Reviews of Birch
Absolutely loved my meal here! The menu is very vegetarian-friendly with plenty of unique combinations that highlight the freshness of the ingredients. I particularly loved the avocado zucchini carpaccio - excellent flavors and textures! My girlfriend said her favorite was the rigatoni. We split both of the desserts, and while the chocolate cake was solid, I would definitely recommend the lemon curd instead. The ambience was lovely and the servers were all very friendly and attentive. Overall, I highly recommend Birch for a casual dinner with friends and would love to return!
Seriously what is this place .. it’s heaven . First time dinning in Milwaukee . We found it as we were trying to discover Milwaukee.. we are new in town not settled yet !! As I was walking .. the smell of that brick oven food was all over the street ,so I followed the smell , and their I met the owner & Chef Kyle out side cleaning the plants .. we talked a bit .. and told him we will come Thursday for dinner..
wow he did not disappoint.. the food is succulent with flavorful aroma. The presentation was superb.. ambiance is so modern and elegant.. If you want great night dinner must visit this place .Four Season level . Gave us a reason to love living in Wi . Definitely we will be regulars to this place . Thank you for a great experience.
Two words…Happy Hour
A short review: if you’ve wanted to try this place and unsure, go for happy hour, you won’t regret it!
A little longer review: We loved everything great food, drinks and ambiance. It’s a small menu but everything we tried was great. We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly, helpful and tolerated me making a chocolate milk joke about an espresso martini.
The “works” review: This was my first time there since it’s reopened as Birch. I previously had an amazing experience at B&B so went in assuming it would be just as good and it was!
We sat at the bar for happy hour and ordered a few drinks, the winter margarita and sparkling peche Melba (loved both). We ordered the acorn squash toast and the crunchy farm vegetables. Do yourself a favor and order the vegetables. These were SO GOOD and not what I was expecting in the best way possible. It’s an assortment of raw vegetables (stick with me here) in a seed mix that you dip into a miso sauce then back into the seeds. Not only is this crazy creative but it’s delicious. Don’t hate on eating fresh vegetables. This dish might sound simple at first, it’s not and is a must try. The ricotta on the acorn squash, a triumph. My friend and I were chatting away and the bartender was great. He was attentive but gave us space. We ordered the ricotta filled pasta to split which was so fresh and tasty. It had a hint of lemon to it and was lick the plate good… i didn’t but if you would have got a few more margaritas in me, who knows. I would 10/10 order it again. We probably should have ordered one more thing because it was so good and the first two dishes were appetizer size. Can’t wait to come back again to try the brunch not to mention their patio when it’s above 10° on a regular basis.
My wife, our dog, and I were visiting Milwaukee and stopped in for a weekend brunch in mid July. There are several outdoor tables in a nice courtyard. The outdoor seating is dog friendly as well. We ordered a Bloody Mary and a Tequila Sunrise which were delicious. Then we ordered the Ham and Cheese and Smoked Walleye. We shared them and absolutely loved both meals. As you can see from the picture, these are well though out, beautiful, and fresh meals. I wish we had this restaurant in Indianapolis. Excellent food, drinks, and service. Thanks for a great experience!
Trendy food. Good drink menu and wine list. Brick oven for great pizza things. Limited brunch menu with most items having eggs. I had the avacado smoked walleye. You might leave hungry if you're a big eater. But it was delicious. The garlic toast was a little too crispy. The bacon slices were generous sized and portions. Plenty of spacing between tables. Clean bathrooms.
Sat at the kitchen counter and everything was fantastic from the interaction with the hostesses to the chefs to our server to the food runners... Everything was amazing. Beautiful environment and gorgeously decorated. Food was creative, beautifully plated and delicious!! Highly recommend.
Small plates, delicious flavors. Nothing but great things to say about this place. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the space is open and beautiful. I will be returning.
We stopping in for breakfast and had a great experience. We enjoyed sitting on the bar and seeing the chef work in the big open kitchen. We loved seeing the meals being cooking on then indoor open fire. The items we had were delicious and fresh and the staff was professional and helpful.
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Milwaukee. The food is the freshest possible (literally from a local farmers market to your table) and is prepared with care and experience. The entire staff was lovely and knowledgeable about the food, wine, and preparation. The aesthetic was upscale and welcoming as well. I went to this restaurant twice in one week because I was so impressed. Will tell everyone I know about how amazing it was!
This place is amazing and we’re glad it is still so special since we moved away two years ago. I think it is actually even better! We did the Chef’s Tasting Menu and would highly recommend it. Everything was delicious - even things we wouldn’t normally have ordered, we loved. They have some creative magic in the kitchen here. Wish we could come more often!
Great experience. Wine pairings were on point for the entire evening. Lots of fun flavor profiles that blended well. My favorites were the pasta dishes and the carpaccio!
Thoroughly impressed by our dining experience at Birch. The kitchen staff work extremely hard and put a lot of passion and effort into each dish. Overall the food quality was excellent, dishes were well thought out, and the flavors were spot on. Definitely a very fantastic fine dining option here in Milwaukee Our servers were attentive and we really felt appreciated as customers. Glad we tried decided to try out this restaurant and we will definitely be back and really recommend that anyone considering checking this place out to come give it a try!
Fantastic experience with Natalie! I would definitely recommend dining with her, she is incredibly personable and knowledgeable of the menu. My group asked lots of questions (I have particular taste due to my experience in the service industry). The chicken and baga wine pairing was mind blowing!
Server was stellar, communication was excellent, food and cocktails worth every dollar! Will go back. Do the lemon cucumbers for dessert, the melon and candy cane pepper combination was incredible!!
Dope af food. We got a whole bunch of small plates to share and everything was really well done. Great use of raw foods and local/wild ingredients. Very good drinks as well. We sat at the bar and both of the bartenders were super friendly and attentive and made the experience more enjoyable. Will def be suggesting this place to people and will go back for sure.
Such an amazing meal! I booked a counter seat earlier in the week, mentioning it was my birthday. Practically everyone wished me a happy birthday, I ate way too much delicious food, and I got an excellent view of the meal prep. Get a counter seat if you can! It's so awesome! The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great. The smokey smell of the wood fired hearth wafts throughout the whole restaurant.
Absolutely phenomenal place. I was very very happy with the bread and butter and then I was even more happy with the pork belly. The cavatappi was an excellent pasta. Service was phenomenal. Wine selection was very very good as well. There was not one dish that I did not like.
The dishes were very exquisite. Done right and made a very impact to me being a chef. Showed a very diverse and simple dishes done right with lots of flavor profile. Staff were awesome and interacted with customers which made the experience even better. Most definitely will be back
We went for happy hour and it was awesome! We had two burgers, three beers, and cornbread and it was under $30. The burgers were really good. Mike, the bartender, was nice to me even though I only had water. Definitely recommend!
Krikaoli recommends it! This is a lovely place to have breakfast or to have brunch, or maybe dinner. The ambiance is cozy and clean, wood, and sunlight all over the area; the service is excellent, and the food is tasty. One of the things I like most is the cappuccino; it is delicious. I strongly indicate this coffee place.
Stumbled upon this gem when looking for a place to dine with family. It definitely served excellent food that was wonderfully prepared and presented. (The bacon is amazing). The service was incredible and the daily pastry assortment is unmatched. I’ll definitely return.
I’ve been here for dinner before but this was my first time having brunch at Birch + Butcher.
I was able to find street parking easily about a block down but I could definitely see parking being more difficult during the weekday rush hour.
I made a reservation ahead of time which I highly recommend since there were a few parties waiting for a table when I stepped in the door!
We ordered a cinnamon roll to share (which was phenomenal) and I chose the Avocado Toast for my meal.
Service was fantastic and I’m glad I had a chance to try the brunch here! 🍽
Fantastic place. Space fits a water street, you cab see directly into the kitchen. Had a conversation with the chef Noah who made an excellent pork tenderloin. Seemed like a good drink selection though I didn't get anything. Service was good as well, got complimentary caramels after the meal. While the chartreuse board is pricey, I highly recommend it. Excellent combos. Will go again.
I've been to Birch + Butcher four times now and I've never been disappointed. The menu is original and it's an invitation to try new ingredients and flavors. But it also has interesting twists on traditional ingredients like the shaved asparagus.
Services is friendly and super professional.
The location is great and the restaurant is super cozy!
Don't miss out on this great place!
I went for breakfast and coffee, simply amazing. The lox on a freshly made rosemary bagel, absolutely delicious.
The atmoshphere and service style for breakfast and lunch hours can be a touch confusing at first, it's a counter order place but with restaurant service. But the food was well prepared, quickly, and looked and tasted great! The in house mocha was dark and bitter sweet. The fish, bagel, and garnishments were well presented and balanced.
It was a bit cold for those who aren't very warm most places I would recommend a light sweatshirt, or on a nice day sit outside! The patio is beautiful.
Truly one of the best breakfasts I've had in years. Scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, the thick cut bacon was INCREDIBLE, and the duck fat fried potatoes were crispy on the outside and pillowy soft in the middle.
Service was attentive and the stools at the bar were extra comfy and fat friendly. I especially appreciated them asking me if I wanted a coffee to go at the end of my meal. A small thing that goes as long way to winning me over.
Pro tip: ask for some apricot jam to go with your toast. Its big chunks of fruit that are soft enough to spread with a spoon... Pairs amazingly with their sourdough.
My husband said it's the best steak he's had in Wisconsin... perfectly cooked. My sunflower seed risotto was also worth the gamble - not something I would typically order but so glad I did.
Really fantastic brunch. The smoked potatoes are easily some of the best potatoes I’ve ever eaten. The beets were delicious as well.
I would do 6/5 stars if I could. What can I say? The food was absolutely incredible. As noted in my photos, we ordered the TarTar, the Meatballs, the Sunflower risotto, and the Trout. Every single thing was literally mind blowing. I can not recommend this place enough. Top restaurant in Milwaukee without a doubt. Service was spectacular as well (Thanks Heidi) PS. Try the B+B Cola and Ginger Beer, homemade delicious-ness
Very seasonal fare mainly wood fired. Presentation is upscale, at near upscale prices. Menu is a bit limited, and flavors were decent for the price.
The good: Nice atmosphere. Great craft cocktails. Really unique, well-done small plates.
The not so good: For the price, the food wasn't quite as mind-blowing as I would have liked.
Overall, a unique experience worth having. Our group ordered several of the small plates and shared them around so everyone could try multiple items.
Birch and Butcher has some of the best sausage I've ever had. The meat is seasoned so well. Try the Birch Breakfast!
Been looking forward to Birch for awhile! Amazing wine list--we settled on a very, very drinkable orange riesling from Slovenia. Unfortunately, we were a bit underwhelmed by the pig's head dish, it felt more like a beet dish than a protein dish which is what we were expecting. The summer squash was incredible and something I (my partner) will attempt to recreate at home--just the perfect seasonal veggie in my opinion :) My partner also really enjoyed the shrimp plate. Kyle stopped by near the end of our visit which was the nice touch we needed to top off the evening. We definitely hope to be back soon!
Great food and great service! Unique menu, slightly upscale but still comfortably casual. I'll definitely be back!
Wow! What a gem. The food was amazing. And I really like the ambiance. Not sure what happened to the Butcher in the original Birch and Butcher. But it doesn't really matter. Absolutely stop by. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
Great food and service! I had the farm bowl which was surprisingly filling and had excellent zucchini. The mimosa was great, too. Even though we made a reservation just in case, it was relatively empty at 10:30 on a Saturday. Great vibe, would definitely recommend checking it out!
We had a wonderful time at Birch. We had the Chef’s tasting menu and wine pairing which was excellent. The restaurant has wonderful service and ambiance. Chef Kyle is truly creative.
Wow. This venue gave us so much more than we were expecting. We sat at the bar to enjoy watching the chefs work with the grill fire. It was our anniversary so we were welcome w the beet yogurt which was incredible and a celebratory bubbles. So very nice of them. We had the hot ham and cheese sandwich and the pork and polenta. Both meals were absolutely delicious. Really happy thank you!!
Amazing service, amazing drinks, amazing food. Will definitely be going again. They serve small plates so expect to get about 3 things for 2 people. Great options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Dessert was great. Parking can get a little hairy if you go during busy downtown hours though
Starter carpaccio, cabbage, trout and pasta with fresh ingredients and well paired flavors. Main fish and meat well grilled leaving the quality ingredients to speak for themselves.
I will return.
In a cute area in downtown Milwaukee. Loved their cheese board and mixed breads for starters. Had the hand rolled spaghetti for main which was also very good!
A really excellent dinner - pleasantly surprised with a good local NA beer selection. The steelhead crudo appetizer was amazing. The fish entrees - broiled rainbow trout with wine pairing, and a pan seared walleye - were great and *not* overcooked. Get the goat cheese cheesecake and figure out what they did to the green apple topping.
Service was friendly and expeditious.
Great atmosphere and our cocktails and entrees were excellent. There's a chef's bar where you can watch the kitchen magic happen while dining. The small menu is tailored to the seasons, having a great assortment that should please everyone.
To die for bagel! It was the best tasting bagel I've ever had. I have never had a bagel with so much flavor!!! I got the ham, cheese, and egg bagel (everything bagel) sandwich. The bagel again was amazing, the ham was fresh and full of flavor, the cheese was melted perfectly, the egg was well cooked and seasoned and it all put together was an explosion of flavor. Then for a treat for later, I bought the cranberry cherry pastry (poptart) looking thing and that was mouth watering and the pastry was cooked to perfection a d so flaky. Next time I am back in town, I will make sure to load up on bagels and actually try their larger food menu!
I've been to Birch + Butcher twice so far. This will be my go-to double date or group of friends spot moving forward. Everything I've eaten was wonderful and I loved that the portions are intended to share so my companions and I had an opportunity to try a variety of flavors. What a great addition to the Milwaukee dining scene!
My wife and I had a nice time there. We sat outside but it got really chilly, really fast! While the cold stunk, the vibe was very nice and the food was fabulous! I'd happily go back. And of course, remember you're downtown and right on water st, so it does get pretty noisy. Don't let that take away from the experience though.
I've only gone here for breakfast but the bagel sandwiches are a delight and pretty to look at too. I'm also happy that this place is large so that it can absorb the brunt of all the white people who liked to brunch and stand in line before me when I get hungry.
Delicious food, excellent ambiance, great variety, and locally sourced. Some of my favorite dishes are below!
Start with Soft Pretzels, Whipped Cheddar + Pickled Jalapeno. Side dish with Sunflower Seed Risotto, BBQ Parsnips, Grilled Rapini, and Celeriac. Main dish with the Pork Cutlet and drink the Cranberry Brandy Old Fashioned (on draft) or Like Minds Birch + Butcher Dry Hopped Saison. Finish with Apple Crisp + Ice Cream dessert. Highly recommend this place to eat and drink!
Food Highlight of our trip to MKE. Had brunch, It was outstanding. Service was friendly and prompt. Highly recommend sitting at the bar by the kitchen. It was awesome to see the chefs communication, coordination, and high standards up close!
took a friend as a surprise, we enjoyed ourselves throughly. pleasant atmosphere, clean, friendly and caring.
Called ahead for some general information about the menu. I can not say enough of how wonderful their customer service was. I gave 5 stars and wish I could give 10. Definitely recommend the house specials.
Cheese bagel was amazing! Was a great combo with the ham, egg, and cheddar! One of the best bagels I have had
Amazing, locally sourced food and drinks that are among the best in MKE. Their bread, especially cornbread, is always fresh and incredibly delicious. Kim at the bar is very knowledge and helpful too.
The menu was incredible, we wanted to order one of everything. The food we did end up ordering was so good that we were both left speechless. Perfect flavor pairings, very unique and creative. It is a wonderful culinary experience.
Excellent service. Friendly, knowledgeable, detailed. It was nice to experience again - service quality has really taken a hit post Covid.
Food/ cocktails ranged from outstanding to pretty good. Some dishes were a bit heavy on the acidity balance. Definitely recommend the steak tartare. It hits the balance of acid/fat perfectly, with great umami/bitterness notes.
Nice restaurant with a exposed kitchen. All of the staff were very nice and the food was tasty. It is fun that you can see the kitchen and the big wood fire.
They keep their menu pretty lean (a good thing in my opinion) but they have a pretty good wine selection. Not as many beer options but they are stocking interesting ones.
Only popped in for a quick, light bite at the bar, but I had a great experience and would happily return for the delicious seasonal veggies, tasty drinks, and excellent service!
If you're up for a culinary journey into who Kyle and Zachary are look no further. Sophisticated dishes with both string theatre and flavor profiles as well as playful dishes and those inspired from culinary moments, Birch seems to have it all.
One of the highlights of our visit was a trout crudo in a rich verjus.
Be daring and order a seasonal house cocktail, smile and enjoy the moment.
Beautiful decor. Nice ambiance. Food was good, but not the most amazing I've ever had. Beware that if you order the "crunchy" vegetables that just means raw vegetables with a dipping sauce... Admittedly the dipping sauce was carrot and very good. We also had focaccia bread starter and the bottom was very clearly burnt when I pointed this out to the waitress she said it was supposed to be that way... I've eaten a lot of focaccia bread over the years never had it burnt. Wine section was good, but I would have expected them to bring us more bread or offer to take it off the bill since it was burnt.
I'm writing this review after having dinner at the new restaurant, Birch, which opened at the end of May 2021. We had dinner a week after it first opened and absolutely LOVED the food! The chef's presentation is so thoughtful you almost don't want to eat the food. The menu changes regularly. We had pasta, chicken and beef and it was all so delicious, especially the pasta. We cannot wait to go back and cannot recommend Birch enough. The wine list is also super, providing a solid variety for everyone's palate.
Modern style brunch place in Milwaukee.
Pretty unique style of menus are lovely.
Especially ketchup is very impressive with potatoes.
If I could give more stars I would! This place was phenomenal!! My husband had the pork ragu and I had the roasted walleye. We also tried the beef tartare which was a first time for me. Everything was amazing from the service to the drinks to the food. Can't wait to come back and try more items!
Wonderful atmosphere, food, drinks and service! My friends and I had a BLAST here and enjoyed every minute of our brunch! Can't wait to come back. 🥰 …
Would definitely go back. Great cocktails, great foods, great atmosphere. The cocktails were creative and delicious. The food definitely didn't disappoint. Heads up though, it's served family style. We had strip steak and pork loin as our mains. So well seasoned and cooked just right. For sides we had BBQ parsnips which were surprisingly amazing even without the chili cream sauce. Definitely worth a try but kinda expensive.
Service was phenomenal. Drinks were limited and boozy, eh. Food was great. Skip the crunchy farm vegetables though as they were mildly disappointing. Everything else was good. Will be back to try other food plates.
Remarkably beautiful food, executed to perfection. A very nimble cocktail selection. Attentive, skilled, and unobtrusive server. This is the Standard of chef-owned dining in MKE. Well done indeed, Birch.
Delicious autumn brunch menu! I ordered the steel head crudo, grilled vegetables, and autumn margarita. Everything was delicious and the autumn marg was a stand out. They took the allergies I specified seriously and items were prepped accordingly. We will be back!
The place for foodies and wine lovers to dine in Milwaukee! Birch has become our go to place to dine in MKE! Great food, great service, great wine list!
The food is sophisticated at the same time rustic, as many plates are prepared with an open fire and everything was delicious. Farm fresh local ingredients have inspired this outstanding menu.. every dish has been delicious.
Hands down THE BEST best food and service I have ever had! My fiance and I went here because we had heard great things about them and they were so right! Even though they were busy the staff was attentive and fast we had our drinks and appetizer (the lamb tartar) within minutes. And I can honestly say the skirt steak is to die for! Definitely will come again!
First time in Milwaukee and this was our first stop. WOW. Every bite and sip was perfect, plus the service was excellent. I so appreciated the seasonality of the menu and how creative it was.
Great location by the river and the outdoor patio with the lights and fire place made dining inside very festive and cozy. Our first time there and would say, overall, the food was good....just not great. Mostly disappointed in the service. Server was obviously new and lacked the training to deal with questions about the food and beverages. Woman in our party requested a Jack Daniels. Server had never heard of it and was not helpful in explaining why B+B didn't carry that brand (assuming because they only carry local brands?? which would have been an acceptable explanation, even a selling point, if we were given that from the server or the bartender) and when asked to find the best substitute, she came back with a scotch???? Guess that was the bartenders recommendation? Server was also not able to explain much about the menu items other than what was written in the menu. Again, very pleasant person, just not knowledgeable about the food or more importantly, not willing to seek better answers to our questions from the chef or bartender.
I had the grilled romaine salad, which was very good! However, the pork tenderloin with the polenta lacked flavor and not enough bacon jam on the plate to help. Grilled whitefish with the mustard greens had good flavor but was a little dry? From reading the other customer reviews (both before and after our experience), seems this might have been an "off night" for the restaurant (at least for us). May return to try again.
Loved this place. My fiance loves a good steak and for his birthday each year we try to find a new place. This may be the end of us finding a new place because his steak was cooked perfectly rare. To start the meatballs and grits we're incredible. The service was outstanding. Absolutely thrilled with our visit. I don't have any photos because we ate it all too quickly :)
Had a phenomenal experience at Birch + Butcher today. A friend recommended this place to me for the next time I was in Milwaukee (because I live about an hour away). I am so glad I tried it. The waitress was extremely friendly, and was very attentive (I can't remember her name but she had red hair and a big smile). The restaurant is in a word....Swank. Very modern, clean and very cool! I had the Lox Bagel for brunch and it was AWESOME! It came with a very generous amount of Lox, and came with tomatoes and an onion glaze of some kind that was really tasty! (not something I would have expected). I asked a few questions and found out that the bagels are baked there on site in the morning fresh, and everything served is hand made. So good, and you can tell that they pride themselves on going the extra mile, and the food shows it. You will taste the difference. The owners took out the time to chat with us and gave us the history of the place. Very driven young couple that owns the place, and definitely cares about quality!!! Try this place, you will not regret it and you cannot go wrong!
Dinner at Birch was one of the best meals I have ever had. Not only was the service impeccable but all of the dishes had flavor combinations I would have never thought possible. I will definitely be back.
Hip and vibrant. Really good service... really good food...and excellent cocktails. The wine list is solid but not spectacular. The beers are focused on local offerings. These can be great or not...be sure you know what you like. They will pour samples to help make a good choice.
We had a very good time when we visited with a group of 8. I will go back in warmer weather to sit on what looks to be an awesome patio.
Everything was really good. Delicious food, good cocktails. They would have gotten 5 stars but the steak knives were so dull, we couldn't even use them. Thank goodness they have serrated butter knives. Our entire group found it easier and more effective to cut our steaks with butter knives than the steak knives provided. It became quite comical after several drinks though...
the corn bread is the best. chicken is great. salty in general
I cannot express how incredible and accommodating the service staff is and has consistently been. The food is mouth-watering delicious! We tried most things with our group of 12 for my SO's birthday dinner. The lamb was so tasty, the pork loin impeccably prepared, chicken was flavorful, and a new favorite, the trout, was to die for. Everyone was so pleased with the food which can be difficult with 12 people! Tried and true, birch + butcher exceeded all my expectations with fabulous cocktails and dessert as well. An absolute favorite, and highly recommended.
THE BEST RESTAURANT IN MILWAUKEE RIGHT NOW. I can’t even believe this food is coming out of MKE. If this was in Chicago, we’d be talking about when the Michelin Guide would be giving it well deserved acknowledgement.
To really dial it up to 11, the service team provides true hospitality, enveloping you in warmth. The drink list is immaculately curated and composed. This is what a dining experience should be. Zero pretense, humble hospitality, and mind blowingly intentional, delicious food.
Bravo.
I went with three stars for two reasons. #1 I was disappointed that they use processed Turkey in the Cafe area on their sandwiches. Turkey is a relatively cheap meat or get rid of the Turkey and use Chicken. To smoke one Turkey Breast or Chicken Breast daily for fresh meat offerings for the Cafe sandwiches is not unreasonable. #2 The reasonably priced Happy Hour Burger was very over seasoned and salty. I found it practically inedible. I ate only a quarter of it and guzzled 3 tall glasses of water. The rest of the 5 star reviews highlight the fantastic service and other great food offerings and presentations. With those I completely agree!
Tried this place for the first time and loved it! Nice atmosphere and menu selection. We tried the homemade pretzels, butternut squash dish and trout main course and everything was delicious. Also stopped into the butcher shop near the front of the restaurant to take a look around. They had a nice selection of meats and cheeses and other items that would be good to pick up if you're hosting a few friends. We'll definitely be going back to try some other things on the menu!
Great ambiance and friendly staff! Food was flavorful and inventive. We were there early (full service starts at 9, but bakery is open earlier) and split a delicious strawberry rhubarb pastry before our breakfast. We enjoyed the outside seating area, but the inside looked super nice as well!
Really a nice place for a meal. We each had a different entree and it was tasty. Great bar selection, as well. Didn't feel rushed to free up a table. It was really enjoyable.
Literally the best spot to eat in Milwaukee. No other contenders come close. The only “fine ish” dining restaurant to spend your money on in Milwaukee.
The ambiance is really nice. We went for brunch. Great customer service from beginning to end. Overall the food was a hit and miss. We ordered the beef tartar, biscuits and gravy, chicken and waffles and the B.E.L.T.
The beef tartar is a must. Flavored very well and paired nicely with the crostini bread.
The chicken waffles was a hit and miss for me. The waffles are made from corn bread. I think it would've been better if the waffles wasn't burnt because you couldn't get a lot of the flavor from the corn bread. The chicken was juicy and the breading complimented it very well.
My mother in law tried the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were really good by it self but the gravy tasted like it missed something in it. Not your traditional sausage and gravy. It had a peppery kick to it with a taste we couldn't quite put a finger on.
The B.E.L.T was really good. The bacon was the best part. My wife ordered the kimchi on the side.
Staff was amazing and friendly. The food was delicious! This is a "small" dish kind of place which was perfect. The flavor combinations are delicious as well.
I took my fiancé here for his birthday weekend brunch. The food was delicious, especially the pastry we shared! One problem was the direct sunlight. We went at 10 am, and the sun was blasting half the restaurant's seating. They don't have any blinds, so we had to deal with it. Otherwise, the atmosphere was great!
I love brunch so much, and restaurants like Birch + Butcher are why! Truly, nothing feels like a relaxing Saturday more than a mimosa in my hand at a sunlit brunch spot. We started (and finished, let's be real) with a mimosa carafe that did not disappoint. The mimosas come deconstructed with a pitcher of fresh OJ and a bottle of bubbly, allowing you to customize your alcohol-to-OJ ratio. To eat, I ordered the Rosemary Biscuits, Sausage + Charcuterie Gravy + Sunny Side Up Eggs. The sausage in the gravy was outstanding - it was so fresh and flavorful; it really elevated the dish, creating a spin on biscuits and gravy that I had never tasted before! The egg, as always, was a great touch. I couldn't manage to finish the entire dish, as it was rich and filling, but I tried! I would highly recommend Birch + Butcher for your next brunch outing and look forward to returning myself!
Awesome food and drinks. The brunch is great as well.
Recently remodeled, but still offering a special brunch experience with a well lit dining environment, creative menu selection, and fun brunch drinks. Definitely a regular spot for Saturday or Sunday brunch!
This is the premiere restaurant. The food is delicious and inventive. The choices included Fresh Farm to Table appetizers main dishes and desserts. The service was impeccable. The highlight of this restaurant is its freshly made bread which is beyond description. The servers and Hostess are friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is great for both couples and Families. I will definitely go back to this restaurant again and again
Fantastic food! The maple bacon was sweet but still savory; the potatoes were crispy on the outside but soft and creamy on the inside; the sausages gave a satisfying snap, and had a unique flavor, reminiscent of chorizo but peppery. Great atmosphere and the nicest staff I've ever had.
The tantalizing smell of food cooking over open fire wafted over us as soon as we walked in. And the food lived up to that first impression. As a group of 4, the family style dishes were perfectly sized to share several dishes. We all agreed that every dish was excellent with the skirt steak and bibb salad being favorites. Service was attentive without making us feel rushed which was perfect since we were celebrating with friends and were in no rush to eat. We will be going back!
Excellent food. The pasta was amazing. Would highly recommend. We came for a special occasion and the staff was wonderful.
Mimosa & Bloody were really good! Roasted avocado & lox (without sauce) was excellent & unique. Birch scrambled eggs, bacon & bread, fingerling potatoes also good.
Put my reservation into open table Somehow it never showed up. The manager was so accommodating. Made some table space moves and seated us in a short period of time. The skirt steak was phenomenal. Great portion to share. Others had pork, whitefish and pasta. No one was disappointed.
Loved this place - the service, the ambiance, and most importantly the food is all outstanding. The dishes are interesting and unexpected and unique - this is not your cookie cutter restaurant. Everything was very flavorful, with a good mix of rich and light, savory and sweet, earthy and bright dishes. Love the ability to do sharing plates so I could try more things, and the portions were spot on. We left feeling full but not like we might burst. I’ve also been there for bagels in the morning on weekends and the cinnamon butter on a cheese bagel is just heavenly. I’ll be back many times for sure.
Cool ambiance, great food, awesome service. The charcuterie was the best.
Had an excellent experience tonight at Birch + Butcher. I had my 3 children and in-laws in tow. After being turned away at Onesto we panicked and stumbled around downtown until we happened upon Birch+Butcher. We arrived at 4 before dinner hour and were welcomed to enjoy a drink at the bar. We ordered drinks and a bottle of wine and the bartender happyily provided coloring implements for our girls and snacks. Staff put together our table early and we tasted from every part of the menu. The whitefish, kale salad, and risotto were absolute highlights. No joke, my four year old tasted and loved the beet salad. In total we were there almost 3 hours and my family from out of state got an awesome and positive experience of Milwaukee in mid-January. We happily spent over $300 for our party of 6 and no one had a negative remark. To all the restaurant owners who think shaming young families downtown should be disgusted with the way we were turned away. We live and work in the city. Hats off to all the staff at B+B and we will always return.
Great food, ordered a ton of small plates and the chefs had great timing, sending things out one or two at a time to let us really appreciate each dish.
I love this place. It's so nice to have a good restaurant in the neighborhood, especially with the loss of Wolf Peach last year. We have gone here for everything -- simple bagels or breakfast sandwiches to go, brunch, and dinner. We've even purchased steaks from the front butcher shop to cook at home All of it is great. You can't go wrong here. The only thing we have difficulty with is deciding whether to take out-of-town guests to Birch + Butcher to enjoy it for brunch or for dinner. :)
Absolutely the best restaurant in Milwaukee. We are ate at Birch 2 nights in a row it was so good. Farm fresh food , great wine and amazing service. I highly recommend!
Love this new restaurant! Relaxing atmosphere with a fresh twist on some of my favorite foods. Loved the added flavor from the wood burning oven. Highly recommend the lemon financier cake for dessert! Will definitely come back again!
First of all Birch and Butcher is the only plane in Milwaukee that cooks on an open hearth and it doesn’t disappoint. The skirt stake is amazing. The parsnips, potatoes, chicken, risotto and cornbread are ridiculous. Been here 10+ times and have yet to try something I wouldn’t order again. The decor is awesome. Servers are friendly and engaged. They didn’t win best new restaurant for nothing.
I've been hesitant to go here because they didn't look very vegan friendly. Our waitress was willing to help and checked with the chef and offered plenty of choices. Including their ciabatta, sourdough, and focaccia bread options. SO happy and SO delicious. Honestly, can't wait to go back.
Excellent! We have been fortunate to eat at Birch + Butcher 2 times. Everything we had was incredible. Each dish was full of fresh flavors and executed beautifully. The cocktails are delicious. You have to try the charcuterie board, cornbread, and mussels! We will be back soon!
Was good. Had read many great Ribeye entree reviews and had probably set my expectations a bit too high. Server informed me that the meat was prepared medium rare, but it was quite thin and very medium to medium well when delivered. I should have known better to never order something medium rare. I saw the open hearth grill as a centerpiece and expected perfection in hitting a temperature which is probably unfair of me.
The best bagel and lox I have ever had, no question. For $7 I got a good sized bagel with a very generous portion of toppings. The salmon was perfect with the cream cheese, onion, greens and cappers. O will definitely be going there again for brunch and will try dinner there too. Everyone in my party greatenjoyed their food. Absolutely awesome place
Wonderful breakfast, sat at the bar and had great, attentive service. The food was outstanding and the chef has curated an great menu that features some of their wonderful bakery items. Go check out this locally owned/run restaurant, you won't be disappointed.
The food and service at B+B was excellent. I would highly recommend the sunflower seed and mushroom risotto and the 40-day aged ribeye. The portions are larger "family style," so the risotto and ribeye was plenty for the two of us. We also had this phenomenal chocolate cake with caramel mousse and candied cashews, so definitely ask about that. Get it to go if you don't have room, you won't regret it. Lastly, the ambeance was very different, but enjoyable. It is a very open concept that keeps the kitchen and the customers all together. I came home with my clothes smelling like the open hearth oven.
The food here is great, but don't let the name fool you, they no longer have a meat shop here, they should change the name to just Birch!
I really enjoyed their biscuits and gravy, and the hot ham and rolls are great! During the weekdays, the bagel sandwiches are also very good!
Good service, dxcellent fresh food. The wine list was full of good choices.
My friend and I have made this a go-to place prior to symphony outings. The line cook brought us out a nice palate cleanser on the house unprompted. We've only had a positive experience and the BBQ Parsnips have inspired my dinner partner to try a DIY at home. A great dinner outing.
My friends and I went to have dinner together. Great environment and awesome services. All dishes were well plated. The lamb tartare was our favorite. But everything else was so salty! We told the waitress the most unbearable dish and she gave us free for that one, which was very nice of her.
After checking Google reviews, I'm wondering if the chef made a mistake, using chunked salt instead of sugar? Or we ordered wrong food? Anyway, we will be back for the lamb tartare and it was amazing.
We were recommended 3-4 plates to share overall. It was nice that she could stagger them out to come one at a time. First came our bread plate (great couple of selections but definitely for more than just two people), then the amazing lentil salad (literally YUM), third was the mushroom risotto (neither of us were big fans of to be honest, just a bit bland),
Especially given the hype and cost, my husband and I found dinner at Birch and Butcher a bit of a let-down. We had the meatballs, the whitefish, and the skirt steak. I also had a cappuccino; he a couple cocktails. Flavors came off as somewhat amateur; hence, we opted not to try anything more and do dessert at home. There are better restaurants in Milwaukee with more wow factor. So, in sum, good, but we were expecting something more impressive.
Everything tasted excellent, from the generous and DELICIOUS bread plate to the meatballs and sunflower seed risotto, to the awesome pork cutlet and mushroom toast. Everything impressed. Great atmosphere and service to top it off. Not cheap, but worth the expense for a treat or nice date.
We had such an amazing time at Birch and Butcher. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was relaxing and comfortable. I tried a lot of foods that were new to me and loved every bite! Service was quick, friendly, and our waitress was very helpful with suggestions. I highly recommend!
The atmosphere is simple, with plain menus and a view of the cooks in the kitchen, even from the outside patio dining. All of the effort goes into the dishes served and does not disappoint. We started with a lamb tartare then shared the skirt steak plate as well as the steelhead trout. Everything was phenomenal.
Open hearth kitchen, so the place smells awesome. Interesting, delicious menu, especially the chicken. So far no clunkers that I've seen. Creative, thoughtful wine list. All domestic but quirky picks. No grocery store b.s. Great service. I really love it. Only knock is parking. It's not awful but no dedicated spots and no valet.
Went for coffee/small plates with friends and we couldn't have been any more pleased with the customer service. We were treated so well and got wonderful recommendations on their selection of high quality dishes. Can't wait to come back for the lox bagel sandwich!
I have loved this restaurant since it opened, especially for brunch. Last night I went for dinner for the first time since they've reopened after being closed due to the pandemic. We ate outside and all staff wore masks. Food was great and we felt very comfortable. We hope to go again before the summer is over!
A great meal. Classy but not pretentious. Delicious cocktails (we recommend the #20 & the #22). Friendly service. A unique and comfortable ambience. The chicken entree is sublime!
I’ve been there for dinner many times and it’s remarkable, today was my first time trying brunch it’s absolutely amazing. Great service and fabulous food.
Last night, 12-14-2017, my guest and I dined at Birch & Butcher. We started our meal with a decadent cheese platter adorned with fruit, pepperoni, baked bread, made on location, along with many other delightful treats. The platter was large enough for the both of us. We order appetizers to share and the trout ontrey. The Trout was cooked to absolute perfection. Desert consisted of lemon curd over cake with homemade tea ice cream. The service was right on the numbers. Not one time did we feel pressured or have to look for our sever. She definitely was paying attention to us from afar. The atmosphere is very pleasing and comfortable. I seldom write a review. I have dined in some of the finest establishments in the country and certainly all the finest in Milwaukee. Birch and Butcher just opened, without question if your reading this take advantage now before the words out. Priced Right great portions and a very creative use of fresh farm to table food. Awesome experience!!
While there check out their Butcher shop for dry aged Steaks, fresh pork, cheeses and suasage. I tried a couple of steaks a week or so ago. The prime meat was cut beyond perfection and exquisite.
Really good food (meat). Although the portion sizes are almost too big (but they're quite good about giving you a doggy bag for taking leftovers home). Beer selection is hit or miss. All microbreweries: some are drinkable, some are awful.
Classy, yet casual and relaxed- perfect date night or meet up with friends. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought in making sure every dish is creative, unique and features the local flavor of Milwaukee. I LOVE the open hearth oven! Favorite dish was the BBQ parsnips. Can't say enough-'we will be back on the monthly, maybe more!
We visited Birch + Butcher for the first time to check out their happy hour. They have a good selection of local craft beers; a favorite was the Like Minds & Birch + Butcher Dry Hopped Saison. The charcuterie plate was well-priced and absolutely delicious, with offerings from raw honey to candied walnuts, as well as cheeses and sausage. We also tried the Daily Birch + Butcher Sausage with mustard and red sauerkraut. The sausage was spicy and fantastic accompanied by the mustard and sauerkraut. The service was good and the ambiance was very nice. We look forward to returning to check out their selection of take-home items from the deli area, as well as brunch and dinner.
Amazing experience. Came here for brunch and left with artwork from a local artist on the wall and some new friends who paid for our whole meal. A+ Food, drinks, and environment.
Great food, atmosphere and friendly/knowledgeable servers. The "Rye" is like a grapefruit Manhattan- highly recommended. I went back twice in 1 week to try all the small plates. Does not disappoint.
Excellent food and staff. Rich with excellent flavor turns with every bite. Parsnips was a great choice with the charred pieces having fantastic flavor. You know right when you walk in that you'll have a great experience.
Always such wonderful service and DELICIOUS food. Recently, the B&B team prepared an amazing chef's tasting menu for my bachelorette party. Every course melted in your mouth. Had such a wonderful time!
Very good Bibb salad, ribeye, cornbread and out of this world flourless chocolate cake! Had the Bbq parsnips and skirt steak with shitake but they were just ok. Overall a great dining experience.
Fantastic food and atmosphere! 2nd time here and the service is fantastic. Each dish is unique. Had the late for an appetizer and the WI Merrell mushroom toast - very rich in flavor. Will be back very soon to try something new
Great ambience and service. Food is not that good, I did like the pretzels and cinnamon toast crunch ice cream! Recommend those, but the other 5 dishes ordered were sort of mehh. Probably won't return, but cool vibe. May be a good place to catch drinks!
