Absolutely phenomenal. The food, the service, the atmosphere, everything. This is one of the first fully vegan restaurants I've visited and it blew me away. Everyone, those vegan and those interested in exploring veganism, will find something to fall in love with on the menu. We are already planning our next date night to go back!

This is a cute little vegan restaurant with a big punch of awesomeness! My hubby and I enjoyed the warm service and delish food. My hubby in particular was in heaven eating the fried breaded shrimp and the special of the day cheesecake! Delish. Highly recommend!

As a non vegan myself this place is amazing! The "shrimp" was delicious. Definitely, fooled me lol. Our entrées were very tasty. I got the pho soup which was huge with a side of mushrooms. I definitely recommend this restaurant. Such a cute restaurant.

Their kung pao ding with Oyster mushrooms is one of the best things I’ve eaten in a while! Their desserts are decadent as well. My friends ordered their “shrimp” and while I was skeptical at first, I actually really enjoyed the texture and flavor. This is probably one of my favorite vegan spots in Chicago.

Veg family. Mom loves the Tom Ka (faux shrimp is her favorite). Dad loves the Heavenly Curry and the Crab Rangoon especially. Teen daughter loves the Teriyaki Chikn. 7 year old son has a mango lassi addiction. Family-friendly atmosphere, fantastic service, beautiful experience always.

I am not vegan, or vegetarian. I was at work and I was given the satay skewer and fell in love. It tasted like a real chicken satay. So flavorful so I decided to come and check out the restaurant. I also ordered the ramen and the mush love (inspired by korean fried chicken). Everything is delicious! You can’t go wrong here. Update: went back because I saw that they had a boba milk tea cake that looked delicious! Sure enough, it was HEAVENLY!

Best vegan restaurant I have eaten at in the Chicago area! Love the menu, there are so many great options. I have had the Kung Pao Ding twice is was so good. Relays can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. We will be back again soon!

super cute vegan restaurant! the staff was super friendly and my food was delicious. the bibimbop comes in the traditional stone bowl which makes the rice crispy at the bottom. i also got the matcha cheesecake to take home and which had a great flavor but had a little bit of a grainy texture

Unique, flavorful, and fantastic service. I’ve been vegan 16 years and I always recommend this place. The run away potato is my favorite item on the menu. IMO Their Burger w/ cheese is the best party in all of Chicago.

Pho-nominal!!! Like wow would you just look at this? This isn’t even all the noodles it came with, plenty more for a noodle refill. The pho is so yummy, and I typically don’t care for most meat substitutes but the “ham” is so freakin tender and delicious!! The Rangoon is also absolutely scrumptious. I really enjoyed the two dishes together as a pair.

Talk about happy accidents! We were on the area looking for vegan spots and thankfully the white rabbit (goggle) suggested Alice & Friends. Asian inspired is not my favorite however, I was in for a surprise. Everything we had was DELICIOUS however, the service was SPECTACULAR! We will definitely 100% be back there soon. Great food, great service, great prices!

My husband and I LOVED this place. The key lime cheesecake was perfect! The dol sot bi bim bap was delicious! The waitstaff was so nice and eager to share recommendations as well. We overall very much enjoyed our meal. Someone at a nearby table ordered Korean barbecue, I am going to have to try that next time. The curry and Strawberry shortcake are also fantastic. And everything is vegan!!

If you're looking for vegan fried chicken this is the place. The must love appetizer is amazing. The texture of the mushrooms is very similar to the meat on a drumstick. I also tried their mushroom stir fry with a variety of mushrooms and it did not disappoint. Another must try is the chocolate banana shake but I'd call it a Mexican licuado because it didn't have the consistency of a shake. Definitely deserves more visits as long as that app is on the menu.

Cozy atmosphere and friendly employees. I really liked the Alice in Wonderland decor. I wasn't sure how to feel about the Mush Love (fried king mushroom) appetizer; it was too chewy and grisly for my liking. However, the walnut shrimp was fantastic. The tea menu was impressively extensive and on-theme. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the raw tiramisu with cocoa powder.

Hands down the best Asian restaurant in the area, let alone the best vegan restaurant on the North side. I have dined in and had carry out. Everything has been incredible. I am thrilled to finally have crab Rangoon after entering my 7th year of being vegan. I randomly tried the golden breeze, wow! It’s salad with a pile of yummy chewy noodles, sweet/ savory faux beef that had great texture, fresh veggies & basil, tangy rice vinegar dressing and a crunchy vegan egg roll on top, basically all my favorite foods in one dish. The king oyster mushroom sandwich is huge and yummy, dripping with coleslaw and sauce, so good! We have also had several appetizers such as dumplings and the mushroom bites, every sauce has been amazing. Non vegans I have brought have been equally happy with everything as well. Service is friendly, with a nice chill atmosphere!

Wow wow wow. Wow. This place was really good. Some of the apps were just so delicious. We had the fried tofu and the fried mushrooms and we could've eaten those all day. The entrees were also great, along with the dessert. Many GF options if that's your thing as well. I will eagerly return to continue to eat my way through the menu

I like a few plates, the ones that are not greasy or least greasy (unfortunately most of the menu is greasy). What I like "Grace's chicken teriyaki" is amazing and I have eaten that both of my last times here. I always go with my vegan activist friends from our ONG Anonymous for the Voiceless. We ar the voice for animals, they don't have a voice. Find us in Facebook under "AV: Chicago, IL". We are one chapter of the biggest vegan activism group that holds an abolitionist stance. Join us and be a voice for the animals about 2 Saturdays afternoon a month by the water tower. "Vegans don't save animals, they just stop taking what was never theirs to take. Alice and Friends is my family’s favorite place to order from! The employees are nice and well informed about food allergies. The food is sooo good. The flavors are unlike anything else I’ve had in Chicago, and you can tell that they use quality ingredients. I crave the Burmese Noodles all the time! It also holds up well with delivery, and the portions are great.

Hands down the best restaurant in which I have EVER had the pleasure of enjoying a meal! The menu is huge, the food is astounding, the service is excellent. The staff made my friend and I feel at home from the moment we walked in the door. Trust me, you do NOT have to be vegan to absolutely love this place. Save room for dessert (or take it home) because it will knock your socks off! TYSM Alice’s!

Omg, my daughter and I tried this place for the first time and was blown away. We tried the bao and it was so soft and fluffy and good. The pan fried dumplings were perfect and flavorful. I swear we wanted another order but wanted to save room for our entrees lol. I ordered the king wich and it was sooo good. Although it was smaller than the ones constantly pictured by the restaurant I still enjoyed it. The batter on the mushroom was that of the Chinese chicken wings if you were to order them. My daughter had the noble burger and she loved it. The fries were cooked to perfection. We got meals to take home as well. That golden yuba fried rice is off the mf chain good! The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because of the zucchini bread. It was awfully small and dry for $5. I just threw it out. I asked our waitress about some of the baked goods as well and she described some as dry so perhaps the owner needs to address this. Other than that, we’ll definitely be back.

They have been a go to for me for years. Good and healthy. My only note is YOUR VIETNAMESE DISHES NEED MORE HERBS. Have to take a star away for all the viet dishes I have tried of yours. I will not be ordering any more of your Vietnamese inspired dishes until you revamp. It’s almost disrespectful to receive ONE small basil leaf with a Pho . Broth was decent but it barely came with any toppings that you usually add in. (I love both vietnamese food usually)

Maybe my favorite vegan food in the city. Truly something for everyone and everything I’ve tried here so far is absolutely delicious and full of flavor. Alice and Friends even catered my wedding shower and the meat eating guests were swooning. Highlights for me are the Tom Kha soup, Grace’s Teryaki, the Noble Burger (get the cheese, you won’t regret it) and the bao…never leave without getting the bao. Editing to add the shrimp. Also get the shrimp!

Absolutely hands down the best vegan restaurant Chicago has to offer. I’ve never eaten anything here that was any less than amazing. The dining in environment is awesome topped with the cutest little bottles of siracha. My most favorite things to order are any appetizers, particularly the drumsticks, crab Rangoons, and satay skewers, and my go to entrees are kung pao ding, Korean BBQ, and the bahn mi, their desserts are also insanely delicious. I love this restaurant and can’t say enough good things about this spot. Definitely come spend your money here because it is such a gem !

I love that it’s byob and the servers are super nice I love to tip them cause they’re so nice and have the best vibes! The food is amazing I love the Korean bbq and Mac n cheese and the green tea ice cream! Great place to go to. They are closed Tuesdays tho so don’t forget to check their schedule before going

Delicious! I had the Heavenly Curry and it was so good! The portion was large so I had enough for dinner and leftovers for breakfast (yep it was that good I couldn't wait for lunch). Large portion, decent prices. Seemed to have good gluten free options as well. Edit: Returned for take out and was disappointed to receive half the portion.

I love their banh mi, ramen, crab Rangoon, and fried turmpet mushrooms! Those dishes have been a bit each time I've gotten them. Some of their rice dishes are hit or miss, their Korean BBQ has been flavorless a few times I've gotten it. The servers are always very friendly though! Definitely try their desert!

Their food has been spot on amazing every time I've been there since they changed back to "Alice and Friends". It's all vegan and all delicious. Bahn Mi sandwich is the best vegan one I've had in Chicago. I love the Run Away Potato and the Popcorn nuggets are delicious. The new Mushroom Wonderland is super tasty. I've literally never had anything bad here and I've had most of the menu. The green tea cheesecake, wow. Most of the menu is Asian focused but they even have burgers and mac and cheese (the cheese is one of the tastiest vegan cheeses, and they make it in house).

WONDERFUL vegan restaurant that is affordable and just puts out amazing food. I would suggest this restaurant for anybody who is normally "afraid" of vegetarian/vegan cuisine, as the flavors were simply incredible. We started with the Vegan crab rangoon that tasted identical to its usual counterpart, with a great sweet and sour sauce that complimented it quite well. Next up was the Tomka soup which featured a coconut broth with lime, lemongrass and all that good stuff. It has a nice "back-end" spiciness that just warms the back of your throat up on its way down, without upsetting the balance of flavors and getting in the way. Paired with some good mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, baby corns, etc. It was easily one of the more delightful and interesting soups I've had in awhile. My friend and I also split 2 rainbow rolls, which were so fresh and amazing. The peanut sauce had a nice tang, and had a great consistency. The rice vinegar also gave it a nice kick. The nearly-transparent rice paper made it a visual treat to behold as well. Finally onto the main course (I DID eat a lot of food but I'll get to that) where I ordered the Bahn Mi, what i would almost call a "vegan viatnamese philly steak sandwich" that comes with jalapenos (et al), they cook the veg. protein in a nice sweet-spicy sauce and you can ask for spicy mayo alongside it too if you'd like. I wanted something really spicy and this did not disappoint. After all the crazy amounts of food my friend and I ordered, it only came to like 20 a person--so likely less if you have a more sensible appetite. The coolest part with all of that cuisine is that I had eaten nearly everything (I definitely recall not having leftovers), yet my body had no pain. Eating one of the healthiest meals in likely years, you could splurge relatively guilt-free here because everything is so fresh and healthy.

Awesome awesome awesome! From the service to the food, this did not disappoint. They do take reservations but it was surprisingly ok on a Friday night. Paid street parking was easy to find. Service was friendly, the server was helpful in choosing between options and helped me figure out which dishes can be made mild. Ordered the Kung Pao Ding (without the chili) and the Sweet & Sour Cauliflower. Loved them both, though I was not a huge fan of the large strips of ginger in the Kung Pao. But it was easy enough to pick out and both dishes were still very tasty. Definitely save room for dessert and don't let the vegan options fool you- both desserts were so rich and amazing. We got the Chocolate Mousse Pie and the Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse bar. Delicious. I can't wait to go back and try more things!

The BEST vegan restaurant in Chicago, hands down. I would even say it’s the best restaurant in Chicago period, but as a vegan that would be bias lol. Alice & Friends has all the wonderful and delicious flavors you’d want and expect in your food whether you’re vegan or not vegan. In the mood for American food? They got it. (Mac and cheese is to die for!) Want asian food? They’re experts at that. Don’t even get me started on the desserts!!!! My partner (non-vegan) & I regularly travel from the south suburbs to be spoiled by this amazing food. My personal favorite is the banh mi. You can come here if you're in the mood to be healthy or a junk foodie. The perfect place to bring omni’s, friends or family because there truly is something for everybody & not a single dish at Alice & Friends disappoints. Everything is absolutely mind blowing and delicious beyond expectations. Please keep making your amazing food forever! :’)

Went on a Sunday lunch and got a table right away. The place was packed the other day. I had the heavenly curry and my hubby had the korean bbq. Both were great, and packed with flavor. Even if we aren't really vegan, the veggie meat used in the bbq was totally flavorful & one wouldn't know the difference! We had the matcha and cookie dough soy baced icecream for dessert. We'll be back at this healthy resto and try to have at least a day of meatless food every week!

Food***** We rarely give 5 stars but Alice and Friend’s Vegan Kitchen is by far some of the best vegan Asian cuisine that we’ve had in America. You will be more than pleased with all the textures, flavors, and smells that Alice and Friend’s bring to the table. I give Alice five rabbits, very clean restaurant excellent food ( first time there ) friendly staff. I tried the Kung Pao and it was great, that was my first impression, meaning I will be back soon to try other culinary specialties. The only thing I would recommend is bigger sign that is sticking out and inviting, it should stand out in that neighborhood as you are. Thanks for the great experience

This is the spot! The atmosphere is clean and quaint. Is also very inviting. The staff/servers are wonderful and accommodating. The food is to live for. The menu is so awesome the way it marks which items are gluten-free, soy-free, sugar-free, oil-free, nut-free, etc. The menu is extensive and versatile. One bonus is that the order-to-eat time is perfect. The prices are good and the food is even better. I love it. Go there now!

I love this place for vegan food. The fried shrimp appetizer is so good and tastes and feels so much like shrimp that I had to ask. Served with tartar sauce but really could use cocktail sauce as an additional choice. On this visit I ordered the Chow Mein Noodles and barely got through it. Vegetables were at a total minimum. The seasoning on this dish tasted too salty for me and no sauces we're available on the table. Raw desert choices were in the $7.95 range and I thought that a bit pricey. Dinner for two came in at $65 dollar range including 20% tip. I think some menu choices are definitely better than others and because of that and the price it's not an all the time place to eat for me but enjoy visiting when I do.

I've been here a few times and every time has been absolutely amazing. By far, the best part about this place is the flavor of the food. Tonight, I tried the delicious Banh Mi, but I've also had Burmese Noodles Salad (outstanding) and shared the lady fingers and satay skewers with my fiance (incredibly tasty). Everything is so, so flavorful. The next best thing are the people. The staff is friendly, they have a great sense of humor, and they are very attentive, whether you're dining in or carrying out. Lastly, but certainly not least, is the fact that everything here is vegan. The ingredients are sustainable and the meals have always left me without that weight and bloat of a meat-based meal somewhere else. I always finish my meal feeling like I've given my body something good to digest, not just an overload of salt, carbs and protein. Whether you're vegan or not, this restaurant definitely needs a visit.

I really wanted to like this place, but I was somewhat disappointed. I ordered the spring rolls and laksa while my best friend ordered the dumplings and ramen. The dumplings and spring rolls were great. The ramen was strangely sweet, while the laksa was flavorful but not spicy as advertised. We both had stomachaches afterward as well, which led us to cut our time together short. All in all, it was not a great experience for almost $30 per person, especially when there are lots of delicious Vietnamese places that are happy to make vegan/vegetarian food for a third of the price just down the road.

Great ambience, with fantastic service. Had the pan fried dumplings. Great way to start the meal. Followed it up with the roasted sesame ramen, the broth was very rich and reminiscent to tonkotsu ramen. I personally don't like tonkotsu, so I ended up having to water down the broth a bit. Finished the meal with a green tea cheese cake. Pretty impressed with the meal as a whole considering it was all vegan. I definitely want to come back again and try their huge menu of entrees and desserts.

We had a great experience this past Saturday night for our large group of eleven people. The staff assembled a large table for us and made us feel right at home with them. They checked in with us regularly throughout the evening, without rushing us, and allowed us to enjoy the wonderful food and good conversation. We ordered the Bibimbop (pictured) and Korean bbq which we tried based on recommendations online & were not disappointed! Another member of the group ordered the Pho & it smelled amazing. I would definitely go back to try it, as well as, their desserts, which I wish I had room left for :). Another big plus is that they are BYOB too. What a fun evening. Thank you!

Delicious meal. Incredible burger, no semi-chemical taste that you sometimes get with vegan patties. Phenomenal cheese. Full of flavor without relying on the condiments and toppings. Fries are crispy and yummy. The carrot cake is the best I’ve had in my 4 years being vegan. The potato and corn soup is also unbelievable. You really can’t go wrong at Alice’s.

Healthy vegan fare set against modest decor. I was impressed by the menu’s flavor variety, selection, and ability to accommodate allergies and restrictions. I was disappointed by the service. Our server said they were new and learning, but I’ll still share: we were brought the wrong drinks, the main dishes came out 5-10 minutes apart, and the appetizer that we ordered before anything else arrived as we were almost done with the main meal. They were out of the limited time matcha cake that was still advertised on the chalk board. The food was good, but not “omg” amazing. It’s far better than 99% of the vegan offerings in Lincoln, Nebraska, where I live currently, but compared to the heavy-hitters among the Chicago vegan scene, it’s just average. The worst part of my experience was sitting next to a table that had a shih tzu type dog (no indication of it being a service animal) eating from the table and jumping between seats. One of the staff came over and talked to the table...to say how good it was to see them. Apparently regulars are above the health code. Also, the handle of my drink had a weird little alcove that seemed to catch gunk and seemingly wasn’t cleaned (see picture). Overall, I’d eat there again despite all that, just to try out the full offerings on the menu.

The food is good but I got really sick from there and am too afraid to eat again. I read someone else had a similar issue due to allergies. I have celiac, so I worry it's not safe for gluten allergies even though the menu indicates such. I'm not too sensitive to cross contamination either, so I think they don't understand what gluten is. Do you guys know soy sauce and all brown sauce has it? Idk what else it could be. Not to mention delivery takes over 2 hours which is insane.

I got the heavenly Curry and it was true to it's name. I'm a big fan of butternut squash and sweet potatoes. Both were included in the dish. The restaurant had a little traffic, but we didn't have to wait on a Wednesday night at 8 and the food came fairly quickly. I'm a wimp when it comes to spice and the seasoning was just right for me with the heavenly Curry.

I'm delighted most of all that it's close to my neighborhood; so, biking home from their location is the perfect remedy for eating too much. There's a wide variety of desserts - FABULOUS. I had a really great time here! The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the food they are serving. The menus options are pretty good, with an Asian food influence on it. I had the Mac and cheese which is on the kids menu, but still a satisfying portion for adults. Portion size is a lot smaller than most restaurants though. It’s also a bring your own booze place. So my party brought in some wine, which makes it cheaper than getting a glass at a restaurant tbh. They have tons of different gluten free, soy free, nut free, sesame free, etc options.

This place seriously changed my attitude towards eating out! i’m SO glad i found this place. it has a large gluten free menu (with gluten substitutes) that’s allergen friendly, and is 100% vegan. Anyone with cealiac knows my struggle in finding good foods to eat hassle-free. it’s impossible. But this place gives you a huge option to chose from of gf food and it’s SO yummy. not to mention, not way overpriced like many other vegan restaurants. i called in the other day because i didn’t see an item listed on their online menu (just curious if they only sold it for sit down), the man i spoke to was so kind and said that they were just out of bok choi, and immediately relisted the dish without question just so i could order. seriously amazing place, seriously amazing people too.

This place is really good! I'm always thankful for a place with lots of gluten-free options. Though I normally enjoy my meals here, there have been a few occasions where I found things a bit bland. The Heavenly Curry and Mama's Love soup are always great though! I wish they would bring back the Kimbap!!

My husband and I had rode our bikes to the restaurant and I had leftovers but they usually offer a to go box that I KNOW I would’ve dropped if I tried riding with it. Also, if I had tried putting that in my bag it would’ve spilled and I would’ve been hating myself for not thinking and the whole experience. But I asked kindly IF they would happen to have a ziplock bag and she told me they were not the type of location that might have one, but that she would go to the back and look or ask for one. Well, she found one and I was able to take my delicious plate of noodles with the most amazing HOT chili I’ve ever had home. Meddles to say I ate my noodles the next day and they were SO good. My hubby and I are planning on going there again in about two more weeks. Sooooooo I’ll make sure to carry my own ziplock bag just in case. But I do and did appreciate them for trying. 🥰🥰🥰 Also, didn’t have time to take pictures of the food, because I was busy eating some of it and chatting with friends I had not seen in over a year. ♥️

The coconut based soup was a little watery than it should have been and I wasn't a fan of them charging extra for requesting a dish to be extra spicy, it's not something that I've seen in other places. The food and service are phenomenal! Everyone here, the staff and the patrons, are incredibly pleasant and friendly. The food is simply delicious. It feels like they focus on the quality of the recipes as much as, if not more than, the devotion to vegan cuisine. Unlike the vegan food that you might find at the supermarket, these dishes don't seem vegan or have the stereotypical stigma that vegan cuisine often carries. They seem like well thought out restaurant dishes that happen to be vegan as well as flavorful and creative. I'm not vegan and I thoroughly enjoy coming here for dine-in or takeout. The Spicy BBQ and the Banh Mi are particularly good, and if you can sample the Ladyfingers you'll be very happy.

Formerly Loving Hut. I used to love this place and considered it the best vegan/veg in Chicago. It still has the same owners but from my last trip it seemed that the quality had slipped some. Flavors not quite as bold. Love letters from earth salad not quite as filled with matchstick thin sliced goodies. I’d still give it a second chance, but it dropped a star from past reviews. But still, a lot of great dishes. And a wonderful Cinnamon/ginger tea - which they did not have available last time.

My 1st time here. Everything was pretty good minus the sweet and sour cauliflower. It was too oily and unfortunately lacked the strong flavor that sweet n sour usually has. The dish really could have used more sauce overall. It was served with rice which I didnt even finish due to the fact that there wasnt any sauce to soak up with the rice. Our appetizers were good as was my friend's dish. I would go back to try other dishes but for Asian food, personally, I would go to Yummy Yummy or Urban Vegan first.

Lots of tasty looking dishes on this menu. We tried the mushroom version of the nuggets for an appetizer which had such great flavor and were breaded really well. My wife had the Gluten Free mac and 'cheese', awesome noodles and 'cheese', I couldn't even tell it was vegan or GF. I had the Mothers Love, which is a PHO style dish with a lot of veggies, noodles and rice. It was a lot of food so we didn't leave hungry. I wish the nuggets would have come with some kind of sauce by default, I had to ask for some.

One of the best vegan places around! I love that they use as much organic as possible because you dont see that very often at all and its so important! Ive been here a few times and the food is always excellent and high quality. Definetly worth your buck and not skimpy. I am obsessed with the indonesian skewers! I get them every time. I have also tried one of the curries and the bibimbop and both were delicious and perfectly seasoned and cooked. All of the desserts here are amazing and there arent many places around to get fresh vegan deserts besides maybe cookies! The whole place is full of love from the ingredients to the menu to the decorations on the wall. Only complaint is we had multiple problems with a particular server there and she never really took care of our requests but another server picked up her slack and was amazing. Would definetly reccomend and Ill be coming back!

As a carnivore married to a vegetarian, his & hers dining out is not always easy. So she gets really excited when she can actually eat wonton soup, which is really hard to find vegetarian and even harder to find any good. The rainbow rolls are enormous, and the warm housemade peanut sauce they come with is some of the best I've had. I also enjoyed the Laksa which has a delicious broth and a generous portion. I'm not really into TVP (more an issue of my taste than anything they're doing wrong with it), but the other proteins they have are pretty tasty. They are not Gardein style meat doppelgangers, but they were satisfying. Service is friendly, and the atmosphere is quiet. No real beverage menu to speak of, but they keep filtered water coming and you're welcome to BYOB.

My husband Kenn and I finally got around to trying this place after knowing about it from visiting Father & Sons Barber next door, and all the positive yelp reviews. The visit did not disappoint! We arrived just after the place opened and got a seat right by the window. Service was prompt and helpful with any questions we might have. The menu is extensive. I would say it's like a giant mix of Thai, Korean and Chinese influences with lots of other things mixed in. It was hard to decide on what to order since I LOVE Thai and everything sounded good. We settled on a few things: Appetizers: vegan shrimp and fried egg rolls - Both were tasty. It was hard to believe the shrimp wasn't really shrimp! Many dishes are composed of TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein, which is a soy derivative). I'm familiar with TVP, but have never seen it white like in the shrimp. I could have eaten more than one serving of that appetizer! The egg rolls were good, but not anything that stood out as unique as these are often vegetarian anyway. Wonton Soup - This was a super tasty broth with a few broccoli florets and 3 wontons floating in it. The wontons didn't have as much flavor as I expected compared to the rest of the dish. The soup did seem like it just came off the boil because it was so hot. You seriously had to be careful eating it. Entre: Kung Pao - This mix of spicy sauce with cabbage, veggies, cashews and little fried balls of TVP was delicious! The brown rice served with it was a nice balance to the spice, though the spice wasn't overpowering to the palette. My only complaint is the dish could have had more cashews in it. I only had a couple. Part of my love for dishes like this is the crunch the added nuts provide. Kenn had the Dol Sot Bi Bim Bob and said it was really tasty. It was filled with vegetables, brown rice and TVP, served in a hot pot. I had a taste, and it was good, but I like spicier food and preferred my Kung Pao. The only thing holding this review back from a 5-star rating is that many things are stir fried, or battered and fried. This helps disguise the TVP, but limits your options if you don't want something fried. We were fine with our dishes prepared as described with fried elements since we rarely eat any fried food anyway. But, I would explore other options on the menu next time. Overall, this was a great experience that left us too full (and with leftovers) to try any of the desserts, which also sounded good. We left the restaurant with full bellies and I felt much lighter than when eating traditional Thai in non-vegan restaurants.

We've been eating at Alice & Friends, now and then, since it opened more than 10 years ago. We absolutely love the food and it continues to get better, but we mourn the décor that's changed for the worse (the missing 5th star is entirely because of the décor). When the restaurant first opened it had a cozy, eclectic feel with old mismatched furniture similar to what you might find in a non-chain coffee shop. It was a bit like Kopi's in Andersonville. During those years the place was popular with lots of customers. Then, one day, it was sold to a franchise and changed it's name to "Loving Hut." The place was redesigned to look like a sterile cafeteria, with tiled floors, white plastic tables and matching chairs. In addition, the walls were plastered with trite sayings, like "Your the best doctor for yourself if you think positively" (that one's in the bathroom). During those years the restaurant was part of cult that followed "Supreme Master Ching Hai," who according to Wikipedia -- in addition to her love of peace and veganism has had "alleged fund-raising improprieties" and some illegal construction projects. The restaurant during those years featured a continuous video loop of Ching Hai. Then, a few years ago, the place came under new ownership and reverted to the name "Alice & Friends." The décor was improved a bit, but still feels somewhat sterile and incongruous with the cuisine. Some of the weird cult quotes are still up, like "Whatever we speak will give a vibration; and accordingly, what we say, good or bad will effect upon us again." ....However, the food really is wonderful. I think the business likely struggles to draw customers because it lacks charm. Many still come because the food is so terrific. If Alice & Friends went back to it's good-old homey look, and took down most of the slogans, it would once again became a destination for everyone looking for great veggie food and a warm setting. It would also be great if they brought back their delicious "lady fingers" appetizer....a personal favorite.
