Reviews of Chez Fonfon

10/10 recommend this gem of a restaurant. The ambiance is low lit and romantic, however a little loud since it's smaller and packed, but no complaints here. Our waiter was top notch. Cordial, explained the menu well, never let our drinks drop an inch, and very attentive. The salad appetizer was delicious. Plenty for two to share. Husband had the special fish of the night (forgot the name) over zucchini/squash/some sauce which was cooked to perfection. My steak with fries/salad was indescribably good. I've honestly never had better french fries in my life. We also tried three non-alcoholic drinks. The lime/ginger mint, the grapefruit/orange/lime, and the watermelon one. All delicious!!! Oh and get their espresso shot. My Brazilian husband approved! The prices were really not bad compared to other places we've been. Totally worth it!

This place was amazing. I was in Birmingham for a work trip, and I liked the restaurant so much I went twice. I sat at the bar both times solo without a reservation, but it did get pretty busy so try and get a reservation if you can!
The Trout is amazing (my favorite). The burger is amazing. Also the Coconut pecan cake is a must. There were other appetizers that people next to me ordered, and they all looked great.
The bartenders were very knowledgable and made me drinks that weren't on the menu. Well crafted.
Would highly recommend this restaurant!!!

I was visiting in Birmingham for the weekend and a friend highly suggested this as it’s one of his favorite restaurants in the city. The restaurant has an authentic French bistro feel and a nice vibe. The staff are very friendly and the food is delicious. It’s a fine dining experience. I had the Bibb salad, chicken liver mousse to start and for the main the steak and frites. Do not miss out on the coconut pecan cake and lemon meringue! The dessert was the cherry on top.

My wife has eaten here for lunch and dinner several time but this was my first time and it did not disappoint. We ate here to celebrate a birthday and the food was amazing. Our server was very nice and did an excellent job.

Our server was amazing. The food was great! I wish I had time to savor it before it got cold, but I can't argue with thermodynamics...
Also, the outdoor patio was GORGEOUS.

One of our favorite places in Birmingham! Small, quaint, and perfect! This beautiful French bistro and cafe run by James Beard award-winning chef, Frank Stitt, is impeccable.
Not overwrought, it’s simplicity will win you over. The attentive and joyful waitstaff never miss a chance to make your stay enjoyable. Down to earth and not stuffy, the atmosphere is more neighborhood family and friends than fine dining. But, the food and service match the exacting demands of the owner-operator.
We started with the seasonal Paradise Farm roasted figs, farmer's cheese, ham, hazelnuts & mint.
I had the Hamburger Fonfon, comté, grilled red onion, pickles, with pommes frites. I’ve had this burger probably eight times and it never disappoints.
My wife enjoyed the Omelette with ratatouille, chèvre & basil. The texture was unbelievably fluffy and perfect.
Since we were celebrating a birthday and anniversary, we ended with both the Coconut pecan cake and Berry trifle paired with black decaf coffee.
The handwritten chocolate well-wishes were a nice touch.
Highly recommended!

Wish I could give this French restaurant 6 out of 5 stars, everything was so perfect! Tyler is an excellent server and the chef makes the best food in Birmingham. Try the crab cake!

Chez Fonfon is one of my personal favorites and a must visit each time we come to Birmingham. Make sure you plan your visit and make reservations in advance.
On this particular visit we started with the soup of the day and a salad. The soup was a white bean and bacon. It had a creamy yet savory flavor.
We ordered the poulet rouge with duck fat potatos and the veal medallions (Tuesday special). The poulet or chicken had a rich depth of complex flavors. The veal medallions were tender and delicious.
For dessert we ordered the Basque cake and the lemon meringue tart. The cake was a buttery pound cake with a rich cream sauce. The lemon tart was velvety acidic filling in a crisp tart shell. We enjoyed both desserts, but the Basque cake was perhaps one of the best desserts I've ever eaten.
Garrett was our waiter and the level of service was impeccable.

A small French bistro style restaurant in downtown Birmingham. Popped in here for a quick snack while driving through. As soon as we walked in we knew it was going to be good. Great atmosphere. A small well staffed place with tons of French inspired food. We had the chicken liver moose, the Fish paillard, and Steak Tartare. All very well executed and just enough to entice you to want more. I will definitely come back for the full experience next time I pass through. Great place

This restaurant was recommended by an LA based foodie and we were thrilled with our experience. We went to Birmingham from Mississippi for our daughter's birthday for an overnight and Chez Fonfon was the highlight. This is a shop front restaurant with street parking in the bar and restaurant district downtown; we walked from our hotel nearby. We started with a bottle of Gaston Chiquet Champagne which was outstanding. We enjoyed the Chicken Liver mousse, the Rillettes Tartine and the Fonfon salad. I would give the escargot a miss next time as the dish missed the mark on taste and presentation; missing a few pieces of a baguette. We loved the moules frites, the trout amandine and my daughter enjoyed the venison. We enjoyed the chocolate nut tarte for dessert. We had a bottle of Saint Emilion Haut Piquat red wine with dinner. Service was excellent and we loved the ambiance, a beautiful French bistro. Book well in advance.

We’ve been returning here again and again for years. The excellent food, impeccable service, and comfortable atmosphere keep us coming back. My personal favorite dish is the croque madam- a hot ham and cheese sandwich with a delicious creamy sauce and fried egg. Their pommes frites are the best I’ve had. They have a nice wine list and innovative yet classic cocktails- think fresh watermelon margaritas in summer. Don’t pass on desert- theirs are worth it. Make sure to get reservations 2 weeks in advance.

Best restaurant in Bham. Period. We didn’t have reservations and had to wait an hour for a seat at the bar on a weekday, but let me tell you, IT WAS WORTH IT. The staff went above and beyond, the bartenders were amazing and functioned as excellent and knowledgeable servers, answering all of our questions with care and detail. I had trout alamandine and it was the best trout I’ve ever had. I usually only eat trout when I’m out West, but the way this trout was prepared literally trumped anything I’ve ever had out West. The browned butter vinaigrette gave it a perfectly sweet nutty flavor paired with the tartness of the vinegar to balance it out. The almonds were perfectly toasted to crispy perfection. It was Michelin worthy. For dessert we had a chocolate caramel nut tarte with a twenty year old port and it was phenomenal. Service, ambiance, price, presentation, flavor- this restaurant checks all the boxes! I highly recommend it and I’ll be back for sure!

Chez Fon Fon is the best dining experience of in season, mouth watering, delicious, gourmet foods! The appetizer was in season figs with hazelnuts and a smooth cheese, with a hint of chili oil paired with a light Muscadet. For my main course, a fluffy omelet stuffed with ratatouille and delicious goat cheese, paired with a 2019 Pinot Noir blessed by Frank Stitt! Our desert was a beautiful ending of Berry trifle and coconut pecan cake to celebrate birthday and an anniversary! Our waiter, Patrick, was a joy and a perfect companion to our entire experience! Thank you Chez Fon Fon for an amazing time and memories made!

What a gem of a French restaurant. We were driving home to chicago and accidentally found this place on google maps. It was so delicious that truthfully we didn’t even take any pictures of the food. All that was left was a cup of Parisian tea on the table :-) we had the croque madam and the lamb as well as the chicken liver which seemed to taste just like in France. The coconut cake was super tasty as well. Not a cheap lunch but very well worth it. Will be back when going back to Orange beach!

I mean. Just wow. A great experience every time. Some of the best dishes I've ever had with flavor combinations I'd never have imagined but that really work well.
Blake Wilbanks
Fantastic service and a warm atmosphere combined with great food made for a magical dinner in Birmingham.
Arreis “NaturalDiva” Black
The food was delicious. The outside patio area is a very relaxed vibe. Offers a unique atmosphere in Birmingham compared to other restaurants. First impression was excellent and I would recommend to anyone that’s visiting the area and also locals
Joshua Randazza-Pade
A must in Birmingham. This intimate French Bistro offers a focused menu, excellent service, and a great wine list. I didn’t think I could enjoy a bistro burger with frites more. They’re small plates are great for sharing. Do not pass up dessert, the pastries are the perfect completion to a meal.
Al Stankus
A gem of restaurant. Creative and delicious and very much a bistro experience.
Wine list is very good with some nice natural wines and the bar makes excellent cocktails.
Adding to everything was Patrick, a real pro who has been with the restaurant group for 22 years.
Nicole T. Springer
Amazing service. Incredible. The croquet madame was my husband's absolutely favorite. The escargot is butter and shallot was amazing. A great vibe, formal but you can still wear jeans and feel comfortable. Delicious food and drinks.
Steven Mccornack
As with all my reviews, I make no claims regarding the generalizability of my/our experience - this is simply what WE experienced, early Saturday evening, February 4, 2023; and it was a tad mixed, although (as will become clear) the final result was overwhelmingly positive. The service was spectacular. I wish I could recall our server's name (attractive 30-something man, close-cropped beard), but he was fantastically attentive throughout: A+. Now to the food. You're not GIVEN bread - which strikes me as odd - but you have to ORDER it. And when the menu says "petite" baguette, they MEAN it. Although crispy, chewy, and delicious, this tiny baguette provided enough for each of the four of us to have 1-2 bites. Then you're in the uncomfortable position of having to order AGAIN, should you wish more bread. Not a fan of this. Appetizers: the four of us ordered four different items, and shared. The escargot (despite various rave reviews) were quite average: well prepared, mind you, but a bit greasy (in a pool of melted butter), not especially or unusually flavorful (tasted like snails sauteed in butter, nothing more or less), and with a bit of grit in one of them. Grade: C. The red snapper special was tasty and fresh; good but not great. A solid B. But the Bibb salad and salmon tartine were both VERY flavorful and delicious - the clear winners of this round. Solid A's for both. Mains: the much-touted burgers lived up to their reps. Pretty much perfectly-prepared; and although they weren't THE absolute "best burger I've ever had," they were darn near close. Solid A. The fries were crispy and well-prepared, but a bit under-seasoned. Grade: B. But (and here's the big "but" of this review), the Coq Au Vin was TO DIE FOR. I mean, the kind of dish you take a bite of, and just pause, close your eyes, and go (out loud and involuntarily) "OMG!" One of THE most delicious things I have EVER eaten at ANY restaurant (my mouth is STILL watering, at the mere recollective thought of it). And the Flatiron Steak was the same - melt-in-your-mouth delicious, with INCREDIBLE flavor. All four of us (two got the burgers, the other two the steak and Coq) agreed that although we may have had "different" at other restaurants, we couldn't recall ever eating anything that was "better" than the steak or coq. A++ for both (100/100). Astonishingly good. Desserts: across-the-board winners. Much argument ensued regarding which one was "best" (we ordered the Basque cake, the chocolate pot de creme, and the lemon tart), but I will say this: I have NEVER had a MORE delicious lemon dessert than this tart. It was PERFECTION. A++. So yeah, taken as a whole, there were a few minor "misses," but the "hits" were SO spectacular, the overall experience was 5/5 stars - especially when price and service are factored in. The former is important: bang for the buck, this is the runaway best restaurant in the Birmingham area. And the most telling indicator is that we're all still talking about "how incredible that meal was," the day after - and planning our next visit. :-)

Excellent meal and excellent service from our server Tyler! Fish paillard and redfish with crab beurre blanc were highlights. Basque cake was perhaps the best dessert I’ve ever had…can’t go wrong!

I’m in Bham twice a week and sometimes I just have to treat myself! I could find not one person to join me. Nonetheless, It was a fabulous experience. I didn’t get a photo of my drum when it arrived because I quickly devoured it. My favorite fish is either red snapper or sheepshead. I will now have to add drum to that list. It was excellent with the citrus relish! The waiter was gracious and helpful with his recommendations which he gave after asking me a few questions. I didn’t feel out of place eating alone here because the atmosphere is delightful and the staff were all welcoming and friendly. They are still spacing tables for Covid. I appreciated the valet parking tremendously. This was my second time dining here and I’m certain I will be back.

Dining in Chez Fonfon is an absolutely wonderful experience. The perfectly cooked food presented by the knowledgeable and friendly waiters make them the best representation of French cuisine in Alabama. Our waiter, Angel, made it such a pleasant and personal experience when we visited the restaurant for my husband’s birthday last week.
Jeff Miller
Excellent food, the staff was great! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is for the hearing impaired will have an awful time hearing at this place.
Lindsay Shippey
One of our favorite restaurants in Birmingham! Safe and socially distanced outside dining with heaters
Pat Lair
Excellent food and service. The Trout Almondine with browned butter was perfect! Also good were the Lobster and Shrimp Open-faced BLT and the Steak and Fries. The Lemon Meringue Tart, the Pot of Chocolate, and the Coconut Cake were delicious.
A little noisy ... so recommend either going at a less busy time (like between 3 PM and 4 PM) or choose to dine outside in the courtyard.
Linda Tran
Charming French restaurant in downtown Birmingham. Beautiful and friendly vibe. Delicious cocktails and good food. Felt exactly like you would be in Paris.
Gabriel Robichaud
The soup of the day was incredible! Sorry I don’t remember the ingredients. The salmon was so tender and tasted to amazing, one of the best I had. It was cooked in a lot of butter and cooked perfectly. Nothing was dry in this salmon as you would expect.
I would say that this restaurant isn’t completely French. It is French cuisine with an American twist. But heck, I didn’t expect to find an amazing restaurant like this on my first day in Birmingham. You won’t really find duck or rabbit or some really French plates.
I think this might be one of the best restaurant in town. Clearly a stop if you want the best.
Brad Lee
Service was perfect. I read a review pointing to their hamburger as best in Birmingham so I had to try it. It was pretty good. I mostly liked the grilled red onion which came on it. Fries were good. My wife enjoyed the Croque Monsieur. (ham and cheese sandwich). We got a slice of coconut pecan cake to go. It was delicious! I'll go again. On a side note, we arrived at 2:18 and were told there would be no tables available until 2:30, although there were probably 10 empty tables within our view. We were seated a couple of minutes later. I still don't understand.
Audrey Ann Blakely
The Basque Cake was quite literally the best dessert we’ve ever had. Waitress was wonderful and was spot on with both wine and dessert recommendations.
In the end, we all become stories
Great, professional service. Very knowledgeable and accommodating, which is much appreciated, especially with new food allergies. I've been here twice now and sat at the bar. It's how I'm going to continue to treat myself after i come into town for (usually upsetting) drs appointments. Thank you for the only "fancy" currently happening in my life! 😘
Jonas B.
Honestly I drink so much there I can't really give you a good idea of what it is that I ate. But I can tell you that it was delicious, or I would have said it wasn't.
Went for lunch, spent several dollars, hundreds Plus. Totally worth it to have a good time

Chez is a perennial favorite. I dine here every Friday for lunch and Saturday for dinner. Each dining experience is impeccable- food, service, ambiance, and seating.
Haven’t tried them yet? You’ve not lived!

Chez Fonfon is a slice of heaven. The service is excellent (the restaurant is very well-staffed), the food is SUPERB, and the atmosphere is first-rate. I always have exceptionally good experiences here - each time I have been so impressed and pleased.
Jeffrey Rainwater
The server was too LOUD. The water is tap, unfiltered taste (worst part). Food quality was good, but not easy to find good tasting cilantro/herbs in Alabama. Roast duck is good and heavily seasoned with rosemary, more salt really brought out the flavor.
Decent experience that could have been better, if we had a different server. I heard ours having a conversation about fitness centers, and my glass remained empty long enough to remember it.
Rosa Hill
Wow! Absolutely amazing food, drinks, staff and valet parking! Please eat out back, the best spot in my opinion! It's so serene, nice and relaxing. This place is for Absolutely anyone that love fine cuisines with flavor! I had the crawfish etouffee with a strawberry dessert now, "my go to meal"! To top it off with a bottle of Rozay! Don't miss out on this treat nestled in the Five Points area!
Craig Fairley
I came here for my Birthday and it was great everything was excellent from : the escargot to the moules frites to the french 75 to the wine. This is for sure my favorite restaurant in Birmingham!
Brenda Ortiz
Very French restaurant, great service, clean, friendly, they have Valet Parking or park in the street, you need to book in advance. I order a great Salmon appetizer, good cocktails, the chocolate dessert was yummy.
Kumar Sivan
Visited on a Saturday evening at around 4:45 pm. They dont take reservations so it is first come, first served. We were seated right away at a table that faces the front window. Fortunately for us, about 20 minutes after we sat down, the place really started filling up and well before we left we could see dozens of people waiting for a table.
The waiter presented the specials of the day in a very professional manner and conveyed a lot of pride in what the restaurant has to offer. Too bad I am not big on fish or sea food because it seemed like every special had something to do in that department.
They had some nice bread and butter as a starter. Bread is not made in house but purchased from another business. One would expect to have in house bread in a 'French' restaurant but that was not the case. We settled for the Turkey sandwich and the Croque Monsieur. The Turkey sandwich came with a nice mixed green salad with just a hint of a dressing. The Croque Monsieur was nicely toasted, the meat was tender and there was a cheesy, mayonaissey layer on it that gave it the right amount of spice. The fries that came with the sandwich were delicious and instead of ketchup it came with a garlicy Aioli which was different and better.
They have quite the selection of french themed desserts, but we decided to go to an ice cream parlor instead as it was a 100+ degree day!
OhSheCameToEat
Food and atmosphere!!! These two things cannot be beat at Chez Fonfon. I kept hearing about the burgers and dismissed it every time. No way am I driving over an hour and eating a burger. Well I did and I don’t regret it and I’m planning on returning soon. We were greeted promptly and told there would be a short wait. The ambiance is romantic and the music was great. We sat at the bar and ordered seasonal drinks.
Shortly after finishing my drink we got our table. I had my heart set on the burger but my date had eyes for the crab cake which unfortunately wasn’t available that day so he got the burger as well.
They came out pretty quickly.
The burger was juicy, flavorful and both of them were cooked to our liking. I believe the onions were caramelized but the flavor was great. The fries were great too.
And then we ordered the coconut cake. Normally the thought of coconut on anything makes me cringe but this cake was sooo good. We ordered one slice but considered getting another. The whole meal was great, our waitress allowed us time to enjoy our meals and each other’s company which I appreciated. We plan to come back again for another date night.
Malory Thelen
This is one of my favorite ~fancy~ lunch spots in the city! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but they probably serve the best burger in town. Add an egg on top for a truly delicious experience!
Janet Kissane
Lovely place for lunch or dinner! Classy and varied menu. My friend had escargot, steak with fries, wine and a chocolate dessert. She said it was all absolutely delicious! I totally enjoyed my shrimp and avocado salad, wine and a lemon tart with a meringue topping. EXCELLENT staff, EXCELLENT suggestions from wait staff and EXCELLENT FOOD, cooked perfectly and served with a smile. You will not be disappointed!

What a wonderful experience! From the food to the atmosphere. Definitely a must come when you are in Birmingham!

Food was absolutely exquisite 👌

Absolutely delightful. Service was great. Food was delicious! Ambiance was amazing. Top notch dining right here.

Delicious, as always! Really enjoyed hanging out on the Patio. Given COVID issues, it feels safer to be outdoors, and they have set it up so that it is very pleasant.

Food was great and waiters were super nice

One of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham.
Their food is always consistent (and consistently great), they have a wonderful wine list, and their desserts are to die for--I usually buy a couple to take back to NYC when I leave.

Oh wow! Discovered this incredible gem when looking for a fun Birmingham restaurant during a business trip. Was meeting a friend who had recently moved to the area and we thought this sounded like the place to try. Well let me tell you it was! You cannot come to the Magic City and not eat here. It was fabulous. Probably the best charcuterie tray I've ever had and a frisee salad that was perfectly executed with one of the most unique warm dressings that finished the dish with aplomb. The mix of people was vibrant and eclectic. For a moment I really felt transported to a little French bistro. The wine list was wonderful and the bartender made impeccable recommendations. C'est magnifique!
Fred Becker
Wonderful dinner - again. Food was superb, every bit as good as the last time. You sometimes have concern when it's that good they won't repeat. But they have it down to ensure the food that comes out is spot on. Prices are fair, wine a bit pricy (French!) and the bill always is accurate but seems to grow more than expected as the night goes on
Jim Coleman
Great meal. We didn't have reservations, so we were seated at the bar. What a stroke of luck. The bartender was also a great waiter and prepares great cocktails. The food is very good. French Bistro food, nothing fancy -- but very, very good. Go there!!
Grace D (Miami Culinary Tours)
Absolutely superb, a trip to France without the airport hassle and craziness of today's world. I have dine at great restaurants in Paris, Chez Fonfon brings it here to the south.. We are from Miami, Florida and made special arrangements to stop here on our way to Nashville. WOW, the cuisine is perfectly executed. Service was a 10+ and the mussels one of the best ones I've ever had. Beautiful ambiance, very chic but not pretentious and super professional and hospitable team. We will be back!!
Joyce Segers
Absolutely Amazing!! My first time and I so enjoyed it!! The atmosphere is quaint, service was on point...she was so efficient...the food was delicious, and the deserts...I think I've died and went to heaven...lemon tart....OMG!! We will be back!!
Brian Lyman
Hands down one of the best restaurants in Birmingham. As a foodie, FonFon is a culinary gem that has me appreciate the high attention to the smallest detail. Excellent!
Saugertown Sauger
I am so glad they are open to dine in again. We alway love everything about our dining experiences here and this visit did not disappoint!
Bob De Hart
Best restaurant I visited in Birmingham. It is upscale but not too pricy. Beef Burgundy and fish dishes were awesome. Attentive and friendly wait staff.
Anna Hardiman
What a great find ! The service here was so wonderful! They pull your chair out for you and kindof tuck you in. The waiter was the best! He brought us some complimentary treats, and taught us a lesson about the proper way to set a table (I initially asked) We had some great laughs here The food was a unique experience, and tasted great ! We loved everything we tasted! Great experience!
Justin Greene
I was blown away how great the service and food was. The ambiance of the outdoor back area was a fantastic surprise.
Mary Wittendorfer
A friend and I were in town this week for a work conference and this past Thursday, we decided we wanted great food. We didn’t make reservations, but showed up and asked if they had any available slots for dinner. They squeezed us in and were very accommodating. The food was wonderful, and the service was great too. Our waiter and waitress both went above and beyond. Dinner here (with reservations) will be a must the next time we are in town. Couldn’t recommend it more!

Fantastic service, great food. Very nice.

Wonderful food and wine! The flavors were all on point and our sever Caroline was super sweet and very helpful and patient. The wait time is a little long, but absolutely worth it!!! Lovely place overall

Superb dining experience. I visited for a late lunch/early dinner. My group of 4 had appetizers and about 3 cocktails per person. The staff is very attentive. Courtyard dining if you want a dramatic setting and to make an impression.
Brittany Wilson
Highly recommend! The trout was incredible as was the burger and the basque cake for dessert, pure heaven!! Make sure to book a reservation well in advance.
Beth Moffett
Wonderful!! Staff were very gracious and attentive to our party of 4. We didn't realize we had stayed past closing, yet they did not hurry us off. Beautiful setting on the patio under a tent. Pecan cake and berry trifle were delish!!

Brittany May
Our family enjoyed this restaurant! It is evidently a local favorite as evidenced by the steady stream of customers. There were other families, couples, a wide age variety. The wine choices were outstanding and reasonably priced relative to the quality. The trout was excellent and all of our dishes, appetizers were outstanding. The ambiance was warm, with a golden glow and bustling atmosphere typical of a thriving French restaurant. We hope to come back to Birmingham as we found the city and its people friendly, smart and welcoming.
Keith Jackson
Great cocktails and great food. Maybe get some more chocolate desserts.
The bartenders are skilled, friendly, and not rushed. This place is kind of small, so the atmosphere is energetic and lively. You'll probably want a reservation unless you're coming in for a quick drink. Will go again.
Emory Shealy
My mom and I ate here and it was amazing. We have been several times
Sara-Margaret Hall
What can you even say about Fonfon except that it is simply the best? The servers, the food, the French bistro air, the cocktails, the wine, the desserts, the...
I have been here many many times and every visit is fantastic. If you've never been, the burger is the best in town and comes with the best fries in town. The basque cake that's been on rotation recently is insane. Think you hate escargot? I'd try these before being sure. Mussels and fries? Yum. Feeling like fries but also a salad? Get the omelette that pairs with most any wine.
Even during this wild ride of COVID Chez Fonfon is the best spot in Birmingham. Enjoy!
Erik M Hicks
We had a really great evening with our group for dinner. While waiting on the table we had cocktails and watched the staff work magic with the crowd. The staff was excellent and we finally were able to have food. The food was amazing and we all talked about returning before we left town. When we cam back the restaurant was so busy and we couldn't get in.If you are in Birmingham, AL and looking for a excellent recommendation to have dinner this is the place.
John Hunt
Anniversary lunch date was a hit. Liver pate, trout almondine, schnitzel, followed by their warm pound cake with vanilla bean sauce. Angel knew his stuff too - took good care of us!
Tys Greene
We found this French bistro on a drive to New Orleans. Made sure to dine again on the way back. A red fish special was amazing. The menu trout is also quite good. Bread is a treat. Nice cheese plate as dessert on one visit (could have used a few grapes or something). Good wine list. Very knowledgeable staff.
April L. Butler
We've been twice and have had an absolutely wonderful experience each time. Once for a date night and another for a celebration and I couldn't have chose a better place. Our server was wonderfully helpful with guiding us through the menu, though I'm not sure it's possible to make a wrong choice with any item listed. The wine selection is wonderful, as well. We selected an excellent red blend and paired it with the fish served that day, then finished up with dessert. Great atmosphere and really reasonable prices for everything considering the quality of the food, wine, and service. Thanks for making our date nights so wonderful!
Kristi Randel
My favorite fine dining in bham. Great food, (CHEESE), drinks, & desserts. We love popping in for lunch when it’s less busy. The bar is fun too. The service has been good, not great- they sort of mind their own business while tending to your needs. Definitely worth trying... or frequenting
Madeline Perkins
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham. The chicken and wine is amazing, the burger is legendary, and the desserts cannot be beat. Dolester Miles, the pastry chef, won a James beard award in 2018 for her creations for this menu. The coconut cake is remarkable, and definitely the most famous, but don’t miss the chocolate pot de creme. The atmosphere is great, and the bartenders are super nice!
Thomas Freeland, V
I have eaten here 3 times now and each time was absolutely perfect. Not even noisy for how consistently busy they are.
Tena Diliberto
Great selection! Enjoyed everything from the cocktails, appetizer, entres and dessert. We sat at the bar, but the bartender was not very friendly or attentive.

Nice experience, overall nice set up for patio dining and good service during a pandemic. It's a French inspired place, so the real french dishes were the pâté de campagne (country style was authentic to what hubby has in Normandy), rillettes de porc (both pork paste on the charcuterie board, moules (mussels), coq au vin (chicken), and escargot (surprisingly tasty). All main course meals were delicious, good mussels, trout, swordfish, and chicken. Will be back to this inspired brassiere.
Desserts: good coconut cake. The basque cake is much different in French cuisine. (Fonfon’s version is a pound cake). But the cinnamon tart was really really good (American). The baguettes are lil small. All other food was magnifique and picturesque.
Judah Sixsmith
Overall, if you've never been, the food is definitely worth a try. The prices are reasonable, the service is good, and the dining room area was clean.. Ohh and if you're not familiar with the area, parking can be a hassle but they do provide valet. We got lucky with a spot right across the street. We will definitely be back in the future when we have a bigger appetite. I would recommend this place to anyone but just with a little caveat: the staff is nice enough, the seating is limited but the food is always incredible.
Brian W. Kittrell
My favorite restaurant in Birmingham because it is absolutely the best in town! Fantastic cocktails and a menu of simple, classic French Bistro-style fare. Service is absolutely the best and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Probably also the best value for a meal in this city. This should be at the top of any “must do list” for Birmingham.
Jennie Ord
The burger was outstanding. The escargot was very good. We were there around three in the afternoon, a rather off time to eat, but they were very accommodating. The coconut cake looked very good but we were too full to eat it at the time. So, we got it to go to have later.
Haley Herfurth
Had a pleasant lunch experience at the bar. Get the burger, obviously - there's a reason everyone recommends it! Was happy to see a sancerre on the the wine-by-the-glass menu.
bo thuston
Great dinner last night with my wife and another couple. We arrived about 730 and it was packed in the bar. And of all nights only two lady bartenders but they were going at it. Three deep at the bar and we still got waited on quickly. Our waiter was nice and the food was fabulous ,as usual. Started with escargot , of course, and had the fish. Then the bill came out and I'm all smiles - it's always a great deal.

This is an example of a perfect meal. My girlfriend and I were skeptical on going here because of the mixed opinions we received from friends. We decided to give it a go. I ordered the hamburger fonfon, I read an article stating this is rated one of the best burgers in Alabama so of course I had to try it, it was fantastic. There was a lot of flavor and the burger was still juicy, wasn't dry or overcooked. My girlfriend ordered the trout with brown butter, it was phenomenal. It had a perfect crust on the outside, the sauce was outstanding as well. The only down-side to this experience was the hour wait for a table but, I highly recommend this place for a good eat, or date night.
Howard West (West)
A great find! Everything from the layout to the food has been meticulously thought out. The mirrors make it feel bigger than it really is. Very comfortable.
The food is superb. I had this appetizer with fish and pears and it was one of a kind. Worth a visit!
Sheree Hall
Delicious food and excellent service. They are known for their hamburger although I have never had it. We brought an out of town friend here who said the restaurant reminded her of one of her favorite restaurants in Paris. From her that is quite a compliment. Seating is limited. Doors open at 4:30.
Donnell Cole-Price (The Southern Homme)
I love this place. World-class!!! It’s super close to moms place and it does feel like home!!!

(5+ stars)
This is a true French cafe experience. And it’s clear that Chef Stitt had high standards for service and the menu. We had a magnificent meal and experience.
The interior is warm and welcoming and very much in a cage or bistro style. It is truly bustling. We sat just off the bar and Patrick was our server. Cocktails are well made and the wine list offers many interesting options at a variety of price points. The steak tartare is very good although I’d prefer a slightly smaller dice and a bit more acidity. The frites are as good as they get. I had the veal special and it was perfectly cold and so delicious. The trout amandine is so flavorful with a wonderful nutty hint from the brown butter. We finished with the Basque cake that is almost pudding-like in texture and so buttery delicious.
The service is impeccable. It’s clear that everyone knows they have many jobs and they operate like a finely tuned machine. There’s a lot of pride in their work and it truly shows.
Thank you!

No reservations. An hour's wait is pretty normal between 6 and 8, whether for two or for more. Bar service while you wait is very responsive and your fellow bar sitters tend to be good conversationalists. There are places to sit outside to wait if you don't want to drink and if the weather's decent. the spaces between tables are particularly generous which is unusual and helps enhance the already charming decor. The wine list is excellent. The flavor of the steak in the steak frites was outstanding and the fries were just right. The trout almandine was as good, or better, as I've had. The salad frisee was perfectly prepared-- the egg and lardons just right. The desserts are super rich-- better to compromise and share than eat a whole one after such a delicious meal. Service is very very good-- all hands on deck for the staff when it's crowded and smooth transitions. It is loud and at the same time, just a great dining experience.
Alexander Wiggins
Absolutely amazing! I was so glad I found this place. The burger is incredible and if you go while the heirloom tomato salad is in season, don't miss out. Food and drink prices are inexpensive compared to similar restaurants around town.
Kristi Pruitt
Visited on a Saturday evening at around 4:45 pm. They dont take reservations so it is first come, first served. We were seated right away at a table that faces the front window. Fortunately for us, about 20 minutes after we sat down, the place really started filling up and well before we left we could see dozens of people waiting for a table. The waiter presented the specials of the day in a very professional manner and conveyed a lot of pride in what the restaurant has to offer. Too bad I am not big on fish or sea food because it seemed like every special had something to do in that department.
William Nelson
Went to Chez Fonfon today for my 70th birthday. Drove all the way from Atlanta to Birmingham for a truly wonderful lunch with some friends . The food ( escargot, Fried oysters, and Trout, Chicken, and Croque Monsieur ) were all amazing. The menu has so many wonderful appetizers and entrees it was truly hard to decide what to order. The service was excellent, and the wait for seating was only about 10 minutes at about 1PM. . Mr Stitt was in the restaurant, and stopped at the table to say hello and Happy Birthday. I cannot wait to go back.
Milo Ipkis (Milo Space)
Every time I go to BHM I make it a point to come here. The staff is first rate. The bartenders I've had knew more about settings and placement of dishes than most waiters almost anywhere else I've been. I've taken coworkers and business associates here and everytime someone will say that's the best (fill in the blank) I've ever had. I know the Highlands next door is supposed to be one of the best, but I've yet to try it, even after 10+ meals here. I'm sure it's great as well (same owner/exec chef) but i like this place so much, I just can't walk by and not want to eat here instead.
Matthew Whitaker
My favorite restaurant in town. Reasonably priced, great food, awesome atmosphere. Perfect place to take friends or family who come in from out of town for dinner or meet someone for work at lunch. Wait staff is exceptional and knowledge of the menu. Many of them have been there for years.
lauren chodkowski
I am not from around here, but when I came to Birmingham a second time, I made a point to come here again. The burger is that good. Great cheese plate, escargot was a delight. Comfortable, high-end restaurant. Chez Fonfon, I will be back!
ericthered78
I've never had such a bad experience at Fonfon. The bartender clearly doesn't like his job. We left because he wouldn't acknowledge us. Next time I go and he's working I'll just wait for a table.
John Norris
This is my favorite restaurant regardless of price. The attention to detail is astounding, and everything on the menu is delicious. I have never, not once, left dissatisfied.
Chez Fonfon is a brasserie in a similar vein to Balthazar in NYC...only with better food and a nicer wait staff.
Beverly Lopez
Went with friends and family--several raved about it before we went. It was okay, but combining Mexican and Asian does not do it for me. I think most of the high ratings was due to the uniqueness of the place--and it is unique. It might be enjoyed by some, but I won't be back--too many good Asian and Mexican restaurants in Birmingham.
Isopherus
A wonderful restaurant. The quality of the food was impressive. The veal escalope & mushrooms à la bordelaise was incredible. My wife had the croque madame and it was executed perfectly. I highly recommend dessert. Both the chocolate pot de creme and coconut cake are so rich yet so simple and clean that its hard to describe how wonderful they are. If I had to pick anything to complain about, and its hard to complain about this restaurant, it would be the fries were very overcooked both times I've ordered them. Also i think the waitress got a little too much joy in constantly "correcting" my friends pronunciations of the meal names. I cannot wait to return here in the spring or fall to enjoy the outdoor seating and boule court.
krysta parsons
Always delicious! Went for special occasion and got there at 6:30. We had to wait for about 50 min, but the bocce court and patio out back make the wait more interesting. Had a great cotes du Rhone wine and some fantastic cheeses. Everyone's meal was beautiful and tasty as usual. The noise level was a little much during this visit, but all in all a nice visit.
Breaking in Vain
Just had the burger...the best in Birmingham, they say. I just might have to agree. The bottom bun was a bit soaked, but the meat was seasoned well & delicious. The fries were pretty good as well.
Steven Bailey
Nice environment, good food. The chairs are somewhat uncomfortable but I am 6’8 so many would not have this issue.
mjtplayer
Delicious french menu utilizing local flavors. The fried oysters with craw-fish tapenade were great! Loved it so much for lunch that we came back for dinner that same night!!
Lindi Pearson
Amazing as always! My favorite restaurant in Birmingham! Always great food, service, drinks but the back patio area is the cutest and most quaint & cozy place I've been in a while
Jennifer C.
We always have a great experience here. I have found that as time goes on they do seem to have smaller plates and higher prices. A very simple vegetarian dish was $18 and tasty but not very filling at all.
Lindsey Barlow
Still dreaming about the burger. Probably the best I've ever had. I'll ignore that I didn't get the haricot verts as requested because the fries were really good.
Sunny Wright
First class service and OF COURSE the food was fabulous!
Fernanda Félix Schwarzbeck
It was my birthday so I really wanted to have a nice dinner. I was craving for the famous coconut cake...mmm...it was dry and not as tasty as I would have thought. I had the Coq Au Vin which was salty and plain at the same time, plus it was not that hot. My husband had the chimichurri steak or something like that, it was OK but nothing to die for. Our server was very nice.
Kaitlin Slattery
A little piece of France in Birmingham! Perfectly sized menu- not too overwhelming and every single dish is done well. Our current favorite offerings are the Hamburger Fonfon with comté & pommes frites and Omelette with onions, comté & cherry tomatoes! Although I don't remember what wine we received- the waiter did an incredible job of suggesting a pairing and it was delicious. We will definitely be back again.
Phil Neri
Nice restaurant with excellent service and fantastic food. I would recommend the Hamburger Fonfon or one of their seasonal dishes. The lemon meringue tart is an excellent dessert.
Seale Broughton
Great food , great patio service
LINDA LEE
Restaurant was recommended by a friend!!! So glad she did
It was great.
Aaron Mowery
Great dinner. They don't take reservations so be ready to wait an hour+. Part of the experience & worth the wait. Great little place with excellent food, service, & people watching. Highly recommend for a date night.
Morgan Jones Johnston
My absolute favorite restaurant in the world (and it happens to be in my own city, what luck!). It feels like you're in a Parisian brasserie, and the patio is the most transportive spot in Birmingham (bonjour South of France vibe!). Favorite dishes include the burger and frites, chicken liver mousse, the charcuterie platter. Best cocktails in town. And they are SOOOOOOO accommodating for special dietary needs.
Sarah Kohl
The food was good, but the real prize here are the desserts. We ordered one of each and shared, but I wish I had one of each for myself! My biggest complaint was the actual seating which was slightly uncomfortable.
Jackson Degges
I sat at the bar and Jess suggested trying a special of salmon soup. I paired that with the arugula, beet, and Wabash Cannonball salad. I followed with the escargot dish and finished with a strawberry trifle. I had an amazing dining experience. Jess did an outstanding job answering any questiofxxxrns and walkijg me through the menu. From the pacing to the flavors and the portion sizes, every part of the meal was executed flawlessly.
xyboy2000
awesome food. awesome drinks, awesome scene. And, hands down the BEST burger that I've ever had in my life
Sharlene Scheller
Wonderful experience, flavorful and creative dishes
L. Warren Munroe
The accommodating and well-versed waiter was the highlight of this, my first visit. Crab cake was not chunk crab meat but seemed perhaps canned, not sauted as promised, but fried and greasy. Several red potato pieces were almost raw mixed with cooked pieces. Asparagus was tiny and overcooked. Coconut cake was essentially sugar, dense and tasteless. Decaf coffee was excellent along with our service. Will try again based on others raves but....
Ashton Rowcliffe
Che Fon Fon is a restaurant to go when visiting Birmingham downtown/Five Points area. The food is excellent, the menu has a good variety. The staff is always very friendly and helpful, weather you need recommendations or not. The restaurant is always crowded, I would advise, to go early or very late, if you don‘t want to wait a long time. Since the restaurant is always fully booked, it can be a little bit too loud. If you are looking for a quite place, you shouldn‘t go there on Friday or Saturday night.
David Grusin
The Fon is not just a restaurant, it is
an experience. Going to the Fon is
like going to a great restaurant in a large
city. The service is extremely attentive,
knowledgeable, and they give you the
feeling that they are enjoying what they
are doing, and that they truly want you
to enjoy and appreciate your time
there. There is not a bad item on the
menu.....and don't forget a little desert.
One of the few places everyone rates
a 5 by 5 !!
Victoria Evans
Excellent food and atmosphere. Outstanding service. Covid precautions followed well. Please do not skip the bread and butter! Highly recommend.
Joshua Burnett
Probably one of the best burgers I have had...
Landon Whatley
You won’t come across a better restaurant in Birmingham! Authentic French. Everything on the menu is to die for. Best coconut cake you will ever taste, whether you’re a coconut fan or not.
Omid Ebrahimi-Sohi
Chez Fonfon is phenomenal. The food was amazing. From the appetizers, fries, fish, and chocolate mousse...all worth it. Highly recommended. It is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Birmingham.
Karen Becker
Our new favorite restaurant in Birmingham! Our second visit and the food was amazing both times. Very attentive and helpful staff as well.
Margaret Hahn
We had a great time at Chez Fonfon! The place was packed; we put in our name and grabbed a drink at Highland next door; the maitre-d came over to fetch us when our table was ready. Great service! The place is well decorated, with a parisian feel, with high tin ceilings and a lovely vintage bar.
The sparkling rose on the menu was crisp, dry, and delicious. We started with the mussels, which were great and authentic. The Coq au Vin was delicious; I wiped the plate with their bread. The creme brulee was nice, with a carmalized top and a sweet cool custard underneath.
I would highly recommend stopping by for dinner, drinks, or just desert.
John J
Two of us had crab cakes, and two of us had swordfish. We all left talking about how good it was. The service was impeccable as well.
N Ward
This place is amazing. There's valet and the atmosphere here is cozy quaint yet sophisticated. The building is old which adds to its charm and the food is to die for! I recommend the trout. Def try whatever the special is.
MEREM Health
My personal favorite Stitt restaurant. The absolute standard for escargot is at this establishment, an exceptional wine list, and the best burger in Birmingham...this is a not to miss when in town!
David Winge
Our favorite restaurant in Birmingham. Never disappoints - great service & excellent specials. Tonight Sheephead was fantastic. Also Chez Fonfon has the best cheeseburger in town.
Susan Benton (30A EATS)
My favorite place to dine in Birmingham,AL. Always takes me back to Provence and dining in the bistros there. Delectable food, love the atmosphere, great service!
Joseph Drwiega
The food is wonderful. It's not high brow French cuisine, but the hearty meals are high quality and full of flavor. I refrained from 5 stars because the noise level is higher than I prefer.
Abe Tau
The food was good, but not as good as others claim to be. It's a nice and safe dating place. I'd go there everyday for lunch if it weren't for the prices, but mainly the long waiting lines. It's like Chipotle of fine dining.
Tom Brander
As with other Frank Stitt establishments predictably excellent. Modeled on a French Bistro. Good food, some what informal, lively bar scene. No reservations so timing is everything for arriving if you don't want to wait..
Beth Lawyer
The burger is delicious ! Love the atmosphere & wonderful customer service as well! Highly recommend this restaurant if you’re in the Birmingham area.
WENDY CHAN
Great place to eat. Food is very delicious with excellent service 😋. if you have never been there, go and try. It will be exceeding your expectations but not broken your bank. …
Kel Li
I've always heard/read great things about Chez Fonfon & after visiting, I have the same opinions. The service wasn't too great but the meals were delicious! Everything was made to perfection! Although it is a little pricey, I think it is a perfect place to have a special date :)
Maui No Ka Oi
Had a beautiful dinner with my wife yesterday! The service and food was impeccable. Thank you Chez Fonfon for yet another amazing experience.

Ferne McClintock
So good to be back at one of our favorite lunch places. We ate outside, in back, and it was wonderful. Excellent food, excellent service.
melanie mccraney
The food, atmosphere and service are consistently excellent. A table on the patio by the bocce ball court out back is a wonderful spot to kick back and enjoy one of Birmingham's best restaurants
Kierdog kier dog
Fantastic from start to end. Ordered the steak and fries. Over the top! Even though the place was jamming we received prompt and friendly service. Will be back. Well done!
Sharon Tucker
Liked it. Server was very informative. Though the food is good, I think it's a little over priced for what you get. However, I would go back again.
Greg Taylor
Have enjoyed every time we have ate at Chez FonFon. Our favorite was sitting at the bar where we were treated to soft boiled eggs from Frank's farm. Highly recommend!
Chris Golden
We did try a,couple of new things; The Chicken Liver Moose Pâté as with all the other items paired with an exquisite bottle French Bordeaux was deliciously self indulgent. Four of us gathered on this Special Occasion at Chez Fonfon for another Devine Experience. The Fresh Catch, Halibut was delightfully tender and delicious.
Lea 'lee lee' Taylor Florida RE Agent
Best time ever. Great service, young man Kyle Berman was an oustanding waiter! Food he recommends was delicious too. 👏 to the chef. I will be returning here. …
Lukas Carullo
Very relaxed and beautiful restaurant. The service was excellent! The menu has obviously a French touch but you'll also find local cuisine. Definitely worth a try!
Mary O'Brien
I am not sure how I was lucky enough to find this spot, but find it we did. We traveled from Dallas, over 9 hours, and stayed at the Highlands at 5 point; walking distance to Chez Fonfon. We waited an hour and a half for a table, maybe 15 minutes less, and it was worth every minute. The setting is authentically French, the service impeccable and the food sublime. The chicken liver mousse was to die for, my trout almondine was perfect, croque monsieur and madames did not disappoint, in a word; go. My husband and I were travelling with our 19, 16 and 10 year old, and they all loved this spot. We will definitely be back next year!
Emma Tanner
Very pretty french vibes, although our food was salty. Idk but maybe touch base with the chef? Otherwise, awesome!!
SeantheSwede

Amazing spot. Had the duck Saturday special and it was cooked and spiced just right.

The food was superb! The charcuterie tray was a great appetizer for the table. It is a little noisy. Great place to eat.
