Reviews of The Great Northern
A very fun place for an outdoor drink with loved ones. The Great Northern provides a relaxing environment that is wheelchair accessible and provides accessible parking spots. The indoor space is also wheelchair accessible as are the bathrooms. You do have to go inside to order any drinks or food which threw me for a surprise. Overall a really great environment. If there aren’t parking spots in front then there are spots on the side.
Wonderful place to relax with family and friends with a variety of beers and beverages from Zero Gravity. This place offers anlit of vegetarian dishes like Katsu Cauliflower wings, Burgers, Ban Mi,etc. Loved the ambience.
Pretty expensive, but worth it. The dirty fries are awesome. The katsu cauliflower is awesome. The hot dogs were exceptional. The grilled cheese didn't impress my toddler, but my husband loved it. She ate most of the picked cabbage.
Waffles and coffles are a great treat.
A little slow but worth the wait. Creative takes on classics and som California inspired originals. Excellent beer as they are connected to the Zero Gravity Brewery.
Casual yet upscale brewery vibes. Spectacular unique food options and great service! #BlazeOn
Had a great dinner and several drinks with friends. Like everyone, they seem short-staffed so you have to go up front and order which can be good or bad, I suppose—but that’s the main reason I only gave 4 stars. They also ran out of margaritas, which was disappointing, but the food was really good, if a little pricey. Loved the dirty fries and the fried cheese curds! Nice that they have vegan options too. Would definitely return!
While I preferred when the restaurant was separate from the beer hall, given the sparse landscape of good restaurants in the area, this place remains a cut above most local restaurants. The food is B+ or higher, the space itself is A+ with a lovely fireplace, seating, and decorations, and the service is generally an A. Also the prices are reasonable and the portions are fair to generous. The food comes out quickly, and the heated outdoor seating is great when it's cold, but not too cold outside.
I absolutely adore the interior. Very retro, hip and classy. I love that you can order a drink at the bar , get it within SECONDS, and then go sit wherever you please. Whether that is on a cozy leather sofa by a fireplace , at a bar, or a personal table with ambient lighting .... It's a setting I will definitely be returning for. The food was absolutely delicious 10/10 . I just feel like the cocktail menu needs a little more love. I asked for salt with my marg and felt snubbed when they said no. I like my margs with salt. How hard is that to put a Lil salt on the rim ??? Plus the cocktail menu is SHORT . and the drinks are very pricey for how tiny they are. I think they can do just a lil better in that regard. . .
The shaved kale salad is great. The crispy chicken sandwich is delicious! It’s a thigh, so don’t get it if you only like white meat. But, if you’re a dark meat fan, definitely go for it!
Casual Lunch, You Place Order at the Bar and they Deliver to Your Table. Large Grain Bowl with Tofu was Huge. Burger & Fries Hit the Spot.
The clams, trout, and pickled veggies were delicious. The trout came on a bed of fancy mushrooms, onions, and squash. Gin and tonic and old fashioned were strong and balanced. Atmosphere was a bit noisy but laid back. Service was excellent.
I am seriously impressed with this place! Everyone in my party was very happy with their meal. Food was delicious and attractively presented. Even the coffee was very good and we are picky coffee drinkers. Definitely this will be a new local favorite!
Awesome spot - the menu is eclectic, the food is delicious, great beer selection, and it's not overly crowded so you can actually get a table.
Sunday brunch, no wait. Covered patio. Curried smoked pork hash was excellent. Fresh pickled veggie side. Surrounded by breweries, pizza and other restaurants.
A group of friends and I got to check out this new restaurant that had only been open for about a week, at the time of this review. Great atmosphere and interior design, really transformed the space from the previous South End Kitchen. Service was really good and attentive. Food was delicious. Images in this review were:
Dirty French Fries: Smoked Pork, Gochujang Aioli, and Spicy Pickles. This is def. a great share plate. Could have used a bit more gochujang. The spicy pickles was a nice pairing.
Salmon Tartar with Ikura and Miso: I asked for this dish without the ikura as I am not a fan of roe. Salmon tasted great. There is also a Tuna Poke on the menu. Hoping they add Salmon Poke to the menu.
Roasted Maine Cod: Cod was silky and flaky, which is what you want.
Will definitely be coming back here.
Wow! A friend invites me here for breakfast. A kickass breakfast sandwich in a real nice dining environment. I knew the previous place that was here. What they did with the transplanted bar in this place is worth the visit alone. Would love to know the history of the bar!
Food is great so many options and the sour beer is awsome. Sometimes its a bit of a wait but it's worth it.
Beautiful dog-friendly outdoor patio with great food and beer. Came with our baby and dog after a hike for dinner - perfect.
Nice atmosphere, friendly service, creative menu with healthy options and a good drink list.
My daughter and I shared the steak and scallops plate and it was excellent! The steak was cooked perfectly, and the scallops were tender and flavorful.
A local friend took us and there were no tables available. The hostess kindly created a Dining spot for us in the waiting area which we thought was more desirable and comfortable than the dining tables. The food was excellent and I would make a special trip to go again. We shared everything so tried a lot. Don’t miss: Grilled octopus , crispy chicken with forbidden rice, dirty fries. Staff beyond friendly and accommodating.
I was excited to try this place for the first time, but I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed. The food was good, but priced like it was great.
Good service and good food. A bit pricey and kinda small portions.
I had to write this review as I am eating the BEST chicken sandwich I’ve ever had.
The food was yummy (despite it being quite a different menu from what we found online) and terrace was cute (despite the fact that we expected a cool indoor bar/restaurant). Hybrid of dine-in and take-out instead of table service at this hybrid of The Great Northern and the brewery next door.
Guys. Get the dripping roast beef sandwich. You're welcome. Oh, and extra napkins.
Nice little place on very busy Pine Street in Burlington. Great treats with special donuts as they are known for. Great burgers, salads, chicken sandwich, several brunch items with eggs Benedict among them. Fresh oysters and other fresh fish cold bar. Really nice open space, big field place and classic old style long bar to eat or drink at. Always friendly staff and orders to go.
The food was delicious
Such an awesome find on the South end! We stumbled on this spot a few months ago and have come back several times for brunch. The cocktail menu is fantastic and the food is exceptional. Our server was so sweet and genuine, the experience was perfect across the board!
Scallop ceviche was the best I have ever had!! Right next door to zero gravity as well 👍. …
Three of us had dinner with fresh local foods and a variety of dishes and portions. I especially liked the fried lake perch, tofu in a tangy sauce over rice, and a side of fermented veggies. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly, and the craftsman decor creates a rich atmosphere. Can't wait to try the lunch menu.
I had a nice experience. A little pricey with a small menu. Ruben was amazing.
Always a great experience! The management and the staff are incredibly accommodating. The food is perfect and the presentation is always pleasing. My favorite is the scallops appetizer and the crispy chicken and rice. Or the tofu bowl...ohhhh man. Yummy!
Standard hipster brewery, pre-made cocktails and canned beers, menu where all 8 menu items have a "twist" (it's coleslaw and chickpeas and pickled onions) and a few trendy oddball items like quinoa salad. It's dressed up fast casual for $15 an item
This is one of my favorite dining spots in the Burlington area. The atmosphere is very nice and cozy, though it is a rather large space. The entree options are a bit scarce, but the crispy chicken entree is one the best things i've eaten in a long time. The dirty fries are very good as well, though it would be nice if the pork was pulled, as opposed to just chopped up in to cubes and thrown in (fat and all). I think the prices are fair, and the portions sizes are good.
Overall, this place is definitely worth a try!
On the first visit, we were greeted with courteous and fast service. Great ambiance and decor. Large selection of local beers and local foods. Loved their homemade fermented veggies! Open-concept kitchen, what's not to love?
Great modern American restaurant next to one of Burlington's more popular breweries. It's no surprise then that they have fantastic -- and varied -- beer selection that highlights local favorites and international beers. (But if you're not drinking they also have great coffee as well.)
Service was very proper and attentive as well. Their menu rotates by the season and has a great variety with an emphasis on new twists on Italian-American. Their polenta was great when I visited. They best mainstay on their menu is their dressed up fries. Imagine a messy montage of pickled veggies, fresh crema and pork belly. It's a must have!
The Great Northern is a very good restaurant with a small menu comprised of fresh, locally available foods. When we visited, I had an asparagus soup that was delicious along with a nice entree.
For those who enjoy a beer with their meals, The Great Northern had a number of good beer options to accompany the food. In fact, we passed on the nearly-exclusively IPA and sour draft list at the neighboring brewery tasting room and went straight to the Great Northern and were pleasantly surprised at the options.
First time. Was waiting on something else just wanted a cup of coffee and a spot to chill. Tried here, they were welcoming, genuine and served me my cup of coffee with water and a refill. I'm not sure they're really set up for a coffee shop type thing but that didn't matter to those running the floor, very refreshing and I'll be back to order more and see what this place is about. Give it a try if you haven't... Not sure about food, but I bet it's good!
My husband and I went out to celebrate my 14yrs anniversary at The Great North restaurant on Pine st, Burlington VT.
I had ordered a chicken and scallops. My husband ordered the red snap fish!
OMG! The food was fresh and delicious!
The service was great.
I'm strongly to recommend to this Restaurant 😋
It was awesome. We reserved a table for 7:45 but it wasn't ready so they sat us down in the lounge, we ordered drinks, and they gave us apps on the house. The food was awesome- I ordered the pasta bolognaise and that was great.
Now Zero Gravity. GREAT staff & beer. Stop in soon!!
Good food, drinks, & atmosphere. Open fireplace in dining area. 🔥 …
We got the chicken sandwich and reuben. Great service too, which you don't necessarily expect at lunchtime. Pricy but comes with a plate full of delicious food, where some places you could pay a few dollars less and not come close to the combination of quality and quantity here. Also always appreciate the half fry half salad side option. Looking forward to trying an after work drink and side of dirty fries.
LOVE. Closest piece of Cali I can find here in Vermont... food is BOMB. Dirty fries, I love you. Also anything seafood I’ve had here has blown my socks off. Definitely a pricey dinner date option but priced appropriately for the quality the chef is putting out. Always great service here too!
Nice atmosphere, great staff. I have visited several times and have consistently had good food and service. They have a good raw bar, an interesting menu with small and large plate offerings, and a great beverage selection including the best espresso in town.
Very nearly perfect. Presentation was beautiful, wait staff was friendly and fairly quick, and the food was unique and delicious. It was a little too salty, and the lighting could be improved. But other than that, it's a nice, classy way too enjoy comfort foods with novel, delicious additions.
Fantastic new restaurant!! We sat at their beautiful bar and enjoyed a few of the house cocktails ("Run Through the Jungle" is so good!!) as well as the grilled octopus and a burger and fries. Hard to choose though because every menu item sounded appealing!
Had the steak, dirty fries, and meatballs. Steak and the meatballs were fine but forgettable. Meatballs were dry despite being covered in sauce. The steak was also covered in a sauce/broth, which just didn't work for me or my partner. The dirty fries were great, as was the sweet potato with the steak. Probably won't go back unless I'm at the brewery, and even then, probably won't be back.
Hearty with an adventurous twist. Lots of well behaved kids at early seating and an awesome place to go on a date because it’s interesting - both menu and atmosphere. Great space - not too big or too small. New tastes with many local ingredients, i.e. early spring nettle miso soup - Great fries! Fun and fair prices.
Hostess and waitress were positive and friendly. We shared the fish fry (perch) special, creamy polenta, and dirty fries. Everything was mouth watering and delicious. I had a Run in the jungle cocktail which was also a hit. This is a really special place.
Visiting from NY we talked to the brewers from Zero Gravity and they recommended we go to The Great Northern for food and drinks.
We loved it. It was two of us so we sat at the bar but it was cool. The drinks were good. The food was amazing. The entertainment and environment was right on. Friendly staff and surprisingly low prices. Will be back.
Excellent choice for a seafood dinner, a vegetarian meal or a meat dish for that matter. The raw seafood bar has a nicely crafted selection of shrimp, ceviche, clams, shrimp, fish and oysters amongst others. They also have a very nice drink selections with many bourbons to pick from.
Best trout I've ever had. My husband got the fish fry and was super happy with his meal as well. The Ambiance is warm and cozy while still being modern. Definitely our new go to!
A must-visit in Burlington!
A great, open space, with a huge bar to sit at, or a raw bar to pull up to and watch the kitchen hum.
We stopped in on a Friday night because it was close (and beside Zero Gravity), and were blown away.
The wait was short for two seats at the raw bar. We pulled up and got to watch the chef serve up seafood and salads all night.
Great selection of East Coast seafood. We a taster of oysters and the tuna poké to start, but the mushroom polenta was the real star of the night. The creamiest and most delicious polenta, topped with incredible supple roast mushrooms, a poached egg in the middle, and the most flavourful mushroom broth to top it all off. We seriously battled over who got to scrape the last of the broth out of the dish.
We also had the chickpea fritters (great for sharing), and finished off with a great piece of sour cherry pie and ice cream.
Best restaurant in Burlington.
The beer list is next-level. I expect good beer when I cross into Vermont, but this is well curated, with up-coming legs listed as well. A good selection of mostly European bottles to complement the local heavy tap list. A really solid cocktail menu as well.
Service was quick, friendly, and the chef even made sure we had enjoyed everything and asked us if we had any favourites.
Can't wait to come back!
Food was delicious, as were the beverages. A bit spendy for what we got. 75$ for 2 burgers (no fries, only a couple of pickle slices), a salad to share, and 2 drinks. Parking in the lot was challenging (impossible), despite the restaurant being mostly empty. Luckily there was still space on the adjacent street. Our service was excellent.
The new outdoor seating is perfect for Vermont. Heaters will keep you warm but you still get fresh air! Menu is great and Zero Gravity beer is always great
Beautiful atmosphere ! The fried squash blossoms, oysters with a rhubarb sauce and dirty french fries were delicious!!! The pricing and serving size of the roasted Maine cod was disappointing, to many different styles going into 1 dish. My dinner dates enjoyed their dishes.
Unique and delectable dishes, super friendly and attentive staff and the interior is gorgeous! Whether you’re visiting or you’re a local this place is a must! The polenta is dangerously good, the tuna poke and oysters are fresh, and the dinner is one you won’t forget.
I’ve eaten here several times. Limited breakfast but very good and the coffee can’t be beat. Lunch and dinner is always fresh and well prepared. Waitstaff are efficient and very welcoming. No pretension here, casual atmosphere and I like it.
Just the best spot for food in Burlington. Laid back atmosphere within a well-curated restaurant. The food is of the highest caliber: delicious, fresh, local ingredients mixed with perfect preparation. A divine culinary experience and simultaneously laid back. Could not be better.
It was really good. I had the rice bowl with chicken...yummy fried tofu‼Sat outside and relaxed with family. Well behaved dogs on leashes are allowed. I would highly recommend
My husband and I stumbled across this place and so glad we did. Our server was so attentive and polite. The food is fresh and local. My dish, eggs benedict with a scallop cake was unbelievable! The eggs were perfectly poached and the holladaise sauce--such a great flavor. My husband's burger, he said, was wonderful...beef from LaPlatte farm. Dessert was an almond cake with creme freche cream, berries in a brandy sauce and ice cream, shared with hubby, finished with a beautiful crafted cappuccino. Highly recommend. My new favorite place!
Great bar. Great restaurant. This is an off menu Fish House Punch!
The best lunch spot on pine street and one of the best in Chittenden county period. Beautiful vintage bar, great staff, tasty food and drink options, and a real fireplace to keep it cozy during the winter. I can't get enough of The Great Northern and this is now a weekly stop in for me.
Love this place! I find it difficult to find consistently delicious restaurants. I have NEVER been disappointed with Great Northern. They have such good fun food! Definitely my go-to place.
Varied menu and very tasty. One gripe (experienced both times I have gone, with different waiters) is that they take your plate away as soon as you are done and seem to be rushing you in general.
One of my new favorite places to go in Burlington. Tremendous food, great staff, and really amazing space (check out the woodwork on the bar). I highly recommend the crispy chicken sandwich for lunch!
This was the best food experience we have had on our trip to Vermont. Delicious food, great drinks and outstanding service.
We are considering to revisit The Great Nothern for dinner before returning.
Walked in and managed to get a table on what looked to be a busy Tuesday evening. The food was delicious...as was their cava! The staff were welcoming and friendly and the food didn’t take long to come out at all, given there were so many tables to tend to.
Weird rules - have to order food/drinks at the bar for the outside tables but waiters bring the orders out. Inefficient at best. Also a bit pricey, considering. I guess they spent a lot on the décor. Definitely a hipster hangout.
I've been here once for lunch and at least five times after dark. The food has been creative, delicious, and most importantly, consistent. It has a good staff, an attractive inside. What could I say...
Service was good. The dirty fries were really tasty - kind of exotic. The Reuben was pretty tasty but I thought kind of skimpy on meat.
Was in town for the Lake Champlain Factory store that is next door to this, and came here for lunch. Quality in-house brew and lunch, not too expensive either.
The Reuben was quite superb! Fries were deliciousness all their own, perfectly crispy and seasoned. Would recommend for a lunch.
Mediocre and overpriced food, sandwiches underseasoned, and fries too salty. Admittedly, the drinks are probably the focus here but maybe consider eating beforehand.
Nice new dining and social experience.
Tasty food and plenty of adult beverage options. Outdoor seating is great on nice days. The service here was prompt and professional.
Great decor, knowledgable staff, and delightful food. I'll be coming back to dine for dinner in the near future, as their brunch was divine.
Best service, food, atmosphere around. Super clean. Can't say enough! Menu is very well thought out. Delish!
We were here for an apple pie baking challenge. They were closed for normal business but the event was fun, the staff was friendly, the food and drink they had was very good and we'll be going back for real soon!
Beautiful restaurant and staffed well. Food is high quality and presented with flair. The seafood stew is outstanding.
They have an awesome beer selection and make great cocktails. Their oysters are on point as well! Great experience!
Like the atmosphere. Food was good and staff was friendly and helpful! Want to try their brunch.
We visit VT once a year from NYC and The Great Northern is where we dine! Excellent local restaurant with great tasting inovative dishes.
I'm not easily impressed with any type of restaurant but this one was Very Good which probably translates into Outstanding from all of my peers and friends.
Love this place. Great service period. Menu changes often and it's always a treat to eat a nice dinner here.
Hipster atmosphere. Basic, but fancy food, prices reflect the fancy. Short menu. Food was good
I had octopus, hen of the wood mushroom, ceviche, and all were outstanding. Good drinks too!
Good lunch and great beer. I had the chicken sandwich and it was very good.
Between food quality/consistency, cocktails, and staff ... it could easily be argued that this is the best restaurant in Burlington.
Amazing food and great service. One of the best restaurants in the area. Highly recommended.
Awesome menu & great staff
Pretty good. Kinda got this early 1900s posh to it. The foods pretty good too! The menu is fairly unique.
Way overpriced for what you get, yes it’s healthy hipster food but still not worth the $80 bill for dinner. Won’t be back.
Really amazing flavor combinations in the lunch menu. Great cocktails, oh, and two words, "raw bar."
Delicious food! Nice decor. Great brewery next door.
Nice decor, excellent service, tasty food (though the octopus was overcooked). Definitely recommend!!
Staff is wonderful, food is excellent. Everyone who works there is an expert in what they do. Love this place
Lunch was delicious and the decor is so cozy and comfortable. I can definitely recommend.
Great environment & amazing food, Wow!
Great food. I love the idea that you can get side half salad and half fries
Amazing food, great vibe. Right next to Zero Gravity, and across the street from Queen City - perfect!
A bit pricey but very high quality food and a great atmosphere. Good for a special occasion.
Amazing food and awesome service. Great job guys, I am really glad to spend my money on you.
Very good food... can be a little too salty sometimes. Excellent service.
Great service, good food, solid options for vegetarians....oh and good beer!
Good food, didn't fall off our feet. Great service though
Great menu, fresh from the farm food and friendly atmosphere
Cozy and warm. Well maintained wood fireplace. Excellent food.
Amazing breakfast on the patio. Homemade granola was fantastic and friendly staff.
Great atmosphere. Good service. Mediocre food. Overall, not worth the price.
Screaming fast service, attention to detail, amazing food, couldn't recommend more highly! Get here as fast as you can!
Really good! Great service, well located, and very tasty food!
Great cocktails. Great oysters. Mediocre main dishes
Great drinks and food. One of Burlington's best IMO
Great food, great cocktails, great atmosphere. Love Great Northern!
Delicious food, attentive service, delightful ambience. Reasonably priced.
Excellent choice for beer, food and wine...plus the twin peaks connection!!
Mushroom bowl is beyond belief. 5 stars
Excellent food, service, ambience...we' ll be back. Outstanding!
Noisy bad music
Fantastic food and service highly recommend this restaurant!
During this time of covid, it's a nice place for an outdoor meal.
Just a cool vibe with exceptional food flavor that will bend your mind!!

Great food, ambience and service. Highly recommend coming here.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere, super friendly.
Good service, interesting menu, will visit again.
Amazing flavor profiles and taste-gasm experience! Definitely going back.
A dozen oysters and a homemade ginger beer restored my soul.
Very accommodating staff and the pasta bolognese was great
