex president that have dined here. The place is authentic and they are very proud of their restaurant and it shows.
Maria Jamison
Food is exceptional and drinks healthy, all surrounded by old-world charm. Best old-fashion in Wisconsin!
Janet Skocy
Had the $38.95 sampler. I do not recommend. Wasn't impressed. Potato dumpling had no flavor and was basically a ball of glue. Fried things were both overdone and underdone. Non-fried meats were ok.
Pretzel bread was great.
But $50 for that and 1 beer? Um yeah, gonna have to say not again...
Caleb Van Beck
Amazing authentic German restaurant in downtown Milwaukee. Food was excellent, beer selection was great, and the atmosphere was one of a kind. No wonder so many celebrities have visited this place! You can't go wrong going here, it's a great restaurant all around. I will be back!
Eric Bailey
Fabulous as always! They were really busy, but the service was good and the food was amazing!

I was here with a group. We filled the private dining section in back. Coming in, I was amazed at the cases of German artifacts, wood carving and stained glass. The meal began with salads, then a main course and finally dessert. I ordered the chicken with veggies and Spätzle, a type of pasta. IT was flavorful except the chicken. The chicken seemed a bit bland and perhaps could use some spice. The serving was big enough I couldn't finish it. I liked the armament and other decoration. The restaurant has photos of some of its celebrity visitors in the hallway including many movie stars and several US Presidents.. Service was excellent.
Jim Brinker
Awesome food and fantastic service. I recommend the Bavarian platter.
Andrea Ayala
Friendly and accommodating staff. Excellent Jagerschnitzel. The giant pretzel was really delicious.
Arlen Tsao
I took a family of 3 from overseas to this Restaurant and came out very satisfied. Upon arrival, we had service to park our car. This is unheard of for a restaurant; normally we only see such services at high-end hotels.
The best thing about this place is that none of their food are too salty. They are well seasoned, without being salty. This tells me the food are authentic German, not some Americanized version. The decortications were cool, felt like a scenic spot and my guests took photos. Our server was very friendly so we ended up taking a few pictures with her.
If I had to choose something to criticize, it would be that the beef was a bit dry. Otherwise, everything else was absolutely delicious. Keep up the good work, you make Milwaukee proud.
Tim Phelps
Service was great, and the food tasted true to the traditional food I've had in Germany. The giant pretzel (which is big enough for at least 6 people) was very good and perfectly baked. I'm giving this review three stars because the menu on the restaurant's website is not up front about their prices, and doing an image search for their menu turns up a number of Mader's menus that show far cheaper, and far more reasonable, prices. While we could have done better research to make sure we were looking at the correct menu, it could have been avoided by Mader's just having updated prices on their website. Prices, for that matter, are borderline ridiculous. A basic schnitzel plate is above $30, and this is among their cheapest dinner entrees. This is exorbitant for a traditional German food that is neither terribly hard to find nor made with exotic ingredients. It was disappointing because it was perfectly good food--just not worth that amount of money.
Olivia
Good food and nice decorations during holiday season.
Matt Gebel
The food was only okay. Service was pleasant yet very slow bringing initial cocktails, beers and appetizers. Not the Mader's I remember. Festive decor that was good...sadly our family won't be returning.
Melonie P
A historic building in downtown Milwaukee. Very busy, our wait staff was ok. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Food was good, not as good as I remember, but still good. Onsite parking was a plus. Very chilly inside, wished I brought a sweater.
Marcel Nienhuis
Oldest restaurant in Milwaukee. It has a historic rustic feel. Entree prices are a little steep but the food is good. The jumbo pretzel appetizer was a highlight.
عبدالله الدش
Visited Maders for a wonderful dinner with a group of friends. We stayed in Milwaukee for a pre-holiday weekend and this was on our list for dinner. Have always had great food here and again we were not disappointed - food was great, we had a wonderful server, I believe her name was Holly ! She made the evening that much more enjoyable with her knowledge of the menu, and her great personality ! Look forward to our next visit back.
mdnoman haoladar
I didn’t have high expectations for the touristy German thing, but the food was very good. Not only the wurst and the sauerbraten, but I had the duck which was among the best, simply prepared duck dishes I can remember eating at a restaurant in the U.S.. Service and decor were on the mark as well.
Mark Ellifson
Meet with friends to try Mader's. It was absolutely mind blowing. You felt like you were transported to a German beerhall. The food was amazing! From the appetizers we had to the main course. Just all aorund pleasant time
Molly “Applesauce” P.
Heard a lot about this place on cable t.v. so made it a destination on a recent trip. Food was good, and priced at the point we expected. We ordered items that weren't too far out of our knowledge base (which didn't have to be translated for us) and were pleased.
Doug Ziegler
Had lunch for 4. The only beer drinker was very happy with their choice, Weihenstephan Korbinian. The sauerbraten was the best of our food choices. The reuben rolls are very good, although maybe could be larger. The goulash was good and wiener schnitzel also was. The one disappointment was the Bavarian platter, very bland wursts other than the Kassler Ripchen, which was very good. The desserts were an excellent finish to the meal. The bread pudding and Black forest cake are both larger than the sample tray shows and are very good.
Chris Fellure
That’s a cultural experience! I recommend the pretzel, the mushroom and beef strudel, and the Apple streusel! Oh, and Will Ferrel’s headshot!
Jason Duncan
Oh my. The dinner for two had 4 main course meals. Excellent red cabbage and saurkraut. The meat is so tender The Rusty swords are not used that adorn the walls. Make an excuse to use the restroom so you can see all the artifacts and stained glass.
Jennifer Franco
Fun for a one time experience. We went after the Pabst tour. Drank out of boots, got a German Sampler, and some Reuben Rolls Probably won't be back, it's better days are behind it. Kids thought the knights armor was cool.
Richard Hendrix
I don't know if I've ever had this good of food even while living in Germany.
It puts Burghoff's in Chicago to shame.
The portions are very large. You could literally split a plate and be full.
Malinda Moore
This is a one of a kind restaurant. I highly suggest getting the Tour of Germany. There is more than enough food for 2 or even a family of 4 if you're like me and ordered soup and dessert at the end.
jeffrey dombro
One of a kind old style German Restaurant. Great German beer selection and a really good menu of German food. Definitely a destination restaurant. Well worth a visit.
Scott Biggar
I've heard folks say this is the best German Restaurant in the country. I haven't been to them all so I can't confirm but it is the best of the dozens in the Midwest that I've been to
Roxana Velasco
First time trying German food... Actually went inside this restaurant with no real knowledge of what we were getting into other than being hungry.... Lol The first plate is a German sampler. Would have liked if waitresses would have explained the meal but it appears everyone could do different pairing. First time seeing a place serving pretzel bread. Very warm and delicious. The mac and cheese was completely different than what I've had... Took me several bites to get used to the taste. I had actually order the mac and cheese because I couldn't understand the menu and it felt more "common" lol Husband ordered blue crab. Glad they have a kids menu... Kiddo would have complained all night long... Their chicken off kids menu was pretty crisp and delicious. The apple strudel was A.MA.Zing!!! :) Definitely a place husband and I are wanting to try again. Really good overall. The service was great. Very friendly and attentive.
John Bacelis
A beautiful venue with lots of seating. Something new to see around each corner. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was ok. I had the spatzle. It was alright but I wasn't blown away. My companions ate other dishes and seemed to really enjoy them (bratwurst).
patricia schlagel
Totally classic German dining. May you continue serving fine German cuisine with greay beer selections. We appreciated the server's suggestions.
Melinda P
I have had some German food before and it wasnt my favorite type, but after coming here, I have never had German food before. We started with the Bavarian & pretzel, then ordered the Oxtail soup and Liver dumpling soup, both outstanding. We split the Veal and King Crab Schnitzel. The food was really good. Nothing like the German food I have had. This place is on my list to come back, when I come back to Milwaukee. Definitely a place you have to go to.
Terry
I was a guest for Mother's Day Brunch with my family. It was absolutely lovely. Everything was delicious. The service was impeccable. Just altogether a lovely experience.
Kelli M
The enterior is lovely and will make you feel like your not in this country. Our waiter was just okay, there were a few poor service spots. But the valet was nice, and the host was kind and the food was great. We were concerned about the dress code and went with business casual. We were sad to see some adult men in tank tops like they came from the gym. Not the restaurants fault, just a side note if your wondering about dress code. Overall we were happy with Mader's, but the table service could have been a little better.
Carl Kahle
Had a great time at Mader's. The decor makes you feel like you are in Germany, but it isn't quite as noisy as a German beer hall.
The food and beer was excellent as well as the service. Our waiter was enthusiastic and gave good recommendations; I had the sampler and finished every last bite!
Carole Sorensen
Authentic German food in a traditional German setting! The entire experience was phenomenal. The staff, the food, the beer, and desserts.
Rouladen is one of my favorite German meals and it’s hard to find. Very well done Maders. I hope you can continue to keep your doors open during this challenging time!
Rick Dehring
I have been going to Mader's for over 40 years. Aside from wonderful German dinners consider these bonuses: Free parking in a crowded DT location, Excellent import drafts and good apps at the Knights Bar, The incredible celebrity photo bathroom walk and one of the few remaining classic German restaurants left in the Milwaukee area.
Chris Uhles
Being born in Germany, and having many years of authentic German food...this place is as good as being in Munich (prices would be a little less in The motherland, but...) service is amazing, the beers are cold, and their food is to die for! Treat yourself to either the German sampler or my fav the Rouladen!
Jack Crawford
Great authentic German Food. Bavarian Plate
Ольга Демидова
We’ve been there for a corporate brunch.
The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, with lots of interesting details. Makes feel yourself like in Medieval Germany.
The staff was friendly but maybe we just didn’t have enough waiters for all the guests. We had to spend a lot of time with dirty plates.
They serve perfect strudel for dessert but the portion is really small. Unfortunately, the main course was disappointing. My schnitzel has nothing is common with real schnitzels, just breaded meat. Going to such a restaurant you expect the food to be served in some original and beautiful way, but here you just get it like from the cafeteria.
Wendell Gan
Great environment and decor. Food is excellent German selection. The pretzel bread that is provided is wonderful. Good portions. Delicious authentic food. Large selection of German beers served in a nice mug which is available for purchase as well. In addition steins are for sale. Definitely a place for celebrating or meetings. Meals range from $20-50.
Mitchell Schaub
Mader’s is a Milwaukee tradition, it is considered one of the top German restaurants outside of Germany. The experience begins as you step through the door into the Germany of legend: exquisite woodwork, swords and steins on every wall, servers in dirndls and lederhosen, and the delightful traditional music. The Knight’s bar offers various German and German-style beers in traditional steins or even large boot glasses. Wine list is superb and varied. Service is excellent, kitchen may not be the fastest, but the food is worth the wait. Try the pork shank, or the popular German sampler. Desserts are satisfactory if not spectacular.
Andy Cheng
Excellent German food and beers. We had the pork shank and the meat literally falls off the bone. The sauerkraut was outstanding and don’t forget to order Belgium beer with 9% alcohol level

After receiving their email last week regarding their New Year's Eve specials of Rack of elk entree, and bee sting cake dessert, I knew my New Year's Eve plans had been made.
Dinner started off with a nice bowl of French Onion Soup. Very savory with all the components of a good French Onion Soup. I appreciated that its' size was not enormous, just enough for a good starter.
The elk was beautifully plated on a bed of spaetzle that had roasted carrots and wild mushrooms garnished with BlackBerry brandy foam. While the elk was properly cooked to a medium rare, the inherent muscular nature of the elk made a sharp knife a necessity. The true genius was in the spaetzle/carrot/mushroom base. It caught the taste of the elk and brandy foam.
Dessert was very good. Having never had bee sting cake before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm sure Maders was a perfect representation. Massive amounts of nuts and honey were represented.
It was a dinner fitting for bringing in a new decade!!!!
Jen
Wonderful food and lots to look at.
Daryl Nitz
Mader's carries a lot of memories for me. I think I first came here as a kid with my parents. Their Thanksgiving, and other holiday buffets are outstanding.
My recent visit was disappointing. I ate in the bar. Service was slow. The food dry, cool to temperature, pricey for what you get. French Onion soup is $10. The croutons inside stale and tough. The schnitzel had a great breading, but needed to be cut with a knife. The beef had great sauce but was tough. Usually it's tender and moist. No bread was served in the bar. It was a lackluster experience.
My previous memories are so strong with this restaurant. Never had a bad experience previously, but it will be awhile before I return.
Kelly Smith
Great food and friendly service. Ate here right after CoVid lockdown restrictions were lifted and we were impressed with the quality of everything given that they had just reopened, it was lunch, and not that many people were there. Many restaurants would slack on service and food quality under such circumstances. We felt it lived up to the hype. The beer was cold and delicious, and our food was fantastic. Would definitely return!
Kevin Foley
An exceptional quality restaurant. Wonderful atmospere, very efficient and attentive service plus great food offerings all add up to a very nice experience.
Marlena Karwowski
One of the oldest restaurants in Milwaukee. Traditional and elegant German place. Spaten Octoberfest delicious as always. Schnitzel was yummy as well.
Mike Melendrez
Bottom line. You just have to come here. They don't make old school places like this anymore. As I walk through the place the first thing that came to mind was the word cavernous and it definitely felt like I was in a place in Germany. Lots of great German beer and the food is top-notch. Wait did I mention the service.. fantastic!
Will Langston
Food was good, we split some platters and had potato pancakes and a meat and cheese board. The board was very generous. There’s parking by the restaurant with a really amazing valet. The Bavarian Platter is the pick for sausage lovers, sauerkraut was great.
Elliott Ng
Authentic German food surrounded by antique artifacts from Germanic culture. My son had Weiner schnitzel, Kasseler Rippchen, and Rheinischer sauerbraten with potato dumpling, sauerkraut and red cabbage. I had a delicious chicken schnitzel with Black Forest mushroom sauce and spatzle. Wow, that and a pint of Weihenstephan Vitus (I think) made for an amazingly authentic German meal! And we sat at the same table Pres. Gerald Ford did in 1976.
L.J. Bailey
Historic restaurant with great stories and authentic German food. Sunday brunch is all you can eat, inclusive of bottomless mimosas, and the staff is attentive. There is also more than one vegetarian option. Highly recommended.
Diane S Crawley
Famous Milwaukee German restaurant that is so worth the stop.
Our son had been there before and made reservations (highly recommended) and knew the ropes. We ordered two appetizers and two meals for the three of us.
Though we were there at a busy time, Saturday night, we had excellent service.
We ordered pretzel and beer cheese and waitress brought us extra bread because it comes with lots of yummy cheese.
All the meals were massive. We were on a vacation, so we had no where to bring leftovers. If you visit, plan accordingly.
I don't think there's a bad item on their menu. Beers were chilled. I personally am fussy and like ice cold beer, but the family was happy with theirs.
If you are visiting Milwaukee be sure to include this in your plans.
John K
I will say the beer was perfect. Not to cold and not lukewarm. I had a octoberfest beer and then a lager. Excellent German beer and I could have stayed even longer if I hadn't been so full. The German music was delightful as well. My only problem was the price on everything. Pork shank and kraut was $38 and I've been in German restaurants all over and although it was good, I will say I've had similar meals at half the price. I wanted an appetizer but the potato pancakes at $11 was a little pricey. Altogether I spent $70 some dollars for dinner and though I don't regret it I can't run back there. They also need to add some options to the menu. How about some blood sausage.
natasha gregory
We had Tay as our server and she was the best... we didn’t want for nothing!! The food was amazing ... really love German Cuisine made right! I had the Wiener schnitzel Jager style with the mushroom gravy, Spaetzle was fluffy and the red cabbage sooo tender and sweet... onion soup to die for and their potato pancakes were freaking amazing ... definitely love this place !!
Rob White
Had a great visit here. Food was awesome. You should definitely take time to get by here if you're in Milwaukee. FYI - Go for the pork shank. Fantastic!
kelly mathews
The food was beyond fantastic, the service however was not up to par as the food. I mean the server was good but slow at times. Other then that everything was so good.
Mary Baranowski
No disrespect, German food just isn't my thing. I had a Brussel Sprout side dish that was great! I would order it again if I have the opportunity. Our waitress was wonderful, wish I could remember her name to mention her great service.
Deborah Roelandts
Had lunch yesterday after going on a cruise on the Milwaukee River. Our waitress was so attentive and service was impeccable. Food was excellent and decor was amazing.
A perfect dining experience for our party of six
Candace Moore
The best restaurant in Milwaukee. We went twice on a weekend visit. The food is beyond phenomenal and authentically German. The atmosphere is inviting, comfortable, and it's cool to see all of the celebs that have stopped by on the wall on the way to the restroom. The waiter on the bartender side was one the most professional, friendly, and attentive waiters I've ever come across. I recommend this as a must do in Milwaukee.
Joel V
Great place for authentic German food. The old world theme is absolutely beautiful!
Robin S
Wonderful! We went for lunch and will most def be back for dinner. The decor is outstanding. The service was prompt. The food was delicious and prepared well.
Art Mack
service was great. food was excellent, sauerkraut and the red cabbage reminded me of what gram used to make from scratch (I don't recall ever saying that about any restaurant). if you are in the mood for German food or want to try it. I would definitely recommend trying this place.
Heather Brentlinger
Great atmosphere. The beers were amazing will definitely go back.
Loretta Korba
Great atmosphere, great drink and delicious food! A must try while in Milwaukee!
Claudia Rinaldi
This is the best German food in the country. We live in WI from 2000 to 2004 and we just came back to have the amazing food we remembers. It beats any German food in Boston, Miami, Orlando, etc. No body compares!!! Our waitress, the ambiance, services were also great. It's history is alive.
Ari Yeom
The food is pretty authentic. The vibe was awesome. The people are friendly. What more can I ask of a restaurant?
Katie Steckly
Mader's was a very neat experience. If you are looking for something different than the typical burger and fries this is the place for you. The German food is delicious and make sure you save room for dessert
Rick Egan
One of the places that you hear you "have to go" in Milwaukee. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about, and our service was sub par. Jacob never asked how our meal was, or if he could get us dessert. He never tried to upsell anything or recommend anything. This place lives off of its reputation and is only okay.
MOE Saadi
This place is awesome
It’s like a Museum with great food ,
We tried several dishes and we just loved them all.
Also, our server “Becky” was amazing
Howell D
Best German food not in Germany the platters are great if you want some of everything but the lamb shank is to die for.
David Nowak
As always, the food was amazing! Service was great as well! Great spot for celebrating special occasions. I particularly love all the history in the restaurant to explore!
dave warner
Schnitzel is outstanding! Awesome armour and ambiance. Perfect for a great German meal!
Christopher Hess
My mother and father loved this restaurant so much. I loved going here as a kid and still do. A Bavarian wonderland filled with great memories and even better food.
Alicia Hernandez
Great food! Great theming! Will definitely be back!
Mabel Thng
You have to dine at this place if you are in Milwaukee ! It’s so classic and apparently a lot of celebrities have dined there as well, dating all the way back to the Three Stooges. Pretty cool German spot with a variety of beer options that kept my friend really happy. Also they had a buffet for Christmas and the food variety was insane. Loved it and will be back at some point!
Bradley DeGarmo
The jumbo pretzel is all I needed in my day. It is huge which typically means it's a novelty that doesn't taste good but Maders has perfected the pretzel and just wanted to make it an extra large one. I recommend it for a good afternoon snack for 3-4 people.
Colleen O'Malley-Campbell
Excellent as always! Nice crowd for an early Sunday lunch. Food came HOT and fresh. Excellent potatoe pancakes and schnitzel. Just a fun, classic Milwaukee establishment.
Michael Vondracek
Beautiful restaurant. It is pricy. I had the Hungarian goulash and it was very good. You can get 2 liter beers there.
Mark Imming
This was a beautiful restaurant to visit and very authentic. The German beer selection was wonderful and the food was prepared wonderfully and tasted great! I can see why many celebrities come to this restaurant to enjoy the experience.
Frank Arev
Great old world feel with German cuisine. Really can't go wrong with any dish. Pick your protein and enjoy!
Melissa Datre
Mader's Restaurant gets all high marks. Authentic German atmosphere, savory meals, and don't forget the Apple Strudel a la mode!
Michael Urban
Oh my. This place has a wonderful Old World, traditional, German ambiance. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted with happy people, and splendid decor. There are many German beers to choose from. They will even help you pair your meal with the best brew. I had the Bavarian Platter. It did not disappoint.
Carl Wotowis
Just had a fabulous dinner at Maders. Our server Jackie was very friendly and knowledgeable. She contributed to our very enjoyable experience. Food was excellent and the atmosphere placed you in old Germany. We had the pleasure of meeting the owners daughter who thanked us for coming in for dinner. Can you believe that in today's society? Thank YOU Maders for keeping this German tradition alive. Milwaukee - please be sure to frequent your treasures, if you don't they'll fade away.
Charlene Constantino
Very nice place to eat dinner at. It's nice change from regular restaurants. Food was great, served in a timely manner and our server was nice. We didn't really know the german names of the drinks and the food and she explained it to us patiently, recommending which ones are good. This place has lots of history too, you'll read them on the walls when you go to the bathroom. Interesting things to know. This place has also been visited by many celebrities which you'll see a list of when you go in. I'd keep going back here for nice dinners if I had the money!
Ben Gump
Amazing German food, great location and setting. They had a last minute opening for eight and I'm glad we found this place! Thank you
Collin Werner
Great selection of German beer and the food was phenomenal!
Damian Garcia
Just kinda fell into this place but had a good time!. I ordered the boot thinking the big one "Das Boot" was gonna come. Server didnt either really try to sell it or wasn't sure on the upselling. Ethier way I had the small boot then got the 2L. Boot! It was fun drinking it! Had a blast will go back with Brother to have our own Beerfest!
Eric Anders
Outstanding authentic German food, and rustic, comfortable ambiance. Add this nearly 120 yr old restaurant to your list!
360BASE
One of the best restaurants transports you to the Middle Ages and to the game of thrones, the service was very good, despite the fact that we made a mistake with what we ordered, they were very kind to change it, the best service
Genevieve Hebeka
Great service at lunch. Huge portions. Waiter could explain all the varieties of the meats we were served. Lots and lots of good options.Atmosphere is intriguing, almost like a museum if you look at everything. Don't miss the hall of fame; it's a fun gallery of photos.
Shannon Valencia
Violet and I went to Mader's Restaurant in Milwaukee. We will definitely return to this establishment. We absolutely loved the decor, the traditional outfits the staff wore, the service, and the food. It was such a fun experience and well worth the money.
Jim Robertson
While in Milwaukee you must try this restaurant for authentic German fare. The 100 year "old fashion" was terrific.
Kayla Potter
The Thanksgiving dinner buffet was incredible!! The staff were so friendly and it's a beautiful restaurant. Everything was wonderful!
Timothy Letz
This place has some very cool decor. The staff wears German inspired outfits, and the swords and armor on display are awesome.
debra castro
Delicious food and a beautiful place to dine.
Sergey Demidov
Well, the impression varies greatly depending on the expectations, right?
This time I've had a huge difference, and it wasn't in favor of the place.
After checking recent reviews, restaurant interior photos and overall fame around the area, we decided to arrange our corporate dinner at Mader's.
First of all, I didn't really like the requirement to come up with specific meal preferences for every guest in advance if there are more than 25 people expected. Okay, rules are rules, but why ask every single participant again and still make us wait for food?
Even before that there were a lot of hiccups. Only one server worked on drinks for 26 people, and it predictably took a while. Others couldn't even choose as only three menus were distributed.
Finally, the food. It's decent at most. Dressing for the vegetable salad is plain disgusting, portions are quite small, and these people simply don't know how to cook schnitzel.
Beer is also below average on taste and quite expensive, around $8 per pint.
The only positive note was strudel for dessert, everyone really liked it. The interior is cool indeed, but it doesn't justify price tag and lack of decent cuisine.
Erik Goes
We arrived for a 1:30pm lunch reservation which we made through OpenTable, and were welcomed with complimentary valet, and a very pleasant front of house. The atmosphere is wonderful, lots of very interesting decor including weapons, art, stained glass and more. The lighting is excellent as well. The waiters wear authentic costumes, and the food is authentic and absolutely delicious. I can highly recommend coming here if you are in the area!
Larry Jastper
What a classic German restaurant...awesome menu...great staff...great beer selection.. awesome gift shop...great antiques...old school all day every day...this place is awesome. We had a soft pretzel the size of a Christmas wreath for an appetizer...take a pic in the big chair....
Andres Mendoza
Excellent place, great experience with German culture and gourmet.
Zach Tichelaar
Pictures aren’t going to do the pork shank it’s dues. The pork is succulent, delicate and all around delicious. The sweet red cabbage plays beautifully with the rich pork. The atmosphere makes me feel like like I’m in the 1900’s and I rode up in a horse and carriage (it’s a good thing). If you’re a local and haven’t been here, shame on you. If you’re from out of town, make this your top priority stop.
becky raderstorf
We had such a great time! The food was awesome! Loved the atmosphere
Traveling True-B (soaringty360photosdotcom)
Great food, Great Beer Selection & the history here is amazing. Walk through the hallways, look at the artifacts. I love the 3 different sizes of beer glasses. I wanted to try the boot, but I would of never made it home.
Joey Joe Joe Jr Shabadoo
Brought my father, who was born near Munich, here for his birthday. He loved it. The service was fantastic, the food was even better. Great selection of beers on tap and in bottles and make sure you get the apple strudel and finish the meal with an Underberg. You won't be disappointed!
Peter Richter
Delicious traditional German food. All the rest have closed. This is the last, great German restaurant in the Midwest. The only other great one I know of is The Ambry in Fort Lauderdale. None are left in Chicago. So sad.
Bethany Reinsch
We have attended both Maders Thanksgiving and Mothers day brunch along with several other miscellaneous dinners. Never walked away unhappy. The food is of course delicious, but they offer something many other restaurants don't anymore. Which is phenomenal service. Valet parking, friendly hosts, and knowledgeable bar and serving staff. It's a Milwaukee must if you're visiting!
Dee Page
The food, atmosphere and service was more than expected. This place has been in business since 1920. It was a beautiful surrounding to be in. Excellent food
Marc Spangler
Amazing German food, reminded me of growing up in Germany.
Steve Fredriksson
Although I have come here numerous times over the years, this was my wife's first time here. She was not disappointed!
From the time you meet the valet who parks your car (and keeps an eye on it in their lot) to when you meet the greeter/host, you know you're in for a treat. The building definitely a throwback (it is a 100+ year old restaurant), but it is gorgeous. Great bar. Unbelievable accoutrements, art and woodcarvings, super nice people.
We had an early supper and were served (very well) by Will. Great waiter with an upbeat attitude and excellent timing.
We started with Mader's brussels sprout appetizer (unbelievably good) and French onion soupalong with some warm pretzel bread. Truly great.
My wife had wiener schnitzel (actual veal, which was nice), and I had the German sampler. This was a huge plate of joy. Very good.
We closed with a huge slice of German chocolate cake. Very good.
These guys know what they're doing. This is stick-to-your-ribs German "soul" food. You will not walk away hungry. That said, if you are fortunate enough to have Will as your server, he'll make a wonderful meal that much better.
Thank you for a lovely supper!
Jordan Marshall
You walk in and it smells like your grandmas dinner on a holiday. Then you get the same feeling for taste. I understand the hype, it’s a great dinner experience when in Milwaukee. Breweries may be the more common highlight when touring Milwaukee but Mader’s is arguably the #1 desired restaurant to try when you do come visit
Margaret Gotsch
If you visit Milwaukee and haven't been to Mader's, you're missing out. It's a must go, and a choice selection. Not your everyday eatery, but for the right occasion, the price is more than worth it. Get the pork shank! And don't forget to sit in the big chair. Ask about renting the upstairs. My brother had his rehearsal dinner here and they did a smashing job!
Jason Neal
Great Food and large portions. Place was packed and were able to get a seat in the bar area. You gotta go if you're in Milwaukee.
Arcadiac
The service was amazing. Hands down the best I've ever received. Food was amazing and the history in the place is unbeatable.
Maximilian Stottmeister
Pretty authentic. Almost like home in Germany. Food was good. As good as it gets in the US, when it comes to German food.
ahsc3fe
I've been to Germany it is fantastic. Now I've been to Germany IN Wisconsin and it is just as fantastic! Great food and better bier!
Jim Krueger
Great lunch stop! Old world classics. Totally unique.
utsav roy
We stopped on our way from UP to Chicago. This place is all about good vibes, great atmosphere and amazing food and beer. Everyone is super friendly and dressed authentic. You won't regret this place.
Larissa G
First off You have to go here!!!!!!!!!! This place is an experience and a half!!! The place is decorated down with the most unique European decor, the waiters are in leader hosens, the girls in german dresses, there are beautiful carvings on the walls, and swords and such. We sat at john F Kennedy's table and each table famous people have sat at and they have signed portraits. You want to plan 3 hours here just to look around at everything and to enjoy the food. The food is so authentic real German food, the best in the Midwest I have food. Food is on the pricier side $30 a plate, and $20 for pretzels, but it does come with complementary pretzel bread that is devine. I got the chicken snizzel, and hubby got one of the 5 piece sample platers. I wished we had room for desert so start with that first! The food is so good. Go for both the food and the experience, you won't be disappointed, it is so one of a kind! The staff was amazing! They have parking there you pay $5-$10 and can walk around the city after dinner. I really enjoyed this place and have never found another place like it in the USA.
Joachim Pang
Super cool old school German restaurant. The food combined with the ambiance and service makes this place a must visit location.
Clinton Fitch
Excellent German food in a historic setting. The food here is excellent and well prepared. They also have an extensive wine and drinks list to accompany your meal. Be sure to take a look at the desert tray!
Angelena Pocalypse
Love this place. It's like flying to Germany for lunch. Great service. Great food.
Joshua Fager
Love this place! Excellent German fare, and beautiful atmosphere! Amazing German beers on draft as well!
Rich R
I had the pork shank and my wife had the wienerschnitzel with mushroom sauce. Both were fantastic!
Scott Chauncey
Authentic and delicious food. Nice people. Good drinks. Highly recommended!
P J Stephens
The Tour of Germany 🇩🇪 plater was best I have ever eaten
Alex Gunther
The best German food I've had outside of my Oma and Opa's house. Must go.
Amy Lyons
A very unique restaurant with good servers and a great atmosphere! Delicious beer and food as well.
Tony Hoty
We stopped in when passing through town after we saw the good reviews and amazing images of the decor online. It was very busy yet the staff was very accommodating. We received exceptional service from our service our server Miles. His passion for the establishment is evident in all that he does. Miles attention to detail in an effort to make our experience as positive as possible was quite remarkable. I would recommend this venue to anyone in search of a unique and delicious dining experience!
Daniel Jump
Fun place, friendly staff. Liver soup was great, the sampler meal was a little dry.
Don Scifres
Mader's offers the same wonderful food, beverages, and service across the decades. I dined there with a large contingent in April 2022 and it was just as good as my first Mader's dining experience with my family in Summer 2005. Delicious German food offerings and a wide assortment of beers and wines. I highly recommend Mader's the next time you are dining in Downtown Milwaukee.
Todd Barta
Excellent German food with excellent service. Nice atmosphere. Great for a special occasion. Dress is causal to more formal. We wore jeans and Packer gear before a game and were not out of place. Plenty of Bucks gear before a night game as well.
David Kneib
Had a wonderful dinner on New Year's Eve at Mader's. It had been years since we were last there. My wife had the salmon and I had the duck chambord. Both were exceptional. The dessert and appetizers were also fantastic. The delicious food combined with the excellent service means we will soon be back!
tom ropel
This was by far the best dinning experience I have had in a long time. The server we had was fantastic and the food was out of this world. Between the ambiance and the food I can't imagine a better donning experience when it comes to themed dinning.
Melissa
Maders 25 years ago was Excellent. Today; not so much. My Schnitzel (Sautéed pork tenderloin schnitzel) was a very dry pork chop, very little beurre blanc sauce was served and was used on the chop and spatzel, but still dry chops. The Asparagus was a bit stalky, tuff on the bottom.
The Scallops were superb, cooked to perfection moist and seared on the outside I love the flavor.
Awilda Almestica Rosario Nmn (Awi)
Outstanding German Food. Friendly staff, excellent plates and prices.
Rodney Moore
The Germany sampler for 2 was fantastic. Wait staff very helpful and polite. We wish we could come eat here more often. But the drive from Kansas is just too far.
Kat Spofford
Really good service, very authentic, loved the Weiner Schnitzel, and sauerkraut.
Jennifer D
Delicious sauerbraten and spaetzel. Loved the ambiance, since I couldn’t make Octoberfest this year!
Chip Brown
Wonderful service and food. My wife and I shared appetizers for lunch and it was more than enough. Plus apple strudel with ice cream for dessert. Highly recommended.
Hannah Olson
Amazing. Excellent food. Also they have private valet parking.
Tom Brown
The food and atmosphere are great! The staff is professional and the prices are extremely reasonable. Authentic German food. I could almost believe my Grandmother cooked my meal. I haven’t had German potato dumplings, potato pancakes, spaztle, or Wienerschnitzel like this for decades. I will be back. Don’t miss the strudel.
Nightmare before Crafts
Nice atmosphere, and good food. We were seated in the bar area, which was kind of loud. I would have preferred the restaurant side where it was quite since we were there for our anniversary. The server we had must have been new because she had to ask about how to use a coupon I had, plus she forgot what my husband ordered and never got my beer cheese sauce to go with my main course. I had wanted a mini beer boot but didn't want to wait half an hour for our server to remember to get it. I'm glad we gave it a try but we don't have the desire to go back any time soon. Also they advertise that workers wear authentic German clothing and I only saw 3, maybe 4 people dressed as such. Our server was wearing a black jumpsuit with gold pin strips, not what we were looking for.
Michael C
Fabulous food and helpful, attentive staff.
Chris Herrera
Awesome service, clean environment, beautiful inside and out. Our Waitress, Haley, was WONDERFUL!! The cuisine was soooooo delicious. The decora was beautiful to where I needed to take pictures. The Valet personnel was very nice and polite. My Fiance and I will definitely go back and try a different dish. Dont forget to buy a souvenir on your way out. The have all kinds of great gifts for yourself or for early Christmas presents for your loved ones. The best present is to take them to Maders and enjoy a wonderful dining experience. One that keeps you coming back for more.
Amanda McFarland
Just stopped in to get one of their giant pretzels to go. The thing is HUGE! Definitely would love to come back and try some of the other food.
Patrick Rafalski
There is a free valet service. The wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable. A wonderful selection of beer. The pork shank is every bit as good as advertised.
Jim Gaulke
Our Son and Daughter in Law take Us here at least once a year. We Really enjoy it. The Staff is Rrally tuned in to anything You need. I am looking forward to Our next visit there and wouldn't hesitate to give You a Good review.
Kimberly Peters
What a Great time! Very German themed and tasting. Expensive, but Highly recommend.
JJ Setaro
Amazing atmosphere with authentic German food. Everything in the restaurant is authentic from the weapons to the food. Would absolutely recommend if you're in the area.
Cory Windorff
Milwaukee standard for (Bavarian) German food. Old history present along with stereotypical German decor. Lots of great things to see besides the great food.
James Cornetta
I must eat here anytime I get to Milwaukee!! One of my favorite places! I get the Sauerbraten and it is the closest I've found to my mom's recipe.
Rebecca Abbett
Wow! Food, staff, atmosphere 👍👍
Eric Chasco
Went here many times when I was living in Milwaukee, love the food and atmosphere.
R J Pfister
Great atmosphere, service, food deserts, seating, handicapped entrance and bathrooms. LOVED IT
Devin Fisher
It was ok. When your menu starts with name dropping the celebrities that have visited, you know that food and flavor aren’t the priority.
Tracy Halter
The service has gotten very slow! We always go for Christmas eve dinner and the past 2 years it has taken 2 hours or longer to eat. Today our server didn't greet us until we had been sitting for 35 minutes. And then we were just constantly waiting for everything. The food is great though. A+ for food quality. F for service.
Anthony Cruz
Had the pleasure of meeting the manager after a mix up with our order. She ensured that our experience was memorable. The food was good and everyone there seemed to be more than willing to talk about the history of the establishment and the items on display.
Jo-Anne Mason
Lunch was excellent. Very authentic German food in a classic setting. Nice German beer selection. We found it on s walk glad we did.
BETSY GRANGER
Great spot! Service was wonderful, the history is top notch and food was delicious
Delaney
Unique dining experience. Valet parking and come prepared, the bill will not be cheap. Loved the waitresses attire. Originally came to have the "boot beer glass" but unfortunately they weren't available.
Todd Rademacher
Absolutely the best food in Milwaukee. A must every time we are in town. Never a bad experience.
Naked Coyote
Justin was a fantastic server! Came to Milwaukee for a convention and found this place on a whim, and gave it a shot. It was fantastic! Best German chocolate cake I have ever had hands down!!! Service was on point all night! Justin was extremely cool and made SOLID recommendations too! I got the 16oz ribeye with starters being the giant pretzel and the Ruben rolls. I recommend all of it! Same with the chocolate cake!
I will be back!
Natalie Seidenkranz
Tried the beer cheese with pretzel crostinis and then the pork shank. Pork was very tender. Service was good considering our large group.
Ramona Zubaidi
Food was just ok. Not even that, really. Overpriced. When we were looking for a restaurant in Milwaukee, we chose Mader's. Didn't realize it was a celebrity place. Choose something else.
Irsan S
Trying the most famous Giant Pretzel in the house
Will comeback again later
Must visit and try them
Nicolette
Great food. The old fashion wasn’t my favorite but it is a great spot to eat.
Sean O'Neill
First the inside and decor is amazing. Just to look at the place is an experience. The stained glass, the wood, very cool. But it all comes down to the food and I found it subpar given the prices. We have the meat and cheese tray for an app and it looked like stuff you could get from Oscar Meyer or Kraft. Most of the meat and cheese was flat like cold cuts and looked store bought and didn't taste much different. Old Trapper (from the grocery store) makes a better smoked sausage. Seriously. The entrée was the popular German sampler and nothing stuck out as very imaginative or different. Couple uncured ham slices, couple slices of mediocre post roast with almonds. The encrusted veal was as good as stuff I've had on buffets. The only thing that did kind of stick out was the sauerkraut and red cabbage. Those seemed homemade. Good, but NOT worth the prices charged
Richard Price
First off, ask for Amelia. She was a very outstanding server. She was so good that I spoke to her manager and sang her praises. As for the food I had the sauerbraten and could not have been more pleased. For dessert I tried the Black Forest cake. It was a generous slice and tasted delicious. The German decor was great as were the many plaques of celebrities who had visited and dined there. My brother noticed Laurel and Hardy while I noticed John Cleese.
Mike Horn
The buffet was very good and the service was excellent. Tons of authentic options and the restaurant looked the part! Definitely check them out if you're visiting.
Michael Mack
Great authentic German food, beer and atmosphere. A Milwaukee institution. Great for any occasion. However, not a particularly great choice if you have small children.
Rohan Tikmany
Really good atmosphere amazing selection of beers and German fare. Food is very rich and meat heavy but also has decent lighter fare. I'd highly suggest the deserts and specially the Black Forrest Cake !
Kelly Koble
Everything was great! From the smiling valet to our attentive and friendly wait staff, (Amelia). We enjoyed delicious appatizers, cocktails, lunch and dessert. Maders provided the perfect lace for our family birthday celebration.
james fischer
The food is amazing! Service was a little slow but friendly and polite! The wait was worth it!
Kimberly Jackson
The food there is amazing. Definitely need to go back.
Visiting the city. Glad we stopped.
Thomas Vargo
I live in a town outside of Chicago and saw this place on tv. I'm very glad to have dined here and when I get back will want to go here again. Our server was kind polite, made suggestions but was in no way pushy. I absolutely loved the decor and enjoyed seeing some of the celebrities that have dined here. The food was some I've not tried and will eat it again. To the owners you can feel proud your establishment is outstanding
John Truempy
There is a reason this place was rattled best ethnic restaurant more then once. Because it was great!!! Great service great food great beer.
Harls T Barkley
Getting seated was a little slow despite having made a reservation and the bartender was more concerned with talking with his friends at the bar rather than making my drink. However, our server was very good and the food was phenomenal. I was afraid my picky eaters wouldn't like it, but everyone chowed down heartily.
Marie
Giant pretzel was amazing. It's $16 but 5 people were able to share it. So good!!
adrianna Nash
The food ,service atmosphere is great. Most good items are on the pricey side
Carolyn Madaus
Such a treat! Birthday dinner for my daughter. We had dinner on a Friday night. The pretzel was huge!!! All 5 of us were in Heaven with the scrumptious meals. We also thoroughly loved the apple strudel and German Chocolate Cake. Wonderful staff! Highly recommend!
Therese Davis
Wow, sat at the cool vintage bar, they had German beers on tap and make a great old fashioned! I had the roasted veggie spaetzl that was so good I tried to recreate it at home.
Joe S.
Top notch! Very rich German cuisine in a quiet, tucked away setting.
Dave Hofer
Food was delicious. Our waitress was really nice. At first I thought I was massively underdressed but then I saw the staff is made to wear faux-German garb and heard the polka music playing quietly in the background and decided I was fine. Classic!!
Sue Longson
Several folks highly recommended this restaurant and it didn't let us down! The food was beyond fabulous! We got the dinner for two, which was a sampler platter. Everything was incredibly tasty especially the schnitzel. The service was great, as well. I highly recommend that this place.
Richard Potter
All 5 of us tried something different for our main entrees, and we each really enjoyed them. I had the Beef and Mushroom Strudel, which is something I've never seen or tried before, but I am ready glad I trusted my server's advice in doing so. My son also loved his lamb shank, which too is not found often on German menus. My wife and father in-law loved the variety of the Rhine Sampler and German Sampler, both of which come with pork Wiener Schnitzel, which may be upgraded to veal. The beef goulash in the Rhine Sampler was fork tender and succulent. The beef Sauerbraten in the German Sampler was equally so. We had no room for dessert, as we started our meal sharing a giant warmed and salty pretzel with yummy beer cheese sauce and tangy German mustard to dip. Lastly, reservations are a must, unless you are a party of one or two and are willing to sit at the large Knight's Bar adjacent to the restaurant, serving the same menu items. Free off-street valet parking makes for a hassle free experience as well. Highly recommended!, especially for special occasions, such as my wife's parents' 60th anniversary!
John Pires
Great German food and style. I go to Mader's several times a year and have never been disappointed in any aspect. It is technically on the expensive side for Milwaukee but it's certainly worth the money.
There is also a very nice bar area that's great for having just a couple of drinks and/or appetizers.
Darren Kress
Wonderful building and interior. Oxtail soup was very good and tasted of barley although could have used more oxtail. Wiener Schnitzel was pretty good. Tour of Germany easily served 1 adult and 3 teens and was a good value @ $86 with delicious pork shank, schnitzel (with mushroom gravy for $1), dry but flavorful sauerbraten, dry ribs (tasted and looked like dry ham), decent spatzle with little flavor, superb red cabbage, and ordinary sauerkraut. Apple strudel was delicious although a bit too sweet. Best of all was the 1/2 liter Weihenstephen Dunkel (oldest brewery in the world). Judy, our server, was not friendly in the least and I wish her happier days.
Christina Hartwig
Planned my husband's birthday to be held here. We had a party of 13 people. I booked the Stube Stein room upstairs for an extra charge. I called several times the week before to ask questions each time confirming my booking date and time. I called the day of and was told I did not have a booking. Thankfully the room was still available. When my group arrived we were told our booking was for a later time then I booked but they rushed to get the room ready. There was a long lag between getting seated, getting drinks and getting our menus. The hostess brought the menus up and stuck them in the corner of the room and no one knew. Eventually someone asked for menus and she came up and passed them out. We had one server for our entire party. He was great and a hard worker but was not able to keep up with our larger group. The room was unbearably hot. The staff knew this was an issue and stated there were no seperate controls for temperature nor windows that could be opened and people in my group kept going outside to get relief. We were sweating and drinking tons of water. It was very uncomfortable and is something that should have been mentioned for planning purposes. Everyone got their food except two people. Those two people got their food about the same time everyone else was finishing up. The food was good but a bit overpriced probably for the novelty of it. My husband and a couple others ordered desset. It took over 30 mins for that to arrive. They would not split the bill which I knew in advance but it was very difficult to figure out who owed what with their reciept. The place was beautiful and well decorated. Parking was a breeze. The entire experience was over 4 1/2 hours. I would return for dinner but not with a group and NOT in that hotbox of a room.
Steve Runyon
Bartenders Melody and Demi were amazing. Even got to see Diplo and he thought the bartenders were hot. 10/10 will visit again.
Wendy the manager was amazing and busser Zach was working his ace off. Judy added great barside commentary and able to keep everyone honest. Jodi from the kitchen gave amazing kitchen service. All in all a wonderful time and wonderful crew.
The food was also really good. Amazing German sauerkraut.
Dennis
Mader's is such a treat each and every time. The Beef Mushroom Strudel is melt in your mouth perfect. Our Server Carla was spot on while being personable. Great food, fantastic staff and a beautiful venue makes a winner 🏆. …
David Haynes
Excellent German food in wonderful city! When coming to Milwaukee be sure to put this on your must see list. Food is outstanding. The atmosphere is nostalgic!
L H
My husband and I had our wedding reception at Mader's in late August and we were so very pleased with everything. Because of Covid-19 and our party size, they allowed us to take over the main dining room which was totally awesome. We had a German buffet including all of our favorite Mader's dishes and the food was fabulous. The service was top notch! Our friends and family are still raving about how phenomenal the reception was. Thanks to everyone on the Mader's staff for making our wedding day enjoyable and very memorable.
Matthew Mitchell
The pork shank was the most delicious, tender, succulent pork I've ever had. Ask for Amelia, she's the best and will take good care of you!
John G.
Had the tour of Germany and was one of the best meals I've had in the past few years. Was recommended the old fashion and that was delicious too.
Brian Birringer
The place is good. Food was amazing!! Smoked brisket and meat smoked right outside so the smells radiate everywhere! Would ha e gave 5 stars but the bartender missed the mark on drinks. Will visit again though because the food was worth it!
Sarah Sterling
Had the most lovely Thanksgiving buffet dining experience. A member of the Mader family visited our table to make sure everything was ok. There was more than enough food and everything was expertly prepared.
The apple strudel for dessert was BEYOND. I mean seriously. I haven't had a dessert that good in ages.
If you've never to been to Mader's, it is a must for any Milwaukee area resident, or anyone visiting. The oldest continously operating restaurant in the city has a historic atmosphere with stain glass throughout, pictures adorning the walls that tell the tales of years past, and names of famous diners who've graced its hallowed grounds.
Michelle
Awesome experience! The food and the ambience was spot on. Definitely felt that authenticity and I'm still thinking about those brussel sprouts! 🤤 …
Shawn Nareski
Haven't been here in years. Wow! Biggest surprise was how reasonable the prices are. Same authentic atmosphere, authentic attire worn by the staff. Really great in these near-post covid times.
kutay ersal
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, big portions, great German beer, go for the litter, miles did great job with suggestions and the service!!! Fine job everyone!!!
Phillip Jackson
Weird place, food is okay, beer is okay. Dinning area is very formal. Would recommend the bar unless you are after dead silence.
Terry Fortner
Enjoyable to visit and view with excellent food and service.
Philip Gissen
We were back home in Milwaukee for a visit in the frigid month of January. After eleven years of exile, that Wisconsin cold is really cold! After cocktails at Mason Street Grill, my wife craved schnitzel and with Karl Rausch’s and Jon Ernst gone, we Ubered to Mader’s. It was always mediocre and its mediocrity continues in all its glory. Everything was okay, nothing special. On a cold Wednesday night, the atmosphere at the bar was sad and a bit weird, but I did enjoy looking at the photos on the walls. The next time my wife craves schnitzel, I will book airfare to Berlin, and we will dine at Lutter and Wegner.
Nick Lewis
We went here back in February and I forgot to write a review. The atmosphere was incredible we loved all the antique items and paintings. Had an excellent beer and a serving of several sausages which all but one were very good. My wife had a great beef dish with a gingersnap sauce that was insanely good I regret not getting it. Was very pricey but I think it was well worth it.
Aaron Miller
Great food in an old time relaxed atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the food was delicious and authentic.
Newbie VonNewberson
The food is amazing. The service is great. The setting is very nice, very old school formal dining, but you can go in shorts and t-shirt if you want.
Best German food ever, and I was stationed in Berlin for 3 and a half years, so I know. Even heats up well the next day.
Downsides? A bit hard to get to location-wise, and it is not a cheap eat.
That said, I always feel like I got my money's worth.
Marcus S
Great service, good food and traditional German decor.
JR Schroeder
Had an excellent evening here with 3 teammates while attending a soccer tournament. Interesting decor and historical pictures - paraphernalia. Nice staff, good food & oh, did I mention the draft beer? If you are visiting Milwaukee, make this a stop.
Jerome Oneill
An absolutely magnificent meal. All the food we tasted was delicious. Portions are generous, but please take my advice and save room for dessert. The strudel is served warm, it’s crisp and without question the best I have ever had. The atmosphere is perfect; spend some time walking around the dining areas and you’ll see it’s like a museum. Service by a young woman named Nathalie was fantastic. She was knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and efficient. Prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality. There is no doubt that Mader’s will be a regular stop every time we visit Milwaukee.
Kathleen Altman
Delicious and authentic German food. Apple strudel is worth a trip to Milwaukee. Really friendly service.
Adam Arnett
Awesome food and an awesome setting. If I ever find myself in Milwaukee again, I’ll be back here!
Mike O
This place was great. I've never been to a German restaurant that was this German! Had some excellent cheeses and sausages, and a main course of Hungarian Goulash. All was excellent. I'm not a beer guy so I didn't partake in their ample selection, but most in my group did and were very pleased with the selection.
If I'm ever in the area again, this will be on the list to revisit!
Geoff Goodlad
We had a fabulous birthday dinner for my wife! Rachael was wonderful and attentive server, and the food was enjoyed by all!
DK G
Nice old German restaurant with emphasis on the old. Needs some updates even with trying to retain an old world feeling. The menu is some good German dishes but they were average or not very flavorful. Had a sampler plate and everything was cold or lukwarm. Expected better in Milwaukee. This place has been here a long time and better days may have been behind it.
Helen Engberts
The Tour of Germany plate feeds 4 comfortably and is absolutely decadent! We ordered a salad and an appetizer in addition and it was perfect :)
Yvette Procter
Food is always amazing. We loved the rueben rolls, hot bacon salad, and French onion soup. The tour of Germany for two gives you a plentiful taste of all dishes. Our waitress Rachel was so sweet, accommodating, and efficient. She made our visit extra special
Tom Gregory
Pricey, but good. I have only been here a few times. In the past I have gone with schnitzel or sausages and really enjoyed it. This time I had the scallop mac and cheese and wasn't overly impressed. The sauce was rich and the pasta heavy, which I like, but it didn't have a sharp note like cheddar or a spicy note like Sriracha and for me that is disappointing. I am still giving a 5 star rating for this visit based on previous dining experiences.
Celso Rivera
My wife and I have wanted to try Mader's for a while and the food and service did not disappoint. Great place for German classics, drinks were good, beer is fantastic. If you are in the area, make sure you visit Mader's, we will definitely be back!
Elvin Ridder
Great food. Salmon a standout. Service good. Biggest problem stuffy room AC most have been not working
Carol Wagner
This wonderful German restaurant has been in the same family for several generations. This was my first visit and I wasn't disappointed. Be warned! the portions are enormous. There is a wide selection of traditional German dishes on the menu. Everyone in our group declared their meal to be delicious. There is also a wonderful selection of German, USA and international beers and wine on offer. Be sure to take a walk down the back of the restaurant so you can see all the American and international celebrities and famous people who have visited here. If I didn't live in Australia I would certainly be back for another meal.
Jessica Monsivaiz
Great first time visit! Never had German food before. Went in on Sunday and the had a big Buffet open with alot of options. Tge food was great! Service was awesome! I will be back when I go back up that way.
Tyler C
What an awesome end to a great day. Me and a couple of riding buddies stopped here for dinner last Saturday and everything from top to bottom was absolutely amazing. The service, the ambiance, the food were all top-notch. The impromptu musician playing outside was the icing on the cake (Get that man a record deal!)
I would gladly return and recommend that anyone in the nearby area stop here. Thank you guys.
Victoria Kot
Everything about this restaurant exceeded my expectations. Amazing service, the food was beyond delicious, the decor classy, and the history showcased was so fascinating. I went with a large group of coworkers, everyone was extremely pleased. I am vegetarian and they had multiple options for me to choose from. Food was very authentic and absolutely perfect! This restaurant is by far the best I've ever been to.
ron burkett
German cuisine and setting. Food was excellent. I would have given 5 stars but it took forever to get our tab.
Eric Heintz
2020: Yet another astounding experience here at Mader's. Our server, Joey, was so phenomenal and attentive even when he was very busy! The food was absolutely delicious and they had a great Valentine's day special. Absolutely recommend to any and all in the Milwaukee area.
2019: Constantly recommend this place to travelers and friends! Absolutely great food! Very german menu and very good drinks as well! Staff was friendly and the atmosphere was astounding! I really cannot say enough great things about this place! The price is higher but that is reflected in the quality of their food! An absolutely must see!
Pierce Nicholson
Everything was absolutely delicious. The meal sizes are massive. We are covid-concerned and at no point felt uncomfortable. You have to try the pork shank. We are already planning another visit and would recommend to anyone. The platter we got was perfect for variety. Prost!
T Remy
Great place to have a German meal! Was a nice remembrance to eat things we loved while living in Germany! We shared the German sampler, and the beef strudel. The appetizer was very nice as well...good beer cheese with croustinis! Nice atmosphere too, really reminded me of German restaurant over there. This place has been there for a long time, and the last of three German restaurants in town. If you like German food -- stop in here for food and beer, even Rudesheimer coffee!! Make plans to stop in when you are in the downtown area!!
Overdriver X
Such a great restaurant and experience! The staff are so friendly and absolutely incredible! The authentic food is amazing! Great selection of beer! And the decor this fantastic!
Alexandra Porras
Great food, great service, great atmosphere!!! Totally recommend!!!
Nathan Humphrey
I loved this place! It was the coolest german style restaurant I've ever been to. It was beautiful, from the stained glass to the armor, we had a great time. The food was amazing, best cheese curds I had in Milwaukee, and the staff was great. Definitely going back, and would reccomend.
Edward Pochay
A true dining experience!!! I went for the Rhine sampler. Schnitzel and goulash.
A must go. The pork shank is Sehr Gut!!
Ted Eschete
Oue server Justin was awesome, food was great.
Jennie Clark
So yummy and pricey but plates are large enough to split... delicious
Michael Felton
So much fun. Great service, food and beer.
Steven Christian
Amazing German experience. Great food.
Krystine Lange
Fabulous food. Great service. Environment wonderful. We loved this restaurant because we could make believe we were in Germany. The waiter even corrected our pronunciation 😆
Luke Kazmierski
It's ok, good for a fancy meal, but the food is not that great. I've had better cheaper German dishes. I don't really consider the food that amazing here. I prefer street food in Germany any day to what I had at a very high price here. Service is good but can be on the slower side. Everybody will dress up to go here, so it is on the nice fancy side, so date worthy. Collar shirt/suit kind of place. Not a place I really plan to go again.
Mindy Moon
Went for the Mother’s Day brunch with family and friends. The food was tasty! Smoked salmon, made to order omelets, prime rib, lamb, ribs of desserts (apple strudel is the best) fresh veggies/fruits and more. Friendly staff. Definitely a Milwaukee favorite/landmark. Recommend the food
Robert Mentecki
My first visit in 3 years. I was unimpressed. Food was average at best. The meal did not include soup or salad. Portions were ok(not great for the price). I've been getting larger portions and better quality traditional German meals with equal ambiance for 25% less expensive at EVERY OTHER GERMAN RESTAURANT in the city. Service was fine. Its just not as high quality and worth the price as I remembered. I have absolutely no problem paying any price, if the meal and service justify it. By reading the other reviews I'm hoping it was just an off day. I will be back and give this place another try soon.🤞🤞
Frank Escobar
It was perfect, service, food, place, everything
Weston Hall
Great bartender and amazing traditional food. Love coming here.
Daniel Abramovitch
We were in Milwaukee for a conference and after the Roadfood reviews, chose to go to Mader's for a group dinner. As the planned number in our party swelled from the typical 20+ to over 40, the restaurant staff got in touch with me and we worked out to have a private room and their German buffet. The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating, as we adjusted on the fly about ordering pitchers of beer for the group. We also had need of a cake to celebrate one of our group getting a major field award, and the person coordinating went out and got an inscribed sheet cake for us. At the end, everyone was asking me how I had organized this, but it was a great fun place, with a professional and very helpful staff.
Chris Hernandez
Never had a bad experience here. Food is stick to your ribs and heavy, perfect in winter. Service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing
Jenny Taylor
Delightful old-time Bavarian atmosphere, with great, authentic German flavors at a comfortable and leisurely pace. The glazed Brussel sprouts with swiss and crispy onion were exceptional.
Servers were attentive and friendly. Highly recommebd
Tracey Hensen
Excellent service and an abundance of delicious German food! Very clean restaurant with deep history in Milwaukee well displayed.
Courtney Slagle
Very cool old school German vibe. Great beer selection served in a classic ceramic mug. Tons of historic decorations, especially their photo op of the big famous chair. Expensive but completely worth it! Tour of Germany was plenty of food to feed 2 to 3 adults. Nice little souvenirs for purchase as well. Street parking or valet lot.
Suzanne Kalra
I'll start by saying that the overall rating of this restaurant is completely misleading. A few (mostly younger and pretentious) people are dragging down what should be a much higher rating.I lived in Berlin for over 3 1/2 years, and I think I know what German food generally tastes like, and honestly I don't like all of it. The German food I do like was usually pretty good.
Kaveh Shahidi
Traditional German food and motif.. if you have a few dollars to spend I'll definitely recommend it!
Sydney
I had the most delicious, authentic German food here, starting with the cheese dip appetizer and splitting the Belgian platter and a German sampler. The German fellow that was sitting at the table next to us said that it was a good assortment of things to try from all over the country.
The only thing that I didn't like was how long the service took, we spent almost 2.5 hours here while waiting for the next course to come after our appetizer. Aside from that it was great!
Hendrick Long
The atmosphere could use some updating but a nice place if you like German food. The prices are high but the service was expectional. Our server was Nick and he made great suggestions on the menu and anticipated our needs. If we go back, we'll only ask for him. I have never had a bad meal here, I have tried most things on the menu and what I havent tried my family has, everything is good, well prepared and served quickly.
michael neff
Fantastic food and atmosphere
Elizabeth Brown
We went here to celebrate our anniversary. Love the German food. It's not cheap, but worth the trip from Chicago for a special occasion. Valet parking was convenient and no charge - only a tip.
Byron Nikolas
In this place everthing is amazing.
Jen P
I visited Mader's on a Friday night. I ordered a lovely beef dish with golden raisens, sour cream and gravy. As a side, I had the spaetzel. The spatzel was a bit dry and bland so I asked for salt. The young water came back with a brown sauce thr resembled the gravy on the meat and said he had forgotten to give me this. Thinking it was for the dish, I poured it all over the spatzel, as the beef had plenty of gravy. I think the young man brought the sauce to the wrong table... It was sour, it wasn't the samr gravy as on the beef, and it ruined the spatzel for me.
On a positive note, the decor and atmosphere was super pleasant.
M M
Really nice atmosphere!! Great German food and beer!
Carrie Diesberger
I cannot recommend this place enough. My family and I loved everything we had. I had the rouladen, and it was incredible. I'm very particular about my rouladen, and this was even better than what I had at my wedding (Husband and I are German). Our server was so polite, passionate, and witty. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and eat here. It may be a but pricier than other restaurants, but I guarantee it is worth the money.
Spike Kuenn
Always a great place for a German meal!
Paul Shinkle
Lou is the perfect bartender. Unpretentious. Excellent. Great food in a classic MKE location.
Pam Koehler
Food was great! Pretzel was ginormus! Ruben rolls were fantastic!
Jeff Covington
The restaurant lived up to the hype. Very good. Roasted pork was exquisite.
Jane Jenkins
Have had the privilege to enjoy many top end restaurants and this ranks right up there. For the price, it is a great value. Had the five course chef special with wine pairings for our 25th anniversary. The layers of flavor was exquisite. For a special occasion, you can't go wrong. Definitely going again.
Brian (Rabidslug)
Price, can't afford this place too often, but wonderful for a rare treat
Brittany B
If you're looking for authentic German food, look no further. Mader's has always been a favorite when enjoying a night in Milwaukee the food is phenomenal as well as the service. We took our daughter for her first Mader's experience when she was 3, and the staff were terrific with her they kept striking up a conversation with her every time they would pass by our table, and they have a surprisingly nice kids menu. This is a pretty upscale restaurant and I was impressed at just how kid friendly it was.
The best part, the absolutely phenomenal atmosphere. You'll feel like you're in the middle of Germany and far from Wisconsin when you enter. They have an extensive list of famous guests that have dined there as well.
Krista Hopp
I can only rate it a 4 because we didn’t eat IN the restaurant. We got a giant pretzel to go, and it was amazing! The staff was very friendly while we waited. We did look at the menu and decided lunch would be the time to come— prices were a bit lower, and there still seemed to be a good selection. We will definitely stop there the next time we’re in MKE!
Ken Beals
Great German food in a restaurant that is s Showplace, with all sorts of fascinating details. It's not inexpensive, but going for lunch made it affordable, and both the quality of the food and the uniqueness of the building made it worth the money. The service is excellent, too, with capable costumed staff and a central location.
Audette Bowen
Awesome. MUST have the baked pretzel. The Spotted Cow beer is fabulous
KingsRow55
A great experience!
Recently visited for a family member's birthday, and the food was almost as much as experience as the restaurant itself. Bavarian food, if you've never tried it, can be a little confusing, but the wonderful servers at Mader's are happy to answer any questions. My only gripe is the price, but that can be overlooked if you are visiting for special occasions.
I still dream about those reuben rolls...
Freda Pryga
Staff was very nice.
Deb our waitress was very good & explained the entire menu plus.
My friends was first time & I had been several over years.
David M
Great food, great service! Excellent German cuisine! This place has been around for a long time for a reason. Everyone in our party of 8 were extremely happy with our orders.
Jeannette Schultz
We had a work party here today with 30 people, and these guys accommodated us without issue, and without hassle. Our waitresses were spectacular, did a great job, didn't forget anything, and were quite capable. The food was amazing, and the decor phenomenal. Would highly recommend to anyone!
Zach Heise
Went there December 22 with a party of 10. Pros: great ambiance and beautiful decor. Beer in glass boots was tasty. Portion size for food was quite large. Cons: the cocktails tasted more like sweet sodas. I consulted with 4 of my fellow diners after we left and unfortunately, we agreed the food was bland and just not very interesting to eat; eating felt like a chore we had to slog through. Is it possible that the famous Maders has rested on its famous laurels a bit too long? Time to spice things up (perhaps literally) and excite the taste buds a bit.
John DeSantis
This is landmark restaurant with over a century of history. The decor is one of a kind. Service and atmosphere was excellent. Ordered the oxtail soup and lamb shank. Food was good and served hot.
John Hess
Best German food in town. I go here every chance I get. I order Sauerbraten almost every time. Great atmosphere. Friendly and prompt service. Excellent food.
Eric Prickett
Super fun place to come with a group of folks. In my case with work colleagues and customers. Service was top notch, and the food was devine and unique. Will return some day!
Caleb Sanders
Such a well put together restaurant! Very cool old German style inside and out. The interior was great. But even yet, the food was amazing! All German-style dishes and favorites. A large bar in addition to the restaurant proper. Classic glass boot mugs as souvenirs.
Paul Barsch
This is definitely one of Wisconsin's treasures and should be experienced by all. The food is outstanding, the ambiance and its history take you back to a moment in time. The Amazing thing is we can enjoy it now and make it our moment! ❤
Janet Geist
What a great and unique dining experience. Amazing furnishing and style. German, Bavarian menu. I had a stuffed pepper soup and hot bread. My entree was Weiner schnitzel (pork) with Mushroom gravy. And the red cabbage. So delicious. Too full to even consider dessert. This place has been visited by so many presidents and other celebrities. It I my books is a must see in Milwaukee
Daniel R
Best German restaurant we’ve ever experienced! Highly recommend.
Richard Salonek
Everything about our meal here was superb. Service excellent. We started with a Bavarian weisswurst, pretzel, and fried pickle appetizer. Excellent. My wife had the beef and mushroom strudel with German potato salad. I had the wiener schnitzel with spatzel. Outstanding. We finished with black forest cake. Yum. If you like authentic German food, do yourself a favor and eat at Madar's the next time your in Milwaukee.
Emily Hall
Came in over the weekend for a lunch date with my husband. We ordered the big pretzel and potato pancakes for an appetizer. Both were delicious! And then ordered the sausage platter and the schnitzel sandwich for the meal. I got spatzle instead of fries/chips. My husband didn't care for his food, thought it was bland. My spatzle was very bland, very dry. My schnitzel sandwich, the meat was dry but the tomato jam and fried pickles on it were great! The food left a lot to be desired, we've had better from other places in the area. Our server was great though, very attentive. I doubt we'll be back, but glad we still went.
Kevon Houghton
I *love* German food. I lived in Germany for a couple years and this really reminded me of my time there. That being said... the prices are tourist level high!! I ordered the pork schnitzel with jager sauce. The amount of sauce was lacking, and the depth of flavor not so great. Still... the ambiance was nice, just not sure it is worth the price.
Emily Trombley
Picked this place because it is close to the ball park and a decent room price. Rooms are very nice even for a building that's not brand new. The hotel provides bottled water every day which is great for sightseeing. Lots of places to eat, we ate at the sports bar our first night so we could watch the game.Visiting from out of town to watch the Seattle Mariners play the Milwaukee Brewers.
Lynn C
Great food, large servings and Amberlee was an excellent server!
Jer J
This is the best German restaurant to be found anywhere! Whether you want anything from weinersnitzel to Sauerbraten to anything in between. They especially have the best recipe for Saurbraten. It is a little sweeter, with along with the sour, makes it the best anywhere. I highly recommend this fine establishment. A must go if you like good food!
Chris Kronshage
Very old, traditional German restaurant in Milwaukee. My father used to go there 60 years ago when he lived there. Nice to follow in his footsteps. Excellent food, great atmosphere, and attentive wait staff. It is quite economical if you go there for lunch. The most expensive dish, (the sauerbraten), was around $15. This included traditional red cabbage, sauerkraut, spaetzle, and very delicious pretzel rolls. I would definitely check this place out if you find yourself in downtown Milwaukee.
Mary Peterson
Our 85$ explore Germany platter arrived barely warm. Meats were very dry. Seemed like poorly warmed leftovers. Was looking forward to a family dinner at this iconic Milwaukee restaurant but left extremely disappointed.
B os
Great service
From the hosts to the servers all were super great....
And the old fashioned was super goood not to mention the best onion soup ive ever had....
Jeani Patek
I stopped here while in town for work and went back several times. I highly recommend the tour, Brussel sprouts, Reuben rolls, pretzels, and apple strudel. Added bonus, easy valet parking.
Angie Nguyen
I’d never really tried German food before. I came into this thinking meats and potatoes and low expectations. I was delightfully surprised. The flavors were really good! I didn’t realize I could enjoy ham, sauerkraut, and mustard that much..but I did! All three is us thoroughly enjoyed our experience and I can honestly say I have cravings for the food!!
Galen Moser
Very fun place. It's like going into a medieval castle. Great beer and drinks. The food was very good. It's a little strange because well, German food is strange. Lol
Kyle Kasprzak
Mader's offered my first real experience with German cuisine, that is beyond bratwurst.
The food was good and the service was good and speed, however our server could have made a few more visits. Guests often like attention for drink orders and/or appetizers. Our whole party of four knew exactly what we wanted to order before the waiter even stopped by for our drink order, which is to say something, we usually take forever (20 minutes) to figure that all out.
The place was decorated, overly decorated with an eclectic variety of items in an older space that offered a history of itself. Many of these were expensive works of art that offered a different type of dining ambiance.
Overall, I'd recommend Mader's to anyone wanting a more upscale experience or just good food. I advise that you take in a show and dine here before or afterwards. I'll be back.
