We went searching for hole in the wall places to eat and Red Sea knocked it out of the park. The owner took his time to explain the whole menu to us with out being asked as he sat us and let us know the difference between each type of food since it’s a Ethiopian/Mediterranean/Cajun offering. Each and every dish was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Our dishes came out at different times to ensure our meals were fresh to the table as well. We were checked on multiple times to ensure we were happy with our experience and given a very personal experience. We will definitely be back.

When I was in Birmingham for Christmas I had a craving for Ethiopian (it happens a lot!) and so google was my best friend! With it, I found this amazing little spot that delivered and had very good reviews! I unfortunately didn’t get to dine in so I cannot comment on the decor or setting but the food was wonderful! The lamb was tender and juicy with the right amount of heat, deliciously sour Injera and an equally enjoyable chicken dishes. Can’t wait to try this place again when I’m back in town, so many things left to try!

My family and I were delighted to discover this place. We love Ethiopian food and didn't know it was available in Birmingham. We started with an order of dolmas, which were delicious Then we had the combination and the vegetable platter for four of us which was perfect. The food was comparable to other Ethiopian food we have had. Very tasty and nicely spiced. Also, it was great to have to Mediterranean options for my mother, who does not like anything spicy. We are adding this to our rotation of regular restaurants.

It was our first time. We didn’t know what to order so we tried the ultimate platter. That way, we was able to sample all of the popular dishes. It’s enough food to feed 3-4 people. The food was delicious. Plus we had an amazing experience.

Went in with a group of 13 and the menu had something for everyone. So many different options and everything tasted amazing! It’s common for ethiopian restaurants to have slow turn around times, but not here! My friends and I ordered the ultimate platter, sambosa, and the rice. I recommend them all and want to give the owner Akhil a shout out for the amazing service!! Add this place to your trip plans if you’re visiting, or stop by if you live in the area, you won’t be disappointed.

Came on a Saturday for lunch, and had an excellent meal. We ordered the Red Sea Sampler and enjoyed every single dish.The hot tea was also nicely spiced and a great addition to the meal. Service was friendly and fast, and the atmosphere is pleasant. We will definitely return to this location

First time finding this little place and being introduced to Ethiopian food; absolutely a new favorite place! We got the combo platter and I was pleasantly surprised at A) how much food was included and B) how scrumptious the Injera and the rice were! We wanted to try a new place and were pleasantly surprised by Red Sea. My wife and I ordered the sampler platter. I really enjoyed the meat dishes, the only criticism I have may come from a place of ignorance because I have never eaten Ethiopian before are some of the vegetables were pureed, and that is a texture that I don't normally enjoy. Interesting spices and a new place for my wife and I to try again.

Go big or go home! If you don't know what to get, just get the giant platter! You won't regret it unless you're wearing tight pants. My favorites were the lentils and the beef and the berbere sauce.

Food is amazing. We had the Ethiopian specialty platter and some of the Cajun grouper and shrimp. Everything was fresh and delicious. This family run business is fantastic. After dinner we enjoyed visiting the grocery store which is attached. We bought some great things to take home. This is one of our favorite places, and we have never been disappointed.

This was me and my best friend’s first time trying this restaurant, and we really didn’t know what to expect. We got beef sambusa and hummus as appetizers. We also got the ultimate Red Sea combination just to be able to try everything, and everything was absolutely delicious! Drove down from Fort Payne for an event in downtown Birmingham, and had a bit of time to be adventurous beforehand. A friend had previously recommended Red Sea… and the idea of Ethiopian, Mediterranean AND Cajun proved too good for my companions to refuse. I’m definitely glad we drove across town to stop in. Food was just hot & spicy enough, and had great, complex savory flavors. We all left very satisfied with our meals and the service for an early dinner on a Saturday!

My son and I had dinner at Red Sea for the first time last weekend, and we will definitely go back! We had been wanting to try Ethiopian cuisine for a while, and this was a great first time. We started off with chicken sambusa, which were great, then we split the large combination platter. We loved everything on it! The staff was very courteous, and patient with all of our questions. Great place to get lamb shank!!! Also, if you like Ethiopian food (Injera and curries) this is the place to come in Bham. Service is fast. And the food came out fast. Great spiced tea!!!

I was so excited to find an Ethiopian restaurant in ALABAMA of all places.. I've been to several in other cities across the country and this was the best BY FAR. We ordered the Red Sea Combination to share and I will say it was amazing! The lamb, beef, and chicken were each perfectly cooked and tender. The chickpea paste was spicy but absolutely perfect for my taste. The lentils were delicious, the green beans flavorful, the cabbage was seasoned perfectly, and even though I don't eat beets...I LOVED the beets. My favorite part was eating the injera on the bottom that had soaked in all of the flavors! I almost forgot, the waiter was great! I can't recall his name, but he was so helpful and friendly. He answered all of my companion's questions and made suggestions that really helped us out! Keep up the great work young man!

My wife and I decided to dine in for our date night and neither one of us had been to this restaurant before. She ordered the Butter Chicken and I ordered one of the Ethiopian dishes (the Red Sea Special with Beef) and my food was amazing! So fresh and delishish and it paired so well with the injera! The restaurant was pleasant and we were able to have nice conversation without everything being too loud. We will be coming back again!

This is a solid choice, easy four star in my mind. I think the 4.6 rating is a fair rating but not quite a five star place. It’s on the upper end of Ethiopian food that I have had although my exposure to Ethiopian food is a bit limited. I did enjoy the spices used and it’s a cool spot to just chill and not have to get dressed up. My type of spot!

Seriously one of the best kept secrets in Birmingham. We had one of the best meals we’ve had in quite some time. We ordered the chicken awaze ribs as well as the veggie platter with injera with spinach, split pea, spiced chickpea, and split lentils. The flavor of the food was super lively and exciting. We were floored by how affordable our entire meal was. So glad we went!

I’ve been here twice and was quite impressed both times in terms of the Ethiopian food available on the menu. The prices are pretty reasonable, too - especially for the sampler platters, which are both a good deal and a great way to try a wide variety of delicious Ethiopian dishes.

The Red Sea Ethiopian and Mediterranean Restaurant is absolutely amazing. They offer a great variety of Ethiopian dishes with house-made Injera bread. The Veggie Combo plate is so good and I’m not a vegetarian. I was also very surprised with the Mediterranean menu offerings. I highly recommend the Rice Kabsa, which is a savory rice dish topped with chicken, lamb or goat. For an appetizer, the Baba Gjanouj has a delightfully smoky flavor; I could eat it every day.

Went in to try something new and the server helped explain all of the menu items. Definitely worth a visit if you're around town, or at least order take out.

Every bit of our visit was phenomenal. We had the ultimate combination. Every dish was so flavorful. Served with plenty of injera. The service was great. I didnt catch the name of the young lady who stopped by our table but I believe she was the chef. She was so sweet and pleasant wanting to make sure we enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be back and if you haven't been you should make plans to go soon. A pleasant bonus was the halal store that it is attached to. Lots of wonderful food products and an assortment of shisha supplies.

Me and my friend came for a dinner. We both shared the combination platter, which includes three types of meat, seven types of vegetarian dishes including lentil, spinach etc. The food is perfectly cooked with awesome blend of herbs and spices. The injera breads were perfect. The portion size was huge for both of us. We had to take a Togo box. We finished our meal with a piece of kanafeh ( middle eastern dessert), which was not the best one. ( I had better version of kanafeh before somewhere ). The restaurant is neat and clean including the restroom. The place shares its premises with a middle eastern grocery shop. I would definitely recommend the place and would come back.

Extremely flavorful and great portion size for the price. We didn’t have anything we didn’t like. We have been multiple times to get the ultimate combination of Ethiopian food. It's well enough food for 4 people with one or two appetizers. It's fantastic food and for a great price. I highly recommend checking it out.

I have been coming here for years and I can honestly say that it just ok. Don't get me wrong the food is good but the wait time is horrendous, the way they market is a little misleading, and they really could use some more wait staff outside of the family to come and check on their customers. I thought it would get better but really it hasn't.

Having lunch time in a restaurant with an Arabic background should be timed outside Ramadan. How do you cook and taste your meals? Vegetarian combo was good and the injera (moist, slightly spongy sourdough flatbread) extremely tasty. Waiter attentive and the atmosphere pleasant. Three of us split the Red Sea Combination with half injera and half rice plus two veg sambusas and we loved it all! I’ve never had Ethiopian before and highly recommend getting this plate so that you can try a variety of dishes at once. The food was delicious and this quantity could have easily fed a fourth person! This was well worth the price and affordable to split amongst our group.

The owner of this establishment is so cultured, kind hearted, and talented. The service was top tier and the food was AMAZING. I’m a picky eater and I had no complaints. Don't judge! I almost did this. It looks like a small hole in the wall really. It's connected to a supermarket. Nevertheless, we were very surprised to see how clean the restaurant was. The menu was a duel between the Ethiopian side and the Mediterranean side. They prepare very large portions that are easy for sharing and table groups. The lamb, beef, chicken and a variety of other spices and herbs. I would recommend the sampler large enough for three people.

I have only good things to say about Red Sea. Very unassuming from the outside, but it's worth it to step inside. The food is great, some cuisine you don't see in Birmingham (and some tamer options like a lot of Cajun choices?), reasonably priced. The servers are always attentive and food comes out very quickly. The food at Red Sea Ethiopian and Mediterranean was DELICIOUS! My girlfriend and I had the Red Sea Ultimate Sampler and there was not a bad thing on the plate. The flavors were clean and bright, with just the right amount of spice. We loved it! Do yourself a favor and try this place out. The people are friendly, and answered all my questions. We love this place. Low-key, friendly atmosphere with great food. It's amazing that they attempt to do not one, but three different cuisine styles, and everything we've tried from across the spectrum is always good. Some of our favorites are the cajun gator bites (they come fried, but you can ask to get them blackened, which I highly recommend- both are delicious.) The sambosas are another great appetizer. Then the Ethiopian food.... all so good. We usually get the vegetarian sampler and one of the meat courses (lamb awaze tibs is a favorite, but all that we've had is great. Great stuff all around here.

Update: Saturday - May 14th I decided to give Red Sea another chance and was glad I did. The food was very good as always, but they seem to have turned things around regarding service, pricing, etc. Everything is delicious, but their Cajun dishes are where it's at. Give them a try. ‐-- Original review I used to eat here every week, but I'm never going back. The food is still good. However, the new ownership is a bitter disappointment. Service is much worse than before. The wait staff seems totally inexperienced. I watched a table of four recieve their meals, but no one ever gave them silverware. Prices are also higher and the portions seem smaller. Not only that, the prices on the menu are wrong. They raised prices, but didn't update the menus. Your bill will be higher than you anticipate.

A huge platter filled with a sample of the veggies, and beef, chicken doro wot and lamb with a salad. The injera is perfect and the foooood is prepared with time and love. Five of us had lunch here before taking our guests to the airport. We've eaten here before, but with the new ownership it is sooooo much better! Wow! They've redone the interior decor, the plates, and the bathroom, and the food is now top notch! The beef samosas and their sauces started us out and they were excellent. My wife and I had the Lamb Key Wot and the Lamb Awaze Tibs, and both were perfectly spicy with generous lamb portions. The other guests had other lamb dishes and the veggie combo, offering nothing but praise and surprise that Birmingham had a place this good. We finished by sharing the pot of Ethiopian coffee with incense and it was a sensory delight (and the coffee was good). The service was prompt and competent, our waitress an absolute joy and so pleasant. She made a couple of accommodations with no problem. Oh, and using an AL state credit card was no problem having the sales tax waived. It's rare to say that places improve after a change of ownership, but Red Sea is better in every category now. Give them a shot! (and the Halal store next door is a community treasure!)

Easily my favorite restaurant in Birmingham (and I've been to many). The menu's range is fantastic, so I never tire of eating here. Knowing that such flavorful, wholesome, authentic food is a three minute drive away contributes immensely to my quality of life. The prices are very fair, too! I especially love the veggie plate, the fried green tomatoes, and the jambalaya. They have had a few off days, where the chicken and shrimp were overcooked and my veggies were undercooked. And if you're used to Atlanta's Ethiopian, Red Sea is not as good. Still, the variety makes up for it, and I don't live in Atlanta, so I continue to stand by Red Sea. My only wish is that vegan and vegetarian dishes were better labeled, especially on the newer cajun menu.

Yes, they serve both Ethiopian and Mediterranian food, but I do not think they give themselves enough credit on how delightful their food actually is. Their food was so incredible, a band of angels could have descended from the heavens trumpeting heavenly tunes, and I would have told them "nah, this key wot is divine enough for me, y'all, come back in twenty when I am done eating and these spices have cleared up my sinuses. My party tried the vegetarian sampler and fish dulet, and we loved it. Service was great and had a interesting convo with one of the owners about Ethiopia. All in all, I'll definitely be back soon to try some other authentic dishes.

The food was amazing. Started with hummus and falafel as an app, hands down best falafel I've had in Bham, and falafel is the easiest way to my heart. I will be back for that alone. For the main, I shared the Ethiopian combination platter with some friends, everything was well seasoned and the portion was plenty for the three of us. Meat was tender and delicious, veggie dishes were flavorful and delicious. Shout out to the beets and the lentils! Have I mentioned it was delicious? We checked out the attached market after dinner. Good selection, I will have to come back when I need specialty spices. I did pick up some honey comb, you know for a killer cheese plate. All and all, do yourself a favor and check it out.
