I thought I would review the gym after being a member for a year and a half. This place isn't perfect, but it's probably the best deal that you can find in the city if you work it correctly. In short, this gym addresses all yor basic workout needs: cardio, weights, circuit training, spinning/yoga/zumba classes, and personal training. At the end of the day, if you want more than the bare bones gym, head up CT avenue to their nicer, but pricier, location.
Pros:
- Multiple, convenient locations
- Have nearly all the exercise equipment for most people
- Saunas
- Overall, the workout facilities are maintained and clean
- Busy, but you can typically have access to your machine without waiting
- Plenty of cardio equipment
- Free body fat percentage tests
- Put out free nutrition bars/snacks periodically
Cons:
- FEES everywhere. Activation fee. Cancellation fee. Fee if you change your membership. Even fees for towels if you have the basic membership.
- No pool
- You only get access to all locations with a significantly more expensive membership
- Fairly regular turnover in management
- Locker rooms are small, smelly, and there aren't that many showers
- Make no effort to reward long term members for loyalty
- Membership pricing makes little sense. When I registered, they had the $20 membership if you put down $150, a $30 membership if you put down $50, and a $40 membership with no money down. I was grandfathered into the $20/month membership, to my knowledge that's not offered anymore.
- Most of the trainers aren't particularly friendly

Clean gym, friendly staff and they have towels too. If you like solid weight and not the plastic stuff they have it here too. A little hard to find but what's not in DC, will go back here if I'm in the area because I know the weights are good and they have good machines too. The weight spread downstairs is nice too and it's been clean the last 2 times I've visited.

This is a gym, not a fitness center/spa.
Front desk and support staff (Jessie, Hugo, Jose, and Sondra) are exceptional. They push 110% everyday and members appreciate and respect the high quality service they provide.
Pete Mitec is a very knowledgeable personal trainer manager at this location. His personal training staff that I know (Ahmad, Adrian and Mike) are also knowledgeable and credentialed.
Problem is training staff seem to be instructed by the Washington Sports organization NOT to assist club members UNLESS they sign up for private, personal training lessons.
Sad, because often club members can be seen doing exercises incorrectly and no trainer is available on the gym floor to advise them that they might be injuring themselves. When personal trainers do not have private clients, the Washington Sports organization appears to instruct the trainers to stay in the staff offices, where they can be seen either talking with friends/clients or surfing the internet. It appears no daily, personal assistance to club members is included in the monthly membership fee (except for the annual fitness evaluation). Often on Sunday afternoons or evenings, there is NO personal trainer on site. Scary, if someone should injures him/herself.
There are some serious club members working out here. Club members are polite and respectful of others. No attitude here. Refreshing and always challenging place to work out!

After spending a year at the Silver Spring WSC, I got a new job in DuPont Circle. After looking at all the gyms near my new office, I decided to just transfer my membership to this location as it was the closest barbell gym to my office. It's clean, easy to get in and out in about an hour, not terribly busy during lunch, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
I dock a point however because this gym is overloaded with useless machinery and two floors of cardio equipment, yet has zero deadlift platforms and only one squat rack. It's also $10/mo more than the Silver Spring location yet lacks a true power rack area for barbell lifting and does not have a lap pool like the Silver Spring location does. So, you essentially pay more for less due to location - but hey, this is DC.
EDIT: WSC finally installed a deadlift area; though it still only has one squat rack.

Fairly good gym. Gets absolutely swamped after work in the evenings and desperately needs another squat rack. If you can come during non-peak hours, you'll have the weight room to yourself. Pretty expensive for an average gym experience, but it is right in the middle of downtown dc

I had reached a low point in my dieting and exercising and wanted to hit the refresh button. I had been going to WSC for a few months but didn't feel I was pushing myself enough so one day I popped my head into the trainer's office and Pete was sitting at the desk. He began by asking me my goals, what I had done in the past, and what my eating habits were like. After a lengthy discussion, he showed me the different pricing options, gave me his recommendations based on my goals, and then asked if I would come back in a few days and revisit the training plan. THIS WAS GREAT! He in no way pressured me into making a payment or commitment on the spot, but gave me time to really think it over. I am grateful for that.
Once we got started, we spent the first week doing basic circuit training so that I could learn the ropes of lifting and whatnot. Pete also spent an entire session with me going over nutrition. Between the diet and training with Pete, I have made a dramatic difference. Friends and family who I hadn't seen in months commented on the physical change they see in me.
When the WSC closed their F Street location, I moved with Pete to 1211 to continue working with him. Pete is incredibly flexible with my crazy work schedule.
I sometimes have to miss a session because of travelling for work. Pete takes the time to sit down with me and write out a workout for me to do on my own time, even without equipment.
I would absolutely recommend working with Pete and using this gym.

Standard health club for DC. Minimal windows, mostly functional cardio equipment, nice front desk staff, basement weight room, and packed spring peak hours. Now that they have many membership tiers available, either for one club, one city, or all cities the parent company runs clubs in.

Have been a member for about 3 months, have the regional pass which is a good price for 6+ gyms all over the DC area.
Ethan Stackpole
Good club, for a relatively reasonable price however some of the machines could use a serious refresh and I wish they would do more to address lock room smells.

Don't be fooled by Vida Fitness's bogus 5-star reviews online (produced by PR company & organized shills - acc. to it's staff), WSC has the real deal, the rate is almost HALF of the Vida's, and gay friendly (PS, Vida is no longer a gay gym, overrun by str8 girls, cameras in men's room, leaking clients' info. too - acc. to it's staff).

Decent gym for what you pay for. Not the cleanest or prettiest but it gets the job done.
David Kampmeyer
It's ok feels like a young crowd. Reminds me of my high-school gym.
I guess i have been spoiled with Golds gym.

The people at WSC, 1211 Connecticut Avenue, NW are very sweet and very helpful. It would be great if there were more classes offered in the morning or after work. Thanks.
Ultra View
Several locations, clean, a wide variety of fitness options, hours of operations, and professional and experienced fitness experts and staff.

Cheap membership available but the equipment is often misplaced, parts are often missing. I guess you get what you pay for.
Jakub Poniatowski
So far so good. Great personal trainers, good equipment, friendly staff.
Jefferson Falk
Small but charming. Nice and helpful staff. Gotta go early in the morning

Old equipment and not the cleanest but good to get a workout in

It's good. It could be great but it's too corporate to get things changed quickly.
