Reviews of Signature Theatre
Barbara Folk
Just to return to the Signature Theater to see Into the Woods by Sondheim. This is the second time I've seen this particular play at the Signature. It's a wonderful theater, accessible with lots of parking, great prices for memorabilia, and really friendly.
Incredibly talented locals play most of the parts, and you'll definitely become familiar with the performers if you visit often.
Ron West
Just saw The Color Purple and it was a magnificent show. The theatre is nice a cozy with almost every seat is a great seat. The performers were very talented with great singing. The writing and the music, excellent. Nothing but good things to say about this performance, highly recommended..
swati patel
I love the size of this theater. And the shows I’ve seen here have always been excellent. Ease of parking and nearby restaurants make it easy to have dinner before a show. My only issue is the seats are pretty uncomfortable. I went last night and my chair didn’t have arm rests and I felt achy after 3 hours of sitting.
Karin Ahrenholz
A wonderful time was had by all. A nice, intimate place to see a show. The staff was super friendly and attentive.
Marta Cervantesmiguel
Always have a great time at this theater. Just saw “Into the Woods”. It was truly amazing! Acting is outstanding! and their chocolate chips cookies are the best (always get them during intermission)
Bakari Cowart
Every time I've come to the signature theater the production quality is top notch. They have refreshments and snacks along with a very nice theater space. The staff is amazingly helpful and kind and always willing to help you find the right stage and anything else you may need.
We really need to make more of an effort to come here more often.
Hannah Hickman
The Signature Theatre is not only a great and beautiful venue, the performances were unreal. My friend and I saw The Color Purple this past week and we were absolutely blown away. Every one of the performers were truly phenomenal and we are considering going back again this week to see it again!
Monica Chestnut
Fantastic show! The music, lyrics, performers, and theater were great! No hassel parking too.
Highly recommend. Treat yourself! Don't miss it! Catch it before it ends on October 9.
Eric Peterson
It’s live theatre, some shows will be better than others. Signature isn’t afraid to take risks, which means there’s even more variety, but when it works, it’s better than most Broadway shows I’ve seen. I’m a second-year subscriber, and I don’t know why I wouldn’t come back next year.
Diane Edwards
I went to see the Color Purple musical. IT WAS GREAT!! The voices were electrifying and the music accompanied it was great. I was a little disappointed that the ending did not include the song God it trying to tell you something sung by Sug going back to the church. I think that was really a sad oversight. Overall it was great
Rick
What a performance of Into the Woods! First time at the Theater visiting from Minneapolis. Staying in DC. Took Public Transportation over. Easy! Adding Signature Theater to my list for my next visit to the area. Loved it!
Bruce Johnston
Into the Woods is a gorgeous, very touching production ( yes, I shed a few tears of love). Thank you for another magnificent performance. You truly make this world a better place.
Noel Newell Smith Katz
The performance of Into The Woods was superb. I just love the Signature Theater ♥️
Nancy Thweatt
Great intimate black box theatre. Saw "Into The Woods" and loved it. Looking forward to seeing more productions in the future.
Marisa Sterling-Abram
Saw RENT here and it was amazing! Not a bad seat in the entire theater but I particularly loved orchestra row D seat 114 next to the stage corridor. Bathrooms were kept clean and moved fast and love their vaccine required and mask policy! Would definitely come to another show here.
Da-Wang Wu
We came here to see the musical Rent. Although we bought the discounted tickets with obstructed view, the overall view was actually fine with only a bit difficulty to see actors’ facial expression from their back if they stood closer to the wall. Overall, we had a good experience watching the show here.
Melissa Isbell
The musical was amazing but the seats were very small. I'm tall and I tried to purchase where I'd have some leg room. Well, it was hard to sit with fencing against my knees. There should be some notice about that. The ushers were nice and switched seats with me and my date after intermission.
Alan Barta
Just saw “Both Sides Now”, a cabaret performance of the songs of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. It was amazing. Great music. Great stories.
Barbara Anderson
The Color Purple was amazing!!! I would go again tomorrow if the show hadn't closed. Congrats to cast and crew on an outstanding performance!
Ed Hodge
Very intimate & small. I sat in row B & could hear every word. "No place to go" was very worthwile. The actors stayed after for a discussion...very cool...
Beatrice Frank
finally got to see ‘No Place To Go’ - Bobby Smith and Ethan Lipton should get a TONY. One of Signature Theaters best offerings. Ian Riggs, Grant Langford and Tom Lagana were equally impressive. Matthew Gardiner’s directing was spot on.
Tiree B
Went to see The Color Purple. I wasn’t expecting a small area of a stage but the show itself was phenomenal. It was rather chilly inside but was very nice atmosphere.
Venus Coates
The facility is so small that there is really no such thing as a bad seat. There a waiting area upstairs with a little bar where you can purchase drinks.
You should know, this facility has "name your ginder" bathrooms, so if you're looking for a place with a women only bathroom, this ant it.!
Silly Bear
This is a wonderful theater with a very intimate black box space. I've seen a number of shows here and they are always well produced.
Angel Barraza
Always. A great experience at the Signature. We saw The Color Purple last night, the performance was amazing!
Steve Thomas
Amazing venue. Never have seen a show there. The show was amazing, In The Woods. Very professional production.
Amanda Cassa
This place is so cozy and intimate. The productions are nicely done and feel like a private showing almost. They have good snacks and drinks and the staff is very friendly. There really isn't a bad seat in the house and compared to Kennedy center the price is pretty reasonable. Only reason this is getting 4 instead of five stars is the upper seats and so close to the rail that your legs feel very crammed I'm 5-5 with shorter legs so I cannot imagine what my 6" friends feel AND this place is always freezing so make sure to bring a jacket or cardigan.
Big John
Enjoyed the musical stage performance of Rent. We sat in the balcony which was a perfect for seeing everything. The performance was excellent. The staff was very courteous and helpful. we love the Signature Theater.
Greg Moore
What a great show. Theater was good. Seating was a little tight.
Robert Bruce Johnston
I have been in love. Yes, in love with the Signature Theater for many years. Their productions are always magnificent. I love the big Sondheim productions. I have never been disappointed. The intimate productions in the small theater often touch my heart. See Daphne’s Dive. It is a lovely work. Thank you for what has always been much more than mere entertainment. The Signature Theater is life altering. After seeing Daphne’s Dive, I went into the men’s room. A kind and friendly man was mopping up a mess. I wanted to give him a hug ( you might understand if you have seen Daphne’s Dive that is about love ). It is so lovely that their are greeters and folks who say goodbye or goodnight at the Signature. It is a special place in my life. ( I used the words love and lovely quite a lot, because those words are truly what I feel. )
Aaron
Went to watch the performance of Rent. Venue is very well appointed. Staff was welcoming and organized. Felt very safe with their Covid protocols.
The performers and musicians were outstanding! I was truly impressed with how well the actors and actresses sang. I really liked the intimacy better stage and audience. I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. The entire company not only performers did an outstanding job. 👏 Thank you for a wonderful show!
Paul Joseph
Excellent showing of Titanic. Parking was a bit difficult as the garage has a myriad of reserved spots for different businesses. But the performance and ambiance are great!
Matthew Cowan
This is a my favorite place in the DMV to enjoy live theater. The productions and actors are always to the highest caliber. The theater space itself offers a comfortable front of house and seats with great views. I've been a satisfied subscriber for two years now and will definitely be renewing my subscription for next year. Run, don't walk to get your tickets now...you won't be disappointed!
George Reid
Great atmospheric, with excellent shows. Small theaters (2) . There are no bad seats, intimate.
Jason Greer
We went to see Hotter Than July on July 8 and it was (as all shows we attend here) amazing! Mark is a genius and Rochelle, Solomon, Eliot, DeAnte, and Trey delivered amazing performances that will keep me going back to Signature cabarets. Rochelle's version of Lately sent chills down my spine and Solomon's personality came through on every song. The crowd's enthusiasm was contagious, generated by the artists who graced us with their talents. This is a no-brainer review...if Mark Meadows is involved it's worth it to attend!
Sarah Harvey
Love this small, intimate theater. The actors were amazing as well
Tanium T
A good small venue. With great performances.
Jeff Luttrell
Stellar performances! We have seen several musicals and plays here and the quality is always legit. The bar service is expansive as well and you have to get a cookie. Do it! Friendly staff as well at the box office :)
Jennifer Thorpe-Lewis
Great seats and acoustics. Very nice venue in an array with lots of options.
Tommy C
It was a great play but I'm confused why there was a Drag Queen greeting the audience as we left.
Paul Harris
Wonderful theater, great production of “into the woods”. Highly recommend
Christina Klenk
Great show.. love this theater.. not a bad seat
B P
Top notch regional theater with two flexible performance spaces and a wide open atrium to enjoy concessions. There isn't a bad seat in the reconfigurable Max theater space due to its intimate size.
Janey Richards
Always a delightful experience. We've been going for over twenty five years.
Jason Rodriguez
A wonderful local theater that we've visited several times. Productions are high quality.
Diane Keller
My first visit there and I was very impressed. Quality talent and great staging. The staff was so pleasant. I am anxious to see other performances.
So-So Hinkle
The play Color Purple was amazing, as well as the speaking engagement with the actors.
Lenny and John Stumpf/Pitchford
It's AWESOME being able to experience live theater again at Signature Theater, and "Rent" was the perfect vehicle to get us back on that road!
Powerful performances by numerous cast members . . . THIS IS ONE NOT TO MISS!
Tiffany Sykes
Great theater with several small intimate venues.
l i
Fantastic show! and McKenzie could not have been more efficient and kind in helping me access my vaccination information virtually. Thank you!
Tall Grass
Wow, it's been nearly a decade since my Son and I spent a week visiting Washington D.C. together. During that trip, I was looking for top quality entertainment that could feed our need to self examine, yet at the same time contribute to being more cultured. Signature had the goods! We enjoyed:

April 10 – June 24, 2012
We felt uneasy (in a good way) then we were outraged and it wasn't long before tears of laughter began to peal away our horror at jut how absurd we humans can be. This event was well supported by its ease of access. We took the subway from our Hotel in D.C. out to Arlington. A cab ride later we were dropped off at the front door to The Signature. Inside, our tickets were waiting for us in a clean and friendly atmosphere. I would recommend this venue for quality fun and entertainment. Lots of good food and shopping with garage parking and a library both next door to the Signature at Randolph Square.
Justin Kleiber
Went to see Daphne's Dive here, and it was great to be back at a play for the first time since the pandemic started. It was an entertaining show, and as a student the discount made it really affordable
Renata Baldwin
The Color Purple cast is amazing. Their chemistry and energy is out of this world.
Jeff Parnes
We enjoyed the experience. The theatre is surrounded by free parking, and there are many restaurants and shops in the Shirlington area right in front of the theater. The halls for each of the performances (there are two) are smaller than most of the performance venues we're used to in the metropolitan Washington area. There's a snack and liquor bar on the same level as the halls, so it's possible to get to the theatre early and eat there or have a drink before the show without even leaving the facility.
And the play we saw, Gun and Powder, was worthwhile as well.
cheryl head
Beautiful performance space. Not really a bad seat in the house. Saw RENT on 12/16/21.Their Covid protocols are well handled, and everyone was super friendly.
Rob L
Very impressive theatre setup. Nice waiting area, with a good mix of options if you don't have time to eat. Cool gift shop also with mix of merch. The theatre itself was really well setup for an excellent view all over for the production of Blackbeard that I saw this weekend. Great sound, nice effects, very entertaining! I have recommended this to several groups of friends already and will be keeping an eye on upcoming productions.
Carrie Hoover
Lovely venue, great staff and wonderful performances!
Betty Garrett
Great singing and refreshments. Seating could have been better
John Shiffler
Amazing performance of Billy Elliott. The entire cast was on point and the set design, set changes wardrobe and choreography were perfect. Food service and ushers were friendly and helpful. We were visiting DC when we attended and will definitely check out this venue's offerings the next time we are in the area.
Scott Ableman
Signature Theatre, just south of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia near Washington, DC, is among the great regional theaters of the world, and is particularly noteworthy for producing new musicals, reinterpreting classic musicals for an intimate, black box stage, and perhaps above all for producing the works of Stephen Sondheim. We are blessed to have such a remarkable and internationally-acclaimed nonprofit theater producing world class works for such small audiences of only around 225 seats (it varies by production). Don’t be surprised to see internationally known theater performers show up in the cast, or in the audience, at this national treasure of a theater.
Bob Joebob
Good show very uncomfortable seating
Jason Mellen
Surprisingly nice little place with high production value.
Daniel Xiao
My girlfriend and I would like to truly thank Signature Theatre for being so kind and helpful and being so accommodating. The staff here are amazing and put in the hard work to make performing arts great. The location is awesome and the parking is free. The seating is pretty limited and the performance space is unique with all four sides open. Come see a show!
Leslee Friedman
Extremely good regional theater, interesting variety of shows, consistent quality. Offers a number of accessibility tools for the deaf and hard of hearing community, and is wheelchair accessible.
L. Charisse Davis
Nice facility in a great location for restaurants and a convenient walk from a bus stop.
Austin Smith
A DC-area gem, Signature puts on high quality plays including both classics and interesting new works. Its theaters are also cozy, making sure you're never far from the action. Great food, too, and it's in a lovely location right next to multiple restaurants and shops.
Sarah Ichord
saw into the woods and the production was fantastic!
Eric Casey
Great and versatile space is able to accommodate just about any type of production. Both musicals I've seen there were excellent. One of the best theater companies in the DC area.
Karen Saucier
Saw Assassins. What fantastic production. This play does have gun shots but they are not too loud and most don't catch you by surprise. Signature is a relatively small theater so I don't think there's any obscured view and all seats seem to give full view of the stage. Seats are actual chairs not standard theater seats but are comfortable. Lobby of theater offers some food and beverage choices along with a small gift shop.
Maxine Schwartzman
If you love theater, you will love Signature! My daughter was driving. Neither of us knows Virginia. So were a few minutes late. Our seats were in the balcony. At first the usher told us we would need to wait until the scheduled time for late seating. But after a few minutes, she said there were seats in the very first row of the orchestra that would not disturb anyone. She would seat us there. OMG! What a fabulous experience. Sitting in arms reach of the fabulous performers. And they are fabulous! A troupe of young Astairs and Kellys. I could see the taps on their shoes. The songs were lovely, but neither one of us came out humming. There were no songs that stuck in your head like Oklahoma or Tonight. I am looking forward to many more wonderful trs at this superb little theatre.
william dozier
Each and every show they do is OUTSTANDING
Tom Vasale
Signature Theater is a marvelous, contemporary space hosting first rate theater. There's a great bar serving light, pre theater dinners and nice wines and spirits. Free parking is available but a little difficult for a newcomer to find. The garages we're mostly full but I lucked out at the Campbell Street Garage!
Carol Fuller
Great performances. Specializes in Sondheim.
Steve Michaleski
First time to theater and sat in front row for She Loves You. EZ parking. Unsure if I would return.
Hannah Phillips
Very high quality theater experience. Live shows are not cheap....La Cage aux Folles starting ticket price was $82, general seating. Nice location, good place for a date with someone worth spending the money on. Shirlington offers a great variety of eating places, reasonable parking, and easy location just off Hwy 395
Sonya Blair

The Signature Theatre, tucked away in a corner of Shirlington in Virginia, is a piece of Off Broadway that makes theater come alive for all who Venture into the venue.
This Theater Company fearlessly engages in a seasonal mix of theater that is well worth checking out even if you go for just one performance.
Around the theater there are great eating venues like Busboys and Poets, Mexican food, and Irish Pub, and a Harris Teeter which also sells food to go.
The theater has a bar and you are allowed to bring drinks but not food into most performances.
The bar serves a limited menu of sandwiches which which are tasty and well prepared. They also have the best cookies of any theater in the area, if you want a cookie order early because they frequently run out (are you listening, Arena Stage?).
There are lots of parking garages nearby but be careful as the towing areas are not well marked (yes I got towed once) and you should consider arriving early to make sure you get a decent spot.
Shirlington does not have a metro stop so you may want to Uber to the stage from a nearby Metro or drive.
The signature is a great venue and well worth going off the beaten path from the DC scene to check out some really good theater.
Maggie Young
Close and ample parking garages. Excellent local actors sharing their gifts.
Tom Ortiz
This is a great venue for musicals. There is a live orchestra and talent at every level that you would not expect at this level with such consistency. Always a great time.
Myra Woods
Such a fun theater with a great line up for this season. The location is super convenient, lots of restaurants close by and the theater itself is a lovely performance place.

Doug Rekenthaler Jr.
Saw Light Years with my wife, first time visit. Loved the musical and the venue. Intimate, comfortable, friendly staff, and easily accessible from DC and VA.
Michelle E. Carter
I've been here several times in the past 4 years to see shows. I live in nyc and the quality of shows here is truly to Broadway standards. When I won the Todaytix lottery for Freaky Friday but encountered technical errors, Emily Adler at the box office was a huge help in correcting a mishap.
David Banks
Outstanding performance, great venue, with coat check, ticketing and other staff doing superior efforts around customer service
Derrick Faison
Positive remarks about the movie. Though the drinks could have been a little bit colder. Nice place to hangout with family or friends. Good choice of plays.
Devon Tutak
Best at musicals, especially Sondheim. Other productions can be hit or miss, but usually includes some of DC's best talent, so always worth the risk.
