Why haven't I come here sooner?!? I am seriously in such awe with how well this business is run. We came in around 3pm on Saturday and each got a beer. They have a pretty decent tap list for being such a small place and you can't compete with these beer prices anywhere else in town! Andy was helping us at this time and he told us about the Happy Hour specials which go until 5pm. We ordered one of each of the bites they had featured for this menu. I also ordered the escargot + bone marrow because I was a little extra hungry. The escargot was good but it was missing something in my opinion. It seemed like the escargot was served with more oil/fat than normal. Because bone marrow is so fatty already I felt like the dish needed more herbs or citrus to brighten it up. The staff happily obliged and cut me some lemon wedges which really helped round out the dish for me. It was a 10/10 after the addition of some acid The 3 appetizers we ordered were absolutely flawless and I have absolutely no complaints. We had some bread left over from the escargot so we ordered some pepper jelly to finish that off. I am not a jelly person, but this was fantastic! It had just the right bit of heat and tang. We went to their sister store afterwards to buy ourselves a jar. For dessert, I wanted to finish with a cocktail. Wade was helping us at this time and helped me decide between two different drinks. He even did a special garnish for "the gram" so don't expect your drink to come this way unless specifically requested. Overall, a great experience. We sat at the bar which is my favorite way to enjoy a new restaurant. I feel like the setting is more intimate and you learn more about the establishment and what they offer. The staff obviously love their jobs and it shows in everything they do. Can't wait to go back!

Probably the best Mac and Cheese I’ve ever had. The Poutine was phenomenal, clearly hand cut and homemade fries. Loved the ambiance and feel! Don’t miss this place when you are in Des Moines!

Ordered the delicious lunch special: half a sandwich and side, the tomato soup. The sandwich had ham, bacon, an egg, and cheese (clearly) and was super delicious! The soup was very tomatoey and tasted fresh-- it was good, but would try another side before ordering the tomato soup again.

This was such an amazing experience. The wine selection is wonderful. The craft beer selection is a welcome surprise. All the staff are incredibly friendly and have great suggestions. We got the special: Rush Creek and Jam and it did not disappoint. Our server and the chef were excited for our reactions after trying it. It was perfectly curated and in hindsight I wish we would’ve skipped dinner elsewhere to eat the full size option of this snack. 100% would travel back to Des Moines to relive this moment.

Absolutely delicious! There wasn't one thing that we ate that I could have said was my favorite because all of it was amazing. The presentation is very fun and enjoyable! Staff is very knowledgeable on all of the menu items. Very fun atmosphere. We will come here again.

Best food in town! Can you say charcuterie?! Plus 30 draft lines and $6 wine by the glass all the time. Bubbles and Bites happy hour 2-5 with $5 glasses of sparkling wine and $5 snacks that change every week. See you there!

A cheese lovers paradise. The menu paired well with the outdoor dining and the staff are wonderful people. Lunch combos with hearty options and portions make for a pleasant lunch outing with friends. The balsamic/fig jam grilled cheese with the crispy bacon is worth a double take. Soup was fresh and made in house and hand cut fries or tart lemon salad are both great choices for sides. Happy hour is prime and Ingersoll is an underrated gem of DSM. Go check it out.

We came here for drinks and dinner and the Cheese Bar did not disappoint! They have a large selection of local craft beer and plenty of food options. We got the THC sandwich and the cheese curds and they were both really flavorful and delicious. If you are in the area, the Cheese Bar is a must stop!

The food quality has significantly dropped since the last time I was there over a year ago. All of the foods were extremely oily. It seemed as if everything was just dipped in olive oil and then fried and then soaked again. Even the standard mac and cheese tasted oily. On the upside they had a great selection of hard to find beer and wine. Since it is an open room design it was pretty loud for an evening meal.

I just love this place! The staff is always so nice. The owners are super passionate and friendly. The food is consistently amazing and I love the atmosphere. The rotating menu is so fun and keeps me coming back!

The food was pretty good although could have been better for the price. The seating was some of the most uncomfortable I have ever encountered at a restaurant, I guess they want people in and out. The service was average and the wait for food was looooooong. It wasn't busy when we arrived so I don't know what the hold up was.

A vegan who frequents the cheese bar - who would have thought ?! They have the best happy hour with $5 vollereaux champagne and rose and a beautiful sunshiny patio that is dog friendly. I love getting their lemon preserve salad (hold the cheese) and snacking on marcona almonds and frescatrano olives! yum! The staff is super cute and knowledgeable too and its always a vibe.

What a great little restaurant! Great drink selections and menu options. I like that dishes can be sized for a meal, or tasting. Toast comes split in half, had one toast, a side salad, and side mac. Also had the chipotle cheese curds which disappeared before I could get a picture. The chipotle sauce is well balanced, not too hot, and I'm disappointed I couldn't bring a bottle back with me to FL. I will definitely be back next trip to Des Moines!

I think I've been here enough now to safely say that everything on the menu is delicious, and you won't be disappointed. They have raclette, which is my absolute favorite cheese dish, and it's hard to find it in the states. The beer and wine selection are great, too. The only thing that might be off-putting to some is the sort of communal seating arrangement. I don't really mind it, but sometimes it is a little awkward or annoying if you get seated next to a loud or large group. I don't think it's bad enough to take away from the rest of the excellent food and service I've had.

My husband and I visited the Cheese Bar this week for the first time and were really impressed. We both got a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. Both were phenomenal! My husbad even said it was probably the best Mac and cheese he's ever had (and we've eaten a lot of Mac and cheese). The staff were very friendly, attentive, and were very Covid cautious (wearing masks and gloves, handing out new paper menus for each table, etc.). We had tried to visit previously but the wait was too long, but are glad we decided to try again. Definitely worth it if you can get in at a good time! We will certainly be visiting again with friends and family!

Superb food, top notch staff, -1 star for noise. NEW. Still great food!! Try the Bacon and Blue grilled cheese.. Who knew fig sauce could be so wonderful?!? It was quiet this time until more people came in. THE PLACE for charcuterie!

Mixed feelings...meat and cheese board was delicious. All of it. It was presented beautifully and all the flavors complimented each other very well. The cheese curds however were over fried so all the cheese had cooked out through the batter leaving mostly airy batter. Would not recommend the cheese curds especially for $10. The environment is really neat and the staff was very very nice and helpful. However we waited over an hour for our food. Our order was "messed up" as the waitress said so she had to double check it. Also I've been to communal seating restaurants before but this one seemed very unorganized and awkward...we watched a couple sit down opposite of each other and then 20min later a group of 4 crammed in next to them so they had very little room. Needless to say, they moved.

We visited the Cheese Bar around dinner time on a Friday. The place was busy, but service remained good. We ordered food and drinks and they came out quickly. The ingredients are all high quality and locally sourced, which we appreciated. I expected more out of the grilled cheese, but the Mac and cheese was great, and we will return for that. One key differentiator is that it's a baked Mac and cheese, and is crispy on the top with a creamy cheese sauce underneath. If you're expecting shells and cheese from a box you will be sorely disappointed. Overall a great experience.

I highly reccomend this place! The food and service were excellent. I ordered a classic grilled cheese with tomato soup and it took probably 5 minutes to cook and serve to me. My server was very attentive and checked in with me often. The food was delicious and well priced too!

hot take (!!) is my favorite place to eat in DSM. love learning about the cheese/meat/pickle selections from the servers who are always super engaged and knowledgeable. definitely a great place to explore your adventurous side - and the staff can be really nice when a suggestion doesn’t work out! we tried the pickled beets and promptly exchanged it for some extra cumin pickles instead. otherwise have been blown away by goat cheeses, blue and cheddar blends, the prosciutto, the sour cherry jam, funky and nutty parm like options, and more. also have to recommend their wine list, including the wines on the back shelves - some hidden gems are back there!

Great new spot and addition to the Ingersoll/Grand area--actually a great addition for Des Moines, period. Very personable and knowledgeable servers who offered up great recommendations. Loved the beer selection. The hype of this place probably won't cool down for awhile so don't be surprised if you have to wait a little while before being seated.

Much more roomy than the 42nd Street location, but could be even bigger still and would fill the seats. Love the beer list and new glasses (very Torst-like for anyone familiar with that bar in Brooklyn). Our sandwiches were really good as was the cheese board. We will be back! Park in the back to keep yourself sane while hunting for a spot on Ingersoll.

I like to go to to the Cheese Bar. I have been there several times. Every time I have had excellent service, fantastic food and an overall nice experience. I have been there for dinner, lunch and happy hour. It is just a nice place to hang out. Definitely should be on everyone's place to visit in Des Moines.

The Cheese Bar is good. Food is well made and presented well. It seemed that staff really knew their cheeses and meats. The service was fast and friendly. The only weird thing they do is serve beer in a wine glass! I'm a blue collar guy who, when he pays $6-8 for a beer wants a full pint of beer! I don't think that's too much to ask for... 😁

This is an amazing place! Outstanding service, great atmosphere, and delicious food. We enjoyed cheese curds, tried quite a few of the grilled cheese sandwiches, loved the wine, but the showstopper was the smorgasbord. We had the one that serves 5-8 people and it was phenomenal! Our server explained everything that was on the board with enthusiasm, and it was neat to try some local meats and cheeses. It was beautifully put together and so fun to eat. Definitely try this place, you won't be disappointed!

Hit or miss. There are some items that are amazing like the cheese curds and some of their sandwiches. But the wine selection is disappointing and the Mac and cheese each time I’ve had it has been burnt and dry.

A friend and I love coming here, but took 15 months away because of covid. We've been back a few times in the past months as we make our way back towards normal. The food is always good. If you visit around lunch or dinner, either way you'll probably enjoy whatever you order. The bacon onion Mac is one of my favorites and I really recommend it! Their wine selection is great, by the bottle or glass. If wine isn't your thing, they've always got beers and ciders etc on tap. I genuinely appreciate all of the staff continuing to wear masks, and we still do as well if we're not sitting at the table. The seating now is more open and much easier to get a bit of distance between yourself and others. The staff is always awesome! It's why we're going to keep coming back. All in all, Cheese Bar is one of our fave places in DSM.

Got the Cuban and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The bread was perfectly toasted ingredients were flavorful and the cheese was unbelievable. I also got the key lime brulé which was interesting. I would definitely return to try the other options.

Absolutely great food! A must to stop by and eat especially if you like cheese. The portions are very adequate, if you walk out hungry you have not finished the food that they brought out for you. The beers on tap are unique cold and good. Very nice selection of wines, you will find something that will suit everyone's taste.

We got ours to go, but honestly, if you like cheese you will love this place. We got the deluxe smorgasboard and, well, it's amazing. The cheese selections are great, the meats are top notch, the pickles are made in house (pickled shredded beets...I'll finally eat beets!), just top notch. Service is always great. Friendly, knowledgeable, prompt. Love this place.

Went here with some friends last night on their recommendation and loved it! Perfect spot for cheese, meat, and beer lovers. I got their baked Mac and cheese with pepper jam and a prosciutto toast and it was phenomenal. My husband got the ham and cheese sandwich, and our friends got the cheese curds and a meat and cheese board. Everything we tried was delicious and the cheese board was explained very well by one of the waiters. A really fun place to pop in and a very casual and relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be going back!

We picked up a charcuterie board for 5 to 8 people. There was plenty of everything for all. The selection of cheeses and meats are excellent as well as veggies, figs and tasty sauces. Will definitely do this again and we don't live anywhere near the restaurant. It's worth the drive.

Excellent. I really like the bread that my wife and I got for an appetizer. It was exceptional. Then we got the Mac and Cheese with bacon. Also delicious. Then we got a grilled cheese that had some smoked pork on it. Amazing. Next time I will get a meat and cheese tray I think.

This was my first time at this restaurant, and boy was it perfect. We started with the beer, cocktails, tomatoes and cheese curds as appetizers, both of which were very tasteful with just the right amount of saltiness. Personally, I had "The Champ" sandwich and paired it with a cup of their delicious tomato soup. My friends each had the Royal and mac & cheese respectfully - Likewise, each of them loved their food as well. We topped it off with a lemon & basil creme brulee split among the three of us. Overall - The staff was very friendly and helpful with food suggestions, the drinks were cold, the food was hot, all of which made this night out with friends really perfect. Whomever reads/replies to these comments, please let your staff know that they did an amazing job tonight.

We had fondue and shared it between three, so we also had entree's. The fondue was great. Order the extra apples. All of the items to dip we're tasty and each of us had a different favorite. The Mac and Cheese was awesome as well. Family style tables are good with me. Just be ready that you're not going to have intimate conversations over your meal. We had a small wait for a Friday night. They were kind and asked if we wanted drinks while we waited. A nice first experience and I plan to be back.

This is the best restaurant I've ever been to. The staff was so amazing, nice, and helpful. The drink choices were unique and the cheese was amazing. The meat was impeccable, I was so fascinated with the chef making the boards, he really enjoyed constructing them. The atmosphere was calm, relaxing, and casual. We ended up talking to the people next to us our entire meal. I'm planning my next trip to Des Moines around this restaurant.

It was absolutely phenomenal. However, the food was a tad bit salty. Cheese has a naturally salty flavor, so when I added bacon to the mac n cheese, it was almost way too much salt. Naturally, this is all personal preference. Overall, very good food and wonderful atmosphere. I felt like I was back in Portland with the Mason jar glasses and art studio stools!

Was really hoping to love Cheese Bar, but it disappointed or was average in all areas of my experience. The place was not busy, as it was late afternoon, yet it was ridiculously loud where we could barely hear our server. We ordered a drink and it was never brought but we were charged for it. And the time it took to bring our other drinks and one charcuterie board was way too long. In addition to that, we stated no blue cheese yet we got a cheddar with blue cheese. Pretty subpar for a first time visit. Maybe fun for a simple friends or family visit, but I would not bring a date or anyone im trying to impress.

This place has some unique drinks. It had good service. And had a great tap list. I was a little disappointed in my charcuterie board when they asked if I knew what I liked and disliked and specifically said brie cheeses and well aged cheeses are not our thing, what came out but an aged brie cheese an aged other cheese that was unbearable and a very delicious goat cheese. Soooo... 1 for 3? This place has some amazing potential. The rest of the food was quite delicious. The mixed drink menu could use some expanding. And the wine list although diverse was missing some essentials. I would still say if you are passing by feel free to give this place a visit. It was definitely interesting.

Made a reservation for their Valentine's Dinner. The dinner was so great! Each course flowed very well and was presented beautifully. It was definitely pricey but worth it for the special occasion. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Hoping to come back soon.

I am in a blissful total food coma after enjoying a meal at Cheese Bar. We had eaten at the Cheese Shop a couple of times, but we finally made it to their restaurant. Our group shared a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches which elevates the once humble grilled cheese to unforseen new heights. We also had the legendary Mac and Cheese in a cast iron skillet. I want to eat one of these every day for the rest of my life. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. I highly recommend it.

Cheese Bar is a DSM must eat! Their changing menu coupled with their knowledgeable staff is an 11/10. Andy is wonderful, and the drinks are even better. Pro tip: try the Henry the VIII drink, you won't be disappointed.

Super fun atmosphere, and the people are great. Kinda pricey, but it's not your run of the mill food either. If you like a little bit of hipster/bougie, it's the place for you! I think the punch was my favorite... wow it was good!

Really enjoyed the fondue. The Mac and cheese was flavorful, but was slightly dry. The beer selection is great, lots of choices and some rare brews. The prices are a little expensive for what you get. Still a good place to visit and try once in a while though.

There are items for kids, my 8 year old enjoyed a dinner here. Younger kids I'm not sure if they would enjoy it the same or not.

Excellent! The service was great and so was the food. My SO and I split the fondue (at least enough food for 3, possibly 4) and I was stuffed afterward with plenty leftover. A very fun way to have a meal, and it would be great for an evening out with friends. Will definitely be going again.

I had been wanting to try cheese bar for a while but had heard from friends that it’s overpriced and mediocre but gave it a try. I found it was exactly as they described. I got the classic grilled cheese and it was good sized and delicious. I also got the tomato soup which was not really tomato soup. My server said it was infused with carrots and red peppers with a basil pesto drizzle and I got more of a purée and it did not taste anything like tomatoes and was gross. Overall I had a good experience there and would possibly go back.

The food here is really good--especially if you like cheese! I know from experience that both the Mac & Cheese and Muffaletta sandwich are delicious. Unfortunately, on our last visit, there was a very long wait to ask for drinks and then to bring our food. Service wasn't like that the previous two visit, so I'll chalk it up to a bad day.

They have a great menu, fun and trendy atmosphere, and great drinks. The location is in a trendier part of the city but the parking isn't great as you either need to use street parking or find a lot behind the row of stores to park in, if it's permitted. The night we were there a lot of folks were ordering charcuterie trays and because they were busy we didn't get our tray until after we had already eaten our entrees. They actually got my order wrong and so I had to wait for them to make my correct order so I could eat. Our waitress wasn't very attentive but she was friendly. I ordered a grilled cheese with this type of sauce on it but it ended up being smothered so much in the sauce that it became soggy. I would like to give this place another try because I love cheese and am hoping the issues that evening were just a fluke and not representative of the service here.

I could get a Hendry Cab bottle for $28. the cheeseplates looked good, but I had the Cuban and it was too smokey send the mustard and pickle were not standard and was just okay. The Royal was a great concept and pretty good. better than the Cuban. the soup of the day was mushroom barley and one taste and they should have paid me to taste it. It was like dirty water soup. Mac and Cheese was great. Beer selection was excellent and I did not have beer. I like this place, but would not select as a dinner destination. Will return and enjoy for wine, beer, cheese plates, and select sandwhich options.

My opinion is probably in the minority but I miss the old Cheese Shop :( We've been customers of CJ since the very beginning but the new Cheese Bar just lacks the "niceness" of the Shop. We visited for the 1st time on Friday and expected it to be busy and it was. No problems there. But like most open places these days, the noise level and crowding was just too much. At the Shop, it was always packed as well but the smaller space and wood materials somehow made it seem more "homey". The front serving area was wonderful for browsing cheese and meat selections while you waited for a table. The mustards and other gourmet items were constantly tempting you and reminding you of the quality of the offerings. At the new location the high ceilings, open spaces and modern materials combined with hard angular surfaces, made the place a fantastic echo chamber, which killed any attempts at normal conversation. Plus it felt way too antiseptic and modern. Also I felt there was an "over-emphasis" on beer in my opinion that overshadowed the cheese and other eats. It's just not my thing. The food was excellent but I think the location is just not what it should be. I would pay DOUBLE to have fondue at the old Cheese Shop if possible! I miss that place :( I wish it could be available at both places. At the Shop, when CJ once offered me a tour of the downstairs, I felt literally honored to be able to peek into the place where all the magic happened. The "cheese vault" as he described it to me, was my little slice of dairy Heaven. I wanted to stay down there forever :) I have a terrible feeling that the same tour of the Cheese Bar would yield nothing more than the standard industrial kitchen found in so many other places. So if you have no memory of the Shop, the Bar is certainly a great place to visit. Though I'm not sure if I'll be coming back.
