Reviews of Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space
Beautiful venue. Enjoyed Ballet Nepantla performance. It was at times breathtaking and at other times heart wrenching, then empowering. Highly recommend!
In 2022, I hosted my fourth event in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre at Symphony Space. It is a warm, intimate theatre space, with about 162 seats. The control room is not cramped, like many others I've experienced. The equipment seems to be top- tier and up-to-date. There are three, nice and comfortably sized dressing rooms backstage. There are also restrooms and a shower room.
The current staff is the best, thus far. Everyone with whom I interacted was helpful and knowledgeable. All of my questions were answered promptly and thoroughly, including about the tech. The reservations staff was so patient and invaluable. With the paperwork, rules and requirements, it can get a little confusing or hard to keep up, but Rachel, Monica and Elisabeth kept me and everything on track.
The day of my event, John was the theatre rep who ensured that we had everything we had requested and helped us to resolve the unexpected issues that arose. (No fault of the theatre.) John was so personable and professional. He truly made this year my best experience ever at Symphony Space! John went above and beyond for me and my crew, making sure that my attendees had a wonderful and memorable time...wearing a smile all the while.
Feedback from my attendees has been very encouraging. I am so grateful to the Symphony Space staff!!!
A great theater to attend for any type of performance.
The Daniel's Music Foundation, "Danny Awards," was a spectacular experience.
Ralph Macchio or the guy who plays the “dad” on Cobra Kai, also known as the original Karate Kid gets interviewed in front of a live audience.
I perform here twice a year. I love the staff and the theatre is massive! Beautiful! Things that can be improved: the curtain on the main stage. Why doesn’t it work and why hasn’t it been repaired? Stage hands have to physically open and close it during production. The speaker in the dressing rooms: there isn’t one to hear what’s going on on stage in real time but that could be because the theatre is old. Could install this though if owners were willing to.
Very nice and cozy interiors. The decor was very festive. The workers were very polite and knowledgable of the goings-on.
The theatre is found conveniently near the subway station and not in a busy part of NYC.
The only complaint is thatvseating could be a little more modern and accommodating for big and tall people.
Attended an event with my child. The theater is on the smaller side compared to others. The seats are comfortable and offers enough leg space. The mezzanine seats offer Good viewing from both sides. Food and beverages are not allowed. Bathrooms are clean. Offers a variety of events and shows for all ages.
1,2,3 station very close (less than a block).
Cool spot, do you want a performance with little worries of over crowded place then this is for you. Seats about 200 people with plenty of leg space. They do have vaccination policy and a wear your mask at all time.
We went to see Emeline Michel perform and it was great! We sat in orchestra row K, in the aisle and we could see the stage very well. The seats were comfortable and there was plenty of legroom for most. The sound and lighting was perfect and didn't disappoint... just wish the show was a little longer!
Small place but nice! Bathroom is super small! They was on point with vaccine cards needing to be displayed before going in
Excellent live shows, attended the 42nd Annual John Lennon Tribute which benefits various charities and programs. It’s always well put together, some fine music and interpretations of John Lennon songs.
Quick and easy access. We were there to see Tom Felton and the release of his new book. The venue was cozy so it felt like we were right next to him.
Good theater. I went there for coverage of a movie premier . Good place for media point of view . Press gallery is well equipped with all the facility fir video and audio equipment.
Also good for public point of view . Enough space , seats are comfortable, audio system works good . Convenient location.
This is a cute little theater. We sat in the balcony. While some of the seats have a limited view up there (you get a warning before buying a ticket), ours was perfect. Great sound quality. I especially like this venue for a kid's show, it is large enough to feel like a big show, but small enough to feel intimate. My only real criticisms would be, consider where you put the merch table- it jams up the door. Also, I think the meet and greet space was oversold.
Great location ; clean; large venue; all seats is a good seat; great sound ...
Will return
Really beautiful presentation from the Irish Arts Center
I wish the drink choices were better, but everything was nice. Really enjoyed my first visit.
95th Street and Broadway across from subway station. Decent venue partial to sitting downstairs rather than fringe balcony.
Easy parking. Nice people, nice theater with lots of leg rooms. : )
Went to see Fally Ipupa preform live here. It has an awesome and kind staff. The balcony seats are great, in my opinion, for viewing the stage unobstructed. They have a bar (Bar Thalia) down stairs and a smaller that closes early on the same floor as the stage. The Symphony Space is conveniently located at the 96th Stop of the 1, 2, 3 train.
There are many great performances that are held at Symphony Space. My wife and I recently went to The Best American Short Stories Of 2019 where three actors read three stories that were included in a recent anthology. The theater was packed and I sensed that the majority of the audience were frequent attendees of other events at the theater. Check out their website!
Went to an excellent concert with a nice young orchestra. We loved hearing the explanations from different musicians before each piece.
My friend's homegoing service was done here. The sound was excellent. The staff was helpful. She would have been proud for such a wonderful send off.
Great venue, good acoustics, comfortable and reasonably roomy seating. Men's restroom, at least, is of an appropriate capacity.
The decor is a little dated, perhaps, and some of the seating is a little on the shabby side. But a nice venue overall.
Under 30 tickets for 20 bucks, for the same price of a movie we had a really fun night listening to kyle maclachlan read short stories. Seats were Row F. Small venue, everyone has a good view.
Nice small theater. I was there to some jazz event, very good
I really like this place. It’s small, cozy, nice sits, nice stage. Nothing fancy but it has everything you need to have a great night. It has a subway station literally across the street which is always good.
Cute theatre space. Not too big, so feels small and intimate. The chairs are just moderately comfortable, if we had attended a show that was over 2 hours, it might have been too long for those seats. Otherwise, perfect for an enjoyable and intimate show. Plus, there are plenty of food options within one block of the theatre AND the subway is right across the street - both of which make this a very convenient location for a fun night out.
First time at this venue and my experience was extraordinary!
Sweet Honey In The Rock Was Magnificent! This Is Sweet Honey's 45th Anniversary Concert and Regina Carter Joined Them. Symphony Space Rocked Tonite!
They have some excellent events, and the seats are such that it is easy to see from anywhere.
I am pretty tall (5'10") and my knees did not even graze the seat in front of me. I am a women's size 16/18 and the seat was wide enough that I didn't even think about it until I'd left.
I have been coming here for the Banff and Reel Rock film festivals for 2 years now. And it's always fantastic! The space is large and we'll laid out, with good views from all seats. It's clean and we'll kept with friendly staff.
Drinks and food depend on the events so I can't really comment too much.
I would say that I would be happy to see a performance here any time.
A really nice, comfortable performance space with a cool bar. The staff was friendly and welcoming and the place seemed well-run. We did not care much for the "Selected Shorts" show we saw, but I would happily go back to see something else again at this venue-- nice to have a spot like this in the Upper West Side.
Beautiful atmosphere and clean and doesn't really matter where you sit the stage is very visible
Excellent space and staff! Definitely will come back again!
There are a few theaters in this building. We went to the one downstairs. It is a more compact theater but not tiny. The stage is a decent size - the dance troupe was able to perform no problem. There is a lighting booth and dressing rooms in the wings. There is an exit that leads directly outside.
Nice venue for a concert. Good acoustics. Seats are comfy with a lot of legroom, a rarity for a theater in Manhattan. Garage across the street is run by Icon, with typical NYC usurious rates, we paid fifty bucks for 3 hours. If you can use mass transit to this location, the 1, 2, and 3 trains have a stop for 96th St right outside the theater. Recommended.
I like that this performing arts center is on the small side but it's big enough for what you need and not so overwhelming. The space is clean, inviting and even has a little lounge area if you need a drink and bite to eat. I love that the bathrooms are clean and spacious and there is a Starbucks next door.
Great space for intimate performances.
Cool performance space but the procenium arches flanking the stage seemed to block more than expected. Hopefully the folks take that into account when staging their shows there.
The seats in the balcony were angled for optimal viewing. And acoustics were good (although I couldn't tell you if it was amplified).
Great venue. Unless you're in a seat with an obstructed view.
Great, friendly staff. Wonderful, modern space for lectures and small concerts.
Wonderful seated venue.
My Sunday community go to place! 9:30 am, the Quest. Bring your breakfast or something to share "How was your week?" discussion. 11 am service begins. Inspiring music provided by Broadway & off Broadway per- formers. Speakers on self realization. No Amen corner here. Life is what you make it. Think positive. Believe in yourself. DON'T start your week with out it! Cordially invited to coffee & conversation at Whole Food or a tea/coffee/hot chocolate bar after service.
Great sound, good lines of sight
Symphony Space is a New York City treasure! My wife and I have been members for 15+ years and have enjoyed Selected Shorts, movies and concerts there. They have really expanded/broadened their offering and you see a lot more younger people in the audience. Definitely worth checking out their programming.
Beautiful Space. With a long history of community-building events. Comfortable seating on main floor and balconies offer very good view of stage in most cases.
Was easy to find very accessible to mas transit. Welcoming feeling from staff and seating was comfortable 😌. …
It was the first time that I ever attended to an or hestra.. I’m speechless with how skillful these young adults from Columbia University Orchestra are.. Woww!!! I really enjoyed this event.. Had a really great time... I must also give props to Jeffrey Milarsky( Conductor of the orchestra) which did a great job!!!
It was my first experience attending a show at this venue and I absolutely loved it! The atmosphere was amazing and during intermission, you can mingle with other attendees as well as purchase wine!
Love it. Small and quaint. Easy to get to
Went to see Patti Smith speak for One Book One New York 2019. The ushers were knowledgeable and courteous. The seats packed VERY tight so I was glad I was the 3rd seat from the aisle.
Clean bathrooms. Clean floors. Good views even though I was sitting in the back (row R) and I was able to see Ms. Smith without craning my neck and the acoustics were good. What more can you want from a performance venue?

Pretty nice place, convenient location for public transportation, Performances take place in the 760-seat Peter Jay Sharp Theatre or the 160-seat Leonard Nimoy Thalia. Programs include music, dance, theater, film, and literary readings. In addition, Symphony Space provides literacy programs and the Curriculum Arts Project, which integrates performing arts into social studies curricula in New York City public schools.
The Education department here is second to none. They offer a program called All Write! to Adult Learners to enhance Literacy leaening. I love the fact that I applied and received acceptance into this program. I look forward to seeing the actors, working with other Educators, gaining exposure to intricate litetary pieces..The building is literally right in front of the train station. You cant miss it.
Great space big but small enough to make it cozy inside! Great staff experience!
A great venue with comfortable seating. A little bit on the smaller side for a theater but it's very interesting that there is a little store in the lobby.
Symphony Space is a block away from the 95th street subway station. The cafe / bar is located below street level, and restrooms are on the same floor. In terms of offerings, Symphony Space offers Selected Shorts readings, concerts, movies and various other performances. The venue is cozy and welcoming, I would visit this performing arts center again.
Great show, CHECKLIST
Good space and comfortable seating. I've come here twice to see Asase Yaa and had a really good time. I wish there was a changing table in the bathroom but other than that I can't complain.
I visited Symphony Space a year ago to see Sweet Honey In The Rock; acoustic was excellent. Yesterday I taxied friends, and this was a pit stop on the tour of NYC.
My Spiritual Center meets here. Wonderful atmosphere. Easily accessible with elevator on ground floor and near an Express stop on the subway.
Hey brah! I go here every year for my annual Warren Miller ski season kick off movie in November! Great place! Little bar/snack area to pre-game a bit before seeing some tubular shredding!! Woo Jackson Hole! Kinda bummer that it gets so cramped in the theater area (where they squeeze all the sponsor tables). Also. Hint: Dont tell anyone. But there is a bathroom near the snack bar in the lower level that doesn’t get so un-awesomely crowded.
Symphony Space is a wonderful multi-use space that hosts everything from film to author talks to musical performances. Watch for their curated film series (Kurasawa, John Hughes, Charlie Chaplin) and other special events. Their Thalia Cafe is also a good place to go for Happy Hour if you're in the neighborhood.
A real gem of a place, great live performances and films in a unique and historic setting. I hope Symphony Space, the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre and the Thalia keep thriving in the midst of encroaching development and big box monoculture and gentrification.
The Mayor's 2019 speech happened here, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of it, and I'll never forget the experience. It was riveting! The hall was an historic experience in it self.
GREAT SHOW. ASASE YAA WAS AMAZING.
It was really nice. The seats were comfortable and the coordinators were very proffesional. Also the bathroom was not as terrible as I thought it would be
Great events! Went here for the kal Penn book signing which was wonderful.
Always great to step foot in such a great and beautiful theater space and an honor to have been the guest speaker for Unity of NY the Sunday before Thanksgiving 💯🎭🙏🏾☯️ …
Idk. It's a theater not really something I would think to rate. But it had a floor a ceiling. Some lights, pretty much everything I could ask for.
Saw a show here with my boys, they loved it. Seats were comfy, lighting and sound excellent, would go to another show here anytime.
Small intimate setting. Great place to hear live acts. We go to see Glenn Alexander and Oria Aspen Alexander every time they are there.
It was my first time in the stage area of Symphony Space. I was impressed that the seating and the climate control were comfortable and the acoustics were quite good.
Lovely small venue and interesting performances. Quite varied offerings. We saw a tribute to Irving Berlin, which was excellent.
Fitting place for the CBS Follies Show that occurs twice a year. Backstage spaces are well equipped and spacious enough for a 100-person production.
I love the events they host here. The theater space isn't glamorous, but it's not bad. But any event they host is great.
Loved the atmosphere and the show was "Sounds(?) of Sinatra.
Had VIP tickets and sat at a table. Excellent show, great food.
Nice nice venue. Unique programming. Good value. I should go here more often since it's near my work.
Great venue for live music. My seat was fifth row, second in from the outside row, but my sightlines were still excellent.
Great venue and had a fantastic time at the Agatha Christie short story reading. Hugh Dancy was unbelievable. As in perfect.
Comfortable! Saw a super show with a Gambian FEMALE kora player, Sona Jobarteh. Gotta her this artist and when in NY see what SymphonySpace has to offer.
Loved the Capitol Steps! The theater hosts a broad variety of cultural events and is working hard to diversify its offerings.
Really nice place, seating charts for balcony were off from what I choose, but overall I had a good time.
They have a lot of positive energy, they were exceptional dancers and I hope to go again very soon.
Great venue! Awesome atmosphere! I was sitting at the last row and still felt so close.
Love the variety of shows this theater offers. Went to see rainbow fish with my 3 yo and was so impressed!
The downstairs theater is intimate without being too cheap, and the bar next door is great for small local shows and open mic nights.
Love this local theater and their inventive productions! I've seen mostly comedy, and it was great, but I'd like to see more!
I love the space! I go as often as I can.
Venue is fine, process of security and entry caused the show to start over 30 minutes late while they tried to get people inside.
Matthew Hussey's Myths of Love was held here. What a wonderful evening. What a beautiful old theatre.
A great space for events. Masks required and vaccine cards checked!
This is a branch of the actual legendary Coney Island food shop. Along with the hot dogs and fries, also has fish and chips, which can be hard to find in this area.
Exception performance, enjoy the intimacy of the room
This is one of the best theaters in NYC to see a movie/performance...anything. It was designed with human beings in mind. zI love it there!
We performed our Stage Play "The CheckList "here. Great experience. Sold out crowd. Loved it.
Oklahoma-Sing Along.
Sooo much fun.
The room has a great sound system and there is not a 'bad seat' in the house.
Saw Lightwire Theater here. They're awesome. This was a good enough venue to see them in as any. Long live electric dinosaurs.
It was an amazing show with a cool but different culture. It was very exotic and it was also a nice learning experience. Visit anytime
I go here every Sunday for Spiritual service with Unity of New York. Always uplifting. Go on first Sundays to see Carlos Anderson preach.
Upper West side venue for eclectic mix of performances. The acoustics for live music are not very good.
Beautiful theater, great sound system, nice place to see a performer or play, nice staff overall
Wonderful theater !! It's very convenient to the #1 train - really nice place.
Nice theater but way too hot. Great location near convenient parking.
A great venue, wonderful stage visibility, good acoustics, comfy seats, easy to get around in.
Wonderful music. Sound was good and bad at various parts of the songs. But wonderful execution (Orchestra Now).
Superb, definitely worth checking out 👍 …
I visit this location on Sundays for church.
Unity NYC is the best place to go and receive powerful words that are invigorating to the soul.
A good space to have musicals recitals and the such, but the concession prices are very high.
Very clean and spacious. Nice little bar area. Might come here again.
Very nice venue, easy to get to, clean and friendly. Worth going uptown for.

Great venue. There's also a bar downstairs, and great pizza and bar options nearby

The venue is clean, a decent size, and staff was very professional. Highly recommended!

Small, but intimate theater. Not a bad seat in the place.
So glad you have Capitol Steps performing there! They are hilarious!
Selected Shorts is a pure joy and if you're under thirty there is a huge discount
I like the show that took place but at the end before the show officlly ended people just got up started leaving and acting very rude that really ruined the moment 🙁 …

Had a few beers, met Neil Gaiman, had a comfy seat, who could complain?
THE SEATS WERE CRAMPED AND THE UPPER LEVEL IS NOT VERY COMFORTABLE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WITH SOMEONE ELSE. GREAT SHOW THOUGH!
A wonderful, "right-sized" place to hear music.
Really nice theatre with great cafe /wine bar

Not a high end space but a nice place for certain venues. I wish the AC would kick in a little bit more - it ended up being kind of hot, but not unbearable. They do have a bar so that does make everything so much better!
Okay. But on that occasion you didn't have a bar available and they didn't allow you to enter with an appetizer for a 2-hour show... 4 stars for the show.
Wonderful theater and very well organized, the attendants are very polite and helpful.
The seats are very good and there is access for wheelchair users and the bathrooms are clean.
Congratulations for this Theater.
Excellent theater, comfortable seats and easy to reach also has several function rooms, I love that place
