Reviews of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Co
Aminah Imani
Came here to see Alex Edleman’s one man’s show and I was really impressed. The venue is well kept and there are all gendered restrooms so you can tell they are woke. It was just welches and popcorn at the concession stand but you can’f have it all. If you are reading this view and Just for Us is still playing, do yourself a favor and get a ticket, you won’t be disappointed. Otherwise if you’re going to this theatre for any other reason, its okay, someone has to be second best. Seating in the theatre seems conducive and entry and exit was seamless.
Ellis Jackson
Phenomenal architectural wonder! Must experience the space and check out some theatre when you can 🔥🎭❤️ …
Lee Parker
Went to see "ain't no mo". Great show in a small venue. No bad seats in the house. The bathrooms are gender neutral with privacy stalls. Will definitely return for a future performance.
Philippa Pham Hughes
Simply one of the best theaters in town. I’ve seen so many thought-provoking and brilliant productions here over the years. Every time I go, I always kick myself for not going more often.
Scott Ableman
Outstanding nonprofit theater putting on ambitious works in a very comfortable and extremely intimate modern space. Not a bad seat in the house. Subscribe and support this terrific theater even if you can't make every show!
Scott “DC Cheetah” Suchyta
Wolly Mammoth is one of my favorite theaters in a city/neighborhood rich with theater options. The shows are almost always very modern and progressive and in my opinion connect well with DC locals.
Jessica McNutt
We saw Ain't No Mo and LOVED it. We have become huge fans and season ticket holders for Wooly Mammoth. If you're reading this, go see something there immediately. You won't be disappointed.
Dwayne B
Woolly is one of the best theaters in the area. They choose plays that are culturally relevant and challenge the audience. They have recently added the Spit Dat DC open mic to their monthly schedule, which gives Spit Dat a wider audience and gives Woolly a chance to interact with DC's spoken word scene in ways they never could.
*note: I am a host of Spit Dat DC (first mondays at 8pm

I enjoyed this non traditional theater house where I went to see A Strange Loop! Our balcony seats were perfect, we could see EVERYTHING so well and the show was genius. The space is all inclusive, gender neutral restrooms and appropriate pronouns for everyone. You won't be disappointed!
Franklyn Benjamin
Amazing performances everytime I attend. Go see BLKs!! I've now gone 2 weeks in a row and have really enjoyed their community events surrounding the work of this show. I'll be getting a group together to go and see their upcoming show. Also, I Really enjoyed the concession stand and appreciate all the Wooly Mammoth staff, directors, features, performers and all of those involved for their continued outstanding work!!
Lisa Henig
Alex Edelman show was terrific. Take metro. Parking is awful.
Ronald Steele
Small, but, pricey theater; maybe 100 seats, means you can't get a bad seat. Everyone in view of the stage.
William Mallick
This is an excellent venue for live performance. Like many small theatres, the seating is a U around a central stage, meaning there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Caught a performance of "Gloria" here (an excellent performance of an excellent play) and my experience was perfect. Seats were comfortable, just enough room to not feel crowded, service was excellent and the loos were clean and in good working order. The architecture and interior design of the space are particularly noteworthy. A good place to see a play, and under the current artistic director one can be rest assured the plays will be excellent. The lobby had an excellent exhibit about work life culture, which was a strong tie-in to the story of "Gloria".
Marilyn Stark
Love this theater for their productions, often edgy and provocative, willing to take risks. Not a bad seat in the house.
Austin Graff
I haven't been to a show here, but I did attend a company meeting in the auditorium. As a venue, it's GREAT! It's in downtown DC close to the National Mall and the space itself is modern. They have enough restrooms, a cafe, and the auditorium seats several hundred. Despite the size, the auditorium feels more intimate with a small stage in the front.
M Dodd
Always a great place to see original theatre. Shows themselves can be hit or miss as with any form of entertainment. But the theatre itself is great, acoustic-wise, lighting-wise, etc. Thrust stage, box seating in the balcony, and great lobby area. Great staff, reasonable $$. For a small theatre they are in my top 10.
Recently went there for a NYE show and event. Had a great time.
katina witherspoon
Great location in DC, very intimate theater. Loved the seating (tho a bit cramped upstairs) and no bad seats in the entire place. The acoustics qere great, good sound system. Bathrooms in a great location, wheelchair accessible. there are parking garages near, and the venue offers validation. Street parking is free on the weekend (but be sure to read those very confusing DC parking signs). There is a snack/concession stand, and the lobby is pretty comfy. Would definitely visit again.
Kimberly Hurley
This theater is awesome! Woolly Mammoth productions are always top notch, provocative and leave you wanting more. They offer pay what you can events that make theater affordable to all. The venue itself is intimate and comfortable. Every seat is a great seat.
Mark Young
Loved every show we've seen here.
Kirk Martin
Fantastic, quirky, theater. We watched the play Familiar, which was an exceptionally well-acted performance. Small, maybe 200 seats where every seat is great. The theater has a great deal for tickets called the six pack where you get six tickets at an amazing price. Absolutely loved it!!! Try some of their wooly mammoth coffee house blend, delicious.
Michael Muñoz
Have been to many shows here, some better than others. Regardless this is a world class theater with great performances. I always love how each play changes the stage and audience seating, you get some really neat experiences.
Stephanie C
I love everything about Woolly. It is a socially aware theater. Simple theater seating but absolutely glorious and intricate theater productions. Staff is so friendly and accommodating and they allow drinks in the theater and sell small snacks and the snack bar. Also tickets are very reasonably priced. If you have a chance to go to Woolly mammoth theater company please do!
Scott Outten
Nice, smallish theatre with some interesting shows. Bathrooms are well taken care of, and there is a bar for those of us who drink. I like the independent theatre vibe that this place has, and I've seen some pretty good shows here. I will gladly visit again.
Elizabeth McLaughlin
Been a subscriber for years! Always great performances personal and edgy at times. If you want to explore current social issues or consider points of view different from your own, you will not be disappointed. If you prefer fluff and stuff, like Annie, this might not be for you, but give it a try. Always interactive exhibits in the house which tie to the play, again to get you thinking. Also there are after play discussions on some performances with the creative staff. Do go!!
Lettie Lazaga
The atmosphere was lovely. I especially loved the layout of the theater, which was intimate and cozy. The performance put on by the Second City crew was phenomenal. I had a lovely time there. I would recommend this place to all.
Edward Greenaway
A small (275 seat?) theater. Don't let that fool you. The space is vary flexible. The trapped stage, counter weight fly system , and flexible seating and removable railings allow for infinite possibilities.
The friendly and knowledgeable staff combined with the unique and flexible space make it the perfect place to put on a show or take in a show.
In short I love it.
David Liang
Stumbled across this place Tuesday night around 7:30pm after dining at Rasika right before. After talking to the front desk, we decided to get two balcony tickets for American Utopias by Mike Daisey.
The seats themselves were okay (both in terms of view and comfort), and the acoustics and lighting were good. Although I was one of the few people who didn't laugh during the show, it was still a good performance.
Unfortunately, they no longer offer Pay What You Can Performances, but they still have good discounts like 30yo or under patrons and stampede seats.
Jena Carvana
I had a chance to see damned-if-you-do while visiting DC and absolutely loved it. I got the tickets on a whim just for something to do it turned out to be a really interesting improv show where are the performers act out an audience member's future after asking the person a few questions about their past and present. The audience member they selected had a particularly interesting life and personality which made for a hilarious show.
Brian Magurn
Woolly is the best. This innovative theater's mission is theater development. Kind of the D.C. version of off-Broadway. All of the shows here are interesting or have something to say. Some shows need a little more adjustment, but it's always entertaining and usually thought-provoking.
Joe Parrish
Great theatre venue in downtown DC. Each play has an associated art exhibit that ties into the themes and the plays are imaginative and fun. Good prices as well, the 6-pack of tickets is a great deal for a couple to see 3 plays.
Erin R
My absolute favorite theatre in Washington, DC! Comfortable seating. And the BEST shows; each a mix of politics, deep thought, art, and empowerment. Concessions with alcoholic beverages available. Great for a date!
Carolyn H
Hip, cool theatre, great modern space and shows, and their work is always a surprise! Great spot to bring friends or a date, but their shows are a bit risque, so probably not the place to bring Mom... Unless she's a cool mom.
Marissa Msefya
great venue! first time there last week and loved the open space when I walked in. First of all, they got me hooked once I saw they offer $20 tix for people 30 years old and younger!
Picking up my tix was a breeze.
They have a concession stand downstairs with beer, wine , water, snacks, etc. Somewhat pricey compared to other venues but hey!
Also, there is not a bad seat in the house (in my opinion).
great location (not parking wise) but there are def several good eats around like Rasika.
Will def return!
Susan Marinelli
I always appreciate the smallest of this theater. It's a very intimate and up close experience. The edgy productions make use of current and real content, of which there is plenty in D.C. I'll always aim to see Second City productions here.
Stuart Lending
Nice intimate space, great show. The restroom situation is not the best. Doing away with urinals in group restrooms is inefficient and not fair for many of us
ty ogunlesi
Awesome theater went see the play FAMILIAR and it was a great experience. The staff and ushers were great and the theater it's self was beautiful. Lots of parking options close by, so it parking parking a breeze, there are also a ton of restaurants around the theater.
Josh Melear (gravityboat)
This theatre is right off of Constitutional Ave. And has great performances. The stage is a thrust style stage which feels like you are right in the action with such a small theatre. It's in a great area with lots of restaurant options near by.
Tabitha Whissemore
The box office staff was so kind and, thanks to vaccination/mask requirements, I felt safe being in the theater.
Christine Paluch
Easily the best theater company in DC. The home to the ever controversial Mike Daisy.
I have seen numerous performances here, they are always a delight. They are often a mix of tragedy, comedy, and absurdity.
The theater space is rather nice, probably the perfect size in fact.
Kelli Singleton
Very nice venue. There isn't a bad seat in the theatre. No eating in the theatre but you can drink. The vending prices are fairly reasonable for the location.
Wendy Whitfield
This theatre is wonderful! I just saw An Octoroon there. Don't miss it! Also, don't be ashamed or scared to be uncomfortable at times. All plays are not just for entertainment, but to open our eyes sometimes in the most shocking ways. Wooly is known for bringing those type of plays to Washington theatre goers.
Joe Martinez-Williams
It was a really cozy venue. The adult beverages were decently priced and the show (Blks) was phenomenal. It was a perfect outing for our Valentine's Day Date Night.
David Pittman
Woolly Mammoth's productions are always worthwhile. The plays are contemporary, entertaining and thought-provoking. The acting and production values range from good to excellent. The theater is intimate, well-located and comfortable.
Marcia Scarlett
Beautiful, small and intimate theater. Surprisingly there was leg room and the seats were pretty comfortable. Plenty of room in the lounge areas. Decently priced snack bar. Friendly staff.
Wendy W
I love this theatre although I can't say I go frequently or see all the plays there. But, whenever I do go, I am never disappointed. I recently saw "Octoroon" there. This is just the kind of play you expect to see here - a little controversial, thought provoking and yet highly entertaining. Let me digress and give a brief review of the play.
Pay attention to the opening scene and the speech by the character, at this point, portraying the playwright for this play-within-a-play, which is the remake of an 1859 play by an Irish man. In the “Octoroon” he plays multiple characters as do others who play unlikely roles, like the white man who plays the playwright’s assistant then dons black make-up and the most awful wig to play 2 different slaves. No doubt the white man in black-face made many uncomfortable as almost the entire row in front of me did not return after intermission; but a play is not just to entertain; indeed, the purpose of many plays is to educate the audience; make the audience think; and appreciate the plight of others by making characters come alive. So, to me, making white people uncomfortable and Black people angry about the injustice of slavery are not bad things; but necessary if we are to bring about change in our society by opening our eyes and firing us up. I thought this was an excellent play and all the actors and actresses were great! I just might see it again, and I strongly urge you to see before it leaves. Maybe, this time when it leaves the Wooly Mammoth Theatre, it will be headed for Broadway.
Bethany Lilly
The best place for modern theater in DC. I've seen productions I will never forget and things I didn't care for, but am glad I've seen. Highly recommend!
David Koehler-Stanescu
I have seen several of the best plays in my life at Woolly, and even the "worst" were never bad.
Woolly also has amazing under 30 pricing. It allowed my partner and I to have fancy dates even when we were dead broke, and I very much appreciate that.
Kenya Allmond
You NEVER know what to expect when you see a show at Woolly. It could be completely and utterly weird or hard-hitting social commentary. It could be anything. You will be met with a unconventional yet professional theatre experience. If you're new to the theatre, I'd definitely recommend starting here. If you're easily offended, though, you might want to check to see what's included (profanity, nudity, etc.) in the show you want to see.
Lara Bryant
Wonderful playhouse right in penn quarter! We saw a beautifully directed and acted performance of Familiar by Danai Gurira and it was the best live theatre experience I’ve had in a long time.
ThomThom
Saw She the People, which was way less edgy than most fare at this venue. All the seats are close in this small theatre. But sometimes the shows are more avant garde than I prefer.
Adam Gresek
Totally fun place to catch a play. The shows they put on here are really edgy too. Some are funny, some are wierd, some are hard to watch, but all of them make you feel something. They also have cool lobby activities that tie into each show.
Paul Tysoe
Brilliant experience, went to the women's match yesterday and the staff at woolly mammoth were very supportive, friendly and encouraging to the marchers. Also provided access to a SPOTLESS bathroom, charging access for phones and also water/coffee. World needs more places like this.
Charles Jude Prestia
Only fantastic shows. Decent drink selection with fair prices -- $5 craft beers and $3 PBR tall boys at a quality performance venue in DC is about as good as it gets!
Liz Scroggs
The modern-industrial style venue is made warm and welcoming by the great staff. I've been to two shows here, both of which were eye-opening. Keep up the great work!
K “K” GWITIRA
Loved it. I watched a play with one of my favorite people @ Familiar and the play, location and everything came together. Best day to watch a play is Sunday. Free parking in DC
David Lapidus
Excellent theater! Not a bad seat in the house. Saw The Nether here twice and was really impressed. Love that they do PWYC and happy hour nights.
Colton Needles
Really cool space. They have a small cafe inside and some tables. The theater itself is small so even the cheap seats are very good. They do very good work here
Keecha Harris

Putting on provocative plays in intimate settings, the Woolly Mammoth Theatre never ceases to entertain and cause one to think or laugh or cry or all three in the same evening.
Gregory King
This is my warm place, the theatre all over the world that they provide is, well, all I cand say is world class. We do not always agree, but what the orginazation chooses is always top knotch.
H Sadoff
Theater was nice, sat in a Box seat and was difficult to see based on the performance and them always facing center. Easy to locate.
Elizabeth
2nd City's Nothing to Lose but Our Chains and Blackside of the Moon were excellent. Theater promotes edgy performances
Raphael Tisch
This contemporary theater in DC always has a thought provoking line up of shows. Come here to have your mind blown, and preconceptions challenged.
Noble Ackerson (Stigsfoot)
Great event space though can get a bit crammed for higher capacity events due to the layout.
Pretty terrible cell reception.
Good location.
