The best Asian cuisine we’ve ever had. The best part? Staff was incredibly kind and beyond friendly. Our waiter made adjustments to our orders and provided us with what we needed. The food was even better! Every dish was mouth watering. The flavors danced in your mouth. We had a couple picky eaters in our group of 7 and even they liked it. The worst part? I don’t live closer to enjoy this restaurant more often.

Wasabi chi never disappoint. Staffs were friendly and the food were really good. I ordered sushi and sashimi and it was super good. Green salad and squid salad is also very good. The good thing about Wasabi chi is that they serve more than just sushi. They have ramen noodles and Japanese/Chinese food. Whatever you are in the mood for I bet they probably have. The atmosphere was decent.

Fav sushi spot in Johnston! I literally always order the same thing: Marilyn Monroll, spicy edamame, and white tuna nigiri. Their white tuna is the BEST white tuna I’ve ever had and I am a sushi connoisseur. Freaking delicious! It is definitely a little overpriced but it’s really good for when you want to splurge.

In Des Moines training with the USPS. My trainer Mike recommended this place for Sushi. Great recommendation, good Ramen and Sushi. The Takoyaki was different than I had before with a kinda BBQ smell and taste. But I was very happy with this recommendation.

Just went to this place last night with my girlfriend and had a pretty great experience, I loved the dimly lit ambiance of this restaurant, the booth seating close to the sushi bar, and the feel and environment of this place. We ended up ordering the spicy chicken dumplings as an App along with the miso soup and both were delicious ! Onto our entrees, she ordered the General Tsaos chicken, I ordered the Thai coconut curry cashew shrimp, spicy tuna roll, the spider roll and the crunchy king crab roll. I've eaten ALOT of sushi in my life and for places in Iowa this was some of the best sushi I've had in this state without question ! Everything was very fresh and tasted great , however in terms of that $15 king crab roll I'm not sure if I'd recommend that as the " crab meat " is shredded which threw me off, I was expecting it to come whole but either way it wasn't bad at all !! Our server was very kind and came up with a smile, she did ask how the food was, which is common and of course the food was amazing! Asked if we wanted refills and came back quickly again with a smile (: Our bill came out to $88. And some change, I tipped $32 and we left happy, our server and the staff that was around said thank you for the tip and the business (: Great place , will be coming back !

All of the food, and service we had was excellent. My only complaint is that my beer was not ice cold. Not enough to take off a star, but enough I only ordered 1🤷‍♂️ I'll be back for sure. Hopefully next time the beer is as cold as the food was tasty!

Don't let the unassuming exterior mislead you. Service here was fast and friendly. The food was good too! Though their drinks were a tad expensive and I wish they had more fried sushi options. But was all in all a solid sushi experience!

Great sushi, great service! Wasabi Chi continues to serve both with great consistency. Try the lettuce wraps for an appetizer. My Marilyn Monroll was just spicy enough and the Califirnia roll had just the right amount of avocado.

Delicious ramen. I had the kimchi ramen with pork. The broth was amazing. Also a sashimi sampler, the fish was tender and delicious. Finished with a roll that was clean, spicy and flavorful. I can't wait to come back here again!

An amazing sushi spot with great service! It's very cozy and has a very edgy interior, which I found intriguing. The staff was super nice and polite, so no issues there. It does look like it might be a tight fit if they were busy, but they are definitely worth a wait! We had lunch special rolls which were priced right: 2 for $9.95. We had spicy crab, Philadelphia, chicken tempura, and crab mango. Both served with a salad and miso soup. Next time I will try their special rolls (which looked delicious!), but I have to say that what we did have was amazing! I highly recommend the chicken tempura roll for anyone wanting to try sushi for the first time. And the crab mango was by far our favorite! It is simple but the mango and crab compliment each other. I also had their hot tea, and that was a delicious treat that felt authentic. If you haven't been here before, you must try it.

Ordered take-out and everything was well packed. The rolls all tasted so fresh, delicious and the portions were great as well! If you like lots of flavor and spiciness, I highly suggest the Marilyn Monroll!

Yummy food and fast service. We got chicken teriyaki, the sushi special (3 rolls, salmon, California, and tuna), shumai, and I got an unagi and avocado roll; salmon toro nigiri; salmon sashimi; and a salmon roll. Super delicious, all fresh and tender. The toro and unagi were the best bites! Definitely recommend if you are looking for a sit down or take out sushi restaurant in the Des Moines area.

Seems like kind of a hidden gem/location to me. Great menu options and the food and drinks were so good! Really great sushi and lots of cool flavor options for sushi. I love it here! The food and service are great. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 is because their single rolls don't explain what they are, so then you become that annoying customer asking well what's this and what's this. Other than that, awesome!

This is our go to spot in Des Moines for sushi! We have never had a bag experience or bite here. The sushi is fresh and the rice is prepared properly. Tonight our favorite appetizer was not listed. We asked about it and the chef made the off menu item for us! I cannot remember the name of the dish, but we call it the Yellowtail tuna tacos (served in a fried wonton shell) sooo good! The rolls are always spot on, and of course the sushi chefs are right out front rolling them. Tonight, for the 1st time, we tried the coconut/lemongrass soup. It is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-s!! If you have some in your group that doesn't like sushi style food, there is also enough on the menu to please them too.

I don’t know what kind of rating service they signed up for, but this place deserves a 1/5 for poor quality food. Not to mention their prices are absurd. I paid $17 for a mediocre broccoli chicken. EDIT: I went back this weekend because of a suggestion from someone that I should try their sushi instead. After revisiting, I've changed my mind; their sushi is phenomenal and (if you order a sushi special for a party of 4) the prices are reasonable. However, avoid their broccoli chicken!

Have easily been here 300 times over the last several years. Diverse seafood available each week and some of the best sushi in DSM. No better value in the metro for lunch. 3 QUALITY rolls for 12.99, can't beat it! For instance: all pictured was under 45 bucks!

Food was reasonable (as expected), service from the waitress was fair (as expected) and the portion was well served. The only problem I see is that the guys behind the sushi bar were not friendly and did not help much, not even when passing the plate. Com’on when sitting in a bar (alcohol bar, expresso/coffee or sushi bar), people are there to talk, be helped/advised/served by the “bar tender”... not to be ignored!

We've tried several sushi places since moving to Des Moines two years ago. Wasabi Chi has fresh sushi at slightly more reasonable prices than some others. Service by "CJ" was attentive and professional. While my spouse enjoyed sushi, I ordered the Thai Cashew Shrimp. It was delicious! The restaurant has a small, quiet, "adult" bar that opens in the afternoons. We'll definitely make a return visit!

This is one of my favorite restaurants when I need a sushi fix! There are two dining spaces, both are small and intimate and there is also a sushi counter to sit it. The staff has always been extremely friendly and knowledgeable, making each of my experiences well worth it. The sushi is always perfectly proportioned and there is something they do with their rice that is completely different from other places. Maybe it's just me, but I think it's different and makes such a difference for the flavor and quality of the food. Definitely recommend!

We had an amazing experience here today. The food was absolutely wonderful and service top-notch. We were greeted promptly and kindly. On our way out, we spoke to the manager and told her how impressed we were. She was grateful for the feedback and for our business. Also, our table had hand sanitizer for our use and the restaurant was very clean. I highly recommend this hidden gem in the Merle Hay neighborhood.

Absolutely delicious. I loved the takoyaki, with a lovely presentation too! The ramen was very nice, especially the eggs and pork. The soup was good as well, maybe not "notable" but not salty or plain. Good noodles. Five stars mostly because in Iowa, so, to be honest, excellent vs the local "competition".

I visited Wasabi Chi 2 years ago and revisited it after the reopening, it is still the best suchi in town. They have a new dividers between the tables. I strongly recommend it if you like raw sushi, you will love it; and if you like cooked sushi, you will love it too.

The food was good. We ordered the fried calamari for an appetizer and it was delicious! The sushi was good and the service was decent. The only thing was the waiter and hostess were on their phones during most of our time there. Otherwise I would probably go again.

I went here for a date night with the hubby. The food was good, but incredibly expensive to go for sushi alone (which is to be expected). That being said, we got the boat for two, and you are not given any choice for what you are served on the platter. In the end that choice didn't end up saving us any money and even though the fish is fresh, I didn't end up loving every bite of my food for the 70 dollar price tag, either. I feel that for a platter that is meant to be shared by two people, there also wasn't that much sushi/food, and I ended up leaving slightly hungry. Which is not incredibly acceptable for a 70 dollar meal in my opinion. And no, I am not a big eater either. Next time, I would rather just pick my own rolls and pay for them individually. All the above having been said however, I do feel that the food is of high quality and over all very tasty. It was fresh, and even though I can't give my first experience at Wasabi Chi a glowing review, I can definitely say I will probably be back (The lion's head appetizer is worth making the trip back for alone. Delicious!)

Tried for the first time about 10 days ago. Wife found something she really liked and she isnt a big sushi person. Food is excellent, service was wonderful. Everyone in there is really wonderful. I highly recommend. The Thai Spring Rolls are absolutely fantastic as well. Since the first visit we have been twice more. New favorite local Sushi place.

I've only tried sushi a few times and never liked it. It's my sister's last week in town before she moves across the country and this is where she wanted to go so I hesitantly obliged, thinking I'd be settling for something I wouldn't have liked. I wanted to try something new and ordered the Green Peace Roll. It was so incredibly delicious that I was so happy to have stepped out of my comfort zone and Wasabi Chi knocked it out of the park. The atmosphere is fantastic and the servers are so kind. I had a wonderful experience and I have to thank them for making me happy in my new food adventures. I'm writing this review just after I finished my dinner there, that is how great it was. Thank you for giving me a great last dinner here in this city with my sister.

This place used to be my go to for asian cuisine. They have raised prices and seem to have smaller portions. Still way better than anything in north des moines. If im downtown i would go for W-Tao over wasabi. But i like how close this place is. They never get food wrong. Always fresh.

Bland interior design but the food is amazing. Since I've started eating here, no other sushi comes close. Its always fresh. The service is okay . I always get two servings of their spicy crab rolls. (In case there is someone unsure of what to try). It has a slight crunch to it and is the best thing ever! Now I am a frequent customer.

Don’t be fooled by the outside!! Wasabi Chi serves up the BEST sushi in Des Moines. The Dynamite Roll is a must try! Great casual dining place for the entire family. Drinks are the bomb too! We have a great time every time we go. Love this place.

Second time eating here. Great the 1st time and just as delicious the 2nd time. Staff is very friendly and attentive. This will most likely be my go-to place for sushi now. My wife loves it too and that's a big deal because she's a bit of a sushi snob.

I struggled with two or three stars. The deciding factor was the food was tasty. The negative is an inexperienced staff from the front to the back. They do not offer a typical sushi menu, nor did the wait staff now what I was asking. The rolls were cut unevenly which shows inexperience with no oversight from a sushi chef. We asked for an appetizer, but the staff forgot.

Went here as a second choice after Lemon Grass was closed, due to a situation back in Thailand.(at least that is what the sign on the door said) So my friend and I went here. Good thing we did. This was some of the best sushi I have had here in Des Moines. And the service was very friendly. I was there on a Friday night, and even though this was their busiest times, the wait was very reasonable. The presentation was great and as previously stated, the sushi was wonderful. Definitely recommend checking this place out. Don't be afraid of going the during the peak dinner hour, they are pretty quick. And if you have to wait, it is not very long

Great menu selection! Nice cozy atmosphere. After 6pm, the place fills up quick. My husband and I enjoyed the food very much. Although I couldn't see dessert items on the menu, they do have tempura ice cream. It's delicious!

Very pleasantly surprised when I entered the dining area. This was my first time to visit this restaurant and the unassuming exterior did not give a hint of the upscale interior. From the menu and reviews Wasabi Chi is a sushi restaurant but, since we were traveling and just wanted a quick meal, we ordered entrees off the menu: hot and spicy edamame, cashew chicken and pineapple fried rice. All were quickly prepared and delicious. We will definitely be back.

Amazing sushi. Great service. I go here every week! They have a LOT of options for sushi and other food! I used to go to Wasabi on 86th by Price Chopper but decided to try Wasabi Chi and was blown away! They have enough sushi for me to try different kinds every time I go, and I've never been disappointed! Their prices are more reasonable than most sushi places & I always get my food in a short amount of time. Highly recommend the Fuji Yama roll & Marilyn Monroll.

If you think you don't like sushi, you have to give this place a chance. I haven't had a single thing I didn't like. Want to play it safe? Get the shrimp fried rice. It's served in a dome shape. Little expensive, but worth it. Expect to spend around 17 dollars/ person before drinks.

I don't like sushi, but my wife does. The calamari was delicious, and exactly how it should be! I had the angry dragon roll and the out of control roll. Even as someone who isn't a fan, I enjoyed both rolls. My wife had the spider roll and the California roll. Both of which she enjoyed. The desserts (she had green tea ice cream, I the creme brulee) were great as well. And the service was prompt, and friendly as hell.

Wow wow wow. I’ve only been here a few times in the past year or so, but every time i’m impressed. You can really tell the chefs here care about their craft. The Wasabi Chef roll is my personal favorite, and it’s just the perfect amount of sweet, sour, spicy and savory. How they do it, i don’t know. But I could not recommend this place any more. I’ve tried many great sushi joints in the Des Moines area, but this hidden gem is the place to go if you’re looking for the best!

Wonderful place, it quickly became my girlfriend's and my favourite restaurant in the area. All the food here is fantastic, they have great sushi. When friends and family come to Des Moines we usually take them to Wasabi Chi.

I am from MN & WI. This is, hands down, the BEST sushi I have ever eaten. Love love love the Des Moines roll. The foxy lady roll was also good but not better than the Des Moines roll. The other type of food are delicious as well. The Thai lettuce wrap was absolutely amazing. The chef is amazing. If I can realistically rate it, I would re-rate this restaurant a 15 out of 5. No sushi place can beat this sushi restaurant.

Wasabi Chi was our restaurant of choice today for trying something new. Definitely didn't regret it. Had the crispy brussel sprouts to start with, very tasty. Than had the pork ramen which I was thrilled with. My daughter had the chicken wonton ramen minus the vegetables (she's a teenager, good luck with that) and enjoyed it as well. Definitely recommend this location and we will be back.

But if you're going there for the food only, is definitely recommend this place. The ambience, not my taste. I might stick to the other wasabi in Johnston as of now.

Expensive, but fresh, inventive and flavorful, with a great atmosphere. I go to their restaurant in Waukee. All n' all I'm a very picky sushi girl, spoiled by some of the best sushi in LA. Wasabi and all their other locations are the only sushi restaurants that are acceptable to me. All the others I've been to (so far) serve sub standard fish, except for waterfront seafood (but they don't have other quality ingredients). If you can afford to spend between $60-$100 for two, go there.

I've had the sushi and a fish I forgot the name of. I would say that both were better at Waterfront seafood. But they do have good staff, a nice atmosphere; generally it's comfortable. I would rather go to Waterfront, but Wasabi Chi is closer and less expensive, so if you are watching your watch or holding on tight to your wallet, it's better to go here.

I visited this restaurant on my way to Omaha NE from Chicago IL. It was evening time around 6:30, it wasn't a long wait but as I was leaving, I saw a long line waiting. Japanese fried rice ( dont know exactly the difference between Chinese fried rice, but it has stronger soybean flavor) and Marilyn Monroll. Food was excellent, but the server seemed busy.

Relatively quick lunch option for me. Food is good and for what I get I believe it to be reasonably priced. My favorite is the tempura bento box. It is a lot of food for the price and comes with Miso soup. Staff is always friendly and attentive. The only thing I don't like is their parking lot. Depending on what direction you are going it can be very hard to get out.

Inexpensive but brimming with flavor and culture! You can get quite a bit of cuisine for $11. The presentation is spot on with any of the more exorbitant Japanese restaurants, nut the atmosphere is relaxed and not at all pretentious. I love all of the bento boxes, as well as the lunch entrees that I have tried so far. The sushi is first rate. I've been a fan of sushi since 1994 and have had it in Japan, most major cities in the US, and Europe and Australia. This place is on par with the best I've had. Defo check out the pork gyoza (dumpling). OUTSTANDING!

If you come here, you HAVE TO order the tuna princess AND the marylin monroll. These two rolls will hold a special place in my heart. The fish just melts in your mouth. The fish is so fresh for a midwest state. Make sure yo start off with the oysters. You'll thank me later.

Jay Wang has really cornered the sushi market in the greater Des Moines area. I'd put the sushi from any of his restaurants up against anywhere else around here. Across Wasabi Chi, Wasabi Tao, and Wasabi I've had nothing but positive experiences and killer food. Each restaurant provides a similar menu but with a different ambiance and clientele at each. Wasabi Chi is more of a hole in the wall in an old building in an older commercial neighborhood. Wasabi Tao is a bit more upscale, hip downtown place. And Wasabi is in a brand new space in Waukee to appeal to the suburban clientele. All 3 are great and I can't recommend them enough
