Reviews of Walking Shadow Theatre Co
Walking Shadow is my favorite local theatre company. They produce thoughtful, eclectic works that stay with me for weeks -- sometimes years. Through attending their shows and puzzles, I've gotten to know the work of so many incredibly talented local actors and designers. Always inspiring, occasionally challenging, sometimes life-changing. Always looking forward to the next chance to participate.
I attended Reboot (which was online via zoom) and Cabal (in person) and both were amazing. Reboot was so much more engaging, interactive, and immersive than I would have imagined online theater could be. Cabal had phenomenal sets and integrated the audience so well into the show. Both had fun and thought provoking premises. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to support innovative local theater and/or has an interest in puzzles and escape rooms! I'm also very appreciative of the strict covid precautions they keep in place--they create a safe and inclusive space!
Walking Shadow has been one of my favorite Twin Cities theatre companies for more than a decade. I saw my first Walking Shadow show in 2007 and joined the board in 2020. The artists leading this company carry a depth of passion and talent that can be felt deeply in all their work. If you're in the Twin Cities, keep an eye out for this company's work and make seeing it a priority. If you're not in the Twin Cities, join the mailing list anyway, because Walking Shadow is also making some really amazing virtual theatre that completely changed my mind about what's possible for this art form.
I brought my exchange student with me to see Cabal and we had such a fantastic evening! Before the show I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. The show felt a bit like murder mystery meets escape room- but in the best way. The show held our intrigue and felt completely safe while we got to interact with the story. We walked out saying, “wow that was really cool!” I would absolutely recommend this show, especially of you want to impress a date 😉. Pro tip- be early!
Walking Shadow creates beautiful magic onstage, both in the storytelling and in the production value.
Cabal, in particular, is so remarkably designed and crafted. It’s one of the most special shows I’ve seen. AND it’s a play with puzzles, so as an audience you get to interact in a fully immersive experience.
Had a very good time at their Cabal show! It was fun, the puzzles were an appropriate level of difficulty, and they did a great job of making groups of strangers work together to solve puzzles without creating awkward or forced situations. Special thank you for requiring masks and shots, so it could be safe and comfortable for those of us who still take the pandemic seriously.
Walking Shadow Theatre Company’s show Cabal is truly one of my all time favorite theatrical experiences I’ve had in the Twin Cities. From the intricate set and props to the wonderful cast, puzzles, and storytelling - it is a one of kind gem. I look forward to supporting Walking Shadow in the future and can’t wait to see what’s next!
This is a great little theatre company. I've seen at least 10 of their shows and while I haven't loved every one, they are more consistenly generating interesting, thought-provoking pieces than any other company I've found in Minneapolis. And the occasional stand-out masterpiece keeps me coming back for every show I can manage. Their productions of The Whale and 21 Extremely Bad Breakups were two of the best theater experiences I've ever had (for very different reasons) and their Fringe production of William Shakespeare's Land of the Dead will always be one of the funniest, most unexpected theatre experiences of my life.
Walking Shadow is a wonderful theater company and an asset to the Twin Cities Arts Community. Their shows are consistently thought-provoking, creative, and engaging, and we make a point to see as many of their shows as we are able. If you have the opportunity, take the time to see their current production, whatever it may be. You won't be disappointed!
Walking Shadow is some excellent theatre, go see Cabal while it is up. This is a truly innovative piece of theatre mixed with easily the best escape room style event I have ever participated in. Bring your pile of best friends and enjoy!
I always enjoy going to walking shadow shows. Many unforgettable experiences - in particular the stunning imagery of Sleepy Hollow and Carrie Nation in Hatchet Lady. I look forward to more performances from this staple of the Mn theater scene
Saw Cabal a few months ago on a trip to MSP and it was stunning- an immersive, interactive theater performance with a small group in a brilliantly designed space. Wished I lived closer and could visit more often. Feels like the kind of experience that would reward repeat performances.
Walking Shadow shows are consistently amazing. Engaging, thoughtful, tight pacing, and a joy to behold. Minneapolis is damn lucky to have this world class theater company call the Twin Cities its home.
My group had a wonderful time at Cabal!! It was interactive, challenging but doable puzzles and a great story performed by Chuck Vodacek and Laila Sahir! I would highly recommend all to enjoy this performance while you can! As for me, I’ll be following this company much more and can’t wait to see future performances!
Walking Shadow is the only theatre in town that I don't even need to know *what* show they are doing to get excited about seeing it.
Every single production they handle, whether an Original or one that has already been around for quite some time, they approach each new show with an intentionality and attention to detail that allows the audience to know what they are about to watch will undoubtedly be unlike anything they've seen before, or will ever see again.
Walking Shadow's productions are consistently moving, thought provoking, timely, and technically excellent. I especially love their plays with puzzles, like Cabal, Reboot, 1926 Pleasant.
This is the go to theater company for when you want an encounter with the arts that you’ll think about for years afterward, and that might even change your life. The Cabal immersive theater experience is mind blowing, worth every penny, and makes you wonder why more theater isn’t like this!
Cabal was the most amazing experience! I have been to their theater shows and really enjoy them, but Cabal was my first puzzle/theater/escape room and my friends all thought it was beautiful!
Hands down some of the most inventive, daring theatre in the Twin Cities. I was blown away by CABAL when I saw it - I expected a bunch of puzzles strung together with a loose narrative, I didn't expect a genuinely moving otherworldly immersion. I still think about it now several years later.
Strong storytelling in Beowulf, top teir immersive theater in Cabal. I've seen Sleep No More in NYC and Cabal is more intimate, interactive, heartfelt.
As a lover of puzzle rooms and theater, this was a match made in heaven. Amazing sets, fun puzzles, awesome experience. If they're putting on a show, I'll be there and you should be to.
Walking Shadow is a great company. Their current show, Cabal, is one of the best interactive theater experiences I've ever had. David Pisa's puzzles are accessible to all, creative, and completely in line with John Heimbuch 's amazing script!
Support this company, and see whatever their current work is. You may be challenged in your ideas; you won't be disappointed!
This company is known for its attention to detail and this show is no exception! I loved the space and the games and the journey. Everything was so well executed.
This outfit does such joyful, smart, eccentric theater, whether in a traditional space or in more interactive formats. Always excited to see what they are doing next.
For the eight years that we lived in Minneapolis, we routinely prioritized making Walking Shadow's productions a part of our lives. They are consistently excellent with expertly cast and produced performances. We most appreciated the contemporary and thought-provoking shows that they staged--some conceived from the ground up and others licensed for public performance. Never shy to push against the expectations of the craft, Walking Shadow shows their versatility every season, navigation fluidly between genres and themes. Despite such diversity in their approaches, you always get a sense of the underlying vision of the company. They entertain and compel audiences to pay attention to a wide range of expressions of the human condition. They know who they are, and you should get to know them.
Saw Cabal, and whoa! The sets were gorgeous, the puzzles were fun, the play was interactive, and well-acted. Everyone left with smiles on their masked faces. Bravo!
A hidden gem of the Minneapolis theater scene! I've seen many of their plays and never been disappointed!
I forgot the name of the show but I saw a show about Oscar Wilde that blew me away. Also, the Dracula show that takes place after the events of Bram Stoker's Dracula was so completely creative.
This theatre company really cares about the audience experience. They put quality into every performance. If you don't go to one of their shows, I believe you are missing out on a truly great live experience.
The finest "smaller theatre company" in the Twin Cities. Their selections of challenging and entertaining material coupled with innovative stagings and inclusive, fluid casting choices all combine to make Walking Shadow far exceed their limited means. Who knows what heights they might achieve with added financial support? Think of making a donation to this phenomenal company. We need them around for many years to come!
the quality and range of their productions is consistently high. Cabal in particular showed that there's a surprising amount of emotional life in the escape room genre. if you can catch one of their shows, do.
Walking Shadow is an impressive company with bold vision and impressive attention to detail. Cabal was one of the most unique and amazing theater experiences.
Walking Shadow is a company made up of thoughtful theatre-makers who produce shows that challenge, entertain and inspire. Love their work!
A remarkable, highly flexible, always provoking company. Great stuff! Loved their productions of Dracula, Marie Antoinette, and Beowulf, look forward to many more.
Remarkable original works and adaptations; always something different and refreshing
Independent, high quality theatre, with the kind of talented artists and bold story-telling that the Minneapolis theatre scene has become known for.
Just saw Cabal — really well done with a few legit ‘wow’ moments. Highly recommend!!
This theater company is a gem. I attended a performance recently while visiting from out of town and it turned out to be a great choice.
One of my favorite theater companies, period. Innovative, entertaining work excellently executed.
If you like independent live theatre, there's not a better company in Minnesota.
Fantastic (often funny and dark) shows. Also, a joy to work with!
The finest small theater company in this city, and that's saying a lot.
