Reviews of Prospect Park YMCA
The pool is clean however it can get super busy during busy hours (frequently 3-4 people sharing one lane). Sometimes they close a lane for classes which doesn't help. Also like others have mentioned, they don't enforce the fast lane, everyone can swim in it, including the slower swimmers. I hope they have longer pool hours given how popular it gets.
One of the best public fitness facilities I've to workout. Offers all type of classes on health and wellness.
Great family atmosphere with no attitude. Amazing aquatics program with not one but two swimming pools (the new one really needs to be seen to be appreciated). Staff is friendly and helpful.
On the plus side, all of the staff here always been very nice and the pricing is, of course, quite good compared to high-end corporate gyms like NYSC or Equinox.
My main complaint is that I am a competitive (masters) swimmer and I actually go here to train. There is absolutely zero attempt to police/enforce who goes in the fast lane. When I brought it up to the aquatics director, I was told, "We can't do this." Why not? Some people have no real idea how fast (or slow) they swim. There should be clear signage saying you should not swim in the fast lane unless you can maintain a pace of 25 seconds per lap. Anyone causing people to queue up in the lane should be asked to move to a slower lane. Another solution would be to have a single training lane certain times of the day for competitive swimmers, triathletes, etc.
Also, there are people who stand in the lap lanes and do stretches and dance poses. Lap lanes are for laps. If you want to do dance poses, do it during adult free swim. If you want to do warm-up or warm-down stretches, do them on the pool deck. Again, there is no enforcement.
I also don't understand why we still have truncated hours, in light of the state's loosening of restrictions. The pool and gym should return to being opened until 11:00 PM. 3 PM on the weekends is just ridiculous while we continue to pay full price.
Go early on weekends. The pool isn't too busy then. I don't go to the gym parts so I don't know about that, but i imagine it's the same. Also about 5 pm on a weeknight isnt bad either. Women's changing area has 2 blow dryers. I rent a locker and keep towels and toiletries and a spare bathing suit in it so I don't need to schlep stuff to work and then to the Y when I go after work
I used to go there just for swimming. They got two pools one small and one big. Very clean and organized gym
This place is great. The staff is helpful if you lose something, and helps you with weights if you need it. The community here are pretty chill they aren't rude and mostly mind their own business unless you need help. Equipment isn't rusty and old and this place looks really clean with things for everyone to do.
2 pools, lots of classes, lots of equipment. Bathrooms and locker rooms are generally clean (although I've sometimes wished the showers were cleaner). Class instructors are friendly although general staff isn't as much. Overall, no major complaints.
This place is huge! I went on a day pass and did laps in the pool. The big pool is great, wonderful for laps. It was busy but not busy enough that you had to wait to get in. Make sure you bring a swim cap, it's required for the pool. The only down side is this place is a bit of a maze, and to get to the big pool from the locker room you have to go down some stairs, and there isn't super clear signage. People were helpful in directions though
Thanks 'Prospect Park Y' ...you have been there for as long as I can remember for us! I attended 'Camp Friendship' in Maine (the State) with this Y when I was very young... two times ...and the 'Summer Camp' program for 'I don't know how many years as an adolescent.
The new pool is one of the best in the whole city! The 'aquatic center' renovation (showers, pools, steam room, lockers) is awesome... really brought it all up to an excellent level! They had a great 'pool program' when I was a kid (I achieved 'polliwog' & 'Shark' I believe in the 'Junior Lifeguard program during the 70s) ...and still do today. A lifeguard Certificate from the YMCA is held in very high regard... a necessary requirement to attain a life-guarding position ...and it is available to all.
Great staff but like anything else in New York City this place is over-populated with clients. At High Times you can't get the use of machines or space to stretch and there is a heavy sweat body odor in the air after all it is a gym but with two pools and a huge facility it is great for the local community because it offers a lot for families and everybody seems to get along.
Been a member at this YMCA for about 2 years now and I love the atmosphere here. It's not a traditional gym like a planet fitness with weights everywhere but it has what you need to get a great workout. All the classes are free with membership, they have 2 pools and a full size basketball court. There is a weight room but it's not very large but there is plenty of treadmill and cardio equipment.
The absolute best customer service- ever!
I arrived around 10 am, to inquire about swimming services.
I was greeted by two courteous and amazing young men and assisted by an equally courteous, knowledgeable and patient young lady. I misplaced the piece of paper with the spelling of her name, but I know it begins with the letter " D".
She went above and beyond to service me and answered all of my questions and even helped me with a question about my membership.
All three YMCA representatives are leaders and prime examples of employees and should be given due notice.
Thank you!
Great location, excellent variety of activities, but staff could be more polite. Some of the people who work there act bossy like they are your supervisors. I purchased services from Y, they receive salary and have to act professionally and be nice to clients.
I have been members of YMCA Park Slope for a long time. I used to love going to the YMCA and use their facility to swim, yoga, and everything else. My kids grew up there practically. They have two pools. However, with my most recent visit, I noticed the gym has gotten so much more crowded. The line for the woman shower was LONG. There were at least 10 people waiting for shower. The towels were always outside of the bathroom. So, some people grab yours by mistake, you are out of luck!
Worse of all the water of the pool was not as clean as I remember. After the most recent use, I had sore throat for a whole week. After my recovery, we canceled our membership. I am glad, it's so popular and gotten much more traffic. However, I need my personal space when I work out. Sorry.
Very friendly location. Classes are always good and challenging rather than intimidating. The only outstanding issue that remains a conundrum is the steam room in the men's locker is constantly out of service. How this fell out of the scope as 2 new swimming pools were installed is similar to attempting to understand the calculus.
Staff is nice, equipment is great, a great variety of classes plus a summer offer well worth its money. I love the fact that there are the two swimming pools and classes in the water.
For the most part, the trainers are professional, I would like to give a special thumps up for Michael at zumba, it was the best experience going to his zumba classes!
Coming there for years. By habit. But cleanliness , especially in locker room, two stars. Sauna and steam room don't work properly half of the time. Cleaning staff just shrugs about cockroaches complains. Lockers are blocked by cleaning crew belongings. Drains in shower area stink. Expensive.
Clean, neat, friendly and helpful staff. Great customer experience!
Considering this is in New York, the price is reasonable for a membership. It is a convenient place with a good variety of equipment, treadmills, and workout rooms on multiple levels. Plus they have a good locker room with towels in the basement
Nice no-frills gym. Also, if you’re lucky, you might catch Bill de Blasio huffing and puffing away on an exercise bike, lol.
I've belonged to this gym twice during the past 8 years and have seen it change, for the better. It's not the fanciest of gyms, and maybe because I've seen it upgraded, I appreciate it more, but for around $50 month for admission to this gym, it's the best value around. Join with a family member and it's $92/month for both of you.
Since this is the only full-service (read pool) gym in the area, yes, it's always packed and yes, the cardio room sometimes gets sweaty.
Before joining, just know that:
- if you want to take a popular class, grab a ticket 30 minutes prior to the start time (and go do some cardio upstairs while you wait)
- make sure you know the pool schedule in advance, lots of classes = not a lot of time for free swim
- locker rentals come after a few years on a wait list
Note: my lapse in membership was to go to the NYSC near work in the city, which I left and returned to the Y closer to home.
I've been a member of this Y for just about over a year. I go for the Beginners' Yoga and the People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE) classes. Although I am 41 years old, I have never been made to feel ashamed or embarrassed for being the only non-senior citizen person in the class. As an overweight and gym phobic woman, I got nothing but a welcoming vibe in the PACE classes. I also never felt out of place using the stationary bikes. My only problem was trying to set up an appointment with a personal trainer who fit my schedule. Not a huge deal. My schedule is complicated. I took the swimming class for adults. I didn't finish it, but that is due more to my own lack of comfort of being in the water.
It may not be the fanciest option, but it's a clean, affordable neighborhood facility that offers a wide variety of classes (zumba, step, strength training etc.) that caters to all fitness levels. A pool is a bonus - but if you're out of practice, come with confidence...there is a regular crowd there that isn't necessarily welcoming.
Great place, but the men’s locker room can sometimes smell like something died in there. Also, it would be great if the small pool had more free-swim sessions.
As pricey as a high end gym but then again there equipment are up to date. Sauna and steam room needs to be bigger and can use a renovation.
Sauna is never working, small pool is out of commission, and weight room is usually crowded. Much cleaner and less crowded than cheaper gyms though.
My school had field day here they provide a lot of fun activities and our sponsor Goldman Sachs get along.
And if there is not enough room they would bring the kids from the lower school to a big football field just two blocks away
Clean location, Professional, Members are like family. YMCA's Efficiency is Awesome. I've had my membership problems resolved, I've been encouraged during my surgery - I even left the Y, and came back. That says alot!! There's no other gym for me😀
Staff/Instructors are Great - Especially Beau - Drena - Catherine - Tiffany - Juanita - France Luz - Michael - Daniel - Petra - Lilka - Louis
I can't name them all. Whatever you need, they WILL help you. Especially physically LoL
Excellent facility, many classes for different types of ages n families. Best price going for gym n pool. Been a member for over 30 years.
Clean and well maintained location. They've added a lot more classes which is nice
The YMCA residential is the very much needed as a source for transitional development for the homeless & students that are out there struggling within common society I feel that the Y helps many within communities to regain survival control & responsibility even brings all kinds of resources Grant's protective programs that brings money within helping the community with on demand job/educational training . That what my community needs of Brownsville & Crown Heights & Bedsty & Flatbush & North Flatbush. More developments like this would benefit so many that are struggling single homeless or students that needs transitional housing assistance. Something to consider within conference the joining Y's of Brooklyn NYC.
I loved it. I visited by using my "one day pass" and I want to get the membership. Very good installations and they offer different kinds of activities for everybody
The gym is very clean, family friendly and a great atmosphere. 2 swimming areas saunas and steam rooms when you are done with your work out.
A community gem. Has 2 pools, daily fitness classes, daily open gym for little kids (<3), classes for older kids. Free childcare available. Also camp, ESL Classes, citizenship exam classes. LOVE THEM.
Free weight area is a bit small but serves its purpose. Staff is friendly, nice pool and clean towels. Great spot overall!
The facility is VERY clean, not crowded and has a very helpful staff. I travel an hour to get there but it's worth it!
Excellent gym. Pool, treadmill, steps and many other machines. Classes too.
I really enjoy going to the pool. I've been to a few classes and they were great. They have a weight room, cardio room, a track area, a baseball court, and a room with weight machines.
This is a solid gym, with good enough facilities. It's clean enough. It's safe enough. But I don't actually like it very much. It's... Fine.
Am always able to get into a lane in lap swim. clean, sauna and steam room are acceptable. Very family oriented
They always lack of towels, and in the big pool water is cold, which apparently they are fine with even when kids (2-3years) have class there
Relatively good exercise equipments, friendly staff, and the best YMCA pool in BK in terms of always having some open lanes for lap swimming
This Y has what you need in the Park Slope area. If you don't want to go far and live in the posh hood then this is your best bet. It's great for kids and family workouts. I would go back only if I had to but this is a decent Y.
Great good and nice. The weights room is in a secret, someone stank location and needs better cleaning but everything else 🙌🏻 …
Very good facility. I expect the staff to be nicer. They seems impatient. I visited the swimming pool which is unisex and overcrowded.
The new pool is great. Sarah's dance and body conditioning classes are great. Otherwise, it's just a normal place.
They were super helpful and accommodating.Enjoyed interacting with Peta and her colleague.Very friendly and patient. These 5-🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 are for them.We left smiling from 👂 to 👂.Excellent customer service. …
Overall vibe is warm and inviting. Impressive selection of classes and equipment. Great hours. Everything you need to get a well rounded work.
Very crowded and not too many machines to work out but the Olympic size pool is a great addition but a little pricey for the membership
The gym is very well-maintained and I love that it caters to everyone -- young, old, families, etc.
Great place to bring your children to enjoy games, innovative storytime, arts and crafts. There are also adult activity to enjoy.
Clean, friendly and pretty newly renovated. Gents changing rooms don't smell terribly pretty however.
YMCA best pool in the area!more amenities than other YMCA male staffers nice and courteous female membership office could be nicer and more helpful to members.
Great place. Big pool, nice staff, and the kid's ballet classes with Ms. Sarah are THE best!
Most of the staff are great but there are a few individuals, including supervisors, that are awful and have no business being there with complete lack of empathy for families with kids, which is crazy since most of the people there are families.
Nice enough; nothing too fancy and at peak times it's crowded. It's clean, and the bathroom is recently renovated.
They have everything in this gym. I have even meet mayor DeBlasio there once.
It is a weird laid out building, buy still ok.
There is a bit of everything here: a mini track, lots of cardio equipment, classes, studios you can use when classes are not going on, TRX, TWO swimming pools, free weights and machines, and family friendly activities!
The place is well maintained, has every fitness for all age groups.
My has it improved through the years - now with an additional pool. Classes are a bit boring but they still get the job done.
My mother lives there. Also it's the Y that our own Mayor uses, how much more of an endorsement do you need.
Nice clean place and got a lot to offer (pool, classes, gym, cardio, weights )
I find the workers very helpful’ I wish the administration would have the steam room fixed quicker.
Has amazing things inside, everything is maintained clean also has a lot of different activities which is great.👍 …
Love the cardio love the pool not ideal for weight training unless your experienced
Warm place. People are helpful. I haven't utilized the facility as yet: but it looks promising.
Great pools and gym. My wife loves the prenatal yoga classes
Ok. Needs some locker room clean up. Too many kids on weekends. Needs more types of classes.
Pretty good... They Recently received new machines which is great and people are friendly.
Amazing gym, great staff and two fantastic pools
Love the pool, usually not packed on thursday. Will recommend
Clean place. Had two pools. Used the 25 yard pool that has 5 lanes.
Just an overall great neighborhood gym with great classes, facilities, and employees.
It’s a great place to workout
Staff is somewhat friendly
Love this place. The personal trainer Stanley Mills is one of the YMCA's greatest assets!
The pool is janky but their machines are always working and the locker rooms are clean.
Nice Y. Pool is pretty good. Sometimes they go a bit heavy on chlorine.
Great location, excellent variety of activities and very efficient people to work with
Helpful staff, has a variety of exercise equipment and class options. Clean.
Overall good gym but i wouldn't recommend for hardcore lifters
Worth every penny. Classes, pools, steam room. I go there a lot.
Small weight room, 2 pools, one of the better YMCA locations...
Great atmosphere love the exercise classes. Instructors are great.
Great environment. Good quality equipment and facilities
