Reviews of Heidelberg Haus
MEICHU Huang
We left Chicago at 4 am and stopped by at the Heidelberg Haus on the way back to GA at 8:32am. We were greeted by the friendly waitress. The house coffee was excellent and I had 3 cups of coffee with my breakfast. We also purchased some pastries to take home. Of course, we picked up 2 little gnomes for our garden. It was a perfect breakfast experience with excellent service! I saved some potato salad which is well seasoned and my girl was very happy to heat it up to enjoy the German potato salad!
Definitely we will stop by next time when we pass Indy. Excellent service and friendly staff. Food was delicious and yummy!

What a great find! I organized a group of us to have dinner here, and they had a nice quiet private room. It was relaxing to sit and enjoy authentic German food together. The service was quick and friendly. The food was delicious. I recommend the curry wurst or the pork chop. We definitely look forward to going back and hope you will too!

Very cool German market, full of many authentic items! I had a great, warm pretzel, with a small cup of hot mustard, the kind of hot mustard that will dissolve the lining of your nostrils if you're not careful! We also purchased a piece of German chocolate cake, and a carrot cake, both were fabulous! We had already had lunch, so we didn't try anything from the restaurant, but we'll certainly return to have something from the restaurant!

Absolutely love this place ! If I could I
Would go every day!! The environment is family friendly and they are very helpful and accommodating. We spent a good two
Hours here and they kept topping off our coffee the whole time absolutely a must everything on the menu is amazing.

Definitely worth stopping by. A very unique hidden gem with authentic German food. Reminded me of the city of Trier. The pastries were amazing! The staff were very nice and helpful Highly recommended!!!

Great place for an authentic German meal. Grab a quick lunch or even dinner. Super reasonable prices and food is excellent. Don't forget to take some pastries home that are made fresh daily starting 3am!!! We did!!!

What a gem of a place. I kept meeting people telling me they had been coming here for years, this comment was from an African American guy. I can tell several men enjoy seeing the pretty waitresses in their German outfits. This place must go wild during Octoberfest. The waitress suggest #1, and it was delicious. If I had any room, I would have had a freshly made pastry. This place made my cross country trip so memorable. I really felt welcome in Indianapolis. Thanks guys.
Jodi (Accidental Country Folk)
It was my son’s 14th birthday and he wanted German food. I got the currykraut with potato salad. It was delicious. In fact, next time I’m going to order an extra potato salad. And the price is so reasonable.
There were 8 of us and we were able to snag a private room. So if you are a big group like us, call to reserve that room!!
We celebrated with various yummy deserts.
Sara Trautvetter
I got married a while ago but never got around to giving a review. This cake was amazing!! I had over 200 people at my wedding and they loved this cake with many going back for seconds. It was super delicious.
Now every year we take our kids at Christmas and they thoroughly enjoy going to the bakery part and picking out cookies and cake for our holiday celebrations. This is such a gem and we always tell everyone to stop in and try a few things.
jennifer Simpson
Super cute place. I love all of the authentic German food and the selection of cookies. I plan to go back and eat at the restaurant
Heather Braker
What a place!! We stopped in for lunch, as my husband is a butcher & loves to make sausages- and Heidelberg Haus does not disappoint! From the bakery, knickknacks and German grocery offerings to incredible sausages served with bread & german potato salad… make sure you stop here! The staff is delightful, and Juergen Jungbauer was serenading cafe goers with his accordion. On our way out, we ran into him and expressed our thanks & delight with our visit, and he gifted us with 2 CDs of music- which we have loved listening to! We had Currywurst & Zweier. The Zweier had a Bierstube Brat and a Heildelberger.
Sabrena Martin
Great place to visit! Make sure to get there about an hour before close if you want to dine in, the kitchen shuts a half hour before close. The bakery always has fresh goodies, I haven't tried anything there I didn't like. I especially like the meringues, crunchy and airy. So many fun things to check out here! If you want to know what something on the menu looks like before ordering, there is a carry out cooler with all the varieties labeled with a corresponding menu number!
Catherine Garcia
I have lived in Indianapolis all of my life and never came here until now. This place is a gem! It's so neat and the food is very good. The pastries are amazing. I can't wait to go back with the rest of my family! This place is awesome!
Charlene Roberts
Such a fabulous experience to go through the shop and enjoy all the fun and eclectic item's. It's hours of entertainment! The food is wonderful too! Great staff and so welcoming.
Nan Van
Visited first time. Small eatery & bakery with large gift shop. German food, very fancy cakes, in a building with an overall 1960s vibe. Both of us had more food than we could finish, having ordered extra things to sample. All was good, but take note that the spicy mustard IS spicy! 😁 Quiet, cozy, fun. Would return. …

Have loved coming to the Heidelberg my entire life with my Granny and Aunt. Now when I am in town we have ventured back with my parents and my own children. We got to spend some time speaking to Jergen who so kindly shared some memories of my Granny and Aunt visiting over the years. A free cookie for the kids is still tradition and we picked up a German cookbook, some yummy bakery items and had a great German lunch! So grateful for the memories that Jergen and family have allowed us to create. Also, this is a great place to share with our kids some of their own German culture.
Erin FoxDoan
We love this little place. My husband's family has gone there for generations and I'm am lucky to be included in going now. The people are personable and fun. The food is great. The homemade desserts are AHmazing!!
Update:
Always a pleasure at the Heidlberg Haus. Tonight, we stopped in for dinner to honor and remember our grandma Ruth, who just passed and used to frequent this restaurant. We ate, had their amazing desserts, and shopped around their very eclectic store.
Jamie Dye (jj384ev)
A fun little trip in to enjoy some amazing desserts! The place is FULL of knick knacks and little treasures. Would recommend!
Heather Ratcliff
I've driven by several times and always wanted to check it out. We went today and got lunch for my birthday. The waitresses were very attentive and friendly. I got the original German brat. It was amazing. I wish I'd gotten the double. And they're right about thre potato salad...get a double order. It was fantastic. My kid got the soft pretzel with butter and it was great, too. We got a piece of the mandarin cake to take home. It was light, moist and fluffy. Super yummy. The gift shop is super fun and there's so many cool things to see. We loved all the unusual things and seeing the photos and newspaper clippings and reading about the long history of the restaurant and owner. We will definitely be going back again.
Brandon Joiner
This place is such a hidden gem here in east Indianapolis. It was closed even we arrived but we’ll be back tomorrow morning and I’ll post pictures inside the place. Awesome droid, awesome bakery. My daughter loves the baklava.
clara clara
Lovely place, been there many times drinking coffee, eating great pastry and buying homemade bread.
Vintage encounter, bar and shop, you enter in a complete different atmosphere compared to other cafes in Indy. It is genuine! Aldo German presents to buy.
You can find all kinds of people from families to elders and small groups of friend.
Brunch or lunch of sausage dishes worth the prices!
Ellen Musser
I absolutely love Heidelberg Haus! I go there to get Birthday cakes for family members birthdays. Our all time favorite is the "Death by Chocolate " it us absolutely amazing! I have literally been going to Heidelberg Haus every since I was a little kid and will carry on that tradition. Absolutely wonderful food, and amazing service!
TW Strong
Great food, always. But needs more seating. Also, it would help, if you eat here, eat and get up so others can sit down. Make sure you get dessert and try the Curry Wurst. Drink Spezi which is like orange coke, but only better.
Angela Hart
The cutest little place. Awesome pastry’s, sausage and cheeses. The owner is just lovely. Gave us a tour and spoke with us for a few. The chocolate, the chocolate, the chocolate oh my!! Don’t pass up this place when in Indy.
Melissa Reynolds
The Heidelberg Haus has so much going on. They have the bakery, restaurant, and lots of fun, authentic German treats and items. The staff is friendly and always willing to help. It's a bit crowded, especially around lunch time, so get there early. Parking is sometimes hard to find.
k. whatley (Mswhatleysworld)
This hidden gem is located on the far east side in Lawrence on Pendleton Pike ave. It's a gift shop, a museum, a bakery and a restaurant all in one! A must see for any tourist. The food is good and the service is great! The prices are good and it's a lot of fun.
Katrina Valuyeva
A hidden gem in Indiana: a storefront full of quirky items, some are for sale. You can order delicious German sausage or get some sweets from the bakery. Truly a cultural icon you must visit
FRED SMITH
Was in the Army in the 80s and the lunch I had yesterday took me back to a memory of Germany when I was there. Perfect. Curry Wurst was fantastic, and the baked goods are spectacular.
Joshua Adams
What an experience, the moment you walk in it can be a little bit hard to take it all in. Founded in the late sixties the building and furnishings shows their age. Note that it’s a bad thing, but rather that the place has been well lived. They have many small gifts and German grocery items. After looking around for a while, I placed and order. The customer service was very friendly and helpful. For everything I got I thought the price was very reasonable. The food was still hot and all the pastries were still fresh. I enjoyed the experience and plan to come back soon. I do hope they update the building and the layout as it can be rather hectic and busy (plus rather hard to weave through).
Harriet Neubert (Harriet Glenn Elea)
A wonderful little gem with so much to look at & things you just don't see anywhere around. Great food & desserts. Can't leave without taking some home. 💞 …
Chuck Baker
My wife loves gnomes and this place was a dream come true. We got the tea cookies and they were delicious. Not fancy but cozy.
Geoffrey Holtsclaw
Heidelberg Haus is a charming little (actually, pretty big now!) deli/cafe/store/restaurant in Lawrence. The moment you walk in, you're surrounded by German knick-knacks, flags, sweets, food, and everything else you can imagine. Every corner of this place opens into another cavern of German memorabilia and nostalgia. I'm sadly only in town for a couple of days to hit all the German spots, so there's no way I could gander in every nook and cranny, but this place is on my list to revisit the next time I'm in Indianapolis. Aside from the shop, the bakery looks incredible. There is a cake area with pastries and other confectionery delights, as well as a pretzel stand with various pretzel-based goods, both sweet and savory. We didn't stop there, but decided to sit at the restaurant section and order a couple of sausage meals. They come with potato salad and bread, all of which were delicious, especially while enjoying the authentic atmosphere. The service was delightful, friendly, and helpful, and the story of the shop itself was an entertaining read, and we had the pleasure of sitting next to the wall of diplomas and awards of the owners. Overall, a must-visit for German enthusiasts.
Roberto DeLaRosa
Great find! Cute shop. The food was great & delicious! Service was great too. The Frauleins were friendly and helpful! We'll be back!
Wes Weber
This is one of the best places for German food in town! If you want it authentic, you need to come here. As soon as you walk in, you're immediately immersed in all things German, from the candies and beer steins to the pastries and decor. Jenna always takes great care of us when we come in for brats for lunch. We then will end our meal with an amazing sweet treat. They have so much to choose from. Go check it out!
John Sparling
They have great strudel! Every nick-nack from your grandma's house lives here and is for sale! I only got a few pic's.
Kristy Sandlin
The food and service here is incredible! If you like German potato salad, they have the absolute best! The pastries are top notch! I highly recommend!!
Sarah “Foogs” Fugarino
A frIend suggested that I check this place out, decided today I would venture out and check it out. Located on Pendleton pike, plenty of parking around the back. You can enjoy all the gnomes and the paintings on the outside.
The inside is an explosion of German things, there’s also tables placed around the store and you can seat yourself, as well as a counter original to the store.
Menu is standard German fare, and you have the option to order a half or full size of anything.
My choice was the wieswurst, which is white German sausage, it comes with pickles, bread and butter plus some of the best potato salad I’ve ever had, it was warm! That was a first time thing for me.
After I ate i decided to check out the store, so many different German grocery items, and gifts. There is also a pastry case full of beautiful looking items, I took home an apple strudel. Awesome place, I’ll be back!
Jeff Love (Jeff Love)
Such an iconic location for me, especially around Christmas. I love their pastries and if I lived closer would have issues going too often to get their various coffee cakes and similar items.
Sarah Swanson
We love going to Heidelberg Haus. You do have to go with the understanding it is not fast food. On this visit our waitress brought our pretzels out right after we ordered them because they were coming out of the oven as she walked by. Another time, JJ (the owner) had just gotten a giant gnome he ordered. We were leaving when we saw it in the garage and had a blast talking to him about it.
Monica Bolderson
My go to place for dessert. The staff is super friendly.:) I love their german potatoes. This is not a restaurant so they only serve meals like sausages and potatoes for main courses but It's still excellent. They have several courses to choose from if you like German sausages. Although they are known for their pastries. I highly recommend them. If you are looking for a german restaurant with more main courses then edelweiss in Southport is a good place to go. Anyways, i encourage anyone who are curious about heidelberg to come to see it for yourself. It's worth the visit every single time. My husband got hooked to yodel music after visiting this place. By the way, don't forget to say hi to the owner. You will recognize him after you check out the newspaper clippings with him in it when He was young. You will know what im talking about if you do visit. He walks around the area at times and goes back to the kitchen and he is friendly.:)
HUSAM FAHMAWI
If you like verity when shop ,it's great place, like you are in Germany the cake very good I love it the check out process very friendly but only one cashier so you might wait little bid, I love it.
Erica Rose Diebold
Some of the best bakery items in Indiana, their Black Forest Cake is the best. Brats, potato salad makes a good lunch time stop too.
John Ginder
The food is made and prepared their from scratch everything is phenomenal everything from the brats, to the potato salad ,the pickles, the spicy mustard, and the baked goods. it's very affordable and nice meall that would fill you up fine and dandy and cost about $9
Gregory Howard
Upon walking in, the first thing that caught my attention was the kitsch in the restaurant- it’s fabulous (if you love kitschy German souvenirs).
I sat quickly - tables are randomly spread throughout the place - and ordered from a menu with many different styles of German sausages. They were tasty, authentic and the potato salad was also good.
It’s near 465, making it easy to get to, though it is without a lot of curb appeal - but so worth the trip!
Devon Loucks
The best German cuisine in the area. Very fun shop, so unique and very German!!!! Love it. Authentic to the T. Do yourself a favor and get extra potato salad.
Linda Hall
A very unique place! Like a big souvenir shop with a German bakery/restaurant inside. Definitely worth checking out!
Nahir Loyo
A unique, family owned, fun place to enjoy wonderful German pastries and sausages with a not-to-miss warm potato salad. The friendly staff makes you feel welcome. I try to go there every time I go to Indianapolis.
Stephen Francia
Wow...this place...you'll need a full hour just to see the STUFF they have packed everywhere! It's a shop, as well as a cafe (the soft pretzel was excellent), so go for the food, the German food/trinkets/groceries, THEN go outside to see all of the murals in the buildings! Fun roadside stop!
Jacob Crouch
I've been here multiple times and every single time I come back I experience something new from the decor or items being sold to just a generally new fun menu item probably the best place anyone's ever shown me hands down
Marisa Dimperio
Such a cute little place with amazing food and desserts. Authentic German food with great prices.
zerosen141
Tasty German pastries and cakes, as wetas a variety genuine sausages and bratwurst.
The Kassel Ripken is very good!
Britany B
Simply the best cookies I have had in years. My family was traveling to indianapolis for a convention. This place was on route. It was impossible not to stop as their outside decorations are so beautiful, and my other half collects lawn gnomes. We were able to find some unique lawn gnomes for purchase. Honestly, the best part of this was was the home made cookies. We ended up with a pound of cookies and simply, wow. They were the best cookies we've had in years. My mom, who is very into healthy eating ate a half pound of them by herself! We can't wait to come back next year!!
John Mutnansky
This quaint little shop and restaurant is awesome...if love German products and food. Very aclectic environment, friendly staff and awesome food. Definitely going again!
Keith Dillahay

First time visit, we'll be back before Christmas... cookies, pastry, cake, and tons more!! What a great place for authentic German food!!
Ryan Baird
This was my first time visiting, but it definitely won't be my last. I got 9 different pastries for the family, and I was a big fan of everything I tried. Their prices are ridiculously fair. I need to get back there and try that mandarin whipped cream cake and some sausage. There are also a lot of gnomes and other fun items to look at and purchase. I'll be back!
lovely cat
A fun and delicious experience every single time! Love shopping in the all the isles, lots of things to see and buy, from beer steins to t-shirts, toys, mugs, magnets, lots of German food, chocolates, snacks, and the sausage is delicious. Enjoy an authentic meal, homemade pastries, cookies and giant Bavarian pretzels. The staff are welcoming, friendly, helpful and fast. There are pictures by the juke box that tell a lively story of towering cakes and great times. It is absolutely wonderful!
Spike Wilson
I absolutely love this place! We go there to celebrate birthdays for my in-laws. Their food is out of this world good. Tucked away in the corner of the bakery are some soft pretzels. Crunchy on the outside and wonderfully soft on the inside. I have never had a better pretzel in my life. The sausages are great, the potato salad is pretty good, and the atmosphere it's fine and often quite funny. Even the signs in the bathrooms make you chuckle. This is a family-owned business, and I only wish it had more customers on a daily basis. Turn on the last, they are going strong, and their food is consistently excellent. I couldn't recommend them more.
Steve and Elizabeth LaFollette
Love this place - we order a Black Forest Cake for my wife’s birthday every year. The bakery and food are amazing. Must try! The shop itself is awesome too - tons of cute antiques and little things that you won’t find anywhere else that remind me of my grandparents house from when I was little.
Trent Brink
Great food, cool decor. Only complaint was lack of seating. It was busy when I was there and there weren’t very many places to sit
W.M. R.
This is a fun place to go every now and again with the family. We go for the ambiance and pastries, haven't tried the restaurant yet. The Mandarin cream cake was amazing!
Sarah Van
Best potatoes I've ever had. The currywurst was delicious. You'll find fresh baked bread and pastries in the main section of the restaurant and nesting dolls, beer steins and gnomes everywhere you look. They even have a grocery section in the back! Definitely going back as soon as I can and I would recommend it to everyone. Make sure to check out the walls, as they are covered in newspaper articles and memorabilia showing the history of the Heidelberg Haus.
Joshua
I came because I figured I was hoping they would have authentic German bread. Definitely good bread. I ordered a birthday cake while I was there because they looked so good. The person who was helping me was really helpful in helping go over their options. 10/10 on taste. Also wow it was a good price for what I got. The shop is really cool also. Definitely bringing people here.
Update: Brought my wife's mom here, who lived in Germany for some time. She loved it.
Lewana Turner
The best cakes and desserts around. The Black Forest Cake is a yearly staple for birthdays. Delicious potato salad, too!! The Berliner Monster Mett is my favorite meal- perfect for a Sunday afternoon before a nap. Good, family food and a loving environment.
Jessica Mills
What a quaint find just off 465 highway. Stopped off to find a restaurant and discovered this little gem. The bakery was amazing. Bavarian Cream filled German cake was to die for. And the shop could keep you looking at all the fun trinkets for days. if you love gnomes, this is your place.
Richard Dillon
This place is terrific. Eat here all the time.
WISH they'd add a schnitzel!
Thomas Alvey
The food was good, even with a limited menu. The bakery items were amazing, and there is literally not enough time in one visit to see everything offered!
Holly Welp
I love this place. Amazing staff, friendly and helpful, delicious food, way too temping sweets, funny signs and statues, and unique, well crafted treasures you didn't know you needed.

Iconic Indy spot, very thankful to have this place to bring my kids, it’s magical and the kids say it has their very favorite desert. Sitting at he counter for one of lunch with the staff of sweetheart ladies is a highlight too!

Weisswurst, currywurst and potato salad are simply heaven. Plus the decor is one of a kind! Loved the grocery too.

Heidelberg Haus is truly a unique one of a kind place that you must visit when you come to Indiana, the food is delicious, the gift shop has such variety.
Thank you to JJ and his family for keeping the place running for all of these years.

Hard to believe that I first went to the Heidelberg Haus 24 years ago on a high school German class trip.
Still great food and great staff, and I try to stop in every time I am back in Indy.

It's been forever since I've had authentic German food so this find was a pleasant surprise!! There's so many German items here (knick knacks, clothes, candy, food, drinks, etc)!! Let me add quite the bakery here as well!! My currywurst was spot on; potato salad was excellent; staff super friendly!!

It's your one stop gnome shop. All the tchotchkes you could ever want. The food and baked goods are incredible. Lots of hard to find European grocery items and candies.
Juan Jose S. Perez
Great pastries, German sausages, variety of dishes on the menu, nice friendly service, German nostalgia and souvenirs. Very small restaurant area.
George Dante
Bienenstich that is so good, you'll cry. That is all you need to know about this magickal land.
Go for breakfast. Get two sausages.

Debra Brewer
The coolest place I've been to in awhile food wise!. Thank you!. I'll be back for more cookies!
Hannah Strebing
Heidelberg made my wedding cake, and it was perfect! We had chocolate cake with raspberry filling and yellow cake with apricot filling— both were so delicious we couldn’t pick a favorite. We got so many compliments on it!
Robert Webster
Such a delightful slice of Bavaria right in Indianapolis. Take lots of money with you. Between the lunch style menu, the shop filled with German knick-knacks, and the bakery, you WILL be leaving money behind and taking memories with you.
Kenneth Noe
Everything there is super delicious!!! The hot brats with hot German potato salad and a pretzel is my go-to... Definitely recommend going on Saturday when they have Bienenstich (bee sting cake). All their pastries are amazing. Best croissants I've ever had there too. Great staff, my top favorite place to eat.
Brad Anderson
Quite the experience. A knicknack haven with good food. And they sell everything they serve refrigerated for you to cook at home.
I tried the original and the farmers beat and while both were good, I enjoyed the farmer's more as it was more flavorful. The potato salad was better than what you get at the Rathskeller downtown. The soda bread was very good, too.
The servers were delightful.
Kathy N Jim Pell
Cool crazy place, more German gift shop than restaurant. Lots of inexpensive meals. I would give 5 stars but didn't see any Weiner schnitzel on the menu. Definitely will go back, it's unique.
John Ginder
Incredible food, service is amazing. The spices mustard makes your nose run! Highly recommended
Mariano
I got a lead on a unique German restaurant and grocery store the other day so I decided to stop by this weekend.
The place was packed and chaotic when we arrived. It was filled with every sort of German stereotype—from Cuckoo clocks to German steins to the women in Dirndls.
Once I found out where to order, I picked up the Weiswurst and the Currywurst. Both were tasty but the potato salad was on point. Filled with bacon, chives, and a touch of vinegar, it tasted like something my grandma used to make.
If I’m in the area again, I’ll be sure to pick up some bread and baked goods.
Derek Fakehany
Delicious bakery items. Cakes, pastries, cookies, etc. Plus a German store with a wide variety of wears. One of our favorite places to go.
Faith Marie Fulner
I love this Cafe! Its so cute and so authentic and excellent staff!!
Pamela Neubauer
We stop at Cafe Heidleberg every time we drive through Indianapolis. The food is very good although a limited menu, mostly German sausage plates. The bakery items are wonderful too. I always have to make sure we have time to peruse the gift shop. It's chock full of German knick knacks, steins, candies, and kitschy items. This place makes me smile!😊
Tristan Bourne-Nisson
Friendly staff. Super kitschy shop. Tasty food. Had the German brats and potato salad and they were wonderful.
1Linda Sorrell
So interesting!!! The butterscotch cinnamon roll and pretzel were amazing!! We will be back to try some more!!!

I don't come in often. But when I do I am never disappointed. The food is always fantastic. Their sweets selection is amazing. And their cakes are the best ever.
todd merchant
Lots of trinkets to choose from. Food was great. Cookies were great. German chocolate cake was fresh & gooood.
Jestin Boone
Great food all around! The nick nack section isn't for me but neat to look around the first few times...but then for the main attraction!
Terri Steves
This place is awesome !
Great food & service !
The desserts are sooooooo yummy !
I highly recommend this place !
Five Stars for sure !
Thomas Peters
Lovely local place founded by a immigrant family. Delicious baked goods, bread and rolls. Authentic German sausages, mustards and other foods for sale. A massive collection of memorabilia, steins, gnomes, books and more. The dining portion is simple, hearty and sufficient. Overall, it's definitely worth a stop. Grab a bite at the small tables, peruse the store and take some fresh made sweets home with you!

German, kitschy fun. The best bread and seasoned bread crumbs for schnitzel you can buy. And during Christmas I always get cookies and pastries for friends and family which never fail to impress. Everything I've ever gotten here is great.
mark Im
The cafe restaurant is delicious and affordable! The bakery food is also yummy. Service was also good.
Don Kudrak
Amazing store. If you're a fan of all things German, you'll love this store. Groceries, steins, gnomes, lunch, dessert items. SOOO much to see. Very cramped so prepare to squeeze through but it's worth it. Love it! Highly recommended.
Cady Brock
Awesome treats are the best people were so nice and friendly 😊
Jessica Janicky
I've been coming here since I was a kid. Staff is never not friendly. If you see something that looks good, it is good.
Lindsey Sorg
Heidelberg Haus is amazing. Every thing there is delicious (pastries, cookies, cake, and lunch), and it's fun to look through all the unique merchandise and is a great place to pick up an interesting gift as well.
If I had a suggestion, it would be to add a drive/thru for pastry. It's totally unnecessary, but how cool would that be?!?
cynthia willis
WHAT A HOOT! Delicious food, great German atmosphere and music, mouth watering bakery (bought one each of about 15 types of cookies). Welcoming and efficient staff. A fun experience. LOVED IT. Thank you.
Mike Brinker
Wonderful sausages, beautiful cakes, filled to the brim with gnomes and other random bits and bobs!
James Frame
I buy there shiny brown rolls, also there cakes are amazing and don't leave without a slice of apple strudel, the shiny rolls are great for breakfast chop up a boiled egg and cut and fill rolls add slice of cheese M m good with cup of coffee or tea.
Angela Eads
They made our wedding cake and I ordered a second cake on our one year. Pastry chef Charlie did a fantastic job.
Lauren F
Really unique store with German food and market items. Owner is so welcoming. We enjoyed the heidelbergers and kielbasa we ordered and also enjoyed their pastries. A true gem. So glad we decided to stop on our road trip thru. Would love to come again!
Joshua Flynn
I picked up pastries for my mom on my way to visit her. I was 20 min before closing and they were very nice. They had to close early. Because of short staff and were very nice and sweet. They put in an extra pastry so it wouldn't move around in my car ride. My mom absolutely appreciated it. She's 83 and doesn't drive much so whenever I can bring her some plum cake she goes nuts. Definitely recommend it! My whole family loves it so much I ordered 3 cakes for my wedding coming up! (Recommend the fudge layer) definitely check them out!
Destinee Fitzpatrick
It was a good experience! I enjoyed the thick accents of the waitresses. It was fun, I felt like a exchange student😁 I ordered the pork chop lunch and it was wonderful. Very authentic & I would definitely go back! …
Miranda D.
Loved the food, the atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the desserts! Seating was a bit confusing, since it's scattered through the store. But well worth a special trip
Casey Zeigler
Best German Chocolate Cake I’ve ever had!
Jerry Pulley
Spent most of my career in Germany, this place is as good as it gets state side. Wonderful warm inviorment with many traditional thing's to enjoy.
Christina Hunt-Schubnell
We like going here to get some breads, danishes and other treats. We will grab lunch now and then too. Good customer service as well. My favorite is the pecan roll and the lemon cake.
Taylor Schloegel
The food is amazing and the staff is super friendly. I drive over 45 minutes just to come eat here and bring most of my friends to try it atleast once!
Amanda Budill
This place is wonderful-been coming here for so many years. The staff is wonderful, food is great! Love it here!
Dalene Hammond
I ordered a Bee Sting and an assortment of danishes. The Bee sting was delicious and the pastries were all freshly made.
David Ayers
Good REAL German lunch food! Some places claim to serve authentic German food, Heidelberg Haus delivers the real deal. Wonderful in house made bakery good, pastries, cakes and breads. They also sell some German grocery items and gift items, especially for Oktoberfest themed occasions. Good quality, fair pricing.
Micah Carr
Great little cafe lunch counter food was excellent and friendly staff. And you can wonder around in there for quite a while while waiting on your food to arrive. Fresh pastries & breads to a large counter of cakes, cookies and pies. All at reasonable prices.
Chris Hayes
This place reminds me of the small German stores I grew up with in SE Wisconsin. The bakery and food products are absolutely fantastic. I don't make it over there as frequently as I'd like, but when I'm in the area I try to stop and get a something -- VERY much worth the time and calories.
Mischell Johnson
This is an experience! The bakery, gift shop, grocery and restaurant is authentic. If you are looking for anything specialty for German traditional Christmas items, this is the place. Fantastic breads, freshly made pretzels, cakes, pastries. There is an entire display case full of Christmas cookies.
Rachel Drake
Love love love this place! It's one of my two favorite spots in Indy for authentic amazing German food. The bakery is chockfull of delicious breads and treats, and I never get out the door without getting at least a few different goodies. And the staff are an absolute delight - everyone is friendly and super helpful. 10/10!
Don Broyles
Great food and atmopshere. The staff are really friendly and the cafe id almost as much a museum of German culture as is is an eatery. The cakes made right there, are absolutely incredible.
Jessica P.
Been here a few times and I've always had a great experience, today Angie helped me pick out a cake. She was so pleasant!!!the cake is delicious.

This place is a sheer delight. Although we've only recently moved to town, we have been coming here for years on annual sojourns to Indy to visit family--we purchase mostly bakery items, but have also gotten bratwurst and German potato salad. Regardless of the purchase, we've never been disappointed and still go by regularly to make purchases. What an absolute gem of a place.
Christian Ohms
Fantastic food, cheap prices. Plenty of German goods and trinkets as well!
beck anderson
great pretzels. low key a snag. w german chocolate.
Cassandra Kormendy
I. Am. Impressed.
My grandmother was from Germany and this food is just as good. We had very full bellies and it didn’t break the bank. The gift shop reminds me of how my grandmother loved her antique items! Lol. I just loved the atmosphere and the German couple who run the show. Every time I adventure to Indy I will be stopping there! Seating is limited, but that’s part of the charm.
Jennifer Glunt
Hidden Gem on the Eastside of Indianapolis. German and European groceries, Candies, and gifts. When you walk in, you are greeted by the enchanting European sweets and breads bakery ( the soft pretzels are divine). The service is excellent. I ordered grilled cheese on rye. Mostly they serve sausages and wursts, definitely lots of pork. There are humorous and naughty gifts as well as elegant gifts such as glass ornaments. They also have a charming lunch counter with a kaffee dispensing machine. This building is painted like a fairy cottage. Very cool!
paul schork
Fun atmosphere. Good menu variety and all item were delicious. Great deserts 😊 Friendly service.
Jill Triggol
Double curry wurst in the cafe is delicious and a great price.
David Frederick
This is such a wonderful place. I've been going there for almost 40 years and have enjoyed every visit. The place is crammed with imported German tchotchkes. The tiny lunch counter is the focal point for excellent multi-wurst, German potato salad, and homemade rye bread meals. However, the bakery is the crowning achievement. Homemade pretzels, kimmelweck rolls, & strudels. Christmas time means authentic stollen and springerle cookies. You have to visit.
Will Russell
Wonderful service and amazing, delicious food. Bratwursts are #1 for a reason, but potato salad and liberwurst is also great and fresh. Pasties and cakes and cookies and packed German sweets are all delectable also.
Highly recommend kirschetort and custom cakes in the case and to order!
Cam
amazing food, amazing employees. love love love this place!
Jeremy Burger
By far my favorite bakery in this city. The cakes are extraordinary as well as everything else I have ever tried in the 20 + years my family has been going here. That satisfaction plus the unique German atmosphere make for a great visit every time and the kids think its great every time.
Carol Glazar
Great restaurant, bakery and store with German products.
Davide Hill
Quaint, cheery German-themed diner and delicatessen. Picked up some rye bread, peach streusel cake and sundry German specialties. Many varieties of wurstel and other sausages on the menu. Didn't have time to dine in but planning to come back.
Lady Zabyth
Amazing selection, friendly staff. Definitely worth a return visit for sure!
Villa “Dolly” Byam
The food was very good. The staff was friendly and helpful. So much inventory, foods and collectables.I really enjoyed it. The bakery items were so good.
Eric Keesling
Just as I remembered. 😊 Been awhile since I've been able to visit, and the hospitality and service are still top notch! One of the best selections of sweets, treats, steins, and anything else you can think of under one small roof. The lunch combos are a must try as well!
Carissa Gregory
Very unique shop, great food
emmanuel felipe
Great cakes unique ambiance authentic German cuisine
Carrie S
Always such a great place! Love the staff, the environment and the food!! Been coming here since I was a little girl! Lunch ... the #9 is amazing and a warmed pretzel with butter and spicy mustard. Their pastries are to die for... try the German chocolate pastry warmed if it's not already!
Jennifer Henderson
I definitely need to come back for lunch or dinner. I've had their pastry items, breads, cookies and cakes - all were extremely delicious. My favorite is their strudel and turnovers. The folks that work there are very knowledgeable and it is always fun to look at all the gnomes and other fun things.
Mayes White
Not sure what was going on here. Didn't get a chance to try the sausage because there wasn't much seating, but a very interesting place.
Brooke Brandon
Everything we tried was delicious! Best bratwurst I've had. The monster mett was great too. We tried some cake for dessert and took some cookies home. Every bite exceeded my expectations (even after reading other reviews about how good things were)😋
Even the shop was a feast for the eyes. And you can't forget about the fantastic service...(they, like everyone in this covid world currently, were understaffed but that didn't stop them! They gave amazing service to us and all of the other guests)
Can't wait to go back ...mouth is watering just thinking about it
Laura Barnes
Have been going to Heidelberg since it opened! They made my wedding cake, children's first birthday cakes, and all other cakes for entertaining and special events. Also, our seasonal favorite cookies are available here, and are made in the Old German way! The potato salad is the same as Gramma used to make, and I love to just stop in.
John Mcfly
This place is amazing. I have the #1 sauerkraut with the potatoes salad and it was amazing. I've never have authentic german food before and I'm very happy this was my first experience with it. The baked good are out of this world as well. I got a cheese danish and apple strudel.
Tony Tuite
Food is excellent and well priced for the portions. A wonderful fily atmosphere with toms of German and German-themed decorations and gifts. I went twice in a weekend while visiting family in the area, it was that good.
Pam
Friendly casual setting. Food was perfect. I ordered the small plate of kielbasa sausage that came with bread and German potato salad, it was delicious. I ordered a slice of the orange Mandarin cake, very very good. It was light and refreshing. Prices were excellent I received the small plates and the cake and it was just $11. I was completely full. I like piggy banks but can't find them anymore Heidelberg has a lot of piggy banks in their souvenir shop plus a lot of traditional German gifts. This was my first visit and I'll definitely be back.
Stefanie D
It's a local treasure as it is It's own little time capsule of German knickknacks, a gleeful army of gnomes, great food, epic bakery, and a staff that is always so kind, friendly, and offer such great service!
The other bonus is that the decor has not changed since I was a child, and I imagine decades before I was born. Great nostalgia for me.
Katie Nelson
They made and delivered our wedding cake. Tasted great, was very reasonably priced, and they were incredibly easy to work with! I had guests tell us how much they enjoyed dessert :)
Todd Helmold
If you are looking for a great environment as well as amazing food this is it. They have awesome German food and the warm potato salad is great. The frankfurters had the pop you are looking for, and I saw some kielbasa that another customer had that looked delicious. Will be back when in the area.
Steven Edsall
Great food old school restaurant must do experience.
Rosemarie Craycraft
Germany overload!! So much stuff, it's hard to focus. Found German Fanta in the can, fresh German Rye bread baked daily, plus Dimplmeier bread packages. Several meats in a case from. Stiglmeier. Erfrischungsstäbchen. Lots of Imported German candy. And fresh baked cakes
Bought the mandarin Sahne creme and Lemon- Raspberry roll. Both were excellent. Also had chocolate buttercream torte and a cup of coffee on site. Would go again.
Sarah Le
So much to look at and eat!
Customer service was awesome!
Will be back and I will bring family for lunch!
wierdgamerTV
Very good German food and bakery goods. However, tall people should note that the ceiling is very low. Additionally, there is not much available seating, given that most of the place is a store, mostly for German-themed products.
Mark Ventnurse
Very unique place. The pastries are made on site and always made the same day. The Black Forest and Apple Strudel are 5 stars
Abby Molino
What a jewel! This family-owned German cafe has wonderful food. They've been in business at the same location for over 50 years. The best German potato salad and brats do all the advertising they need...that and the mural on the building. And there's the German bakery. Good luck chosing one item only! In the style of a traditional German cafe, the tables are intimately tucked throughout the German gift store. We sat at table #7 beside some cookbooks, and postcards--and of course close to Gnomes and cuckoo clocks. All kinds of carved wooden art items hang overhead from the ceiling. Around the corner are German language greeting cards and old world aprons and needlework. Interesting antiques surround you-sausage grinders, beautiful floor stoves, an unusual juke box, a German yodeler wall-mounted door chime. The owner came to talk to my party of three neighbor women. Two of us were longtime customers--one by carryout, the other by frequent cafe visits over 50 years. I alone was uninitiated. But no more. I've not only dined in this delightful German cafe, but I took menu item #1--a brat (there are several types to choose from) and potato salad with rye bread and a dill pickle and HOT--and I do mean HOT!#*!--horseradish mustard, along with a real rum rum ball from the bakery AND a small gnome--home with me..all this and the tip for our great server Sabine for about 25$. I had a great time.
Jessica Benz
I have to stop here every time I'm in Indy... It's so good!!
Michael Unmann
Great German items. Have to go back to have lunch and cake!
Paul B
Charming atmosphere, friendly staff, yummy food. This place brings joy to the entire family. A special spot.
Robert Bates
What a hidden gem! It is 1/3 bakery, 1/3 restaurant, and 1/3 German novelty store. Food and wait staff were amazing. Prices were very reasonable and portions were large. Will definitely be returning.
Bob Williams
If you like German cuisine, you must try Heidelberg Haus. The food is fantastic and the desserts are exquisite. Very pleasant & professional staff provide fast & friendly service. The atmosphere is very cheerful and the prices are perfect. The quality & quantity of food is spot on. Have never left this business in an unpleasant mood. Great job Heidelberg Haus. I'll always remain a dedicated customer.
Julie R
I'm not a huge sausage fan, but the cury wurst and warm potato salad was good but MAN their cake, pastry, cookie sections were to die for! I left with 2 pieces of cake, 2 pastries and a loaf of yummy bread! So good and all the nick-nacks and German candies and everything was so neat to see. I'll be going again soon :)
Hilda Loubser
Love the curry worst and the best black forest cake!!
Dee Waite
Great atmosphere and yummy food. The desserts and pastries are to die for.
Jo Tuite
Fabulous service. Delicious food!!! We recommend the #1 and a slice of cake - you'll not regret it. Plus get some wecken to take home.
Lanny Schnipper
Very good selection of European food and gifts, with a cafe serving German food. I always get a slice of their Black Forest cake!
Brad Brown
I have enjoyed visits to the Heidlberg Haus with my grandmother on many trips to Indiana. Yesterday we visited with my children and we created new memories. The pastries and rolls are the best! This is definitely worth the stop and overall experience as you step back in time and culture.
Grant Dervishi
This place is tied with the Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers for best cake in Indiana. I also like to support veteran owned businesses. Great selection of German made gifts and hard to find European candies and sodas
J k
Amazing gem in Indy. If you have folks coming into town to visit take them to the Heidelberg Haus and then walk-off the calories at the Fort Harrison State park down the road. Try the pretzel warmed (ask for it be sliced in half with butter) order the Curry wurst, german potato salad platter and a slice of cake for dessert. German Forest Cake is amazing.
Roberta Zachidny
Had the fried pork chop with German potato salad and peach cheesecake for dessert. Meal was delicious. Training a new waitress today so service was just a bit shy of normal. Waitresses were quite personable as professional. All of the pastries looked very good and fresh. Would definitely recommend.
L Marie
Awesome place.if you want something different to experience. Check this cool place out!! All the nic naks from other countries is abundant! They have a very nice bakery.
Frank Swindler (Mobile)
Stopped in to grab some Black Forest Cake to go. Real deal German bakery! A must visit.
Adelino Esquivel
Great authentic german food great place.
It's been a long time since Ive got to come back. Heidelberg has been on point every time.
My food every single time I'm here is delicious. I usually get brats and potatoes either famers brats or monster mett eith extra german potato salad.
Dont forget THE BAKERY part! I usually get brochen to go at least 12 rolls and liberwurst too. I'm always happy to share a peice of perfect cake as well so many great desserts to choose from I always a hard choice but they are all so yummy.
This place treats you like family even after the whole covud thing they stand strong and served people delicious food and preserved as we all did !
This place is legendary and family focused. Always stop by if you can !
Faith HOVEE
is it just me or this store not changed in 27 years? I swear I remember those VHS stacks from when I was a child. Non the less this is a staple in our town and a must go see experience. Hilarious stuff pops out at you when you least expect it.
Cyndi Renicker
Not a great first impression, no greeting or hostess on duty. Arrived around 1:00 for lunch. Walked around for about 5 minutes before I asked a staff person if I could just go ahead and sit at an open table. She said yes so I found a corner table and waited for my friend to arrive. We ordered and got our food. Half way through the meal a group came in and sat at a table beside us. We were made aware that they were waiting for us to leave so they could use our table. We finished up and the waitress told us we could find another table to eat our dessert. Seriously? Since my friend and I had lots to catch up on, we did end up finding another table and having dessert. We were there for about 3 hours in all. The food was good, atmosphere was unusual, and the wait staff were nice but I did feel a bit unwelcome. I will probably go back and give it another try sometime.
Ronald Winker
Best German potato salad anywhere. Lots of stimuli with plenty of distraction, a kid could go crazy. Great German brats with mustard. Highly recommend but must hold on to your kids hands and eat cakes.
Chuck Damler
Great food. Friendly hard working staff
Jacob Zello-Dean
The food is consistently amazing. My fiance has previously gotten us several of the different types of cookies, and on a recent visit we split a pretzel, and got some black forest cake and hard rolls to take home. He and I both have enjoyed the wonderful baked goods, and we plan to get lunch there soon.
JANET BURTON
We have gone there many years. The German potato salad is the best. I love that it has a shopping area. Every year my son asks that his birthday cake comes from here.
Jessica Beck
Best German chocolate selection, amazing cakes and cookies. The Mandarin whipped cream cake is my favorite
Elizabeth Sumner
I love this place. It is not fancy or have a huge food menu, but the sausages are great. You Must take home some cookies, baked pastries, and the Pretzels are fabulous! Get the pretzels while they are warm, amazing.
Jackie Davis
If you love german food or would just like to try it, THIS is the place for you. Whenever I get homesick, I come visit here. Love, love, love the bread and pasteries, all the little nick-nacks, german groceries, and so many more things. You just have to come and see for yourself, bring time with you, there is a lot to see and you can eat here too.
Xano Lowe
So nice to feel a little part of home! We both miss Germany so much and you guys helped us feel like we were back in Germany for a little bit!
England Unlimited
Great german food with plenty of gagdets and glassware to choose from
Rick Tryon
Absolutely incredible spot. There is literally nothing like this in all of Indy. If you have never been, go once just to experience it all and take in the sights - and try some food.
They have tons of German merchandise- both edible and non-edible. If you’re afraid of gnomes, you might want to avoid parts of the store, haha. They have an incredible bakery, and a lot of authentic German food on the menu.
The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful. I would say this is one of the most unique places in all of Indianapolis and definitely a Lawrence gem!
Michael Shadwick
Maybe 5 stars next time if I can get a cannoli.. the service has been top notch every time. I got the German Chocolate treat, but usually stop in for their pretzels.
Oh.. they make awesome sausages!
Karl Matney
I so love their bakery. All their breads, cakes and cookies. Yum! TIP: their coffee cakes can sell out quickly... So go early. Their cakes are wonderful. Available whole or by the slice
Teresa Johnson
I dine here often, delicious food, great employees, love all the extras to take home like cakes ,cookies & extras . German sweets are the best!
Casie Blair
We used Heidelberg Haus for our wedding cake in May 2021. In comparison to other cake shops, Heidelberg Haus was the most reasonable in price and even more delicious! They had customizable flavors and fillings at the best price and included delivery on the wedding day. My husband and I were also glad to support this family-owned business, especially since Heidelberg Haus is the Rolls Royce of wedding cakes! They also have a restaurant and bakery in their store in Lawrence.
Bill Felker
Some amazing baked goods and friendly staff. Huge store give yourself time to look around.
Justin Shankle
The service is really friendly, their german chocolate cake is top notch, coffee is excellent, they have a lot of cool things to look at and purchase. They also have great sausages and other food. One of my favorite stops when I'm in the neighborhood.
Brittany Rodriguez
Really yummy food but the desserts are even better! The little shop was adorable and interesting to see actual stuff from Germany. Staff were friendly and helpful as well!
yerawizardjimmeh
This is such a cool place to go to! It’s family owned, and they played The Beatles in German while I went here. The grocery store was very cool to look at, and the cookies are amazing! The grilled cheese and potato salad was the best grilled cheese and potato salad I’ve ever had. My only problem was that I wish the menu had more items. Other than that, very unique place to go to for some authentic German food. :)
Warren Roberts
Today All about danish: German chocolate, pecan , cream cheese or lemon, chocolate , cinnamon bearclaw.
And cake: death by chocolate, and cherry hazelnut with yellow and chocolate cakes.
Training meeting danish only. Cake is going home but won't last long.
Always way worth it! Enjoy your favorites soon!!
Quad Wheeler
Not as much selection as I had imagined. Also not a lot of seating..7 tables. Don't know that those are negatives but you should be aware most tables are 3-4 people. Tables are spread out through the store. Also has a bar style place to eat. Food they had was great. I only deduct one star because it's pretty much sausages and potatoes salad on the menu with one sandwich. Lots of selection when it comes to the baked goods side though. Bread, pastries, cookies and cakes, and you can purchase refrigerated sausages to cook at home. All delicious with excellent service.
Mitch Rector
Such an adorably kitschy place. I love coming here for lunch, but don't expect it to be quick. There are lots of treats and knick-knacks to look at in the meantime. Menu is mostly sausages, potato salad, and bread, but they also have a bunch of pastries, cakes, and cookies. Staff are very friendly and fun to listen to.
Kristine Jenkins
My family and I love driving up here and having lunch. My personal favorite is the curry wurst, and the hot brat. Both crazy good. You can't beat their cakes and authentic pretzels. During Christmas they have amazing springerle cookies. Wish I could have them all year around. Absolutely delicious. They have a freezer section with some desserts and rolls that are half off the regular price. This place is incredible.
Kyla Ball
My first visit to Heidelberg was back in '09 with my German class for a field trip and I've taken every opportunity to come back since. The sausages are better, in my opinion, than that of fine dining german restaurants in the area and the german potato salad is by far the best I've ever tasted. No local oktoberfest grub or restaurant can beat the quality and flavor I consistently experience here. I visit at LEAST once a year, usually for my birthday or mothers day and I ALWAYS leave full and with a whole black forest cake. Id suggest bringing at least $20.00 to spend at the bakery after dinner because you're going to want to try everything! This place is worth the visit for the german imports, handcrafted trinkets and quirky german collectibles alone.
Preston Collins
It's not some mind blowing cuisine, and be prepared for mostly meat and potatoes (which I personally am fine with), but it is very good and priced fair. The ambiance is fun too, I wander around the place a bit every time I go. Probably the best praise I can give it though is a friend of mine who lived in Germany for six years, married a German lady, and just recently moved back said he was impressed how authentic it was. Can't ask for much more than that.
Jeremy Orcutt
Heidelberg Haus cakes are amazing! I have been buying cakes from here for 20 years. They are always delicious. The fresh, warm pretzels are a must try. There are thousands of items throughout this shop the taste good or will make you laugh. The staff is always friendly and helpful. One of my favorite places in the Indianapolis area.
Tina Peplinski
We love the German Chocolate cake. We used to live in Indy. Now we always make time to eat here when we visit from Florida. We just haven't been able to find something local that is as good.
Jamie Hein
We visited this cafe for lunch while in Indianapolis for the first time. The service was very kind. I loved the currywurst and potato salad! All of the servers were German I think. The gift shop/ grocery store area was fun to look around. A very cute and homey place :)
Sarah Pardue
This place is nuts, but in a good way. You can sit at the bar with a slice of cake and glass of milk, playing I-spy with the restaurant's clutter-decor. The pastries are delicious, and I recently bought an entire cake for my boyfriend's birthday. It was a 10" diameter and 4" tall German chocolate cake, for about $22 - totally worth it! They have other German staples such as a variety of bratwurst. I recommend going regardless of need, since it's just a fun interesting place to see.
Taylor Godbey
My dad used to come here as a child. He says they have the BEST German chocolate cakes! My first time in today. I spent 30 minutes looking around. Gnomes galore!!! If your German and love knick knacks, backed goods, and beer steins, this is the place for you!
Ann Houseworth
We always enjoy our visits. This time we brought my in-laws - my father has German heritage. We loved the food, brought home a cake, some cheesecake and several different kinds of brats. He was quite happy to wander the store looking at the curio items.
Tanya Most
We always have fun at the Heidelberg Haus. And we always get good food and other goodies. The staff was friendly and helpful!!
Andrew C
Been coming here since I was born and bring my kids here, awesome bakery with great German Culture everyone can enjoy.
Donna Davidson
As a restaurant, it has good food, traditional wursts with potato salad. Good service too. Only one page menu, but from my experience, it is traditional German fare. Bakery is the highlight. Many fancy cakes and layered desserts to common German cookies.
In addition to the edibles, they sell rooms of German knick knacks, groceries, and miscellany. There is also an antique bakery museum in the midst of everything else. One could spend a lot of time here looking around. It is a place to buy German goods as well as house made food.
This is our second visit here. First time was just to eat with a group of people. Today we ate lunch, got bakery items to go, and explored the rest of the place. We will return when we are again in town.
Aj Lauber
The food is always amazing, and very authentic. The baked goods will leave you drooling and are made fresh. The grocery selection is really cool, as are the random German items for sale. A fun place to spend a few hours in
Robert Schounce
I absolutely adore this place. Jurgen and the girls serve up a slice of German heaven every time I go in. Everything is top notch. I never, never NEVER eat liverwurst, but I do here. Tea so thick you can cut it and mustard that will clear your sinuses from any ailment complement this perfect rendition of the old world right here in Indiana. I cannot say enough good things about it. 6 stars on a 5 star scale.
Marc Waters
Don't be turned off by the looks of this place... it looks like a bit of a trading post but the food is wonderful.
I love the simplicity of this place. Pick your meat, get a scoop of potato salad, a pickle, and a slice of rye and it is Guten Apetit. The staff is friendly and sociable and the desserts in the case are phenomenal. Every time I go back home I give this place a visit...
Kimberley Hokanson
Finally made it. My parents have been many times over the decades. Everyone is very nice and food is wonderful.
Russ Farlow
Suggest getting the German potato salad with some to take home. Cakes and cookies are excellent as well. Lots of interesting imported items in the stores well.
Brian Powell
They have the most authentic German potato salad I've had in the U.S. Unfortunately they have a small kitchen so they are only really able to handle sausage platters. Service was very poor overall but the food was good. The danishes look better than they taste.
Chris Theisen
Sausage, potato salad and bread. Hard to beat that combo
David Surber
Great baked goods... At very good prices for hand made goodies!
david burden
Excellent German cuisine. It has a very nice gift shop and the decor is awesome. The staff was friendly and efficient. I felt the prices are great as well. Will definitely go back.
TimJ PharmDee
Great German Food. Loved our visit, highly recommended. First time I've tried currywurst; it was wonderful. Please keep up the good work!
Mike D
A fantastic place with great food and friendly servers.
I would highly recommend a visit here
Felicia D
Limited menu but good food. Wonderful pastries. Large selection of German merchandise and novelties chocolates, cookies. Good variety of packaged sausages available for purchase.
Michael Fuller
Neat little place. It's mostly a store with about a dozen tables for dining and a small menu of very delicious German fare! The sausages were cooked to perfection and the German potato salad was incredible! We had a couple deserts that were impressive as well. Would highly recommend!
Kathy Dake
Great, home-cooked food, cozy atmosphere full of antiques and collectibles, great people. Had a nice conversation with the owner who was telling us about how he started the business! Definitely recommend for German eats and a casual dining experience! (P. S. Get the pretzel with your meal!)
Tactical
Absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is cozy and the food was excellent. They were very busy when we got there as it was PJ day. So we did have to wait a little while which was fine. It gave us a chance to browse their gift shop. They have a lot of really neat knick knacks and for those who like garden gnomes... They have those too. My oldest daughter and I had the bratwurst with curried ketchup and bread with German potato salad and my youngest daughter had their pork chop meal. Both selections were excellent choices and we were happy with the taste, texture and serving size. My youngest daughter did not care for the German potato salad due to the vinegar taste, which was fine because I liked it and found it to be a welcome change from the store bought version. I traded her my bread for her potato salad and me and my oldest daughter split it between us. Our waitress was one of the owners, and she was a delight to have as a server. We also bought some desserts to go, I got the German chocolate cake. It was very rich and very tasty. To be honest, its the best I have ever had and I love cake so I have had a lot in my 42 years of life. My girls got a few different desserts of which I don't remember what they were. I was assured however, that they are to die for and I should try them at my earliest convenience. You have the option of buying a slice or the entire cake for those who are interested. They also have a selection of cookies which I have in the past, bought and found to be very delicious as well. I would recommend Heidelberg Haus to anyone looking for genuine German food. They really care about how their food tastes and looks and it is family owned which means they really want to ensure that your visit with them goes above and beyond what you would experience in a franchise restaurant. 5 stars for atmosphere, 5 stars for food and presentation, 5 stars for service, and 5 stars for meal prices. Great job Heidelberg Haus! You are definitely a breath of fresh air to anyone looking for a good meal and excellent service.

We celebrated my birthday there for lunch. So many Awesome desserts! The food was nice and the staff was very nice and helpful! Waitress was awesome, too!
RJ Dingle
What a cool store/restaurant! When you walk into the the door you are instantly transported to Germany. Right when you walk in you are greeted with hello's and German dessert cases. The restaurant seating is situated throughout the store. You seat yourself and they will find you. The food tastes homemade and is very good. The store itself is full of German souvenirs and packaged food. Great place to check out!
Billie Jo Mann
I love love love this place. Their food, cakes, cookies, breads, oh my everything is amazing. But my favorite thing is the people who work there. I've never had bad service, always been greeted with a smile and treated like a friend.
Tracey Cook
I love this place! If it's German, they probably have it. The food is delicious, the cakes are amazing! They have everything from German candies to beer steins. Definitely worth the visit.
Gregory Pierce
By far one of my most favorite restaurants on the planet.
So many great authentic German dishes to chose from, all them served fresh and hot.
The staff is amazing, friendly and on the weekends are dresses up in traditional German attire.
The store sells everything from Chocolates to fresh meat (brats) and German spices and recipe mixes.
Fletch
Absolutely adore this place! Worth the 45 minute drive Everytime. food is fresh, workers awesome, and it's a fun place to just look around as well!
Shawn McCarthy
This place is fantastic.
The have a small German restaurant with authentic dishes and desserts and a small German shop PACKED with lovely little German trinkets from elaborate steins to novelty gifts.
This place is a must visit for anyone with German heritage. I only wish there was a comparable Irish place nearby.
Tonya Perry
Such a cozy atmosphere with just the best food. They have always treated us like family every time we come in there. We love being able to shop while we wait on our food. The food is always freshly made, hot and delicious. Every time!
Michele and Bert Vargas, MD
Love all the German foods avail in the pantry aisle. Lots of german meats in the deli case. Missed out of the homemade soft pretzels as I visited in the evening. Tried 6 different cookies and a cherry strudel. The strudel was awesome as it was LOADED with fruit filling!! Soooo good!
Their Springerle cookies are the best I've found outside of homemade. They make them for Christmas and New Years. Soft and chewy inside and crispy exterior and mid level intensity of anise flavor. Perfect!!
Lots of fun knickknacks to look at.
Bergandy Jones
My first time there. Lots of intrinsic items to purvey, and I chatted with a young lady who shared interesting historical tidbits. My eyes were hungrier than my wallet, and I got $24 of pastries, while only having a $20 on me. The kind lady didn't even allow me to feel embarrassed for my oversight; she wouldn't consider allowing me to put back a pastry or two, instead she even threw in some rolls to share. I will definitely be back time and time again to support this lovely cafe, and the wonderful folks working there 😇
April Pompei
This was my first visit but definitely not my last. I purchased a death by chocolate bday cake. It was beautiful as well delicious! The pretzels were yummy too! Looking forward to trying the lunch menu.
Cassandra Trissler
So many amazing German imports, foods and knick knacks. They have amazing pretzels and great looking cakes. My parents got their wedding cake from them decades ago and they've been going strong at least since then. So many little surprises and so many shelves stocked full of interesting things. German food, baked items, music, gifts, cards, and more. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Dave Bagnall
Always a fun stop - they have outstanding baked goods, interesting food options, and the oddest collection of random stuff I have ever seen for sale in a German bakery! The people here are always friendly too; it's an eastside institution and definitely worth a regular visit.
Joe Durham
They were super busy when we went and there was no place for us to sit. So we got some dessert to go and it was freaking delicious. Hope to go back sometime when they're not so busy or get more table space so I can try the actual food.
Denise Allen
Heidelberg Haus is an older, well established (family owned and run since 1968) restaurant, bakery and gift shoppe that serves a limited selection of 1 or 2 wurst servings of bratwurst, knock wurst (with or without curry catsup,) kielbasa, liver wurst or square wurst. All are served fresh and hot with German rye bread and excellent warm German potato salad and a dill pickle spear. These lunch/dinner selections are at a very reasonable price (currently $6.98 - $8.98.) The true star here though are the fabulous baked goods. The house made cakes, strudels, cookies and specialty baked goods are very very very good. I also really enjoyed their basic brewed coffee. I take away one star for the cluttered (and sometimes obviously old and dusty) gift items on display in EVERY nook and cranny. It does give the place character... but I would prefer less clutter and more dining space.
Livy Ann
Great bakery, fun gift shop, not awesome as a café for food. The staff are all excellent and the baked goods and fun candy are tasty. The meals however are average and pretty much everything on the menu is sausage so don't expect a good vegetarian lunch if you aren't a fan of mediocre grilled cheese. Coffee is good though. THIS IS NOT IN ANY WAY HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE! The space is extremely cramped and everything is packed together. A wheelchair is impossible to maneuver here and even a walker or crutches might not fit. I have to rely on a cane and multiple braces whenever I visit. (which isn't often since its pricey anyways) I'm not sure how authentic the German part is, I have no idea.
Lady Daisy
My overall experience was good. They have a metric ton of German themed trinkets. They have a small grocery area and a nice bakery/restaurant.
Brian Emrich
I would love to give this place a higher rating, but inconsistent service is the norm. The girls working the tables are friendly, but it gets busy. The lack of seating is really bothersome. The owner needs to get rid of the decorations and add a bigger kitchen and seating areas. I can't imagine there's any money being made in dusty comedic items and German groceries. I've brought large groups here dozens of times to eat only to leave because there are no tables to sit. The food is outstanding but limited in scope. The warm German potato salad is ridiculously GOOD.
Michael Hauger
This is a great place for authentic German food! First time going, won't be the last. Service was great, food was perfect! You absolutely cannot leave without getting cookies or pastries to go!
Jackie Marker
Great place to check out and have some cake and coffee! They have amazing cake. We also picked up some little candies and mints my boyfriend has only seen in Russia. Prices are very reasonable too.
Katie Betancourt Ashley
Such a fun little family owned shop. They have a great assortment of baked goods. My husband absolutely loves their danishes. I am pretty partial to their cakes. They also sell a variety of European items. I especially love how much European chocolate the sell-the milka brand is the best. The staff is always super friendly and the prices are great! You can dine in or get your treats to go.
Roger Boughner
German bakery, diner and gift shop. One of the best in East Indianapolis. Their baked goods are great. A must visit diner with many types of German sausage and brats. Their pork chop is perfect. Everybody loves this place.
michelle enzinger
First time, loved it. Authentic german food. The service was awesome. The staff there was awesome. Highly recommend
Jan Maci
Unique ~1963 German bakery, cafe, & imported food & gift shop. Top notch baked goods & custom orders, including beautiful, yummy wedding cakes! Cafe is limited to primarily German food, brats, wursts, + sausages, served with wonderful, warm, homemade potato salad. Interesting vintage decor & many Oktoberfest items. A vast array of imported items for purchase. Don't miss this one of a kind place!
Ryan Hurford
Great place to eat and get some traditional treats. There's a reason for them being at this location for decades, they have a dedicated following of consumers who recognize the value, tradition, and pleasant service they provide. Thanks for putting a smile on my face for years and for turning my toddlers frown upside down every time we walk through the door!
Caitlin Laughlin
Small but extremely tasty plates for lunch. Bakery is to die for. Any German spices or groceries you might need are available, although they are costly. The lunch plates are inexpensive, but groceries can cost you. (I assume because they aren't in high demand and are difficult to import)
People complain about the service being slow, but even at rush I enjoy the chaos of it all. If you feel you're not getting the service you need, simply ask one of the servers. Remind them that you are there and that you require attention. They are understaffed and those who are working are always busy especially during lunch rush. They aren't rude, they are frank. Be straightforward with them and they will be with you. Quite a wonderful group of people if you ask me. I feel at home each time I'm there and leave with nothing but positive memories of Germany and a desire to go back, both to the cafe and Germany.
Nick Wilcox
Store has been a staple on the near east side for decades. Great food, desserts and atmosphere make for a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Just don't be in a hurry! This place rewards patience. The food items are made from scratch and 100% authentic. No "fusion" food here! Stay and visit the shop featuring items from Europe like beer steins, books, treats, and even grocery items. The decor is fun and feels like you're walking into a little shop in Germany.
Victoria Johnston
We were dissipointed in this restaurant, especially after having lived in Germany. Currywurst was the best thing that we tried, and we tasted several things on the menu and from the bakery .
Rhonda Clark
Love! Sooooo much to see! and the Cheescake was amazing!
Brian Mayer
Stopped in for lunch. Service was slow but not rude (I think there was only 1 server during the lunch rush during my visit). The prices are good, the potato salad is great and the bakery is fantastic. It wasn't the best experience I've ever had but I will go back; to quote a bad German joke their Wursts are the best!
M W
The food was good and authentic, and it was fun to walk around and enjoy the German knickknacks. Patstries were excellent. Since it is a first come first serve on seating, it was challenging to find seating. Service was ok for dining, but excellent at pastry counter and cash register.
Ben Brashear
This place is really cool! The desserts and pastries are delicious and they have a really nice selection of European chocolates and German gifts and friendly staff. I'll definitely be back!
Sierra Mcclellen
Wonderful authentic food, really neat place. Lots to look at. Would've given it 5 stars but it took 20 mins to get service and they only had 3 tables of customers, other than that staff was very friendly. Also cool place to shop for gnomes, fresh meats, and hard to find German stuff.
Charles Tuite
Not enough room here to adequately describe it. The menu is casual, very German, and executed with perfection and quality. I can personally recommend it all, though I generally have farmer's brat plate, with bread and butter and potato salad. Then we come to the pastries, cakes, rolls and pretzels. They are unbelievable! I've been coming here since 1985, and over that time I have likely eaten my weight just in cake. There is also a really eclectic collection of items for sale, mostly related to historic Germany, especially the Black Forest and Bavarian regions, as well as unique candies and such (as an example, cola- flavored Mentos). Come early, find a seat, and soak it all in (and don't get frustrated if it takes a bit to get your cake when you go to the display case - they are really busy a lot, but it is well worth 10 times the wait for the taste).
Jon Beder
Very interesting place.. worth the visit
Michael Zaragoza
A fascinating place , a menagerie of curiosities , a nostalgic environment of artifacts and relics , antiques , knick-knacks , and curiously small cubbyholes for small groups or a couple to sequester themselves for private yet open conversation and dining . Just overwhelming products , curios , foods , candies , pastries, from ( predominately) Germany . Food was very satisfying , well prepared and genuinely German . An overwhelming environment and ombience . German chocolate selections abound . YUMM !
Kevin Young
This is the place to go for German gifts, meals, pastries, and snacks. I usually go for the pastries. They are tasty.
Gwendolyn Martinez
Wife took me for my birthday. Derma chocolate cake is my favorite and they had one heck of a bakery. The decor and atmosphere was fantastic very nice little deli with traditional German foods.
Frank Haynes
Very good food, and awesome desserts! An excellent break in a busy day, and browsing through the international curiosities is always fun. A unique and charming place.
Veronica Leitke
Not sure what I can add that hasn't already been said about this east indy treasure. Don't come here expecting snappy service. Come ready to sit back, relax, enjoy your food in leisure, and look at all the amazing German souvenirs available. The bakery is wonderfully fresh. The curry wurst is my favorite item on the menu and don't you dare sub a dinner roll for the rye bread!
Robert Goodrich
Very crowded, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The close spces and merchandise lining the counters and walls gave the place a cozy, relaxing atmosphere. And the mandarin orange cake was awesome!
Jodie
It was a wonderful trip to Germany in there! The staff are really friendly and ready to help you. They have sooo many little trinkets and cool German antiques to look at as well as a full blown selection of food and snacks. Will definitely visit again!
Ulises Sirit
Even that we arrived right at closing time on a Saturday (5PM), they helped us select some good pastries to go. We are definitely returning (earlier) to try their meals.... and of course more pastries!!!
Ingrid Upchurch
This is one of the coziest places to eat in Indy. It is a true German style cafe. Come in and have a light meal and coffee. Enjoy the nice store and oddly satisfying clutter. The bakery is also a must if you intend to go. Bread or cookies, none disappoint. If you are looking to catch up with friends and not feel pressured into giving up your table for a while. This is that place.
Nathaniel Zarich
If you can't make it to Bavaria anytime soon head over to Heidelberg. The shopping is very charming but it's the cakes and other confections that will blow your mind. They also have a great food menu featuring German favs. Super friendly people makes its a must go place.
Daniel Roesch
Been stopping in here most of my life every time through Indianapolis. Can't beat the eclectic, yet fun atmosphere. Food is authentic German, the fresh baked bread is dynamite and the pastries are to die for.
RoyalDuggars
Sausage and deserts were great. Potato salad was flavorless mush. Service was awful. It was a Sunday, so maybe that is why--maybe busier than usual? Buy wurst, buy torte, enjoy the interesting store.
Nina Schriber
Great service, food and atmosphere!!!!! I love all the yummy pastries and German delicacies!!! The ladies working there are super friendly and sweet.
Kathleen Anderson
Been going here since I was a kid. Delicious food, kitschy gifts and knick knacks, awesome baked goods and packaged German foods. Apricot pockets are melt in your mouth. Tried a chocolate covered cherry cream puff this visit. So decadent
Terri Braun
We love this place!!! Well worth the trip.
Jonathan Sanich
When it comes to desserts, sausages and potato salad this place is the best. I usually hate potato salad, even german, but whatever they do to it, it's amazing. I would go for that alone. The coffee is also good. So if I'm looking for a good cup of coffee with some cake, this place is at the top of my list.
Jonathan Brecheisen
Excellent pretzels and sausage. Staff is fun and the service is great. Excellent place to get gifts that no-one else has. Perfect for the erosion friend or resource who has everything.
Jay Kirkpatrick
This place super rad. Great pastries and German food. The place is packed from wall to wall with super cool nik naks. You could probably go everyday for a month and discover something new. My son and I went there and our server was great and made it an even better experience.
Jamey Williams
If your are looking for authentic German cuisine look no further the potato salad is the best in the area. The atmosphere is very relaxing. They also have some of the best items in the bakery.
matthias gergan
We had to take a detour due to roadwork and stumbled on this place. And it was amazing!!! Loved the eats and coffee and the whole place is so much fun. Full of really interesting stuff. Could have spent hours there. The people are also really helpful and friendly.
Dorothy Clark
Love this place. We go for lunch of brats with German potato salad and a hearty slice of the bread. Aferwards we shop for the German foods I grew up on as well as desserts to take home.
Arlene Idlewine
Smoked pork chops heavenly. German potato salad is worth the trip. Pastries also heavenly. Great staff. Enjoy the German artifacts. Fun place to browse.
Julia Hammond
I'm a German Expat and love coming here. For the pretzels, rolls, bread, and occasionally some yummy Kuchen. Also, their selection of German canned/jarred foods is great and the prices are fair.
Shana'e Le-Poet
Always a joy to go there with my sister who loves anything Germany. The prices for the food are good the memorabilia is a bit pricey which is why you never see anything change... Only stuff added but it always has an amazing feeling to it ill come back & add pics later.
Kristin Hoffmann
Wow.. I have never really enjoyed sausage until I had Heidelberg's Hot Brats! 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟🌟 …
Iwona J Rogers
One of the things I dislike about the desserts you get at Meijer, and most places really, is the unbalanced excess of sugar in their preparations. If only there was a place to offer delicious, sweet, but not too sweet, confections and other amazing goodies. ENTER HEIDELBERG HAUS! As a Poland Native i miss the delicate balance of flavors and textures in European desserts. This place brings that all back to me.
Exquisite desserts, amazing cakes and just over all delicious food.
!!!! If it says anything, our wedding cakes will be from Heidelberg Haus this coming February 2020 !!!!
Crystal Brainerd
Its amazing! The owner is awesome! The staff goes above and beyond. A very visually stimulating place with great people and great treats all around. I will always come back here!
David Goff
I really enjoy this place. Its like one of those hidden gem of indy. From what i was told all the baked goods in there bakery around back. One of my favorite things to get is the Poppy Seed cake. And there prices are great too.
Erin Avey
My family has been getting cakes from here since before I was born. I am beyond excited to bring a new generation into this tradition by ordering my baby shower cake! Literally, they have the best cakes I've ever had. The rum fudge is to die for!
Juergen Kaiserling
This is a very unique place. The lunch I had (Kasseler Rippchen), was authentic. It reminded me of my childhood. The deli section has all good things German. There are lots of gift ideas to be purchased. The staff makes you feel like family.
marika waiters
Enjoyed the German ambience. Made me miss home!
Ramya G
I was expecting eclectic German pastries and breads after looking through the website, but the place just did not meet my expectations. If you are looking to buy basic German groceries and bakery goods in Indy, this would be the place to go! The chocolate florentines were a disappointment, but the strawberry leaf cookies and the black forest cake were worth trying.
Shawn Mynatt
The pork chop dinner was the bomb! This boiled chop with all the fixings are the way to. Never had a bad meal there yet.
Crystal Bekiares
Love to visit this german restaurant and shop. Many items to look at and a variety of baked goods to choose from.
Aisha Cargile
They do what they do very, very well. Do not expect this to be a German restaurant with an extensive menu. This a German cafe with a limited menu of tasty German eats and an eclectic collection of German... stuff, both for sale and decoration. Everyone should try this place at least once, and plan on dessert.
Laura Logue
Heidelberg Haus is an eclectic mix of tourist shop, diner, cafe, and bakery. There is always something unique to look at or someone interesting to talk to, not to mention the food is delicious if you're craving authentic German cuisine! LOVE their potatoes!!
Matt Riley
Heidelberg is always delicious. The assortment of wursts and baked goods is awesome! Amazing that it really hasn't changed in so many years. Wonderful experience as always.
John Sullivan
More a shop with some tables, than a restaurant. Find a place to sit and the wait staff will find you. Really good, authentic German food. Interesting atmosphere. Really good bakery treats. I'll be back.
Grant G.
Huge fan of HH, both as a place to grab some baked goods and for the occasional lunch. It doesn't take long to feel like home in this shop, especially if you've grown up in Indiana with German or German descended grandparents.
Couple of tips if you haven't been here before: 1) this is an informal neighborhood cafe with a strong family vibe. You won't find someone to seat you and tell you all about the specials picked out by the corporate hq. Don't be afraid. Just find an open seat, you'll be waited on by a friendly staff member as soon as possible. 2) Do yourself a favor and try the Currywurst. It's great! and 3) Make sure you save room for desert or prepare to grab some desert to take home, otherwise you're not making the most of the visit!
Alice Whitlock
This is the best bakery! Everything is sooo good!! Its hard to pick, so choose a few things. The staff are friendly and helpful. I've never had a bad experience here.
Eric Lee
Food is damn good. Have yet to have anything I don't like. Coffee and sweets are good. I would suggest always getting the cake slices. Warm environment with a bit of wackiness. Friendly staff also. It does get busy so try to hit by the place if you can. Worth every penny.
Shannon Elliott
Love everything about this place. Can sit for a meal, wander around seeing the amusing and authentic German items for sell, or just run in for freshly make pretzels, breads, pastries, cake and cookies. The ladies even dress up on Saturday in those bosom-y German dresses. This place is an Indianapolis treasure.
Joan Harrison
What a surprise!! I loved this place..I f you are looking for a little bit of Germany, this is a good place...but if you are looking for a lot of Germany than do not miss this place..You open the door and you are instantly in a small cafe that has wonderful German treats..and they are made by a trained Baker from Germany..so of you want to enjoy a bit of Germany..then you need to go to the Heidleberg Haus..you wont ne disappointed
Sonja Cline
I absolutely LOVE this place! It was quite nostalgic for me since I spent a few years in Germany myself. The food and coffee was amazing and the staff were all very friendly and helpful!
Darya Jackson
What can be better than a Weiner, hot potato salad, a pickle and a buttered slice of rye bread? Maybe a pint, but they don't serve alcohol. Absolutely delicious food, beautiful cakes and pastries, tons (and I mean, tons) of souvenirs and some German "specialitet" foods like curry ketchup and pickled carrots.
Beth Lineback
Authentic German food, staff was great and the bakery items were amazing. The cookies were my favorite. Love the service and the food!!
Dugan Julian
The Heidelburg Haus is a truly unique and delightful German cafe and bakery. It's part German heritage store, part German sausage restaurant, part German bakery. In an age of sparsely decorated cafe's with industrial interiors and a cool mellow vibe, the Heidelburg Haus is all energy and homeyness. The parking lot has German music and decorations all over, and that continues and intensifies the second you walk through the door. Gnomes, Dutch Boy and Girl decorations, Deutschland memorabilia, and all other sorts of German themed eclectic things decorate the walls, shelves and countertops. All of the wait staff were sporting German inspired dresses and interacted with the customers (many of whom were very obviously regulars and of German nationality) with various degrees of German peppered in.
There were small tables dotted throughout the Haus, in and among the shelves and tables of merchandise, where you can grab a chair for food, or you can pull up to the serving bar, which had a very limited seating capacity, but encouraged people to sit next to a stranger and enjoy the community of the place.
I tried their #17 Monster Mett sausage, which was absolutely huge and delicious. All of their meals are served with German potato salad, rye bread with butter, and dill pickle spears. The potato salad is served warm with a slice of hard boiled egg on top. I don't like potato salad, but this was absolutely delightful! Strong onion and vinegar flavors dominated, and gave the potatoes a great complimentary flavor to the sausage.
Save room for dessert, because their bakery is not to be missed. Various Streusel (I had the blueberry) are served in large portions for just over $2 a piece. There were macaroons, meringues, cookies, madelines, and on Saturdays they make a dessert called Bienenstich (or "Bee Sting" cake), which is made with a sweet yeast dough filled with custard and topped with a crust of caramelized almonds. They gave me a pro-tip of turning the massive slice upside down when serving on a plate in order to cut through everything without smashing the custard out. I reluctantly shared it with my wife after I returned home from Indianapolis. This dessert is now solidly in my top three favorite desserts of all time, and I'm convinced a second helping might send it to the #1 spot.
Heidelburg Haus is a slice of Germany in the heart of Indy's East Side. It is a welcoming, energetic, and kitchy place that anyone visiting Indy needs to try out. And if you live in the area, you NEED to become a regular!
Also, Amelia was Amazing!
Mike Barley
Great food at a reasonable price. Great sausage selection, wonderful rye bread and German potatos.
Jake Crippin
This is an amazing German bakery / grocery store / cafe! It's a place that you really have to visit if you're in the area. The bakery has too many types of authentic cookies and pastries to list. They also have crescent rolls as big as your head. You must try the "potato salad". They call it potato salad, but I'd describe it more as "fully loaded mashed potatoes". It's served warm and will make you reconsider any other potato salad that you've ever had. BEWARE OF THE GNOMES!!!
Brittany Willis
Really great bakery, excellent quality and selection. The food is good, but it's a limited selection.
The decor is overwhelming and makes it hard for servers to see people, which is why I only give it 3 stars.
Angela Vado
I love this place. The lunches are very good. The bakery is amazing. You can also shop foe items that you can't find in stores! It makes me miss Germany!
Nancy Holzhausen
Very unique German experience! You have to see it to believe it. German food, pastries, and collectibles everywhere.
Monica Gwaltney
The ambience is an experience alone but the traditional German Dishes are above average. Four stars goes the desserts!!!!!
donald nevins
The girl (jj's daughter) running the register stepped away to special treat a customer to the point that the line was 15 people deep and the crowd was getting restless. It was a little too much personal attention for such a busy day.
Ashley Sigler
The best cakes ever! So Delish! The most beautiful wedding cakes and the most affordable! Go in! They have cake samples. Such a wonderful experience. Great for lunches too! German Grocery Store, German Nick-Nacks dining rooms w/privacy for meetings and get togethers. Once of my favorite stores in the whole city!
Jill Metz
this place is like a time machine into the past! Awesome place to take kids to explore and eat some German pastries. Plan to spend some time and grab a pretzel while you take in the sights. and if you happen to be german... you may get a little teary eyed cause you are home.
Angela Novak-Bell
Excellent service very nice place to go and enjoy great dausage and baked goods. I used to live in Germany do this was the perfect place to take my dad on his bday
Missy Eltz
Our family loves Heidelberg Haus. They have the best selection of baked goods, from pastries, to breads, to cookies and cakes. The kitschy atmosphere is the cherry on top.
RevDktr Pickles
Pastries, cakes, the PRETZELS!.!
And lots of love for German heritage in this special place!
Amazing food for carry out, or enjoying there with the gnomes..
And lots of hard to find imports as well..

D.J. Heidenreich
What a delightful German gift/café. So much to look at and hard to decide what to eat. We will definitely go back.
Larry Harrison
I spent a number of years in Germany and I love to get brats like I did back then. Also their hot potato salad is great as well as the selectionof tortes, cakes and other pastries.
Melinda Crane
My absolute favorite place to go eat! The baklava is to die for, the pastries are mouthwatering, and the weiners and potato salad, this is heaven on earth! My old German friend who introduced me to the Heidelburg, said the only thing missing from this lovely place was the outside tables and German beer. Authentic, 100%.
Stacey holderread
The food was amazing! I was so excited about the cookies🙂 …
Robert Myers
A great curiosity shop, cafe, and bakery. Great German treats and wurst sandwiches in a traditional, jumbled setting. Good fun and eats for the whole family. Even better if you speak German!
chickens & games Y
Best place for German breads, sausages, pastries, and desserts. Plus, the best German potato salad in Indianapolis. Love the smell and feel of this place. You can browse or shop while they prepare your dinner.
Heidi Puckett
Many memories flooded after our visit. My Oma used to bring us as kids. Still as wonderful as I remembered. German potato salad and black forest cake. My personal favs....absolutely amazing
Becky Honn
This is a great little place. What great food and while you wait for food check out some of the great German gifts. Don't forget the Black Forest cake. It's fantastic
Nicole Hikesalot
We love the Heidelberg Haus. Been going for years there's no other place like it anywhere. Juergen and his family and staff are amazing.
David Michie
Huge selection of German groceries including my favorite soda, Spezi! A bit pricey but o.k. for a one stop German shop. Super friendly staff. Great home made cakes and sweets.
Andrew Schuler
This place is awesome! Very interesting things all around to look at, German music playing, and the food was great! The staff is very friendly and the owner is extremely hospitable. This place is going to be our new yearly road trip dinner spot when we travel to Ohio.
Heather
Loved the unique spot! Fun place to have a lunch and pick up some German treats.
Brad Stogner
The bakery is fantastic and the staff is always amazing! We drive from Louisville just to experience this place and pick up a few of the German ingredients my wife uses for cooking!
Fritty 99
Best German restaurant in the city. Friendly staff and laid back attitude. I’ve been going there since the early 70’s and still haven’t seen everything!
Chris Bowen
I cannot believe that I haven't gone to this bakery more often.

Wiess wurst was good, a bit peppery for me and a little coarse but good. What really made it for me was the German potatoe salad. Tasted just like mom used to make. Found landjager and ate a couple. They are a bit peppery too but still good. The staff works as a team, there were four waitress and all of them served us without us asking for anything. They are like a fine tuned Mercedes.

I was impressed as a historian with artifacts, media clippings and memorabilia.. I had a brat, potatoes, egg and pastries. It is a coffee shop with one person serving. Nice place to visit Deutschland memories.

We went for the German rye bread but we always end up with a piece of their delicious black forest cake and a few chocolates.

I love the Heidelberg Haus where "stressed spelled backwards is desserts." From the brats and rotkohl to the cakes, cookies, and gnomes, there is so much to love. Oh and the bathrooms are fabulously fun!

If you live in Indy this should be on your list of places to try. Intimate eating at the bar on a very well scaled to be the best menu. There is no other German potato salad on this level in Indy. Don't leave without a pretzel and some cookies to take home.
AVENGER
The best German Bakery in Indiana. Beautiful little diner to enjoy authentic German food, as well.

Got a great cake for special birthday party. Then had to add some pretzels and cinnamon bear claw for a bit of salt and sweet taste fix Love this unique family run place.

We love Heidelberg Haus because we moved to Indianapolis from the Heidelberg area of Germany. It is like going back to the three and a half years we lived there, but now we have money to spend. There's always some new kitschy German thing to buy, and the pastries and meals are great.
Andrew Newell
This place is very unique, affordable and tasty brat type food. Gift shop is fun. Cakes and pastries are tasty. Definitely worth going at least once.

A Very nice and wonderful place to be. Not like other restaurants. They make you feel welcomed and their foods are super delicious. You should definitely go too.
Levi Scotten
The foreign, crowded aesthetic of the Heidelberg Café made me fall in love with it almost immediately. The food is amazing, the bag of Wafers I bought, which were Espresso flavored, are my favorite wafers now, and the owner is such a nice guy.
Peggy Rogers
OMG! THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING!!
Love that I could by groceries there as well as gifts. The employees were very friendly.
Brian Killian
Excellent European pastries and custom Bäckerei (Wedding cake catalog will leave you drooling). Tons of German Kitsch, a typische Gästehaus menu, cafe tables and a private booth for that intimate Kaffe Klatch. Hot pretzels daily and Saturday's Bienenstich is worth a 60 mile drive.
hayden swhear
Best German food in the city hands down. Been going there for years. Great people, great food, GREAT desserts.
Amber Lore
A local treasure, full of kitsch and charm, serves up German baked good and lunches. Never disappointed when I go in.

I have been coming to the heidelburg since the mid 80s, when l got out of the military l have always had excellent food, excellent service, great staff . Reminds me of being in Germany having dinner with my grandma, aunt and uncle's at their house, makes me miss the great times l had when l was growing up over there in the 60s and 70s, thank you to the owners and staff of the Heidelberg.

Amazing, best German restaurant I have been to ever! Me and my family have been coming here for at least 10 years straight. This is an amazing restaurant, excellent service, and even better food.
Alexis Tormala
Ive been eating here for about 20 years, and they have remained consistently amazing across the board, from pricing, to the food itself, to the great waitstaff. Ill keep coming back here til they close or i die, whichever happens first!
W.T. S.
great food, mostly authentic. nice staff (that appears to be actual germans). good source for german foods/stuff. Prices are a bit high but i understand the cost of importing.
Mark Stargel
Very cluttered and packed with German items for purchase. Awesome pastries and very busy selling them. I saw people sitting around and ordering food, haven't tried that yet.
Raydensheraj
Cafe Heidelberg is definitely one of the Gems of Indiana. Fantastic Cakes, decent selection of imported German goods including Leberwurst, Curry Ketchup, Süßigkeiten etc - they also serve standard "Imbiss"-Style warm foods.
Staff is nice and I like the Autentic Bavarian dresses they wear. Why no full star rating?
The prices are ridiculous - imported or not. And that they don't carry drinks like Fanta Zitrone, Mezzo Mix etc is sad.
Ken Dixon
Definitely worth the drive! Great food and TONS of German trinkets. Also an awesome bakery with lots of authentic German goodies.
