Reviews of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater
Had a fabulous date with my husband on a weekday evening seeing a heartwarming romantic comedy, "Holiday". We had several good laughs and were completely invested in the drama. It's definitely a holiday escape, and It's a must-see!
The play was staged on The Fichandler Stage, an epic, four-sided auditorium, with steeply raked seating tiers with bold, earthy exterior design. Audience members are never more than eight rows away from the action. The cast came out from all corners of the stage and even from below! And what's a show without a trapeze? :)
During the intermission, I had one of their specialty drinks, Anita's Flowers, and my husband had The Mary Pickford, Jr. a non-alcoholic drink. They were both surprisingly very good. I highly recommend ordering any drinks or snacks in advance. "Holiday" has two intermissions but they are only 10 minutes each!
Absolutely beautiful and has magnificent architecture. Upstairs had an overlook where you can see the DC streets. So definitely arrive a little before your show to enjoy this experience as well.
Paid street parking, as well as garage parking, are available.
Had an amazing time as a cool friend date during the amazing American Prophet show. I'm the type that loves historical pieces that are about real people who made a difference. It's especially important for me to support productions showcasing true POC talent with amazing vocals the draws heart wrenching emotions. I especially loved the depiction of President Lincoln in a more critical light than we're used to.
Cornelius Smith Jr. was a star in his lead role as Fredrick Douglass (with two S's!) But my absolute favorite character was Anna Murray Douglass played by Kristolyn Lloyd. Really felt the genuineness of her performance and she shined throughout.
I will have to definitely come back to the Arena Stage for more performance and I sincerely hope you come back as well.
Pro tip: intermission is really quick so consider just bringing your own bottle of water to drink outside the theater during break.
What a great theater. Love the huge variety of shows they offer with fabulous casts!! Some are fun and some make you think about the world we live in, both past and present. The musicals are the best! ❤️🎭❤️ …
Hey DC 👋🏽👋🏽,
If you’re looking for something different to do this summer, I definitely recommend heading over to @arenastage & nabbing a few tickets for, American Prophet a play based on the legendary life of Fredrick Douglas 👣✒️.
If you arrive before your show, head upstairs to the overlook and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the dc streets from above with your libations and/or snacks. 🍸
** you must present your vaccine card, valid id, & have a mask to be admitted.😷☺️
Arena Stage Theater is a great place to see a play if you want to escape into another world for a little while! "Step Africa" is a wonderful play that's full of fun, energy, excitement, and amazement! It is especially nice for a family outing, and the kids will love it! If you get the chance, please go see this play wherever it's playing - it'll be worth your while!
Butterfly!
Went to see American Prophet. Outstanding play, very educational about Frederick Douglass, his life. Great singing.
Arena Stage is a neat place with several small theaters inside the same building. We really enjoyed watching "Ride the Cyclone" in the Kreeger Theater.
There is parking in the building but the entrance and exit ramps remind me of narrow parking lots in Asia. If you decide to park in the building, I recommend spending a few dollars more and valeting it at the front door instead.
I went to see Drumfolk and became a big fan of the Mead Center. The ticketing process was seamless as well as paying for parking in advance. The bar was nice and well-stocked. There are no bad seats since the performers face all directions. The stage was just the right size for the audience to be easily transformed into the electrifying story. I cant wait to attend my next play!!!
The Arena Stage is a wonderful place to see a show. There are three theaters inside the building. We saw Ride the Cyclone in the Kreeger Theater. An intimate little theater, and not a bad seat in the house! The show was amazing! The staff was so nice and helped us navigate around on our first time there. The concession stand has large selection of food and drinks and the prices are reasonable. There's lots of seating and tables in the common areas. As of Feb 2023 you need to wear a mask in the theaters, but they have them if you forget yours.
Small theater. All seats seemed to be good. View from Row F was clear. StepAfrika show was great, son enjoyed! 1st time there. Drink was fine, decent price.
Loved my first time at Arena Stage. Customer service was great at answering our questions prior to the show. Overall exclusive was great, though my only complaint was that it was a bit warm in the theater.
This huge space can also host weddings! Located literally steps from The Wharf, there are a few hotels you can get ready for your wedding at, take pictures at The Wharf and then have your ceremony and reception at the Arena.
With floor to very high ceiling windows, your ceremony and reception will be flooded with natural light. There is plenty of space to host a very large wedding here. They even have multiple options for where to host cocktail hour. The staff are really helpful and since they are used to making things run smoothly with huge performances, this is easy for them and they make it look effortless.
The biggest downside is the carpet running throughout the building. It's a dark brown with bright orange. It's not subtle or minimal but I'm sure most people won't notice it. However, it can be an element you need to think about when coordinating your colors and decor.
Very cool theater. Crazy there were multiple shows going on in different parts of the building. Ride the Cyclone was a lot of fun to see here.
This is one of DC's best theatres. It's been around for a long time, but was renovated a few years ago to add a really nice facade around the existing theatre buildings. Between Arena, Shakespeare Theatre, Studio, and Woolly Mammoth, there are a lot of good theatres in this town.
One of the stages in particular is a little unusual - it’s surrounded on all four sides with chairs, and actors enter and leave the stage from the four corners. It gives you an unusual view of a play, and the plays typically use this to their benefit. This one stage is what gives Arena its name. The remaining stages are more conventional.
The quality of their work is really good. Recently, we saw August Wilson's "Two Trains Running", which is a great play and was performed excellently.
Since last posting, we've seen several plays, including "American Prophet" - a musical about the life of Frederick Douglass until the end of the Civil War. There are some obvious comparisons you can make with "Hamilton", but I liked this a lot more than I expected. And on a personal level I'm a lot more interested in Douglass than Hamilton.
Saw an excellent Sunday matinee of Ride the Cyclone! Great theater with unique offerings. Don’t forget a mask!
I see maybe two shows a year here, but I've also been to yoga with the American Pops, Arena Community Day, and DC Theater Week Kick Off events. I have enjoyed all of them!
Fichandler Stage is in the round and sometimes I worry that it will be weird watching from behind the actors but they move enough that you see everyone fine and it gives you a different perspective, like you are actually part of the show.
I just saw Newsies and it was amazing! The sound is not that great but the singing and dancing are wonderful. My seat was on the West side, Row D near aisle 5 and I thought it was perfect. I didn't have to strain my neck up or down.
I got to the theater early so I decided to visit the cafe for chocolate cake and coffee. Both were pretty terrible. I recommend going elsewhere beforehand or bringing your own coffee.
Fun experience with the special effects. You had to wear a mask the whole time but they kept you interested in the show.
I love Arena stage. There are a several relatively small theaters and a restaurant. The restaurant is very reasonably priced but the food has a slight cafeteria edge. The theatre is relatively new and modern. You get a good view from almost any seat. It is walking distance from the metro and right next door to a parking building. They have valet parking right at the entrance of the theatre for $25 which is very handy when you are late. The plays are mostly modern with a sprinkling of musicals. If you sign up for email they sometimes do discounts and they often have pay your age.evenings. On the whole I have yet to see something that I didn't like at Arena and more often than not I have seen something that I loved. There is a nice Indian restaurant and modern American at the Station which are walking distance.
My wife, her sister and mother have had subscriptions for years and once I was part of their group. I dropped out after what I thought was a particularly bad season. Now I come occasionally when one of the group can't make it.
But as others have, I'll break down the review into facility and plays.
First the facility is amazing and the staging excellent and the concession good. At this point in our understanding (March 2022), I find the mask requirement and vax card screening unnecessary and ridiculous.
The plays are often heavy handed in their messages and often preachy. If one is conservative (moderate myself) you won't find much balance in the material/subject matter or political slant.
The play I saw on this occasion, Change Agent, was interesting and while sitting right on the edge of preachy, decently covered a complex subject.
Went to see “Anything Goes” — just LOVED it!!!
Everyone here is polite and lovely. The space sparkles with Modernity and the players were fantastic!!! I can easily say now that I live in a city that loves and appreciates and supports the arts — every seat was filled!!! I’ve now bought a three show subscription.
aw the new musical "American Prophet", and it was AWESOME! It's a musical about Frederick Douglass' life with added calls to arms. The music had clear black gospel and blue/jazz roots that sounded great!
I loved the Arena Stage, the venue was very intimate, and all the staff and ushers were very kind. There is a mask and vaccination mandate for the shows as well.
The theatre is tells stories with DC flags and 51 state flags hanging to the store that sells many racial justice books. I was honored to see "American Prophet", and highly recommend people go see it.
I will say the intermission didn't seem long enough, and we did not have enough time to use the restrooms and get drinks before we had to go back in, but that's me nitpicking.
Always a great experience and the play "Holiday" was a very witty, well thought out and appropriate production. We had a blast!
Highly recommend. There is something special about live theatre. The entire experience is wonderful at Arena Stage!
Been to see a couple plays. Here it is a great venue. Convenient location. Great shows
It's a little hard to capture my opinion of Arena Stage by a number of stars. Let's start with the good. It is a very nice space. I really like the physical theatres and the stages. However, the shows I have seen (the entirety of the current season) just have not been particularly good in my opinion. The focus demographic of Arena Stage I will grant does not seem to be me. I think you will enjoy the shows more if you are closer to 60 than 30 years old. Historical characters, speculative fiction, strong/influential women, and the like have been highlighted this season. It's not exactly that I feel like the shows they put on don't reflect my values, I just don't think the shows have been particularly intriguing plays.
I always want to enjoy my experience at the Arena Stage more than I inevitably do. I don't feel like I'm the target audience for many of the shows, though some I really like. Most everyone that works there is always lovely and nice. The one exception being my last visit when an employee, who was actually sitting in the audience, was quite surprisingly rude and disrespectful to us. While it did happen and it's impacted my personal feelings about this theatre, I will say that every other employee has always been incredibly gracious, nice and helpful. If you are looking into a show here, you should do it. It may not be the best experience ever, but you'll almost certainly have a good time.
Wonderful experiences. Enjoyed the Kreeger Theater at the Mead Center for Ride The Cyclone.
Watch a great presentation of Catch Me If You Can last night. It was the final night of the show and there was a special energy to the performance. The theater at Arena Stage is set in the round and there isn't a bad seat. We actually recommend sitting up at least halfway back as it gives you a clearer view of the entire stage. The ushers were very helpful and numerous. All in all a marvelous example of professional theater
Very clean facility. Lighting is awesome. Glad to see em open back up the stages.
I really enjoy Arena Stage. However, the seats at the Kreeger are so closely packed together that it did affect the experience. Fortunately, the performance, American Prophet, was so good that the tight seating almost didn't matter.
I came here to watch Seven Guitars on a Friday night recently, and the venue was quite awesome. I got under 30 tickets right a few hours just before the show, and they checked for covid vaccination and ID at the door. The venue was really clean and so were the bathrooms. The stage was unique as the audience sat all around the stage, really cool! The show itself was just alright as the story was slow in the beginning but picked up at the end. Cool spot though!
The shows at Arena Stage are absolutely outstanding on so many levels! Give yourself a gift and get to one (or all) of their shows. I especially love all of the different stages they have at their disposal! The diversity they bring to the DC theatre scene is needed and absolutely wonderful. 5 stars, highly recommend!!
Always an awesome time
Each time I experience Arena Stage. I have only positive experiences. Great theater, great atmosphere, polite attendees and a good Cafe.
Just saw Anything Goes at Arena. This production is beyond Broadway-worthy and the cast is phenomenal! Highly recommend everyone to try to see it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 …
Great concert
I like coming here. The plays are often staged in a theater in the round setting where the audience can get an intimate experience. The building itself is home to several theaters each different. The admission price is very reasonable as well. Just be aware that the parking garage fills up fast. There is additional parking a couple of blocks away that can fill up fast as well so get there early.
I've missed the Arena Stage. We finally got back to see Toni Stone last night. (It's good, go see it!) Arena is doing a pretty good job with the covid-19 dance. The ID and proof of vaccination check at the door was more than just for show, and they only use one theatre per night to limit crowds in the atrium. Taking out the atrium chairs and closing the water fountains seems a bit theatrical for an airborne contagion but, eh, they're trying. Despite the mandatory mask I felt more comfortable than expected. Nice job Arena.
Am a regular patron and was pleased with the covid protection procedures - good and reassuring. Food and beverage situation is still unpleasant/nonexistent. Thought this was not one of their best shows so can't rate it highly. But the theater is not full and that probably makes a difference in the audience energy level for the performers. But glad to be back in theater seats! Look forward to the next performance, Celia and Fidel.
Loved the arena stage set-up! Wonderful plays come through here.
We saw Sanctuary City 10/22, amazing performance by the cast!
Always entertaining! Plays cover historical events, places and people. Casts are extraordinary, realistic and take time to listen to audience after the plays. Awesome venue. Covid safety precautions.
Excellent venue. Great stage performances. Food and drinks. Helpful staff.
Arena Stage is always a exceptional experience. If you enjoy good theater... this is a "must go" destination.
Great venue and the production team was absolutely incredible
It was good to be out enjoying an event. The facilities were spartan but understandable given we are still in a pandemic. Staff was friendly without being overbearing. No food or drinks onsite yet. They did offer snacks during the intermission. Staff checked your ID, tickets and vaccine card before you could enter. Remember to bring that vaccine card, folks. For the first time we paid for parking. Don't know why we didn't before. It's tight to get in and out of but worth it. Looking forward to my next event.
Had the time of my LIFE!!! Can't wait for the new season to begin.
Just saw "Ride the Cyclone" and it was really well done.
It's a very nice place and the show was amazing!! Amazing experience for my school trip and I HIGHLY recommend going here! Would definitely come back if I had the chance!!
CATCH me If You Can was so entertaining. Great energy. Christian Thompson is a multi talented actor as the lead actor. 👏. A great way to spend the evening …
Great show so much history I didn't know and told beautifully
With seating circulating the entire stage, the Fichandler Stage puts the audience close to the action. However, it is difficult for the actors to address the entire audience at once. When actors had their backs to me, it was sometimes hard to pick up all the dialog. Adjusting the acoustics would help. Still it was an enjoyable night with live threater.
This place is amazing. I've never seen a bad performance here. The theatres are great. You'll love the sets, the costumes, the acting. Every bit of every show. Also, the staff are kind and helpful and appreciate that a trip to the theatre is a big deal for a lot of us. It's a magical place doing great work. (And they have so many stalls in the women's bathroom I've never had to wait in line.)
The performance, 7 guitars, was fine. But the theater itself was very warm, uncomfortably so. It made the late night show difficult to stay awake throughout the whole thing.
Wonderful venue, very intimate. Not a bad seat anywhere
It's a great sounding space and intimate space that simultaneously feels open and spacious.
Great experience in the Fichlander Stage seeing "The Great Society." Easy metro access and right next to the Wharf!
Beautiful venue, the staff was so friendly, warm, welcoming, and it was a fantastic experience.
We have had season tickets for about 25 years. Out of about 200 shows, only about 3 were not good. Most often, the plays are outstanding, including the first 3 thus far this season. There are almost no seats that I would say No to when I need to change performances (easy to do). I am usually amazed by the set designs. Only on rare occasions is there a weak person in a cast. We have enjoyed it so much that we are moving a block away from it as part of out later life downsizing.
1st class productions at a beautiful location. The staff are truly friendly and very professional.
My niece Jenelle Odom from Howard University participated in the New Voices of America competition. She has on the red dress.
Great Venue to see a theater event in a smaller setting, creative use of space. Also excellent for social events in the lobby with decent drinks & light food. Use the safe & convenient underground parking if you can get it.
I've lived this place for years and there commitment to share space, in support of community and youth theater. It is handicapped accessible...they have elevators. And a great gift shop with unique gifts games, jewelry, books and other wonderful treasures. In fact, if you need a thoughtful gift, go there first. The plays are wonderful.
This is one if the premiere theaters for live performance of Broadway quality shows in the Washington DC area.
well not every performance can please everybody I find that the execution and talent of this theater group is marvelous and always engaging and entertaining.
In addition, it's in the Waterfront area of DC which is undergoing a Renaissance with restaurants walking paths and becoming a very cool place to hang out.
if you find yourself in DC for the weekend always check their schedule to see what plays you can see. they serve wine beer and soft drinks in the building and I think they have a small restaurant upstairs with a limited menu. You can bring drinks inside the theater and I recommend putting a lid on them and you should also take the time to look around because the building has very tall glass windows and has a nice view of all the construction going on at the Wharf. the venue is handicapped accessible and has elevators and automatic doors and a very helpful staff of docents.
I was able to see and hear well from upstairs in the balcony. The ushers were extremely helpful in showing us to our seats. The restrooms were clean and easily accessible, once outside the auditorium. We even got to greet a couple of the stage actors afterward, as we waited for the valet to bring us our car.
The Arena Stage does a wonderful job of bringing excellent theater to many people. I have to say I still miss the old arena Stage that felt more intimate and personal. The new building is massive and with the impossible traffic and parking outside and the hordes vying for bathrooms and beverages I feel herded like cattle while there. And the cafeteria food is... I'll be nice and say mediocre.
Criticisms aside, I've been a loyal customer for 40 years and hope to continue for another 40. The Productions are usually fantastic , well worth the hassles described above. The stage sets, acoustics, and seating arrangements are excellent, and the staff couldn't be friendlier. Thank you for all of it.
Great place to host an event or watch theater. Ample restrooms and common areas. Plenty staff and volunteers to assist you with your needs. Easy setup.
Great theatre with three stages, a cafe, and easy metro access. Every show this season has been wonderful.
The business is adhering to vaccination check and masks.
Arena Stage has several different sized theaters for a completely new experience with each show. I have been blown away by the innovative productions and superb acting many times. We also had the pleasure of staying for a lecture following a performance that featured the writers of the show. It was fantastic. If you enjoy the theater and want an intimate experience right here in DC, Arena is phenomenal.
Beautiful theater near the Potomac River and the Wharf waterfront. All glass facade facing the Potomac.
Theater itself is well laid out. The architecture is inspiring. There are several theaters within the structure. The theater I was in was very intimate. Seated approx 300. Acoustics were wonderful. The event was very well done and performed that I attended.
The lobby area is clear story, very open & grand.
I came here to see the Snow Child, and the production was pretty good. It wasn't wowing, but it was fairly good. The props were fun and creative, and so was the acting, but it just didn't feel like a 5-star production. In addition, it was freezing during the show, and the theater felt kind of cramped and like it could use more space. But I did enjoy that they had screens outside the theater where you could read about the creator of the play and the background behind it, and the whole building had an awesome modern feeling to it.
Arena Stage is a great theater showcasing well-known favorites and new works alike. Featuring local, national, and international talent, Arena Stage is a great place to take in a world-class show. It's also extremely accessible and conveniently located near a number of restaurants and nightlife at the Waterfront.
Free booster walkin scheduled time shot site location that day. They were for mother and children without us aware being in line util 3:30pm opening then from lack of participation gathering, they took all of us few.Spacious indoor for administering the booster shot with all three choices to choose from and separate room for waiting after the shot with Christmas Store movie to watch.
Great venue, all seats are good
Lovely performing arts space. I have seen several musicals and plays here. They have all been wonderful experiences. Highly recommend a special night out here for any singles or couples!
Beautiful place to see a show. Went to see American Prophet amazing show.
Very cool theater that underwent an extensive renovation and the outcome is amazing! The shows that I've seen there are excellent, particularly the past production that I saw, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner!" The intimate stage entrances and enthrals the viewer as they watch the show - check it out for yourself! Come slightly early before the show if are planning on parking a car, the valet can get a bit overwhelmed.
Get here TODAY! This theater is a hidden secret to unlock the dreams of your imagination. It has everything for those into arts or just interested in something different. From theater production to weddings and events....you can deliver the most exciting times in this place. Stop by for a show or just to browse....Lights, Cameras, Action!!!
This is a great place to see wonderful, diverse and very entertaining plays. The foyer is very spacious and grand, but when there are 3 shows, it can be crowded with overlapping intermissions. Parking options under the theater and nearby along with a very short walk to the Metro make “getting there” a breeze.
Top quality! From the front desk staff to the ushers to the shows themselves, it's a wonderful experience. The venue is intimate, but the talent is of the highest order. Coming here will spoil you on other venues.
Great place. We were season ticket holders for years until 4 years ago when the choice of plays became disappointing. We stayed away until this season when we ventured back. It has been a delight season. The venue is wonderful with the three theaters that offer their own unique presentation. We are glad we came back.
This was our first time back since the complete rebuilding of the Arena theatre complex. Our show was at the Kreeger. Such a great place to see live theatre. It's a fairly intimate theatre space with a balcony, and there are NO bad seats. Also has food available before a show. Reserve parking under the building with your ticket, as finding other parking is a pain.
Arena Stage is an extraordinary theater capable of creating fantastic dramatic experiences. It has evolved from a first class regional theater to a truly first class national theater and its current production of August Wilson's Jitney is a tribute to just how good theater can be. Please treat yourself to a marvelous show, brilliantly written, expertly directed and acted, with all the set and setting one could possibly wish. It's also worth noting that the Mead Center which houses Arena is a stunning piece of architecture.
The quality of the productions is awesome. The theaters are initimate. So, there is not a bad seat in the house. You can eat there and enjoy a glass of wine or something a little stronger. Prepaying for parking in the garage is also nice.
Came with my daughter, a student journalist, to see Newsies. Play was canceled due to actor illness so we saw Dear Jack, Dear Louise. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Simple, yet captivating story with complex themes. Venue is easy to find, valet parking is easy. Box office staff and ushers are extremely helpful.
I had the pleasure of visiting Arena Stage for the first time today. The property is lovely, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the theater is intimate. When I arrived at my seat, there was an envelope with my name on it. Inside I found a note welcoming me to the show and a small gift. The shows at Arena Stage are often pre-Broadway productions. It is exciting to be part of a show at this early stage in the lifecycle. Live theater is special and I am grateful to have found a new place in DC to experience it. I will surely be back.
Great venue, awesome productions, superb acting and a wide variety of productions each season. Everything from classic musicals to cutting edge politically oriented plays. 3 separate theaters enabling multiple productions to be underway simultaneously.
I went there for my Covid-19 J&J One Shot. Never been there before and had to walk around for a while. I opened Google to find Area Stage. People were giving Me wrong directions off the Metro Rail Station. On the way back home I walked shortly to the Station one block away.. Had I'd known. Got a good workout....👍🤔 …
The productions aren't always top shelf, but it's really nice to have this place nearby. Where else is one going to see all of Lillian Hellman's plays either in full production or in good readings with good actors? Everyone in the US should pay Arena Stage a visit, to see a production of a play or musical comedy there.
I attended a conference here, and enjoyed it! There were several locations within the building that accommodated us throughout the day. Lunch was served, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The floors are concrete, which can be unforgiving in heels, but despite that, this is a nice venue for your event.
Really fun and unique place to see shows. Just wish parking wasn’t such a pain. Construction right now combined with possible baseball games and other concerts/events at nearby venues is something to factor into your planning.
We have been ushering at Arena Stage for six years now and each season just gets better and better! Last night we saw Jubilee! and it was glorious and totally uplifting! For those interested in ushering, they are looking for ushers for next season, so sign up own for next season...its worth it!
Great site. All covid precautions firmly adhered to. Both theaters are easily accessible, good acoustics, wonderful sightlines. By all means, GO.
It's a lovely place. We were able to have dinner, which was really good, before the play. Seating was great for us, in & out in no time. Would suggest this for any plays or programs. The ushers were very helpful.
All the seats seem great, they did an amazing job with the play having limited props and 4 sides
Arena Stage is an architectural gem and has been an anchor of Southwest DC for more than 50 years. Loyalty runs high among neighbors, also thanks to their deep discounts on Southwest night for those who reside nearby. Even at a discount however, I'm rethinking how often I want to attend. The hit:miss ratio in my view is getting a little low. I'm not a fan of old-time musicals with outdated gender stereotypes, and many of the other recent productions have been too "talky" (they tell not show, feel like a lecture without emotional connection, etc.) or are just not entertaining. It's definitely a bell curve: a couple great ones like All the Way, some where you can't wait to leave at intermission like Kleptocracy, and most of the rest in the middle. We'd like to keep supporting them, yet plan to wait for more reviews next season before purchasing tix. They offer half price tickets 30 minutes before the show, if available, which lessens the risk.
Parking is horrendous. The lot across the way is closed for construction and there's no mention in rhe website. The meteo (waterfront or Lenfant) were easy metro stops.. The play, however, was wonderful!
Great variety of shows regarding relevant societal topics. Venue is easy to access since it outside of downtown DC. Cost for shows is reasonable and parking is avilable.
The Arena Stage facility is structurally state of the art boosting 3 separate theaters under the same roof with underground Parking leading directly into the Theater Complex. Parking can be reserved in advance. A good court is also available."Smart People# is an outstanding play, very relevant theme, excellent performances by the cast, and the subject will give audiences something to ponder for a long time.
I recently went there for the opening night of a play, and the round seating format is a great way to see a play; far more intimate than 25 rows back at standard playhouse. There was a surprising amount of flexibility in stage mechanics, which allowed for fast scene transitions and actor entrances and exits. If I have any real complaint, it's that it's so inconvenient to get to, and most places are closed afterwards unless it's a Friday or Saturday.
One of the best playhouses in the country. Seen four performances this 2018-19 season and they were all memorable if not amazing (e.g. Indecent, Klepotocracy, JQA). Acting, staging and stage craft were some of the best I seen. All were Broadway quality. Lots of nice restaurants near by in SW or the Waterfront. Easy walk from the Metro. Recommend going regularly.
We went to "Dave" last night. This was our first visit to the Arena Stage since it was extensively remodeled. It is lovely. The play, a musical based on the movie with Kevin Klein was really fun and very well done.
The parking and drive to the theatre was awful. Plan for a one hour drive and reserve a parking spot in advance or take a cab/Uber. Gridlock, impatient drivers, drivers making abrupt lane changes, poorly planned U-turns, road "construction" (a generous term), pedestrians darting across moving traffic, oh my... anarchy.
Arena is a gem of American theater. It contains three stages under one dramatic roof, and often produces several plays simultaneously. Reflecting its location in D.C., nearly every production has a strong American angle, many focus on the city's storied past and political drama, and the subjects and casting draw on the city's rich ethnic diversity. Parking can be a challenge for those who don't reserve it via a seasonal subscription. Pre-show on-premises dining is available and has the advantage of expediency, but can't rise above cafeteria-quality. Right across the street though are the dozen or so great restaurants of the city's new on-the-water Wharf neighborhood.
I love there selection of plays especially the ones with political themes. I have been a subscriber for years and have never been disappointed. The productions always make me think. They have different stages for different types of experiences. The building is beautiful.
Very enjoyable and modern live theatre in DC, located near La'Enfant Plaza and next to the south side of the DC Warf. Has multple stages and typically more than one show at a time. Offers a consession bar with snacks, sandwhiches, and limited selection of beer, wine, and liquor/mixed drinks. Also has a restaurant, which is more like a fancy cafeteria (food was decent, but nothing to write home about). It's not the Kennedy Center, but a more affordable and approachable option for theatre entertainment. The acting was surprisingly good and the stage was uniquely positioned in the middle of the audience like a mini sports arena, which was different but worked.
Arena Stage treat subscriber holders very well. The only thing that's negative is the parking garage while they're handy is very tiny
Great food and great people. Will definitely recommend this place.
Great venue. Prepaid parking is easy and convenient. Located near the water; we had time to walk a bit before the show. Turn me Loose was very good.
I watched the musical Catch Me If You Can
I'm always excited to see a show at Arena Stage. They have almost no bad seats in the house, and their line-up is always thought provoking and well done. Grab a glass of wine or a cocktail at the bar, and enjoy the show!
Great venue with attentive and friendly staff. Anything Goes was awesome! The chemistry of the actors was perfect and the singing and dancing was amazing! Awesome performance of a classic.
I was here for the COVID-19 vaccine not to watch a play. I love this place, it seems like it would be a place that does some high quality acting. I would say I recommend it.
Arena Stage presents quality theater in a beautiful facility on the DC Waterfront. You can choose from pure entertainment or thought provoking productions. I see 4 or more plays annually at Arena Stage and have never been disappointed. Parking is sometimes a challenge with Nationals Baseball close by and the new Warf development rising around their facility. There is easy Metro access nearby that is a block away.
Saw at Saturday night performance of The Pajama Game. Super fun, high energy and funny! Also saw the Originalist and Dear Evan Hansen there a few years back. Definitely a great theatre! It'll be a fun night out!
I enjoyed the production very much. The actors are excellent but Heather Velazquez performance is outstanding!
Arena Stage's three theaters feature consistently high quality performances of inspiring, creative, and thought-provoking plays and musicals. The architecture of the Center is itself a creative tour de force, a fascinating place with interior and exterior views and comforts, including food and beverages, and the best "necessary" rooms in the city!
Love Arena Stage. The plays & musicals are top notch! The facility is beautiful & the staff is so helpful & friendly. Each time we go to Arena Stage we have a fabulous time!
I came here for the first time to see My Fair Lady and not only did I LOVE the show, I was totally impressed with the building itself. Our show was in one auditorium and it appears there are more than 1 space for shows. I liked the "theatre-in-the-round" setup - it allows you to see all the action without having to crane your neck. It's also close to the Waterfront Metro so it's relatively easy to access. The only downside is the lack of dining options - there's Station 4 and a ZBurger but that's about it. Just plan to dine elsewhere and commute to the show!
Wonderful building. Saw the Great Society- well directed and acted slice of history. Love that Arena Stage has a nice ticket promo for residents of the neighborhood.
Friends and I saw "A Thousand Splendid Suns" at the Kreeger Theater tonight. The theater is small and intimate. All aspects of the production- set, acting, lighting, etc were superb.
We saw Newsies and it was awesome. What made it even better was the arena style seating all around the stage. There was not a bad seat and it felt like you were in the play.
Great venue. Everyone is close to stage. Acoustics are very good. Performance of Anything Goes was outstanding.
Valet parking needs more staff in winter.
Very nice theater! We were in the smaller theater and the seats were a little tight! Overall the view from the audience was very nice (there are no bad seats)!! Jitney was amazing.
Nice place and no seat is bad...maybe a few tight seats but overall great place to watch a show. Parking is limited but if you Metro in off the green line to Waterfront stop it drops you off a block from the arena.
Arena Stage is a quintessential theatre going experience. The curation and production of shows explore the full gamut of what it means to be an American and to live in America. The work on stage lifts up the best of American Theatre's history, as well as pushes new boundaries. And the variety of venues in Arena Stage allows for a wide range of quality theatrical experiences for audience, made possible by a caliber of execution from masters in their craft, on stage and off.
Highly recommend the season pass to experience all the commissioned plays and new debuts of older productions
Located in Southwest DC, this is a local theater performing at a national level. Most performances are written by playwrights with a message. There are three theaters, a theater in the round -- The Fichandler, a "standard " theater -- The Kreeger and a small "developmental " theater -- The Kogod Cradle. Performances are well done with actors of national experience. The theater has valet parking but otherwise parking is limited in the area. The good news is that the Metro station is about a block away. There is a restaurant and bar in the building and there are a few others (mostly fast food) nearby. Lastly, the building is newly renovated, well maintained and has wi-fi, though they say you to turn off your phone during the performance; that might be difficult but definitely well worth it.
The building was modern and clean. The stage that I went to, Kogod, was cozy and made the musical feel more intimate. All of the seats were wide and had a nice view of the stage.
All Stages - Great Seating; Great Environment; Employees are the absolute best- whether in person or on the phone!Valet Parking; Easily Accessible. I haven't eaten here, but I would imagine that it would be quite acceptable.
First visit after three big renovation, amazing new space while maintaining the intimate feel of the theater's. And, A Thousand Splendid Suns was definitely worth seeing, too.
I love seeing plays at the Arena stage - always very thought provoking. The intermission drink/snack service is the best thing since sliced bread, but their "restaurant-cafeteria" needs to decide which it is and adjust their staff accordingly.
We get season tickets every year. Each year sees a great variety of shows and talent. It will only get better as the downtown wharf area is fully developed.
Newsies was a blast. Terrific choreography, amazing tap sequences. It's hard to take the plot seriously if you've seen Urinetown beforehand, but lots of fun.
The August Wilson play entitled "Jitney" was fantastic!!! The cast did an awesome job!! The play has been extended until October 27th. You'll be glad you went!❤️
Love the intimate stage, and the new District Wharf is walking distance (almost makes up for the lousy Cafe and bar). Have seen several plays this season: talent and production are very good.
Great performance last night. Watched Dave at the kreeger theater within the arena stage. Every seat had a perfect view. Even mine in the back row.
Watched catch me if you can. Seats were nice. Food and drink were good and good hospitality.
Friendly staff and two excellent stages make a wonderful night. They don't price gouge for drinks either.
The shows are on-the-ground oriented.
My first time in the theater and I had a great experience. The play was amazing. Would love to come go back to DC to see another.
A unique experience for me. I have never been to a production where the stage is down in the middle of the audience. The orchestra pit was elevated above the stage giving it a very unique look for the production of Carousel.
Wonderful place to see theater. Viewing is great from every seat in this "theater in the round".
Great theatre venue. Decent cafeteria style meals before performances. Adjacent to new DC waterfront development with its myriad dinner choices.
Small theater in diverse area of DC. Thoroughly enjoyed August Wilson play, Jitney! Great restaurants within walking distance. Plan to attend soon.
Parking garage was great and the play was even better!!
Architecturally, a gem. The artistic director selects Fab shows with incredible production values. The selection of plays can be a little too consciously "progressive", and in consequence too earnest. I say this as a someone on the port-side wing-tip of the US political airplane.
This is a lovely theater it's almost like a great meeting place to take all your friends and family members to see the theater and then have a cup of coffee or glass of wine or tea this is the best to go I mean they really have outdone their self with this one this time
Great experience. Friendly and accommodating staff. I came too late for the first show and the staff was more than helpful in exchanging my tix for the next show.
I always learn something new about the events in the performance. I enjoy reading the information before the play that is shared on the new kiosks near each stage. They add a special insight to the experience and perspective as it is presented throughout the production.
One of my favorite places to work! The Arena family is the best and they take great care of their actors. Great shows!!!
Just got finished enjoying the show The Heiress. Was the best show I have ever seen in awhile. The acting was wonderful and the energy was incredible. Would go see this again.
Arena Stage is the best theater in Washington DC It has
fantastic shows. With a subscription, it is easy to change dates for shows. Every seat in the house is excellent. MOBY DICK show was outstanding.
Excellent venue. We saw Drumfolk and loved it.
Great seating and stage set up. Been several times and hoping to go back sooner than later. Enjoyed seeing a lot of local talent.
Glad for restarting with the new-to-the-human-species disease Covid-19 in mind with vaccination proof and masks required.
Do be careful exiting the garage if you use it
Saw the musical Dave. Excellent and funny. Every seat a great seat. Ticket prices are very affordable. The tour is very educational too.
I love Arena Stage in particular the play today Jubilee. All the seats are great seats no matter where you are seated and the performance today was amazing.
A great time had by all!
The performance was good. The facility is nice. The atmosphere is too stark. The pre fixe meal was horrible. Most of the staff were very dull and they looked at the patrons as though they were intruders . Not pleasant at all.
Arena Stage is a real jewel. Productions are always first rate. And now with the development of the Wharf across the street there are plenty of pre or post show dining and beverage spots nearby.
Great atmosphere, intimate setting and entertaining experience.
Plays: Fidler on the Roof, Sovereignty, A Thousand splendid suns.
Utterly amazing.
A must see....
wonderful venue with terrific shows. major pain in the *** to park. they need to do something about that or risk losing subscribers and patrons especially as construction within the area (Waterfront) increases.
Saw a great show, Turn Me Loose! Love the facility and the staff! The theater is awesome. Will definitely return. <3
Classy ... Great box office service ... All seats are terrific, intimate venue
Enjoyed the play. The Arena Stage also has vert good COVID protocols in place.
The wedding I filmed at this location was beautiful. Garage parking is almost a must. The wharf area is extremely crowded on Saturdays.
Interesting space with lots of theaters inside. The theater I was in was stuffy however like had no AC. Definitely would recommend going to check out this interesting venue.
Today was the start of Theatre Week at Arena Stage. Theatres from all over the DMV was there!
There was something for everyone......GO!
"Theatre is for all race of people!"
Please support "THE ARTS" ! Enjoy!
Thr architecture is so beautiful! We went to see Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. It was a very interesting talk and song program!
Awesome venue. Catering staff served delicious food. Definitely a great place for birthdays, weddings, and other personal events.
Lovely architecture, friendly staff, talented actors, and well-staged productions.
I've been impressed with the venue, as well as the performances I've seen there such as Ann and Jitney. There's not a bad seat in the house.
The plays are excellent. The atmosphere is comfortable. Once you visit you can't wait to come back to see another play.
I've seen several plays here. Never disappointed in a performance however I wish the plays were just a little bit shorter or they invest in more comfortable chairs.
As always, I enjoyed a wonderful performance at The Arena Stage. Turn Me Loose was very powerful! It's a must see!
This was my first time going to this place. I thought it was extremely nice. Multiple theaters. Concessions. Good local restaurants in walking distance. Good stuff
One of the best spots for American Theatre. Timeless, relevant, heartfelt plays and musicals. Definitely one of the top east coast theaters.
I go to a few shows and there is a great sense of integrity for the arts seeing the ushers dressed in uniform and shutting the doors promptly before the shows start.
Great play, "Dave". Helpful volunteers to show you to your seat, and steer you in the right direction. Convenient parking under the theater.
I love this musical hall due to its beautifully designed style. You can easily check lots of performances on its website and you will never be disappointed.
Beautiful updated space. Nit a bad seat in any if the three theaters. I love to see the sets in the Fichlander where they have to address all four sides.
Easy like I like it ,parking under the building take elevator or walk up to the theater lobby you can eat if you want to and enjoy a wonderful show
Historical DC theater on the waterfront. Many good restaurants nearby for a full and convenient evening out. There's a show for everyone there!
lovely little spot to find inspiration!
The show was excellent. Beautiful costumes and the actors were stupendous. My family and I had a wonderful time.
Great, intimate atmosphere for a show, and the show itself was outstanding. Newsies had an extremely talented and energetic cast.
The food was great. We were there for a wedding and it was handled very professionally and a lot of fun
Season tix include musicals, diverse dramas, political histories, and preBroadway runs (Evan Hanson was here first). Perhaps the best set designs in the country.
Really great way to cap off a trip to the nation's Capitol! The performance was excellent and the pricing was very competitive, even if the food was rather lacking
Extremely well designed theater in the round. The name tells it all. You do feel like your in an arena getting ready to watch a boxing match.
Very nice. Always a charm.
Terrific venue. The staging is phenomenal. Great shows. Parking isn't always easy but there is valet.
All of ushers were so pleasant! The production was amazing! Concessions were overpriced but served with wonderful smiles
Loved this space. Attended a conference there and was enthralled with the various spaces available for different types of sessions. The restroom and eating facilities are also very well maintained.
I always have s wonderful time there when I go. Now they changed their restaurant around and the food is over priced for a bunch of small plate options tapas style. Next time I will eat up the street
I went here to see a show. The facility was nice and clean, I wish there was free parking but of course not in dc. But overall I had a good experience.
Arena Stage is three lovely in one beautiful space. The shows are top notch, and the staff are very professional.
We have season tickets and have yet to have a bad experience. Great location and beautiful venue.
One of my favorite theatres in town. Such great shows and an awesome view of the river from the main lobby.
First time visiting but the experience was memorable. I loved that you could get dinner and a show in one place. Great location.
Every seat is a good seat. Great acoustics.
Great performance halls. Sometimes the shows are a bit too leading-edge. "Dave," for example was not necessarily ready for primetime.
Cool venue with fantastic architecture. All the theaters are on the small side, so you get a great intimate night of theater
All seats are great. Show was fabulous. Ended up buying season tickets.
Great venue for shows! I love the new building and the ambience. Parking is always an adventure!
Play was very interesting as are all the ones by August Wilson. They are always enjoyable.
Jitney was wonderful. The all Male or mostly Male actors was extraordinary. I love Arena stage.
It was great! Every seat was great in the Chandler Theater. The show was wonderful- Anything Goes!
One of the great regional theaters in the Unites States of America, producing important, diverse, entertaining and original works on three stages.
Celia and Fidel allowed me to imagine how it was between the two notable revolutionary figures of Cuba.
I love this place so much! Oh I love being down there, I loved the plays I've seen. The best theatre in town.
This place is gorgeous. Such an amazing environment for theater. Close to the waterfront for good eats. Stunning theaters.
Saw Nina Simone: 4 women. Arena stage is lovely. The play was just ok. No wow factor.
This is my second time coming to see a play here. Very nice. Lovely atmosphere. Allow for traffic when coming here very busy because it’s by the Wharf.
Excellent Date-night spot🤩 …
The performance was excellent and the building is very sophisticated and clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. An overall terrific experience!
Luckily u Usher there. The shows are fabulous!
Love the plays the have there. I slight complaint...food...I had a veggie wrap which was stale (the spinach wrap was awful...too tuff). Don't order the wraps.
The play "Ann" was excellent. Seating great. Food, not so good, not many choices. The upgrades are nice.
Great intimate theater, good efficient bar for intermission. parking is tough pick up drop off tough.
Very cozy. It's very easy to hear and understand the performers.
Food there is very pricey though.
Power plays that inspire the masses and represent contemporary America! Beautiful architectural structures, engaging community events and top talent!
Huge area with a wonderful view of the Monument. Multiple bars within and the balcony is good for a drink.
Absolutely beautiful theater space!
Dave was a spectacular play . We thoroughly enjoyed it. Arena Stage is a nice setting.
Three different sized stages allow them to show unknown works and classics alike. Reliably good and in a gorgeous building.
The Arena Stage has been remodeled look beautiful and show we saw was great Pam. Game.
Amazing!
The seats were great, the space looked perfect to fit people to wait, and then watch a musical or play!
Great venue. Loved the staging in the smaller venue. The Arena Stage is a great community space.
Went to see Anything Goes. Enjoyed it tremendously and cast gave outstanding performance. Also loved the costumes!!!
Facilities are new. Parking situation was atrocious. Not a good conference location, but plays or other things could be better there.
It always delivers a fabulous experience no matter what the nature of the play. Ann is a must see. We are season holders.
Its very up close an personable. Ever seat is a good seat. Sound system is good. Clean and people are very helpful.
The Drum Talk performance was absolutely fantastic!
Play was great except for one thing. ..couldn't hear some of the actors! Also need better food options.
"Catch Me if You Can" was performed very well! I'd see it again.
Wonderful plays at a much more reasonable price than Kennedy Ctr or Signature. Traffic is a problem with new Harbor traffic. Take Metro.
Very nice facility! Show was in relatively intimate environment which made seeing, hearing, everything great! Take Uber there.
1977 saw Happy the Man there and the entire concert done in the dark. Group was hot.
Used to be my favorite theater in DC but lately not as many shows of interest but Anything Goes was cute, and funny.
The show was very exciting and brilliantly done.
Outstanding venue. World class productions at a reasonable price. Our favorite theater in DC.
Great venue. Food was cafeteria style and a bit boring...but the venue and the show were great.
Wonderful show. Loved Jubilee. More plays about the African American experience.
Nice environment. I didn't like the seating, seats are too close together and there's no leg room. Very uncomfortable.
Play was thought provoking as usual. Snack bar before matinee improved but would have appreciated a salad choice.
Extremely handicapped accessible! Arena Stage is in my top three theater choices in the DMV.
Superb in every way. Great acting, great production, great theater. Love this place!
Great shows and a great venue. This place provides an intimate venue to watch some wonderfully done shows.
Wonderful production! Very creative, excellent acting. I would see it again if given the chance.
A great place to see a show staff very friendly and helpful good seats all ways.
"Two Trains Running" was WONDERFUL! Theater was clean and comfortable. Enjoyable experience!
Great space and an easy walk from the Waterfront metro station. It’s a lovely venue to see a show.
Attended "Ann" in Kreeger Theater. Not a bad seat in the house, and the show was AMAZING! A must see!
Four Women was fantastic. A woman seated right behind me had a phone call that she couldn’t turn off. Had to get up and leave. 😡😡😡 …
Saw "Ann" at the Kreeger, great portrait of a fascinating character. Parking garage attendants are the best!
Took my Mom to see "Two Trains Running" and it was great, but of course, it was August Wilson's work!
Small intimate stage with comfortable seats. I enjoyed the show as well!
Great show and there aren't any bad seats. Like the venue.
Always a great time here. Quality productions and amazing venue!
Nice location but parking is extremely challenging. While there is limited parking under the venue, the parking staff are rude and dismissive.
Very nice theaters. Parking near is hard to get. So if convenient, take Metro .
Great performances, wonderful venue just steps from the new DC Waterfront.
Excellent theater experience. Fine acting, comfortable auditorium, useful amenities. Responsible staff.
I saw Jitney here. It was an awesome show! I will be back for Seven Guitars!
Excellent plays, excellent actors, beautiful theater; and, of course, the best director(s) in the world!
Amazing venues. One of the crown jewels of theater in DC region.
Great place to watch plays and musicals in the DC area lack of parking is not a problem if you Uber.
The production of Right to be Forgotten was outstanding. Small venue, easy access.
I love Arena's selection of plays- they are insightful, thought-provoking and always very entertaining.

Fantastic venue. Very classy. Friendly staff. Strong drinks. 😆 …
Great venue with not a bad seat in the house. Professional casts and productions.
You will love Smokey Joe's Cafe if you love great music, singing, dancing and costumes! FANTASTIC
Great space, great performances, now if they could only serve decent food...
Great conference location for large events. Parking is tough and metro Ⓜ is near but you know how the Metro Ⓜ is...
Very easy to find. The theater was well maintained and the show was so entertaining!
I am an avid theatre goer and a Washingtonian. Please visit, especially since its been remodeled. It's beautiful!!
1st stage show i saw, was here at the Original Arena Stage 60's...still famous...

Tremendous building and a world class theater set up. Imaginative and original shows.

A great experience.
We are relatively new subscribers, only 25 year's, but have been impressed so far.
Great for plays, not enough bathrooms and not enough doors in the theater.
There are always interesting shows to be seen in this beautiful theater!
Great venue for a show. And the shows themselves are excellent!
There is a discount fee for SW residents, which I was not aware of. I'm definitely going again soon.
