First, I must clear this up, this is not a coffee place. They do serve a good cup of Joe, but this is a restaurant. I'm always wary of greasy spoons, but this one is awesome. I liked the tech they're using in there. They have pagers for the wait line, handheld ordering systems. Really throws you off from the purple booths, purple cups and wainscoting. Greta caught me rearranging my jalapenos in my "kick it up" Omelette. She hurried over to me to check and make sure everything was okay. Everything was splendid. She did a great job. The food was great, I love to see the rings of Truth on a pancake that has been pan-fried.

They added corned beef hash to the menu! As demonstrated by my half-consumed portion pictured below - it's sooo good! Personally, I don't need the sausage gravy (but I bet lots of people will love it), I'll just know for next time. ❤

I stopped at PerKup after seeing high ratings on my cross country trip. I went with the Chicken Parm omelet and a side chocolate chip pancake. The pancake was amazing and came with plenty of butter and syrup. The omelet was large but was average in taste. Something didn't mix well. My server was attentive but didn't tell me that my side of sauce was an extra fifty cents. I wouldn't mind, but the sauce wasn't that good and the waitress suggested it. So, great quick service. Would visit again and try a different sandwich or just a large stack of pancakes.

Don't forget about this lovely restaurant nestled in Urbandale! Open 6 days a week for breakfast and lunch. Closed on Mondays. On this visit they only had one table left which I snagged. My server Ann was a rock star. Quick, nice, knowledgeable, and everything I like in a server. I chose the Mama Mia omelet with hashbrowns and French toast. I could go on for days about how good they all were. Fresh, tasty, filling, pleasing to the eye, smelled wonderful, and FAST! I think it was less than 10 minutes from the time I ordered until I received my food. Ann checked in a couple of times, brought me separate to go boxes so my omelet and French toast wouldn't cross contaminate. LOL. I ate every bite of the hashbrowns that were PERFECTLY crisp. Total was $15. I will get 2 full meals from it. Restaurant and bathroom clean. I have been here maybe 7 times? Every time had something different, and every time it has been great. Breakfast is served all day, and you can start ordering lunch at 10:30am.

Wether its breakfast or lunch the service is quick, relaxed and accommodating. The coffee isn't starbucks, but that's why I love coming here. Its generally an older crowd when you go in, but it just adds to the experience. The burgers are great and i love their clam chowder. I went with my mom and had the corned beef skillet. I would have preferred it with the hollandaise sauce.... but the nice crisp sautéed veggies, the corned beef. I had a flavored Americano.... oh gosh! This stuff is just too good!

This unassuming restaurant serves the most amazing breakfast I have had in a very long time. As you can see they have a very extensive menu with lots of great dishes. I asked the waitress what they are known for or what she recommends. She quickly pointed us to the biscuits and gravy and french toast. Everything we ordered was hot and delicious and seasoned perfectly. I do want to call out that they have the best hash browns I have ever had! They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just amazing. We are planning another trip back again soon but this time we want to try their lunch options.

We stopped here for a fun breakfast on our way exploring around town. The food was delicious. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the buttermilk biscuit was a delightful treat. There are lots of coffee options and plenty of tasty baked goods. The real winners of the meal were the homemade pineapple jam which was divine! Be sure to get some of this stuff or you are missing out. The revenge sauce on the croissant sandwich was also absolutely delectable with a hint of spicy and a ton of creaminess. The service was very attentive and friendly. If we are back in this area we will definitely visit again.

Excellent pancakes, buttery and delicious! Service is always quick and polite, the pricing is very affordable. My only bad thing is that it’s a smaller place so harder to bring groups but that’s part of what makes this place a charming hole in the wall! I’ve been twice this weekend and will be returning soon!

This was our first time visiting Iowa. We Googled places to eat for breakfast and chose this place from several other options. This place was wonderful. It's definitely a hidden jewel.The food was good and the service was flawless. Our waitress was Caressa M. and she was very kind, patient, smiled, and checked in often to see if we needed anything. We highly recommend this place and wish we had a percup cafe in our state. Thanks Caressa for making our day start off great!🙂

This is one of my favorite places to get breakfast in town. From their amazing coffee selection to their food. Great biscuits and gravy and crispy hash browns. They make a great latte and cafe mocha. Also they have the best French toast in town. Either the blueberry or apple you can’t go wrong.

We visited PerKup Cafe on a Saturday morning around 8:30. It was fairly busy but not out of hand. There was a wait when we left around 9:15. A little girl sat us which was really cool and shows the true meaning of a family owned restaurant. The food was awesome, with highlights being the revenge sauce and apple cinnamon French toast. They had a very intriguing hash brown taco as well. They also have a full coffee bar to serve lattes and specialty drinks which was a great change of pace. We had never been before today, but will definitely be returning!

Sorry for the unglamorous food pic, but that’s when I realized that this may be the perfect omelette. Egg / filling ratio consistent from first bite to last and perfectly proportioned. The hash browns were crunchy, not greasy, and the onions were cooked but still had texture.

Cozy breakfast spot with delicious breakfast and lunch. Sunday mornings are busy, but the wait was not long and the service was prompt. Restaurant accommodates a variety of group sizes, and offers booster seats and high chairs for children. The food was fantastic - especially the french toast. Nothing terribly fancy, just good food and a nice atmosphere. The menu has something for everyone with several ala carte options that are sure to please anyone. Menu is appropriately priced, and the bottomless coffee always hits the spot. Service was prompt and friendly, reflective of the family-run business. Great place to start the day.

Food is great & tasty! However, we won't be able to come back. Today was the first day with their new menu and price increases. And although I understand price increases in this economy; they have taken it to another level. $1.75 for a slice of cheese and an additional $2.00 for sour dough bread without it being on the menu. It's truly unfortunate. If you're going to nickel and dime your customers, you should Atleast be upfront about it& put it on the menu.

Nice atmosphere, comfortable booth seating, and friendly attentive staff. The food is really great, as is the coffee! I would rate this place 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 but they have one huge problem. They need to install water filters and filter their ice machine as well. Their water tastes horrible, like it came from a corroded old soda machine.

Solid! My girl and myself are on a journey to eat at every breakfast place in Des Moines. We wanted to go to a new place but too long of a wait. We usually get basic Breakfast. 2 eggs over easy, hashbrowns, meat, and toast. If you can't do that. I don't want to eat fro. The rest of your menu. She had the basic and love it. I had the Marshall. The blueberry French tost is crispy and delicious. Eggs cooked perfectly. Only criticism is that the hashbrowns could of been thicker and the Marshall came with bacon that I could hold up like a diving board. Our cappuccino and mocha were amazing. Served in large cups. Loved it. I consider this a place that we go to when we go some where and have a wait. We know less waiting and quality breakfast.

TLDR: I enjoy trying new places and maybe this wasn't the best showing they had to offer. Food was cooked and edible just not quite there yet as for flavor and texture. Service was fine, great even, considering it was during an obvious rush time. I might visit Perkup again to see if they improve and get the flavors to come together. As of right now I have no immediate plans to return anytime soon. My party had the following. Biscuits and gravy Eggs Benedict Kids french toast and bacon Ultimately service was great, atmosphere was fine if not a bit strange (could tell it is strip mall but made into a diner. Not being held against them just was unexpected), pricing was normalish and food was edible. It came down to the food just missing the mark on every piece. Eggs Bennie had some of the best poached eggs I've ever had, the ham was super thick, on a wheat English muffin and (I'm not joking) drowning in hollandaise sauce like, muffin is just soggy sponge boat for the ham and egg. In the end eating it in bites as intended you could only taste ham. Just missing the mark of the things being balanced proportionally. Biscuits and gravy missed it with flavor and consistency, the gravy being too runny and not enough of... anything it wasn't salty it wasn't peppery it wasn't meat it was mostly cream/milky which made us sad. Maybe it was slightly intended on the spice level since we had salt and pepper so you could do it how you wanted but, it definitely just needed more time on the burner or flour to thicken up. Kids french toast and bacon. Bacon was obviously fine. Bacon only has 3 options of either cooked, burnt, or trichinosis. The french toast was a single slice of bread cut into 4 strips and personally I felt it again lacked spice/flavor. It needed more cinnamon, salt, sugar, anything really. It tasted less of a Custard/egg wash and more of milk than anything just like the gravy.

Our group of 4 were seated after a short wait. Drinks were ordered and received quickly. Waitress was pleasant but did seem to have issues entering our order into her handheld computer and we received our breakfast appetizer before the meals even though we told her twice we wanted it out at same time as everything else. Food was very good and filling. Very large omelets, hashbrowns crisp like I like them and those who had french toast said it was excellent. Would definitely go back.

The Kick it Up Omelette was quite delicious. They use fresh sliced Jalapeños which was a surprise that added some serious spice. The revenge sauce is a nice balance of Chipotle creme inside the omelette that mellows the heat of the fresh sliced Jalapeños and adds a nice smokey flavor. I'd order it again, nice spot we've frequented multiple time now when we've been to Des Moines. A+ Breakfast Spot!!

The service is very good, the restaurant is clean and has a nice atmosphere. I had the loaded omelet, which consists of sausage, mushrooms, onions and peppers. What it lacked in flavor it made up for in volume. I had two seasoned with salt and pepper at the table, which I am not a big fan of. This was just my first time at this Cafe, so I will have to go back and give it a try for lunch.

The food was excellent! Service was great! My only negatives were that we weren’t offered more coffee when our cups were pretty empty and there was little to no social distancing. My chief complaint is that what appeared to be the owner was sans mask most of the time. That was disappointing when the sign on the door says that there is a mask mandate issued by the Governor of Iowa....

If you live in des moines and have not been here yet, and you enjoy breakfast and large coffee menus, the only question to ask you is; Why haven't you been here yet??? Amazing food, amazing food selection, and staff are the friendliest around. No joke, these people are helpful and attentive. The food is straight up home cooking and legit diner/breakfast food. My wife enjoyed the large selection of coffee options. The breakfast appetizer is a must, you'll thank me.

The food was good but the table hostess kept coming by our table after and picking up anything she could before finally telling my friend she'd get her a to go cup because people were waiting. Basically kicking us out. No one was waiting and there was another empty booth nearby. I'll never go back

The wait was a whopping ten minutes at lunch rush for a seating of 5. Our orders varied greatly. When we got one order slightly over done they immediately fixed it. The food was homemade and fantastic. The biscuits and gravy was phenomenal and the gravy was from scratch. Will be returning

Excellent breakfast! I had the Jake (-onions & peppers) with bacon, it was delicious. I also enjoyed the strawberry/pineapple homemade jam on sourdough toast. My cousin enjoyed the Grilled Ham & Cheese on sourdough with a cup of the amazing cheeseburger soup. Caressa is an awesome server plentiful refills of our delicious iced tea. I really enjoy their hash brown taco dish! 😍 It’s made to order so won’t be coming back out with the drinks, lol but that is OKAY! Totally worth the lil wait! Perkup is one of my favorite places to eat around Des Moines. Love the management and staff, the food is absolutely amazing - especially the blueberry french toast - and the service is great. The chicken parmesan omelette is one of the most unique and delicious breakfast dishes I've had - and I'm a breakfast enthusiast. While employees are masked, they do not impose their mask preferences on customers and allow people to make their own choices, which is really important to our family. We are frequent patrons of Perkup and would encourage anyone looking for an amazing dining experience to give them a shot!

I got the apple cinnamon french toast with ham and it was great!! They get their bread locally from Big Sky Bread Company which just takes it to the next level of tasty. Our server, Haley, was sweet and very attentive to our table. My coffee cup was always full and she checked in on us often. Overall, enjoyed my experience, and I'm sure we'll be back!

What a wonderful hidden gem. Well it’s not hidden, those in the know are there all the time. It’s always hoppin when we’re in there. The food is fantastic and homemade. No thin, limp commercial quality bacon. Great juicy pieces. The pancakes are giant and fluffy. Omelets are fantastic.

The people here are extremely friendly, and we were seated quickly. The food has a slightly different taste, as you'd expect from more of a mom and pop shop. Everything down to the chai was created uniquely to an extent. From the time we were seated until the time we were able to leave (having ordered right away) it took us about an hour. So be prepared for a longer breakfast.

Visiting Des Moines from Kansas City and found this restaurant on Yelp rated very highly. This place doesn't disappoint. Service was friendly. Food was great and they made the best mocha I've ever had. The french toast was as good as everyone said. Although, the french toast is so unique it's hard to compare it to other french toast. A great alternative to chain breakfast joints. Get some hashbrowns - they're so good. And the coffee and other food items are above average. It's almost always busy, so there may be a short wait for a table, and the servers are always super busy, so don't go if you're in a big hurry. Staff is very friendly, and they do a great job of keeping drink full. Bringing kids? Note they don't serve fried foods (no chicken nuggets or fries).

Wife and I came out to try this spot for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It's unsuspecting as it resides in a small plaza. Wife ordered the Mama Mia omelet, had bacon, spinach, mushrooms, Italian cheese blend and their "revenge sauce". The revenge sauce is labeled as spicy but if you're a fan of spicy then this sauce won't be spicy to you. The best thing I can compare the spice to is a chipotle type of sauce, nice flavorful kick but not much in the way of being spicy. I got the half order of biscuits and gravy with eggs and hash with 2 pieces of bacon. All this to say that we'll be coming again. Omelet was tasty and unique, and my B&G were solid. Awesome little find!

One of the best places for breakfast in Des Moines. Everything is cooked to order, service is great, and a very clean restaurant. Many people are aware of this so it can get very busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Get there early to avoid a wait but tables turn over fairly quickly so you never have too long of a wait.

Great fast service, excellent food and beverage (hot chocolate) and leftovers until I got home and shared my bread pudding with a side of nuts and sauce. As my friend shared in devouring the bread pudding which her father used to fix all the time she said it was the best and she could tell that fresh eggs were used to make it. The foid is always fresh and hot and i highly recomend the apple cinnamon french toast, so good it doesn't need syrup!! Also try their homemade jellies and jams. This is a locally owned place. A must go to place if you are visiting the area.

Tiny glass of warm milk - $2. Hostess had a line at the register so I had to stand in the hall waiting to have someone seat me. Hash browns were not very crispy and too much oil. Wasn't crowded but food took some time to arrive and the plates cooled down before I could finish... big draft from the front door from people coming and going. Suggest you avoid the tables in the center of the room and ask for a booth on an inside wall as long as the weather is cold. Service was okay but couldn't catch the attention of the waitress because talking to the hostess and other waitress.

This was our first trip to perk up cafe. I really wanted to try the coffee. I really liked the triple shot white chocolate mocha. It was the best part of the meal. I decided to try the biscuits and gravy. It came with eggs and hashbrowns. My wife ordered an omelet and added some pancakes. The biscuits and gravy were ok but they were missing the good old fashioned peppered gravy taste I'm use to. The biscuits were kind of hard but had good flavor. The eggs were cooked perfect and the hash browns were good. My wife enjoyed her omelet she said it was a bit under seasoned. It was a nice little place that felt more like a small town dinner then a place you would find in West des moines. I might go back and give it another try. It was all about what I would say was a lack of seasoning might be the only thing holding me back.

Staff: Our waitress was slow getting to us and did not top our drinks or desserts as shown in other pictures, or the menu pictures. Half way through our meal she sat down to roll silverware and ignored us until we hailed the manager for our check. The host was very friendly and did most of the work on our table. Food: Order half syrup on the mocha unless you want the bottom inch of your drink to be unmixed syrup. Omlette ingredients are not cooked into eggs, instead they are scooped into your egg patty (think taco). Vegetables in omlette were very undercooked. Eggs were somewhat dry. I can't verify but it tasted as if the eggs had been precooked. The rest of the food was not at all bad and largely tasted like standard faire. Price: Specialty coffee drinks $3-4 each Breakfasts $6-12 Desserts $3-5 Cost for 2 with drinks meals and dessert was $32 Conclusion: Decent place to eat, and certainly better than chain breakfasts, but there are better eats to be had around Des Moines.
