Reviews of Marriott Center For Dance

This a wonderful performance hall. The only reason I am giving this four stars is because of the bathrooms. For a medium venue, there are only three stalls in the women's bathroom. The acoustics in the auditorium is great. And no matter which seat you choose, you can see the stage. The lighting and the stage ate great for dance performances.

Went to school at the University of Utah and this is where I spent all of my days for four years. The building itself is relatively newer but with growing class sizes, there doesn’t seem to be enough studios. It was also designed so that the modern students were above the lobby and ballet students were below, but I think a more integrated community would benefit everyone. I loved these studios so much. I miss them everyday! Especially the in house theater!

Very good theatre. Excellent sight lines for all seats. Usually good parking available in front of building. A little pricey, but has option of extending time needed when linked to your smartphone. Parking meter takes credit cards

Beautiful, very pretty building and gorgeous girls dance students. They have classrooms and also a theater. Parking space all around the building. Campus Store is some 20 steps away and Marriott Library right across.

I have a complicated relationship with this building. Great memories and incredible disappointments. And I wasn't ever even a dance student here.
My first experience was for an audition for the ballet department. I was 18, overweight fo a dancer, and had come from a dance studio where we only had ballet two or three times a week. So of course I was not accepted.
It was ok though, because I got into the other program I was interested in; I spent my undergrad years just down the hill from MCD at the music building studying my other passion.
But before that happened, I did a ballet summer intensive with Ballet West. That was one of the best summers of my life. I still wasn't any good at ballet, but I loved working at dance for 6 hours a day for 8 weeks. I lost some weight and started to get to know members of the ballet community with whom I'd associate for the next 15 years. I learned a special loyalty for several wonderful people in that organization.
Because of that, I took many many open adult ballet classes while I studied music. I also took non-major ballet classes in the Marriott Center for Dance. They were wonderfully rigorous and with all that class I started to actually understand ballet. I also found some Russian teachers who helped me learn to turn out
I have wonderful memories of tracking across campus up the hill through sunshine and snow from my music studies to ballet class and back.
Once I was nearly finished with my music degree I knew I'd come to love ballet even more and I didn't see a problem with pursuing a second MFA. So I auditioned for the ballet program again. My little sister got into it; I never got a reply. When I went to speak with someone my questions were only answered with questions about why I would want another undergraduate degree. It was intimidating and very disappointed. I say this from my own point of view; now I see that those people did me a favor, despite what was to them a very awkward situation.
I also auditioned twice for the modern dance program, but I'm worse at modern dance than I am ballet.
Meanwhile I got married and am pursuing carers in music, music education, and dance.
I learned to accompany ballet classes on the piano.
Suddenly I am back at MCD for a Ballet West summer program, but I'm making the music!
This led me to accompany for both the MCD dance program and for Ballet West Academy. It is a weird feeling to be in that building where I always wanted to be accepted as a dancer. I am heartily accepted now as an artist, just in a different way. Currently I work as a substitute pianist, party because of their schedule and partly because of mine.
I also teach ballet, piano, and I run a small dance group with my church. I still take open classes at several studios around town. So it's just fine that I never got a ballet degree, I'm up to my neck in it all on my own.
So if you came here for a review of the building here it is: it beautiful. High ceilings, good floors for dancing, just a little gooshy, so don't over extend your plie in jumps. Nearly always live accompaniment, great faculty and teachers, high standards for training and performance. This is a wonderful place to learn the art of ballet, to dance, and to make music.
