Reviews of Portland Stage
We attend regularly and truly enjoy the experience, but yesterday evening's performance of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure was absolutely amazing. We just wish to express how exciting and perfectly done it was. Thank you, all, for such excellence!
Every show I've ever seen here has been amazing. The staff are friendly and helpful.
Great performance of The Christmas Carroll! Cast was amazing! Theatre is very charming and cozy.
Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill was excellent. There were several ushers to assist patrons to their seats. The seats were relatively comfortable. There dodnt seem to be a bad seat on the house. The theatre was clean and so was the lav. There are a few parking lots and a garage nearby. I didn't visit the bar pre show but there is one.
My wife and I loved the play. Found it original and wonderful. The musical accompaniment was enchanting…very professional, and enhanced the experience of the evening.
If we could afford it, we would come again!
Interesting local place for theater in Portland. The building is a historic international order of odd fellows property with a 100+ seat auditorium. They build all sets and sew their costumes on site. You can even stay, as I did, at one of their Airbnb listings to help support their efforts (and perhaps run into one of the actors.
Can't comment much on the quality of the plays overall as I've only seen one and it was a preview show (I enjoyed it)
Great venue! WOW! This is a cast of incredibly musically talented people! I'm so glad I got the opportunity to see them! The Cash family would be proud and I think Johnny would have been humbled by the appreciation the cast and audiences show his
lifes' work!
Great place! Seating was very comfortable. The stage is large and well lit. The show was fantastic!
I loved this play; the writing, the actors, the set. I laughed out loud and was often close to tears. How lucky we are that the author came to be in the play! I wish I could see it performed again.
Until last week, I felt pretty safe at Portland Stage. Last year they installed special air filtration, we were masked and they seated us with Physical Distancing.
Last week they checked vaccine cards and folks were masked, but there was no Physical Distancing at all.
We were seated right next to strangers. And the woman a few seats away on our other side was seated next to strangers. There was plenty of room on the sides of the aisle and in the back.
With the virus numbers about the highest ever this is very disturbing.
Slightly overpriced for the quality of the play that I saw but still felt okay because you did something that night and you contributed to a good cause
Awesome performance in a fun environment they have acting camps and they let the actors lead the production
Also they are very LGBTQ+ friendly
Took our parents to see A Christmas Carol, the production was very well done and they cast was great! The theater itself is small, so there really isn't any bad seating and it's very pretty. I do wish it had a bigger sign out on the street. You could definitely just walk by if you didn't know what you were looking for.
One of my three favorite theatres in southern Maine. My all-time favorite theatre. Seating capacity is ideal, bringing the attendees together in a familial bond.
No seat is bad. Productions are expert from sets, acting, choice of plays, to refreshments!
Seats were uncomfortable. Parking is terrible and expensive compared to other local theatre's. Ushers were nice, polite. I have my druthers of possibly not going there again. Sorry.
If you're not a hard core liberal you'll feel out of place most of the time. The productions are always good and fun, but not Broadway by any means. Intimate theatre with no bad views. Passionate staff and performers. I've always reminisced my experiences fondly.
I've only seen a performance in the studio, not the main stage. It was a very intimate setting, though it was a but chilly on a very cold night outside. I was close enough to touch the actors, which I appreciated. I'd love to see another show there in the studio.
"Almost, Maine" was a complete delight. The cast were veteran performers of stage and screen with ample powers in the realms of pathos and hilarity. John Cariani, the lead actor and author of the play, has found both a voice and a spirit that evokes the part of Maine culture that is other than "Down East". Four actors portray nine vignettes that are, one way or another, love stories. It is both a light hearted and sensitive delight.
The theatre, Portland Stage, is a lovely contemporary, intimate theatre. With 286 seats, there are no bad ones, yet the amenities are first class, and the stage is fully equipped with rigging and fly space.
Wonderful theater. Productions are always well executed, and the acting caliber is high. Play selections are good, with a few misses in between, but that is true for all theaters. The theater space is welcoming, and in a central location in downtown Portland.
We've seen two plays here (during the 2016-2017 season) and loved both of them. I'm impressed by the quality of the acting. We took my parents to a show as well and they were raving about it to their friends.
We used to be season ticket holders, but the theatre became a little too edgy for our taste so now we go to the occasional show. The productions are good, the acting professional and the set design remarkable; it is just the choice of plays that could be off putting.
An upstairs theater. Elevator is available for anyone who needs it. There is a long season of shows from September to June. Theater capacity is 296 with a great rake to the seeding so view is nearly unobstructed. The concession stand has beer wine and port available pre-show and during intermission. The cookies are huge and the other sweets are equally yummy from local bakers and bakeries.
As a season ticket holder for several years, what more can I add as I keep coming back! The people are friendly, the location is great, the place is clean, and , with few exceptions, the performances are wonderful.
Portland State is worth your time, and support.
Terrific production...charming venue
My children take classes here. Really beautiful facility. Professional approach to theatre education for children, teens and those seeking to develop their craft. Wonderful staff all around, very friendly and clear.
Great theater. The play I saw tonight was amazing. A one person play. So well done. And the safety protocols just wonderful.
High quality performance art. Seasons usually have 7 shows and run from Sept to May. Each season covers plays of many genres but always with great talent and artistic coordination. Well worth the entertainment and supporting the local arts
The upstairs theatre on Forest Ave. Parking is available in nearby lots.
They have an elevator for those that choose not to walk the stairs. In the lobby you can buy wine and beer plus coffee, tea, soda and great cookies and other snacks before the show and during intermission.
Intimate theater with well raked seating so almost every seat has a great view. Handicap seating is in Row A or the first row. The have a regular season September to May and sometimes a co-production with Maine State Music Theater of Brunswick.
In Portland for a few days and decided to check out a show here. So glad I did; Nunsense was awesome! The theater is small and intimate, and the employees were all polite.
See arsenic and old lace here and the show was great. I was very entertained! Seating was great and they served some cookies and snacks and coffee at the bar before and during intermissions.
The best cast in years. Lively, stage presence, voice and timing was impeccable. The story of Scrooge has never beeb presented so well.
Small venue gives the best atmosphere! I am never disappointed with the performance of the actors. Wonderful place. Check it out!!
Awesome space to see professional theater. Portland Stage is a Maine Gem. For entusiasts it is a LORT D theatre ensurinf the quality of the acting and Anita Stewart has been at the helm as for over 20 years.
We saw "The Last Five Years" here, and it was superb! None of the seats are so far from the stage that you feel separated from the performance. We will be returning.
Great place to watch a show with a huge amount of seats and great shows. But for some reason the heating in the building is crazy and I was SUPER hot the whole time - a little weird.
This is a beautifully maintained space, organized by an impressive community team. They put on an amazing performance of Babette's Feast Winter 2018.
Always fabulous! Outstandimg acting, not a bad seat in the house, high-quality plays. You wouldn't find better theater in NY!
An outstanding venue peopled by skill, talent, and comittment to traditional theater as well as modernity. I love attending Portland Stage.
Portland's preeminent theater, don't miss it if you're in town.
Love the intimacy of this theater and have yet to see a bad performance. Always an interesting experience.
Performance ok, theatre very nice, access great, seating great. Not a bad seat in the house.
Always an excellent show. The theater tends to be warm so dress in layers.
No bad seat in the theater. Consistently awesome sets. Enjoyable acting.
Saw "It's a Wonderful Life" today. Great cast and show!! Love Portland Stage!
Everyone in the play we saw did very well. We were just hoping for a little bit more props to have been used and the seating area was a little cramped.
We saw Its a Wonderful Life tonight for my birthday, it was outstanding, great cast!!!
Great show! So glad they are open again!
Excellent theater, professional actors . " Sex and Other Disturbances " was funny and engaging. Pls support this wonderful theater.!😐 …
Love the theater- not a bad seat in the house. Excellent productions, especially Paper-maker- Bravo
An intimate theatre seating a bit over 200 with top notch productions including a mix of new and we'll loved.
We usually attend at least one play a season. It's a great theater no matter where you sit.
Small intimate venue. Comfortable. Professional. Saw "The last 5 years" it was wonderful.
No bad seats, very professional performance... parking is an issue...$25 is pretty steep
Top notch plays. Parking can be tricky but worth and hassle as they do a great job.
Small theater which presents great shows. Professional actors. Not a bad seat in the house.
