Reviews of Penn Live Arts/Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts
A great intimate theatre that has great sight lines in a comfortable setting. Room acoustics are good but as a sound engineer, I feel they are long overdue in updating their sound system which probably dates back before 2000. Updated sound would make this a perfect theatre.
The Soweto Gospel Choir performed tonight and they were magnificent as they celebrated their 20th Anniversary of performing together! Top class performance!
The Rock Dance School's Nutcracker was wonderful! This venue doesn't have any bad seats. The students were all awesome and very talented. We really enjoyed Clara on Friday night.
The seating is well designed with good lines of sight even from the last rows up top. The concession stand has reasonably priced and decent quality Pinot noir and Pinot grigio during intermission and if you bring their reusable plastic glass then you even get a discount.
From the exterior it's typical of the 60s/70s concrete construction that looks drab, but is well maintained inside.
A nice small theater. There's not a bad seat in the house.
Went to see the nutcracker. It was a wonderful play. Bought me back to my childhood. Beautiful performers. If you have the chance go see it.
Beautiful venue and good acoustics. Sitting in the center of row F provided perfect seats.
Saw the Soweto Gospel Choir, and they were amazing! I highly recommend seeing this performance!!
Annenberg Center For The Performing Arts is truly the best place to be! Penn live performances are simply the best, the students are truly perfecting their craft in a most delightful way!
Attractive concert venue with great acoustics. Seating is pretty good - comfortable but kind of close. Saw Jazz Violinist Regina Carter- 2nd row left center. AWESOME show! Had a glass of wine from the bar at a little side table before going in. Decently stocked bar. Great time!
This place is huge! If you are going to be doing any photography here make sure to bring a lens with very low aperture, I suggest a 1.4 to a 1.2. The venue is extremely dark. Here is a image I shot backstage below. Lots of grain due to backstage having no light.
Great show. Wonderful staff. Everyone was so accommodating. I am so glad to report you have leg room in your seat. I don't know about you, but being cramped takes the enjoyment out of the evening. After a while all I can think about is when is this going to be over so I can stand up.
Annenberg Center was a space that i saw managed with a high level of respect and professionalism. I was in a long line to get into a conversation featuring Tarana Burke and Spike Lee this weekend. It was so clutch that one of the attendants mentioned to go all the way around to Door 4. Trust me on this! I got all the way down to a row behind VIP/Reserved area way beyond where i saw some others who had been waiting for an hour or longer up in front of the line.
Penn Live Arts is amazing. They are hosting Pilobolus' 50th anniversary tour which is awesome.
The auditoriums are nice and the staff is extremely helpful with entry and guiding. But I think they barely have any bathrooms. Was here for a show and had to stand in queue for 15 minutes before I could use the loo during break time.
Absolutely amazing performance by The Jazz Orchestra Of Philadelphia along with the Artistic Director for Jazz Terrell Stafford. I highly recommend the public to treat themselves to an experience they'll never forget. This orchestra is a true treasure indeed.
I saw my friend perform here for the first time. The ushers were super friendly, and the lighting on the scrim was gorgeous.
Excellent place for top rated jazz shows. Need to have ID, proof of vaccination, Penn Pass and mask to enter. Get Penn Pass 1 day before your show online.
Great venue for modern dance. Every seat is a good one. Saw Momix dance group, they got a standing ovation.
Great venue for live music. Brandee Younger is amazing.
Wentt there for a jazz show. It was really good.
Like all venues the seats could be bigger, but sound was good and the space is small enough to feel intimate (for a fairly famous musician).
Nice space. We saw Jason Musson, great space.
This is not the biggest event building I have been to. but there is a little small charm about it that makes it cute and nice. Very nice architectural nice and polite staff five stars all the way keep up the good work during these difficult times with the covid-19 thank you very much once again for the great experience
Went to the Zellerbach Theatre for a Cecile McLorin Salvant concert. She was terrific, as were the other members of her quintet. About an hour and a half show, without an intermission. If you get a chance to see this jazz virtuoso perform, TAKE IT!
One of Philly's premier cultural venues, a place that feels even more exciting because it is located on the campus of one of the greatest universities in the nation.
I have been attending shows at Annenberg since I was a junior in college. Every seat in the house is a good one. This time, I was privileged to be present for an interview with the divine Patti Smith who followed up with a performance. It was an incredible evening.
beautiful venue. comfortable seats. everyone that worked there was extremely friendly and helpful.
Breathtaking venues for the amazing Dianne Reeves! Her concert was a great way to begin the holiday season.
If you haven't been inside of the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, you need to find an excuse to go inside. Not only is it visually appealing, it is an acoustical wonder. No matter your taste in music or art, if you are patient, something will be booked there to please your taste.
Saw Michael Londra and Celtic Fire.. fabulous! Love the surroundings of being in a smaller theater
We took special needs children there for the Children's Festival. It was phenomenal. The show kept our children engaged. The outside arts and crafts station were so much fun. The children worked on art projects as various young musicians played several genres of music in the background. It was truly a fun filled day for our children.
We saw Dorrance Dancers who were phenomenal in their Christmas show!!!
The Annenberg Center itself is perfect and the staff is so friendly
The jazz show was lively loved it ❤️
I love Annenberg! My friends and I have purchased season's subscriptions for the past 5+ years. There are a wide range of top rate performers (jazz, dance, plays, etc). The pricing is very reasonable and I am able to attend the performances of favorite artists as well as those who are new and interesting to me.
An event center for the masses!
The venue delivers on its promise of delivering engaging, intellectual, and cultural events for all interests.
The location is great - heart of UCity with lots of foot traffic. I went for a late show and was able to find close enough street parking, but that's more luck than anything else. I don't remember any garages in the area so in hindsight would recommend to leave early to allow for ample time to find parking.
Inside, it's split into multitude of event spaces, with the will call/ticket counter in the middle. It's a nice arrangement since you can pick up your ticket and then spin towards the right location without really getting lost since it's all a big circle. The employees are also helpful in guiding you to wherever you're headed.
I went for a live cultural show in the Zellerbach Theatre and there wasn't a bad seat in the house! It's stadium seating but there's a enough space between the stage and the chairs to not have to crane your neck in case you're in front and yet still see all the action without squinting your eyes if you're in the nosebleeds. There's plenty of doors to exit/enter which also helps in case you have to move around during the performance(s) allowing you to leave and come back discreetly without disturbing anyone. I found the seating to be comfortable enough and the space was overall clean but could use some sprucing. There was also ample walking room within the aisles and the rows which was nice since the show was full but didn't seem like we were packed like sardines.
It was nice to be able to enjoy the show given the comfortable/casual ambiance provided by the venue. Looking forward to more performances!
Theater type of atmosphere and that serves well. the sound quality is excellent and the staff is excellent. Saw a jazz concert there and I'll be gong back.
Downtown Philly too. Lots to do if you make a day of it.
The Dance Theatre of Harlem was exceptional, and the Annenberg was the perfect host
I went to see the play "Raisin In The Sun" given by the students of University Of Penn Performers of Arts Guild at The Annenberg Theater. They did a great job. I enjoyed the play and the artists very much. The only thing missing was the refreshments for purchase during intermissions.
Visiting no problem finding parking since after thanksgivings the parking garage across street was closed but street parking available. The theater was good note if your large, tall or knee issues don't get orchestra/balcony section
It's your standard issue 1980s vintage performance hall. All good seats. Acoustics are fine. Missing a personality but then you could say it doesn't interfer with whatever you're seeing.
This is a fine performing arts center attached to the UPenn campus in the University City neighborhood. It is in a safe well lighted area. There is a parking garage a block West on Walnut Street. Some metered street parking is also available. Depending on how comfortable you are in urban settings, the walk from the subway is not bad. The main performance space offers comfortable seating with good views from every seat. They have a fine lineup of dance troups, visiting theater groups and a few concerts. A warm lobby but with limited seating. Small bathrooms with long lines. Crowds are generally quiet and respectful. If you get your tickets at the box office the envelope may have a coupon for a discount at one of the local restaurants.
Nice venue, good sound. The hall can seat many people, but still feels intimate and cozy. Of course it is in University City, so that parking is not cheap.
The DANCE CELEBRATION series is a Winner!
I bought the Dance Celebration series subscription last year. I am not a great lover of dance but it was inexpensive. To my delight I enjoyed every show except 1. The subscription package came with all my tickets, parking discount and restaurants ideas. I highly recommend the series and the theater.
PRO: Now about the theater itself. The main theater is awesome. Its a medium size seating venue with a huge stage. I've sat front row and back row and had no problem seeing anything. The seats are comfortable and easy to get to. The lighting & sound system is worthy of Madison Square Garden. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Parking is just a block away with plenty of street parking. (Beware City of Phila Parking Authority - they are notorious for ticketing meter use even before time is up).
CONS: As its on an Ivy League campus I expected it to be nicer all around. Its rather bland, mostly concrete and the lobby has no seating. You won't even know you are on the UPENN campus as there is not a single sign. One time we sat in the front row and found the edge of the stage in sorry condition. The walls of the lobby are bare...they need to visit the Walnut Street Theater for some design ideas!!!
My wonderful girlfriend got tickets for here to see "Potted Potter". Not only was the show funny and delightful but the staff was fantastic and super clean. I recommend more couples have a date night here.
Never disappointed in performance here. Nice venue, great performers and I love that you can exchange season tickets for other concerts if your schedule or weather changes.
Just saw an awesome show. Dance theater of Harlem. Not a bad seat in the house. Beautiful modern dance with with a flair. A little James Brown. A little soul. A little gospel. Awesome dance!
Good service from staff and very comfortable theater. Great location in the city.
The space when you are booking belies it's intimate feel when you are there. A small enough black box that it can be full of possibilities without going over budget. The fact that it's a university Roadhouse means a lot of worthwhile options pass through it and you need to keep a watchful eye on the schedule
It was wonderful. Can't wait to go back for another show.
Wonderful & Amazing shows!! IF you have a love and passion for the arts... you'll will Absolutely love and appreciate this place. And don't forget to donate😀 …
Great performance arts center that do not forget about Latinos like many others do. A have enjoy many shows from all over the world here. Keep the good work.
Saw "is this a room" stunning work in the prince theater, the Zellerbach doesn't have a bad seat in the entire house. If there is something you want to see, go!
The theatre we were in was not a very live room. Not the best place to hear choral music, which made the concert by the King's Singers just a tad disappointing, if that's even possible.
New Breed Brass band, is smooth👍👍 …
Attending Science Leadership Academy's High School Graduation. Staff were supportive and caring. Many thanks to Gerry and his team members assisting those who needed assistance getting into and out of the facility.
Very. comfortable venue. Excellent sight lines and sound. One of the best concerts we've been to.
I attended the We Shall Overcome, A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther Luther Jr. Performance featuring Damien Sneed. The performance by the singers and musicians was beautiful!
Beautiful theater. We had a white coat ceremony here and there was no bad spot to sit.
Great show. Saw Circa Human 2.0.
See them if you can.
...NextMove! Dance is back at the Annenberg, and there are many other great entertainments offered; when you get tickets, make sure you also purchase a parking coupon for lot #30, just a short block away...
Love it this an excellent performance.
I work at Penn so I only come here for work events, but everything I've ever been to in here has been lovely. Very spacious so ideal for fairs.
Loved the ease of finding the venue. Ticketing was very comfortable. On call ticketing help were very kind, patient and extremely helpful.
Great shows but very little leg room between rows. The quality of the show overrides the discomfort of inadequate leg room.
Every seat is a good seat!
Very nice and clean theater. I was seated in the balcony and had no issues hearing or seeing.
Lionel Hampton Big Band Was Outstanding, however I hope the jazz lineup will be better this fall and Spring
