Reviews of The Grey Jay
Mieko A Ozeki
The Grey Jay is a great addition to Burlington’s breakfast/lunch scene, an expansion on the cultural cuisines offered in the area.
Started with the blood orange and sumac glazed donut, made by pastry chef Amanda Wildermuth, and a cup of Turkish coffee. The donuts are astounding, not greasy and certainly flavorful. The Turkish coffee packs a punch, sip and do not gulp as the fine grinds are intentionally part of the drink, and from coffee roaster nearby at Vivid Coffee.
For lunch, I had the chicken shawarma with a side of cucumber salad. The Lebanese mountain bread is so crispy and wrapped around flavorful pieces of chicken. I will order this dish again and look forward to trying other dishes.
The atmosphere is nice for smaller parties or going on your own. Friendly staff, who are helpful with questions about offerings on the menu.

The experience was nothing less than extraordinary. I had high expectations being the little sister of Honey Road and they didn't disappoint. Everything from the donuts, to the French toast, and even the Benedict we're all amazing.

I have been waiting to go to the Grey Jay since i heard about its conception last year. I finally got here and tried a little bit of everything. I got the spiced Turkish coffee, pistachio sticky bun, deviled eggs, and shakshuka. The sticky bun was perfectly flavored with a subtle sweetness that didnt overpower the dish. The deviled eggs were unique and delicious, and the shakshuka was tasty and spiced to perfection. However it came out of the kitchen lukewarm, which was disappointing. Overall a Very cool spot with a fun decor and unique menu.

We had a wait for around an hour for a table for 4 on Saturday at 10:15. The space itself is small but feels very fresh and new, with accents of green throughout. The food was absolutely amazing. Across the table, we tried the falafel Benedict, shakshuka (amazing balance of flavors and spices), yogurt bowl, saffron and pistachio sticky bun, and Turkish coffees, both regular and spiced. It was a hit all around! The yogurt bowl was a great sweet but healthy brunch option, served with housemade granola, grapefruit and a drizzle of honey. The sticky bun was FANTASTIC; such a good texture– almost pound-cake like– and perfectly sweet but not overly so, with a delicate and fragrant balance of saffron and pistachio. Definitely a place to stop by if you want a stellar food experience with a bit more of a twist than your typical basic brunch fare.

As fans of Honey Road, we knew we’d love The Grey Jay, and we were not disappointed. Started with a dense, yummy apple butter donut and fantastic deviled eggs. The Fried Eggplant Sabich was super flavorful and surprisingly light. My wife got the Kale salad and daughter the eggs Benedict. The Benedict is a bit over powered by falafel base. We will hurry back. Nice VT beer options.

Outstanding! Got the Turkish Breakfast along with the spiced Turkish coffee and I left a very satisfied foodie. I can’t wait to try more from the menu! Burlington has been desperately in need of elevated food, and Grey Jay is a very welcomed addition.

The Grey Jay induces an invigorating nostalgic feeling in a small, personable, imaginative and immaculate space. Brunch! The menu is so enticing I could have closed my eyes and picked. We were happy as can be with the shakshuka and maneoushe along with the egg soufflé & cheese, the falafel benedict, kale and apple salad, crispy potatoes AND the deviled eggs. Looking forward to my next brunch at The Grey Jay in Burlington!

Food is incredible, as expected! Definitely worth a brunch visit if you're comfortable with a very cozy dining experience (it feels like there should be just one less table). When we happened to be there the music was too loud for a casual, conversational voice with someone across the table, but I don't imagine this is a usual thing.

Been anxiously awaiting the opening of Grey Jay since the first teasers. After having been, I'm really glad we have a spot like this following the closure of Pennycluse. I was concerned the price would be too high, given Honey Road, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the menu fairly priced. However, unfortunately, for as beautiful as the plates looked, certain items were (for lack of a better term), somewhat flavorless/bland (specifically the Benedict, which also had a slightly gluey texture). The baked goods were of course unbelievably delicious and packed full of flavor, and the drinks were awesome too. I'm looking forward to seeing this spot grow and mature, and iron out the "just opened" kinks. I'm confident I'll bump this to 5 stars within a few weeks.

Phenomenal food, a bit of a wait on Sunday morning. Started with a blueberry black currant jelly filled donut, halloumi biscuits and they were yummy. Eggs Benny over falafel and thawing French toast as mains rounded out the meal well. Great sister restaurant to honey road can’t wait to come back!

The best French toast and Turkish coffee I have ever had. And excellent service and ambience.

Delicious chicken shawarma wrap for lunch ! We also enjoyed the lamb shish as a starter. The blueberry jelly donut was the perfect match with coffee after our lunch. We will be back soon. Oh, and very friendly and efficient service!

Magical. The tahini French toast may be the best thing over ever put in my mouth. The Sabich had amba, which is pretty hard to find outside of the Middle East and was so good. The coffee is dark and delicious, service excellent. I’m so happy we have this gem in little old Burlington!

Great place for brunch, so many vegetarian options.

We were recent guests at The Grey Jay for breakfast. To start our party split several inventive small snacks and pastries. The Apple Butter Donut was properly dense, just sugary enough, and packed with spicy, old fashioned flavor. The Passionfruit and Olive Oil Donut was like nothing I've ever tasted, comforting and exotic at the same time, fruity without being cloying. Biscuits with Harissa butter were a perfect, flaky blend of savory and sweet. As for our meals, the Shakshuka was rich, a hearty bowl with eggs cooked perfectly, topped with heavenly fresh baked bread. Two of us chose the Falafel Eggs Benedict, because...Falafel Eggs Benedict. Another hit. We both said the Hollandaise was the best we've had anywhere. We'll go again. We'll tell our friends. Oh, and I shouldn't leave out: ambiance-wise, the space is well designed- thoughtful and welcoming right down to the silverware.

Generally a great place with a unique, Turkish-influenced menu. They keep things focused so they can excel at the relatively limited menu they have (ie no dinner menu), and there are enough flavours and varieties for everyone's satisfaction. Prices are also - by today's astronomical price context - acceptable. Service is friendly, knowledgeable. They know what they do and do it well.
My main complaint, which made our experience less than pleasant, was the noise level during peak lunch hour. It surpasses even the deafening experience that used to be Penny Cluse. I am not overly sensitive, but a bit detailed - I measured the noise level while there, and it never got below 105 and often hit 113, which is the equivalent of a chain saw operating at 3 feet. For 45 mintues. Not quite jet airliner status, but none too relaxing. It's simply the accoustics of the place. However, nothing that Turkish-themed fabric on the walls and/or ceiling couldn't fix to absorb and not reflect sound waves.
Also, all the eggs on the menu are of the poached variety, and again, they do them better than anyone, but some kind of omelet style would also be appreciated. Their falafel are easily the best in town - not deeply fried, moist, flavourful.

A bit noisy once full but awesome food and service.

It was great to see more Turkish food in Burlington. I had simit toast. As a Turkish, I would say it wasn’t a simit, but the way that they served was great. It will be definitely my favourite places. I wish they could have a Turkish tea option too. It would be great!

I went to the Jay Gray restaurant grand opening, it was an extraordinary experience the drink and the food were exceptional. The staff and the owners were professional courteous and made me feel very comfortable going there. I wish them well they're going to be extraordinary to our community. David Call Burlington Vermont

The menu feels geared more towards dinner than brunch. But the food is very good.

Overall amazing, and the shakshuka was the best I've ever had! Highly recommend!

The food was delicious but the space was cramped and quite tight for the number of people in the restaurant.

I'd definitely recommend ordering off the snacks & pastries section! We ordered the deviled eggs, halloumi biscuits (BIG BIG hit), potatoes, doughnuts, etc. And they were all phenomenal. We also ordered off the normal menu (egg zoug sandwich I think) and wasn't super impressed, but everything else was so good.
The coffee wasn't great, it was very very acidic which none of us were crazy about. The chairs are also small, so if you have hips they can be very uncomfortable. The food is totally worth it though!
We ordered doughnuts to go the next day too! Definitely recommend.

Had the best fried chicken and biscuit of my life for lunch- it was a special- should be added to the permanent menu! Shawarma was also good. Service took quite awhile to get food and tab for lunch.

This new sister property to Honey Road is fantastic. The menu is full of really cool takes on familiar dishes, and set up so you can do some of the same mezze-style plate sharing that Honey Road is famous for. Seating is limited and first-come, first-served so especially on weekends plan to do some Church Street wandering after you put your name in.

This delightful breakfast place was everything I expected from the people behind honey road. The brunch was delicious as a one off at honey road, and has kept the same high standards as a stand alone restaurant in its own right. Service, food and drinks all top notch.
