Reviews of CrossFit Renaissance
Randy York
CF Ren is amazing place! Rarely do you find a CrossFit gym that can be so inclusive yet make sure every member is challenged at their own level. All the coaches do a great job in explaining the movements and workouts! Their hard work has created a very inclusive and tight-knit community. I am a very proud member of this gym!

Only gym I've stuck with. I do the scaled down class called Strength & Conditioning which is a Boot Camp-inspired class to build functional strength so I'm not tired and sore from unloading groceries from the car ;). LOVE Coach Jen. We have a great group of people, and we manage to have fun even though working out is NOT my favorite!!

I have been really enjoying my time here! The staff is super nice and helpful. This is not an intimidating gym at all! I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Talk about a gym that really cares! Not once have I felt like I couldn't do something here. The coaches are incredibly adaptive and innovative. They want to make sure everyone can participate in the class. This was complete opposite of what I thought CrossFit was. I'm so glad they changed my perception. They also do fun activities once a month. I truly feel like I've found a sense of community in my local neighborhood. I started here July 2021 and felt apart of the family right away. Now, I can't imagine my life without them.

Coaches are super Technical everyday with the workouts! Great vibe and friendly crossfit gym. Here you matter. You go above and beyond!

I started at Crossfit Renaissance in May 2016 and could not be happier with joining. The coaches take each workout and make it suitable for everyone from beginners to elite athletes. I enjoy the challenge of every new workout, and seeing my progress firsthand when a workout I’ve done before comes around again. It is one of the most amazing gyms I’ve ever been to, with an inclusive and encouraging atmosphere that keeps you coming back. I’ve even encouraged my husband to join and my son attends the youth program. The owners truly care about all of their members like family and have created an incredible community that I’m proud to be a part of.

Joining Crossfit Renaissance was the best decision I ever made! It was the first time I had ever joined any gym or exercise program without a friend or family member. I was terrified. I had no intentions of staying after the six week New You challenge. My results were amazing after just five weeks!!! The coaches are phenomenal. The other members are supportive and encouraging. The workouts are never the same and never boring. You work hard. But the results are worth it. I'm doing things I never thought I could do! I go three times a week and I'm about to join unlimited. The workouts, the people, the atmosphere are all what keep me coming back. I never knew working out could be so much fun! And I never in a million years would have thought I'd be upset and disappointed to miss a class. Your fitness level doesn't matter!!! They will teach you and coach you and won't let you fail! When you reach a goal, a milestone or complete a movement you've feared doing, they celebrate your success with you! If you want results, fun and amazing people....CFR is the to go.First time doing CrossFit and this challenge is awesome! I've discovered I can do a lot of things I thought I could never do thanks to my fantastic coaches, Kevin, Bill, Joe and Ed! They push us to realize that our limits are far beyond what we expect. A great place to learn if you're a beginner.
Sixteen months in and I could not be happier!!! My jeans are four sizes smaller. I have more energy. I hate missing classes. This is the only program I have done where I am consistently showing up and seeing results. The coaches are phenomenal! The classmates are supportive and encouraging. It's a family atmosphere. The only person you compete with is yourself!! No work out is ever the same. Every workout is tough and challenging. I never thought I would be able to do crossfit. But here I am; loving it and getting better every class. You won't find a better group of coaches than the CFR coaches! Looking for something new that works? Come to Crossfit Renaissance!
Update!!!! Almost two years in and still going strong! Making progress and hitting PRs! My favorite part of CFR is that my classmates and coaches have become some of my best friends!

I love this gym! I first joined CrossFit Renaissance back in 2014 and due to scheduling conflict with work and school I only stayed for a couple of months. I joined back in February 2017 and I am extremely happy I did. EVERYONE from the staff, to the coaches, to the fellow gym members are extremely friendly, helpful, and encouraging. There is a strong bond within this gym and I'm proud to be a part of the #CFR Family.
Update to my post 7mths ago....I have been at CrossFit Renaissance for a little over one year and I must say I am extremely happy with my new lifestyle change. CrossFit Renaissance has helped me achieve many goals that I was once either afraid of or felt as though I could not accomplish. I highly recommend CrossFit Renaissance to anyone who is ready to make that change in their life and is looking for a gym that will help you get the results you want.

Update: It's been over a year now and I am NEVER GOING BACK! I have seen such an improvement in my strength & endurance. I still do 'scaled' workouts but I am getting stronger every day, working out with some amazing people
I have been at CFR for about 6 months. Everyone has been so welcoming & all workouts are scaled to my fitness level. So, although some people have been there for years, we’re doing the same workouts, without the burnout.
Michele Mucerino
I joined CFR to become more healthy and active. I have become more stronger and faster in the 1 1/2 years I have been here. I love the different workouts everyday and that I can scale them to my fitness level. The coaches and fellow gym members are supportive, knowledgeable, and cheers everyone on. I would recommend this gym to everyone I know.
Marie Egan (Ree)
I cannot say enough great things about CFR. All of the trainers are very helpful and encouraging.
Joanne Kiel
I have been going to Crossfit Renaissance for 10 months. I have joined many gyms in my life and never last more than a few months. I go to CFR 4-5 times a week! The community is warm and welcoming and love to support each other in making our own goals. There is no work out I cannot do, because the coaches will always find an alternative for me if I cannot do a skill, or if I have an injury. The best part is, my body is stronger and healthier than it has ever been! I came to build up some muscle and lose a little weight. Not only has that happened, but I have made friends with some really amazing people.

By far the best CrossFit gym ever! When I first moved to Philly i decided I wanted to try out CrossFit, so after doing a couple of "beginner" classes in a few gyms around the city i stumbled upon CrossFit Renaissance, lucky me! The coaches were super helpful and very encouraging. CrossFit was just something I was going to do for a couple of months until I got into a routine and figured out a gym schedule for myself, but it was so hard not to come back, two years later here i am! The members at the gym have been very encouraging and super welcoming since day one, seriously... If you want to get a good work out, need motivation or new to working out... this is where you need to go!
Jim Denofa
This is what it is all about! Hard work, incredible staff, clean, inviting atmosphere, no frilly foo foo nonsense. CrossFit Renaissance is what a gym should be, with all of the equipment you need to get strong, fast and fit.
Bill and Joyce are incredible owners who genuinely care about the success of their members. It is obvious that their people are their priority. There are so many people at CFR that have changed their lives for the better forever. I am inspired every time I'm here.
By far the BEST gym in Philadelphia.
Victoria Nanarone
Best decision I’ve ever made, only regret is not signing up sooner!! I was always under the impression I had to get my butt in shape BEFORE stepping foot in a Crossfit gym and I couldn’t have been more wrong. All works out are scaled to your level but still a challenge and the sense of accomplishment once you’re done will keep you coming back for more! Coaches are super knowledgeable and truly care about you and your goals and the members are second to none. Highly recommend scheduling a “No Sweat Intro” if you’re even slightly curious.. you won’t regret it!
Alexis Kumasaka
I've been coming to CFR for 2.5 years. I was never an athletic person, but CrossFit is the only thing that has ever helped me change my mentality about exercise and helped me change my habits to learn to be more active. Going to the gym isn't something unpleasant I have to force myself to do. I always feel accomplished and glad when I go. It's been a great way to meet more people in my neighborhood and I love how supportive everyone is, whether they just started or have been coming to the gym for years. If you've ever been too intimidated to try out any gym, COME to CFR!! It won't take you long to realize it is one of the most welcoming places, full of regular people with a wide range of abilities. You'll fit right in :-)
Jennifer Adams
I am still relatively new to Crossfit, having been a member for 14 months now. I have never before committed to a gym until I came to CFR. It is a big part of my life now. I feel stronger and more flexible physically, mentally and emotionally. The staff is always available and there to encourage and push you. Veteran members are supportive and welcoming. No matter what level of fitness, we are all one community!
Jim Rastogi-Wilson
I highly recommend CrossFit Renaissance! I have been a member since summer 2013 and their mantra “Results. Not Hype” is absolutely true. In my past exercise history, I’ve gotten stuck in the “regular” gym routine of treadmill and weight machine monotony, only to find myself getting bored, not seeing consistent results, and eventually reverting back to periods of inactivity. CFR has changed all that – they offer a different kind of gym experience that is motivating, challenging, supportive, and addictive.
If you are unfamiliar with the CrossFit style of exercise that CFR offers – it involves small groups, functional movements, a different high intensity workout each day, motivational coaches, personalized attention, and friendly competition. This is what I needed to break my old workout habits and start seeing real results.
The workouts may seem intimidating at first, but at CrossFit Renaissance, every workout and movement is scaled to your ability, so it doesn’t matter what your current fitness level is. I also appreciate how the coaches take the time to explain all movements and help push, instruct, and motivate whenever needed. From the minute I joined, owners Bill and Joyce made me feel welcome as part of the CFR family and continually motivate me to reach my fitness goals.

There are so many reasons to love Crossfit Renaissance! Most importantly, I always get a great workout. I've been a member for 10 months and have never done the same workout twice. I literally get excited to wake up and see the Workout of the Day posted online. The people, both coaches and fellow members, are the warmest, most welcoming group of people you could wish to be around. The space is huge, making it a comfortable for any size group. I've been to other crossfit gyms that are shoeboxes in comparison. It's so much more comfortable at Renaissance where you have your own space to work out. I was a regular exerciser before crossfit (traditional gyms, yoga, running, lithe method). I joined in the hopes of trying something new; I didn't necessarily expect that I'd see/feel a difference in my body since I had been working out regularly and was a healthy weight when I joined. To my surprise, my body both feels and looks so different. I'm SO much stronger and have muscles and definition in places I didn't know I could. After having a child 3 years ago, and having a surgery that left a large incision from my belly button to my underwear line, I thought getting "abs" was not possible for me. But with the workouts and coach guidance at Crossfit Renaissance, my abs have never looked so defined. Even more important, though, is how much I look forward to going to CFR and truly enjoy my time there with the awesome coaches and fellow members. If you're looking for a great workout beside great people of all shapes, sizes, and colors, CFR is the place for you!

Update - I still believe CFR is a great place to be if you want to get your life back on track! They have everything you need to get healthy!! Workout classes, one on one, nutrition, PT!! It’s a family, we cheer each other on, we push each other to be better, we check on each other to make we are held accountable! Give it a try, you will never regret it!!
I along with many others, I’m sure, was very scared to join a Crossfit gym. I hadn’t done anything remotely physical in many years. I had attended at Wine & WOD (not knowing what to do!) and it changed my outlook on Crossfit!! Still scared, I did my Goal Session with Bill, and he truly put me at ease. I signed my name on the dotted line, making the best decision to get on track, to have a better, healthy life! The coaches at Crossfit Renaissance are so supportive. They work with you at your level, they teach you the correct way to lift, or jump rope. Another aspect of Crossfit that I enjoy is the family feeling. Coaches and members cheer you on, they push to push beyond your limit. They help you to reach your goals!!
Beth Blinebury
Crossfit Renaissance is a solid gym with the best, down-to-earth trainers. You will work your butt off and challenge yourself in ways you've never imagined (and actually enjoy it)!
There are a variety of membership options to fit everyone's commitment level. There are also a bunch of classes on a daily basis so it's easy to fit a workout into your schedule.
I've belonged to another CrossFit gym in the past and never felt really connected to the staff and the other members. I feel completely different at CrossFit Renaissance. I've been a member for 6 months and I can't imagine ever leaving. ;)

Joining the Crossfit Renaissance family is the greatest decision I've made in years! When I say family, I mean it. I did some research on their website and decided that I wanted to give it a chance. I emailed them and received a response in no time. I talked to Ed and we discussed which of the many programs I was interested in. I decided to take the "on ramp" course, which teaches technique and prepares for class. Ed worked around my awful work schedule and fit me in for my first class the next day! When I arrived Ed and I sat down to go over goals and expectations. Ed broke my down my goals and gave me some valuable insight. Bill was my coach for my first on ramp class. The fact that I haven't exercised in years and didn't know hardly anything about proper lifting, did not phase him a bit. He pushed me through the class and I have to say it was the most challenging workout I've done at that time. However, it was also the most rewarding. I never thought that I could ever do those exercises. After regaining my composure, I felt amazing and that is EXACTLY how you will feel after every class you attend. The exercises are tough but with the motivation of this crossfit family, you will get through them. I go to crossfit twice a week and I noticed results in a little as four sessions. Without a diet change, I lost 7 stubborn pounds in a month and a half. Currently I'm a little over two months in and I've made slight diet improvements. I'm happy to say that I've lost 11 pounds and down a entire pant size. I fit in shirts I haven't worn in two years. Most importantly, I am stronger than I've been in 5 years. I, like some people, was apprehensive about the pricing. Thinking to myself "a gym membership is so much cheaper" etc etc. Looking back on it now, I almost want to laugh. Yes it is more expensive than a typical gym. However, when you breakdown the pricing (per session) and you consider the cost of a coach being with you the entire workout, it's completely reasonable. Crossfit Renaissance is a high quality product and is worth every penny. For the coaches this isn't just a job, this is their passion. They will do whatever they can to help you reach your goals. They are uber approachable. So shoot them a email, even if you just want to check the place out. The only regret you will have, is not coming in sooner.

There is literally nothing bad that can be said about this gym, the owners, the coaches, or its members. I was hesitant to start here (9 weeks ago) because of a completely misguided misconception of what CrossFit was and the type of folks who did it. This is the most welcoming and encouraging gym I've ever been a part of. No matter what your current Fitness level is, I highly recommend you give CrossFit Renaissance chance.

I found Crossfit Renaissance through an ad on Facebook for the New You Challenge.
I am a mom of 5 year old twins, and hadn’t worked out consistently since they were born. The New You Challenge felt managable – 6 weeks of 3 days a week. I saw it as a way to jumpstart a new workout routine and take some time for me. After 6 weeks I was hooked, and 11 months later I am still working out at CFR 3-4 days a week.
Crossfit Renaissance is an awesome place to work out. The owners and coaches are knowledgeable, and encouraging. I am constantly amazed by the people I work out with – they work hard, they are focused on improving, they are positive, and they are FUN.
I am stronger physically and mentally, and there is no end in sight. Give it a try!

The best second chance I ever gave anything or anyone! I tried Crossfit about 3 years ago, didn't get it. This time I did the New You Challenge, take it slower, learn, & I got so much more!!! Family, friends, challenges daily!! I've become part of an amazing gym with wonderful people that encourage & push you to be better, work harder, challenge yourself!! As long as I keep showing up, the possibilities are endless!
Juan Sostre
So like everyone else was sort of terrified of joining a CrossFit gym. I wasn't really in shape, felt like I was going to walk in and get gymtimated. Instead, I found a really cool place, with great people and I can genuinely say made some good friends. We do stuff outside of the gym together which really helped to keep me coming back.
Also, the coaches are fantastic. If you come in tell them 7:30 sent you :-).

The Crossfit Renaissance experiance has only been a positive one during my 8 months (and counting) at CFR. Having a wrestling background, the regular "globo gyms" did not offer enough to keep me there for more than a month at a time. I would easily become burnt out and had no drive to progress any more, it was only a matter of time before I became one of those people who had a "gym membership" but never went to the gym. After hearing about Crossfit for sometime, I decided to try it, and never looked back.
The minute I walked into CFR I knew I was in the right place. BIll (CFR owner and head coach) only instilled confidence in me that I was in the right place. Bill's free intro session elaborated on his background in Crossfit, weight lifting, olympic lifting, nutrition, and direction of his crossfit gym gave me the confidence that this wasn't a regular globo gym.
During the first three months the coaching staff at CFR had opened my mind to really pushing myself. This was done safely and with the proper techniques so that as I progressed I would not hurt myself, but also gave me the confidence to really push myself and make the goals that I have set. Coaching hasn't stopped after being there for 8 months, every day I walk in, there is constant coaching that is make improvements in me. No matter what your goals or fitness background, after being at CFR I have seen the expertise from the coaching staff to help you reach your goals.
The atmosphere is great at CFR, people are open, and you find yourself being the biggest fan to everyone no matter their skill or fitness level. CFR is laid back before and after workouts, and you find yourself making friends at CFR that you wouldn't at a regular globo gym.
Overall, I'm hooked, I look forward to going to the gym now, the Crossfit Renaissance experiance has only improved my life. I have way more energy during long work days, and I notice a large increase in confidence within myself that extends to everything I do in life.
Stop in and give it a try, chances are you enjoy it and stay.

I joined CrossFit Renaissance for the New You Challenge. My aunt talked me into going and she bailed and I stayed. The challenge required you to attend class 3 nights a week. Throughout the program I was amazed at the things I was doing that I never thought I would be able to do. The challenge program ended in December and it is March and I absolutely still love coming. The people are amazing - it really is a family environment. The support that you receive whether you are new or have been there for years you just can't find anywhere else.

I joined Crossfit Renaissance about a year and a half ago. Crossfit is the most intense workout I have ever done. Many times I have wanted to quit because it was too hard. I stuck with it and learned a lot about myself. I learned that I am stronger than I thought I was, both physically and mentally. This wouldn't have happened if I didn't receive encouragement from my trainers and the other members. I am surrounded by people who want me to succeed. The training from the coaches is absolutely incredible. They take the time to ensure that I am doing everything properly. I notice improvement every day. I used to be bored doing the same routine at other gyms. Crossfit is constantly varied. I am working out my entire body, not just one body part at a time. I feel like this is much more effective and relatable to the real world. I feel stronger than ever and always look forward to coming back for more.

My experiences at Crossfit Renaissance has been, and continues to be a transforming experience. When I joined, I had no idea what Crossfit was or what it entailed, I just wanted the amazing results. I started just two months after having my first child and I had no previous athletic experience. I was able to lose all the weight I gained during my pregnancy and more! I found that having no previous athletic experience did not hinder my progress. The coaches at Crossfit Renaissance are able to tailor the WOD ( workout of the day) to any level of athlete, from beginner to expert. The coaches also take into consideration my personal strengths and help me improve skills that challenge me. The workouts are extremely challenging but the benefits are well worth it. In addition to the obvious benefit of losing all 65 pounds I gained during pregnancy there were other benefits I had not anticipated. I found that I had less anxiety and was more active in general. I feel that my general health has improved. I also get excellent nutritional guidance that has helped me change my diet for the better. I also love the community aspect of Crossfit. During a workout, there is no judgment and everyone is extremely supportive which enables you to feel comfortable to push yourself and achieve the best results. In addition, the owners Bill and Joyce encourage the community aspect of Crossfit with regular social gatherings. All in All, I couldn't be happier with the Crossfit Renaissance experience.

I started out in March of 2016 at 293 pounds, hadn't exercised in 3+ years, & was still reeling from the sudden death of my 19 year old stepson just 2 months prior. Talk about zero motivation level. But from the moment I walked through the doors of Crossfit Renaissance, I was met with supportive & motivating people (both the coaches & other members) that encourage me to go further than I would ever push myself. The coaches are VERY knowledgeable and are always watching and guiding us to make sure movements are done properly for effectiveness and to prevent injury. It doesn't matter where you are at on a fitness level, be it a beginner or a seasoned athlete... every workout can be scaled/tailored by the coaches to best suit your condition/situation. The weight loss I have experienced has of course been awesome (30 pounds in the first 3 months), but just as thrilling as that is how I feel. I have energy. I feel strong. My family would probably tell you I'm less irritable. To see the numbers on the barbells go up & to be able to do exercises/movements now that were near impossible for me just a few short months ago is exhilarating. Is it hard? Yes, but anything worth it is. If you want change, no matter where you are currently at, please know that it IS possible if you are willing to put the work in. A few months ago, I couldn't imagine doing Crossfit. Now, I can't imagine my life without it. Crossfit Renaissance has given me my life back.

I was so tired of the monotony of working out at places like Ballys. Weight lifting one day, cardio the next. Working out was so booring. I was looking for an exercise program that would be interesting, challenging and fun. Turned out Crossfit Renaissance was just right around the corner, and exactly what I had in mind. Since I have joined I have become stronger, faster, and lighter. I am in the best shape of my life and I just turned 34. The workouts are always varied so everyday is interesting. I always look forward to training and competing with the coaches and members. The coaches are all very knowledgable and the atmosphere in this place is amazing. I have been to many other crossfit gyms but none motivate like CFR.
And thats why I have been a member for over 3 years!

I am at a stage of life where I want to be healthier and better than I have been so I bought a groupon at the end of last summer for Cross fit Renaissance and it took me over two months to officially take myself there to use it.
I was initially afraid and intimidated to walk in there by myself even though two of my friends had been members there since it opened. What would they think of me? How would I be treated? I am not an olympic athlete nor am I the guru of fitness! I finally sucked it up and went and now I am truly annoyed that I wasted 2 1/2 months of training by being afraid of going.
I have found an amazing group of people at this gym- always friendly, always encouraging-always there to push me to get the job done. I have found that I am stronger than I ever imagined. I am always getting better and a little faster. I have even got to put my name on the leader board and expect more to come.
I amaze myself sometimes and sometimes I am disgusted with myself but Bill and Joyce(owners), Ray, and Reese (trainers) encourage me and get me out of my funk! There are many times that I might be the last one finishing a workout(that is ok because the only one I am competing with is myself) and the the other members stick around and give me the motivation that I need to finish. I work out with some amazing athletes/people that make me excited to go to Cross fit Renaissance.
This has been a life changing experience for me on multiple levels. I am a work in progress and have not perfected everything but they work with me and train me-sometimes over and over :) until I understand it. I have a level of comfort there that I never had at any other "gym". I like the training and attention. I like the personal touch. I like the family like atmosphere. However, most of all, I like the way it makes me feel. You should really give it a try!

CrossFit Renaissance has really changed my life for the better. I haven't been to any other crossfit gyms (or boxes) before but I have been at CFR since 2011 and haven't found any reason to venture off.
My wife and I joined and no one confused us with athletes. I did some high school sports 10 years ago and she walked out of more P.E. classes than she participated in. We quickly fell in love the workouts that weren't boring and results came pretty quickly for us losing something around 45-50lbs between us. We never really tracked the results.
Their space is the largest in town, but what really sets them apart is that Bill and Joyce, the owners, are more interested in having fun with their friends rather than producing the next CrossFit games champions. Make no mistake the workouts are serious and you will get pushed to work harder than the limits your minds puts on your body.
Coming here casually wont really do it. When you walk in the huge roll-up doors expect to work hard and make some great friends. There are always reasons people are getting together outside the gym. Might be a BBQ or moiving help or dance recitals or school fundraisers. These people you work out with become your tribe. Being a part of the tribe has intangible benefits, like the little army of people are at the gym who are watching your kid while you are working out.

I've been to other Crossfit gyms before and the coaching at Crossfit Renaissance is truly top notch. All of the coaches are experts in lifting and exercise techniques and they lead and inspire others by example.
I've always been active but joining Crossfit Renaissance has definitely changed my mindset toward fitness. Whereas before I saw going to the gym and eating healthy as an obligation, I now see fitness as a natural part of life.
For anyone who is looking to make an investment in their future health, which is one of the most valuable investments you can make, I highly recommend Crossfit Renaissance.

If I could give this place a million stars, I would. It is truly amazing and will change your life for sure. I was an athlete in various capacities for many many years before moving to Philadelphia to start school. I was lost when I first moved to Philly, though, because I didn't have my usual athletic outlet to escape the rigors of day-to-day life. I dabbled in competitive running, body pump classes at my school's gym and personal trainers, but, nothing was really doing it for me. I checked out Crossfit Renaissance (CFR) about 13-14 months ago- did a month long trial and IMMEDIATELY fell in love. Crossfit, in general, pushes you to the max and allows you to achieve things you never felt possible. Honestly, given that I had "retired" from my sport of choice in 2011, I didn't think I would ever achieve NEW athletic goals. But, through CFR, I have. CFR is really special and honestly stands above other crossfit gyms in my opinion. Firstly, the staff is remarkable-I've had MANY trainers, coaches, physiotherapists etc. work with me throughout my career and the coaches at CFR have the expertise and wisdom to "hang" with any of the people I've worked with in the past. I felt like all the trainers at CFR knew what they were doing AND knew ME. Meaning, in any given workout, they seemed to know what I could handle, what was too much for me and even knew when I was perhaps being lazy and needed an extra push. They truly care about their members. Also, the other other members of CFR really make the place that much more special. Truly remarkable people from all walks of life who honestly inspire you every single work out. I've made new friends through crossfit (and new friends are always a good thing!) Lastly, I need to mention the facility-it's HUGE, has everything you need and you have the space and equipment to conquer any xfit workout. They also have TIRES you can flip through the huge parking lot-turned-torture-chamber. (It's.amazing. you'll love it). I made the mistake of going to another crossfit gym while out of town, and the lack of space really made the workout hard to complete and I found myself missing the people and trainers at CFR the whole time. Anywhow, this is a very long review but you MUST check this place out if you're shopping for an xfit gym. It's the best EVER.

For years I'd just go to a regular gym, do my sets and work until I'd feel a little tired then leave. I was bored with the repetition and felt like I was losing motivation to work out. As a woman, sometimes it can feel a little intimidating walking into the gym's area with the free weights and I didn't want to solely do cardio. A friend had told me about CrossFit, but I was nervous to try it because it seemed so hard and I wasn't sure I was up for the challenge. I saw a Groupon for CFR and I figured that was a sign to give it a shot. I started slowly, just using the bar alone without weights for some workouts. That could be intimidating in a room full of fit people, who have weights stacked on their bars. However, everyone was so encouraging and kind from day 1 and I quickly felt comfortable. CFR has a really great community of members. I trust Bill and the rest of the coaches to guide me on how to do the movements correctly, with the appropriate amount of weight for me to use. Every day is something different and I'm never bored, I look forward to finding out what the workout of the day is. I'll admit it, now I'm addicted! Whereas before I would work until I was tired and feel like that was time to stop the workout, now I push myself beyond where I thought I could go. There aren't sufficient words to explain the sense of accomplishment you feel after finishing a physical challenge you may have previously thought you couldn't handle. When I have a long day at the office, it feels so good to go release the stress and pent up energy to fuel my workouts. I feel the difference in my strength, and I see the changes in my body. I'm coming up on a year at CFR and I am only sorry I didn't start sooner!

I joined CFR in late October 2014. My only regret is not finding it earlier. I am sure there are CF gyms closer to me (I drive 15 minutes to get there), but the people and experience make it worth it. You won't ever feel judged, everyone is friendly, and while it has a learning curve, the coaches guide you every step of the way. Safety is integral to this gym. So if striving for your personal best and ennoying your workout is what you want, check out CFR.

It doesn't matter what shape you're in, what age you are, everyone is welcomed with open arms.
In January, I decided I needed to do something about my weight. I am not getting any younger and I am the biggest I have ever been in my life. I found myself getting out of breath just walking from the parking lot to my office and I couldn't motivate myself to do anything about it. I was always kind of a loner when it came to working out, so I was reluctant to visit the gym.
After my first meeting I decided to join the 6 week new you challenge. I still wasn't sure I would fit in and I almost left before I even started the first night. I am so glad I didn't leave!
I completed the challenge and feel better than I have in years. Do not misunderstand, I hurt after the workouts, but the more I workout the quicker I recuperate. I am slowly losing weight and getting in shape and for the first time in my life, I am actually losing weight the right way, by eating healthy and exercising.
I attend classes several times a week. The staff is awesome! They are knowledgeable and patient. The encouragement you get from everyone, staff and members alike, is second to none. It truly feels like a family! I cannot believe I actually cannot wait to go to the gym! I recommend anyone wanting to get in shape or just find a welcoming place to be challenged and workout, CFR is the place! #cfrfamily #cfrstrong

I joined CFR almost 2 years ago. I was getting bored with running and other gyms and needed a change. I didn't know much about Crossfit but knew it would be a welcome change. The workouts offer a challenge I couldn't get at regular gyms.
The staff at CFR are very supportive. They can scale a workout for anyone or anything. I recently had a foot injury(not related to CFR) and had a to wear a boot for 6 weeks. Bill told me to bring a skateboard in and before you knew it when everyone else was running I was rowing with my boot on the skateboard!! I was also able to continue most workouts without jeopardizing the healing of my foot.
I have seen welcome results in the shape of my body. (Would be better if I watched my diet better!!!)
CFR is close to home for me, has a varied amount of times for classes and a welcoming staff

CrossFit Renaissance is one of the best choices I ever made in my life. I knew I needed a gym that could provide support from both trainers and as well as members which is exactly what I found at CrossFit Renaissance. They offer a variety of classes in nutrition, crossfit, boot camps and even have a Renaissance Youth program for kids and teenagers. Bill and all the coaches have in-depth knowledge in Crossfit, weight/cardio training and have the expertise to help one reach all their fitness and personal goals. All the coaches take the time out to point if your not doing something correctly and how to address it and also recognize when your exceling at something. Also if you are a parent you can bring your little kids as there is a play area and TV to entertain them. The gym is clean and in a pretty convenient location right off of I-95. There is always something interested going on whether it is monthly contests or house competitions. If your looking to get back in shape or need a change, I highly recommend CrossFit Renaissance.

I've always been an active person, playing competitive sports up through college and doing things like running, martial arts, etc. But I always HATED going to the gym. I read some good things about Crossfit and after doing some research decided to give CF Renaissance a try as they have a lot of daily classes that accommodate my schedule. I started with some hesitation, however, as over the years I developed severe osteoarthritis in my left shoulder and was experiencing significant pain and lack of shoulder mobility. In fact, several surgeons told me I was a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery. However, Bill and the other coaches at CF Renaissance started me off slow and scaled many of the workouts for me. Since starting at CF Renaissance I've build up considerable strength AND endurance and now I'm doing mostly the prescribed workouts and my shoulder pain has all but disappeared and my shoulder mobility has improved tremendously! I went from a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery to a (almost) pain-free 47 year old who is now doing most of the workouts as prescribed and running circles around "kids" half my age!
I joined in February 2014 and 7 months later I'm loving it and can honestly say I'm in the best shape of my life. CF Renaissance has challenged me both physically and mentally and the strides I have made in 7 short months simply amaze me!

The short of it: CFR is full of great, down-to-earth people and will help you get healthier and more fit than you've ever been.
The long of it:
December, 2012 I was about 50 pounds overweight and had zero athletic ability. My brother had been doing CrossFit for many years and had told me about it. To be honest, the idea of pushing myself so hard physically intimidated me. My girlfriend has been an athlete most of her life and was concerned about how much my sedentary lifestyle was damaging my health. We both signed up to join CrossFit Renaissance's gym and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I changed my life.
Today I'm about 40lbs lighter, eating healthier and feeling more confident in myself. If you are someone like me who has never really been at a healthy wieght, I can't understate how great it is when you finally learn to love getting up and moving as much as you enjoy watching great TV. My personal favorite exercises are the Olympic weightlifting movements. There are few things as satisfying as lifting something over your head that you once thought was immovable.
CrossFit gets a reputation as being unsafe and full of self-centered "bros." CFR shattered that idea as soon as I came in and met the staff. As for safety, you are always pushed to your limits but that limit is set by your own abilities. If you can't do a movement with correct form, you will not be pushed to do that movement. If a workout is too heavy or intense for your current fitness level they work with you to find a modification that will still provide you with a challenge while not excluding you from getting work done. You can't do a push-up? That's okay! It won't help your progress if you just lay there, struggling. They will find an exercise that will get you there. I've seen someone go from not being able to do a single pull-up to being able to crank out 5 or six pull-ups with 20lbs of weight hanging from their waist. All along the way, they are getting encouragement from staff as well as other, more experienced members.
This brings me to the culture of CrossFit Renaissance. The gym staff cultivates an encouraging and humorous attitude toward fitness. If a workout kicks your ass you can bet that you'll have someone cheering you on. The staff's interest in athletics is infectious and is a major factor in my weight loss. Feeling uncomfortable is a major reason people stop going to a gym. CFR always makes you feel welcome and since they focus on your goals you won't feel compared to others. There is a healthy mix of friendly competition and admiration when someone near your fitness level achieve a new record.
Check them out. Get stronger! Get faster! Be happier!

Love it.... Best move I've ever made. Everyone is nice and motivational. The workouts are different everyday and they're hard. You need to have an open mind coming in everyday and be ready to work hard. I had did crossfit before, but I didn't like it. I got thrown into a class or two and didn't know what I was doing, so I stopped. I was also boxing at the time as well too. I stopped boxing and stopped working out completely for about a year a half. I was getting ready to graduate college and severely out of shape like to the point where I got to a sloppy 285lbs. I always said if I was going to get back in the gym, it was going to be boxing or crossfit, but I got tired of getting punched in the head and a few friends of mine had come to the gym and had nothing but good things to say about it. It took about a month of looking at the site and watching videos on instagram to get enough courage to fill out the information on the website. Bill Shiffler called me. At first, we played phone tag a few times before setting up a meeting. I went and met with him for about fifteen minutes to a half hour and I had my concerns and explained to him that I had done this before, but really didn't know what I was doing. We talked and I just said to hell with it and gave it another shot. Bill and I did one on one personal training for a long period of time. He introduced me to the different movements and pretty much what I would be getting into when doing the workouts.
As a result at CFR, I found that nothing is impossible. I'm a big dude and some of the things that we do, I'm shocked I can even do. When I first started, I couldn't squat and now I can squat close to 400lbs. I never been able to do pull-ups before and now I can. I basically found that if you're willing to put in the work, than really nothing is impossible. It is like anything, just stay consistent and you'll be successful in whatever it is your trying to accomplish.
There are many things that have changed as a result of CFR. One of the things that has changed is my outlook on things. I have a more positive attitude and am not as negative as I once was. I feel stronger and am in the best shape of my life. I have a more open mind toward my everyday routine and look forward to waking up and getting through the day. Before I started, I was in a bad place and was just flat out miserable. As I stated above, I watched a lot of the instagram videos and just said try it and see what happens. It was the best move I ever made. My body is a lot leaner than it was when I first started. I've made some wonderful new friends although we might be different, we share a common goal and that is to show up and get our butts kicked doing these form of workouts.
The benefits of crossfit are that you will leave everyday after doing a workout and want to come back for more. You will feel in the best shape you have ever felt in your whole life. You will have a more positive outlook on things and you'll be surrounded by a great group of people who will support you when doing these workouts. Your not going to be doing this alone. There will always be a support system because it is hard and to do this, a support system is needed to get you through it. I absolutely would recommend this gym. It will be the best move you'll ever make. Just have an open mind to it.

At first I was like there's no way I could do the things they wanted me to do. I had a trusted friend already going to CFR and was told just to make an appointment and talk to Bill. At that time I was 47 years old, hypertension/270 LBS stopped smoking for 6 months. I was ready to get myself moving towards a healthier life style. I am a member for 3 months I've lost 4 inch's on my waist in that time Blood pressure 116/80 and feel stronger everyday. The workout's are no joke, if you want to be challenged Bill and the lads will give you all that and the support you need to be successful.
Looking forward to the goals I set for myself I believe CFR was the right choice to achieve them. If you have questions like I did, all you have to do is reach out and make that call it will change your life!!!

I came to CrossFit Renaissnance about a year ago and my life and body has changed forever. Myself, being a 46 year old "weekend warrior", was in search of a new fitness plan. Joining a "standard" gym wasn't appealing to me and working out at home was turning into a chore to get myself off the couch. I wanted more of a primal/organic workout experience. Then about a year ago I passed by CFR and saw people walking along the street holding up kettle bells as they struggled to get back to the "box" as I soon found out what a CrossFit gym is called. As I pulled into the parking lot there were others there flipping a large tractor tire. I had a feeling that I found my spot. I went in and met Bill, the owner and head coach of CFR, and he showed me around. Now let me tell you, don't expect high end workout machines, mirrors on the walls or people standing around posing. What you will find though is everything you need to change your life, period. There are dumbbells, barbells, kettle bells, ropes, medicine balls, benches, racks, pull-up bars, everything but fluff. After talking with Bill about what I was looking for and listening to what he can offer I was sold. If that wasn't enough, the next day I received a Groupon offer for CFR.
Now a year later my life is completely changed. I look better, feel better and eat better than I ever have. Bill and Joyce have been there every step of the way with support, advice, inspiration and friendship. I have many new friends at CFR who push and support each other. The "normal" aches and pains that I attributed to getting old are gone. The low energy feeling, gone. The mid-forties stomach, gone. What is here now is a more energized, stronger person that is ready to tackle whatever comes down the road.
In closing I will let you know the secret to CrossFit:
1. Show up
2. Train hard
3. Recover
4. Repeat
That's it. Easy.

I am not one to write reviews. I usually just read them and keep it moving. But I have to give a shout out to Crossfit Renaissance.
Fact: I am a mother of 3
Fact: I have never been over weight but I struggled with muscle definition and pull-ups
Fact: I was in search of a workout that would not bore me to death
Fact: I hate to run anything over 100 meters
I saw a FB friend pictures and I asked her how did you get that body? She said you should come and check out Crossfit Renaissance. So I will fast forward to August 2012 my intro class at Crossfit Renaissance. I ran, squatted, did push-ups and pull–ups and I’ve been hooked every since!! The workouts and coaches will not let you settle or get bored EVER! It is an encouraging family environment. Just when you think you can't do another front squat you'll hear everyone yelling your name telling you to pull through you got it! I didn't get that type of encouragement at the YMCA and you better not drop the weights on the floor!
Fast forward again September 2013 and I am preparing for my first figure competition with the help of the lead coach and owner of Crossfit Renaissance Bill Shiffler along with coahes Reese and Ray.
Fact: I am still a mother of 3
Fact: Still not overweight but have achieved visible muscle definition and can do at least 7 strict pull ups
Fact: I have found a workout that has not bored me
Fact: I still hate to run … anything over 2k
Finding the right “box” aka crossfit gym is very personal, like finding the right dentist, proctologist and GYN (you get my point). Put in the time you will definitely get the results.

Ive been going here for about 8 months now and have really loved everything about it. It is hard and challenging and incredibly rewarding. As someone pretty new to most of the exercises and movements that are essential to CrossFit, I've really appreciated the way all of the coaches and staff have been so helpful in getting to not just complete the workouts, but to make sure that I do it correctly.
When I started, I had chronic knee pain that two surgies couldnt fix and had been suffering from sleep apnea for a few years. Now, my knee discomfort only pops up now and then, and i don;t think i could ven qualify it as pain. And my sleep apnea almost never occurs. I owe this to CrossFit Renaissance. They have really helped me change my life for the better. I've lost weight, gained strength and am now much more confident in my own skin. If you want to make a change for the bettter in your life but need help with the how, or need someone to help motivate you, this is the place!

Joined this crew almost 6 months ago, and couldn't be happier with the decision. As a martial arts instructor myself, I'm always looking for the next thing to help ramp up my training. I tried weightlifting years ago and hated it (got hurt due to a bad trainer) but with this crew I can't wait to get in and get to work. Stop in and check it out for yourself, you regret it.

Gem of a gym. Coaches here flex to your skills and have a truly tailored approach for fitness. Everyone genuinely cares and considers what will help you meet your goals.

Two years ago I was at that point in my life where I needed to stop making excuses and start an exercise program. Day after day I would see a few guys running in/out of a garage directly behind my house. I thought, this isn't for me. Then I would see a few women coming in/out. I was even more curious when I would hear funny noises and lots of banging day after day. Finally, I decided to take a walk over. I have to say I was a little intimidated watching some of the current members working out. That same day, I started my intro course and have never looked back.
I have met and have a lot of respect for all of the current and new members at CFR. Bill, Joyce, Ray and Reese really push you to your limit. Always willing to help you. Every WOD is a great challenge. When I started, I couldn't even do one push up and recently just did 800 pushups LOL! Never thought I'd be doing that in my 40's. I have so much more confidence in myself then I ever had.
Thank You Bill and Joyce for all of your help these past two years.
Thank You to Ray, Reese and all of the CFR members for all of the motivation.

I’m just about a year into consistent training with Crossfit Renaissance and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made for my health and well being. You’ll feel more exhausted and more exhilarated at the same time from a Planet Fitness.
