Reviews of Bright Star Restaurant
Tiffany Vaughn
We celebrated our 22 year wedding anniversary on April 1st at The Bright Star. They were moderately busy. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. The staff was welcoming and our waitress was very friendly.
Several things happened while we were there that were customer-related and the staff handled them well. A man fell out of his chair as he slid back away from his table to stand up. Our waitress and several others ran to help him. Our waitress also had an issue with another table's food and the owner came out and took our order so she could tend to her other table. It was a great display of good management and the owner being willing to do what is needed to help his customers and his staff.
The last time we ate at The Bright Star was more than 15 years ago. They offer old-world charm with traditional Greek-style options and an updated menu that blends old and new. The cocktails from the bar were delivered promptly and were perfectly delicious. I had the Texas peach martini that was decorated with a fresh jalapeno Alice, and my husband had a whiskey sour.
We highly recommend The Bright Star.

My husband and I had reservations for 2 and when we arrived we didn't have to wait to be seated. The service was great . I ordered the platter sampler which came with a juicy Greek style Chicken, Tender Tenderloin, and mouth watering Greek style Snapper. I had the sweet potato as my side and it also came with Gumbo and bread. The Gumbo was delicious and had the right amount of heat to it. My husband ordered the Stuffed Snapper and a baked potato and Gumbo. I tasted his Snapper and it was very tasty and came with a creamy sauce. ALL of the food was Bursting with FLAVOR. Overall we had a great experience and would definitely go back for sure.

First time visiting Bright Star Restaurant and it certainly won't be our last time. I can't believe in the 7 years we've lived in the Birmingham AL area that we hadn't visited this historic restaurant. Everything we had was amazing, our waitress was top notch, and it was just such a cool place to be. Make sure to take a few minutes and see all the pictures and articles on the walls, showing a little history of this place. The original murals and marble only adds to the historic value of the Bright Star. Can't wait to go back again!

Visited the Bright Star today and I absolutely had the best food, waiter, and just a nice time. I recommend going and having peanut butter pie. Everything was perfect truly enjoyed myself. Also it has alot of history painted on the walls. Alot of sports cover the walls. Truly a nice spot to check out. I had a wonderful experience. And absolutely recommend going. The food was hot n fresh n alot for the money. I took food home there was so much on my plate. Thanks for the experience Bright Star we truly enjoyed ourselves. 😉

What an iconic place to dine. Established in 1905. Food was outstanding. Try the snapper throats and an appetizer of fried claws. Service was great. Had the privilege of sitting at the legendary Bear Bryant's table. He was a regular.

We came up from Biloxi and went to Tannehill state park. A man who worked there told us we had to check out this place. I'm so glad he did! We had no idea what to expect, but this place is amazing! Its been there since 1915..the oldest restaurant in Alabama. They play 40s and 50s style music. I ordered the fried snapper throats and she had the bacon wrapped filet. The snapper was just falling apart it was so tender. I had to try her filet and it was incredible! The zucchini and squash was delicious as was the baked potato. I got some bread pudding to go and it was delicious! Our waitress was Stephanie and was extremely nice! If we are ever back in the area..this is definitely the first stop!

Classic, oldest in AL, etc... growing up in Tuscaloosa I'd always heard about it and finally had a meal here for dad's birthday.
I would compare it to a "fancy & cleaner" version of City Cafe. YMMV.

First day in town and so glad Bright Star was our lunch destination. It was everything I love in a restaurant - local family owned, rich in history, with amazing food. It was perfect for our business lunch but I could definitely see coming here with friends, family or colleagues for a variety of occasions. Everyone was friendly and hospitable and the whole experience was just lovely.

A certified American Classic in historic downtown Bessemer, Alabama! This huge restaurant serves up a delectable assortment of gulf coast seafood, delicious Alabamian steaks, southern classics, and Greek inspired dishes. Fried green tomatoes, gumbo, snapper, and steaks are all standouts as well as their amazing icebox pies. Service is exceedingly friendly and fast, full of southern hospitality. The decor is classic American elegance with hand painted murals throughout, a real sight to behold! If you are in the Birmingham or Bessemer area be sure to pay a visit to this American classic!

Very cool place. I believe it's the oldest or one of the oldest in the state. Interesting atmosphere, variety of foods, great desserts.

Held our Christmas party in the banquet room and it was wonderful! Staff was so attentive and food was amazing! I had the pan seared salmon. One of the best pieces of fish I've ever had! Thank you Bright Star for a great experience!

Recently went here with my husband and his parents. Between all of us we had the ribeye, filet mignon, and the seafood for 2. Everything was delicious! We couldn't help but share bites of everyone's plate! We went on a Friday evening with a reservation at 7pm. It was pretty busy, so the reservation helped. The wait staff were REALLY sweet, and perfectly professional without losing any of their sweet southern charm! They had a "half-off bottle of wine" list that was wonderful! We shared a bottle of rosé. The price was decent for an upscale eatery (no dress code though, so that was nice lol). I would definitely recommend and will be going again!!
eunice spitzley
The bright star was great as usual. We had a group Christmas party and couldn't be happier. The service and food were excellent!
Christa Lodico
Always a treat to eat here. Definitely worth the drive. The only disappointing thing is they changed their french fries to Frozen ones from the hand cut. Other than that everything was on point and always amazing

After living in the Birmingham area for over 25 years and never going here, I met my parents here for lunch when they came to visit. I had the Fried Oyster and they each had the Fried Jumbo Shrimp! 😋😋😋 …

I had heard of this restaurant for years, and finally was able to go. I can honestly say it was fabulous. My wife and I are both lovers of good food, and Bright Star is a place we will certainly go back to, even with it being 110 miles away. Not only was the food great, but the service was great, and the nostalgic decor added to the experience. If we didn't live so far away, we would visit at least once a month.
Elaine Lambros
Food was ok. Of the four if us, three of us were not thrilled with what we ordered. I imagine in its heyday, it was amazing. Menu needs updating. The lemon pie and bread pudding were to die for. It's definitely an historical landmark. Their server, Linda, is incredible. She's so friendly and helpful and great to talk with.
otis mobley
I really enjoyed my food and the service was A1 if u haven't been to Bright Star yet you should.

Can’t rave about this place more! I’ve driven by it quite a few times and heard great things. My boyfriend and I decided to try it last night for a date night. This place is HUGE and gorgeous! I love the fact it has been open for over 100 years. The stained glass is so cool to look at.
We started with an appetizer of Greek style oysters. Ummm yummm so flavorful and delicious! I ordered the broiled seafood platter w/ a sweet potato and gumbo soup. The seafood platter comes with 1 crab cake, 1 filet of fish, oysters, scallops and shrimp. I had it made Greek style that was offered on the side. My boyfriend had the same thing except he got the fried seafood platter and a baked potato. The gumbo has a bit of a kick and we loved it!
We never get dessert but decided to. I ordered the baklava cheesecake and my boyfriend ordered bananas foster. The bananas foster comes with ice cream and it’s layered with caramel, bananas and whipped cream. So delicious! I LOVE baklava and cheesecake so the combination is a no brainer. It is a must try!
Our waitress was amazing! We were apparently extremely thirsty camels last night as she kept refilling our beverages. She chatted with us a bit about certain things but she was very attentive and on top everything. She even had 2 large parties and a few small tables but she didn’t miss a beat.
I’ve officially decided I’m taking my out of town guests here for their birthdays in September. Can’t wait to go back and try more of their amazing food!

Lunch for two, fiftieth wedding lunch. Food was delicious! Salmon and veggies. Old historic building. Great service. Worth the trip. Significantly more expensive at night. Worth the trip!!

(Submitted with full awareness that this may cut against the grain.) I found out about Bright Star from an interesting online article I received the day prior and, while passing through, decided to detour and check it out. BLUF: You're paying for the experience of dining at an institution of historic significance and should try it out for what it is, however, it is overpriced, food was over/undercooked and allowed to sit too long, and service is lacking at best... far from the "high class" you may read from others. The food was on the low side of decent but the history of the establishment garners favor from cattle farmers and the James Beard organizations. We enjoyed the experience of learning about Bright Star, but quickly tired of eating substandardly-prepared selections - Texas Special (hot potato, hard and dry room temp fish and Crabmeat Au Gratin, perfectly-cooked and flavorful but lukewarm tenderloin), Stuffed Snapper (lukewarm and dry), Fried Seafood Platter (soft/doughy and lukewarm) - none finished (photos edited). Each plate deserved to be returned. After reading the history on the placemat and taking in the atmosphere, fresh bread and delicious salads, it was downhill until the Bread Pudding & Baklava Cheesecake came which we took to-go because we just wanted to get out of there. All said, our server was horrible from the approach and our opinions may have been slightly more favorable but, ultimately, miscooked lukewarm food killed it. They had a good flow of people and I can appreciate the pride locals may have but this type of experience wouldn't cut it in larger, more sophisticated markets. Great presentation; could be 5 star with quality adjustments in service and delivery. Two adults, one teen, $160 including modest tip, and a doggie bag that will likely go out to whatever resides in the woods behind my house. Box checked; based on this single experience, it is recommended for the history, not the food.

It's been a long time since I've been to the bright star restaurant. Was passing the Bessemer today so I decided to stop being to eat tonight. There was a very long wait to get into reservations are recommended if you know in advance you're going. The food was great tonight I had the Snapper and shrimp special. I think the grand lemon Martini was the best

I have always loved eating at the Bright Star. The past two times I have eaten there it has been so disappointing.
My last visit the hostess sat us without leaving menus. After 10 mins I finally flagged a waiter down and asked for menus. Our server, Peyton was excellent, the food was not. The fried crab claws were over cooked, dried out and cold. Also the serving was smaller from all the past times I have ordered. My aunt got the fried snapper throats which were also over cooked. The sides were good.
The time before the food took a very long time to be served and when it was served it was cold. The service was awful.
Spencer Plasse
The Bright Star is an extremely well-known restaurant throughout Alabama, for good reason. You can’t beat the Bright Star experience. The service is wonderful, every item on the menu is delicious, and the environment is very unique.
I have been around 5 times now and almost always get the Stuffed Snapper. It is absolutely fantastic. This past time, I tried the seafood gumbo as well. It is great too. The rest of my family didn’t think it was true gumbo because it wasn’t very “seafood-y” due to being made with light fish, but it is worth a try.
Not pictured in this review is their famous bread pudding. It is easily the best bread pudding and probably the best dessert period that I’ve ever had. They unfortunately did not have any when I went, which was disappointing, but when they have it, it is a MUST try!
If you are ever anywhere near Birmingham, AL, try the Bright Star. Even if you aren’t, it is well worth the drive. It can be very pricey but you pay for more than just the food - you pay for an unbeatable experience.

The Bright Star is a long-time favorite of ours. We had lunch at the Bright Star again yesterday because we were in Birmingham and near Bessemer. The food, the atmosphere, the service, and the overall experience is always wonderful. I have been going to this restaurant since I was a child and I hope to be able to go from time to time from now on.

We had a wonderful Birthday dinner for our sister Saturday night-8-27. The food was incredible , so good. And Brett H. took excellent care of us. The Bright Star is a great place. Highly recommend .
John McDole
Everything from our reservation text reminders to the service was exceptional and professional. Our server Brett H. was prompt and attentive, his timing was just right. The food was as expected excellent as always. This visit was a special occasion and Bright Star helped make it extra special.

Go early. We made the mistake of going after 2pm. Everything was great, except for my snapper throats. I love them but they tasted like that had been out of the fryer for 20 minutes. Just barely warm. Everything else was excellent. This is the first time this has happened. Definitely give this restaurant a try. This is the first time it has ever happened. The eggplant parm side is great and salad are always cold and fresh.

My first visit, and I certainly hope it will not be the last. I was greeted very warmly at the front hostess stand, even without a reservation. Was seated very quickly and the service remained outstanding all evening. The waitress's recommendations were outstanding, food very well prepared and all for an extremely reasonable price. I stayed with all fish, and was not disappointed.
Kathi Edwards
The experience was actually great. 5 out of 9 ordered chicken fried steak later to learn they were out. The waitress was a little green but it is worth a return visit.
Tracie Pate
Linda was our server and we had a table of 10 and she was amazing!! So nice and fast. She made sure we had plenty of refills and we got everything!! My favorite is the lobster & crabmeat au gratin!!

One of the finest dining establishments in The Yellowhammer State. Lots of history. Immaculately clean. Outstanding service. Top flight food. Somebody who's anybody and even a few nobody's in the Greater Birmingham area have frequented this place since opening its doors somewhere around the turn of the 20th century. Highly reccomended.

While in town for a family member's funeral I visited Bright Star twice. Once personally and again as guest of my aunt to show hospitality to those attending the funeral. Bright Star rose to the occasion beautifully. Thank you.
Randy Earl
A very pleasant atmosphere and good food. As one with Celiac disease, I was very pleased that our server was well aware of gluten free needs and was very helpful in selecting menu items I could eat and what modifications they could make.
Gerald Barber
We loved it! I have lived in Birmingham my whole life and never been to this restaurant. The food was great and the service.
Kleine Douglas
Met the owner, he has been running the restaurant since 1968. Very nice man. Food, service an atmosphere was over the top. Very pleased.

One of my all-time favorite restaurants. This place is a true gem. It's not a small place by any means but it feels very intimate. The lighting is perfect. I always have steak or fish when I visit. I'll often order the trio that comes with another dish as well. If you like dessert, everything on Bright Star's dessert menu is to die for. I'll often only eat a few bites of my entree and take most of it home just so I can enjoy one of their delicious desserts. If you've never been here, you're really missing out. I dare anyone to try it and not go back a second and third time.

This was our first visit. I'm in love with this place. The history, the food, and the staff are all wonderful. I had the country fried steak, fried okra, rice and spinach casserole, and pickled beets. My boyfriend had country fried steak, okra, and mashed potatoes with gravy. We ordered peanut butter pie and lemon pie for dessert. The restaurant ambassador came to our table and talked with us and showed us the Alabama room. What a delightful lady. I truly enjoyed talking with her. I highly recommend the Bright Star.

1st time visitors while visiting a relative at UAB hospital. We had lunch on Saturday, Jan 28. Wife's salmon was over cooked and dry, greek potatoes and mac & cheese. Our waitress recommended the salmon when asked. But otherwise could have cared less about good service or checking back with us during our meal. I had the snapper throats with greens (both good) and a small greek salad to cover 2 more sides due (meat & 3). My salad was lacking as far as greek salads go, and the waitress charged me a full upcharge even though she acknowledged my swap out of 2 for 1. Bright Star's shine was dulled the day we went and did not live up to their reputation or online reviews for us.
Jim Crim
Food is still good, but portion size was down a bit. They still have a strong willingness to be sure your dining experience is a good one.
Robert Duke
The menu is delightful. The food is very well prepared and delicious. The service was excellent. They set the bar very high for other restaurants. The decor is beautiful. We really enjoyed our lunch there!
Cory Windorff
Excellent place for som great home cooking. The building and the restaurant are historic and largely original. I tried some the seafood gumbo which was quite nice. For the main dish I got the Greek style snapper, very simple with a light taste. The sides were delicious. I really enjoyed everything about this place!
Gina T.
We attended a Christmas luncheon. The beef tenderloin, greek chicken & greek snapper were delicious. The pies are always fabulous!
Jeff Crabtree
This place is popular and has been in business for over 100 years for a reason.
Lots of historical photos throughout and the facilities are well maintained and renovated for a building its age. Can't wait to go back.
Stephanie ford
Wonderful service and delicious food. I felt like I was eating at someone's grandma's house. I could taste the love in the collard greens, candied yams, and beef tenderloin tops♡♡ it was amazing. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy. 10/10 would recommend
Chris and Beth M
It lived up to my expectations! We went for Saturday lunch and had great food and good service. There were a lot of big parties and we were one of them. The Greek Style seafood is recommended.
doc
It was wonderful. It has not been around since 1907 for nothing.Steaks and seafood were delicious.Must go before you die.

Oh my goodness, this place is awesome. Built & and started in 1915. Great atmosphere and fantastic food! In the center of Bessemer, Alabama - no place like it in the area. You must try the stuffed snapper - Wow! I'll return for sure!
Charles Bernhard
Waitress was lovely & took pictures of our group of 9. All the food was excellent. No complaints that I heard. Loved my trout almondine! It has been a long time since we went there but we will go again soon!
Genevieve Cooke
Our group of 17 motorcycle enthusiasts met at the Bright Star for a Meet 'n Greet. We were seated in a quiet area near the back and treated like royalty by Linda, waitress extraordinaire. Everything on the menu is delicious, but save room for dessert! Needless to say, we'll be back.
Jimmy Wall

One of my favorite restaurants in the world. I have eaten all over the world, but nowhere is more consistent than the BS. Lee is the best waitress I have ever had, and she provides the best experience for my family and friends.

A laid back and everything is cooked to perfection kind if place. Make sure to get the fried green tomatoe appetizers. I've had about everything on the menu and it's all great. Alabama's oldest restaurant.
Wayne Wright
Iconic!! Historical!! Original!! Loved this place all my life. And only got to go a handful of times. It is simply a special place filled with ambiance if bygone days. And simply delicious food! Cannot find better service or hospitality.

Daniel Baker
Our waitress was awesome and her name was Autumn and she had some help and her name was Emma. The food was great as well.
Neal Champion
Great food and great service which has been the standard for every visit I have made here.
Lee Elm
Opening in 1907, this is Alabama's oldest restaurant. Get the fried snapper throats, with your choice of about a dozen fresh vegetables on the side. Started by Greek immigrants, and still operated by the Koikos family, the seafood- heavy menu has several Greek-inspired dishes.
Joseph F
Absolutely first rate. Make a reservation though. Seafood is fresh. Chocolate almond pie is well worth the extra miles on the exercise bike!
John Roger Earle
Excellent. Always consistly the best place to eat in Bessemer hands down. Recommend the The Greek Tenderloin w Greek Salad.
Tammy Adkins
My family and I love to eat at The Bright Star Restaurant. The food is amazing and the staff is top notch. It's a must to try their fried crab claws! You will not be disappointed!! ❤

The food and service was great..... I've lived in Alabama for 20yrs had never gone.... i finally did.... it was great Roll Tide !!!!!
Paul Street
The Greek Style Tenderloin Steak is the best steak I have eaten. The fried crab claws are a delicious appetizer. The restaurant is a step back in time with an ambience of early 20th century. I would highly recommend eating here if you are in the Bessemer, Alabama area.
Eugene
Omg!!! The Tarter sauce ( i know what a way to start a review) is amazing!!! Eat it by the pound if you could. Also thier cheesey garlic sauce id the Bomb!!! Dip anything and everything into either of these 2 suaces and its going to be terrific!! The food itself is also very fresh and tasty. They have a lot of history and are still family owned and very much proud. The location must have changed over the years, as its a little hood, but dont be scares they have parking! Defenitly worth a visit frequently.

Lobster & Crab Au Gratin is Amazing!! Our server Jack was great.
Carina Ashurst

Mike Reuter

Alabama's oldest restaurant... Good food and service...
Ladd MacDavid
We were a party of 16 with reservations. We were shown to our private dining area and treated graciously from start to finish. The meals were excellent. That goes without saying at the Bright Star. Several of our group had never been there before. They were delighted with the food and presentation and the always present, genuine hospitality of Jimmy and Nicky Koikos.
kristie doyle
Our server was great! We sat in the Nick Saban booth and we were very please with our experience. We were torn between the peanut butter pie and the baklava... so we ordered the baklava and our sweet server felt that we still needed to try the peanut butter and brought us a complementary piece. *so sweet of him* 5 star experience for sure.
Patricia Karg
Wonderful lunch with great friends! Food was excellent.
Celeste Lambert
It was the first time I took my friend there. He is very picky about food. He had the Broiled Snapper and I had the Snapper Almondine. Every bite was delicious. I even got a Lemon Icebox pie. Fantastic Everyone in the south should come and try this restaurant. It's been in business since 1907. They must be doing something right.
Dogis happy
Food was great, but I didn't like my server. She tried to charge me full price for a cup of gumbo when the menu has right on it the price to substitute your side.
Freddy Edgerton
Really good food. Service was outstanding. Great historical place, neat pictures everywhere. Went there for a birthday party.
David Hensley
I travel a lot and this is one of the most incredible gems I have stumbled across. The food is incredible and wrought with tradition and quality. The history in the building adds an unparalleled magic and sense of awe and wonder.
P.J. V.
This is one of the most friendly and hospitable places in the Bessemer area. A must stop dining experience. Extremely friendly staff, clean, food Greek elegance, with southern favorites. They run out of Throats early. Don’t pass this up. Family friendly, clean restrooms.
Susan Holtzclaw
Dissapointed when we got there at 4:30 on Mothers Day and we’re seated and we were told that the Mothers Day menu was no longer available. No where did it say that it did not last for the entire day of Mothets Day. We ordered off the regular menu and the food was, in our opinion average. Breading on catfish was very thick and full of dough. The veal was lukewarm. The server was nice, yet busy. One in our party ordered a beer and they were out of the three choices that he asked for. I realize this was a very busy day for them, but, we were very dissapointed.
Jon Clare
We stopped at the Bright Star while in town on a golf trip. We enjoyed the delicious food, southern hospitality and learning about the history of the restaurant. The owners and staff were genuinely nice people. Highlights of the meal were the seafood gumbo, Greek style beef tenderloin and snapper, and lemon meringue pie. I can certainly understand why the Greek style beef is award winning. Can't recommend this restaurant enough!

I’ve been a fan for over 35 years, been here for lunch and dinner, love the place, the decor is very special. This was the most special restaurant that my wife and I had, I still enjoy eating here although she is no longer here, I’m retired now but still drive over a hundred miles one way to eat here at least once a month. Food and service out of this world, never had a bad experience/meal here, love the steaks but the Snapper Throats are addictive. Love y’all !!! Roll Tide
Mary Jenkins
It's been 2 days since I've eaten here and I'm still thinking about that beef tenderloin. 🤤 An absolute must.

This place is a classic. Everything from the bread to desert is delicious. Our server,Linda, brought out a "special" bread dip she invented and it was phenomenal. Our party of five left stuffed and satisfied. You will NEVER go wrong dining here!!!
Paula Graham
Great Food and Service! Best Restaurant by far for Dinner or Lunch in the Birmingham area! It has 5 Star food! The Filet Mignon, Greek Seafood and Red Snapper Throats are just a few of my favorites! All Gulf Seafood is delivered fresh daily! The restaurant is located in a well lit part of Historic Bessemer, AL and was Paul "Bear" Bryant's (Roll Tide) favorite restaurant! They also offer homemade desserts, try the bread pudding, is yummy! Lunch is served with southern-style cooked Meats, Veg's, and Crispy Greek salads. It's truly a favorite place for fine dining and lunch. Least I forget, it's a Great Historical Restaurant!
angelia steward
I love this place. Great food and service
Roger Hoover
Absolutely wonderful! Had privilege of dining in Bear Bryant's booth. Great steak; gumbo very good, as was dessert. Great service, server had been there 27 years. Also met chef and owner. If in the area, go there.
posie Adams
Hostess and waitress were not friendly the hostess seated 4 men behind us rather than seat us first she apologized but it didn't make me feel better.
Robert Orange
Arrived to join a crowd, wait was about 30 minutes. Foods was tasty like I remembered from the 70-90s. They have expanded since I was a regular dinner. Enjoyed my visit and my memories were nostalgic and brought a smile to my face. I'll be back!
Kevin Gardner
Awesome diamond on the rough in Bessemer. Great food and a cozy, warm stmosphere. Great food and outstanding pies!
Jamey Grammer
First visit ever yesterday for a party of 25. All I can say is wow. It exceeded my expectations. The service was by far the best Ive ever seen. Our waiter was non stop on the move and excellent. The greek chicken I ordered was fall off the bone tender. You could literally push your finger through it and push the bones out the other side and it was OH SO GOOD. The sides were great as was the lemon pie. Will definitely have to enjoy this experience again. QUALITY and EXCELLENCE is all I can say.
Connie Ballard
We havent been here in 30 years or so and decided to stop in on our way back to cullman. i have to say that its still as good as ever. I had the special and he had the stuffed shrimp we both sampled each others and they were excellent i wont even start on how great the bread pudding is. Its a great place for great food and service always with a smile. Cant wait to come back down this way again we will diffently be stopping in again. Great times and great memories for us in this place
Ceandra “Cece” Hill
I’ve heard so many great things about the Bright Star restaurant and I am so glad I finally tried. My mom and I went on Mother’s Day and we enjoyed everything on our plate. The gumbo was very delicious!! Our food was fresh and hot when the waitress brought it out. Everyone in the staff was very kind and customer oriented from arriving to leaving. The owner was very kind and made sure our service was top notch. Definitely try this restaurant and you will not be disappointed!!
Stacey Sims
It was worth the trip Red Snapper was delicious and I enjoyed seeing my family members. The staff was great.
Angelia Downs
Went to this restaurant for my birthday yesterday. It was awesome. Table was large and uncrowded. Booth was semi-private so it was easy to converse. The ambiance was so nice. And the food, oh my goodness, it was delish! I got the Texas special with steak and red snapper. The fish was even better than the steak! The servers were busy but they kept up with ease and were very friendly and competent.
Irene Johnson
There for brunch celebrating a graduation....looked forward to the snapper throats, was a favorite in the past, but they were served not even room temperature...service was great though
Max Jay Weston
Excellent service and food. Definitely high end quisen and worth every penny; service is second to none; highly recommend!
Sherrie F
A historic gem! Food is always fantastic & service is impeccable.
Bryant Smith
Let me start by saying that I'm a big person and I love to eat so what I'm saying is don't do the takeout sit in and eat because you might just get more food on your plate than the takeout plates 🤦smh.
She Outchea
Was with a large party. Our waitress was very nice but there should been more than one waitress. My catfish could have been cooked more but other than that I enjoyed my visit!
Josh Smith (Shaolin)
Coming here for years. Snapper almondine hasn't changed a bit! great food.
Jefferey Wills
Food quality was good but the flavor was off.
Daniel White
I have been here several times and this place is only good for one thing, nostalgia. The food is over priced and the menu could use updating. I understand that this is one of the oldest restaurants in Alabma and you don't want to ruin a good thing, but you have to keep up with the times a little. The problem with making changes though is you may loose your existing clientele who are good with things the way they are. In an economicy downtrodden area like Bessemer there aren't a lot if new customers coming to town. In short, if you have been to the Bright Star and enjoy it keep going; if you have never been and are expecting a new and great experience you may want to lower your expectations a little and enjoy it for what it is.
Mark Simpson
Take a step back to a time when high quality food and great service with a family atmosphere means something! This may be one of the only places that you might find all three!
Puggy Paul
Bright Star restaurant is the oldest restaurant in Alabama. It has fresh seafood, steaks and chicken that will make your mouth water. Service is fantastic and the food is mouthwatering.
bill williamson
I am Bill Williamson. Amazon Freight Partner. I move Amazon Trailers from one fulfillment center to another. Today my 34 hour bloc of 9 stops that originated in Jacksonville Florida ended in Bessemer Amazon Fulfillment Center. Searching for a good family style restaurant experience nearby.
Friends you all owe it to you and your circle of friends and family to visit here. This fine place is a Legendary experience. The lemon icebox pie alone is worth your time and effort. My server Heather provided prompt courteous attention to all my needs.
Tell em Bill Williamson sent you! They know me as 'sweet thing'.Lol.
Jim Record
The oldest restaurant in Alabama. The Bright Star in Bessemer continues the tradition today of serving great dishes including some a Greek ones like Greek Snapper and other dishes. The Bright Star never disappoints for
Lunch or Dinner. One of my favorites.
Tipalias Hamilton
The food was good. Had a good time at this place. I'll be back soon...
Dane Creel
Excellent food, great service, and a lovely atmosphere!
Keith Westrich
A classic old school Alabama restaurant. Loved the atmosphere and the food. Our server was awful!
Jason Whitehurst
Beautiful and delicious historic restaurant. A must if you're in Birmingham
Justin McKenzie
Great service, delicious food, beautiful historic place.
Lee Burchfield
It's still great. We had a couple of minor snags with the service or it would have been 5 stars. Just great food.
Greg Hand
Always a great pleasure to dine at the Bright Star. Mr. Nicky was his usual gracious host. The remains of strawberry shortcake and chocolate almond pie.
Jo Aydt
We drove an hour and a half to go to the night in New Orleans special event. We made reservations for 6 and were promptly seated. They had a guest chef from New Orleans and the food was out of this world. The Ambiance of this restaurant is very romantic. It was worth the drive and worth the money. Memorable evening.
Bert Spence
The Bright Star has been a Birmingham area (Bessemer) landmark for over a century. Recently it was renovated and restored. Historic murals were cleaned and look almost like new. The food is delicious and fits a category I call "Greek Southern." So many restaurants in the South were started by Greeks fleeing Turks in various waves of immigration in the early 20th century. The Bright Star has always been one of the best of them and continues to shine!
Larry Kimbrough
Today was my first trip to The Bright Star Restaurant, I had a reservation which I recommend especially on a special day like today which is Father's Day. Big crowd but the service was fast and courteous and the food was excellent.
Kurtis Mullinax
I’ve eaten at the Bright star a few times, I have never received a bad meal in this restaurant…of course it’s been here for years, and that’s one reason why it’s still is….the Fried Shrimp is to die for, the Steaks(Greek) are excellent, but one of the hidden gems is there Hamburger Steak!
Oh my! It was delicious…..best food I’ve eaten in a long pandemic or other wise.
Charles Pilant
Greek tenderloin and seafood platter. Hers and mine were excellent!
Mary Derr
Party of 10 of us & all were pleased. Appetizers served quickly & entrees not far behind. Variety of food had was really good & good size portions.
suntaree wainwright
Our ladies group decided to have lunch at Brightstar after golfing since it is close to the golf course where we played. I have been living in Birmingham more than 20 years and never been here. One of our ladies said its food is really good. I wanted to try. It is not disappointing at all. Everbody likes their food. I like my entree from lunch menu. It is neither salty nor greasy like other restaurants. Also, the sides are awesome, shredded cabbage with its home sauce, roasted potato and cream corn. Brett is our server who is friendly and provides excellent service. Interior decors are so beautiful. Definitely, I will be back with my family.👍
Cindy Suttles
Always a wonderful experience. Staff is very friendly and pays attention to details. They always make you feel like you're their only customer, even with a packed house.
Erin Grantham
Absolutely fantastic! The history of the restaurant makes it a genuine treasure, and a great option when searching for local fare. I had the "Texas Special". The beef tenderloin was perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious! The Greek style snapper and lobster crabmeat au gratin were a great compliment to the tenderloin. We also shared the crab claws and fried green tomatoes - divine! I didn't try them personally, but several members of our group had the "snapper throats" and they all raved about how good they were. (I honestly had no idea that was even a thing.) Call ahead and make reservations if you know you're heading to Bessemer! You will not be disappointed.
Joseph Davidson
Mediterranean Steak was perfect..atmosphere and service impeccable.
Harold Lemley
Wonderful! We last visited 40 some years ago prior to being transferred to Georgia. We both had fried snapper filets. Delicious. Service excellent.
Phillip Casteel
Great place with great food the oldest restaurant in Alabama. Nice friendly staff and did I say good food.
Georgia Blair
The dressing I ate with turkey lacked seasonings. The candy yams and turnip greens were delicious. The bread pudding was soggy and not well seasoned. I have been here other times and the food has been delicious.
KEVIN “Gibo” CHASE
I miss The Sahara in Montgomery, but Bright Star is close. Excellent tea, but the server didn't know what brand; maybe it's a secret?
tom scott
The snapper was tasty
Brandi Frederick
Bright Star is consistently exceptional; from its delicious food to its friendly staff. There's a reason it's been around for over a century. Reservations recommended, but even without, it's worth the wait. Get the Greek salad, you will love it. The Greek style tenderloin never disappoints! They are knowledgeable about and safely accommodate gluten free!
Kim Rosser
Sent for the Christmas Eve dinner. It was delicious
Illaya Oglesby
The food and the service is really good. Enjoyed my meal. I had the red snapper stuffed with veggie and my husband had the fried catfish. Both dinners were good. There wasn't a long wait at all. It is kinda pricey for the area.
diane derzis
Unbelievable!! Delicious... great vegetables and snapper and the greek dressing is top for for.
Dan Garnand
Very delicious!
Sarah Brownlee
Food is still delicious! Staff are friendly, efficient, and hard working. Great value. One of the very best restaurants in the southeast!!
Whit Fancher
Best crab claws and catfish in town. Fast friendly service. Generous portions. A hidden secret. Always pleased with food and service.
Dakota Price
Fun experience, like stepping back into a time portal. Very eclectic place with great food. Must try!
Perry Bennett
Food was good, a bit higher price point than the quality would suggest. Service was good, checkout process and tip on cards left a lot to be desired. Overall decent but given the area and quality, not really worth the premium in my opinion
Steve Winfield
I've eaten at many, many fine restaurants. Bright Star is about as good as it gets. The Texas Special is amazing. Greek style broiled red snapper along with a Greek tenderloin. (Filet Mignon). Get the Greek Salad as well. It's a lot of food but they'll package your leftovers very well. I've treated many to this & all with 5 star reviews. It's beyond description. I've eaten at all of Emiril's restaurants & many 5 star places nationwide. For my taste, The Bright Star is as good as any. You owe it to yourself. Tenderloin, snapper or stuffed shrimp. All will melt in your mouth.
Paola Romero
Really enjoy the food here. Great atmosphere.
Mari Johnson
Lunch was excellent! We would visit the restaurant when we lived out of town. Enjoyed it just as much since we have moved back home! Good things never change!
Timothy Taylor
This was our first trip to the Bright Star, and we're glad we made it. My wife had the crab-stuffed shrimp and gumbo. She was happy with her shrimp, and said the gumbo was the best she's ever had. The blackened snapper with the lemon butter sauce hit the spot with me. Definitely worth the drive over from Tuscaloosa!
Patty Norris
This was my first time at Bright Star and I was really impressed. Everything from the appetizers to the desserts were delicious and our waiter was on top of things. We never had to ask for a refill on drinks or anything else really. We will definitely be back.
Denice Stisher-Howell
Service was exceptional. Our server was very accommodating in helping me find gluten free options. I had grilled snapper, green beans, buttered squash and yams. Everything was delicious.
Stephanie R. Tinney
I hated going there as a kid, but I do so love it as a adult! Very nice ambiance and wonderful food.
Birmingham Estate Sales
We adore this iconic family and restaurant. A MUST
Chase Henson
Always delicious food and excellent service when my family and I come 😎 …
Nicholas Polk
Great food, great service, and affordable lunch pricing. Hearty southern portions. Big boy did not leave hungry.
Margaret Mayfield
Open until 3 pm. We arrived at 2:50 and was told the kitchen was closed. Disappointed 😞
Merrilyn Cook
This is probably the oldest family-run restaurant in the Birmingham area (Bessemer). It has always had a sterling reputation for great food and service and after over 100 years, it still has both. The food is always fresh and is prepared well. You just can't go wrong dining at the Bright Star. I usually choose the seafood because it is very fresh and delicious.
Tony Manocchio
First time there will definitely go back on my next business trip
Nita Linneman
OH MY GOSH...A STEP BACK IN TIME...BEAUTIFUL PLACE...EXCELLENT FOOD. SNAPPER..CRAB CAKES..COLESLAW..GUMBO...THE SERVICE.....AWESOME. GOOD FOOD. BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO DINE. RICH IN HISTORY. GOOD PORTION SIZE. REASONABLE FOR THE OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF THE FOOD.
Nancy Roberts
Food was good, service was good, the wait was long for food to come out, but in all fairness it was a Sunday and very busy. Staff and Owners were very nice
Katherine Beale
We always enjoy lunch at Bright Star. The Greek chicken breast at lunch is always so tasty. However, the night menu chicken is completely not the same and not as good.
Brian Mears
My hamburger and French fries were delicious! 😋
roy rogato
An Alabama institution.. recently went to celebrate a birthday with a party of 14 .. excellent service and excellent food.. easy to see why The Bright Star has been a staple in the community since 1907. Everyone was already planning for a return. Keep doing what you are doing!
Tim Parker
Snapper throats were delicious as well as the fresh veggies. Homemade salad dressing and coconut pie for dessert made my whole day. Stephanie was an awesome server.
Tys Greene
Our group of 25 had reservations, we were seated immediately as we arrived. Menu choices varied from open face roast beef, to various fish dishes. I had a great baked Salmon, cooked squash, home fries (as good as Grandma's). And a salad.Very good with Blue Cheese crumbles, and coffee. All for $12.95. I heard no complaints, and it appeared everyone enjoyed the meal. Service was great, quick, and they served the right meal to each one of us... Claims to be Greek, but mostly AMERICAN foods.
P. Dave Brackett
Amazing food. Had the broiled seafood platter, Greek style. Wonderful! Save room for dessert!!
Reauchann Richardson
I had salmon, potatoes and green beans o m g, the best salmon i ever had. The potato, not sure what they did, but i will order it again. The peanut butter pie was damn delicious. 10:10 for the entire meal

We have eaten at The Bright Star at least once a week, sometimes as many as three times a week, over the past forty plus years...and I can't remember ever having a bad experience. HOWEVER, a couple of nights ago, we had a terrible experience! Since Jimmy died (the eldest of the two brothers who own The Bright Star) it's like they're short-cutting all of the things that make it the Bright Star. I have never sat down at the table there without having a basket of assorted crackers, and a dozen or dozen and a half pats of butter already on the tables....but NO MORE! They didn't even have salt and pepper on the table! Nicki, the youngest brother actually took our orders, so we were absolutely SHOCKED when our food arrived at the table, and all three of our orders were wrong! One of us ordered a seafood platter, and sub shrimp for oysters...but when it came, it had the oysters instead of the shrimp...so we told the waitress. The other two of us love oysters, so he gave us his oysters.....but when the waitress brought his four shrimp, she took the two oysters from my plate, and the two from the other plate....and took them back with her! I was really shocked to know that she had rather throw them in the trash than to let the other two of us have them! ANYWAY, they need to really work on the experience. Jimmy was the brother who snapped and took care of quality control...and there's NO DOUBT about it...he's definitely missed. I hope and pray they work on things because for $195.00 for three to eat is terribly expensive without the experience.....
linda smith
If you go with not come prepared to pay as it can be quite expensive for some dishes.
Donna Terry
Delicious! Great service and fantastic food. First time trying Bright Star but will absolutely be back.
Charles Crittenden
Awesome place and great food. My first time.
Kimberly Cole Zemke
Great food and very kind server. Enjoyed it very much. The building is beautiful and historical with brightly colored murals on the walls reminiscent of the ones we saw while touring Europe. The food was impeccable and the portions were very generous. My husband got the Veal and stuffed mushrooms topped with crab for an appetizer. Both dishes were delicious. I got the Greek Snapper with lump crabmeat on top. My food was fresh and delicious. My son got the Snapper Almondine which he absolutely raved about. My Mummy got the spaghetti and my brother got the seafood platter. Every dish was splendid but the crown jewel were the fresb homemade pies. We got Coconut Cream Pie, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Almond and all were SCRUMPTIOUS!!! It was my family birthday meal and it was delightful. I hope they hold the door open for us because we will be back very soon.
Bryan Bailiff
I was very surprised to find a restaurant of this quality in Bessemer. The building us over 100 years old and this restaurant has been there for all that time. My steak was cooked perfect, every item served was excellent and my server gave us both privacy and the attention we needed. I will be back next time I'm in this area.
Tamara Neel
This restaurant we must dine at every time we visit B'ham.
Dolly Northcutt
Their food is delicious and fresh. Snapper Almondine is my favorite. Don't miss their peanut butter pie.
Aaron Mowery
Great place, excellent food, incredible service. We love our local gem. Great for a date night & even celebrated our family Christmas Eve dinner there this year & everyone loved it. Thank you to their wonderful staff for creating a wonderful experience for our family, working on Christmas Eve has to be difficult, but they were amazing.
Dessie Wall
Great food. Good service a bit pricey
Marcus McC
Hard to beat Bright Star for the food, the service, or the history. Dinner is pricey, but worth it. Lunch is more reasonable and still very good. A good variety and I've never found anything that wasn't terrific. And a very interesting piece of history, too. Materials and murals dating back a century!
Kyle Sampsell
Had the beef tenderloin with the Greek seasoning; never disappoints! Finished with an order if baklava cheesecake...so good!
Jack Holland
Have always liked Bright Star but since I wasn't real hungry thot I'd try child's plate. With the $14 child's shrimp plate I got 4 shrimp & 1 side dish. That's all?! It was tasty, the place is clean, service was ok but over $20 w drink, tax, & tip. For small helping of 2 items at lunch. Too much money for too little.
Emmett Godfrey
How does a restaurant survive in the same place with the same ownership for over 100 years? By being excellent in all aspects. The service is excellent, the food is always a treat (I like lunch the best because of all the home cooked vegetables), and I always feel welcome, even if it's almost closing time. The service is prompt, but you never feel rushed. A restaurant with true southern charm. One tip - order from the lunch menu at lunch. I noticed a review where the person was not happy. He ordered from the nighttime menu at lunch. Don't fight the system. You'll love it like I do.
Daniel Ballard
They were busy as always but the staff still took the time to make you feel like you were the only one there. Also the bread pudding is excellent and a good way to end any meal
Cathy Bishop Jones
I absolutely love this place!!! The atmosphere is great! The service is great! The food is great! They are very welcoming! The owner even greets you, and will even pick up dirty plates from your table to take them away! I am 54 years old and can say this is one of my all times favorites....., and I usually have a hard time picking favorites of anything! I wish everyone could atleast experience it once in their lifetime!
Alison Collins
Must. Visit. ASAP. This place is phenomenal! It’s like you’re on the set of a movie. Service was incredible - very attentive to the patrons. The owner even walked us out! Not to mention the delicious menu - I wanted to try everything!! Crab claws, gumbo, grilled snapper, and ribeyes were all enjoyed by our group. Definitely recommend and will certainly return the next time I’m visiting the BHAM area.
Tee Bailey
This place is never disappointing. Really good seafood dishes! The vegetables are usually good too. I wasnt a fan of the buttermilk cornbread muffins but the rolls were delicious and the desserts are outstanding. I had the coconut cream pie this time and the serving was large enough to share. We were this time with an extra large group so the service was a little slow but worth the wait.
Patricia Talley
The food was excellent and the waitress was so engaging, and friendly. Awesome!
Bailey Pappas
Pretty good food. Ate here for my brothers birthday couple weeks ago. I had shrimp and bread pudding for dessert.
Victoria Evans
This place is an icon. The food and service are as great as ever! Memorabilia makes the place like a delightful museum. Wine prices are surprisingly reasonable, and they offer full bar service with some specialty drinks like Long Island Tea. They still serve bread and butter! I had the special of the day which was stuffed snapper, quite good. The menu is a mixture of Greek and Southern, they even have peanut butter pie. Atmosphere is cordial and comfortable, dress is somewhat upscale like business casual. Thankfully a respite from modern chain restaurants, the Bright Star is its own good thing. There are tables for big groups, and comfy booths for a date or small gathering. Highly recommend!
Jennifer Warner
Delicious food and awesome pie! My kids loved both the Greek steak and the chicken breast. The gumbo is shellfish free and you can taste that they built layers of flavor into it forever. The table bread is flavorful. The lemon pie is wonderful, creamy and delicious! I love that they serve wine.
Vicki Henyon
Kierra was our server and she was spectacular! We enjoyed our 9th anniversary dinner very much. This was our first time eating at The Bright Star... it will not be our last! Quality food and quality service.
Lisa Mccain
Good food, good service, great atmosphere
Laura H
Always reliably
Great food at a great price, this place is a landmark of local Soutern culture.
Rikesha Foster
My mom and I have eaten here several times after church service. The owners are super nice, which go a long way with me. I usually order the turkey and dressing, and it's delicious. The Mac and cheese is good and the Greek style potatoes are great as well. I enjoy the ambience of the restaurant. It's upscale enough for date night, yet inexpensive enough to take out of town guests who want to experience one of the oldest restaurants in the state. It's a piece of history, for Pete's sake. What's not to love? Maybe the tiny portions, as my mom would say. Overall, this is a classy restaurant with a rich history...but if you are really hungry, or greedy, this is not your spot.
Anita S Bolton
The food was excellent. I had veal parmesan. My husband had their herb chicken, my family had the sirloin steak, we shared stuffed mushrooms, fried green tomatoes, and their shrimp appetizers. We had a party of 12 and the service was still perfect. We will be back many times!!
Tim Ellis
Very busy but still great servie.
Dane Poset
This is a state institution that has been open for over 100 years. Definitely the fanciest meat-and-three I've ever been to. That being said, I don't think the hype lived up to the experience. Quality and the amount of food were fine and the service was excellent. If I hadn't gone for a work lunch, I couldn't see myself spending $15.00 for a meat-and-three lunch.
William Brewer
Great local place with good food and a lot of history
John May
Ms. Craig,
Thank you very much for helping make our evening so successful. The waiter was as good as they come and must be one of your best, The flowers were absolutely perfect and Susan said she would call the florist to tell them what a very nice job they did for us and you. Would recommend them to anyone. The waiter made an extra effort to make it enjoyable and, as always, your food was as good as it gets. It was an evening that will be remembered for a very, very long time.
The bread pudding, as Susan said, was the best she had ever had.
I can not thank you and your staff enough for the kind comments and efforts made by all. The Bright Star has earned and deserves it's reputation. We wish you many more years of success. You are, and have been, an asset to the entire industry.
Sincerely,
John and Susan May

My favorite restaurant in the Birmingcvham area! Always great food, great service and wonderful atmosphere! When we have friends visiting from out of town The Bright Star is where we take them. We average eating here 40 - 50 times per year. Also, we have enjoyed many Thanksgiving dinners at the Bright Star! And, Todd is our favorite server!
Tonya Scott
This was my first-time eating at the bright star. The food was fresh and hot. So good. The service was fast and very polite with a smile. The atmosphere was warm, friendly and romantically cozy. I would recommend to anyone for a date or just lunch. 5 star all the way.
Edward DeMellier
Always good food with good service. The menu is straight forward not fancy but good eats. The venue has old charm that harkens back to older times with dark woods, private booths, and quiet. You can actually have a conversation with your dinner companions.
Linda Maloy
The Bright Star is one of those rare critters in the restaurant world, especially in Birmingham or to be more precise, Bessemer, Alabama, being both historic and contemporary. Because of these qualities it is both familiar and exciting.
Begun in 1905, the Koikos family has owned and operated it ever since that time combining Southern favorites and Greek cuisine. Both their fried chicken and the Greek-style beef tips over rice are not to be missed! Topped with their fresh baked pies, such as my favorite, chocolate cream, the meals are always memorable.
Priced in the mid range for destination restaurants, the Bright Star lives up to its name without breaking the bank. With that quality beyond simple coin of the realm, cordial hospitality, this restaurant, adult beverages or no, is one to put on your bucket list, and to keep enjoying for years to come.
Sharon Delaune
Very nice restaurant. We had a party of 9 and the service was great even though there were several of us. The food was a little over priced for the chicken since I'm not a steak eater. They need more options on the menu for those of us who don't eat steak. Would my husband and I go back just the 2 of us, probably not, but for a special occasion with friends we would.
E Keener
Amazing hamburger steak! As I'm not a seafood fan, and my husband is allergic to shellfish, we came to Bright Star for a birthday celebration. Saw the hamburger steak on the menu and figured it wouldn't be super because it's a mainly seafood restaurant. Wrong! It was well seasoned, onions were delicious and we even got extra gravy! So good. Had enough for lunch the next day!
E.T. Hollander
Excellent sea food great atmosphere and friendly service.
Krista Amato
Service very good, food and drinks were good!
Cenchrea Cooper
This restaurant is not very cheap but definitely worth the money and getaway. It's relaxing and pretty upscale. I enjoyed my visit here for mutt birthday but the food took really long to get prepared and I did not get to dine in before the movie started. Took the food with me but did enjoy it later that night. Give at least an hour and a half timing before planning your next event.
Jason Hatter
It is always great. Be sure to get the Greek salad. The crab claws, fried green tomatoes, and gumbo are always a solid choice to start. All the preparations of snapper are great. The beef tenderloin is a go to if you don't want seafood. And the shrimp are always fresh. Be sure to end with pie. I prefer the coconut cream, but other like the peanut butter and the chocolate. However, note that the chocolate has an almond flavor to it.
Sara Cofield
This place with it's storied history never disappoints. I got the pan seared salmon and it was perfection. It stood on it's own but the dill sauce was delicious. Vegetables were good too. Broccoli was overcooked a tad for my taste but still very tasty. The waitress very good and Nita (?), Bright Star's ambassador dropped by to greet and tend any needs. She explained that there is a pie lady that cooks their pies on the premise daily (which explains why the coconut pie was so good). It's always an exceptional dining experience.
JIM ROTKIEWICZ
The food is amazing and the service is just as good.
wanda willoughby
We eat there sometimes twice a week we drive from clanton every Sunday this is our favorite restaurant the food is delicious and service is absolutely awesome
Brett Larocca
Tenderloin and an amazing Greek salad. Staff greats you like family. Had a superb service. I will return again.
Lynn Dickey
Delicious food, beautiful historical restaurant and outstanding service!
We had 3 different items from the menu and each item was perfect. The gumbo was especially noteworthy. Bananas foster is a great way to finish off the meal, if you can find room.
Patty Barr
Great food and service. We had their signature beef tenderloin and fried oysters and both were delicious. Our waiter never bothered us yet was on hand for everything we needed. We traveled an hour and a half to get there and it was worth the trip. We'll be going back!
brandy andrews
Our waitress, Linda, was fantastic! She gave us a quick tour and told us some of the history! Jimmy was a sweetheart! The food was exceptionally good. It was truly the best gumbo we have ever tasted....we had to get some to go! And we will definitely be returning.

A must for anyone who wants to experience a truly authentic and amazing local dining experience! The oldest restaurant in Alabama features incredible early 1900 murals and tile work creating a unique atmosphere and attraction. It is the first Alabama restaurant to receive the James Beard Award for culinary excellence. The food is excellent and the staff is equally as good. A consistently Great experience!

Just celebrated our daughter's birthday with family at the Bright Star, knowing that we would not be disappointed. Service could not have been better as our waitress was very friendly and accommodating to our group. Food was served very timely and was delicious as always. Great experience, and our birthday girl was very happy too!
Linda Trucks
Love, love, love Bright Star. Celebrated my 70th birthday. Excellent food excellent service.
Seretha Jolly
The food was amazing. The service was top notch for the big crowd that was there. Thank you so much for your awesome service. Will come back again.
David Coker
Had a wonderful and complete dinner this evening, celebrating a beloved friend's birthday. Excellent service and food (kept to the Classic menu & got hamburger steak w/ baked potato, cabbage salad). Very satisfied and full - not always an easy feat. My friends plates all looked delicious as well. Owner stopped by to say hello and check on everything. Yes, maybe a little on the pricey side (not too much, though), but the way I figure it, the quality is worth it. That plus the fact that it's family owned and such a classic, historic location, it is a great dining experience. It had been years since I'd visited; I do not intend to make that mistake again.
Nora Gilchrist
The Bright Star has been our family's favorite restaurant for many decades. We
always plan our special days there as well as weekly visits when possible. The food is outstanding with so many choices excellently done. There is always a welcoming greeting as though they have been just waiting for us to arrive! When my
friends invite me out to eat, they know where to take me as my first choice, The
Bright Star! And I get to see many life-long friends there who experience the same
appreciation of quality food, excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere. Can't
say enough good about this fabulous restaurant!
Jay Thomas
As always service and food was great.
But the last two times I have been there my food was not hot.
Other than that, everything was great.
Charlene Myers
Bucket list restaurant. Food is amazing and atmosphere takes you back to days of the Great Gatsby. Ask for the history and about the paintings!
Michael Garrett
Loved this place! An iconic restaurant in yhe Birmingham area, went there for the first time a few months ago for lunch. Recently went back for dinner, it was wonderful. Quality ingredients, great preparation, and super service. It's often billed as a Greek restaurant but it has fare for all tastes. The seafood selection is very nice. The location itself has it's own personality, has a vibe of a time gone by. The prices are what I consider a bit high, but absolutely worth it.

Subsequently my first visit, my meal was so good, I went two-three times a week for a month. Bright Star has a stuffed red snapper that's so good, I could eat it every other day,😉.
I won't mention the fresh oysters, crab cakes, gumbo, eggplant parmesan, greek salad, and my mom loves the snapper throats.
I would love to see a baked fish with a greek sauce yum. The atmosphere is nice, and the staff is professional, courteous, and kind. You won't be disappointed for sure.
Chas Hart
Anytime is good to enjoy a great meal at The Bright Star. Sunday night is especially good as the crowds are small and the attention is especially personal. Alabama's oldest restaurant is also one of best!
Patricia Hunter
Had a tasting session with Bright Star catering. Everything was superb! Chef came in & introduced himself. April is a great coordinator. Looking forward to a wonderful wedding dinner. Highly recommend them❣

My birthday lunch was very enjoyable with my two sisters and niece. They always greet us when come in the door and make us feel welcome. One of my sisters is handicapped and they always go out of their way to accommodate her needs for a table that she can access easily. The food was delicious as always. The pan seared salmon with garlic dill sauce is the best I have found anywhere and the vegetables are wonderful. The peanut butter pie is the best I have ever found. This restaurant has been my favorite for may years.
Linda Woodward
We brought our guests from Denver to the Bright Star the night after Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful experience as usual and they were impressed that we have such a unique place in Birmingham! As usual, the food was delicious and our party of eight enjoyed the privacy of the little rooms at the back. The staff are always friendly, and efficient and never try to rush you out of the place! After appetizers and dinners, no one wanted dessert, but we did order two of my husband's favorite bourbon bread pudding to share. We have been regulars since 1977 and can't wait for our next visit!
Caroline Madison
The food was excellent. I had lunch with my father, whom I hadn't seen in a little while so we enjoyed our time and our meal. Our waitress was super sweet and kind.
Lee Reese
If you've never been to the Bright Star you must go at least once. The atmosphere is good and it is pretty cool to look at all the old murels and pictures. Originally opened in 1907 it has been run by the same family at least since 1925. Food is normally good as is service. Be prepared to wait if you walk in. I suggest reservations.
Lori Nation
Father’s Day lunch menu was so good. As usual, we ate too much but it was worth it.
Jonas B.
Honestly, to be as hyped up as it was before I went and made it for 115 years I kind of expected a little bit more. Well not more but better. The open face roast beef sandwich was canned gravy Meh, I do realize this is a Greek restaurant but The crab cakes tasted like onion cakes. I will say though that the beef tips were nothing to write home about. Pie, pie was okay. However, will I go back? Yes absolutely I will go back.
Johnny Campbell
Very good. Exceeded expectations. Blackened snapper throats and sampler platter was delicious. The staff was friendly and professional.
LaTrice Silar (MzTrice)
Greek style cuisine... Food and quality was excellent 👌. The kids ordered Spaghetti and meatballs which they enjoyed. I ordered Hamburger steak smothered in onions with a side of shrimp and my husband got the filet mignon with a baked potato. The sweet tea even was excellent. My only complaint was the wait.. it was a big party before us but it was worth it .. Thanks Allison for being an excellent server!!!!
Ashlee Lowery
The food and service was delicious. Went there for a my birthday lunch with my grandmother and aunt. Brought back alot of good memories for my grandmother. Can't wait to go back!
Michael Thomas Stainback
The service is extraordinary. Few restaurants in Birmingham have the incredible history of Bright Star so it should be visited at least once by everyone. Prices are on the high side but it is worth the trip. They do an excellent job handling large groups.
Gina Anderson
Whenever I get to choose the place THIS is it! In fact, I am going there for dinner tomorrow evening!
I love the snapper and the stuffed shrimp! Their beef tips are also delicious! The bread pudding is to die for and the service is impeccable!
Jim Thompson
One of the best restaurants in Birmingham metro. They are downtown Bessemer a block from the court house. If you get close to Birmingham in your travels, this is a must place to eat. Great seafood. They have steak too.
Stephanie Paige
Had a VA pre need seminar, with other Veterans , Retirees and family. Had a blast, seminar informative and fun! I really enjoyed the evening, food and service were A1!! Thanks Dignity. We spent $0
Deanna Ezell Hallman
Excellent service, delicious food, prepared perfectly.
Sheridan J
Amazing! Treated like Family, and seated very quickly. Food came out fresh & hot. Me and my brother had went for a birthday lunch and were given a free slice of pie.
Kay Baggett
My husband and I love to eat at the Bright Star. In fact, we eat there every Sunday and have for many years. The food is not only delicious but the service is wonderful. The steaks are great and all of the pies are to die for. Of course, Lemon ice box is our favorite and the gumbo is the best I've ever eaten. We ordered their Thanksgiving special for eight to take out and it was great! I recommend you try the Bright Star if you haven't already.
Ben Blass
Truly a gem and world class restaurant! Staff is friendly, helpful and attentive. The Greek tenderloin is the flagship dish and best thing to order on your first time here. Make sure to come back and try the rest of the menu though!
Bre Steger
Update!!! I am not myself when I am hungry! The food was AMAZING. Ambience was top notch. The dill salmon and snapper was the best I’ve had and I’m not a fan of seafood but wow. Will be back. This is not a restaurant you come to 30 minutes before closing lol. I would have actually done myself a disservice. Will return!
Closing early because it’s slow isn’t a good enough excuse. I came at 8 and was turned away. Perhaps one day I’ll give this place a shot again.
Marie Sly
It was wonderful, I had the beeftips and rice, the tips were very tender. The atmosphere was nice. If those walls could talk, stories they would tell. It's like stepping back in time when you first walk in, everyone is very friendly, food is served quickly, and taste wonderful.
Rodger Christolear
The Bright Star has the most inviting atmosphere, it starts the moment you enter the door and last throughout the whole experience, the service you receive is wonderful and the food is mouthwatering. The Golden Gulf Shrimp, Prime Rib are our favorites but they also have the best hamburger steak anywhere. The extras salads are awesome and the bread is so fresh. The portions are large and you can taste the fresh ingredients and care that is put into these dishes. Trying the Bright Star once is not enough, the dining experience will have you coming back for lunch and dinner.
Jackson Caldwell
If the opportunity arises don't miss out on dining at this historical, 107 year old, restaurant, the oldest in Alabama. Treat yourself to the seafood gumbo, Greek styled beef tenderloin or fried snapper throats you will not be disappointed. The Bright Star's yeast rolls are delicious and addictive with or without butter. Save room for dessert the homemade lemon pie it is out of this world good! The best I've had. You might want to take an entire pie home with you and you can. Their chocolate pie is also a favorite. The Bright Star is open for lunch and dinner and both menus are astounding.
Harold Watters
This is a restaurant that you will want to visit several times. The food is excellent and the service is very good. Their prices are a little on the high side. You can expect to paid about $40 per person for a meal including drink and desert. This restaurant is an excellent choice for special occasions. Don't forget to include 15 to 20 percent gratuity for your server, they earn it.
keja McClarin
I placed a curbside order and paid for everything online. I picked up my good and realized that I was missing the seafood gumbo when I got home. I returned back, no one wanted to see proof that I had paid for the seafood gumbo. What this establishment did was give us a bowl of seafood gumbo and 2 slices of pie. And I must say, that was the best pie I have ever had in my entire life.
Scott Veitch
First time visiting the landmark tonight. Will not be the last. Atmosphere is extraordinary, service was awesome. The Tenderloin was the best I've ever had.
Ron Lynch
Great meal! Service and food was great! First time to eat there, but will be going back when I travel though Bessemer!
Kaelah Cobb
We were traveling through from Baton Rouge and stopped at the Bright Star. A little nervous as LSU fans and Alabama fans sometimes don’t mesh ;) however this place was awesome!
The food was fresh and delicious, we got two of the stuffed snapper specials, fried shrimp and crab claws. All was delicious. Our waitress was fast and attentive and very friendly. All staff we came into contact with were very friendly even to my husband in the LSU shirt ;)
We talked to the owner and head chef leaving and they were friendly as could be too.
Everytime we are passing through, we will stop here. Highly recommended, lived up to all the reviews! Great establishment!
Michael Forrest
All the food I've ever had has been exceptional. I've read some of the reviews about customers having poorly prepared meals. The only thing i can say if your meal isn't up to your standards let the server know. No need to be ugly or rude. Just be straight with them. I've witnessed complete family meal taken care of and even replaced.
Leigh Waddell
Best fried oysters! Wonderful hospitality! Generous portions! You can't beat hometown love & care! During this time, they will even bring your pick up order to your car!
Scott Crawford
Very impressive! The Bright Star is not only a historical landmark but also just a wonderful place to eat. The food was well prepared and pleasantly presented. One understands why it was voted best steak in Birmingham. The atmosphere was even better - real Alabama white marble table tops, wood trim, and tiled floors in the main dinning room. We were immediately greeted by the Owner who treated us like honored guests and old friends. 2 dinners, coffee and a shared dessert w/o alcohol $80. Looking forward to our next trip.

My husband & I stopped in for lunch after long absence due to CoVid. It was fantastic, as always. My husband had the Snapper Almondine, his "usual". Delicious & a very large portion for lunch. He had a salad, roasted potatoes & baby lime beans as well, all delicious. I decided to try something different & ordered the Chicken Parmesan over Pasta. Wow! What a wonderful surprise! Accompanied it with turnip greens & carrot-raisin salad. Can't say enough good things about meal & service. A must try!
Larry w
My wife had the Pecan crusted snapper and I had the KC cut steak (ribeye). Both were absolutely delicious! My steak was tender and juicy, baked potato soft and steamy. Wife stated her meal was fantastic. Nice music and warm atmosphere. Will be back!
DixieDoug
I had an outstanding lunch at The Bright Star on Friday. The restaurant was packed so I ate in the bar. The food was heavenly! I had one of the daily specials, which was a crab cake, broiled crab claws, and grilled shrimp on rice pilaf. As my two sides, I chose spinich casserole and the shredded cabbage with house dressing. The shredded cabbage is angel hair, and the dressing is sweet and savory. The crab cake was probably the best I've ever eaten. Crisp on both sides, and lots of flavorful crab inside. The crab claws were meaty and broiled perfectly. The rice pilaf was fantastic! The grilled shrimp we're the crowning touch and were scrumptious! I loved the spinach casserole which has cheese and a fluffy breaded texture. Both a dinner roll and corn muffin we're provided with butter.
Mark Reed
Although this restaurant is over 100 years old, the food quality is excellent, and the prices reasonable. The restaurant is located in downtown Bessemer, a city that has seen better days.
The fried oysters were the best I have ever had away from the Gulf Coast and were fried to perfection. My daughter said her catfish was great. Likewise for my fried snapper almondine. My wife's hot roast beef sandwich was also good.
My only regret is that the lunch menu did not have the broiled seafood platter for which they are known. The next time I am in Birmingham, I will make a detour to eat here.
Brent Oaks
Supper was part or a meeting. We had about 25 people, service and food was awesome. I will make it a point to visit next time I am in the area.
Jamie Ellis
Bright Star is my favorite restaurant in the world. We gladly drive over an hour from Gadsden to dine here. The steaks are fantastic. The seafood is fresh. The Bread Pudding with Whiskey sauce is heaven. The music is relaxing and service is top notch.
Peggy Garrett
Food was excellent! We ordered the Texas Special, it is a delicious variety of their specialities. We will definitely continue eating at the Bright Star! Each experience is unique! We have several meetings a year there. Wonderful facility for meetings and the food and service meets every expectation.
Ricky Buchanan
Still delicious after all these years, food is fantastic. Historic dining experience with vintage memorabilia throughout the restaurant.
Dylan Pugh
The bright star is the best restaurant around. I have been there numerous times and have never had a bad experience. The best thing for two is the sampler platter. It comes with steak, fish and chicken and two sides. It is plenty for two. Highly recommend to friends and family.
Danielle Oglesby
If your looking for a very classy and ALWAYS has the best food around this is it! The chefs are wonderful! I have NEVER had anything bad from this place. Very clean also everyone's so nice. The Bright Star is the BEST in Alabama! There for sure is a reason it has been open for 100's of years! If you have never tried it YOU HAVE TOO!
Sarah Howell
Food excellent! Staff awesome! Drinks fabulous!
Shelia Boland
My husband and I were in Bessemer at lunchtime and decided to try The Bright Star, Alabama's oldest restaurant. We found it on trip advisor. We both ordered the daily special snapper and shrimp au gratin with dill sauce. It was wonderful! We both got large limas which reminded us of what we call butter beans and fried squash. Both were good, but we felt the serving of squash was pretty small. Our server Jaselyn was very good and very patient as I have lots of dietary restrictions, and she had to go to the kitchen a few times to get info for me. The food came out quickly and was hot. We both got the baklava cheesecake, and had to get a to go box for the halves we couldn't eat. One to share would've been plenty. We also loved the restaurant itself and the handpainted wall murals. It was a very good experience overall. We plan to dine there again when we return to this area.
Elnora Moore
My husband and I always enjoy eating at Bright Star. Whenever my friends and relatives are in town, we will visit this historic restaurant. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the food is excellent. I love the gumbo. My favorite dessert is the coconut cream pie! Southern food at its best!
Lishi K
Everything was delicious! My waitress, April, was delightful! I had their crab cakes with the shredded coleslaw, buttered squash and fried okra. That's a very beautiful restaurant, a wonderful option to have available.
Eric Berry
We ate here for lunch after our courthouse wedding next door. They were very nice and offered great service. The food was great too. Eating at this historic place was a great touch to our special day and I'm sure it will be here for years of anniversaries to come.
Vyrooka L
Went to their annual "Night In New Orleans" on Friday. We've been going for the last three years and this year was the best by far! The chef was so kind, the food was amazing, and as always the waiter was fantastic! Can't wait to go back!
Randy Ray
Eating at the Bright Star is always a wonderful experience and our lunch this past Wednesday continued the tradition! The service, food and atmosphere are always the best. It is also a joy when our fellow dinners seem to be having the same great experience! It is truly a Bright Star!
Scott Hughes
Awesome food, awesome atmosphere and wonderful service!
Steven S
The best! Great steaks! Wonderful elegant atmosphere but still seems quaint. Service is awesome. Owners are very attentive. Great old classic in Bessemer Alabama. Who would have thought?
Stacy Reed
This was my first visit to the Bright Star and I was not dissapointed. A sweet lady friend of mine treated to lunch today (Sunday). The prices were not bad at all. I had Fried Red Snapper Throat, Greek Salad, Greek Potatoes and Black-Eye Peas. I had the Pineapple Cheesecake for dessert. Everything was delicious and the servings were much more than I could eat. (We actually got carryout boxes for our leftovers. I can't wait until weekend after next bc my husband and I are going for Sunday lunch.
Mary Evelyn Smith
The Bright Star has my favorite restaurant for around 30 years. I have celebrated birthdays and several years ago my Aunt and Uncle's 50th wedding anniversary. The food is always delicious and reasonably priced especially at lunch. My favorite is the pan seared salmon and also the fresh vegetables and pies are excellent. My sister is handicapped and they always go out of their way to accommodate us with a table she can get to easily and make us feel very welcome.
Terry Farrington
Our family's favorite place to eat for years. The food has been and is always good!
You can never go wrong with anything that your order at lunch or dinner. I don't think we have ever had a bad meal and tell anyone that has never eaten there it should be a "must" on their "to do" list.
Jamelyn Pounds
Came in late for my birthday dinner and told the gentlemen it was our first time visiting and he made our dining experience above and beyond! Not to mention the food was amazing! Order the K.C. Extra Cut and it was the best steak I've had! Well worth the price and would definently recommend it to a friend!
Daishaun Morgan
The food was very good. The staff friendly and attentive. This was first visit while attending with a birthday party we will diner there again.
Rhonda Lewis
No one can beat the personable service, friendly atmosphere and awesome food that you get at the Bright Star. This is my favorite place to go and you will never be disappointed in the Greek tenderloin and Greek salad. Deserts are awesome and if you are too full, just get one to go! Thanks for always taking good care of us and making our dining experience so wonderful!
Meredith Harper
The Bright Star has always been my husband's favorite place to eat and now that we are married, it is our "special occasion" restaurant. The food is second to none and the staff is very friendly. My husband loves everything on the menu. I would highly recommend the fried chicken!
Cathy West
My husband and I dined this evening at Bright Star.
Upon entering we were greeted like old friends and seated at our table. Our waitress came introduced herself, asked if we had any questions then took our order. In a few minutes our food arrived. We had the sampler platter which included (greek chicken, beef tenderloin, and greek snapper) along with the 14 oz hand cut ribeye steak. The food was delicious. My compliments to the Chef and Bright Star for another
wonderful evening.
John Hendershot
Like taking a step back in time. Although the restaurant is large, the atmosphere is relaxing and cozy. Service is top-notch and everything is clean. We tried three different entrees and the food was delicious. This is a "must visit" place.
Bonnie Myers
My friend from TN and I had a delicious dinner of fresh Gulf friend shrimp and red snapper Greek Style. It was the first time that I have dined in a restaurant in 5 months. The management had my COVID concerns eased and then to our surprise sat us in Bear Bryant's old private booth which helped isolate us further. Roll Tide!
Devin Taylor
This is a historic restaurant located in Bessemer with a reputation for great food. I love the service every time I go in and the murals that are getting repainted are something to see. I find the food to be average to a little above average on the handful of times I've ate there.
Robert Rentschler
My lunch experience was pleasant! Greek snapper is a sure fire entree, as are the snapper throats. Sides are the best of southern tradition. The Greek potato is a tasty exception. My daughter, who has issues with salt, found the broiled snapper to be a perfect solution since it never has added salt. The bread pudding is usually only available for evening meals, but on Valentine's Day it was. A delicious recipe!
Peggy Holly
My sisters and I meet for lunch monthly and one of our favorite spots is the Bright Star. The greet and service staff are all very friendly and accommodating. The food is outstanding and our favorite is the snapper, always fresh and deliciously prepared.
I like that the marketing staff will send you reminders for special events, etc. and you don't have to work hard at getting a great lunch or dinner experience for those special occasions.
mtuscaloosa
Absolutely love The Bright Star. Customer service is top notch and the food is delicious. The Fried Green Tomatoes never disappoint. Definitely an old school establishment that is worth trying out.
Cheryl Pugh
I like the lunch menu better than the diner menu. They have a large selection of vegetables on the lunch menu that they do not have on the dinner menu. They also have a good selection of lunch specials.
Everything at lunch is always very fresh and very good. My favorite is the salmon with dill sauce and the carrot and raisin salad.
Laurie Beth Kesterson
A must try if you are visiting the area! An Alabama staple
Doug Kimpton
The ribeye steak and fresh fried Gulf red snapper throats were out of site. The staff and owner were all so friendly and
went out of there way to talk to us and make us feel right at home. A must go to restaurant!
Sandra Cheatwood
Food and service are awesome! My children and grands ate there this past Sunday. My husband and I have eaten there many times through the years. We love it! It's worth the drive across town!
Jerry j todd
Food was great. It was cold inside and the waitress was not good. We tipped her well maybe that will help. Food quality rate 4 out of 5. Nice ambiance, overall rating 3.5 because it was cold inside and the waitress seemed to not want to be there.
Pam Lindsey
Love the atmosphere that harkens back to a time gone by. Met the owner who was sincerely appreciative of us eating there. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and our first time to eat there. Food was excellent and they took very good care of us!
Terrance Sullivan
Great Food, Great Service, Historic Restaurant. The Beef Tenderloin Greek Style is Amazing!
Steve Parsons
Had week day lunch last week with customers. 1st time ever been there. Nice upscale place on bad side of town. Sat in the Nick Saban booth. The food was delicious but seemed like the server was having a bad day and it showed. It's worth going to at least once.
Pamela Sanchez
In today's fast paced world, I take such comfort in sitting down for a meal at The Bright Star. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and seated. The wait staff is friendly yet professional. The menu is filled with a variety of choices from seafood to steaks all with a wonderful Greek flair. Food arrives promptly and fresh. And whatever you do, don't skip dessert! In 1985, our rehearsal dinner was held at The Bright Star because it was our favorite restaurant then and it still stands at #1 today!
David Horton
Best seafood in the metro area, especially if you like snapper. Best gumbo around. If you don't want seafood there is plenty more to pick from on The menu. Save room for desert! The waitresses make you feel at home as most of them have been there about 20 years.
Charles White
Great experiences are regular occurrences at Bright Star! Food is always fabulous and staff is always attentive! A must have is their signature Bright Star long island tea! It's huge! Greek salad with entree is the way to go. If you've got room for dessert, all of them are delicious!
Chris Tindle
Oldest restaurant in the state for a reason. Damn good food!
Brandi Hammond
The stuffed shrimp was great but the expensive prime rib we ordered came and the little plastic stick that said it was medium rare was melted over and there was a tiny sliver of pink in the middle. It was dry. We just expected more for the price. But the crab stuffed shrimp was worth every penny.
Benjamin Lazarus
Service was awesome, even on Easter Sunday!! Loved the Greek Style Baked Chicken and Rice Pilaf!
Chris Robinson
My wife and I eat here almost once a month or more. You cannot beat the quality of the food or the people cooking and serving it. I have eaten here for over 40 yrs and if possible its seems to get better with age.
Great place for lunch or dinner and the #1 Long Island Tea we have ever had !!!!
G.C. Dillard
This visit was to buy two pies - a coconut cream and a chocolate - for a family birthday gathering. The whole pies are a little pricey, but every bite made the price worth it. And the birthday boy was very surprised and pleased to have his favorite dessert.
Ted Stevenson
Wonderful food and service... I recommend it highly
Barry Gilliam
I recently got back from the coast and the Gumbo at the Bright Star was better than anything I got down there. The service was great and my daughter said the Broiled Sea-food platter was the best she had ever had. To my taste, the bread pudding can't be beat even in New Orleans. You get what you pay for at the Bright Star.
Luke Golden
We went to eat here after visiting the doctor at UAB. Great atmosphere and food. The best part was the gentleman that shared his love for Jesus. No shame in the Lord for him. It was greatly needed and appreciated. God bless.
Lisa Bolin
Tonight we celebrated our 33rd anniversary at the Bright Store. Our waitress was awesome and the food was delicious. The coconut pie was the icing on the cake. We love going here to eat.
Angela Croskey
My first time going and the food was great. Our server (Kathi) was horrible. She treated us with no common courtesy nor respect. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or what was going on. When I go back, I will make sure not to be seated in her section.
Jack Moore
Food was OK. I've had it a long time ago and loved it then but it wasn't as good as I remembered. Ordered my steak medium rare and it arrive half of it was cooked medium well and the other half was rare. Bizzare! I ate it anyways
Phyllis Newsome
We are never disappointed with the food or wait staff at Bright Star. We enjoyed our annual Easter lunch with family on Sunday. The waiter was efficient and cordial while serving the food to our party of 11. Again, we all left very happily satisfied with our experience at Bright Star. We highly recommend the restaurant.
Cliff Vasser
Our visit to the Bright Star last week was wonderfrul, food was good our waitress was great. The Bright Star is the best place to go for a great bowl of gumbo and steak's. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and seated and everyone is so friendly. We have been going to the Bright Star for many years and will continue to go there for our steaks and seafood and the deserts.
Joe Taylor
Staff was friendly and helpful. The quality of food was surperb. A great dining experience! Loved it!
Eathel Short
Have been visiting your restaurant since I was a child. I am now 78. We have hosted joyful events and mourned with friends and family when loved ones were lost at your place. The food renewed our bodies and spirit. Always delicious and comforting. Like stepping back in time for e. Thank you.
Shay Nicosia
This restaurant has the most delicious food and vegetables. The staff is so nice and courteous and accommodating. This is the 2nd year in a row that our Heart of Dixie Harley Owners Group has celebrated Valentine's. Service and food is always the best!!!!
Shan Simmons
This is a hidden gem in Bessemer. You will likely be pleased with any item on the down-to-earth menu. The fish dishes are delicious. I eat here whenever I get a chance. I love it.
Jeanean Simon
So I love the food here. This time there was a quite a long line for me to stand in to pick up my order. They also forgot my slaw. Because there was such a long line I didn't even go back in to get my slaw. Otherwise it would be 5 stars
PappyBob Hartman
September 2021: Greek tenderloin steak, cup of the gumbo and lemon ice box pie to finish. All were excellent. Good service.
D'Aquarian Goddess
What did I miss?
After high expectations and constant rave reviews, I was expecting a much better experience. The food was mediocre. There was hair in the take out containers. The staff could greatly benefit from a team building exercise; everyone was in their own world, not together. Synergize people!!!!!
Marty Sullivan
My trip to Bright Star was Great. The service was excellent. Our food arrived promptly and our server was very attentative. We never had to ask for anything. She kept the iced tea, water and hot rolls coming. I highly recommend The Bright Star.
Ashlee Walters
The Bright Star is one of our family's favorite restaurant. My favorite dish (and I highly recommend) is the Greek-style broiled shrimp. The service is always excellent and the food is always a treat for everybody.
Brian Czup
First time there. Got the snapper throats and greek salad. No wonder they've been in biz so long! Incredible quality and beautiful building.
Jacki Beck
Awesome is a word that comes to mind when I thinmk of The Bright Star! Awesome Food, Awesome Prices, Awesome Employees and Awesome Desserts!! When you go for the first time you will start planning your next visit before you even leave. It is a great place to take customers for lunch that you want to impress! What are you waiting for? Plan your visit now to The Bright Star!
Jon Grigsby
Absolutely the finest place to have a quiet dinner with friends. Best food in Central Alabama. The service is top notch. I hold my FOP Lodge Christmas dinner here every year. We celebrate special occasions here.
Steve Smith
My first visit to this Legendary Restaurant was not disappointing. The menu is extensive. The service is impeccable. The food is wonderful! The atmosphere......well, you just need to visit this historic landmark in central Alabama. I’m already planning my next visit for dinner. Lunch was wonderful!
Dennis Littleton
Took my wife for her birthday. Our first visit. Service was outstanding. They make you feel important and at home. The food was fresh, prepared very well and taste great. Looking forward to Valentines Day.
travis hodgen
The Bright Star is incredible! It is the perfect place to celebrate special occasions, or to simply just have a great meal! The inviting atmosphere, friendly staff, and top-notch cuisine all make Bright Star the Best Restaurant around!
Tommy Aderholt
Bright Star is by far my favorite restaurant in all of the Birmingham area. I always look forward to going there and think about when I will return when I leave. The food is always delicious & the service is impeccable. You could not ask for a better dining experience. You feel like everyone knows you when you arrive.

Food was exceptional and a great value. Owners and staff made us feel welcome and valued. I don't have any complaints with this restaurant. It is my favorite in the Birmingham area. It is worth the drive!

Great place. Food is very good. Atmosphere is comfortable. Older building with very nice architectural details on the inside. Service was fantastic. Bread pudding was spectacular! :-)
Mary Beth Henderson
Best restaurant in Alabama. Delicious fresh seafood and steaks. Great service and excellent atmosphere
Wesley Higgins
The steak was amazing! No wonder they won an award for it. My dad loves the snapper. Such a great historic restaurant in downtown Bessemer the ambience is wonderful.
Christopher M Hart
The food is wonderful! Best fried green tomatoes I've ever eaten anywhere. Southern food & fresh Gulf seafood with a Greek flair. Only at Bright Star, y'all.
Joey Statum
A landmark place. The best food ever! The service was outstanding. Highly recommend.

Great atmosphere and super friendly staff. The food doesn't even need my opinion, the stuffed shrimp were phenomenal 😋. …

From my first experience in Bright Star Restaurant I felt I had found home. Jimmy, Nick, Stacey and all waitresses have treated me like family every time I eat there. It is not just getting a quick delicious meal at a reasonable price, but it is a cultural experience to not only remember but to share the experience with my family members, friends and business associates. Even though all waitresses have given me excellent service, I usually ask for Linda VanSweringen because she waited on me first time I ate there a few years ago. I was so impressed with her, if she is working I request her table.

Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere

Very unique atmosphere and the pictures in the entrance are great. The food was good at lunch was ok but far from Nickie's West or Irondale cafe quality. We had lunch dinner may be better. Gumbo was excellent!

The staff here were SO NICE and accommodating when I made a reservation and brought in a large group (~30) after my grandma's funeral. They have a nice room for groups. Highly recommend!

No pics bc they didn't get transferred to my new phone. But great service and good food. Our server was a delight. Plan to return soon. My Mom loved it . Again !

Romantic dinner with wife . Food was great service was great . Everyone show try the bright star at least once, we go 2 or 3 times a year and has never disappointed

My wife had the fried shrimp platter and I had the broiled seafood platter. Both were fantastic. We took a Go-Box and had more leftovers that we could eat the second day. The chocolate almond pie was great, but the best dessert in the house is the bread pudding!

The best southern comfort food in Birmingham! The Bright Star is a family favorite! The service is always wonderful. They offer the perfect combination of Greek and Southern cuisine, as well as the freshest and most delicious seafood dishes. To top it all off, the pies are to die for! If you haven't tried the Bright Star, it is a must!
Daniel potter
While it did have the luster of being the oldest restaurant, I didn't find that the cuisine was anything spectacular however, I will try again during the dinnertime. The service is wonderful, the atmosphere is very unique and all in all it was worth the 200 miles one way to experience.

Always a favourite. I have been dining here for many decades and have never been disappointed. Nick Koikos and his crew are the best!

This place does not disappoint! The food is great. The family history and restaurant history are very cool. The building itself is so rich with beauty and original design. I definitely recommend it!

Our group totaled 7 seniors. We each had a different lunch meal and every meal was very good with good portions. Definitely enjoyed our day!

I am retired from the US Coast Guard. I have eaten sea food in many coastal restaurants along the Gulf, Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as the Caribbean Sea area. The sea food at The Bright Star is the best I have ever had. As far as the Greek Steak goes, I say there is no steak I would rather have prime rib included. This is my favorite place to dine. More so than any place I have dined in my entire life and I am 68 years old. The service is incredible the atmosphere relaxing. The staff make my wife and I feel like a million bucks when we visit The Bright Star.

First time diner @ the Bright Star for lunch today. AMAZING experience...great food and service😎! I recommend the snapper almondine, slaw and gumbo....It is the oldest restaurant in Alabama and cozy, but elegant atmosphere. There are hand painted murals on the walls they are presently restoring that are absolutely lovely along with the Alabama marble used throughout.

214 years of tradition in one restaurant, and still in operation! I absolutely love The Bright Star. Anything you order will be prepared to perfection. Bring your wallet.

We eat at Bright Star almost every Sunday after church. We came in for Valentine and was seated in booth 6 order sweet tea and she brought unsweetened they took it back we waited about 20 minutes we finally got up and left and still no sweet tea. I have the Bright Star awards card

Friendly service that has been let down by high prices coupled with decent, not great food. I had the Greek style beef tips which were not barely warm and were covered in too much oil. I would go to Nikis West or even Cracker Barrel over Bright Star based on my last experience (which was a Saturday at lunch, party of four).

First of all The food taste very good. If you like fish, you will find something to chew on that will be a delight for your mouth and stomach.
But it is not the only great thing, the restaurant have that retro charm carring his own history. It is lovely and smelled like the old America.
The bright star is something so unique that I am always happy when I came downtown to Birmigham.
The staff is wonderfully dedicated to the customers...
Our waitress was probably the most skilled I have seen in the USA.
The pricing can seemed a bit off and more high rated. But the food is definitely hand made and done in a traditional way. The serving are American that for sure.
We probably pay for the history, but it is in my point of view fair for the overal quality of the place.
A must do!

This was my first time visiting this restaurant after hearing so many extravagant reviews and I must say I was shocked. I was on a business meeting and we both tried the salmon. We both agreed that it should have been cook a while longer. My squash was very mushy. My water was not refilled one time.

Very good service. Ordered open faced roast beef with gravy. Wasn't what I expected. It was ok . mashed potatoes with gravy and fried okra was delicious.

We Love the bright star. This resturant has been in business for a long time. The atmosphere is amazing...its like stepping back in time. This building has a lot of history and is located in the historical part of old down town bessemer. My parents used to bring me here to eat when I was a kid...now I'm bringing my children. Everything on the menu is AMAZING but our favorites are their Greek style filet, and peanut butter pie!! It's good place for a date, a family night dinner, or a party. This place is kid friendly. I know they do have a bar but it's in a separate area.

My mom turned me on to Bright Star not on because I love history and historic places that are still standing and thriving....so me and my 6yr old son have mommy / son day and we connect through food..particularly seafood...when I found out they had Crab claws I was definitely down to try it...we went in and sat down and looked through the menu an found them but we ordered the appetizer of them because its literally more than we could eat...they also have fries and salads we got and the house made dressings are wonderful...ranch is what we had...it does cost alot more then it should and I'd prefer the crab claws be a little more cooked just for my taste..but I cant say it was not worth it because it was..I dont care how it tastes as long as me and my baby feel welcome..and the server we had the 1st go I was convinced she didnt take us seriously as for the causal way we were dressed an maybe felt as though I didnt have the money to pay for such a expensive meal...but that was one waiter...I get our crab claws to go from now on an they know me by name now...wonderful family, historical and lovely place...I do recommend this place to any history bluffs or wine lovers...of course all I've had was the crab claws, steak tenderloin Greek style and fries an salad but it was very good food...

The stuffed snapper was excellent and the waitress made me feel very welcome. I will be back.

The Bright Star is the best restaurant in that area. They are very consistent in the quality of the food that they serve. They offer a good variety and pleasant service. They have been busy whenever I have been there but never to the point that it caused a delay in service. Highly recommend
Kristen Bobo
Easily the best stake around. Lunch is good for a quick bite, dinner is best for date night. A family owned classic with fantastic food and service to match (thanks Linda!)
Kent Piatt
Clearly one of the best restaurant's in the South Eastern United States. I've never been disappointed in over 40yrs. And it was there for 50 before I came along. Day in and day out for generations. If it's not on your bucket list...it should be.

My daughter and I went out...had not had mother/daughter date in a long time...we went to dinner at the Bright Star!! As always, we had a wonderful meal. We both had the Texas Special because I like all three items on this dish and it satisfies me more than anything I could think of to eat! If you haven't tried the Bright Star...you are missing out! My husband and I try to take a drive to Bessemer just to have dinner at the Bright Star quite often.
BILL GRUBBS
We have been going to the Bright Star for 50 years. They make us feel like family. The food is always delicious and the service is great. Jimmy and Nikki are the best!

My first visit. Some friends from Birmingham highly recommended the restaurant as a family owned with lots of history. Excellent food, nice southern hospitality and service with a smile. I will be back and take my wife for very nice evening dinner.

I've always loved The Bright Star. I feel if you are going for lunch get there before1o'clock. Every time I get there late some things are a little dried out. I had to get tarter sauce for the greek snapper. I had great service and will always go back.
Betty Kemp
My family enjoys special occasions celebrated at The Bright Star! We love the delicious food and the exceptional service! Everything I've ever had there has been wonderful - delicious desserts too! I especially love the Snapper Almondine and the Greek Potatoes.
Gary Herren
LOVE Bright Star! The food and service couldn't be better. They have the best steak and the best seafood you can find! I get the crab claws as an appetizer every time!
Sharon Hyche
Food was excellent (red beans & rice and grilled salmon)) for lunch on Tuesday. Service compliments to Nena was outstanding. Best of all worlds--food, service and atmosphere. Truly amazing. Ready to dine there again...soon!

Birthday wishes to my sweet beautiful wife. For her birthday I chose The Bright Star, my late mom and dad's favorite date place for lunch or dinner.
We each had the Snapper Almondine. She had fried okra, cream corn and slaw. I had the same entrée with Greek roasted potatoes, black-eyed peas and a salad. We both started with the Gumbo. We only wished we had each ordered a quart of it.
The fish was light and flaky, the tarter sauce went untouched. Just no need for it. The veggies were hot and just full of well rounded flavor. The Bleu Cheese dressing I had on my salad made the whole meal worthwhile. Our waitress. April, was just too wonderful. She took time to answer our questions about the menu and the dishes we contemplated. She was patient. Lol.
My beautiful sweetheart chose a piece of lemon meringue pie for her birthday cake. It reminded me of the look on my dad's face when he would get the same for dessert there for the probably 65 years that he visited this most cherished part of Alabama history.
Before we left, Ashley took time to look over the famous murals on the walls as well as the sports memorabilia posted. She was amazed.
Did we have a good time? Most certainly. Will we be back? Yeppers! Did I cry because I missed my dad. Yes, I think we both did just a little.
Dora Williams
We love this place! Nothing we have order has ever been bad. Make sure you try the gumbo, it is the best ever! Get the Greek Salad and ask for both of the dressings, your server will know, it's fabulous! If you have a big appetite get the KC Ribeye, you'll have some left over for lunch the next day. The Snapper almondine is fabulous, or the stuffed snapper will not let you down! Then make sure you get a piece of pie, even if you can't eat it there take it home, it won't disappoint you!
The owners Jimmy or Nicky makes a point to stop by your table and check on you and makes you feel welcome. Just love this place!
