Today was my 1st time here and the food was delicious. The service was great and fast. I love how small and cozy retro the place was on the inside. The prices are really good too. I saw a great diversity of people enjoying this place. Gay, straight, old, young, families and all types. I tried an oreo shake and it was very good. I'd go back to say hey to the cook and 3rd generation owner Ben. Wendy was our server and great. A little extra bonus. If you love Pokémon Go, this place is a Poké Stop so stop in and give the food a try and spin the poke stop.

We have become regular customers here because of the great food, prices, staff and atmosphere! Amazing food for the prices!! We choose to eat here over Red Lobster or Panera Bread ( two we use to eat regularly) Here is a King size tenderloin we paid Less than $10 for....took two settings to eat!

Good food huge pork sandwich. Great customer service and super fast only waited for like 10min and was 6 other customers orders in too. Only reason didn’t get higher rating is wasn’t much flavor on onion rings or breading of pork loin. Could use some seasoning.

Took a day vacation to Blank Park Zoo down the road. Searched for restaurants in the area & Smitty's popped up. My family was not disappointed. Its a hole in the wall for sure. Needs to be updated on the outside which is where we ate. Food was great though, which is why we came. I ordered the chili cheese loin. My wife had a standard loin. Kids had a 15 piece nugget and fries. My only complaint was the amount of cheese curds received for the price. Overall we spent $ 32.00 & I was satisfied we got a bang for our buck. Would recommend.

This place, how do you explain the amazing food that's served here... You really can't. The obvious is that the tenderloins are amazing and huge! Jalapeno poppers were one of the best I've ever had! Service was azing and food was served fast! My only regret was getting too full and not having room for a milkshake. That's all I could hear people around us talking about. Come hungry!

Simple food, but it's served hot and delicious. Decent amount of meat in the tenderloin, and the king loin is a meal in itself. The breading was fine, reminiscent of Hunt's Drive In in Peoria. It's not a pretentious place, but neither is a good pork tenderloin, and this one was. No wonder it's been around so long. We would return if in the area and in the mood for a tenderloin.

I heard a lot of hype about Smitty's, but I got myself a king tenderloin with everything on it and onion rings and found it bland. It was underseasoned and over breaded. It did have a satisfying texture, and the onion rings had a good crunch, but not the best tenderloin in town. The cutlet itself was a good size of a little thin, and the sandwich came with a smear of mustard and some onions on the bun. I think I prefer mine a little thicker and better dressed. The atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. Certainly not the worst tenderloin.

Love supporting small businesses when I travel to New places. This mom and pop joint was a nice little find. Food was cheap and good portion. I got the chili tenderloin king size. Wish it had more chili on it but overall it was good tasting and I was satisfied.

Best tenderloin I have ever had. Light crisp breading- not too much of it. They put the 'tender' back in tenderloin. Fresh breaded onion rings. Fast friendly service. Enough for 2 meals at the price of 1. $10 for sandwich, onion rings, and pop.

Nice little place with an old Diner feel. Food was average. With the word Tenderloin in the name I was expecting a nice hand cut, hammered and battered tenderloin but it was nothing more than restaurant supply frozen tenderloins. Ok to eat there just dont expect a true tenderloin.

Food was good. Definitely a nice change of pace for me. My two issues with the King loin, were that the small size didn't come close to fitting on the bun, and that the tenderloin could have used a but more seasoning. The house made onion rings were tasty, with a perfect amount of crunch.

We get to Smitty's about once a year and it never disappoints. It's small but always clean, staff is attentive, tenderloins are fabulous. They are a slightly thicker cut, breaded and fried.

1) Sit at the barstools. The staff/owners will ensure you have a great experience. 2) Get a small tenderloin, it's still huge. 3) When ordering "everything" is ketchup, mustard, onions and pickles. 4) Yellow Cheese Curds great, White curds just okay. 5) Lettuce and Tomatoes are extra. 40 cents each and totally worth it.

Quick and cheap, if that’s what you’re after you’ll love it. I just wasn’t a huge fan of the food. Burger was just ok and the onion rings were a bit under cooked. I prefer the crisp coming from the breading and not the snap of the onion itself. I probably won’t visit again.

Came inside to eat and they were super duper swamped with take out orders that we did eventually get up and left and ate some where else. We sat for 15 mins and no one came to even get our drinks...just plain swamped is all. Nothing bad against smittys ..love eating here just not so busy.

Smitty's is a fantastic restaurant and an amazing place to snag a tenderloin. I would say it is the best tenderloin I've ever had. They offer a wide range of sides and other main dishes, including great milkshakes. It was quick to order and the food arrived soon afterward. The atmosphere is very laid back and the staff are kind and welcoming. Be prepared to be very well fed, because a large tenderloin could probably fit on 3 buns.

Took my friend from the PNW here when she said she wanted a tenderloin. I've never eaten here, but heard good things. She enjoyed her sandwich. I got the grilled chicken sandwich and it was delicious. Fried mushrooms are a rarity on menus, so I ordered them. Again, delicious. Super friendly and fast service. I'm bringing ALL my out of state visitors here!

Went for lunch around noon on a weekday and ordered the half sandwich and bacon cheese fries. The food is very bland without adding the mustard or other fixings. I would skip on the cheese fries and the cheese reminds me of the nacho cheese at movies theaters. Pork tenderloins and sandwich are very edible and you can not beat the throw back atmosphere. Passing through Des Moines and remembered Smittys, which I haven't had in about 25 30 years, does the memory and the taste match? YES!!! After all these years, this is still the best tenderloin sandwich ever made. Keep up this tradition and you will never close. Had to split it, these things are huge.

Ordered delivery by door dash. Great service. Ordered a queen tenderloin and it was meaty and hanging over the bun good. Also, ordered fries, onion rings and the onion rings were thin and delicious. Ordered large beef burger and it had great flavor, not too much pepper but just right. I haven't eaten there for years and the food was as good as I remember. We’re been wanting to come in a try a tenderloin sandwich, see what all the fuss is about. Wow! Now we understand! There are 2 sizes both are HUGE! Our waitress turned me on to a Jr size (thank goodness). Allen ordered the Queen. Then we order the onion rings and fries. What’s so good and we’ll, addicting about these sandwiches? The crunch, the tenderloin crunch then it taste SO GOOD. We asked for extra crispy fries and onion rings, delicious! Though we didn’t get a shake we watched one being made. Next time for sure. Definitely well worth our time coming in. We’ll be back Smith’s! Eat in, to go and delivery.

Oh this may look like your average breaded pork tenderloin but its not. This is a culinary space ship that takes you to a flavor galaxy far far away . I like mine with flair so I get everything with extra pickles. If your older in age and you eat here your old school and they usually go with mustered and onions. Its been around since 1952 so you know they've got staying power. The sandwhich pictured is only the regular as the large is like the USS Enterpris. Its been years since I've been able to takle that but if you try come hungry and get an order of onion rings too! I promise you that you'll be satisfied and on to chart new territory.

Giant pork tenderloin sandwiches. Great crunchy breading. Only get the king size if you are seriously hungry. Veggie adds tomato and lettuce but they only cover about a quarter of the meat area, as does the bun. Cheese curds are excellent too. We took the staff's advice and got the white curds. These appear to be real cheese curds; maybe the yellow ones aren't. Very nice people. Only downside was we sat at a table in the front of the building - was cold on a frigid Iowa night. Highly recommended if you are in the area and want a classic tenderloin.

Be sure to bring your appetite for amazing tenderloins and onion rings. Nice sized portions of great food. They were busy when we stopped by on a Saturday night but they were quick to get our orders to us and check us out.

Cozy restaurant known for tenderloins. The service was great. I ordered a Beef Burger and there was plenty of Beef Burger but it was watery and had no added flavor. Had to add mustard and ketchup to give it some flavor. I will return to try the tenderloin.

This is our favorite place in Des Moines to get tenderloins. They're on the medium to thin side in thickness, which I prefer, and their coating is deliciously buttery. They come in 2 sizes: king and queen. The queen has always filled me up and is a generous size. If you haven't eaten for a day or three, or would like to feel supremely stuffed, order the king. Their onion rings are some of my favorite in Des Moines, too.

Where do I begin? Smitty's was a fantastic experience in every aspect. The place itself was cozy and inviting, and the staff was excellent. I got the king sized breaded tenderloin and a strawberry shake. The shake was perfectly thick and textured, and it was far from being overwhelmingly sweet - something that a lot of places fail to perfect. While the flavor of the tenderloin itself wasn't remarkable, the sheer size and experience makes up for it. The experience as a whole was pleasant and enjoyable - and I will be back.

This quaint "mom-and-pop" packs a punch! Delicious fried pork tenderloins, cheese curds were yummy and onion rings were satisfying. Great customer service! Small interior so not best for large families during busy hours, but otherwise a guaranteed good meal.

Eating at Smitty's is a trip back in history to a time when the regulars are recognized by name and order "the usual". We drive across town to share a King Tenderloin and onion rings here because they are the best in the Metro area. Not fancy, but good comfort food.

I DoorDash ordered so I had it delivered, and to my surprised my orders was on time (maybe 5 minutes early) and the bag was stapled shut tight and my food hot (exactly how it should be) and the person who delivered it was also very nice. All I can say is thumbs up 👍 best tenderloins and onion rings I have ever had, golden brown crispy on the outside and soft, tender and very tasty on the inside! Delicious goodnesses with every bites! Definitely Smitty’s is my new place for tenderloins & onion rings! (Gotta try their shakes & funnel fries)

Had a great experience here. We called our order in ahead of time and it was as easy as stopping at the window to pay and grab the food. The tenderloin was amazing, two of us split the king sized one and neither of us felt like we were short on food. The staff was friendly and efficient. We didn't eat in but from what I could see the interior was clean and well kept. I can't wait to eat here again.

It was my first visit after being in Des Moines, Tenderloin was nice and so big I had to eat half 2 different times. I was expecting larger cut onion rings but they were ok, coukd have been hotter no complaints, the crew was kind. I plan on another visit.

This was our first trip to smittys. I love a good tenderloin and I was told they have one of the best. Upon pulling it you can tell it has been in the community for a long time and the building is old and run down. That did not detour me because sometimes some of the best food I have ever had has been from an old run down joint that turned out to be amazing. When walking in the inside is bigger then you think it would be. The menu is full of what you would expect. Burgers and tenderloins with some classic dinner sides and appetizers. I ordered the half tenderloin and my wife got the cheese burger. The food came out quick. The tenderloin was hot and fresh it had a great crispy breading even the half was overflowing the bun it was served with. This was all around a great trip. The whole experience had a great small town feel even while in the big city. I will for sure be back to try more then just the half tenderloin. I'm not sure if it is the best in town but it is one of the best I have found so far.

I stopped because of the sign out front. Been in business for 50 years I love to support that. Walked in Friendly clean Quick Service. I had the tenderloin is what they're known for it was wonderful reasonable. My only disappointment was that all the sides look like they came out of a bag. I'm talking about French fries mushrooms which I had they were good but out of my bag. People were eating orders will be carried out. It's fast service I would recommend it if you want a good tenderloin

What a great find! Stopped for a quick lunch on my way to the airport. Had the king tenderloin. Went with the small and I'm glad I did. The breading is perfect. The only change I would make is to skip the ketchup next time. Not needed, the flavor is better without it. On top of that, the service is excellent. Friendly staff and they took great care of me. Will definitely hit this place again when back in town.

Smitty's has been a staple of the food market in Des Moines for decades. Forget every other pork tenderloin you have ever had and go here and get a king sized. Put on it whatever you like because the chances are you will not be able to finish it. As terrific as the food is, it is second to only the quality of the staff. The business has been family run forever and if you want to feel like you are part of the family just come here for lunch.

Great tenderloin. The small sandwich is larger than the bun but is not pounded thin like some places, it was maybe a quarter inch thick. The breading was very crispy but could use a bit of seasoning. Onion rings are thin, shoestring style and the portion is large enough to share. The space is a classic diner with counter seating and open kitchen. We visited on Friday evening, they were pretty busy with dine in and carry out but the service very quick. Will definitely come here again when Im in the area.

Come on an empty stomach, or don't come at all. This place is amazing. Excellent service, nice family atmosphere, and Iowa tenderloins at their finest. The dining area is a little on the smaller side, but that's a non-issue for me. Get a vanilla shake - they're homem and delicious!

Walking into Smitty's was like walking into a diner in the past! It is small and cozy but quick and delicious. There were 4 employees keeping the busy place efficient, clean, and fun! Wendy was our happy and knowledgeable server who aimed to please. We are happy and full! Of course, Smitty's is known for the tenderloin but I asked what else do we need. Wendy recommended burgers and cutlet sandwich. We had a cutlet sandwich, small tenderloin, onion rings, French fries, soda and milkshake. All were great, but the tenderloin with French Fries were my favorite! We will be back and if you haven't been, go for it. Smitty's is a place to bring family and friends; it's just small so plan ahead with tables greater than 4.

I am a native Iowan living out of state. I have not had a good breaded tenderloin in many years. This did not disappoint. I had the king loin. It was huge. Just like I remember. Breaded mushrooms were also excellent. The loin was a little dry and the breading did fall off. It was not greasy. But I will definitely order again.

I went here on a date recently. My first time at this establishment. The taco tenderloin was delicious. The addition of chili and taco sauce added great flavor. The tenderloin & the onion rings by themselves didn't have the flavor I was expecting. They both seemed to lack flavor on their own. I popped in cuz my new ride (three days old) overheated, since it would b a minute we got a Burger and loin. I had'nt ate with the tenderloin king since 1990. It was a blast the inside of this dinner reminds me of good o.o days. The service was excellent friendly warm. Than to be served up two gorgeous sandwiches and some fresh French fries that are served hot not just grease sticks I tasted potatoes. It really meant alot to have good fast service with an employed person that seemed to like her job and was attentive...i was grief struck cuz the car three days old overheated. The food comforted my worries and than the employees took time to ask if our car had time to cool off. That was stellar the place has good people behind the magic loin that oh it's so good!

This little southside place is a local favorite. For the life of me, I have no idea why. The tenderloin, while hand-cut, is thin and poorly seasoned and the breading is what you'll find in the boxes of the cheapest tenderloins in the freezer section of your grocery store -- not what a person with functional tastebuds goes out to eat. The meat manages not to be totally dried out but the breading is dry and overcooked instead of crisp and is heavy enough to overpower the meat. The fries were similarly overdone. Seating is not comfortable, disability access poor, and the clientele are overwhelmingly tacky 1940s throwbacks. It's like eating in a very nightmarish version of Pleasantville. It's also, for what you get, more expensive than Nick's that serves truly delicious tenderloins just down the street. The best thing that can be said about it is that it is conveniently located and that the staff are nice.

I'm not a big fan. I got the chicken sandwich it came with mustard ketchup pickle and onion....i really wasn't a fan of the ketchup and mustard on it. I also got chili cheese fries with onions....i wasn't a fan of them....the chili tasted like can chili and I'm not a fan of sauce cheese....i prefer shredded (wasn't worth $5). My husband had a cheeseburger that he said was mediocre. So I'm not sure we will be back.
