Reviews of Master Arts Theatre
It's about the performance. You've never been so close to the action. A small theatre that is not short on talent. The powerful performances that you are immersed in earn this place two of those stars. They aren't earned for grandiose architecture, immaculate sets, or high tech stage effects, they are earned for the consistently high standards of performance. When you walk into what seems like an impossibly small building, just know that what you are about to see can't be faithfully replicated in a larger area. You are going to be hearing the actors voices, from their mouths, not from some speakers. This gives incredible authenticity. There is never a line missed because a mic wasn't at the right level, if someone is on the other side of the room you hear their voice from the other side of the room, if their back is turned to you, you hear that, this just can't be replicated in a large theatre. I would love to see Master Arts be housed in a great performance hall, but the truth is that it would change the secret sauce that makes it Master Arts.
Smaller community black box. Excellent management & community to work with. Shows & season passes are very reasonably priced for the consist high quality productions they put on. Most shows are completely family friendly, and they do an excellent job of making parents aware of which shows might not be appropriate for younger children.
One of the best plays I've ever seen. Great acting! Thank you for making my birthday special.
Wonderful Christian based theatre. The performances they put together are so high quality and professional. You can feel perfectly comfortable bringing the whole family and even invite your pastors along. The acting is stellar and engaging. All together an outstanding way to spend an evening.
We seen "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" EXCELLENT performances!! We highly recommend Master Arts Theatre for anyone that enjoys live drama performances! Amazing show!
There’s a scene in Indiana Jones - the Last Crusade where Indiana passes up all the golden chalices and picks up a simple, sturdy cup. “This is the cup of a carpenter,” he says. Master Arts is the Holy Grail of theaters, built by the same carpenter’s hands with as much heart and dedication as any larger, shinier theater.
Their facilities are simple, yet sufficient, and the productions are magnificent. Moreover, the storylines are suitable for grade school children and grandparents alike.
Enjoy the season!
A great Christian theatre, love the intimacy of the space and the community it fosters!
Enjoyed the play so much. Actors and actresses did a great job. Have always enjoyed the plays I've seen there.
Do not let appearances fool you. This little, black box theatre in an old church puts on some extraordinary performances. It's an intimate theatre experience you can't find anyplace else. The theatre itself seats about 100 people. No seat is a bad seat and you will be front and center for any of the stellar shows they put on. They have a helpful, friendly staff there to help you with any questions you might have. Not only do they have main stage productions (of which you may audition if you feel so inclined), but they also offer a variety of classes for the budding, young actor or actress. If you want a fun, unique night out this is the place to go.
Community theater tucked into a little wooded lot at the edge of town.
My first experience with Master Arts Theater was excellent! Seating was cozy, but the show and actors were EXCELLENT! There's a real sense of community here.
Had a fun time watching my granddaughters perform with others at their play@
Master Arts Theater presents several plays each year.y visit was occasioned by the production of theusical Anne of Green gables. It was outstanding. I particularly enjoyed the many children who had significant roles to play. The director coached all the performers to be their best. While this is an amateur theater company, MATS is a great addition to the Grand rapids art scene.
Watching a show at Master Arts is a warm, entertaining experience. The actors and directors are great people and they are very dedicated. The shows are very affordable, especially if you compare them to other theaters.
Most of the actors have been acting for many years. Don't be put off by the size of the building, they do a great job.
We have been to Master Arts many times. It's a quaint, intimate theatre where you are almost right in the middle of everything and can practically feel the actors breathing. The small black box style theatre is very versitile so you get a completely different experience with each show. Most shows are very family friendly. Good quality acting, directing and staging. The staff and volunteers are very friendly. We always look forward to going to Master Arts Theartre. :-)
The play, Quilters, was done so well. We enjoyed it.
The actors are amazing, most of the these people have been doing this for years and they make you feel like a part of a family! it may be a small theater, but that just means you see the whole performance no matter where you're seated and the ticket prices are great.
Saw "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" with my 5 year old granddaughter. It was an excellent introduction for her to musical theatre! Love the intimacy of the theatre and the professionalism and the enthusiasm of the performers.
Master Arts is a one of a kind experience... so much charm, so much christian heritage and a commitment to the arts unlike many in the West Michigan area. My family have enjoyed performances of Sound of Music, Prince and the Pauper, The Emperors New Clothes, and Welcome to Mitford in the last year+. The facility looks nothing like a stage, but it is amazing to watch MAT bring it to life every time!
Master Arts Theater is the most awesome Theater in the GR area. It is very family friendy and for being such a small theater the talent there is amazing. Their shows are of the highest quality . I cannot say enough good about them,
Enjoyed very much. Music was great.
Attending Master Arts Theater is always a great experience. For over 25 years MAT has presented the greater Grand Raipids community with quality productions that are often fun, sometimes thought provoking and frequently illuminating. There is an obvious commitment to excellence in the staff, crew and actors. The intimate setting enables the viewers to almost become part of the story unfolding before them. Tickets are very reasonably priced compared to other area theaters, and the entertainment is evefry bit as good if not better than most. If you have never attended a MAT play I highly encourage you to do so. Once you've seen one I have no doubt you will want to see more.
It was wonderful! We saw Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. The Cast was wonderful!
Saw "The Importance of Being Ernest" and was very impressed with the performance. They are especially inventive with getting the most out of an intimate space. With everyone so close to the action, there are no bad seats.
A great theatre to work with. I loved my experience with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The costuming was great and so was the cast.
Fun, inexpensive live theater! Inexpensive date night, what a gem more people should take advantage of.
Wonderful shows! Very professional. However, if you're an actor, don't expect to get your foot in the door. They pick the same people over and over.
I so enjoyed the production of "Christmas at Pemberly" last evening. It is amazing the professional production in their small place. The future re-do of their facility will be so exciting!!!
This was my first time attending a production at Master Arts Theatre, and for being such a limited production area they did great I saw the production Narnia and it was done very well
I'm often impressed! Good shows in an intimate space. As the layout changes from show to show, legroom can sometimes be an issue.
A really good adaptation and performance of When Calls The Heart. We talked to the playwright and it was written in the 1990s.
Great actors. Small and up close theater. Close to 131. Reasonable.
The humble actors really work hard. They put on a great show for how small the building is.
The play Anne of Green Gables was so well done. I thought play prices were high for the facility.
Handicap accessible, decent prices and enty of parking
Enjoyed outdoor theatre play of Enchanted in April.
Sincere performance in a good venue.
Funniest play I've seen in a very long time. Great acting!!
