Reviews of Sushi Maeda
Justin M
The sushi and service were spectacular. Fish selection was great. Every single bite I had from the Special Sushi Sampler was different and packed with great flavors. The portion sizes of the fish were a little too generous compared to the rice but in the end it was a great bonus. It showed off the freshness and quality of the cuts they use. The service staff were very attentive the moment we walked through the doors and worked very hard to deliver a great meal service.

There was a small issue with their ticketing system when we placed our order, and thus we had a delay -- but it wasn't a big deal, as I was enjoying some Japanese whiskey and catching up with a friend.
Our food was amazing. Definitely some of the best sushi I've had in VT and I've been to almost all sushi places in the area. Service was good too. It's a little on the pricey side but as they say: you get what you pay for
Overall, was impressed and will definitely be back 🍣🍢🍤🥡

We have waited for this restaurant to open for awhile and finally got to enjoy a meal here with our family including 3 adults and 1 child. The space is big and the service was good overall (attentive and timely).
We started with hijiki salad, seaweed salad, and venison gyoza. All were fresh and tasted as expected for these dishes. We liked how the sushi, sashimi, and chirashi dishes were simple and not overly complicated with too many ingredients. The rice was well seasoned (essential for these dishes) and fresh ingredients. The prices are good and the atmosphere is nice for meeting with a small party. Drink menu is extensive.
We are glad to have another Japanese food option in the Queen City.

We just had our dinner there tonight and couldn’t wait for giving a five-star rating. We ordered the dumplings for appetizer and it is amazing. The ingredients of the dumplings created a great flavor which we both like it. We both order chilashi as our main dish. The rice is the classic cold sushi rice ina good quality, at least not sticky at all. The top sashimi are a purple of different fishes. The quality of the fish meat is good. The middle one is amazing which the skin is slaty. It’s good to eat with the rice.

Recently opened location (less than a year)
I definitely think there were some highlights and some lowlights.
Highlights were definitely the wait/bar staff. Shae (sp?) and Shane were amazing bartenders - very talkative and engaging, loved their service and just very nice people.
Food wise - I think my miso soup was fantastic, the seaweed salad was okay. I got the chef sushi plate and that was kind of disappointing. Just very standard for the price. The volcano roll was also good - but again I think I missed out on like a crazy punch of flavor or something interestingly done with the sushi.
The food was good - just not great and the prices were definitely more on the greater side.
The space itself is nice and big - though underutilized. I believe they just started a robatayaki grill which looked cool but was too busy to sit at.
A lot of potential - I just don't think they are "there" yet.

The sushi was top-notch, probably the most interesting and diverse Japanese menu I've seen in VT. That isn't to say the place isn't without its quirks, but they are all small and manageable.
I honestly felt bad for the staff. They were very understaffed and overworked, and wanted to seat more people, but didn't have the tables or staff. The restaurant is HUGE, but they only use 15% of the space because they don't have enough staff, making the dining experience feel a little awkward and desolate.
I would return, but I would highly encourage taking the paper off the windows so people know the place exists, turning up the heat, having brighter lights outside so signage can be seen, and I hope they are able to find more staff to fill the wonderfully designed modern restaurant. Lots to work on, but a great start.

We were curious to try Sushi Maeda as we have walked past and looked in but each time we have been there seemed to be a long wait of 30+ minutes. Finally we went around 5:00 pm and were able to get a seat. We eat largely plant based and wanted to try the vegetable sushi. We ordered green tea to start which was excellent (and we have green often). We also got Daikon Dengaku which was a soft and warm almost potato like consistency with an incredible sweet and gooey miso sauce on top that was like nothing we have ever eaten before but was incredible. We also ordered three different vegetable sushis: Shitake, Kanpyo (white gourd), and Shiba Zuke Shiso (pickle mixture). I was pleasantly surprised by the individual quality of each piece of sushi. One slight critique was how small they were (felt just less an inch in diameter) and there were only 6 of each kind. I realize many probably go to get an entree which would have more food but we just wanted sushi. All in all the quality was excellent and the restaurant has a sort of upscale vibe with restrained staff. Personally I will be getting sushi from other sources going forward just because I tend to want larger portions but this is a great spot to try if you are craving great authentic Japanese style sushi.

Great place to eat. If you are a fan of Bento oh then you will love this place. It's same owners and staff as Bento they are just doing it bigger and better now.

Almost as fresh as the Tsukiji fish market. Best sushi and sashimi we have had outside of Japan. Thank you very much for a delightful meal, we will be back for more.

We had an amazing time! Everything was delicious from our cocktails to our main course. We sat at the bar and had amazing conversation with the bartender, who told us all about how fresh the fish is. They really seem to be doing sushi right! Plus they change things up each month, so it gives me a great reason to keep going back!

My favorite place to get sushi in Burlington! Extremely fresh fish at a reasonable price. I’d eat here everyday if I could.
Love the staff here!

Wow!! Don’t miss this gem!! What an amazing dinner at Sushi Maeda!!! My wife and I started with broiled salmon collar (kama), which was delicious, and then had the Special Sushi Sampler…Out of this world!! Don’t miss this amazing selection of nigiri. This is some of the best sushi we’ve ever eaten. Fantastic sushi rice and super fresh fish!! Would compare it to some of the best we’ve had in Japan. Also, Reiko was an amazing waitress and we had the best time talking with her! She was so friendly and welcoming. Can’t wait to come back!

Been looking forward to this place opening for a long time and finally got a chance to stop by 💜 my date and i ordered basically enough sushi entrees to feed 5 mouths because we were so excited! Forgot to photograph the half avo and all our sashimi and veggies sides and regular nigiri enteees, but i got this perfectly paired plate of sauces and nigiri😍😍😍 its called the special sushi assortment and the fish pairing to veggies, herbs, and sauces are to die for! Every bite is a total flavor change so be sure to eat ginger inbetween or wash down with the sake 😋 cant wait to come back soon also pictured is some uni sushi🧡

I have eaten here a few times now, both for takeout and for a sit down dinner.
The staff are friendly and helpful, and the food is delightful.
This is the best quality sushi in Burlington that I have found. The pricing is also very reasonable for what you get.
I've had a variety of the maki, as well as the chirashi (sashimi over rice) and a few appetizers. The fish had always been extremely fresh and well prepared. The sushi rice is a perfect compliment to the fish without being overpowering.
The ambiance is a little strange due to the large space and I believe a lack of staffing/demand, but don't be dissuaded if it seems empty.
This is now one of my favorite (if not my favorite) food in Burlington at the moment.

We are over the moon to see Sushi Maeda come to life! This has been in the works for quite a while and is such a well deserved dream for an incredible family and team. We have been loyal customers of Bento over the years and have enjoyed watching them grow. We are deeply rooted in the hospitality community and therefore very particular about food. Pre Covid We used to drive to Boston or Portland regularly to get our sushi/japanese fix…
While we still love our faves in those places, we are delighted to finally have something so great here in our little city of Burlington. Sushi Maeda does not disappoint. Please give them a try and be patient while they work out any kinks (*IF* they have them!). They are worth the wait. This is the place Burlington has been waiting for.

Was hoping for something special, but can't say I found it.
Space is huge and spare with less than 1/4 containing tables. No big deal, but odd.
Miso soup: for me it wasn't hot enough, (temperature.) My wife thought it was OK.
Seaweed and burdock salads: very tasty but pretty standard fare.
Sushi: Rice is KEY to sushi, and in this case it felt like some unfortunate necessity. I ordered the chef's-choice assortment. The fish was huge relative to rice. I didn't take photos, but you can see it in other's. Some might appreciate this - they should order sashimi. The bites were too big and not balanced. Hard to tell for sure, because fish was so dominant, but I thought rice could have been seasoned more.
Owners of this place had Sansai restaurant years back where they offered really excellent and uncommon sushi - hamachi with plum paste and mint for instance - really good. Was hoping something like this would appear in my assortment. It didn't. Fish all tasted fresh. Nothing was terrible but nothing was great. Best piece was mackerel.
Wife enjoyed pork and tofu dish a lot.
Waitress was nice.
I hope it gets better, but not holding my breath.
John Russel: complaining that they have a white/American sushi chef is racist and shallow.
Joe Pekol
Very excellent sushi and japanese salads. Excellent atmosphere...lovely painting decor and OG Iron Chef playing on loop behind the bar.
Mark Stein
This place has amazing sushi in the classic japanese style. I've been an enthusiastic consumer for decades now, and enjoyed some of the best in New York, Tokyo and Seoul, and this place totally stacks up. It's a gorgeous space, and they're slowly adding items to then menu. The service is at a relaxed pace, so not a good option for a quick bite, but the service itself is excellent. Very friendly, upbeat, polite and knowledgeable.
Dana Steinhoff
Above and beyond the best sushi in Vermont. All of the fish is amazingly fresh and everything is prepared authentically. I loved this place as Bento but now love all of the additional offerings on the menu. The only bad part about this place is that it will ruin you for other sushi :)
Daniel Scheidt
Best sushi in Burlington! I've tried a few other places and I thought that they were good, until I tried this place. Wow! Sushi here is so much more flavorful and tender than other places. I didn't realize there could be such a difference but the quality of fish here is superior to anything I've had in Burlington/South Burlington. It's a few dollars per entrée more than nearby places. They were training some new waitstaff when I dined here, so hopefully will be well staffed in the future.
Gavin Wageman
Seriously phenomenal food and service. Everything here is FRESH and you can taste it! Some of the best Asian fusion around. Well fused with Asia flavors with just a HINT of Japan. I was so excited that I ALMOST forgot to scrape the bamboo strands off of my chopsticks! Ask for the Japan roll! As soon as I dipped my Japan roll into my soy sauce that was mixed together with wasabi (made from scratch by the way!) I was in heaven. Amazing! You will not regret checking this place out!
FYI: You'll have to bring your own ketchup though.
I put my recipe for Sushi Mac and Cheese on a bar napkin and gave it to the assistant manager! Fingers crossed!!!
Aaron Flenser
The quality of the food is excellent. The staff are great as well. The problem is that management is allowing too many tables to be sat for the number of employees. This will result in extended wait times.
Allison V.
My favorite. Been here since the San Sai days, hope they bring back the sushi pizza soon. Glad to see they still have the volcano roll!
Al Green
I absolutely loved Maeda when they first opened but I have to say my most recent meal was not good. And embarrassing, as I raved about the food but presented lifeless apps, sushi, and entrees to my pals
John Hanou
The restaurant looks so sterile and big. No ambiance in the place. There was no sushi bar just chairs facing an unattractive wall.
Lauren Rath
Absolutely amazing experience at Sushi Maeda! The wait was long, but deciding to wait was the BEST decision. The sake was delicious, the nigiri was on par with the best I’ve had in the states and as good as some places I’ve eaten in, in Japan. I would highly recommend the “special sushi sampler”. The “tuna on tuna” (maguro on toro) piece was mind blowing - one of the best pieces I’ve ever had. Our waitress, Reiko, was such a breath of fresh air! She was so engaging and knowledgeable. This is a can’t miss spot when visiting Burlington.
Maria Sideleva
Hands down, best sushi in Vermont. I recommend the sashimi bowl or the special of the day (nice to try new items) My whole family loves to eat here and appreciate that it’s family owned. You won’t regret coming here!
Maho Takahashi
Fresh fish, beautiful artisan work (Special Sushi Sampler recommended!) & nice customer service. Their authenticity brings me back to Japan. Grateful this quality sushi is available in VT!
Abigail Harkins
Having been spoiled with quality sushi from my time living in New York and North Carolina I quickly realized after relocating to Vermont in 2018 that the sushi in the Burlington area was less than subpar. My friends, that is no longer the case! Sushi Maeda is sushi in its finest form. Its awesome. Incredibly fresh, reasonably priced and the menu doesn’t get caught up in deep fried rolls and sweet sauces. We had the sashimi entree (totally worth it) the scallop roll and the hamachi jalepeno roll. We cannot wait to go back to try more and see what specials the chef has on the menu. The services was also great.
Simon Li
Hands down the best sushi in the entirety of Vermont! The sushi is fresh and tasty and that's impressive considering were in Vermont! Being Asian American and growing up sushi this definitely lived up to my standards. Not only that but the hospitality by this small owned family restaurant is surely warm and welcoming. I will only order sushi from here from no onwards!
Skye Moffett
I cannot say enough good things about this place, the Sushi is fantastic. But with some polite urging from the staff I stepped outside of the sushi zone and into the warm plates and WOW... I've never had Japanese food like this. I wish I had taken pictures, but I was busy sucking sauce off bones and ordering more. "Authentic" doesn't even begin to cover the flavours this place provides. I never thought that a radish could be one of the best things I've put in my mouth. Please give this place a try and do as I did and try something not just sushi.
Ellen Gittelsohn
Wonderful dining experience. The sushi and sashimi is fresh and delicious. The vegetable rolls are so flavorful. I recommend a combination of sashimi and vegetable rolls. And the service staff is knowledgeable and friendly. We got to hear about the owner’s lifelong passion for creating the best sushi I’ve ever eaten.

The food at this place is top notch. Everything is FRESH and the sushi has been consistently good. It has become our regular date night spot. I love that they change up their menu each month, we always get to try something new. The staff members we have met over the last few months are all so friendly and have taken the time to explain the menu and make recommendations. We have never been disappointed here and always look forward to coming back!
