Reviews of Hawaii Theatre
We recently visited this theater for the first event allowed after two years of the COVID pandemic, and wow, this theater is absolutely amazing. I really like the art and detail that has gone into designing this historic theater. The neon outside is awesome and there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. To make things better, the entire staff is super friendly and always looking to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. Another super plus, this place is very clean.
My bestie saw The Hundred Food Journey. It was so wonderful in this amazing venue! All the history and majesty of a time before the Internet.
In November 2006, our tour group was invited to an afternoon of German and Hawaiian folk music at the Hawaii Theater.
During the event, Siegrid & Roy unexpectedly appeared in the upper tiers. They were friends of Heino. The event lasted a few minutes. All visitors stood up and marveled. Seriously injured by his Tigers in 2003, Roy gave a short speech. After that the event continued.
Nicely renovated historic theater. Loge seating provided excellent views. Conveniently located for pre-show Chinatown dining.
I highly recommend this gem to all visitors. They have great shows. The theater is so beautiful ❤️ you have to go see this beauty in person. Go online to find out the show time. There are many good restaurants nearby. Enjoy!
I saw a great play here. The theater needs a little updating but other than that it was good.
Beautifully restored historic theater is now used for a variety of performances. We found free street parking nearby for an evening concert. Lots of good restaurants nearby for dinner before the show.
Shockingly gorgeous. Amazing staff. Thank you for existing!
Went to see Jefferson Starship.
It's been awhile since the last time I visited this beautiful and nostalgic theater. Love the inside and the nice bright neon sign outside BUT
The surrounding area is just dirty and scary. People from here knows what I mean.
Went to see a comedy routine here. The theater was very clean and staff seemed alright. There is no parking lot on premises, but lots of other parking lots nearby or free street parking (King Street) if you go early and don't mind a short walk.
The only shortcoming of the theater would be that the seats would be a little uncomfortable for taller people. I'm 5'11" and the seats my knees were just about touching the seat in front of me. I had to "manspread" a little to be comfortable. If you're comfortable on a Hawaiian Airlines plane, you should be alright. Lol!
Beautiful venue, great sound,comfortable seating.
Nice theater, with traditional (old fashioned) decor and rather uncomfortable seats with barely enough leg room for average sized humans. Good acoustics, very nice staff!
Whatever you're going to see, get there early so you can get to the concession as quick as possible. If you're tall or big the seats are a TIGHT fit so buy isle seats or up deck seats mext to pillars so you can stand. I'm 6'1 and I banged and cut my shin sitting down. The people in front grimaced in reaction to my pain.
Absolutely stunning and gorgeous inside and out. The font is classic and gives that nostalgic feeling. It's beautiful inside. If you get the opportunity to get tickets, definitely go to this amazing and historical site. Enjoy
The theater is absolutely gorgeous. The ushers were incredibly helpful and efficient. Because we have a medium size truck, the parking garage was a nightmare, however. That's okay, we still had a wonderful time.
A classic theatre that hosts comedy shows, plays, and other small scale shows. Very clean but there's no eating or drinking allowed in the main theater.
My first time seeing a show at the historical Hawaii Theatre. Beautifully decorated interior and the lighting was phenomenal. Purchasing tickets online was easy. Would’ve been nice if the tickets could be downloaded to the Apple wallet. But we had no issues with check in by showing a photo of our tickets.
Great atmosphere and you can feel and smell the history in the place. Literally, you can smell an old building smell. It’s like smelling old books.
We enjoyed how ornate the inside and outside of the building looked. We bought tickets online, so check-in was fast and easy. The hallways are small, so they will become congested quite easily. The auditorium is beautifully designed, but the seats are narrow. We were expecting everything to be more spacious, but it is what it is. Despite how nice the building was designed, the concession bars were basic and seemed almost makeshift. The products were hastily displayed on the shelves with the lighting strips glaring at you. If I'm paying $5 for a bottle of water, I expect the concession bar to look good.
Needs updating, decor is dusty, but great venue for concerts, comedy, etc. Parking somewhat of a hassle if you park in the lot across the street. FYI: it dosen't open until 7:00 pm, which means a long line outside that blocks all traffic in the intersection. Parking pro is that you can pay ahead of time online so you don't have to wait in a long line after the show.
A small 90 year old theatre in China Town. The acoustics we're good and the theatre is small enough that there are no bad seats. There are ushers to help you find your seats. The theatre sells drinks and snacks before the show and during intermission. Unfortunately they have not started using covered glasses so you can not take your drink with you for the show.
Beautiful classic theater. It's a throwback in time. Went to see the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's live. It was a great concert, we had a great time.
A gorgeous space surrounded by great restaurants. Thoroughly enjoyed the show I decided to attend with short notice.
First time visiting for us. Watched a Christmas show. This is a beautiful building and the performance was very nice, too. We'll be back.
Went to Hawaii Theater for Kalani Pe'a concert on 12/23/2022. Kalani Pe'a was AWESOME. Luv Natalie Kama'u & luv luv luv Mele Apana. The Docents was very helpful & friendly all except 1, she was an Asian woman around late 60's or early 70's with black hair, she was the Grinch that stole Christmas. 1st she told me no video taking which I was taking still pictures which I understood was fine, 4 times. Then she told me to control my 4 yr old niece which was dancing in front of me when Kalani Pe'a said to stand and dance, twice I was waiting for her to tell me a 3rd time cause I was going to let her have it. Because 7 rows in the front of my family was to gay gentlemen that was drunk that was yelling & dancing then later went up on the stage & security had to get them down WTH please educate that docent or don't serve alcohol😠
Beautiful facility. We saw the orchestra play with the Muppet Christmas movie. They played beautifully and we had a wonderful time.
I am so happy this venue exists here in Oahu! Beautiful theater in its own right with great sight lines that hosts a variety of programming. Nearby parking garages make driving easy and there are a ton of places nearby to eat or drink.
There is nothing like seeing a movie in such a beautiful place! If you're able to, go!
My bestie saw The Hundred Food Journey. It was so wonderful in this amazing venue! All the history and majesty of a time before the Internet.
The most beautiful theater on the island!
Went to see the Makaha Sons Concert.. They still sound great.. Hawaii Theatre is 100 yrs old but still great place to see shows & concerts..
A beautiful venue that makes you feel like ur part of the show. There are no bad seats, and up top is just fine.
great venue with a nice view from every seat in the house. very nice staff and always clean. The acoustics are very good here no matter the venue.
A solid venue for solid performances, the Hawaii Theatre does not disappoint. It always leaves me mildly in awe seeing contemporary productions in such a vintage setting! It has a grand feel, but still maintains a cozy vibe.
Such a beautiful venue, excellent variety of top-quality performers and the theater director Mr. Dunn is the best caretaker the theater could ask for.
I've been here in years past, but was honored to see the Royal Hawaiian Band in their first show after Covid. It was great to see, and there were many great performers. Ushers were great. There was beer and a few non-alcoholic options upstairs.
Unfortunately, people kept moving in and out during each piece, which creaked the floorboards terribly each time. Cellphones rang and rang. Children cried. People kept having their cameras unexpectedly flash or strobe. It was a bit nuts. Maybe just post-Covid wildness?
Anyway, it was good to be back, and some of the music was moving.
Beautiful theater! Corinthian pillars surround the stage, there's a mural above the stage, and a domed ceiling provide a beautiful concert atmosphere. The seats seem old and creaky, but the padding is thick and accommodating.
A beautifully restored landmark. It has been an honor and joy to have been performing on the Hawaii Theatre stage. They don't make theatres like this anymore.
Theater was beautiful and Nurse Blake was awesome!
Beautiful theater in downtown Honolulu, Oahu. It was an honor to perform and participate in this beautiful setting. It is definitely worth visiting or seeing a show or performance here.
Always a very special venue! Every visit has been awesome along with the awesome employees! Thank you for all you do!
Beautiful old theater celebrating its one hundredth anniversary this year.
Love this theatre! So much history. Every seat is a great seat too!
The show was great. Service at the door was great. Concession stand was pathetically slow. Parking in Marks garage while prepaid, was not a good idea. Took an hour to get out of there afterward.
I saw Tom Segura perform there just before NYE. He had a great set. The sound was extremely clear. The only down side is that it it's an extremely old theatre, and the seats have no leg room. I'm 6'4, and it wasn't a comfortable seat. Reminds me of an airplane.
The concert was awesome. Just the experience being in an old theater was nice.
The theatre is absolutely beautiful, decent seats to see most of the stage. Maybe it was because it was one of the first performances since things started reopening but NO ONE was ready for how busy it was. I certainly wasn't. We got there about 15 min early and the line was already wrapping around the block and took over 20 min from where we were. There were tons of people behind us also. They had to hold the house for 15min. The line did move pretty fast, there were just a lot of people trying to get in one area.
Bathrooms, same story. I got in line to stamp my parking and get a water (since the fountains were turned off, Covid) and spent the entire intermission doing so, even late for the first number. They had 4 people and only 2 computers processing drinks and passes for 1,400 tickets!! I even had cash since I hoped it would be easier but the computers were having problems and everything was being processed there making it take forever. A positive note was everyone was very nice and friendly.
Next time I will be prepared, but I certainly hope the theater can be better prepared as well. I've been in plenty of theaters this size and bigger. While there are often problems if you wait till the last min, this was a combination of not organized, and possibly understaffed for the number of tickets sold.
The performance was beautiful! It was so amazing to see live dance again.
First time to watch a performance. Beautiful theater, its been restored well. Cant wait to watch more performances there
Korean dance program was delightful. Beautiful old theater!
The Hawaii Theatre is a historically rich, architecturally magnificent place to see! The only down side to this place is that the seats are not made for Hawaiian hula hips and felt as snug as the airline bulkhead row.
Great theater! We watched Shrek the musical and sat in the loges. View was perfect! Althought, the prices for water ($5) and coffee ($4 a tiny cup) was outrageous!!
Very nice theater, great staff, excellent orchestra!
Gorgeous theater, great acoustics and comfortable seats.
Went to see Tusk a Fleetwood Mac tribute band.
They were excellent.
Close your eyes and you hear Stevie Nicks.
The facility is regal and reminds me of my childhood when we would watch movies on Saturday mornings.
The most amazing venue in Honolulu. If you have a chance to see any performance here, GO!
Historic Chinatown has many great things about this area, the old Hawaii Theatre being no exception.
Sat in nosebleed section, but lots of leg room & sight lines were great!
Lovely theater for live performance
Cute venue but only 1 bar...
Nice venue. Plenty of parking. Upstairs area had a lounge with Items to view. Nice staff and snack service. Had a stiff drink. Show was great. Very dirty carpets kind of made the experience a bit dingy. That’s the only knock.
Nice & cozy setting. Great view from balcony seats. Seats are narrow, though.
Beautiful, classic old time theater. I'm so happy they restored it to it's former glory instead of tearing it down like they did to the rest of old Honolulu Theaters. Great acoustics, every seat is a great seat
Wonderful historic theater! We were fortunate enough to catch the spring concert while we were on Oahu and it was a lovely evening. Special guests Streetlight Cadence made it even more fun. This is a special gem that I am glad has been restored and functioning as a lively venue for the performing arts. Well worth your effort to catch a show there.
Friendly staff, good deal on tickets. I loved the Studio Ghibli themed week! Theater was large and comfy. Just the right volume too. But the ticket booth closes as soon as the movie starts so if you're a little late then you miss out
Competed in the Ikaika Classic (my first show) in this theater. Loved the ambiance and the lighting.
They encourage you to buy $12 well cocktails via presale online and don’t disclose that you can’t bring them inside the theatre for the show. You have to stand there and chug your drink in the foyer before your show begins. Absolutely inconsiderate and feels like a total money grab. Let people know!
Amazing theater with classic Vaudevillian Style. Sweeping outside marquee, beautiful murals frame a large open stage, arched Loge and tiered balcony overlook a delta-esq floor seating arrangement. Embroidered velvet seats, comfortable and beautiful. Great sound, not a bad seat in this classic, quaint (RECENTLY RENOVATED) theater. You cannot bring beverages into the theater- though nice drinking room is minutes away from your seat, and the main theater room.
Fun place to go but don't want to try to get some drinks while you're there. It was so disorganized.
What a beautiful theater. Saw a movie there with cast Q&A. Sound was a little echoey.
We had a great time seeing Patton Oswalt here. We unfortunately missed the first few minutes of the show because an usher came over to tell me to not take a picture. Before the show started we were told by the president of the theatre that non-flash photos (what I had taken) were allowed. The usher unnecessarily interrupted the show for us the first time, and then came back a few minutes later to tell me that non-flash photos were okay, which I already knew. It's a really pretty historic theatre and it was a nice experience, just kind of a bummer to have it unnecessarily interrupted like that.
My wife, son and I were visiting from the Mainland and decided to cap off our vacation by supporting and watching the ALLEGIANCE show on the first performance on March 28, 2019. The theater appears well preserved and cared for. However, except for the ticket scanner at the door who directed us to go upstairs, no one was at the doors of the auditorium to direct traffic and few people were inside the auditorium to direct people to their seats. We had never been to this theater before, so we were stumbling around looking for the exit to the street after the show. A lady saw us and nearly yelled at us demanding where we were going. Probably not coming back.
Nice facility. Great staff. Didn't notice a concession stand but if they served alcohol on an adult night that would be perfect but lots of other places around the area to get your drink on before your show.
Very special theatre. This is where you go get a whiff of the regal past and connect with old Hawaii.
Beautiful, cozy, high-class, and historical arts & theatre venue with fairly large auditorium for events such as plays and Beach Boy concerts. High-end VIP events and back rooms with menus prepared by well-trained chefs from all around the world!
Seating could use renovation very cramped and small. Still magnificent ceilings. Parked about 1/2 block away in a garage. Though there is metered street parking. The hostesses/event workers could have been friendlier.
This is a Beautiful venue for Music and Entertainment. Located in the Chinatown/Entertainment district of Honolulu. We have attended a few shows here and thoroughly enjoy the venue. It would be better if you could buy seats on the main level as you will be able to have one of the better views.
It’s not saying much, but Hawai’i Theatre is the most beautiful theatre on Oahu. Unfortunately, it’s in a neighborhood that isn’t the best place to walk at night. Usually, you want to park at Mark’s Garage if you’re going to see a show there. The theatre itself is well-kept and in good condition since it was recently renovated. It’s full of history and is a local treasure.
I like this theater. Beautiful inside and out...a piece of old Hawaii. Run by the sacrifice of many volunteers which I appreciate. Mahalo!
Saw Allegiance last night... so professional! I loved it!
I wish Hawaii residents would patronize the arts more often. I try to expose new friends each time I do and it's always a pleasant surprise for them!
Beautifully restored historic theater! We were able to catch the annual spring concert and it was quite nice. Special guests Streetlight Cadence made it a special night also.
Beautiful venue! Great sound, clean, easy parking, helpful and friendly staff.
Had a blast! The performance was wonderful
The theater gets five stars. The production gets four. It was well and enthusiastically done, but the material the cast had to work with was not quite top drawer: weak story line, no tunes worth whistling on the way home. Indeed, I can't remember any of them.
The queen of Chinatown. This place is a wonder to behold and the sound quality is unparrelled. I find any excuse that allows me see something at the Hawaii theater. The theater should encourage food trucks to park out front and dispense cuisine sharing the theme of the show or event inside.
Nicely restored and not a bad seat in the house. Intimate setting given the size of the theatre.
Sound quality was great! Colbie Caillat & opening act, Justin Kawika Young, were amazing. Plus, Justin is a local boy who's engaged to Colbie!
Classic Artifact still here from years ago.
I came here to watch the Gay Men's Chorus. The show was wonderful! The theater is nice and clean. They are very organized. The only thing is parking around there is pretty expensive.
Excellent!!!! Just saw Jefferson Starship concert there this evening. Beautifully restored theater. Great view of the stage wherever you sit.
Pretty, classic theatre, a delightfully surprising find in Chinatown. Plan on attending more performances here.
The place is beautiful, however the seats are small and somewhat uncomfortable. The people working behind the scenes appeared tl be having a lot of technical difficulties. Prices at the snack bar are outrageous.
Amazing space for shows and concert love the old architecture of the 30 and 40 of the building , the sound really resonates in all the seats . Great job on the renovations
What can You say about Hawaii theater it's beautiful it has so much history and so many people have taken great care of our historical building..The Ferns concert with all the Ms Aloha Hula was so great being held as there ..was a night to remember always it was history in the making..
I love it at Hawaii Theater. I was an usher for a year or so and those mint vest bring back so many memories. I love just absorbing it all and the real theater feel. It will always call back to HTY performances, high school drama productions (sooo lucky), Newton Koshi, and a classic Cazimero Christmas. This is the epitome of what an old timey theater should be. And don't forget to look for the jesters.
Saw the show Allegiance. It was great! Related to the seats, they definitely need an upgrade. thought i saw stains and skid marks on the seats.
A cultural icon in Honolulu. Lovingly restored in the 90s with a wonderful neon sign and scrolling coming attractions. The movie palace, in a regal old style. it's always an experience going to the Hawaii theatre
The Hawaii theatre is a historic place. I remember going there as a kid to watch kung fu movies. It's even more beautiful after the restoration. I hope they keep this place going for many years to come.
Beautiful venue that hosts a wide variety of performances, both professional and amateur. Easily accessible with a good number of food establishments in the neighborhood.
Beautiful nostalgic theater.
Charming jewel box theater in Honolulu's core, between financial district and Chinatown, and a wonderful venue for events. Close to many downtown dining and parking options, and the nexus of Honolulu's bus system. One tip for intermission: upstairs makai men's bathroom is under utilized.
It's a fantastic theater. Beautiful in every way. Location, parking, area dining venues, staff and events calendar - it couldn't be better!
Great performance of PAPA's production of Disney's "Little Mermaid". Hawaii Theater is such a beautiful venue! Great talented cast, enjoyed it completely!
Delightful historic theatre space! Shows are contracted in as there is no in-house company. Only drawback are concession prices, which are really over the top.
Quaint little venue in the heart of chinatown. Low key, great accoustics, relaxed security. Rang in the new year with Phil Lesh, and it was a blast. Easy parking around the venue with numerous establishments in the neighborhood to pre-game. Intimate and unblemished by major corporate sponsorship which pin their corporate logo, increase capacity and decrease the experience. Ensure you check their list of events if you are planning on being in town.
Mahalo and Namaste
Beautiful, well-maintained venue with a ton of history. Go see a show!
Beautifully maintained facility! Interesting art on the walls. Easy access from The Bus.
The money they spent remodeling this place was worth every penny the seats were comfortable The View was great and the decal in the theater made us feel like it was worth the price of the ticket
They're trying to restore the theatre but I think it looks great. The booth has friendly sales staff, the inside has a great hall with great viewing from both sides, and the location is perfect.
Beautiful and have storic. Always great attending an event there.
So thankful the historical Hawai'i Theater in historical Chinatown was refurbished to its grandeaur!! Mahalo nui loa to all those involved in making it happen!! Don't miss the wonderful events scheduled there! Also mahalo to all the volunteers!
Very nice historic theater
Lovely old fashioned theatre ,friendly staff , we went to see Jim Brickman in concert .Parking nearby is $ 3 flat rate for the evening .Well recommended cheers Shaun & Gloria.
What a beautiful theatre. I always enjoy my visit. If you are looking for something different to do, look into this theatres program. There is always something to see here.
Beautiful iconic theatre.
Hawaii Symphony Orchestra was amazing. I enjoyed listening to live music again.
Support local arts in this historic theatre! Gorgeous, well preserved architecture. Not a bad seat in the house.
Truly a magical & historical entertainment venue. Love viewing so many different entertainers & plays. Dial M for murder, Moore & Sajak awesome!
We went and enjoyed listening to Kuana Torres and Na Palapalai and enjoyed seeing all the Miss Aloha Hula from 1971 to 2018. It was just so beautiful that I felt like standing up and hula with them! Paepaelima! Mahalo Kuana and Na Palapalai!
Grat historic venue, Beautiful restoration, too high ticket fees, even when going to ticket office. Drinks are pricey too.
Nice little venue can't wait till they can open back up this plandemic the Democrats released on us with their Chinese CCP cohorts
Wonderfully restored piece of Hawai'i history! If you are lucky enough to attend an event here you will fall in love with the building's charm too.
This is a classic theater that's been fully restored. It's one of the classiest entertainment venues on Oahu.
Great old classic theatre with a lot of history. Smaller theatre but still beautiful on the inside.
Awesome show! Ms. Cynthia Erivo showed why she's a truly talented STAR!
The Theater Was BEAUTIFUL, WITH A BEAUTIFUL CONCERT BY THE MILITARY ARMED FORCES, IM GOING AGAIN NEXT YEAR. I WILL FOR OTHER CONCERTS ALSO. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS EVERYONE!!!
Good place to see Whatevers but we were too close to stage - was live performance so when they were on the floor hard to see 😆😆😆 …
Beautiful historic theatre!
Nice theatre with classic structure.
Got to see Ryan Hamilton and it was the best! Check out his Netflix special, Happy Face!

Very quaint and classy feel. Love that it still has the old time theater feel.

Beautiful place to see any show!
Quite the classic theatre
Nice to see it restored
Established in 1934, this theater represents Hawaii. Designated on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, the theater is still active and hosts a variety of events. The parking lot environment is the worst in the downtown location, but I am very grateful to be able to watch a show at such a wonderful theater in Hawaii.
It may be difficult to stop by during your travels, but it is a place where the antique atmosphere of a theater that is over 100 years old and the free feeling unique to Hawaii are harmonized. It is friendly to see locals of all ages recognize and greet each other.
It seems that the neon outside lights up at the time of the event. The scenery is very beautiful and nostalgic. But downtown at night, the surrounding people disappear at once. Even the locals say women don't walk alone after the sun goes down.
If you come to Chinatown, just take a picture!
The lights are turned on at night, but it's better than before, but it's still not safe, so it's better to avoid it.
Excellent
Awesome Kalani Pe'a concert, 5/3/2019
I could feel the good old days.
Even in Hawaii, downtown is not a safe place.
I wouldn't recommend going at night.
Please be fluent in English.
There are many businessmen during the daytime on weekdays👍
It's on a street with an old city feel, so it's good to take a photo with the atmosphere
Many couples are taking pictures.
It's an interesting theater.
😍😍😍 …
It's an old place, but it looks like something out of a movie.
71st Narcissus Queen Pageant
The signboard of HAWAI is good❗
good old atmosphere
Great interior!
