Reviews of Jack H. Skirball Center For The Performing Arts
The auditorium has seating in ground level, boxes, and a balcony. Excellent atmosphere, lighting, and acoustics!
I enjoyed the Hindustani musical concert of Zakir Hussain (on tabla) and Niladri Kumar (on sitar) here last week.
This modern theater is a great place to see live acts. The view of the stage was great and they have a very good sound system. It is extremely well kept, has a very polite and helpful staff. They do have a bar area that has alcohol which you can not bring in the theater but bottled water is allowed in. They also have gender neutral restrooms which is a great move forward but for some it could be uncomfortable. No one honestly seemed to care at the show I attended.
The Skirball Center at NYU holds a beautiful auditorium (with a bar if you're so inclined). The seats are comfortable, the views of offer stage are great from pretty much anywhere, and the sound quality is great. My experience here is mostly with the annual World Science Festival, which I highly recommend you attend!
We went here for a NYU presentation that was more than worthwhile. If you're going to compare universities, be sure to check out NYU first, then see how the others add up. We still haven't decided, but NYU is certainly a top contender.
I've been here a few times to see talks during the World Science Festival, and also once to see Brian Cox. It's a great venue, not too big, not too small. The staff (not sure if they're students or not) are incredibly friendly and attentive with helping you find your seating area based on your ticket.
Having seen many shows in this venue, I do not think there is a bad seat in the house. They have a diverse menu of programs. Developed to enhance the university and neighborhood community. The new seats are great.
This is a wonderful venue for all sorts of entertainment and educational events.
We watched a dance performance by a group from Europe and the members were mostly Belgian and mature looking but very agile. The cello musician was French. I didn't read anything about the show nor the material. I just saw it because I love anything by Bach. And I wasn't disappointed. It was fantastic, to say the least.
I didn't realize the stage was really that big and wide, since the last time I was here was years ago to watch a play on an entrapped miner, which was not a disappointment too.
I am sure I will be back if there's another show worth watching according to my tastes and preferences. It has been worth venturing here especially when you have a lot of options to choose from in NYC when you like live performances.
We went to attend a tabletop Shakespeare play, which was fun and unique. The venue seemed nice and intimate and the event was well organised
What's not to love about this place? The space is large, accommodating, and as good as, or better, than some Broadway theaters. Their programming is excellent as I've yet to see a bad performance here. Even the unknown shows, like the one currently running, "Hot Brown Honey," are always absolute gems. From a location standpoint it's near public transportation and across from Washington Square Park, which makes for great strolls before or after the show. There are also tons of nearby places for pre or post-show dining. Inside, the seats are spacious and accessible, and the bathrooms are spotless. Their lighting and stage effects rival anything on the Great White Way and they can do any production justice. Best of all, the staff are always helpful and friendly, from the ticket booth people to the ushers. Like I said, what's not to love?
Very nice yet very simple theater behind Washington Square Park, where I saw Ailey II this year, just after my 30th birthday. Amazingly, I was able to drive and find free street parking spots that were available. As I was walking, two ladies were around, trying to find supporters for their blood drive - true college/community atmosphere but it was still quiet and calm outside on this Saturday afternoon. Inside, the place was packed without feeling overcrowded. I appreciated that I had elbow room in my seat.
A great venue for many fantastic performances. Buy your tickets early as the good shows always sell out. Pro tip: there aren't any bad seats in the house but the best ones are the center seats in the 4-6th row.
Awesome venue for any show. The place is a nice size with a grand staircase to go towards the "theater". The bathrooms are clean and spacious too. I approve and look forward to coming to more shows at this center!
Truly a wonderful resource for the Washington Square community! This center within the NYU Kimmel Student Union complex is ideal for a variety of events: film, theater, lecture hall, exhibits and so forth. We have attended more than a dozen events here and have nothing but praise for the venue and it's staff. Past year's artistic direction is just complete first-class. We urge more of the same for joy and delight all around...
Great acoustics, nice atmosphere, polite ushers, beautiful place. Went to hear the Songs of the Soul Concert dedicated to the music of Sri Chinmoy, a Bengali born composer of amazing spiritual music. Really enjoyed in the sounds of various instruments and beautiful voices. Only one thing which is good to know, the hall is under ground - meaning, no cell phone signal while you are down there. If you are meeting someone and they are running late, you will need to go up all the way to the entrance to speak with or text to them.
I saw the Bloodlines by the Stephen Petronio Company and it was breathtaking. The choreography, the music, the costumes and the performance was outstanding. The staff was helpful and kind. We had the best seats available. It’s conveniently placed next to a train station.
Awesome venue. I saw Daniel Tosh live at this venue. Regardless of where you are sitting in the venue you are almost guaranteed to get a great view of what is happening in stage. It’s a great location as well very easy to access and get to via the train.
A fine theater, well-designed, excellent acoustics, yet the soundman failed terribly with lackluster audio for such a decent compliment of audio monitors/speakers. For lectures/speaking/talks etc., it's superb, yet considering today's standard, multimedia, audio needs - perhaps the current audio system requires some fixes and upgrades to add a touch of fidelity, effects and bass for events which use a lot of either music and/or audio elements.
I'd give it 5 stars, but the audio simply sucked for the 1st part of the event last Monday. I told the sound/audio guys to add fidelity and bass. They listened, happily obliged and the second-half went well (much better,) yet still lacked the heart, punch and fullness it needed... Perhaps it may have been the audio guys....? IDK but they better get on with exceptional AUDIO....!
Lastly, I really loved the interior; it's simply beautiful with an elegant, minimalist, American design and feel...
Great Hall...and event was also good..nice arrangements..
The theater is nice (the show wasn't great). There is plenty of bathrooms (gender neutral) and they are located near the entrance to the theater which is helpful. There is no WiFi anywhere in the center.
Great performance venue with an awesome, well-curated alternative program that spans all genders, ethnicities, nations, and many experimental art forms. It's refreshing to have this kind of avant cultural option in NYC.
Haven't been lucky with the shows... Absolutely hated the last three I saw here. I am tho very excited with 2020 program and already bought tickets for two performances, we'll see!...
The space was open. Lots of windows so lots of natural light. The interior was do nicely designed too. The acoustics in the hall were great.
Beautiful and cozy space to watch shows, great location
A nice little theater building that hosts talks, theater, dance performances and more. The deals for NYU students are amazing and the program does contain true gems.
Pretty steep view from the balcony but nice theatre
I haven't had the pleasure of watching a show here yet, but I hear that they are good. However, as a student of NYU, I have been to the top floors of Skirball, which offers an amazing view of 5th Ave., Washington Square Park, and the Empire State Building.
The theater is actualy really spacious. However, be careful about sitting in the back during lecture. YOU WILL FALL ASLEEP. No doubt about it. Get there early and sit near the front. I'm serious.
I really like this venue. Its not too big. Its one of those, every seat is a good seat kind of place.
This auditorium is better than some Broadway theatres out there. The staff is great and their invited speakers are always fascinating.
This is a truly professional theatre with excellent sight lines for the audience. I took away one star because their wine choices at the concession bar was awful.
A large, modern space with stadium seating, a raised stage, and screen, the Center has good sound and line of sight for events.
Ailey Ii dancing was a revelation. We had seats way up front, which was great for seeing, but tough for exiting.
Google maps asked me to rate this but I only go there for my biology lectures it's fine I guess good acoustics
Loved the venue and the performance, Bill T.Jones Trilogy. Never experienced anything like it. Hope to get to this theater again.
Very nice theater at NYU. We went there in June of 2019 to see a National Dance Institute performance.
Beautiful place but too small to congregate after show. 200 or less. Major construction on street causing traffic headaches
Had a great day visiting this site.
I had a beautiful experience at the Center during the conference. Gorgeous plush red palace that was welcoming and clean. Thank you.
Nice, spacious theater next to Washington Square Park. Check the calendar for exciting live events!
Skirball Center is modern center where you can participate in scientific life
Great theatre with a wonderful atmosphere. Enter on the east side of the building next to the box office.
I remember when this building first opened. You can see wear and tear. But great events are happening there!
Large venue for the arts..I actually saw an NY Tech conference here. Good alternative shows listed
Great presentation on AI & robotics as part of World Science Festival. Bathroom assignment / labeling ... very interesting.
Great theatre!
Ok acoustics. A bit small for tractional concerts, a bit too large for more experimental performing arts.
Great place for new and experimental music, theatre, entertainment. Venue a little cold aesthetically.
Went here for a performance of Pilobus and the NYC tech meetup. Good venue with a lot of seats.
Lots of local and college performances along with world renowned opera, musical, play, concert, and benefit productions.
I attended an all city orchestra concert there , the place is amazing.
Had my daughter's graduation here wonderful place great seating
Great auditorium! Easy to access, easy to check in. Wonderful!
I graduated from High School in this building. It's very nice inside. It's small yet open, I loved it.
Good for lectures or conferences, although a lecture with 600 students is not optimal
Very nice compact concert hall with great acoustic
Amazing World Science Festival event!
Seats are not very comfortable, and rows are very tightly packed together
Decent theater. Went for my son’s high school graduation
Really nice theater with great views from every seat
I really like the presence of the stairs in this building. It gives a sense of a lot of open space here.
Very Organized and a nice place to go visit to see a discussion or anything they are giving.
Saw an NT Live here. Great theater and friendly staffs.
Amazing theatre space. The lighting and sound is very very good.
Great venue to watch performances. Highly recommended.
I'm in love with the aesthetic of the place. Bonus for gender neutral bathrooms.

For the first time I went to see a show at NYU skirball, I thought it was fantastic, the kindness at the box office, the theater in general magnificent, I was amazed to see a translator in sign language in the right corner, a thousand and a thousand applause for such a GENTLEMAN I wanted to greet him at the end of the play (MEXICO CITY GAY CHOIR) but they didn't let me in, I'm sorry they hadn't taken him to the center of the stage to receive the well-deserved applause, which I mentioned to one of the ushers, I felt very comfortable with the chair I could get .Sec O boxes....Row OB...seat 9 .
I congratulate the organizers for having someone like the KNIGHT of sign language, since although it was not this day, my partner is deaf... Here's a greeting of APPLAUSE for him....
Small but complete. The theater crew is also very professional
