Food was really good here. I had the chicken and rice. It was very tasty and did not leave me feeling heavy. I appreciated the kind service as they made me feel very welcomed. I definitely recommend coming here again! My friend who is also a vegetarian enjoyed his coconut stew and rice. This place deserves all the praise!

We stumbled onto Kismayo Kitchen while visiting Burlington for the weekend. Being Somali ourselves we came in with lower expectations on ‘authenticity’ but we were happily surprised. We ordered the novelty dish called “Federation” which is half rice and half spaghetti with choice of protein. For heat lovers like myself ask for the spicy hot sauce (basbaas). The food was delicious and the generous portions allowed us to take some for later. The atmosphere is unassuming and mom&pop style. The waitstaff and owner were friendly, attentive and patient.

Kismayo kitchen is a modern Somali street food style joint. This is by far my favorite place to grab a quick bite in Burlington. Location-wise it is a bit on the outskirts of downtown but it is certainly worth the trip or delivery. Their Philly cheese steak is one of my go-tos on the menu. A nice sub roll stuffed to the brim with beef, some hints of tomato, and a balanced amount of cheese, I’d call it one of their signature dishes. If the samosas haven’t sold out when you’re there, then ordering a couple of those is a must. And if you’re looking for the most authentic Somali experience try one of the rice dishes, which comes with choice of a chicken or vegan stew. And, if you get the chance to interact with the employees, you’ll realize that they are the friendliest kind of people making every meal here feel personalized.

The restaurant is very neat and clean. The owner’s hospitality was spectacular. He made sure that the food was served well. I went there with my family and had their chicken wrap. It was amazing! The chicken and rice in the wrap was very flavorful and perfect for lunch. The owner also served us tea on the house and it was also really delicious. If you come to Burlington and are looking for a halal spot, I would 100% recommend this place because you will not be disappointed.

incredibly friendly staff, good value, and Unique foods that are jam packed with flavor. I got this goat over rice for dinner, delicious! The meat was full of flavor and spiced beautifully. The portion of meat to rice could have been better but that is my only complaint. I cant say enough nice things about the staff, so friendly and constantly checking in to make sure the food is good! Awesome food, awesome people working there, awesome place all around! Definitely go here if you're a resident or visitor of Burlington. Unique food with a nice amount of options for how small of a place it is. I got the cheese steak (delicious), the bread was so soft and perfect. Also got a side of rice with some nice mellow flavors. And the tea was basically some great chai tea. Go here, don't miss out!

Oh my head! This is a new favourite for our family! We tried everything and LOVED it all! The tea is so delicious and comforting, and the food satisfied my taste buds & tummy perfectly. The staff were so incredibly kind to us (and were great with our little kids!) and made the experience wonderful. We will be returning on the regular.

Okay all I have to say is that immediately upon my entrance of this restaurant I felt an intense amount of acceptance and joyfulness. I was a little unsure on my decision of the meal but everything ended up just perfect. In the end I chose the chicken and rice, and at the moment when I verbally made this choice I felt my entire body become fully calm. We quickly received our order and I could not have been more pleased and excited. The kind person at the register provided us with our lovely food and we thanked them with open arms. Everything that ever could have been anticipated was provided. When I took that first bite… all I have to say was ABSOLUTELY! Absolutely YES! They have done everything they could have to manifest this idea of beautiful food into a picture perfect realization of the most perfect chicken and rice that I ever could have imagined. Come eat here! Get the Somalian Tea with milk, it's like a warm hug for your taste buds. If you like chai tea you will love this tea. We tried the Samoas light and crispy shell with yummy filling. I had the beef and a veggie. I got the goat with noodles. My family got the goat with rice and beef with rice. The rice is better than the noodles. I say this because it is so flavorful. There is love in that rice. The goat and beef was tender in a tomato based sauce but squeeze the little lime wedge over in and elevate the flavor even more. You will leave full and satisfied. Owners are super sweet and show genuine affection to everyone who stopped in. Hey Vermont if you have not eaten here yet... Same on you.

I traveled a lot and ate in many different restaurants but the hospitality and service of this place was unbelievable. The Somali rice with chicken and Kismayo Philly cheesesteaks were amazing. I was in Vermont for the weekend but the only regret I have is not finding out about this place earlier. Thank you and I will be back soon!

We were staying in the Old North End (best part of Burlington) this weekend and ate at many wonderful restaurants sampling foods from all over the world. Kismayo Kitchen topped all. Truly one of the most delicious meals we’ve had! The coconut chicken and vegetables, Somali chicken and rice, the samosas and the wonderful Somali hot sauce were all amazing. We wish we lived closer to be able to enjoy this authentic and tasty food more often! We bought extra samosas to bring home to put in the freezer. The Kismayo Kitchen family are such kind people and talented chefs!! Go to Kismayo you will be so glad you did!!!

What a find! Food was delicious and not expensive. Large portions and great service. The coconut stews we're flavorful but not spicy unless you ask for it that way. The man working also brought us additional rice and a sample of the other chicken dish to try. The tea was a wonderful touch similar to a chai latte. Would highly recommend!

We 8 people came here to have our lunch. We had coconut chicken rice and chicken wraps. The food was really delicious and the front guy named Omar was really nice. He came to us few times asking if we are doing okay. Definitely a recommended place.

Me and my friends were traveling from New York on August 28th and was looking for an halal restaurant and came across this restaurant. We never had any Somalian food, so we decided to give it a try. I am amazed how good their customer service was. One of the best I have ever seen. They came and checked on and asked how the food was. The food was ready within 15-20 mins. The people who work there are kind people!

Affordable, truly wonderful atmosphere, Black-owned and family-owned business, and the food is clean (perfect for post-workout, with generous portions and not heavy at all). The owner is always kind and attentive, and the food is perfect for anytime you wanna treat your taste buds to authentic Somali food made with love. I can't believe I discovered this gem here in VT.

Firstly, all the food delicious - probably the best food for the lowest price in all of Burlington. Secondly, the owner is the nicest person i met in Vermont. I am ashamed to not remember his name. He’s so nice he makes Vermonters look aggressive. I can’t imagine the emotional burden he bears - as Somalia is in a state of total collapse. One of my best Vermont experiences is Kismayo.

I showed up a bit early for my pickup and the gentleman behind the counter gave me a free tea while I waited (which was some of the best tea I've ever had). I highly recommend the Classic Somali Combo with beef and the Somali tea. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Vermont!

Owner is nothing short of a super nice guy. The first time I ate there he gave me my food free of charge..... So good we have been back several times as paying customers. Samosas after 4 p.m. will keep you coming back again and again..... Did I mention the super cool owner and his staff???

Really tasty dishes here, hand crafted with lovely spices and perfectly cooked rice. Honestly, the rice is something special on its own. The beef and rice was delicious! The coconut rice and chicken was excellent. The beef somosa was tasty, but was a tad dry. Adding a sauce with it could do the trick. If you have the opportunity to try the tea, do so. It's a sweeter Chai and it's worth the taste. I was very impressed. As others have noted, the owner is the consummate gracious host, coming out from the kitchen to greet you and offer samples of his work. I'd definitely go back!

Delicious, authentic and affordable food! The goat was well-seasoned and moist, and the rice was bright and flavorful. I knew nothing of Somali cuisine before coming here, but left knowing I want to explore it more. I love small, family-run operations like this - they clearly care so much about what they're doing, going above and beyond to provide friendly, attentive service and delicious food. A must-try for anyone in the Burlington/Winooski area!

This place is awesome! I’ve tried most of their stuff now and it’s all great. I get the potato salad every time I order just to have it on hand. The samosas are amazing (be sure to ask for the hot sauce if you order takeout - it’s super delicious). My husband loves the cheesesteak. Tonight I got the Somali chicken and rice combo and wow! The chicken/peppers/onion mix is so flavorful, the rice is great, and it comes with a little side salad with a spicy vinegar dressing that’s super tasty and complements the main dish perfectly. The portions are very generous, too, and the prices would extremely affordable even for smaller portions. Probably the least expensive restaurant I frequent, and also one of the most consistent & quality.

Great food and service! Really friendly host who welcomed us with open arms and checked in with us about our experience. We got our food in less than 10 minutes. The chicken & rice was flavorful, and the coconut chicken curry was creamy and pleasant. The rice is fun and colorful; apparently they mix in spinach and saffron to add the extra colors!

Wow, I saw the good reviews, but that was even better than I expected. I got beef samosas to go, and they were amazing. Crispy, not greasy at all, and the filling was delicious. Tasted like really good homemade food. I wish I’d gotten more!

I was looking for something nice and relaxing. I ordered the Kismayo Chicken Wrap Combo and Coconut soup. I really enjoyed the wrap. The soup had enough for two meals with a little added protein. I sat outside of the restaurant on a beautiful day. I was very impressed as staff saw me eating outside and brought me a napkin as I had not grabbed any. Very courteous. 100% recommend!

I am this place's new biggest fan. Went there after a close by pizza place had too long of a line and $35 for a cheese pizza. Ordered, found a table, and 10 minutes later the owner was out with two meat pie dished complements of the house because he was out of some the ingredients for one of our orders. Made a quick change and out food was out 10 minutes later. I have eaten at several places in Burlington and have been underwhelmed by the flavor of food here. It is rather bland, and expensive for the so-so quality. Not Kismayo Kitchen. This is my new go to place. 3 full meals and a soda including a 30% tip and I still walked out for $2 less than that $35 cheese pizza the other place had. Leaving that pizza joint and finding this place was the greatest twist of fate I've had in Burlington since moving here 6 months agao. Kismayo is my new go to place when I want something good, fairly priced, with great service. I cannot urge you enough to give this place a try.

These guys hustle, they're amazing. Somehow they manage to pamper everybody in their dining room while handling the high traffic of takeout orders. Order goat meat because that goes fast. If you dine in, I suggest you get their Somali tea after your meal, to go. If you don't have much time and just want to grab something quickly, get a bunch of samosas. Omar will take care of you.

Excellent, fresh food! Visiting from out of town and was recommended this place by a friend. Large portions with reasonable prices. The nicest staff/chef I've ever met! Chef gave us recommendations and added a little spice to our dishes. Space inside is small, only a few tables, but worth it to get the full experience and the freshest food. The sign inside says "the secret ingredient is always love" and that's exactly what you get in the service and food here. 10/10 would recommend to anyone in the area.

Reliable simplicity and so flavorful. The best hot sauce IMO! Hot, sour, and rings your mouth with fire. I love it. Update 1/31/22: The flavor of the food is still excellent, but there is now regular hot sauce and hot sauce mixed with mayonnaise so you have to specify. Also the Somali Tea is delicious. Sweet milky cardamom goodness. But for goodness sakes (literally) if you don't like sweet spiced tea just don't order it. Do not try to get it changed by asking for it "without sugar"!

Been here twice now, and the food has blown me away both times. The chicken gyro is AWESOME as well as the Kismayo cheesesteak. The goat was great too! Haven't had anything less than stellar food here. The Somali tea is to die for (especially on a cold day). Plus, the owner is a person who genuinely cares about the customers and the food that comes out of the kitchen. A truly humble, caring human being. I hope he sees all the success he strives for in his endeavors.

So delicious! This delightful gem has fresh, healthy, and carefully prepared food and some of the nicest people you’ll meet. Omar, the owner, is kind and thoughtful, and the crew are attentive and quick. And vegans/vegetarians, don’t despair! The menu on the website doesn’t highlight the veg options, but there’s an amazing rice and stewed veggies dish, a coconut stew, and perfectly flaky veg samosas.

Unpretentious but great food. Such a friendly and generous staff. Dont expect some Michelin star atmosphere, but the food is authentic, flavorful, and plenty. Definitely the Somali chicken and rice. Mostly a take-out place, but they sat 8 of us tonight, and the owner was the server. He brought two complete dishes on the house just for us to try. Everything Halal, except the Philly Cheesesteak.

I just visited Kismayo for lunch and 1) the Somali tea with milk is EXACTLY what you need this winter. It's warm, sweet, delicious, and almost makes you forget about the pandemic. 2) We ordered the Philly steak, Chicken Wrap, and Samosas for food and everything was delicious. I in particular really liked the Philly steak and the veggie samosa. I can't wait to order again. 3) Omar, the owner, is wonderful as was the other staff member I met. MUST STOP IF IN AREA we are here in a group of 10 from NJ and were looking for a halal restaurant. Didn’t want Turkish as we have many at home and fortunately found this place right by Burlington main area. Simple menu and absolutely delicious and tasty. Have some Somalian aunties working in the back so you know the food is legit (which is was). Super delicious. We had literally everything on the menu. I favorite was beef and rice and cheese steak. Omar the owner was SO kind. One of the best customer service I’ve ever gotten

An absolute must if you're in the Burlington area. Amazing food and warm, friendly service! We had the goat and chicken rice combos. Both were perfectly seasoned and delicious. The tea (with milk) was to die for, and the samosas were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The portions were generous too. We will absolutely be back again.

One of the best places we visited while we were in the area, the food selection is simple yet has an impact. The samosas are addicting, the wraps and sauce hauntingly good, and the tea is to die for. I'd recommend this little place to anyone who has a taste for flavorful food.

What a fantastic find. It is all about the food and taste, and this tiny place delivers in bunches. Chicken and pasta were tasteful, fresh and plentiful. Samosas had a great filling and are wonderful starters. We topped it off with a lovely tea. Highly recommended

Absolutely incredible! If you haven't been, go ASAP. My friends had been recommending Kismayo and I finally got the pleasure of trying it last night. Not only was the food incredible, the owner was so accommodating and lovely. I called at 8:20 not realizing they close at 8, and he made me a delicious meal anyway. The chicken & rice I ordered was phenomenal. As was the potato salad and samosa that he kindly gave me to try. Everything was so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Also, the Somali hot sauce is my new favorite condiment. I will be going back as soon as possible!

Wow! The owner of this place is so sweet! He complimented my daughter and brought the food to us curbside, even offered a glass of tea. Kind of a hole in the wall place in what was likely previously a gas station. I think they converted to almost 100% takeout during covid. Food was terrific and filling and the service was fantastic. We went at a strange time so the owner gave us free tea and samosas. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. It was my first time visiting Kismayo after having read about it several weeks ago. Omar (owner) was very kind, and it is clear how much he cares about the food and his customers. I ordered the coconut curry and a vegan samoso. Both were delicious! I made the mistake of not clarifying vegan coconut curry and initially received the chicken coconut curry. Omar apologized (it was not his fault at all, it was on me for not clarifying), and he quickly made me a brand new meal (the curry and even the rice that came with it). I will be back! Went to Kismayo Kitchen for the first time, and it was excellent. The manager (or owner) on duty was so welcoming, and gave me a free Samosa and thanked me deeply for coming. Very authentic Somali food meets Vermont hospitality, making one of the best experiences we have in this area. Omar, the owner is particularly helpful, but the food itself is the star. The aunties in the back make delicious food, that will satisfy all palettes. We had the beef and somlai rice, which was spiced very well, the coconut chicken stew was very rich, and the samosas hit the spot. Definitely a go to spot in Burlington!

My first time trying Kismayo Kitchen, and I would say it’s pretty good. I ordered the chicken gyro, which was tasty. It was overloaded and was hard to handle, so I ended up eating it with a fork, and too much lettuce for my liking. Since it was my first time there, they gave me a complimentary simosa (beef). I really like samosas, but this one wasn’t that good. The dough was super tough, and the filling was so dry. The flavor was disappointing, I didn’t finish it. But overall a good lunch.

Takeout food for the whole family. First time visitor here. We stopped in for some takeout tonight and were very pleased to say the least. Our 11 month old and 5 yr old devoured the 2 simosas. Such a wonderful place with a friendly staff. I came in a while ago (literally posting this a few months later since remembered how much I loved this experience enough to go out of my way to post this.) I was picking up a Door Dash order which was expected to take a little while, they guy working there invited me to sit down and asked me about my day and gave me a beef samosa to try (and was genuinely very excited for me to try it.) Burlington has really needed an affordable, healthy but not a salad or poke place, quick service and to the point restaurant that doesn’t serve burgers or pizza forever. I told him I would be there at 8:55 five minutes before closing. When I arrived Omar told me he had been waiting to make it when I showed up so it would be fresh!!!!!!! He literally worked a few minutes late just so I could have a fresh sandwich what indeed customer service. He even gave my wife a free samosa because she hadn’t ordered anything and “he didn’t want her to have to sit there and watch me eat” the owner/operator has an amazing work ethic and again the food is excellent and the cheese steak sandwich is a must have it is delicious.

Kismayo has had a special place in my heart since I discovered it my first semester of college this fall. Ive lived in Vermont my whole life and the food is truly some of the best in Burlington. I’ve had busy times during finals where I had to talk myself down from not ordering nightly! There’s not a single thing on the menu I do not like and trust me I’ve tried it all. I unfortunately had to relocate due to covid so I had not been able to order for a few months now, being back at my apartment the first place I was comfortable ordering from was Kismayo! Not gonna lie I definitely experienced a few happy tears over my Chicken Combo. We decided to try Kismayo Kitchen after watching a news feature story. Having never had Somali food before we had no idea what to expect. The food was AMAZING! I went when Omar first opened and thought it was just okay but worth a second try. I just went for the fourth time today and had the Somali Rice with Chicken, it's so much better now, very very good. Ton of flavor, fresh tasting, big portion. So happy to see this place doing well. Only area of improvement would be the veggie somosa. Flavors and spices are great, but the quality of the veggies used could be better.

After coming home from a camping trip and feeling too exhausted to cook, I laid in bed and pulled up DoorDash to let me get some food straight to my door, no effort needed. To my surprise I saw a new restaurant, Kismayo Kitchen, and was intrigued. I ordered the Somali rice combo meal with a beef samosa, and what appeared at my door absolutely blew me away. The rice was fluffy, the chicken was well seasoned and perfectly cooked, and the array of spices and vegetables really brought it all together. The samosa was generously filled with an abundance of delicious minced meat, not too soggy, not too dry. I will definitely eat their food again and will make a point now to stop at the physical location!

What a privilege to have such diverse options in this small corner of the U.S.! I happened across Kismayo’s Kitchen while waiting to check into my Airbnb – what luck! The service was friendly and accommodating and the food was exceptional. Some of the food has a kick, but it’s balanced nicely so you get the flavor without melting your mouth. Another customer recommended the tea, which is made in-house, and is good enough to make me a tea drinker (I generally drink coffee). I made sure to stop in for another meal before leaving town just to get another cup and try another dish. I highly recommend Kismayo’s Kitchen to anyone interested in expanding their palate. On a side note, the owner asked me how I like Burlington. I responded that I like Burlington and that it’s a very beautiful town. I in-turn asked him how he likes Burlington and he responded that he likes Burlington because it is safe. What a simple but profound observation, especially when I consider that safety is one benefit I enjoy on a daily basis… yet take for granted so easily. Thank you for reminding me of all the things I have to be grateful for!

This place is fire. Omar, the owner and cook, is a nutritionist with a knack for lightweight but filling somali cuisine. I tried the beef, chicken, and goat options for is signature plate, and they are all tender and juicy, with well-balanced spices. Gotta go back to try the Philly Cheesesteak. He says his goal is to chef up the best around. Another claim to fame - one of if not Thee only restaurants in the state to serve goat. All in all a great time, friendly service, cozy and homey decor, a tasty dinner, and feeling good about supporting this great guy's cool project.
