Delicious food, very friendly and prompt service. Cozy bar ambiance. The meatloaf we had was one of the best I have ever had. Drinks were ok, could be stronger.. But that's a personal preference. Will definitely go back regularly.

Delicious dinner in a quaint restaurant. I followed the advice of other reviewers and booked a reservation ahead of time. I highly recommend doing this because the restaurant is not very big. We had the steak deburgo (a local specialty) and the short ribs. They both tasted amazing! I also recommend going across the street to the Winchester Public House after dinner for some delicious cocktails. 🍸

Has a touch of old school vibe but without the stuffiness, and with a touch of modern casual. 90s-2000s alternative rock was playing in what otherwise might feel like an old very small steakhouse pub. DEFINITELY get the daily egg roll special - these aren’t Chinese egg rolls but random, fun, flavors. For example this week had shrimp and grits egg rolls during Mardi Gras timing. The short rib specialty dinner was delicious, melt in your mouth. Cocktails were all solid. Server was very nice although not the most attentive during our visit. The bread pudding was very good - I have had better but this one was up there.

Came during a busier lunch hour- our service was very courteous and I could tell my waiter was working hard to make sure all of the tables he was responsible for were satisfied. My friend and I shared a wonderful appetizer - the egg rolls du jour were a honey/siracha chicken combo. They could have had a little more sauce, but were overall amazing! Our lunch portions were just right - my friend had the meatloaf that she really loved, and I had the 1/2 sandwich of the day (roast beef and provolone with some kind of delicious sauce) and a house salad. The salad was full and green and had a lot of fresh produce. They also have quality ranch 😂. Overall we were in and out in a little over an hour and it was very filling and delicious at a really good price for the quality of food and service we received! I will be back! Pictured are: honey/siracha chicken egg rolls du jour, and the half roast beef sandwich portion with house salad/ranch!

Loved the anniversary dinner. Scallops were amazing, sauce tremendous with jalapeno kick. Steak melting and lobster mash great. Had cheese and broccoli soup before and it was too die for. Place, very small, much smaller than I was thinking. Smaller than Simon's.

They had a chef's special of loaded fries with carne asada. It was one of the best appetizers I have eaten in my life. My husband's junction burger has inspired me to get it the next time we come to Des Moines. This place is amazing. We will be back every time we are in the area.

Really lovely experience! Our first time experience & the welcoming staff accommodations and kitchen talent made the night start to finish unforgettable! I had never had short ribs before/ they fell from the bones! Amazing! The egg rolls - really showcase this beautiful restaurants passion because (I believe) they change em up on a regular basis and ours were outstanding! Loved Coopers. Normally, small dives have a dive like menu. Not Cooper’s — here is a menu that can compete with fine diner taste against the West Des Moines best. The atmosphere is charmingly refreshing. The menu caters to the top best meat and sea food selections. The Beef Short Ribs were off the bone tender and flavorful— more than enough to eat in with some to take home as a night cap treat!

Excellent service, food and atmosphere! I dined alone right befor the busy lunch rush, and never felt in the way, they were just as happy to have me as a full table. Had the turkey sandwich of the day & cup of soup. Every bit was fabulous and so reasonably priced! Can't wait to go back! Thanks for making me feel welcome!

It's a nice little place in valley junction. It's clean inside though it was noisy when we went but I think that's more because of a louder table they had. I don't know if it would be great for large events considering it is on the smaller side but it's a great place for a nice dinner with a few friends or family. The soup of the day was mushroom and we both got some. It was delicious and comforting without being too filling. It tasted clean and the mushrooms tasted fresh. I got the steakhouse burger with wedge fries as my main and dug right in. It was a bigger burger and every bite seemed better than the last. My wife got the egg rolls which at the time were Reubens I believe. She said they were perfect and were exactly what a Reuben should taste like. We finish out with a slice of cake each. She decided on the lava cake and said it was fluffy and tasted like a fresh brownie. I got the Italian lemon which was great and wasn't too lemony. Over all we spent 70 after tip but had an amazing time. We will be back in and I'd highly recommend this place to anyone.

Excellent Raspberry mules, food was decent. I ordered the Mushroom swiss with a side of fries and a raspberry mule. Sat at the bar. The bar tender seemed to be more interested in his conversation with the kitchen then focusing on the really busy bar. Only real bad thing about this was the staff, had to wave them down any time I needed something. The waitress was super sweet even though I was sitting at the bar and kept reminding the bar tender he had customers.

They have a daily egg roll with a sandwich flavor. We had a Monte Cristo egg roll. It was served with blackberry jam…yum!!!! We were there for lunch. They had a big selection of sandwiches and there was an option to get a combination of half sandwich, soup, egg roll, etc. this way you can try more than one thing!!!

The food is always great here. I wish it was bigger so that it didn't get cramped as quickly as it often does. Increased size would also help it to not get chilly if the door is opened too often in the winter.

We stopped here for dinner based on a recommendation that my wife read and really enjoyed the service and atmosphere. I don't usually order meatloaf, but asked about it here since it was marked as one of the spicier dishes. Our server highly recommended it - Cooper's way (open-faced, topped with cole slaw), with the loaded baked potato salad side. Boy am I glad I followed his recommendation...they were all delicious and I would highly recommend them. The meat loaf was very moist, tender and tasty, with just the right amount of peppery glaze to give it a kick. White cheddar and American cheese slices were melted over the top - all of which was topped with a very tasty cole slaw. And then there was that loaded baked potato salad that was unique, tasty and just the right portion size. Think of a loaded baked potato squished into a small bowl with some relatively raw onions mixed in for taste and crunch - loved it! My wife also liked it much better than her burger and helped me eat it. Her burger was average, cooked beyond the medium rare that was ordered and a little dry...I would take the meat loaf before it any day. Although we just slipped in for a drink, it was an ideal spot for a first date. Quiet and relaxed atmosphere with a very gracious and attentive staff. Even the water glass was continuously filled. The placed filled up quickly with patrons for the dinner rush so I would recommend reservations. I think everyone will enjoy the environment for a romantic dinner or a dinner with family.

We went to Cooper's several years ago and ate on their patio. I don't remember what we had but we made our way back for another meal. Wow! My wife had the DeBurgo Chicken Pasta and I had the DeBurgo Chicken, the same dish sansrr the pasta. But I got ahead of myself. The salad that came with the meal was amazing! Freshly made with homemade croutons that resembled mini loaves of bread. So delicious! We both had the creamy parmesan garlic dressing and it perfectly complimented the greens without being overpowering. Both of our entrees were perfect. Tender chicken with a flavourful sauce and a side of white cheddar mashed potatoes. I can see why this place is popular. Reservations are a must after 5 pm.

Cocktails were delicious. Egg rolls amazing. Steak DeBurgo and Curried Shepherds pie just about perfect. Bread Pudding for dessert. A wonderfully relaxing evening. Worth a visit definitely.

Ate lunch, had a side salad and a diet pop. Nothing special but adequate. A bit pricey for the salad. Fine atmosphere but smaller than I expected. You have to walk through part of the kitchen to get to the restrooms, a by-product of the small location.

Unfortunately, this was quite underwhelming. With their prices and atmosphere, I would have expected much better. We ordered 3 different chicken sandwiches. The chicken was firm and tough, the coleslaw could have come from HyVee deli and we got there soon after they opened, so that chicken should have been freshly cooked. It's like they are hyping themselves with interesting ingredients, but don't really have a chef that knows how to put the flavors together for a real experience. Won't be back.

I am never disappointed when I eat at Coopers. Lunch or dinner, the food is wonderful and service perfect. As much as I love Des Moines, I always feel I’m someplace other than Iowa when I’m at Coopers. It’s a warm, comfy place to have a great meal anytime of the day. I like that it’s a smaller venue. Can’t go wrong at Coopers!

I used to suffer from severe depression and a clubbed foot until i tried their steak deburgo and i tell you i saw God in that creamy sauce. The owner is a pillar of the community and has the best beard in valley junction. You wont be disappointed.

Was excited to go here, been here a few times but had been awhile. They have egg roll of the day and it was taco when we were there and they were awesome. Unfortunately the rest of the food not so. The burger was overdone - well past medium ordered and the toppings were lost in comparison to the size of the burger, fries hot and OK, coleslaw bland, chicken sandwich ok but nothing special. Service was very good. Sad to say was just not what I had hoped for overall.

First timers at Coopers! Everything was absolutely awesome. Little hole in the wall place with a chill atmosphere and great food and service. Our waiter was Spencer and he did a fantastic job. We all tried the egg rolls and pulled pork nachos and you can really tell a difference with the homemade tortilla chips. I got the open face Cajun meatloaf and sandwich and it was very good. Slightest of kick, but the coleslaw is perfect with you. Overall fantastic experience and we hope to come back in the future!

Cooper's is EXCELLENT! The interior atmosphere really sets this place apart. It's cozy and warm. Then there's the food. If you like trying different things, they have their eggrolls, soups, and sandwiches of the day, and dinner entrees of the day as well. I work in the area, so I often pick up lunch to go. I've enjoyed most of the sandwiches and burgers. The lunch Pick 2 or Pick 3 is a great lunch option. My favorite lunch is the Ham & Swiss melt with house salad. You can't go wrong with Cooper's. Service is great, food is great.

Definitely has gone downhill. It used to be the best burger in town, but they're using frozen patties now and it doesn't stand out. I had the Steakburger, and it was drowned in A1 sauce so badly I couldn't put it down on my plate or else it would be soaked in the sauce that dripped. I made the mistake of getting a house salad as my side, and they put it on the same plate as my burger instead of its own plate/bowl. The creamy garlic parmesan dressing was quite thick and didn't go well with the salas. Mahi Mahi egg rolls were good, the Crab Artichoke dip tasted like mayonnaise. My wife's DeBurger lacked DeBurgo ingredients (which were tasty, just used sparingly), so it tasted like frozen burger. Really hope they move to change things up & get back to greatness! Time to allow online reservations, too. Its 2022.

The atmosphere, food and staff were all a part of creating a wonderful evening. I had a pear martini, chicken BBQ egg rolls, and the rib eye. Everything tasted great. The staff was very welcoming, friendly and professional. They didn't rush our group even though we were the last people left. Definitely a restaurant I'll revisit.

Love this restaurant! Great food, great drinks, and a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Perfect spot for a date night! The service was spectacular too! Not too expensive; I'd say the prices are mid-range for the entree selection. Definitely justified for the amount and quality of the food served. Not many tables, so be sure to call ahead if you plan on going during their busy hours!

The food I had was very good. The daily special egg roll was delicious. Philly beef egg roll. I also had the flat bread special. A nicely sweet apple, sausage, onion, sweet peppers and an excellent tomato sauce. My wife and step-mother both had the Made-right on Texas toast. Apparently it was very tasty as there was little left over. I very much enjoyed the coffee! The young lady who served us was very pleasant and attentive. By the time we left shortly after 12 the tables were nearly filled so reservations are probably a good idea.

Say hello to the chef on your way to the bathroom. It's the only way to get there, and part of the charm.

Cooper's is great. the staff is absolutely wonderful. sometimes I get a beer there. they have a pretty good selection. I've never eaten there. Idk if I ever will, but I don't come here for the food or drink. I have seen some of the burgers that come out of that kitchen and they look and smell amazing. maybe someday I will order one re-write this review. but once again I don't come here for the food. I come here for the people. the staff is so great. they are really real people, genuine in all their ways. In a world full of fakes and deceptions, does it really matter if I get awesome food? The friendship of these people is the sweetest thing of all. I work In valley junction and they let me sit down and drink water before my shift begins. these people are great neighbors. I am blessed to have known them in the small way I have.

Wonderful comfy place to come and eat some delicious food. We had the best fried zucchini you've ever eaten. Both our hamburgers were delicious and they were willing to cook them to order. I would especially recommend the bourbon Burger. Ended it all with a really yummy bread pudding. We will be back... Just make reservations cuz it will fill up quick.

Only thing I didn't enjoy was the water. It Tasted really bad. And it got very hot inside especially as we were eating. I walked back to use the restroom and it felt like it was boiling back there! The owner definitely needs to put some AC to work! When that changes I'll put five stars. I got the bourbon hamburger.. I loved it! And my boyfriend got the special. A stake that at first looked very small for $21. But it came with a delicious tomato soup and three sides. All very yummy. My French fies were absolutely delicious! Good selection of drinks. Service was very friendly and attentive. I want to come back but I don't like sweating when I eat.

Nice, cozy restaurant with good food at comparable prices. I went there with a very grumpy toddler for lunch. They brought us a coloring book, and water without hesitating. They also talked to him when he started to get rowdy. It would also be a good place to go without kids. The patio looks fun.

The menu is a little small for my liking because I am quite a picky eater and I don't feel their selection is large enough, however with that being said their daily special egg role is good. I also like going on Wednesdays as they have steak deburgo and that is really good. I am also always checking on their daily soup choice to see if it's one I would like. When it's a soup I want to try I haven't been disappointed. It's a small place and does have a patio in warmer weather. The staff is always friendly as well.

Great food! The chef will have weekly specials, and the entire menu is crafted to offer great plates. A little cramped among the rest of the Valley Junction strip, but it is a cozy and friendly wood-paneled eatery. Great for a little something different.

We had a wonderful meal and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. I am pretty sure they forgot to enter our orders, as it took almost an hour to get our food while everyone else seemed to be getting theirs much quicker. They were very apologetic and even comped our entrees which was not necessary but very appreciated . The Reuben soup was fantastic and we will certainly stop back if we travel through town again.

Holy Buckets, the service was amazing, the food was astronomical, the location was great; not very far off the interstate, the wait time was understandable because when I was there is was quite busy. Although, the Mtn Dew was flat, this restaurant was one of the best I've ever been to.

Melt in your mouth short ribs. Great atmosphere. It may be one of the last restaurants that isn't like sitting in a giant industrial tin can. I can actually speak with my dinner companions without yelling or reading lips. Love this place!

We are so glad we chose Cooper’ on 5th for our dinner date. My girlfriend and I don’t usually write reviews, but we just had to after tonight. Service was great; servers always checked up on us and made sure our waters were full. If you’re going to order an appetizer, go with the nachos for sure: some of the best nachos we’ve had in a while! For an entree, I got their ribeye and my gf got their chicken deburgo pasta, and both were absolutely amazing! Look no further and go to Coopers on 5th!

Fabulous tableside service. Meal was served in a decent amount of time. Drinks were ABSOLUTELY on par. And, I loved that they did not seat anyone right next to each other! Highly recommend when you are in the area!!!

Nice little restaurant in downtown Des Moines Iowa. I ordered the cajun meatloaf thought I would try something different. I will say the taste was flavorful ( if that's a word) the portions was huge nestled on mashed potatoes scrumptious! NOW the after effects were totally opposite I was on the toilet the next morning rocking back and forth....but definitely well worth it. I definitely recommend this place.

I was privileged to be a part of this team for a few years and can confidently say you won't find a better place around for a cozy night out, great drinks, and a meal that's as comforting as Thanksgiving dinner. Only place in town I'm aware of to get a decent Cuban sandwich anymore and that keeps me coming back. Many places say they have Cuban Sandwiches but they don't actually use Cuban bread. Service has been great the 5+ times I've been. Other food we've had has been great as well. Only complaint is not having the Cuban Sandwich on the lunch menu. I would have been here at least 5 more times.

The service was great! The Tuscan Chicken Pasta was delicious! It was a large portion and I enjoyed the mix of chicken and sausage. We also enjoyed the Bread Pudding for dessert. We will definitely be back!

My partner and I wanted to try something new, so after checking reviews I thought Coopers might fit the bill. Unfortunately we were really disappointed, I am so confused by the reviews on here because the food was pretty lackluster, at best (though we waited 30 mins to be seated). Menu choices were not at all exciting so I settled on an appetizer of the pulled pork nachos and a cup of the veggie cheese soup, he got the bourbon bacon burger. The burger was cooked perfectly to temp (yay!) but all of the food was lacking flavor and was lukewarm. Service was fine, not bad or outstanding. Didn't bother to take leftovers home. Won't be going back and would not recommend to others. If you want classy comfort food, I would MUCH more highly recommend Court Ave Brewing Co, for bar food in Valley Junction hit up The Longest Yard.

Cooper's on 5th is a small eatery/pub that does their craft well. We both had burgers, some of the best that we have had. I had the black and bleu burger; it was amazing. My Special Ladyfriend had the cielo burger and she really enjoyed it. The fries were really good and so was the fried zucchini. Pretty good selection of beers as well. Highly recommend! We will be back.

We've been here twice with our kids. Oddly, we'd never heard about the place, but found it on yelp after a basketball game nearby. Atmosphere is really cozy and distinctive, it reminds us of places we would go eat in New York. The menu is really interesting, it's limited to bar/comfort food, but you won't be disappointed. Kids eat for $5 including entree and side (no.drink). Each time we've been they have had daily specials on Flatbread pizza, soup, and entrees. The staff are accomodating (they bring out the coloring books and crayons for kids) and friendly. This is just a well executed American grill. This review doesn't do it justice. One of the better spots in Des moines for lunch. Keep it up!

Wonderful as always. Had the egg roll du jour (shrimp poboy) along with the pulled pork nachos, that alone is enough for most mortals! But the wife and I split 2 entrees (spare ribs and gouda Mac and cheese) but we screwed up and forgot about the nectar of the gods, of course I'm referring to the garlic parm dressing.. We did get some to go to make up for our bone headed gaffe. I of course sipped Matilda on tap all night but the wife had a tequila drink and a Mezcal drink, so we all know what that means later... Lastly, we finished the evening with some chocolate lave cake which was next to the devil... Not heaven, the other direction but all in the right ways! Don't skimp when you come here, try to make it a 9 course meal!

Full bar and domestic and many of my favorite import and micro-brews. We had my wife's parent's 50th wedding anniversary there and the owner and staff were great. Everyone had a terrific time!
