Great local steakhouse. The sirloin was outstanding. Excellent steakhouse ambiance with friendly staff. It's not your cheapest option in town as most steak options are $28-35. It's a nice destination for a good, quality meal and I suggest checking out if you want a quality steak and great service!

We had a very nice server and the bartender made me a virgin drink for a very reasonable price. The spinach and artichoke dip was amazing and it wasn't too noisy, despite the fact that we were there at lunchtime! They have some vegetarian options, so just about anyone can eat here. I'll come back next time I'm in town

A group of us went to Skip's for dinner on a Saturday. We got there about 6pm and only had to wait about 20min to be seated. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very dark and intimate. Once it filled up we did find it hard to hear each other at the dinner table . We were seated in the back by a window. The table wasn't very conducive to our party size but we made it work. The waitress was very attentive and knew her stuff she was just a little rough around the edges. We ordered a plate of onion rings to get us started and they were a huge success! The plate they brought out was heaping and it had no problem feeding our group of 8 and there were some leftover. We all ordered our entrees and most of us got the salad as our side. Glad we did, the parmesan dressing is out of this world, one of the best salads I've had in a long time, not a lot of frills but what they do they do right. I am including all the pictures from our entrees. Most everything was good except for the jalapeno pasta. They have been making that for over 30 years but when we were there it really didn't have any flavor. I bet it's because jalapenos aren't in season. Overall I would say if you haven't been here go give it a try. We are going back again, this time we will wait until jalapenos are in season. 😉

Skips was the best restaurant I've had within about 20 minutes of the airport so far. The only five star meal. The Creole pasta was fantastic. The chili was good. The garlic bread on point. Would absolutely come back.

Absolutely phenomenal service and food. Julie provides fantastic service, she is so welcoming and friendly. She thrives when she busy making you never feel forgotten. We typically get their nachos which are too die for!! But last night we tried spinach and artichoke dip and shared their loaded baked potato soup. The soup was excellent!! For entrees we decided on Carbonara without mushrooms and Fettuccine Alfredo which come with salads. Their house salad dressing is honey mustard which one of my absolute favorites! The fettuccine was a little off and quite buttery but highly recommend the Carbonara! The chicken was fantastic!!

Place you must go. Drinks were great. Service was prompt and helpful. Food was incredible. Appetizers of chicken strips, firecracker shrimp were excellent. Strip sauce was next level. Pork Shank was the best. Juicy and flavorful. Great atmosphere.

This is actually the first review I’ve ever written, and I’m writing it because I feel that our experience tonight shouldn’t go unnoticed. We came in at like 9 and they close at ten, our server was Julie and she was amazing, I don’t think I’ve ever had a better server anywhere, and that means a lot coming from me because I’ve been a server myself for many years until the past few months. The food was amazing, like it has been the 3 or four times we’ve been there, steak a perfect rare, asparagus cooked perfectly, etc., that also means a lot coming from us, because my husband is an ex chef with 20plus years experience in the kitchen, and we are used to perfection at home(when he cooks 😜)When we go out to eat, we like to try the various higher end local restaurants as opposed to the chains, and of all the local Des Moines restaurants Skips is the only one we’ve been to more than twice, and I think there is only one other we’ve been to twice. Now back to the service, we were made to feel comfortable and so encouraged to enjoy our time by Julie, I was seriously amazed and I have never been so impressed. We were even those jerks who stayed past closing (but we didn’t even know it until we looked at the time ourselves), because we were treated so kindly. My experience today at Skip’s with Julie as our server really made my birthday special, and I thank the Lord for such a blessed evening ❤️ -edit: I guess I wrote a few reviews years ago and didn’t remember

Busy Saturday evening so we had about a 30 minute wait for a table of 3 at 6:30. No big deal. We all tried something new to us. Well except the onion rings that we order every time. They were delicious as always. They use red onions so they have more heat than some versions. Entrees of seafood chicken, chicken jalapeño pasta, and steak. All just as described on menu. Other visits have had chicken Alfredo, jalapeño shrimp, mussels, calamari, fish and chips. The pecan crusted chicken is great. Creamy parmesan dressing extra divine. It seems to me like they add a little spicy seasoning to everything. Personally, that's not my favorite. I like to order spicy stuff on purpose, not every single thing I eat. We like the ambience here. Dark and intimate without being so fancy you feel uncomfortable in shorts or jeans. Service is great most visits. They added more parking which is wonderful. Bill averages $100 for us because we always have an appetizer and a few drinks. You can certainly eat here for less than that. The portions are generous and we always have some leftovers to take home. We will return many times to this local gem.

This place is just perfect. Dinner for 2 or the family the food is excellent and the price is more than fair. Had a half order of onion rings for 4 of us and it was plenty cost $5.00. Dinner came with bread and butter, salad and some of the entrees had side dishes, all included in the price. I had the cavatelli and it had to be a pound and a half. Could only eat half and the cost $21.00. Great food, great service and great value and yes if you are wondering the place was packed.

I came with a group and was overly tired and not particularly hungry, so I ordered the cup of chicken soup. I prefer the stock of my chicken soup to be similar to Campbell's: thin and salty, but warming. This particular soup was the kind that was thick and had dumplings mixed in. I found it to be like swallowing strips of glue wrapped around pieces of unseasoned chicken. Given the state of the soup, why am I rating this four stars? Because while the soup was abysmal, that's hardly a reason to rate a restaurant poorly. Kathy, our server, warmly offered a free replacement of my soup to-go (as I mentioned my distaste for it when I asked for the check), but I declined. The atmosphere was pleasant and I was delighted that they actually had a sugar-free Redbull available. Not to mention that the staff was eager to accommodate our ever-increasing party despite the quickly overflowing restaurant. Perhaps the rest of the food would have been more to my liking, but I definitely would give the restaurant another try if I were in the area. At least they're making an attempt.

The not-so-good: the host skipped past our name on the list resulting an extended wait. Yes, we could see the names after ours that were crossed out. Yes, parties of the same size. When we did get seated, it was near the door, which was annoying. The good: the waitress was excellent; helpful and just the right amount of attentive. The jalapeño shrimp were AMAZING. The pear mint martini was a treat. Will absolutely eat here again, but will be more watchful of the seating situation.

Went for a business lunch (yes those still happen), ordered the jalapeno chicken pasta because it's amazing, that plus the garlic bread was perfect as I kept half the pasta for lunch the next day. The other order was the BBQ prime rib sandwich which I was told was fantastic. If you haven't been here you really should, its a gem!

We saw an ad in the local hotel with a suggestion for this. We came on a Friday night and waited about 15 minutes to be seated. The food was Amazing. We started with nachos then I had the chicken carbonara. The sauce was full of flavor and was rich and thick. Our server Jasmine was friendly and delivered an excellent visit. If you are in the area I would recommend Skip's on your list of to visit restaurants.

The food and service here is outstanding no matter what time of day you visit. The lighting is a bit dim but understandable since it is similar to a supper club. The atmosphere is calm and intimate. Drinks are well mixed also.

On first appearance... I was gonna turn around. On the outside it looks like a funeral home that has just been restored. On the inside the lights were very low. The bar was packed. The tables were close but there was enough room for your party. 🤔 We stayed. The New York strip was medium well, juicy, and lightly seasoned, I truly enjoyed it. The bread was warm, salad fresh, and appetizers - sufficient in quality and quantity. Everyone enjoyed their food. The ribs were excellent. It's moderately pricey; Around $23-30 per plate. Definitely and unexpected surprise. The service was pleasant and accommodating. We could eat here about two to three times a week!!! The food and time shared were extraordinarily memorable.

Skips is delicious. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. I wanted to try the nachos as i have heard good things. Lots of cheese for sure on top. Chicken and black beans had good flavor. But honestly, they were kind of dry if you know what i mean. They give you a small cup of sour cream and salsa. Which I could have easily used 4 of em to make the nachos a bit creamier. The cheese on top hardens as well so you have to literally rip the cheese and place it on a chip. Still good...but imma go to francies next time when I'm craving nachos. Wife had the tilapia which was amazing for sure.

Haven't been to Skips in so long, so we decided to stop by today for lunch. It was packed, but we got seated right away. I have never been here during the day and it is still rather dim in there, at night it is rather dark. We ordered the Steak sandwich and Chicken jalapeno pasta. The steak was cooked exactly how I like it and I also ordered the side salad with their house made balsamic vinaigrette. Their balsamic vinaigrette is what started me on vinaigrettes and a good one is hard to find. The chicken jalapeno pasta was good, but the taste reminded me of vegetable cream cheese spread. It might just be me. We went during lunch, and they were busy, but it seemed like everything took a really long time. We were there for an hour and a half and ended up having them pack our dessert to go, as it was more than 10 minutes and we still hadn't received it.

Top-notch food. I had the blackened cod. It was delicious. My only complaint was that the portion size was a little small, but that's nitpicking. It's a little pricey, but the food is that good.

Liked it so much we went back the next day. Visiting from WA state and the had a really good experience. The restaurant is in an old house and is roomier than it looks and quite pleasant inside. The staff is amazing - really friendly and welcoming in a genuine way. I had a grilled salmon Caesar and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The next day we stopped on the way to the airport because we knew they serve quickly and it would keep us on schedule. Not disappointed great service and good food again.

Tried something new while in DSM after going to a VA appointment …Skips! Their clam chowder was the BEST ever…the right amount of clam to potato ratio, the thickness was perfect and the flavor of the spices were just right. No salt or pepper needed. Oh, and the classic martini was perfect. Thank you for the excellent service.

My girlfriend treated me to dinner at Skip's last night. I've always had good dining experiences here, but tonight was exceptional. We started with the jalapeno shrimp, which is absolutely amazing. It has just the right amount of kick, and the butter is perfectly zesty and garlicky. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but, with the warm, crispy bread that accompanies the salads and the garlic toast pictured with the shrimp, we cleaned the entire plate. Now, onto the entrees. My girlfriend went with her go-to, the cavatelli, which never disappoints. Baked to perfection with a generous amount of bubbly cheese, heaping with Italian sausage, and served with garlic toast, it's one of the can't miss dishes on the menu. I opted for the bone-in pork shank with mushroom demi glace, which is essentially osso bucco. It was my first time ordering this dish, but I can confidently say that it won't be my last. The pork was cooked perfectly; fall-off-the-bone-tender and succulent, yet caramelized and crispy on the exterior. The sauce was a deliciously savory complement to the flawlessly braised shank, and mixed well with the well-cooked rice pilaf that the meat was served over. As satisfied as we were with our food, it would be wrong of me not to mention how great the service was. We were greeted warmly, seated promptly, and our server was attentive; filling our glasses before they were empty and making sure that each dish was to our liking. If you've not had a chance to try this Southside gem, I would recommend that you make a visit, and treat yourself to an awesome dining experience.

The best steak I've had in my entire life and trust me, I've eaten ALOT of steak! Cooked to a perfect medium rare for me and well done ( yes I know that's a crime ) for my husband. Amazing atmosphere, fabulous service from Jasmine and DELICIOUS food. Rather pricey but honestly worth it. Highly reccomend!

Back for the second night in a town full of restaurants. The walleye was perfect yesterday. Having the calamari and chicken marsala tonight. Looking forward to the au gratin potatoes. Calamari is served as steaks not rings. Tender and flavorful. Sorry the plate was half gone as of the photo.

We took my son out to a celebratory dinner for his college graduation. All of the staff were attentive and our food and drinks were awesome. It was a great meal and the staff made it memorable. Everyone loved their dinners and we all left full and happy.

Great service, wonderful and a nice atmosphere. Went for dinner, had a ribeye steak with sautéed mushrooms and onions. Also had wonderful garlic mashed potatoes. It was one of the most amazing ribeye steaks I’ve had that just melts in your mouth and with wonderful flavor. Highly recommend it!!!!

Terrific food, prime rib melts in your mouth. Staff is amazing, prices are a little higher than average but the food is worth it. My wife and I both got prime rib and drinks and it was about $80. The only downfall is that it was a bit too crowded. We'll go back again.

I have lived in Iowa for 55 years and this was my first visit to Skips and we will definitely be back. Our server was very professional and I wish I could remember her name. The beer was served ice cold and both the appetizer and meals where served hot and tasted fantastic... Great Job !!!!

IMO, the Best Burger in the state is served here! My burger was done to perfection from fresh ground beef, garnished with fresh tomatoes and onions, and topped with peppy jack cheese. Served with a side order of black beans. A great meal 😋. The servers were awesome 👍 too!!

As usual, the food and service were top notch. That's why there was an hour wait at 5 pm. But at 6:15 we still didn't have a table. I get it. It's small, dark and crowded. That's part of the charm. But you really need an actual host or hostess. The young man serving in that role tonight needs to up his customer service game and smile once in a while. He was rude and angry. Not a good start to our evening!

Fri 6/24/22 Server Annette. She never checked on us. When large tables, that ordered long after us, was getting their food & she just says "Well they're busy back there". Too busy to fix 2 plates on time, instead of a large table of people, first. Wouldn't make eye contact with us. Had to flag her down just to get our bill. Next time, we'll request anyone else.

Impressed by both the food and service of this excellent restaurant! A bit more expensive than other places we've stopped at during our two week exploration of the northern mid-west, but the best meal we've had since getting on the road. Opened with onion rings. A small provides enough for 4 easily. Salads were excellent. Steaks were some of the best tasting, most tender I've ever eaten. A must stop if you're ever in Des Moines.

Skip's was amazing. Everything is made in house, top notch ingredients. I never get a take home box but I did a Skip's. I ordered a bourbon & water and it wasn't watered down like a lot of bars & restaurants. It isn't inexpensive but we'll worth the $ value. We will definitely be going back.

Skip’s has proven time & time again that they have theee best pasta in the metro. Everything they serve has the best flavor. The cozy ambience & awesome service makes for the perfect date night. I don’t think there’s a thing on their menu that’ll disappoint you, all the way down to the drinks. This south side staple is a must!

I had been here once before but I don't recall what I had ordered. I had gotten the jalapeño chicken this time around. Very creamy, not too spicy. I could've done with more spice but the lower spice could cater to others who don't like it as much. Our server did a great job as well. I believe Patrick was his name.

Tuesday is the new Friday at Skip's. We went at 6 pm in the pouring rain and it was quite busy, not that we minded a short wait for great food. All entrees were perfectly cooked and delish. Drinks were on point although I would appreciate a bigger cocktail menu. Minor kvetching... highly recommend Skip's.

Seriously one of the best restaurants in the city. A south side gem for decades. Everything on the menu is delicious and consistent with quality and fresh ingredients. The Burger is outstanding, Chili is my favorite along side Drake Diner. Love this place!!

My husband and I came here for the first time and were so impressed! The service was great, the wine was delicious and the food was outstanding. My husband said the Calamari was the best he's ever had. He ordered the Prime Rib with Au Gratin potatoes and I ordered the Steak De Burgo. WOW! Definitely recommend the Steak De Burgo and get the Au Gratin potatoes to go with. We've already claimed this to be our go to date night spot! 10/10

Skips always has exceptional service and incredible food. One of the best places to eat in Des Moines. We go often and the wait staff remembers our order and always come to say hello to our baby daughter. I 100% recommended going to skips. I promise you that you won’t be disappointed!

They have a straight forward menu. The service and wait staff are very friendly and helpful. They were able to accommodate our family of 5 which made the experience pleasant and comfortable. The location was convenient to the airport. We grabbed a bite after our flight.

One of my favorite restaurants in the Des Moines area. I tend to eat here at least once a month if not more since it's within 5mins of work for me. The blackened chicken pasta is my all time favorite and is easily one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. Not only is the food top notch but the atmosphere for dine-in is very welcoming and enjoyable. The staff have what's gone above and beyond and are very respectful to all customers. Recommend enthusiastically.

My friend & I went to Skip's on a Monday afternoon around 2pm. It had a fair amount of patrons at the bar eating. Our food server Alex not only took our order but was bartending as well! She wasn't stressed at all. Very good at multi tasking. My jalepeno chicken linguine was excellent as well as the smoked chicken nachos I shared with my friend as an appetizer. It's very homey and looks like a little cottage from the outside. Definitely recommend!

What a lovely dining experience! Our server was amazing. We had the Ahi salad as an appetizer. I had the salmon special and my husband had the pork shank. Wow. The attention to detail in the presentation and atmosphere was painstaking. Definitely worth negotiating the area construction!

Amazing. Simply amazing. First time there and first impression: Atmosphere 5 stars. Food (ordered the chicken de burgo it was marvelous, exquisite. I was on cloud 9, it came with a side I opted for garlic bread out of any array of choices, I was not disappointed). Ordered the pear Moscow mule and it complimented our appetizer, spinach art dip, very well. The dip was flavorful almost spicy, but very good and the pear mule made the spiciness very enjoyable. For dessert we had the snickertini cocktail! haha this whole experience was 5 for me. Would definitely recommend.

Fantastic food and all around solid restaurant! Server was very friendly, attentive, and helpful with the menu. My friend really enjoyed their pasta dish, and my carbonara was absolutely amazing. Portions were large and worth every penny. Good drinks and great beer selection with a lot of local options. Was a little dark and loud, but was a packed and friendly group of patrons, and nothing worth loosing a star over.

This was delightful for lunch and the dinner menu looked equally as good. The sandwiches are very good and quite large. It's the usual fare Burgers, Italian Beef etc. It was our first time there and were seated in a step down area which was quite nice and the service was excellent. The regulars sat in the bar or back dining area, which seemed to be business lunches or friends. You cant go wrong no matter where you sit or what you eat.

Got there early, dined alone in a small booth. By the time I left within 75 minutes, it was filling up quickly. The filet was perfect, libations were excellent and service was timely and pleasant. What else is there?

Ok, we have been going to Skip's for over 30 years. We have never lived in Des Moines. We adjust our schedule so we can have a meal at Skip's when passing through. Skip's just stays the same or maybe even gets better. They do not take reservations but the wait is always worth it. Food, drinks and service are exceptional.

It's nice to walk in and be greeted and welcomed immediately! My favorite lunch item is the delicious Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad - great, fresh ingredients! I go often over my lunch hour and, although it is always busy, they get us out on time! I've never been there for dinner, but the lunch lighting is low, so I'm sure the ambiance is great for a date night! It appears to be an old house, but they have made very efficient use of space!

When we first arrived they were busy and we were told it would be a 30-45 min wait... We were seated in less than 20. We ordered bruschetta for an appetizer and the North Atlantic cod, and shrimp pasta for dinner. All of which was absolutely amazing. Even the broccoli in the pasta was perfect!! The table in which they seated us was in the back corner, but even it was absolutely clean and perfectly stocked. I spent only $85 on dinner which included a $15 tip. Without a doubt 5 star service at an affordable price. Exceeded our expectations. Definitely coming back!!

Amazing place. Can't believe I've lived here for almost 10 years and never visited. Food was superb. I had blue steak special with garlic mashed and wife had pecan crusted chicken salad. Both were made to perfection. Big portion sizes friendly staff and local brews on tap. Dark wood all around with low lighting, so if your dark vision isn't up to par you might have a hard time here. For my wife and I it's one of the best places all around we have eaten.

I really wanted to love this place based on the pictures of the food. This was my first dining experience here and first I must say the service was pretty good. I tipped 30%. The entrees smelled delicious but when it came to taste the food was underwhelming. The atmosphere was that of fine dining and while not super expensive I do not feel that based on taste it was worth the money. I will say that the bruchetta was the best I had ever had. I'm glad I went but should I ever come back it will only be for the bruchetta.

Went to Skip's last night. There were a series of small issues, took longer to be seated then told, additional time sitting at the table and a glass of wine broken on the table by a waitress. I gave them 5 stars due to how they reacted to these issues. The host tried hard to get us a sat at a table, the wait staff were also doing a good job at both the bar and the tables. After the long delay in finally getting our food and we finally spoke to the manager he acknowledged the multiple issues and made it right for us. Although that experience was not 5 stars last night, how it was handled was 5 star. We will go again. The food and staff were very good. I recommend giving them a shot.

This was a wonderful old-fashioned steak house. This was the kind that had the creamy garlic mashed potatoes, the red, backlit bar, and the dim light. These places are always the best. Favorites: Spin Dip - Best in City forsure Calamari - Incredible, unlike anywhere else. Sauce with it is amazing Salad with raspberry vinaigrette. I always get a double portion it’s so tasty. I went to pick up a friend from the airport and we usually stop for a bite. We have stopped on a few occasions and the food is always okay. Nothing special but nothing bad. Definitely can tell it is an open a can and grab out of the freezer kind of place ( for lunch anyway ). The outside is homey and the inside is dark. This place is awesome. 1) The batter on the onion rings is phenomenal. I didn't much care of the stringy onion. I like an onion ring that is big enough to dip without breaking apart. 2) The New England Clam Chowder is divine. We were kinda surprised when we got there. The resturaunt looks like an old house. The inside is not that big, but large enough to accommodate multiple larger parties. The lighting was low, which I thought ok. Since it is smaller inside, it was very loud with all the customers talking. The waitress was nice, but took a long time for the food to be brought out. The food was ok, but a little over priced. I think they cater more towards the older generation, which I respect, as that was the majority of the customers when we were there.

This is the first place I've been in weeks that cooked my steak perfectly. In fact, everything was done exquisitely; the asparagus was delicious, well balanced vinaigrette on a great salad. Service throughout was attentive without being intrusive. Cap all that with great bar conversation & a pleasingly moderate tab. I look forward to returning soon for one of the tasty sounding pasta dishes!
