Reviews of Shalimar of India
Excellent northern Indian food! If you're in Burlington to visit Church Street, don't lokit yourself to the food options there. Just outside of that main shopping district has so many excellent options and this is one of them.
Samosa are one of my favorite dishes and the ones here are excellent. The naan and the curry I had were excellent as well. My friends all got one of the lamb curries and commented that they were excellent as well.
The prices were fair, the restaurant was clean, and the owners were very friendly and took good care of us. I'd come back here without a doubt whenever I am in the area again.
Great meal in a simple and friendly environment.
I had the Mulligatawny Soup which had lentils, vegetables, and spices. I could detect small bites of ginger which made the taste pop. It was served at a perfect temperature.
The Beef Jalfarei, (beef curry cooked with green peppers, tomatoes, and onions), was perfect! It mixed very well with the rice.
The Beef Vindaloo Curry, (beef curry cooked with potatoes and very hot spices), could have had a little more heat for my taste, but was good nontheless.
The Mango Milkshake was something that I had never tested and was Amazing.
Stop here only if you want great food!
Shalimar of India Burlington, Vermont
Limited halal options in Vermont.
Shalimar of India being the best desi halal place to visit.
Owned by a welcoming Sardar from Punjab India. He gives you a very positive vibes. Everything can be made as per your spice level. They are open to customize and adjust. Menu is broad and prices are affordable.
Ambiance is 4/5. Customer service is 5/5
Chicken Tikka BBQ: 5/5
Vegetable Pakora: 4/5
Chicken Curry: 4/5
Naan Bread: 5/5
Tea/Dhodh Patti: 4/5
They do offer sunday all you can eat buffet and daily indian veg/non veg thali which contains curry, rice, bread, dessert, and tea.
Target audience is local people and mostly Caucasian but their taste is very much like desi food.
Recommend to try if visiting vermont.
Ordered and my food was ready within 15 minutes. We got Vegetable Mix Curry, Vegetable Biryani, Papadam and Naan. We are vegan so being able to have great indian food options so close to us is great. The spices were delicious and the food wasn't over-salted which was refreshing. They use quality ingredients including delicious vegetables, excellent curries and flavors, and rice cooked to perfection. The food was very inexpensive and fairly priced. We each got a main and a side and spent about 17 bucks per person. We will be dining here again! Great experience!
Absolutely love this place! They offer a wide variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The portions are generous for both eating in and take out. The owners and employees are friendly and helpful if you are looking for suggestions. They also have a Sunday brunch that is very reasonable priced.
We visited this on Saturday and it was not that busy. Food quality is average. Even though it was not that busy, we didn't get much options in Jain food. Can understand they're running restaurant with limited staff but no one even served water on table. Food taste is average. Rates are slight on higher side. You might hardly get parking on street but there is a big public parking garage at walking distance. Overall okay okay experience. Thanks!
Ten! Wow I was impressed. Best Indian food I’ve EVER EATEN. Lamb masala was beautiful. Naan was just right. Everything was delicious. Only wished I had chosen to dine-in rather than pick up so I could personally thank the chef!! But I will next time because I’ll be back!
Lady was very friendly and talkative nice atmosphere coming to food which is not upto mark. We order 2 different gravy items and taste of both gravies is exactly same but content are different. Food was very flat taste wise not spicy as expected. Tea was good and starters were good too
My family and I ordered take out from them for the first time tonight. We are new to this area and are super happy we found this place. The food was perfection and filled with so much flavor and perfect spice. I would definitely recommend if you love Indian food.
Don’t really have anything bad to say about this place just wasn’t my type of food. Thought I’d try something different and this was my first time ever trying Indian food. My son loves chicken tiki Marsala And seem to enjoy it and that it was with saffron. And I have to say it smelled so much better than the kind he buys at the grocery store!!! For me though it just wasn’t my thing I’m sure anyone who loves this type of food would love it here though
I ordered the chicken tiki masala and the chicken curry with some basmati rice and naan . Very delicious and at the right price! A hidden gem! I will definitely go back!
Had such a wonderful takeout experience at Shalimar of India this evening. I arrived a bit early and was greeted by a kind host (and cook? They seemed to be the only one there! Amazed by their ability if so!) who gave me an accurate estimate of when my order would be ready (Right on time, unlike me!)
The Malai Kofta is life-changing. This is a new dish to me, and I have nothing to compare it to, but I feel like this must be exemplary.
Can't recommend enough!
Wonderful and tasty food and owner owned and operated.Nice people and wonderful Vegetarian food.
Love this gem!! Best India food around!
Samosas and everything else were great! Excellent service and a great atmosphere.
Giving this place a 5-star but putting it in context a bit. Shalimar is hands down the best Indian food in Vermont. For flavor, spice level, veg/meat options, basically everything. If it were in NYC, San Diego, or Boston, it would probably only garner a four star rating and wouldn't have a ton to differentiate it from the competition.
That being said, you can't go wrong, and even if you live in one of the foodie capitals of the world, you will enjoy Shalimar and come away from your experience satisfied. I try to work in a visit to Shalimar with every trip to Burlington.
For those like me, who have a bizarre fascination with burning themselves down, make sure you use the double ask trick with spice. Ask for it hot, then make sure to say it again and clarify that you want it really hot.
Awesome food with authentic Indian taste. Very friendly staff. You will feel always welcome! Must visit place in burlington for food lovers!
Very very delicious food. Gracious service. Quick. I will be back.
Quick polite service, food was excellent and fair prices.
Amazing gem in Burlington. Run by a very sweet hardworking family. The other reviewers are stuck up entitled white people. Its not fine dining for sure but its a local family place at its best. The place is clean and the service is always friendly. The Sunday buffet is their main attraction. ~$12 for all you can eat. Coconut Nan is the best!
Been going here since 1997 or 1998 or so, nevvvvver had a bad meal, and always the kindest folks and best service.
One of the best buffets money can buy. Try to come here on Sunday to receive the buffet food onto your plate. Remember to only use two plates. Coffee and tea are not great but they are getting better. Staff is very nice and approachable about any questions you may have. Have a good dining experience!
My go-to Indian restaurant in Burlington, probably been 20 times. Super staff, friendly, the whole bit.
Flavorful Vindaloo. Heavy red color, strong spice, but missing the traditional flavors of a Goa Vindaloo.
I've been enjoying Shalimar since 1996, before I knew I was gluten intolerant. Now that I do, I still find it an easy delicious place to eat. Tonight, I tried the paneer pakora (fried cheese in a chickpea batter). It was great!
Shalimar has been great since I was a kid. Depending on the time of day, it CAN be a little short-staffed, but I have never had a bad meal there in the many years I've gone there. Good price, too. Burlington doesn't have a massive Indian population, so the fact that it has been around for so long is a testament to the high quality of the experience.
We came in about ten minutes before closing on one of the coldest, deadest nights of the year (I know, we're monsters), and despite the late hour, they were able to make us a large takeout order in almost no time. The staff was friendly, the food was good and spicy (the way I ordered it), and the portions were quite generous.
Food overall was low quality in preparation. Chicken was very dry. Rice was dry and bland. The flavoring though was good. Garlic naan was too greasy and didn't taste fresh. I did enjoy the coconut cream soup though.
Visited this place during our trip to Vermont for a mdinner. Ambiance of the restaurant is good and appears to be clean. Staff are courteous. Tried Bangan Bartha Vegetable Kurma and Bread. All items tasted bland. Indian flavors are missing in the items we ordered. Overall this place is just OK if there are no other options to eat.
We go every year. Always tasty, prompt. Vegetarian choices were excellent. Really exceptional this year! Thank you
Absolutely wonderful food!! not sure why Google says reservation neccesary, it is not.
Great atmosphere, owners are welcoming very friendly. My daughter and I both hand Tikka Masala, VERY GOOD!! For parking, if you can't find any on the street, turn right at the light onto Pearl St. there is a small parking area that is fairly inexpensive.
Very well maintained family owned small restaurant. Hospitality was unmatched as the way we were received being the last customers of the day who hardly beat the clock to get there. They still prepared food that tasted pretty fresh and also must try is the traditional punjabi lassi.
If we pass by from burlington will surely stop by again.
Amazing Indian food. Everything was so delicious and perfectly spicy. We had the mixed veg platter, Mali Kofta, Palak Chole, and some Kukfi. Loved it all!
Non veg people will be disappointed since majority of their items are vegetarian. Moreover, we ordered a goat briyani and clearly they added goat pieces in a veg briyani. Didn't taste like a briyani at all. It had mushrooms, peas and other vegetables. But it was okay for a quick fix of Indian food away from home.
After being extremely dissapointed by an overpriced hipster restaurant, I walked down the street to make it to this Indian restaurant. Suffice it to say, I was very much happy with it. My Indian food of choice is the mutton saag, and it did not disappoint. Keep up the good work!
My favorite last minute dinner plan! Been coming here for 9 years now and have never been displeased. The hardworking family puts their heart into the food and you can see it anytime "Papa Shally" come by with a smile. highly recommended!
With an array of food options, this is a must stop for good food in Burlington.
The dining room is generally empty so there is always plenty of seating. Most of the orders I saw when visiting were to go. This is a "hidden" gem in downtown Burlington and is always a stop when I'm in town.
I love Shalimar!! The people are so great and the food is delicious. Sunday brunches are a beloved burlington institution!
The food wasn't extremely tasty, but it was more than edible, and the buffet had a large selection. Surprisingly, though, the buffet lacked chicken tikka masala. The staff were super nice though, when I accidentally forgot my credit card, they held on to it for me and remembered when I came back in a panic looking for it.
This was my favorite Indian place while I lived in Vermont! I enjoyed everything I got here, very good food! I'd recommend the lamb tikki masala and spinach naan!
I was in the city for business, and was looking for good home style Indian food. I ordered vegetarian thali at Shalimar. The food was delicious, quantity was more than enough, the service was fantastic, and price was just right.
I miss the buffet, haven’t been in a minute. Can’t go wrong with the bone chicken.
This was an excellent meal! Great chai, great service and an awesome atmosphere. It hits the spot if your craving Indian flavors, they made me a vegetarian masala that was so yummy.
Consistently ready super fast, and delicious every time. Bonus points because they’re one of very very few places that will ACTUALLY make things extra spicy for me 😍 …
The food was great and the people were very nice. Service was very quick. This will be a go-to whenever we are in Burlington.
Visited this place during our trip to Vermont. Ambiance of the restaurant is ok. Staff are courteous. Tried Bangan Bartha Vegetable Kurma and Bread. All items tasted bland. Not much of flavor. Not a place for real authentic Indian food and taste.
A full menu of Indian food. Best was the Bhindi special and baingain bharta. The other dishes were just so, so, including the chicken tiki masala. The waitstaff were very attentive.
Very good food for a good price, love getting lunch here and having delicious kheer for dessert! Can get varying degrees of hot spicy but all the food is flavorful and warm, and the staff are amazing as well!
Best Indian food I have ever had in my life
I LOVE the Sunday brunch buffet. The food is so good and you definitely get your money's worth. If you're looking for something lowkey off the beat path this is it
A very friendly family owned restaurant with delicious food. Check the specials or go with one of the standard Indian dishes. Never disappoints.
Authentic Indian cuisine designed by a local family. Who doesn't wanna support a local business? Delicious food too. All you can ask for.
Great food. Mango lacci was good. And lamb Masala was spicy and good as expected.
Indian cuisine with limited north indian choices. Taste can be improved. Once you can have it. Hosts are kind people.
Some of the best food I've honestly ever had. Not a great place to eat if you're in a hurry but it's so worth the wait. They deliver too.
The Shalimar Sunday Brunch is amazing. For only ten dollars you have an amazing assortment of vegetarian and meat options. Try the rice pudding!
Service was excellent, food came out quick and tasty! Wish we could have eaten more but we were stuufed. Casual relaxed atmosphere. Definetly would come back!
The food was wonderful, the staff was friendly and the price was perfect. They even made my wife's favorite appetizer for her.
Food is alright, the desk lady isn't very polite, unless you're Indian. You can see her face totally change when someone of the same nationality comes in.
Great location for good family style Indian food. Nice Sunday brunch buffet, and good food the rest of the time as well.
Nice atmosphere, delicious food, and friendly service. I go here every chance I get! And they deliver with TOGO for those days when it's too cold to go anywhere.
Amazing saag paneer! The best indian I’ve found in Burlington! The decor could definitely use some renovation, though.
Amazing food, run by the sweetest family. I have no idea where these negative reviews are coming from. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended!
Food is delicious, great vegetarian options, and the staff is always very friendly. Highly recommend
The Shalimar makes the best Indian food I've ever had. It's been my favorite restaurant for over 15 years!
We ordered a take out. We felt food was but not very tasty . I think we can give a 3 for this
Delicious food, lots of variety, vegetarian options, friendly service at excellent price. New favorite place.
As far as Indian food in Burlington goes you will not find better. Fast and tasty with fair prices.
Run by a North Indian family and as expected they know how to cook. Not top notch but there is nothing to complain other than Parking.
The food is authentic and always amazing. Best indian food in Vermont
it twas decent. my spicometer was not plesd but teh busboy was cute so it mad up for it. 11/10 stars
They prepared food for our group of 9 just before their closing hours. Appreciate their dedication.
The naan is amazing and so is everything else. The family runs everything, so it has an awesome homecooked feel!
If you want delecious food must visit this place and service is really good.
Amazing food and quick service, but not the most professional out clean place.
Great food! My favorite place to get food.
Good food and service ..
