Reviews of Nuyorican Poets Cafe

Back to the 50's, the Beat Poets, Charlie Parker, and the legendary David Amram.
With brilliant Puerto Rican musicians and festive atmosphere - what could be better?
Jason Macey
This is perhaps the most renowned home of slam poetry out there. Its legendary open mics serve as an opportunity for all comers to test their skills at this uniquely American form of performance poetry.
Leyni R.
This place is such a vibe. I absolutely loved my time spent here listening to the talented artists. I also loved that there was a secluded spot, a balcony, for people to go up and view the performer/artist.
Jorge Luis Berríos
Great space to see and share poetry and drinks. The venue is a staple for the nuyorrican poets and slam poetry in general. I’m glad it continues to open its doors. I feel the environment is very supportive then somewhat competitive.
Ana Sofía Vázquez
Fantastic venue - loved the SLAM competition. All poets were extraordinary. Glad this place exists.
Shantez Marie Tolbut
It’s such a special little place of magic. It’s in a staple for the poet community. Always a good time. This is such a needed and sacred place. Go and support this Gem.

I plan to have my party here. I attended an event here in the past. I really enjoyed it. Thank you

I was here last night a highly recommend this place! I freaking love it! The music, the show the poems everything was amazing!
Anthony Vargas
Amazing place to watch live performances with deep roots. Tip- if you’re trying to preform here make sure you go 2-3 hours in advance to line up because I kid you not they only have 25 slots & the first 15 are always regulars

I had heard about the famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe for years and had always wanted to go. I visited Manhattan for the first time and made it a point to stop by. Maybe I came at the wrong time but it was not what I had expected. It was to start at 10pm and they didn't open the doors until about 10:12pm. We purchased our tickets online earlier that day. After standing outside in the cold we didn't have seats. Many people were standing up. I wasn't sure what the capacity was and wondered why we could pay to get in but not have seats. Even still I was a bit excited but we came on a night where one of the Host was trying out his guitar lessons and the order of poets didn't seem to be organized. I'll chalk it up to bad timing. Maybe I'll try again whenever I come to the city.

Wonderful experience. To hear the poetry from these artists is absolutely amazing. Must see performances

A landmark place in Loisaida #CommUnity

This is a NYC Gem that has stood the test of time. 35+years and still going. Spoken word artist here bare their souls for crowds of mostly tourists, for roughly $10 a pop. It's democracy at it's finest.

What a time to be alive. This past weekend was EVERYTHING. NYC owes me NADA!!! It feels so good to be alive. Be well. Do Well. LEVEL UP!!! Viva Nuyorican!💗 …

Performing at This Legendary Venue Awakens My Ancestral Spirit.. When Artists & Lovers of The Art Visit The NYC.. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a Must Attend!
Doug Reside
Very cool little slam poetry venue that has a very friendly vibe for showcasing the poets. The night we went it was packed with standing room crowds and more sitting on the floor. The show was supposed to start at 10 but they didn't even open the doors until then and things didn't teally start until 10.40 or so, so it was a late evening. Judges are appointed from the audience to judge two sets of 3 poets, each of whom do 2 poems each. The poets were preselected, so it's not like anyone can jump up and read a poem they just composed (so there is some basic level of quality). The music before and between sets is very loud (club like atmosphere).

Rome Neal's Banana Puddin Jazz is fantastic. Great music, great people and delicious banana puddin.
Krystin Christy
Wonderful place! They have a choice of different wines and beers. Very cool space, with a lot of different artistic and cultural events.
Shekeithra McLamb
Eric Crow Draven brought this place to its feet with a mix of extraordinary poets for his show Naked..best experience ever!
John Won
Cool vibe with diverse audience, great date night and poetry slam.
Matthew Reiser
Great space. Friendly staff. They have a active calendar.

This is a very nice performing arts space that hosts quality off Broadway shows, poetry and home of ROME'S famous Banana Pudding Jazz series.

My first time going and it was a great experience. It wasn't much of a cafe in the typical sense and the bar was small. But overall the atmosphere was very chill. The performances were all good. It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of a crowd and bear your soul. I'd definitely go again
Losiago
Great atmosphere. Drinks are reasonable
Sade Jerome
A very cool place to go watch cool performances. I enjoy the atmosphere every time I'm here. The staff are dope and they serve the perfect drinks for a chill night. If you're looking for a place to meet down to earth people, experience new things, or watch upcoming/aspiring artists perform and express themselves this is the place to go. Love it here.
Bridge
Amazing experience I thoroughly enjoyed myself, they energy was amazing and the talent was unmatched. I purchased the VIP ticket online and it was well worth it since the outside line was pretty long. Once inside I was able to get a good seat which is pretty awesome considering the place ended up getting super packed with standing room only.
Harold Rodriguez
An amazing hidden treasure. I've been going there for over 20 years. Even with all the success thru the years, it is still the same friendly feel that it has always been.
Khalil Favard
Great friendly staff, nice atmosphere for spoken word. Couldn't ask for anything else!
Dwayne Clarke
Very great place, where creative energies meet.

Went on a Wednesday night and had pretty low expectations to be honest. But the host and poets who took the stage (via lottery selection) were amazing. Taking off 1 star just because the drink selection is so small (a couple of wine and beer choices) and the chair spaces are extremely tight (and personal space is such a big deal to me) but if you're not a drinker and you're down with rush hour-subway style seating you'll likely love the place.
Sandra Hughes
I visited this iconic performance venue for the first time during my recent trip to NYC. During the Monday night open mic two dozen plus poets, singers and musicians - emerging as well as well-established artists, all talented - took the stage for 4 minutes each. The evening was by turns lively, inspiring, evocative, electric and edgy. La Bruja, our Mistress of Ceremonies, consistently delivered pitch perfect patter that included praise, encouragement and in the case of one ardent aging harmonica player admonishment for his tendency to want to hold a lovely young audience member captive. My Sweetie and I improvised a poetry/ flute duet that elicited praise from our formidable MC and the audience as well. The following evening our New York hostess who has lived in the East Village for nearly 3 decades joined us for a remarkable 21-member Latin jazz big band event. The evening included original compositions by band members as well as other musical works. The venue is extremely intimate, which enhances the enjoyment of the performances immensely. And ticket prices are amazingly affordable at the time of the writing of this review.

The crowd seems to be changing demographically since I first started attending this place but the talent is still A1 Steak Sauce. It's a great place to bring a date, just try to plan ahead by preparing to wait on line. Advanced tickets online get you in a little faster when they open their doors but waiting at least 45 mins before the door opens should get you decent seats as well. Warning: this place can get packed! So don't come late unless you don't mind trying to peek over everyone from the back or not getting in at all.
Andrew Stahelin
I loved every second of it the only thing I would say is I should definitely work on their seating situation but all in all I watched a lot of talented and Brilliant poets come up an absolutely kill it. I love the environment and the energy that you get from being in a crowd of people that are all appreciating the Fine Art of poetry. I definitely would like to go back again to see more people perform. Also definitely check to see if there are certain events going on so that you get the most out of your experience that's what I did and I was not disappointed at all.
Benjamin Bergers
A spoken word landmark that doesn't disappoint.
Tyler Pullen
The venue is okay; I went there for the open mic night and the musical audio quality was pretty terrible (exaggerated by the fact that most of the acts were rap songs with heavy beats). The performances themselves were also pretty bad, but I’m not taking that as a mark against the venue. It would likely be better on nights specified for actual poetry!
Chantel Kemp
Great space for poets!! Go there with something memorized!!
Adam Van Grover
An institution of the east village, there are always events here that range so dramatically - but any reason to come here is almost always a welcome chance to enjoy yourself. The place is actually kind of small, so do what you need to - buy tickets in advance, come early, wait in line, or resign yourself to standing near the door, the bar (which offers a small selection), or wherever as long as you're in earshot. I think the venue is most known for poetry and open-mic both of which are legendary; while there may be a mixed bag - this is where artists come to learn, build, and refine their craft so expect a range of experience, intensity and quality. Overall, a very interesting and authentic experience that's worth discovering.

Spoken word hole in the wall. I've heard about this place for years, and finally gotten the chance to visit. The best day to go is Friday nights for the poetry slam. Buying the VIP tickets online is highly recommended. If you do not do that, get there early. Between 8:30pm and 9pm. Doors open at 10 and that will guarantee you a seat, on either a chair or the floor. It's a small space and gets crowded fast. But the performances are well worth it.
Suz Sims-Fletcher
old skool NYC performance space.
while not convenient to public transport, worth your while to walk over. glad it is still with us.
Melanie Jean-Louis
The artists are very talented. The venue is small, but they have a great vibe. The bar did not have anything. Just like 3 kinds of drinks, it was very disappointing. They started very late as well.
Justin Spall
First time ever going to a poetry show. This place had some amazing poets the night I went. Absolutely fantastic! Just a little tip if you want to be able to sit in a seat make sure you arrive an hour early to be at the front of the line or buy the VIP tickets. Or if you don't mind sitting on a floor then don't worry about it!
Skye Hankins
I have been here twice to see two different acts. Most recently I saw "Diary of a Mad Social Worker" and I loved it. I bought one of my friends who is also a social worker and he said that he would recommend it. I forgot what was the first act I saw, but I remember it being good. Also, I have to say that their bathrooms are always really clean. That's hard to find in public these days. It's a nice cozy poet cafe and they sell alcohol which is always a plus with me. I love this place and plan on returning in the future. If you see anything on the schedule that catches your eye, check them out! It's worth a try! I would recommend arriving at least 20 - 30 minutes early because the space is small and it always fill up quickly.
Mel mar
I'm 31 I used to go quite a bit when I was around 18. If memory serves me right the music was always on point. The spoken word is awesome some people take themselves too seriously there but overall it's a great atmosphere. Beware sometimes there tends to be somewhat of a college crowd so if that's not your thing steer clear.
Zindy M
Convenient location with live entertainment. There is ample seating with the bar taking up a lot of space when you first walk through the doors. You can enjoy coffee and poetry or drinks and a open show with strong upcoming actors of New York. There is a second level that extends over the table seating on the main floor with an open scroll work metal railing providing full view of the stage below. This space is excellent to host an event, sit to see a show, listen to poetry and not feel as if you're rushed out. Patrons know to find a comfortable space and to arrive early for the best seating.
Kylthia Roberts
Traveled from South Jersey to see the one woman show 'Call Me Crazy: Diary of a Mad Black Social Worker'. It was quite the adventure by train and by uber. Small venue, but the show was outstanding, though the language could be rough. As a retired social worker, when I saw the title I had to be there and I even brought a friend. The staff were warm and welcoming. They serve drinks and the bathroom was clean, two big bonuses. When we left, there were a group of people waiting outside in the rain to get in for the Friday night poetry slam. This place has been around for many years. Hopefully it will remain for many more. Kudos to all involved.
Latrice Guess
My first time here but not my last. I expected to hear poetry but I did not expect to be at one of the greatest parties ever, listening to hip hop, raggae and pop music and dancing with total strangers as if we were good friends, laughing and singing tunes from TV shows from the 80's and 90's and laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. The spoken word and poetry was so good you wanted to hear it twice. This place is DOPE... can't wait til next Friday already.
Carol Mays-Davis
The most amazing spoken word experience. I loved being a judge for the famous Nuyorican poetry slam.
Quinton Marcellus
Great experience! Went there to see The Haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Got to meet the brilliant playwright. Will give 5 stars once they get their liquor license.
johnny diaz
I have been to this one of kind spot many times. The poets are amazing. The crowd becomes the judges. Grab a beer or some wine sit down get your finger snaps ready. I promise you will leave impressed and inspired.
Tatyana B
The atmosphere and energy is so contagiously comforting and positive. My experience was this past Friday and it’s worth the general admission price. I suggest you attend their Friday Night Poetry Slam hosted by Jive Poetic!
c Qiang
I love this place! The poets are all always really cool, as is the host. I came here with my friend Amodhya for her birthday surprise, and, as she is a poet herself, she had a really good time. We ordered two drinks and got to sit near the front. We also got to judge the poets ourselves and were given a board with numbers.
Fenda Louisaire
Attended a music show for local artists. The space was intimate. Sound system was good. There was a small bar the wild moderately priced refreshments. Had an overall nice experience.
Jacqueline Dania
If you've never been here, a great introduction to this place is the Latin Jazz night. The group was incredible and the place is so comfy and intimate, not to mention that the cover charge is a steal! Perfect evening!
Celeste Brown
I've only been to this venue once. My sister dragged me to this spot on a Friday night because she says that she loves it. I just thought it was OK.
For one, The place is pretty small and basic. Also, if your going on a weekend night be prepared for a very long line. According to my sister the price changes often depending on the show but it supposedly always stays under 20 bucks.
I personally had an issue with how the line was managed. Because after paying our entrance fee we entered the cafe to find that all seats were filled so only the option to stand was left. It would've been courteous to let the people still waiting on line outside know that they'd have to stand or sit on the floor before they paid the full amount and entered. But of course this courtesy wasn't given.
The poets were incredibly talented but the judging process could definitely be improved. Randomly selecting judges just doesn't seem fair to me-how do you know these are not friends of a performer?
There's was also a bar on premises but I didn't order anything so I cant speak on that topic. The crowd the night I went seemed to be made up of alot of skunky smelling twenty somethings-Or maybe it was just the section I was in? One girl was so high she could barely stand, walked right into me repeatedly until her friends (who definitely saw my patience was wearing very thin) finally sat her down on the floor.
I would return in the future but I would definitely inquire about what seating is left before paying my entrance fee because that information is definitely not volunteered.

I’m just visiting New York and figured I should do something the locals do. Also, who can pass up poetry? Well, I’m extremely happy I went. The boat was amazing, the poets - new and returning - were amazing, and the building itself fit the bill perfectly. Will definitely return next time I’m in NY.
Amber Oliver
I've been here a couple times and I always enjoy myself. The people who come here are genuinely interested in the acts that that are going up. Whether it is slam poetry, spoken word, a band, rapper or singer.
It's a cultural place that tries to promote unity and comfort within the audience, which I think is fabulous.
They have beer and wine, but most people are just here to enjoy the show, so refreshing!
Anybody can enjoy this place and get soemthing out of it. They even offer open mic nights where members of the audience can get up and show off.
This place gets crowded fast, so I reccomend buying VIP tickets or getting on line early!
Laniya Murray-Harrell
The vibe here was amazing !! .. so much talent .. the only issue was I waited over a hour and a half in line just to be able to sign up to reserve my spot on the line up. They need better organization of doing things . Timing seemed all over the place . But .. it was all worth it . I’d wait the hour and a half again honestly.
Mariah Jackson
Great experience!! I attended the all that hip hop open mic and it was so dope! Very talented people and VERY entertaining hosts. Everytime I visit NY I will be sure to catch an open mic night here!
Smevin Bravis
Best spoken word place I've ever visited. Mad intimate, they cram as many peeps in there as possible. Firey slam poets, not a single slouch in the bunch (there's usually one or two that's just kinda okay at events like this, but not here). Feels elite without being pretentious, and it drips with hip-hop. All love.
Rissa Di
The poetry was amazing, and i had the opportunity to be apart of judging the poets. They have a bar, that i did not get to try because it was soo crowded. Which is why im knocking out a star but overall the vibes were awesome. Very welcoming, and an attention grabber.
Franklin Bonilla
A small historic venue with different performances every other day. I went to a poetry slam on a Wednesday night, wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was blown away at the amount of talent that went up on stage.
Whether it's for music, theater, or poetry, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe is a must. Come with friends because you'll definitely want someone to discuss what you just saw.
Supreme
This was my 1st time attending a Spoken Word. Idk why I thought it would be like the movie Love Jones. I felt like it was more of a Rappers "Freestyle Friday" but on a Monday. And they loved the mic, ... yes we get ur on Instagram. I stayed less than an hour. I didnt hear much poetry just loud music & rappers. There was a female I really liked named Joi something. And I would like to return to recite my own Poetry tho. I did enjoy the different performances and understand that lyricism comes in all forms, it just wasnt quite what I had in mind. Place is very small. To be expected. This is NY. Very limited seating. I was told ppl line up early & sign up to perform there. Only 25 can sign up. 4min time slot. $8 to enter.
Sadi Maddox
I’m from CT.. coming to NY and being around such authentic talent really inspired me! This will definitely be my go to spot whenever I visit the city. The energy was amazing, the poets and artists were dope af. It was lit 🤟🏽 …
Jacori Zeigler
The host was great! So the poets were fun to watch and listen to. The vibes was so welcoming, can't wait to go back in another visit to New York
A TRUTH PRODUCTION
Nuyorican is an amazing place! The poetry is raw and very real. That is what Nuyorican is known for. HOWEVER! Due to changes in the neighborhood the crowd has definitely changed and the rawness has been watered down. The privilege some people carry is shown on the stage. Newbies to this place wouldn't be able to tell the difference but as someone who grew up in NY and has been to Nuyorican many many times, it's heartbreaking. I'll occasionally go hoping to see that one poet who will make it all worth it. The place is small so it gets packed (2 floors), you'll see the lines outside. The music is always on point and they also have a bar.
Jon Grabelle Herrmann
I'm biased because my wife and I had our second date at the Nuyorican in 2002. But having visited again in 2019, it's a special and unique place. Great music before the poetry begins.
Gerardo Aponte
I went with a group of friends, to see a friend performing on a Wednesday night. These places have live people that perform poetry.
They was a 8 dollars cover... but is worth it, over here you see so much talent that people from NY have, this is my first time going to a poetry club, so i did not know what to expect.
So they were almost 15 people performing, each participant had time to recite a poem; they were 3 judges that were scoring, each participant.
I think all people that did a poem, did a great job, but they only can choose the top 5 to pass to the next round. After this each winner that pass to the next round, had to do a new poem and the judge give then new score, then the winner, was the one that had more points from both rounds.
The winner won 10 US dollars and an opportunity to go to Friday match where the best of all perform will do new poem and then go to the national.
They sell all kind of alcohol in this cafe too.
Marie Martinez-Vazquez (RiRi West)
Let me start by saying that Mahogany Browne is a one of kind individual and a blessing!! She gets the crowd all happy and kicking It gets SUPER crowded. If you arrive somewhat early, make sure you get your drinks and go to the bathroom before the crowd comes in, because you won't have room to walk anywhere after that. The Friday Night Poetry Slam is where it's at! I'm not going to say more and spoil it. All I'm going to say is, go for it. Just go. Like so many others have said, go with an open mind and you won't be disappointed.
Jess
Really exceptional experience! This should go on the short list for anyone looking for something unique and culturally relevant to do in NYC.
Can't say enough good things about the poets that got up to perform and the special feature from the Nuyorican's mixmaster was phenomenal. Some truly talented people performing at this place
Lydia Santana
I visited this place twice and LOVED it each time. Brilliant poets recite their work here. It can get really crowded at times, but the crowd is not obnoxious or out of control. Also, performances start late.
Camille Ward
This venue has always introduced me to some of the most thought provoking poets. Some of poets are the best award winning poets of today.
I enjoy their events from the poetry slams, to the "therapy" poetry session held by poet Jaime Lee lewis.
Richard Molano
Honestly, I went their for my friend's dad. He was going to his dad's performance. I liked the show. It's unfortunate the place is so small. I didn't see the bartender when I just came in. The bouncer gave me a cup of water and later gave me and my friend a corona. Aside from that, I thought it was fine. I'm sure the bartender had a situation.
Padilla 411
On this night the "I am funnier than you" event was happening. Catered by the awesom CaSpanish crew. ((yumminess by tge way)) . It was good to see the comics. So funny, very entertaining too. The location is what i like to describe as intimate. Its feel good. The vibe iis right. Crowd close to stage and bar real close too. I enjoyed my time for sure.
Mary Noel
I love the history and culture of this place. If you have not been to the Nuyorican for a poetry slam, you must add it to your list. The talent that can be found here will blow you away. It is most definitely crowded on Fridays, but I always bring visiting friends here and they always speak of it as a highlight of their trip to the city.
Autumn Reign
This was one of the things I wanted to do before the end of 2014; an item on my life list. I was there this past Friday, Nov 21st, what an amazing experience to see so many people from around the world and country. Then to have amazing poets as diverse as their culture speak life into an audience of seekers. Mahogany Browne tore the house down with her satire and comedy… I loved it and I thank the owners and visionaries for keeping this venue alive. Peace, Prosperity and Blessings see you in APRIL 2015. But the ambulance was just great I just like I just like it it's just relax and it's just nice I know it's going to be good so I will have the dates now and times and as soon as I go I will let Google Maps know for sure thanks for the information to on the address I need directions Rev
Alexian Taymer
This place saved us on a freezing winter afternoon. We stopped in for a smoothie and a huge platter of rice, beans and stew from the hot bar. There's a shared table and some counter seats. No frills but delectable.
Henny LeBeau
Been meaning to come to the cafe for a while and my gf took me on my birthday. What a dxpe surprise. This spot was so chill and had a beyond dxpe open mic night. I'm definitely coming back.
John
A great place to experience spoken word in NYC. THe Nuyorican also has shows open mic Mondays and a great bar. I think you can bring in your own food if Im not mistaken, Get there early if you want to get a seat. There is also a balcony to check out the show from above. Just dont be a pretentious jerk when you get there it's poetry enjoy it.
Katja Philipp
What a great riot! Political, sassy, honest poetry and expression slamming, what a great crowd and such a New York experience. Loved every minute of the poetry slam last night!
Vee Marie “The Victorious One” Vargas
It's pretty dope on a Monday night wish they had food lol but the entertainment is awesome outside and inside during performance hours the real feel of hip hop is gonna enter this era the Lord heard my prayers
Tim Hand
Small and intimate, and great acoustics. We saw the Bronx Conexión here and want disappointed. Can't comment on drink prices, we got ours for free with the ticket!
Nefertiti P. Arthur
I attended the Words Matter Poetry Slam hosted by the 2018 Downtown Urban Arts Festival at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe last Saturday. The staff was friendly, helpful and professional. And, the Poets were great!
Tyrone Leader
This place is great for artists to show off their talent. If you like laid back, down to earth vibes, this is the spot. Love this place. I highly recommend it.
Shawn Dominique
Dope vibe. Very talented host. Wonderful crowd. My wife and I will be back next 3rd saturday of the month (hip hop poetry open mic)
Chandler Baird
This place is the spot hand down in all of NYC. Even if you're here for a night, you must come to Nuyorican Poets Cafe. They play the best music and everyone is super chill here.
Barbara McClover
Wonderful, great staff, Rome Neal's banana pudding is the Best. The Film of the career of Mr Woodie King Jr brought back such great memories, can't wait to purchase the DVD
Alisann Durham
Excellent show the had showing The haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda the play is until June 16th you must see it very educational I would go again.
Jacqueline Delgado
Nice ambience great staff!
Nilsa S
The wait outside was long, enter at 10:30pm. It stated entrance at 10pm, overcrowded. The show it self was a 5 star, enjoyed it very much.
Thomas Connor
The place I go to when I need to get some stuff off my chest
Dez GDNY (GraphicDesignNY)
Part of the history of New York City, specifically the LES (Lower East Side). They don't just do shows but also sponsor event designed to help artists learn more about funding and business management. A hidden gem the city cannot afford to lose to developers and gentrification.
Eury Payano
It is a great event space. Reasonable prices for drinks.
Christina Walrond
My first time at a Poet's cafe and it was a great atmosphere, everyone was very friendly and inviting. Poets did an awesome job, I would go again.
Tiffany Bonnard
The energy was amazing in the place. The jazz was breathtaking and everyone was very friendly. It was a truly magical night.
Janice Pemberton
I am a frequent attendee of Nuyo's Friday night slam and open mic. It never disappoints. Last night, Carlos Andre's Gomez performed live for the first time in months. (He is a new daddy to baby Gabriel and old dad to two year old Grace. Lucky kids!) His words are life changing, as usual. And the recently returning Nuyo National Poetry Slam team from Chicago allowed the audience to be a member of their family for about an hour. What a gift! Radi and Lindsey brought their lesbian, Black girl magic squared with their writings, CJ and Paragraph, their realness. It was an impressive show enjoyed by all. Stop by next Friday. It WILL change your life!

The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is to poetry what The Apollo Theater is to Music. A place that cultivates and celebrates an art form. It is also a place that has a competitive approach to the culture it represents much like The Apollo. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe is one of the few places in New York that still feels like New York.
I came to NPC to watch my friend compete in the weekly poetry slam that is held every Wednesday. Honestly, I was just there to watch a friend in his first appearance at NPC. What started off as an effort to support a friend quickly turned into an experience I would not forget. Before the first Poem was read I became immersed in the experience that is NPC. The show began with the host "Jive Poetic" warming the crowd up with his mix of jokes and an explanation of how the night's proceedings would go. Mr Jive Poetic definitely has a comedic side because I was laughing the whole time he was on the stage. Following his humorous explanation of the poetry slam rules the competition began.
Every Poet I saw on that stage brought something of value to the microphone. For some it was relatable content and for others it was expertly written and delivered poetry. Some performances were excellent, none were less than entertaining. The subject matter ranged from familial issues to relationships to matters of a political nature. Much of what I heard resonated with me on a personal level or at least gave me a glimpse of someone else's reality. This isn't Haikus or abstract poetry. This is real people sharing a piece of themselves on the stage. At NPC the crowd participation adds an element of authenticity that is invaluable to the experience. The poetry slam is judged by three volunteers in the crowd. The cheering (or lack thereof) is a major influence in the scores the poets receive.
Based on my first experience NPC deserves a perfect 5 star rating. For only $8 there's not a more entertaining and stimulating experience to be had in New York City. The talent, crowd interaction and overall energy in this place are priceless. NPC is preserving an underrepresented art form that is relatable to anyone and for that it should be a protected city landmark. I will be back often.
Constance Grayson
The Dj was the best!!! Best variety on music in the whole city...atmosphere was laid back the host was extremely funny the poets were clever with strong deliveries.
David Heller
Saw an asl poetry slam and it was awesome. Not sure if it always gets as crowded as it was but I'd definitely get there earlier if I go to an event there again.
Jada Bodley
Love, Love, Love this place!! Definitely the summer hangout. Although, this place gets rather crowded it is worth the stand. Talented artists, amazing DJ, hilarious MC.
Chris Turnier
Open mic every third Saturday is very fun. The live band is sick. It’s a dope show every time.
Vincent Greene
The poets performing in the poetry slam were unabashedly revealing moreso they were performing in an intimate setting that allows them to get up close and personal with the audience.
Stephen Elliot
Went here for an event. Liked the space, but feel like the event was a bit too delayed and disorganized. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe I just was picky. I'd go back again and see how it is next time.
Angela Brinkman
Love this venue.
Janish W
I don't know if I'm a good judge or not but I had fun and did my best giving "judgemental" critique on poets pouring their life blood on to stage at the nuyorican where Def jam royalty cut their teeth.
Roxy Maldonado
It is very tiny. I appreciate the history and I think it would be worth to invest in updates that would make it more spacious and more efficient without taking away from the authentic bohemian feel and look of the place as it is.
Ajua Kouadio
The Nuyorican is a piece of NYC history. Go on Tuesday nights for the open mic and laugh, cry, think, protest, or whatever else people's art makes you want to do. Sign up and line up early and you can get on the mic too if you want. The hosts nightly are friendly and social. Also, everyone in there is ridiculously talented!
Queenie's New York Lotto
Great vibes, real talent, not too pricey and cool decor.
I would definitely recommend this cafe to someone who loves poetry and cool vibe.

The poets were amazing and the way they reorganized the seating and placement of stage was great for everyone to see the performers.
Joseph Rutledge
A place for intimate expression for one's soul via the spoken word.... A place to be if you want raw immersion and witness to the truth that there's life below the towers of glass and steel...
Laura Kim
Spoken word is a refreshing break from the usual entertainment, with the tone of your visit changing with each performer. Grab a beer and watch someone bare their soul on the intimate stage.
