I wish I had discovered this little gem of a veggie spot on my first day in Milwaukee. This place has incredible vegetarian options and each meal exceeded my expectations. The staff and service is absolutely on point! The omelet and chili are pictured in this review. Each meal was wonderful! The restaurant has a well-stocked shop attached and I recommend taking the time to tour their selection.

I highly recommend this lovely restaurant if you are in downtown Milwaukee. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I had white bean coconut soup, the Thai coconut curry stir fry, and a coconut kale smoothie. My husband had the mushroom lasagna, vegetarian chili, and a chocolate banana smoothie. We're gonna top off this deliciousness with a poppy seed torte. It's reasonably priced and there's a parking lot in front of the building. There's also metered parking along the street. It's got a nice shop with lots of gift items and a deli.

A good place for a peaceful breakfast. Not noisy. The tables are spread out from each others. Inside or outside tables are available. Also, they have a variety of really nice food. There is a store connected as well where they sell international authentic products which has been a good idea for gifts.

OK, so be fair I didn't realize what kind of restaurant I was at - until now when Google asked me to review. It felt like a bunch of insane hippies that refused to make normal food. Ollie was INCREDIBLY helpful and worked with me to get garlic bread, apple pie and a chocolate milk. Thank you so much Ollie for being honest, and that I probably wasn't in the best restaurant for me. She was right, it's because I didn't know the area and was desperate. Food and service was great. If you're a meat and potato guy, go somewhere else. Also, the atmosphere was nice) decent but the posters on the wall explains it all. Oh and the "large" chocolate milk is a joke. Get two.

One of our favorite local spots! Grocery/deli/beer/wine/gifts plus fabulous restaurant! Can’t go wrong here for healthy reasonably price food/drink. All natural fresh ingredients for vegans to carnivores there something for everyone! Plus amazing rotating artists on the restaurant walls! Great patio right off of North Ave for outdoor dining too.

I've always wanted a chance to have lunch at this location and I was not let down. I had a delicious roast turkey sandwich with roasted tomatoes and it was fabulous. Plus the smoothies are amazing! Now as far as the atmosphere I love locations that display local art to support the local arts community. Do yourself a favor and go have lunch there sometime it's totally worth it!

Fantastic, friendly, and professional. I love that it's options for everyone. I hope they offer refills or larger glasses for drinks in the future. Thank you for recooking my son's grilled chicken. My only suggestion would be to offer a healthy seasoning option on it. My mushroom burger was flavorful! The quesadilla my other son loved. And the grilled cheese sandwich made my other son very happy. My husband had a burrito that was fantastic! We will be back! Make sure you walk through the grocery-like market they have on the other side. I bought a hibiscus and ginger ready to drink cold tea that is slap you good! But it has gifts, pet stuff, hot food, and groceries. Great place! Great location.

Have memories of Beans & Barley since I was young - about 20 years. This place brings me so much happiness because of those memories. After 20 years they are still selling my favorite sauce in the entire world - their garlic parmesan sauce. YUM. Also...don't even get me started on their peanut noodles......my favorite.

It's always a joy to go to Beans and Barley! Super great selection of grocery items, including international fair! They also have a FANTASTIC deli with some of the best roasted potatoes I've ever had. Super good burritos and sandwiches as well. Good selection of alcohol, with a nice variety of unique brands. All-in-all, a great place to stop in for a bite to eat, get a gift, it pick up some handmade, international, or artisan goodies!

Whether I'm meeting someone here for real estate or entertaining some out of town guests, I can always count on Beans and Barley's super fresh and healthy food and warm staff. The Deli has an amazing home-made vibe, and the market/gift shop is a fun way to shop for unique and healthy quality items. This place has been around since the 70's and as an old school Milwaukee East Sider, I love it here!!

Food is delicious lots of healthy options. The only meat they serve is chicken I believe. Love the menu so much and they have delicious healthy smoothies and juices. This has been a favorite restaurant of mine for years I hope the restaurant never closes.

Arrived near 5:50 on a Sunday night and was seated immediately. Ordered drinks, appetizer,, and meals at the same time. Food came before appetizer was half gone, should have ordered food last. Everything was fabulous.

Few things, that I thought is worth penning down as review. I loved the fact that they have parking space. I am one of those that like to park and not walk a mile to eat. I am not that crazy about any restaurant. I loved the fact that they have outside seating. That basically straight off avoids invisible killer COVID. After you pick your food inside and pay. They served the food at the table. 5 start for that. They replaced my coffee with hotter one. Needless to say food was great. It’s pick and go type. Just like the way I like except for I sat out and enjoyed sunny evening. There are bunch of flyers about local event at this place. I love the fact that they promote local businesses. It’s a great location right in the middle of everything so don’t mind noisy road, Cops sirens going off etc. Big thumbs up to staff working here. They are polite and friendly. I was here late summer and just when economy started to open. So there were not too many people around but still all tables outside were occupied. So, I guess you may have to wait when they are busy.

I always shop at Beans and Barley for cute and quirky gifts, am obsessed with the sweet potato and black bean burrito, and always appreciate finding locally sourced products (Space Time Coffee!!).

A Milwaukee icon -- health food restaurant with attached health food mini-market where you can find not only great desserts, fresh juiced drinks and smoothies, and hot & cold delicious prepared food, but also unique dishware, socks with sayings, and other boutique novelties. Check out the chicken salad with pine nuts and the sesame seed cake with real buttercream icing. Too yum!

Always very impressed with this place. If you're dining in, show up early and check in (it is a little out of the way and you can't really tell where to check in). The food is great and completely worth the price. I love the burritos and their desserts are heavenly but run out very quickly. I have been here many times and plan to come back many more!

Visited on a busy Saturday afternoon. I was looking specifically for vegan options, and they delivered with the food & the service. I ordered their vegetarian chili (which was not too spicy, perfect for someone who can't handle spicy food) and a garden salad. Both were delicious. They even substituted some fruit since I opted not to get the bread that came with the chili. Awesome touch of service there. What a pleasant spot for an afternoon out.

I have been here many times. Food is okay. Lots of vegetarian options, which is great.. but I ordered a side salad. I got a plate of mushrooms and lettuce. When I asked.. they said that’s just their side salad. Well, it should list that on the menu. It also took quite a long time to get our food. I was not the only person disappointed either. The “mushroom salad” that came with the grilled chicken was two whole mushrooms.. Overall, I think I’m being generous with three stars.

This was/is my favorite marketplace on the East Side for almost 15 years, but I have taken one star off because I often feel like the customer service awareness could be better. Sometimes there will be 3-5 employees behind the counter and several have their backs turned to customers. Again, I love going here, but at times it has taken us almost a half hour to order an iced coffee and that would be fine if they were understaffed, but they often seem overstaffed. We are very patient toward service staff, but having managed retail and service staff in the past, I feel like there should be an assistant manager on the floor during peak times to help facilitate some of the customer traffic and needs. Perhaps there is, but it just seems like one leadership employee could fix a lot of the perceived complacency. This is absolutely still the best place to go if you need a small grocery item, a delicious meal, remedies or medicine for times of sickness, gifts for others or self-care items, etc. The parking lot usually has a space or two in it, and the restrooms are usually average or better. I have always loved any experience I had dining in the cafe, and I have never used the beverage bar, so I would say 90% of my experiences have been on the retail side and about 10% on the dining side. All being said, I would recommend this place to anyone I know.

Lovely restaurant with an attached store. A traditional dining room, counter, and outdoor seating. American and tex-mex-ish fair with a range of protein options including meat, vegetarian and vegan offerings. All quite good. Popular for brunch as well as lunch and dinner.

The atmosphere here is wonderful. However the food is hit or miss. I'd really like to see the same recipe/presentation every time I come. Example would be their amazing veggie chili! Absolutely wonderful. Sometimes it's just a bit off. I came last weekend for another favorite, the vegan tofu Reuben Sammy and unfortunately the bread was cold and all I felt like I was eating was non flavored tofu. I wasn't super happy but the chili was on point and overall, nice people who work there... Pleasant environment... I've been coming here since I was 8-9 years old. Definitely a good spot.

Food was excellent; strawberry jam served with breakfast was delicious. Husband had the frittata - loved it. I had the veggie omelette, it and the herbed potatoes that came with it, were fabulous. Busy, but kept our coffees topped off and seated quickly at a weekend brunch time.

Food was delicious. Service was great. Very pandemic safe environment. Fajitas were excellent. My lasagna came out barely warm on the edges and cold in the middle. But they made up for it. Brought me a whole new plate of lasagna, salad and garlic bread. Unfortunately, I believe that everything on the plate was sprinkled with chopped cilantro. I hate cilantro. Service was very attentive. Kept checking in with us. I always have a comfortable feeling there, that I am eating healthy ingredients.

I love Beans and Barley. I visit every week with my sister. We are both vegetarian and appreciate all the options and overall affordable prices. The food is great; I've tried many of the dishes and haven't found one I didn't like. I'm a particular fan of the sweet potato burrito. Once in a while, they also have tiramisu which is divine. However, after having gone consistently for over half a year, I can confidently say that the service is generally quite slow. The waitstaff has always been very kind, but it can be slow...in both getting your food and getting the check. Besides this one thing though, it's not a big deal...and if you have good company the extra wait time flies by :)

During the colder months of the pandemic (winter '20-'21), I have come to trust and use Beans and Barley as a comforting sanctuary. Most customers wear masks correctly and all staff do. The staff are very friendly and positive which I so appreciate these days. Also, the deli guys are often so fashionable and colorfully dressed. They offer curbside pickup through their website or phone number. I respect the fact they closed their dining room in late fall due to rising cases. It shows they're sacrificing to help stop the spread of COVID which is not lost on me. I also loved their cheerful holiday decor. Thanks Beans for being awesome during a super tough time.

A favorite spot of mine! I drive 35 mins to get a sweet potato burrito from here. I love the cute setup inside both the restaurant and shop are neat. Great products from some good brands (including some nice local products). The food is usually great too. However, the last few times I have gotten the wrong orders and the food has been hit or miss. The first time was at the food station where I had been packed the wrong burrito, the trays were in the wrong slot. Then the time before that it was the wrong drink and sandwich at the restaurant. Not the biggest deal, they did fix it right away.

I am always excited to visit this place. Great burrito and decaf coffee, but Lots of new employees still learning the ropes. We asked for sour cream and got salad dressing! Instead of apologizing and going back for sour cream,waitress kept making excuses. Never got any sour cream Had to ask for coffee refill. Not too crowded for a Sunday. Left with a yummy piece of cake!

When you're on Milwaukee's east side, this is where you go to get a variety of vegetarian choices. Clean, well lit dining area, with friendly wait staff. I like the tempeh sandwich. myself. There is also a nice deli with many savory options. Also a small store with groceries and interesting things to buy. My go to spot for healthy eating in Milwaukee.

I love this place, and how diverse their product options are. They have food, items for the home, giftable items, and all kinds of other stuff. Lots of local vendors as well. Their deli is excellent too! The food always tastes and looks fresh. I will say, the customer service has never been terrific when I’ve been, but I usually go later in the day, so they may be tired. Otherwise, it’s a very nice local place.

I love Beans & Barley in general. The shop is super cute, the workers are very nice, and the atmosphere is beautiful. I mostly go to get takeout, and I'm sad to say that the quality varies day to day. Today we got eggs, potatoes and bagels. Both of our eggs were cold, and the potatoes tasted different than usual. Getting cold food with takeout has happened before. I love Beans and their food, but they need to step the quality of this up

One of my favorite local spots. The groceries and goods are pricey but a great variety of fun stuff. I have bought my share of great knick knacks and fine goods. Surprisingly the restaurant inside that has a lot of vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and healthy options is incredibly affordable and tasty. Also, great customer service.

Update 4-13-22 : Online delivery ordering issue on website has been fixed since last attempt! Ordered tonite and am sure it will be 10 star as have eaten inside . Thanks B&B Folks - so appreciate your goodness in Milwaukee! Sure hoped to give 5 stars however tried to use Beans & Barley online ordering for delivery: conclusion is that it is inoperable. Upon calling Beans & Barely , I was directed to Beans and Barley website , selected 'online ordering', which then displays only 'pick up ' option. As well, it says the restaurant is ' Closed' despite talking to restaurant on phone while trying to order delivery! Guess only able to do walk in service at this time. Still hopeful, I tired door Dash separate from Beans and Barley site, selecting Beans and Barley, same information : 'Closed ' ' and pick up only. Note; I also ' refreshed browser' as told to do, still didn't allow delivery option. Also note, on door Dash menu, daily specials are not listed along with some other items available on regular menu. B&B folks on phone were so nice , tried to help however they could not get it to operate correctly . Really hoped to be regular ordering customer but obstacles prohibit, hopefully Beans & Barley will get resolved !

I’ve always loved beans and barley. Great healthy food and a lot of speciality items in the store. The restaurant/ deli food is reasonably priced but the grocery/ retail items are a little high. Either way it is a nice place to grab a quick lunch or do a little convenience grocery shopping. Staff is nice but can get busy at times. Bathrooms are clean.

The staff makes this place awesome!! I ordered a last minute banana cream pie in the morning and even though they didn't have a full one in the back they made it happen!! Every time I called I was handled with care and when going to pick it up Corbin helped me out and was very friendly and helpful. Plus the pie was excellent, and everyone should get a slice at some point in their lives.

We went about a month ago, and we got take out wraps, nothing too special. We waited 45 minutes for to-go wraps that ended up coming out lukewarm and sub-par. I've had delicious food from here before. Performance was just not good the day we took out of town guests :(

I felt this was a two-star experience, but raised to three as some may have been my own fault for assumptions. Having not thoroughly read the descriptions I assumed a club sandwich would have bacon. My Turkey Club did not have the bacon that makes a club a club. More accurately it is a Roast Turkey sandwich. The $13 lunch bag comes with a compote cup sampler of potato salad and another of a fruit cup. The utensils provided are wrapped in your napkin, but it is also taped closed, so the napkin is not fully usable. Next time I will know that a club sandwich isn't really a club sandwich, and to ask for an extra napkin.

This is the first restaurant I've eaten in since covid started, they go above and beyond to make you and themselves safe and comfortable! I felt very at ease being in the building. The food was a amazing! I had a Vegan Tempeh Ruben 😘 delicious! I always appreciate multiple vegan options on a menu! I will return when I am in the area!

HIGHLY recommended. I have Celiac and cannot have gluten, and am very reactive to even the smallest amount. I’m really hesitant to try new places because i run the risk of getting sick, but i trust this place with my life. I’m here about 2-3 times a month, have never had a single dietary problem with the EXTREMELY delicious food. Staff is unbelievably sweet and helpful and it shows. The mini store attached helps keep the children i babysit occupied when we were able to dine in. From the picky-est of eaters to the bold the menu has something for everyone (and it’s affordable). Truly a hidden Milwaukee gem.

You'll leave here feeling satisfied all around! Everything I've tried so far has been great! I love all the vegetarian/vegan options & the prices! The food was good. Lots of choices including soups/sandwiches, vegetarian, and Mexican. There were some different options than you find at most places. My sister got the sweet potato and chicken burrito. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. We didn't stop at the shop side of the place, but what I did see was very cute.

My go to place for taking friends, family and out of towners. There are non vegetarian items on the menu as well. Vegan options as well! I’d recommend the vegetarian chili, or the spinach artichoke dip. You get quality food for a fair price. Open atmosphere and big windows. There is a nice sized gift shop with local and natural foods/products as well as gift items. I purchased all of the cookbooks they sell too. They have a bar area to sit as well, if you’re dining solo. Otherwise booths and tables are available in the main area. The staff has never disappointed me and as a regular they remember me and anticipate my needs. Nice sized free parking lot too, or metered parking along streets.

Great food and my dad (who has Celiac disease and can't eat gluten) was able to get gluten free bread for his sandwich. I very much appreciate the extra measures they take due to Covid. The store is filled with lots of cool stuff and instantly became a favorite. Will go back, both for dining and shopping.

We ate at the Mequon/Spur16 location and were very pleased. The grilled cheese sandwich was awesome and the cheese oozed out like lava when pulled apart. The Bean and Chicken Burrito was stuffed and grilled just right. The staff was having fun and very friendly. Their happy hour is very good and features Wisconsin seasonal favorites. Will try the Chicken Burrito next time as it has black olives and guacamole.

The wait for the restaurant may make you think twice, but trust me the wait is worth it. We try to visit every time we are in town. When we lived in MKE over 4 years ago, we would visit very frequently. The food is outstanding at all times of day. The service is always polite and friendly. The atmosphere is perhaps "trendy" but also homey at the same time. The grocery area is also fun to peruse.

This place is wonderful. I used to go there literally just for their gift section. They simply have something for everyone. However, upon trying the food, it's now a weekly routine to shop here. They have a wide selection of delicious food that is prepared in-house, and it's everything from noodle side dishes, to chili, to sandwiches. The ingredients are fresh, and the selection of food dishes is quite varied. There is a even restaurant within in case you wanted more of a sit-down dining experience.

A cozy little restaurant and charming market with specialty foods. This is a place to go when you care. When you care about what you put in your body. When you care about ingredients. When you care about where your food comes from and how it's sourced. When you care about having a good experience. The food is different from traditional fare and is consistently great, and the service is good. The sandwiches, salads and soups don't miss the mark. The black bean and sweet potato burrito is my top pick. Excellent smoothies and protein shakes too. I don't buy smoothies, juices or shakes, but I do when I go to beans and barley.

Generally a good, reliable place for breakfast. The food has always been tasty, and there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options for those who seek them; interestingly, the meat options at breakfast are rather spare. The omelets are loaded and tasty, and during weekend brunch, the leek and onion frittata is a great option. The blueberry pancakes are okay, but used to be better--not sure why the kitchen changed the recipe. Lunch options are standard sandwiches, salads, and things like that. The bakery items can be very good, and the market has a decent selection of food and gift items. Never had problems with service at the restaurant, deli, or registers.

We loved having brunch at Beans & Barley! They have so many vegetarian and vegan options. The food is delicious and service was quick. I was especially impressed by the coffee refills - my cup was never even half empty (and I drink a lot of coffee!) The portions are reasonably sized, definitely not too big. The market makes for entertaining browsing while waiting for a table, and when it is busy, you can definitely be waiting. Check out the toy section while you do.

I have always loved Beans & Barley. In terms of good food it hasn't changed much (despite the fire) in 30+ years. I live close to this restaurant/shop and frequent it when I'm looking for a quick bite. The key features here are specialty diet foods (I'm vegan and its one of the best places in Milwaukee) and high quality ingredients. You have the option of getting food from the deli for a quick to go meal or sitting down for the full menu and normal restaurant service. I would definitely recommend giving the restaurant a stop, they do have a bar and serve alcohol if you're looking to grab a drink. The food is great and the staff is friendly and helpful. The shop again has a good selection of specialty diet food items as well as general cooking supplies, craft beer, and various individual sale beverages. All in all a great stop.

This place is totally unique. Locally sourced food. You can have a delicious candlelight dinner at cafe prices. Alcohol prices help make up for that, but how much you drink is up to you. It is family friendly. Babies and toddlers abound. But back to unique--how many places combine a restaurant, bar, deli, grocery, and gift shop with a club below and an outdoor market in the summer?? And they cater too. It is a one of a kind folksy neighborhood place.

Simply amazing, and I'm not just saying that because I work there. I genuinely love eating our food and most of my coworkers. The vegetarian chili is available every day, and so good that I'm still not fully sick of it after three years of eating it weekly or more. If you're a meat eater, go for the grilled chicken sandwich, but make sure to ask what the marinade of the day is in case you'd rather have it plain. I could say so much more, but hey, I'm on the registers all the time. Just stop in and ask me!

Let me start by saying I absolutely LOVE this restaurant. The cafe is always delicious and I usually have the same waitress who is phenomenal. What I wish was better was their deli/carryout area. I usually get something to go once a week, but after today, I think I'll just stick to the cafe or pre-made deli items. My sister and I stopped in around noon on a Sunday. It was pretty busy so we ordered to go. We were told it would be about 10-15 minutes for 2 sandwiches so we decided to look around. After 10 minutes we returned to the counter and patiently waited. After 20 minutes of staring at the people behind the counter texting and ignoring us, I asked how much longer our order would be. She then gave me a stark comment, "well we already called your name..." I was so confused... the girl who took our order must've look over at us more than a couple times and never said anything! Also, I'm sure people who order carry out and are waiting for their order peruse their store as well so to not call out the name a second time after 20 minutes is just bad customer service. Like I said, I love the cafe, but if you order carry out, don't depend on their customer service.

Nice place but it seems like children are running the place. As I was purchasing something from the food bar one of the employees grabbed a fork and stuck it in the pasta bar and grabbed a bite right in front of me. Also another employee kept eating the chips and salsa sample that they had out for the customers. Highly inappropriate.

I spent a good chunk of my youth as an employee of beans, and have been a customer for the past 20 years. In terms of quality vs price you can't beat Beans! Their hot and cold deli items can't be beat. While most delis are a mayo slathered, vinager soaked mess, beans deli items are loaded with complex flavors. Their house potato salad is the staple of lunch time. Their sandwiches are great. The smoke turkey sandwich has the right mix of meat and fresh veggies, delish. Add a large garden salad and fresh carrot juice and you have a lunch that fills me up without making me feel like junk. Great food, good price. An East side staple for years. Definitely recommend.

My Wife and I and two friends visited Beans and Barley in May 2013, and were very satisfied. The menu is pretty large and full of healthy selections, including many vegetarian and vegan options - at a price so reasonable it is hard to believe. The atmophere is a open, natural and minimalist design with tons of great natural light. Coffee - bottomless cup of locally roasted coffee - very good. I enjoyed the Eggs Cubano - Scrambled eggs and cheddar served with black beans, salsa and warm flour or corn tortillas. Only $5.75!! The eggs was done just right with delicious shart cheddar cheese, and some of the best black bean I've ever had. I chose the hot salsa, which really hit the spot. Five Stars. My wife enjoyed the Granola Pancakes - which was served with real Wisconsin Maple Syrup and Whipped Butter. The pancakes were great, especially with the real syrup and butter. Located in a cool neighborhood on the North Side, I would highly recommend Beans and Barley to locals or visitors - we'll definitely return!

I went to the other side and the person behind the counter helped someone who clearly arrived after I did, she was then going to help someone else when I spoke up. I ordered 4 slices of poppyseed torte when I got home to Madison realized 3 of the 4 pieces where extra small. I have been coming to beans and barley for 23 years.
